If preferences on immigration policy respond to facts, widespread misinformation poses an obstacle to consensus. Does factual information about immigration indeed affect policy preferences? Are beliefs about immigration’s societal impact the mechanism through which factual information affects support for increased immigration? To address these questions, we conducted an original survey experiment, in which we presented a nationally representative sample of 2,049 Americans living in the United States with facts about immigrants’ English acquisition and immigrants’ impact on crime, jobs, and taxes—four domains with common misperceptions. Three of these factual domains (immigration’s impact on crime, jobs, and taxes) raise overall support for increased immigration. These facts also affect beliefs that are directly relevant to that information. Moreover, those beliefs mediate the effect of factual information on support for increased immigration. By contrast, information about English acquisition affects neither policy preferences nor beliefs about immigration’s impact. Facts can leverage social cognitions to change policy preferences.

Abstract Immigration attitudes have long been critical in predicting electoral behavior in Western Europe. Whether such attitudes will continue to motivate political behavior in the current pandemic environment is yet to be seen. This article addresses this topic by exploring immigration's prevalence and impact on Germany's 2021 Bundestag election. Combining evidence across multiple German election surveys, I find that immigration remains consequential in shaping political behavior throughout the country. In spite of immigration's reduced political salience, voters continued to view immigration as one of the most important political problems facing Germany. Moreover, immigration-minded voters were significantly more likely to support the Alternative for Germany on the far right and punish the Greens on the left. The article concludes that reducing immigration's salience will not necessarily change its influence over modern German elections.

Over the last decade, issues related to immigration have become increasingly salient across Western democracies. This increasing salience has made it more important to understand people’s attitudes toward immigration, including the effects of media use on those attitudes. Differentiating between attitudes toward different types of immigration, attitudes toward immigration from different parts of the world, and perceptions of immigration’s impact, this article investigates the effects of media use on attitudes toward and perceptions of immigration in Sweden. Based on a three-year, three-wave panel study, it investigates the effects of media use on the individual level. Among other things, results show that there are limited effects of using traditional news media but more substantial effects on people’s immigration attitudes of using anti-immigration, right-wing alternative media and pro-immigration, left-wing alternative media. These findings imply that it is highly relevant to account for media use, especially alternative media use, when studying public attitudes toward immigration. Further, we find that variations in people’s immigration attitudes, to a high degree, depend on the type of immigration and on where migrants are coming from. This finding underlines the importance of measuring both of these aspects when the aim is understanding general attitudes toward immigration and/or key predictors behind immigration attitudes.

In this paper we consider subcritical and supercritical discrete time branching processes with generation dependent immigration. We prove central limit theorems for fluctuation of branching processes with immigration when the mean of immigrating individuals tends to infinity with the generation number and immigration process is m−dependent. The first result states on weak convergence of the fluctuation subcritical branching processes with m−dependent immigration to standard normal distribution. In this case, we do not assume that the mean and variance of immigration process are regularly varying at infinity. In contrast, in Theorem 3.2, we suppose that the mean and variance are to be regularly varying at infinity. The proofs are based on direct analytic method of probability theory.

AbstractThis paper describes the immigration that took place in the Dutch East Indies under the Dutch colonial rule. The immigration policy had applied in the Dutch East Indies which was called Open deur politiek or open door politics. Open Door Politics namely the policy that opened the Dutch East Indies as wide as possible for foreigners to enter permanently and become resident of the Netherlands Indies. The history of immigration in Indonesia began in 1913, since the Dutch East Indies government began implementing a colonial immigration law system. At that time there was a colonial government body called Immigratie Dienst which was in charge of handling immigration issues for the entire Dutch East Indies region. Keywords: Immigration; Open deur politiek; Dutch-IndiesAbstrakTulisan ini menjelaskan tentang imigrasi yang berlangsung di Hindia Belanda dibawah jajahan pemerintahan Belanda. Politik kebijakan keimigrasian yang diterapkan di Hindia-Belanda disebut opendeurpolitiek atau politik pintu terbuka yaitu kebijakan yang membuka wilayah Hindia-Belanda untuk seluas-luasnya bagi orang asing dapat masuk menetap dan menjadi penduduk Hindia-Belanda. Sejarah keimigrasian di Indonesia dimulai sejak tahun 1913, sejak pemerintah Hinda-Belanda mulai menjalankan ssstem hukum keimigrasian yang bersifat kolonial. Pada saat itu terdapat badan pemerintahan kolonial bernama Immigratie Dienst yang bertugas menangani masalah keimigrasian untuk seluruh kawasan Hindia-Belanda.

