Resumen

In todays heterogeneous network environment, there is a growing demand for distrusted parties to jointly execute distributed algorithms on private data whose secrecy needed to be safeguarded. Platforms that support such computation on image processing purposes are called secure image processing protocols. In this thesis, we propose a new security model, called quasi information theoretic (QIT) security. Under the proposed model efficient protocols on two basic image processing algorithms linear filtering and thresholding are developed. For both problems we consider two situations: 1) only two parties are involved where one holds the data and the other possesses the processing algorithm; 2) an additional non-colluding third party exists. Experiments show that our proposed protocols improved the computational time significantly compared with the classical cryptographical couterparts as well as providing reasonable amount of security as proved in the thesis

The proposal of the thesis is basically to study techniques in digital image processing. This thesis will cover two image processing areas, which are image restoration and image enhancement. More specifically, image restoration will involve the removal of noise and image enhancement will look into technique for edge enhancement. In this project, two classes of filter will be introduced, which are linear and nonlinear filters. Two type of noise source will be used which are Gaussian noise and salt and pepper noise. For noise removal, the mean filter is used as example of a linear filter and the median filter is used as an example of a nonlinear filter. For edge enhancement, only a linear filter is used, which is the unsharp mask filter. The simulation programs are written using the Image Processing Toolbox in MATLAB (MATrix LABoratory). Test images that corrupted by noise will be used in investigations to assess the strength and weakness for each type of filter.

Resumen

The main purpose of optimisation in image processing is to compensate for missing, corrupted image data, or to find good correspondences between input images. We note that image data essentially has infinite dimensionality that needs to be discretised at certain levels of resolution. Most image processing methods find a suboptimal solution, given the characteristics of the problem. While the general optimisation literature is vast, there does not seem to be an accepted universal method for all image problems. In this thesis, we consider three interrelated optimisation approaches to exploit problem structures of various relaxations to three common image processing problems: 1. The first approach to the image registration problem is based on the nonlinear programming model. Image registration is an ill-posed problem and suffers from many undesired local optima. In order to remove these unwanted solutions, certain regularisers or constraints are needed. In this thesis, prior knowledge of rigid structures of the images is included in the problem using linear and bilinear constraints. The aim is to match two images while maintaining the rigid structure of certain parts of the images. A sequential quadratic programming algorithm is used, employing dimensional reduction, to solve the resulting discretised constrained optimisation problem. We show that pre-processing of the constraints can reduce problem dimensionality. Experimental results demonstrate better performance of our proposed algorithm compare to the current methods. 2. The second approach is based on discrete Markov Random Fields (MRF). MRF has been successfully used in machine learning, artificial intelligence, image processing, including the image registration problem. In the discrete MRF model, the domain of the image problem is fixed (relaxed) to a certain range. Therefore, the optimal solution to the relaxed problem could be found in the predefined domain. The original discrete MRF is NP hard and relaxations are needed to obtain a suboptimal solution in polynomial time. One popular approach is the linear programming (LP) relaxation. However, the LP relaxation of MRF (LP-MRF) is excessively high dimensional and contains sophisticated constraints. Therefore, even one iteration of a standard LP solver (e.g. interior-point algorithm), may take too long to terminate. Dual decomposition technique has been used to formulate a convex-nondifferentiable dual LP-MRF that has geometrical advantages. This has led to the development of first order methods that take into account the MRF structure. The methods considered in this thesis for solving the dual LP-MRF are the projected subgradient and mirror descent using nonlinear weighted distance functions. An analysis of the convergence properties of the method is provided, along with improved convergence rate estimates. The experiments on synthetic data and an image segmentation problem show promising results. 3. The third approach employs a hierarchy of problem's models for computing the search directions. The first two approaches are specialised methods for image problems at a certain level of discretisation. As input images are infinite-dimensional, all computational methods require their discretisation at some levels. Clearly, high resolution images carry more information but they lead to very large scale and ill-posed optimisation problems. By contrast, although low level discretisation suffers from the loss of information, it benefits from low computational cost. In addition, a coarser representation of a fine image problem could be treated as a relaxation to the problem, i.e. the coarse problem is less ill-conditioned. Therefore, propagating a solution of a good coarse approximation to the fine problem could potentially improve the fine level. With the aim of utilising low level information within the high level process, we propose a multilevel optimisation method to solve the convex composite optimisation problem. This problem consists of the minimisation of the sum of a smooth convex function and a simple non-smooth convex function. The method iterates between fine and coarse levels of discretisation in the sense that the search direction is computed using information from either the gradient or a solution of the coarse model. We show that the proposed algorithm is a contraction on the optimal solution and demonstrate excellent performance on experiments with image restoration problems.

