Texto completoThe purpose of this thesis is to analyze the mother-daughter relationship in a corpus composed of thirteen works, mainly novels, published between 1962 and 2015, by seven Catalan authors. The latter write in Castilian (Esther Tusquets, Ana María Moix and Milena Busquets), in Catalan (Mercè Rodoreda, Carme Riera and Maria Mercè Roca) or in both languages (Jenn Díaz). The mother is linked to origins and identity and, in fact, the mother-daughter relationship is often a ravaged, conflicting, at least complex, area, which makes it an extremely rich subject for writing. We thus propose an analysis at the crossroads of history, sociology, psychology, psychoanalysis and literature which offers a new approach to the relationship of mother to daughter and of daughter to mother. This comparative work allows us to establish similarities between the representations of the maternal figure, typologies of mothers, while noting the diversity and complexity of the mother-daughter relationships in these works and their literary treatment. The mother becomes under the pen of these seven authors a central character, both real and symbolic, who is revisited, reinvented and transmitted through the pages of the literary work. Through this process, writing becomes a means of perpetuating the presence of the mother, of making her exist immortally in the collective memory

Texto completoThe aim of our study is to show evolution of a character, of an image, that of the mother, through novels, poetry and theatre, deeply influenced by the philosophical speech - which includes a medical, a demographic and a political approach. Under the cover of an innovating appearance it results in a increased deep- rootedness of the most conservative functions and images of the mother. The approach marks out three historical periods corresponding to stages, which differ in their intensity to represent motherhood - 1690-1729, 1730-1759, 1760-1790. And important out put of works about motherhood is noticeable in the last period. Concurrently it opens the way to the beaming image of the father confirmed in his powers as head of the family. The approach of the revolutionary period reveals a family that became the XIXth century family - the mother keeping central position, at least in certain precise fields, i. E home and young children's education - such philosophers as Rousseau and Diderot, such moralists as Marmontel and Florian such realistic writers as Retif de la Bretonne and Mercier place her within a constellation - like family where her part appears as more important although it remains a secondary one. The study of the different literary genres shows a certain lack in poetry because poetry had not yet started its evolution and remained tied to a descriptive type of speech that could not allow a possible evocation of intimist scenes imposing the character of the mother. Theatre and comedy in particular, also remained tied to conventions, although some bold prospects appeared with plays such as la mere confidente by marivaux or l'ecole des meres by nivelle de la chaussee. Only novels, a new and promissing genre in the XVIIIth century, seemed to be able to offer new looks on the character of the mother

Texto completoThe mother, more than any other character, is present in history, micro-history and the history of mentalities. Through its various evocations, in its very recurrence, she is a meaningful character. At first, we have confronted the romantic image of the mother with her social representation, we have focused on the middle class, the peasant and the working-class mothers, we have confronted legitimate and illegitimate motherhood, voluntary and compulsive motherhood. But analysing the mother character means concentrating on a romantic case, alchemy of numerous representations which participate in both the temporal and the timeless, the collective and the individual unconscious. We have studied the maternal declension from the glorious mother to the seven grieves blesses virgin, from the madonna to the scapegoat, until Colette tells us the story of Sido, until Cybele - the mother - goddess - dispenses death, until Mauriac gives birth to Genitrix, the mortiferous mother who condemns the king-child

Texto completoThe subject will be looked at through a combined study of her novels, and correspodance, as well as writings by members of her family. The novels chosen all feature the family prominently. The others writings include little known papers, that are likely to refine the image of the mother among Sand's descendants. The concept of "image" , not necessarly a reproduction of the Real, was of special interest here. The study revolves around Lacan's three concepts of the Real, the Imaginary and the Symbolic. First, the study of the Real is based on biographical writings. Some of the doubts that remain as to certain aspects of her life have been underscored thanks to a critical study of the sources. Secondly, we pondered about the passage from the image to the Imaginary - how is it performed ? Another interrogation was about the influence of the mother along Sand's artistic career, whose writting is both a means of escape and a form of sublimation. In the autobiographical writings, the description of the mother opens out on the exaltation of the father ; this is much less the case in novels, which include autobiographical remembrances, but are much more influenced by imagination, an ability which Sand inherited from her mother. Finally, the Symbolical will focus on the three recurrent metaphors of water, caves, and birds, which are all endowes with maternal qualities. Ultimately, the adoption of a psychoanalytical viewpoint seems to be the best way to capture the image of the mother in Sand's novels