The Directorate General of Immigration issued a decree regarding the Social Media Management Guidelines for the Directorate General of Immigration, Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia Number: IMI-0002-HH.01.01 of 2022 which contains guidelines for standardizing immigration public information that can be published by all immigration office in Indonesia. This research focuses on the use of social media used by the Bandung Immigration Office to disseminate immigration information, namely Instagram and YouTube. The purpose of this study was to find out the implementation of the directorate general of immigration's social media in disseminating information through social media and recommendations for optimizing Instagram and YouTube social media. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. The results of this study found that the Bandung immigration office's Instagram and YouTube social media were considered not optimal in implementing the guidelines, there were still deficiencies such as account names that did not comply with the guidelines, color templates used in content, fonts that still adjusted to the uploaded content.

Résumé Aujourd’hui plus qu’hier, présenter des chiffres clairs sur l’immigration constitue une nécessité, mais également un défi. Cet article tente de démêler quelques chiffres-clés pour apporter un éclairage sur les flux récents d’immigration et d’asile en Belgique. Ces dernières années, le nombre d’entrées d’étrangers a atteint un niveau historiquement élevé. En 2017, près de 140 000 immigrations internationales ont été enregistrées. Les citoyens de l’UE représentent plus de la moitié de ces immigrations. Derrière une tendance migratoire globalement en hausse depuis la fin des années 1990, des logiques migratoires assez contrastées peuvent être dégagées. Depuis 2014 par exemple, les Français se font devancer par les Roumains dans les immigrations étrangères vers la Belgique, depuis lors en tête de classement. Depuis plus de cinquante ans l’immigration marocaine figure parmi les principaux flux d’immigration, mais cette migration ancienne est freinée récemment par un regroupement familial rendu plus difficile. Les immigrations de Syriens enregistrées en Belgique ont par contre fortement augmenté, plaçant la Syrie dans le top cinq des pays d’origine des immigrants en 2016 et 2017. Abstract Today more than yesterday, presenting clear immigration Figures is a necessity, but also a challenge. This article aims to unravel some key Figures to shed light on recent immigration and asylum flows in Belgium. In recent years, the number of entries of foreigners in Belgium has reached a historically high level. In 2017, nearly 140,000 international immigrants were registered. EU citizens accounted for more than half of these immigrants. Behind a migration trend that has been on the rise since the end of the 1990s, contrasting migratory patterns can be identified. Since 2014, for example, the French have been more numerous than Romanians among foreign immigrants to Belgium and have been at the top of the list ever since. For more than fifty years Moroccan immigration has been one of the main immigration flows, but this long‐standing migration has recently been slowed down by family reunification, which has become more difficult. Registered Syrian immigration to Belgium has risen sharply, placing Syria in the top five countries of origin of immigrants in 2016 and 2017.

The article describes metaphorical models which represent the concept of immigration in the discourse of ex US president Barack Obama and today’s American president Donald Trump. The conducted comparative analyses of remarks by two presidents in address to the nation on immigration distinguished certain metaphorical models which actualize different priority tendencies of immigrational politics of the presidents, and which serve for forming needed images and defining people’s way of thinking and behavior. The analysis showed how linguacultural images of American world view have changed during the last three years. The paper points out dominant metaphorical models characterizing immigration from different points of view. For Barack Obama immigration is a source of entrepreneurial and economic potential. Donald Trump’s metaphors present immigrants as aliens threatening the safety of the nation.