The field of modelling and processing of 'images' has fairly recently become important, even crucial, to areas of science, medicine, and engineering. The inevitable explosion of imaging modalities and approaches stemming from this fact has become a rich source of mathematical applications. <br /><br /> 'Imaging' is quite broad, and suffers somewhat from this broadness. The general question of 'what is an image?' or perhaps 'what is a natural image?' turns out to be difficult to address. To make real headway one may need to strongly constrain the class of images being considered, as will be done in part of this thesis. On the other hand there are general principles that can guide research in many areas. One such principle considered is the assertion that (classes of) images have multiscale relationships, whether at a pixel level, between features, or other variants. There are both practical (in terms of computational complexity) and more philosophical reasons (mimicking the human visual system, for example) that suggest looking at such methods. Looking at scaling relationships may also have the advantage of opening a problem up to many mathematical tools. <br /><br /> This thesis will detail two investigations into multiscale relationships, in quite different areas. One will involve Iterated Function Systems (IFS), and the other a stochastic approach to reconstruction of binary images (binary phase descriptions of porous media). The use of IFS in this context, which has often been called 'fractal image coding', has been primarily viewed as an image compression technique. We will re-visit this approach, proposing it as a more general tool. Some study of the implications of that idea will be presented, along with applications inferred by the results. In the area of reconstruction of binary porous media, a novel, multiscale, hierarchical annealing approach is proposed and investigated.

Este documento descreve o trabalho realizado na exploração do espaço de projeto de arquiteturas para processamento de imagem e de vídeo, utilizando processamento paralelo. Uma nova técnica é apresentada, na qual Processadores Elementares (P.E.s) especializados trabalham de forma cooperativa sobre uma estrutura de comunicação em rede intra-chip<br>Nowadays video and image processing is a very important research area, because of its widespread use in a broad class of applications like entertainment, surveillance, control, medicine and many others. Some of the used algorithms to perform recognition, compression, decompression, filtering, restoration and enhancement of the images, require a computational power higher than the one available in conventional processors, requiring the development of dedicated architectures. This document presents the work developed in the design space exploration in the field of video and image processing architectures by the use of parallel processing. Many characteristics of this kind of architecture are pointed out. A novel technique is presented in which customized Processing Elements work in a cooperative way over a communication structure using a network on chip.

The image processing methodologies that have been actively studied and developed now play a very significant role in the flourishing biotechnology research. This work studies, develops and implements several image processing techniques for M-FISH and cDNA microarray images. In particular, we focus on three important areas: M-FISH image compression, microarray image processing and expression-based classification. Two schemes, embedded M-FISH image coding (EMIC) and Microarray BASICA: Background Adjustment, Segmentation, Image Compression and Analysis, have been introduced for M-FISH image compression and microarray image processing, respectively. In the expression-based classification area, we investigate the relationship between optimal number of features and sample size, either analytically or through simulation, for various classifiers.