Texto completoThe study of woman adultery representation in woman litterature allows to explain her subversive function and tobring some permanent facts of female sexuality to light. The analysis of six excepts (from "guigemar" of marie de france, "la princesse de cleves" of mme de la fayette, "valen tine" of g sand, "l'ingenue libertine" of colette, "les mandarins" of s. De beauvoir and "la chambre des dames" of j. Bourin) is made with the concepts of greimas' semiotique. The mother image, hidden under the one of the lover, correpondsto the most repressed part of woman psychoanalytic history : her love for her mother, and tokes its roots in the most primary narcissism. This repression explains the way of functionning of feminine desire as it is represented : her desire is maintened secret and lays on a splitting body mind. It is linked to a seduction model which recalls the primary seduc -tion excerced by the mother during the bodycare. The present sentimental litterature obeys the same requirements, even if the adultery lover gives his place to a pre-marital lover ; despite of the emergence of love mariage, only the lover and not the husband can sustain this love figure, merged and mystical, which is based on an ideal image of mother daughter relationship

Texto completoIn the works of marguerite duras, the mother-daughter relationship indicates not only one of her central themes but il also determines the meaning of writing itself. Il order to make the act of writing possible, the daughter has to deprive herself of the mother. To achieve the separation, there in no other way but the act of writing. The difficulty involved in the process makes her work more than a simple description of the mother-daugter relationship. The act of writing transforms and recreatres this relationship. The act of writing transforms and substitute to each other. This reciprocal reference also affects the rapport between the writing and the mothe-daugter relationship. The writing and this relationship give birth to each other and transform each other, of which process problematizes the dichotomous framework created between the copy and the originel, the fusion and the separation, or the one and the other

Texto completoThis thesis examines maternal figures in two novels and twenty-five short stories by Kate Chopin (1850-1904). It uses biographical, feminist, historical, psychoanalytical and structuralist approaches and is largely based on close literary analysis of the texts. Kate Chopin's fictional mothers overturn, in varying degrees, the traditional image of the nurturing, ever-present, protective mother. Motherhood is rarely complete, often distorted, always somehow failing. In these stories, the missing mother, repeatedly cut off by mourning, madness, separation or death, leaves a central gap. However, this absence is, paradoxically, essential to the narrative. Maternal lack literally generates the texts. Each story owes not only its drama but its very existence to the missing mother who, never quite present, is never explicitly expressed as such. In this way, the narrative process revolves around the unattainable "real" mother who resists the text, despite Chopin's repeated attempts to write her into this cycle of stories which, it becomes apparent, are woven around a series of repeated failures. The "real" mother, in Chopin’s work, lies elsewhere

Texto completoWestern women’s writing in the twentieth century is marked by the thematic prominence of matricide and matrophobia (Hirsch, 1991; Saint-Martin, 1999 ; Giorgio 2002). Working comparatively, this study addresses the years 1945-1968 as seen through six texts written by women in Quebec, France, and the United States. This study deploys the notion of “sacrifice,” as articulated by René Girard (1972, 1982) and Anne Dufourmantelle (2007), in order to delimit the textual representations of matrophobia and matricide engendered by these works. Drawing on feminist critiques of the “institution” of maternity (Rich, 1976; Irigaray, 1981; Olivier, 1980), this study pursues both a horizontal (systemic and causal) and vertical (learned or inherited) analysis of the act of sacrifice. It further draws on Girard’s seminal exploration of “myth” in order to examine the period’s discursive constructions of the mother. Far from being synonymous with a restoration of social harmony as René Girard argues, the “sacrifice” of mothers (and daughters, through an identification with their mothers) incites the destruction of the societies depicted by these authors. These texts relate women’s unease with the institutions of maternity during a period of political and socio-cultural upheaval regarding the role and status of mothers in the three countries concerned. Through its exploration of the ontology of sacrifice, this thesis illustrates the extraordinary influence of an ideology, which in its time, condemned women and mothers, in some cases, to both a literal and symbolic death