Immigration poses individual or collective economic risks that might increase citizen support for government redistribution, but it can also generate fiscal pressure or undermine social solidarity to diminish such support. These offsetting conditions obscure the net effects of immigration for welfare states. This article explores whether immigration's effects are mediated by the economic and social integration of immigrants. Integration can be conceptualized and measured as involving the degree to which immigrants suffer unemployment rates, depend on welfare-state benefits, and harbor social attitudes similarly to the native population. Such integration may alter how immigration reduces solidarity and imposes fiscal and macroeconomic pressures, but does not much alter how immigration spurs economic risks for natives. Where migrants are more integrated by such measures, immigration should have less negative or more positive implications for native support for government redistribution and welfare states than where migrants are less integrated. The article explores these arguments using survey data for twenty-two European countries between 2002 and 2010. The principal finding is that economic integration, more than sociocultural integration, softens the tendency of immigration to undermine support for redistributive policies.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Immigration Statistic, California accounts for approximately 2,600,000 illegal immigrants in 2009. This number represents about 25 percent of the entire estimated illegal immigrant population in the United States, which is roughly 10.8 million. Between 2003 and 2008, the U.S. government removed 1,446,338 noncitizens from the United States. This rise in deportation is a result o the changes that have been enacted by the federal government over the years that transformed the nature of immigration enforcement. This thesis explores the California Immigration Enforcement system from the programs established to apprehend illegal aliens in the United States, the rights illegal aliens are granted, the detention facilities where they reside and the immigration courts that ultimately decide their fate. The question that is being asked is whether the current system established works or if reform is needed.

”Problemet” immigration i ”möjligheternas” EU är en uppsats som ämnar analysera EU:s immigrations- och asylpolitik. Materialet består av olika policydokument, utgivna av EU-kommissionen. Det är en diskursanalys med syfte att söka urskilja bakomliggande mönster för den politik som formuleras i texterna. Diskursanalysen vilken är en breddad typ av textanalys utgör uppsatsens metod. Utöver det diskursanalytiska perspektivet så tolkas materialet utifrån två teoretiska perspektiv. Dessa två består av ett universalistiskt respektive ett postkolonialistiskt. Det universalistiska perspektivet används för att ta reda på hur EU tar hänsyn till mänskliga rättigheter i sina immigrations- och asylpolicies. Den postkolonialistiska teorin brukas i syfte att pröva om politiken kan sägas ge uttryck för en så kallad colonialism of compassion. Resultatet visar att en sådan ”ny” typ av kolonialism är applicerbar på EU:s immigrations- och asylpolicies. Respekt för mänskliga rättigheter är ett återkommande tema i de analyserade dokumenten men slutsatsen blir dock att de politiska idéerna bygger mer på ett partikularistiskt synsätt än ett universalistiskt. En övrig viktig slutsats är att politiken verkar styras av en syn på immigration som ett problem som för med sig mer ont än gott. Benämningen ”olaglig invandring” visar hur EU avser förstärka problemdimensionen av immigration vilket gör att politiken formas därefter.
This thesis aims to investigate the EU immigration and asylum policies by reviewing official policy documents. The method used is a discourse analysis which seeks to uncover different underlying patterns or discourses that might effect the policies. Apart from the discourse analytic perspective there are two theoretical views applicated. These two perspectives are a universalistic and a postcolonialistic. The universalistic perspective is used in order to examine how the EU treats human rights in their immigration and asylum policies. The postcolonialistic perspective is used with the purpose to see if there might be an expression for a kind of colonialism of compassion. According to the result this “new” kind of colonialism can be said to make part of the policies. As for the universalistic perspective it is shown that there is an explicit ambition to respect human rights but the political ideas seem to be more particularistic then universalistic. Another conclusion is that the EU seems to view immigration through a very negative perspective which this thesis claims has an effect on how the policies are written. When the EU insist to speak about “illegal immigration” instead of just “irregular immigration” this shows how they aim to strenghten the dimension of immigration and asylum as a problem.