The nematode C. elegans is a widely used model organism. It has many cells with human equivalents, making it possible to study pathways conserved in humans and related conditions. Being small and transparent, it also lends itself well to a variety of high-throughput screening techniques. Worm identification should be as automated as possible since it is too labor-intense and time-consuming to do it manually. Here we present an image processing methodology to detect C. elegans in high-throughput microscope images. The provided semi-automatic solution makes it possible to effectively identify individual worms in worm clusters. In general terms, the process is as follows: A given image is segmented, thus separating groups of worms from the background. Individual worms are detected automatically, following a worm-shape matching process. For worm clusters, the matching process is based on finding feasible worm shapes by minimizing the distance between the cluster and generic worm shapes, which are deformed to fit it. Wrong and missing conformations can be quickly fixed manually. The provided methodology is a novel approach to successfully detect individual C. elegans worms in high-throughput microscope images. Results show that this semi-automatic solution makes it possible to fit the shape of 100% of worms in the image, unlike previous automated methods that reach, at most, less than 90% in average, for similar test sets. The detection process is usually achieved in less than halfa minute for difficult images. For easier images, the total match can often be calculated in a fully automatic way. Time cost and matching accuracy are considerably improved with respect to manual identification. The solution was implemented in Java and adjusted to Endrov, which is an open source plug-in architecture for image analysis, and is to be used at the Department of Bioscience and Nutrition, Karolinska Institute, Sweden.

It was desired to design an image processing system that resembled the human retina, for the processing of two-dimensional images. In particular the system was required to carry out basic image processing tasks such as edge detection. A new filtering technique was deduced from the physiological findings on the distribution of the receptive fields of the ganglion cells on the retina. This filtering technique was then incorporated in designing an image processing system in which the spatial resolution was increased linearly towards the geometrical center of the image. The design was based on a discrete distribution of processing areas on an inhomogeneous hexagonal sampling grid. This resulted in a highly localized processing system which simplified the development of algorithms for higher image processing tasks such as boundary following. The retinal image processing system was simulated on the VAX-11/750. Resumen

This thesis reports research on aspects of medical imaging and general image processing. As regards general image processing, techniques for estimating two-dimensional object motion (translation and rotation) from digital images are the main concern. Established techniques are reviewed, and new approaches are proposed. Several extensions are reported to the phase correlation (PC) technique introduced originally by Kuglin and Hines [1975] for estimating translation. The superior performance of PC as compared to that of conventional correlation, is shown to be related to the concept of phase dominance, a term quite recently introduced in this laboratory in the context of Fourier phase retrieval. Three modifications to PC are found to be necessary for it to be able to operate effectively on images exhibiting imperfections of the kind encountered in the real world. The ability of PC to estimate the translation of an object, when the latter also rotates, is examined and illustrated. A technique called sequential predictive phase correlation (SPPC) is introduced. It is particularly useful for estimating the translational motion of objects recorded in sequences of Images. Emphasis is placed on the importance of descriptors which permit object rotation to be estimated, at comparatively small computational expense, with the aid of angular correlation. Two descriptors, the bispectrum (equivalent to the triple autocorrelation) and the magnitude of the conventional spectrum, are examined in detail. The chief advantage of the bispectrum is that it is completely insensitive to translational motion of the object, even though it retains all of its phase information (thereby sharpening the peaks of angular correlations) in marked contrast to the spectral magnitude. The theoretical basis for motion estimation by bispectral analysis is presented. Numerical comparisons of rotation estimation by angular correlation employing the bispectrum and the conventional spectral magnitude, in situations where the level of noise and other contamination is appreciable, show that the performance of the former is significantly superior. The main concern on the medical imaging side is with two aspects of digital coronary angiography. One of them relates to compensating for limitations of x-ray/video imaging systems. Screen brightness persistence, or lag, of video cameras typically employed in angiographic systems causes images acquired by them to be effectively multiple exposures, so that images of moving objects become significantly blurred. A method of compensating for the lag by weighted subtraction of successive images is presented. This method can achieve resolutions comparable to those conventionally obtainable for images of static objects, but with an increase in the overall contamination level. Averaging with motion compensation, however, allows the original signal-to-noise ratio to be restored. A second aspect of medical imaging examined and extended in this thesis is estimating the motion of coronary arteries for: 1) enhancing images for improving clinical diagnosis, and 2) assessing physiological function, especially coronary circulation. The key to this is shown to be appropriate compensation for arterial motion. New algorithms, based on the SPPC and lag removal techniques, are introduced. They are applied to the processing of clinical coronary angiogram sequences. The results presented herein show that these algorithms can estimate coronary arterial motion to useful accuracies. It appears that these algorithms could be usefully applied to the evaluation of coronary arterial narrowing due to coronary disease.