Texto completoThe first part is studying of different stages, that arab woman-mother is travelling in the course of centuries. Next, her image in the religions, her duties and her rights in the midst of the family and in the society are examined,. The second part makes an index of the images and the visions in the arab mother in the poetry and the epic. Also is analysed maternam influence in the carrier of the writer: mayy ziyada. In the third part, it is a matter of studying the maternals lives and the images in the arabic literature of xxe century with the three authors as : taha husayn (1889-1973) egypt- mikha'il nu'ayma (1889-1988) lebanon- sakr al-rushud (1941-1973) kuwait. Romantics or theatricale works in those authors only are studying, in which the maternal presence and romm of the mother occupies the important place. The principal themes who give off the works are: the family. The marriage, the conflicts between the two generations, the woman and the liberty. Some common maternal types with these three authors are several, to be notified: the traditionals, the educators, the weaks, the mothers in mourning. The three authors one common cause : the one is "woman-mother", her life, her liberty

Texto completoThe image of the mother is at the center of the negro-African written literature problems such as: bilinguism, search of a cultural identity, nationalism movements, agricultural civilizations and town development, matriarchy-patriarcale clash, Oedipus myth, research of fitting critical methodologies. Such a discomfort expressed through the image of a genitrix gives way to a double challenge: to soil and to re-create it unblemished. This ambiguity is displayed in Mongo Beti, Labou Tansi, Tati-Loutard, Tchicaya, Kourouma, Senghor and in the feminine literature the double image puts to light the characteristics of a specific literature and a given time (mythological critical essays). This conflict comes to an end through the integration of the traditional principales of orality which meaning is being adjusted

Texto completoThis thesis follows a chronological study of the evolution of the mythical image of the raven in European literature. In the first part it describes the sacred and divine origins of the raven in simple tales and written myths and presents the raven as both divinity and a companion of divinities. The passage from myth, to superstition and magic, transforms its image as sacred raven into that of diabolical raven. The influence of the Judeo-Christian complex completes this negative image, which began as both good and evil. In tales, legends, and fables, the biblical image merges with the mythic corpus. In the second part, we see that in 19th and 20th century literature its role changes from that of an acting personality to a sign or a symbol. H. Heine, W. Muller, E. Allen Poe and F. Nietzsche use the raven as the symbol of all the ills of the century during the romantic period. It is the symbol of war and interior and exterior upheaval in A. Rimbaud, G. Trakl, J. Giono, J-P. Sartre and I. Calvino. Its symbolism is again double as in mythology - at once destroyer and creator. For F. Zorn, the raven is the symbol of death and deliverance. In the third part we see that the corruption of the image of the raven as an active personality and as a symbol is thrown into question. With irony and exaggeration, W. Busch and C. Morgenstern present ravens that are grotesque caricatures of the sacred and diabolic bird. The importance of the image of the raven in European civilization is confirmed in painting. It symbolizes, as in literature, external trouble and strife and the interior psychology of the artist. The image of the raven in literature is an example of the constant exchanges between different civilizations, of communication between people and embodies their common aspirations
Dos, Santos Ana Clara. "Le rôle de la mère dans la tragédie de Corneille et de Racine". Paris 3, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1996PA030084.
Texto completoWheter one is dealing with mythological, historical or religious characters. At corneille and racine's theater mothers are always women inserted in a dual relationships system that objects them to their husbands and children. As they have been reduced to a private life and rejected by public domain, which is exclusive for men, every speech as far as they are concerned, either as a text or in image, links them, since very early, to two main tasks : wife and family mother. Thus, according to ancientry tradition where it is based on, both racine and corneille's tragedy inserts always its maternal characters in two universal maternal archetypes : the good mother - painful mother - and the bad mother, awful mother - monstrous mother. Racine and corneille place their maternal characters in a main subject field at great century eyes : the subject of nature. Therefore, maternal presence allows the creation of an edifying tragedy which rewards good actions and concerns bad ones