The purpose of this study was to explore whether non-profit immigration organizations are ready for a comprehensive immigration reform. Social workers need to recognize that a lack of readiness among non-profit immigration organizations for a comprehensive immigration reform will lead to a lack of required services for undocumented populations. The sample consisted of twelve religious and non-religiously affiliated non-profit immigration organizations. A qualitative research method was used to analyze the data. The results of the study concluded that non-profit immigration organizations are not ready for a CIR. Although the organizations are not ready, several factors were found to affect their readiness for a comprehensive immigration reform. Factors that negatively contributed to their readiness included learned experiences with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), directors’ perceptions, and funding. Recommendations for better service delivery to undocumented populations include the recommendation that organizations reviewing their plans by addressing these factors.

Immigration is a contentious issue for the governments of developed countries like the UK. Despite limited evidence demonstrating any substantial detrimental impact of immigration, it is often opposed. This thesis contains three empirical works that investigate a) how immigrants view immigration and how theses views compare to natives b) the role of the labour market in establishing views towards further immigration and c) the impact of immigrants on primary schools in England. Data come from the UK Citizenship Survey; the censuses, providing longitudinal data on immigration in local areas, and the Department for Education, providing panel data for primary schools. A variety of econometric techniques are employed for the data analysis: OLS, Probit, Ordered Probit, fuzzy Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD), fixed effect regressions, and Instrumental Variable (IV) are all implemented. Results suggest that earlier immigrants are similar to natives in being opposed to further immigration, while recent immigrants are more in favour of further immigration. Financial and economic shocks are associated with stronger anti-immigration responses. However, labour market concerns do not play a large role for either group of the respondents. The role of labour market is investigated more rigorously by studying the change in views of native males on exit from the labour market. After controlling for the potential selection and endogeneity biases using a fuzzy RDD, views of native males, essentially, remain unchanged with some evidence of reduced opposition after exit from the labour market. Finally, this thesis investigates the impact of immigrants on educational outcomes and schools. Using past location choice of immigrants to account for the non-random selection of immigrants into areas, results suggest that increased immigration has improved educational outcomes, both in English and maths, but also placed resource pressures on primary schools, as class sizes have increased and schools had to hire additional teachers.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research study discusses the extent to which transnational organised crime (TOC) has had an impact on Norwegian immigration policy. There has been a public debate in Norway about the involvement of asylum seekers in various forms of organised crime, leading immigration authorities to lament their insufficient resources and means to tackle the problem. Simultaneously, restrictive amendments have been made to the Norwegian Immigration Act, suggesting that immigration law is applied against TOC. The aim of the study is to understand why there has been a change in Norwegian immigration policy, and to discuss the effects and implications of the change. The study is a single-case study using qualitative methods, as the study seeks to provide a detailed description of Norwegian immigration policy and the context in which the changes in the immigration policy have been made. The case of Norway has been chosen because of the increasing focus that TOC has been receiving from Norwegian immigration authorities, accompanied by broad media coverage and restrictive amendments to the Immigration Act. The theories that are applied – criminologies of the self and the other, crimmigration, and securitisation theory – are all chosen because they address different aspects of “us” and “them” thinking. The study argues that the increased focus on transnational organised crime in Norwegian crime statistics reflects the narrative of the criminal other, found in criminologies of the self and the other. Within this narrative the criminal others are distinctly different from ordinary citizens of society and must be excluded for our own security and protection. This contributes to reinforcement of a discourse in which asylum seekers and illegal immigrants become difficult to distinguish from suspicious others and criminals. Accordingly, there is support for the claim that Norwegian immigration policy has been subject to a process of crimmigration. Further, it is found that Norwegian immigration policy has been securitised. It is concluded that although there might be a connection between transnational organised crime and a shift in immigration policy, the change in immigration policy is rather a result of the larger issue of immigration in general. The theoretical framework shows how immigration becomes framed within a security and criminal context, leading to a narrative where the other becomes a potential threat to members of society. This is problematic in a world where inequality is on the rise, and international conventions on human rights are at odds with punitive populism.