Resumen

Video/Image processing is a fundamental issue in computer science. It is widely used for a broad range of applications, such as weather prediction, computerized tomography (CT), artificial intelligence (AI), and etc. Video-based advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) attracts great attention in recent years, which aims at helping drivers to become more concentrated when driving and giving proper warnings if any danger is insight. Typical ADAS includes lane departure warning, traffic sign detection, pedestrian detection, and etc. Both basic and advanced video/image processing technologies are deployed in video-based driver assistance system. The key requirements of driver assistance system are rapid processing time and low power consumption. We consider Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) as the most appropriate embedded platform for ADAS. Owing to the parallel architecture, an FPGA is able to perform high-speed video processing such that it could issue warnings timely and provide drivers longer time to response. Besides, the cost and power consumption of modern FPGAs, particular small size FPGAs, are considerably efficient. Compared to the CPU implementation, the FPGA video/image processing achieves about tens of times speedup for video-based driver assistance system and other applications.

Tuning the parameters of these pipelines for speed is subject to stringent image quality constraints and requires significant efforts from skilled programmers. Because quality is driven by perceptual factors with which most quantitative image metrics correlate poorly, developing new pipelines involves long iteration cycles, alternating between software implementation and visual evaluation by human experts. These concerns are compounded on modern computing platforms, which are increasingly mobile and heterogeneous. In this dissertation, we apply machine learning towards the design of high-performance, high-fidelity algorithms whose parameters can be optimized automatically on large-scale datasets via gradient based methods. Desde que nasce, um humano tem a capacidade de guardar um grande número de imagens na sua memória, criando padrões ao longo do tempo que o permitem diferenciar coisas. No entanto, o mesmo processo não é assim tão simples quando comparado a sistemas computacionais. Apesar da complexidade do processamento de imagens através de computadores, hoje em dia, as máquinas usam câmaras digitais como seus principais sensores. Mais recentemente, um tipo de robot tem vindo a destacar-se: os drones, também conhecidos por veículos aéreos não tripulados. De modo a processar imagens, os drones têm consigo uma unidade computacional destinada a esse m. Esta tese estuda a e ciência de vários microcomputadores no uso de processamento de imagem. Os resultados experimentais permitem ver que é possível integrar um destes sistemas num drone permitindo um processamento de imagem em tempo real. O caso de estudo escolhido para esta tese destina-se a monitorizar parques de estacionamento usando um drone. O drone tem a missão de voar sobre o parque e recolher algumas imagens. De seguida, estas irão ser processadas pelo microcomputador a bordo, detectando e contando quantos carros existem num parque de estacionamento num dado momento.<br>The sight is one of the most important human senses. Since we were born, the human collects a great amount of image data that, throughout time, creates object standards that allow differentiate things. Nevertheless, the same is not so simple using computers. Despite the difficulty of process images using computers, robots use nowadays digital cameras as main sensors. More recently, one type of robots is gathering more attention: Drones, also known by unmanned aerial vehicle. In order to process digital images, drones have to have a computational unit. This thesis studies the efficiency of several single-boards computers when used to process digital images. Experimental results shows that it is possible to have a single-board attached to the drones allowing real-time image processing. The case study chosen for this thesis is to use a drone to monitor parkings. The drone has the mission of ying above it and take images. Then, the single-board will process the images and try to detect cars on it, counting the total number of cars on parking car.