Die doel van hierdie studie was om te verstaan waarom ʼn verandering in Noorweë se immigrasiebeleid aangebring is en om die gevolge en implikasies van hierdie verandering te ondersoek. ʼn Enkele gevallestudie is in hierdie studie onderneem en daar is gebruik gemaak van kwalitatiewe metodes om die navorser in staat te stel om ʼn gedetailleerde beskrywing te gee van Noorweë se immigrasiebeleid en die konteks waarbinne die veranderinge in hierdie beleid aangebring is. Noorweë is as gevallestudie gekies as gevolg van die toenemende fokus wat deur Noorweegse immigrasieowerhede op transnasionale georganiseerde misdaad geplaas word, vergesel van omvattende mediadekking, en die beperkende wysigings wat in die immigrasiewet aangebring is. Die teorieë wat in hierdie studie aangewend is – kriminologie oor die “self” en die “ander”, “krimigrasie” (crimmigration) en sekerheidsteorie – is gekies op grond daarvan dat hulle verskillende aspekte van denke oor “ons” (die “self”) en “hulle” (die “ander”) aanspreek. In hierdie studie word daar geargumenteer dat die toenemende fokus op transnasionale georganiseerde misdaad in Noorweegse misdaadstatistiek die narratief van die kriminele “ander” reflekteer, waarna daar in die kriminologie oor die “self” en die “ander” verwys word. In hierdie narratief word ʼn duidelike onderskeid tussen die kriminele “ander” en die “gewone” burgers getref en die kriminele moet ter wille van hierdie burgers se veiligheid en beskerming uitgesluit word van die samelewing. Dit dra by tot die versterking van ʼn diskoers waarin dit moeilik word om asielsoekers en onwettige immigrante van verdagtes en kriminele te onderskei. Dienooreenkomstig daarmee is daar steun vir die bewering dat Noorweë se immigrasiebeleid onderworpe is aan ʼn krimigrasieproses. Verder is daar bevind dat Noorweë se immigrasiebeleid aangepas is deur dit binne ʼn sekerheidsraamwerk te plaas. Daar is tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat alhoewel daar ʼn verband tussen transnasionale georganiseerde misdaad en ʼn verskuiwing in immigrasiebeleid mag wees, die verandering in immigrasiebeleid eerder ʼn gevolg is van die groter kwessie rondom immigrasie in die algemeen. Die teoretiese raamwerk dui aan hoe immigrasie geskets word in ʼn sekuriteits- en kriminele konteks, wat lei tot ʼn narratief waar die “ander” ʼn potensiële bedreiging vir lede van die samelewing word. Dit is problematies in ʼn wêreld waar ongelykheid toeneem en internasionale konvensies oor menseregte strydig is met strafbare populisme.

Resumen
Singapore is a country built entirely by migrants. The topic of migration thus forms a very important part of the history of Singapore, in which much research has been done. However, one aspect of the modern migration history of Singapore has not been wellstudied, and that is illegal immigration. Since centuries ago, people have been smuggled on the very waterways that modern Singapore owes its prosperity to. Today, people are still entering and exiting the country clandestinely using the same waterways. However, as technology develops, the methods by which these people use to enter Singapore clandestinely are constantly changing. Regardless of the change in methods, such clandestine migration often involves great danger and hardship for those who dare to embark on the journey, just as the way it was in the past. This is even more so as Singapore turns from a colony to an independent country, and as the independent government increasingly exercises more control on the type of immigrants it allows into its borders to help take the country to greater heights in terms of prosperity. Immigration policies and laws thus become fine-tuned and people who are deemed ??undesirable?? are filtered out. The strict laws did not, however, deter some people from entering the country in search of a good job and a better life. As Singapore gears itself to receive more legal migrants, it must also be prepared to take measures against illegal immigrants. Illegal immigration is therefore a continuous battle between the authorities and the illegal migrants. Through the use of official and unofficial documents and public resources, some of which are not easily obtainable, this thesis traces the development of illegal immigration from a historical context and explores the life of the illegal migrants in Singapore so as to fill in the gaps on an under-studied topic, as well as the change in mindsets migrants-turned-citizens have towards new migrants, in an attempt to use a historical approach to explain the issue of the social phenomenon of illegal migration to Singapore.

Resumen
Many Central Asian countries declaring their independence after the splitting of the Soviet Union, cannot meet the economical and social needs of their citizens by falling much behind of the era in terms of industry despite the natural wealth they have. In addition to all these, the problems in the ruling class and the chaos environment have resulted in the immigration of many people to alternative living spaces. These immigrations have affected labor market both positively and negatively besides the social life. The labor demand increased by the entrance of the immigrants into the market has affected the employee wages and also this situation has affected the life standards of the citizens. In this study, the immigration that took place in the countries established after the splitting of the Soviet Union, forming one of the two poles of the world before the cold war, and the effects of this immigration on the labor market have been analyzed considering previous studies on the subject. The studies carried out on this subject have yielded various results according to the area in which it’s carried out, the time interval it includes, and the period’s structure. For this reason, the points of views on the subject are compared by making a long literature review.

Resumen
The host majority has an important impact on how immigrants adapt to their new land. The focus of the present chapter1 is to understand attitudes of Portuguese young people towards immigration. To achieve this aim, a pilot study was conducted with the ISATIS (International Study of Attitudes Towards Immigration and Settlement) instrument. The sample consisted of 477 Portuguese youngsters attending courses in high school, interviewed in 1999 and in 2006. All participants were of Portuguese origin and 94% were born in Portugal. Their age ranged between 16 and 20 years. An examination of acculturation expectations towards immigration showed that Integration is the option most preferred, while Exclusion is the least preferred. In-between preferences are Segregation and Assimilation. Globally, there was a positive social climate towards immigration and immigrants. However, from 1999 to 2006 those positive attitudes were less strong. Girls revealed more positive attitudes towards immigration and immigrants than boys. Regarding attitudes towards diversity, tolerance is clearly the strongest link. With respect to security, economic security and personal security are the weakest links. The indicators of immigration climate (perceived personal, economic and cultural consequences of diversity and immigration, the tendency to advocate prohibition of immigration and attitude toward 17 ethnocultural groups) are reasonably strong. Immigration climate is more strongly linked to diversity attitudes as compared with security.

Resumen
A succession of policy changes to the immigration and refugee system has been made in Canada in recent years by the Conservative federal government. Since most people’s understandings about immigration issues come from exposure to the news, the media have an important role in producing and reproducing prevalent public opinions to support and legitimize, or criticize, social and political actions. The present study examines how the immigration and refugee policy changes have been represented in mainstream print media and provides an important interface between recent political decision-making and society with regard to immigration issues. In our analysis, we demonstrate that there is a construction of the existing system as facing crisis due to rampant frauds to legitimize the implementation of more restrictive “get-tough” policies as pragmatic and commonsensical interventions. On the other hand, there is a privileging of framing immigration as being necessary for society, albeit in economic rather than sociocultural terms. In the media, social categorizations of immigrants into “good” and “bad,” and refugee claimants into “genuine” and “bogus,” are deployed to support the policy changes for a market-driven immigration system while restricting the admission of refugees and family-class immigrants, who are often portrayed as a burden on public resources.