Texto completoThis work concentrates on a diachronic presentation, through autobiographies and novels written by women of letters, of the evolution of the way in which the relationships between mother and daughter are depicted and of their essential importance in the works. This evolution follows the accession of women to a level of social recognition which has mainly been attained during the 20th century; after having been a novelistic model for Sand and Colette, the mother figure becomes a social emblem under the pen of Leduc and above all of Beauvoir who theorizes her place and exploitation which are amplified in her novels and autobiographical narratives. The mother then becomes an allegorical figure embodying death according to Duras and Yourcenar, before providing Cardinal and Sarraute with the opportunity of a liberation through speech. The following women writers, in an opposite process, turn the mother at the end of her life into a role model, in whom they can recognize themselves to the extent that they submit themselves entirely to her will, in Châtelet’s works. After having freed themselves from the mother figure and having written against her, women writers now write for her; the emergence of a feminine literature followed up a liberation from the mother, but the process has been reversed

Texto completoA bearer of moral values, the foreigner allows Endo to interrogate Japanese psychology. Starting from the uneasiness of a Japanese living in the Occident, he clearly opposes the French sinner to the Japanese who lacks a sense of guilt. He describes the Japanese having difficulties in communicating with others, and he confronts the occidental missionary pharisaic and zealous with the inert Japanese preacher. He also depicts a French person who acts like a paragon for Japanese having bad conscience. Moreover, he describes France which signals for the Japanese their split. After having laid the weakness in the heart of the Japanese religious sensibility, mixed with the feeling of guilt, he pictures the encounter of Japan with the Occident. At last, he offers the image of the Ganges starting a salutary change in one Japanese woman. If the occidental missionary reveals the immorality or the amorality of the Japanese, the pagan foreigner contributes to the apparition of moral conscience in the last one. When the missionary no longer has vigour, he Japanizes Jesus, man of pain

Texto completoThe mother, the grandmother, or the mother-in-law… No matter what name is used, it is always about the woman’s entity. It is these different types of the woman sketched both in the Arabic and French novels of the end of the 20th century that have the responsibility to portray the society in which they belong which is the Middle Eastern one. To conceive an idea of the Arabic mother does not only mean having to know all the factors that influence her personality, all the roles that she has to play within her family and the crucial place that she occupies within the social hierarchy; but also, understanding the real evolution of the relationship that men and women are entertaining. However, interrogations arise in the minds nowadays. Is the romantic representation of the mother always the stereotypical image evoked in the majority of novels? Does it succeed in portraying the new trends and the lived experiences particularly by the mother and by the woman in general? Does this romantic representation remain true to the social reality? Or does it illustrate a fictional image that novelists are looking for? It is the answer to these questions that will show itself throughout our research and which will accentuate the artistic side of this representation

Texto completoThis thesis comes after a work published in 1982 : "antisemitism in russia" by anne-marie rosenthal (paris - presses universitaires de france) describing the conditions in which the jews lived in russia, conditions coming from their exceptional statute. Effectively, during centuries those exceptional laws changed them in a particular human group, in russia like in every catholicized coutry. This thesis starts from the fact that catholicism (became orthodoxy in russia) opened for the first time in that country a particular attitude ntowards the jews. The characteristics of the jews coming from their juridical situation, being explicable, do not have any interest for scientific research. The works, red, describing those explicable features, for this reason were discarted. - after having analysed works of numerous writers (and seven principal among them) describing characteristics of the jews, after having recapituled, a conclusion appeared : there is a difference or an opposition in sexual field between the two catholic orthodox and judaic spheres. This field is not conditioned by the exceptional laws

Texto completoIn this thesis, the subject we wanted to discuss is that of the representation and transfigurations of the foreign city in French writing. We have chosen the works of Pierre Loti, Victor Segalen, Pierre-Jean Remy and Suzanne Bernard, in order to explain the subject with the help of concrete examples, that is to say by analyzing the image of the city of Beijing in different French works of the twentieth century. During this study, we take a deep look at the image of Beijing, and especially at its historical evolution, as described by the authors of the different periods that we have presented. We chose to study this evolution of Beijing's image from three dimensions. The first dimension is that of the city history, as well as that of its presence in the literary text and its influence on representation. This is a rather geocritical approach that examines the relationships between human spaces and literature. The second dimension is the Beijing signs’ dimension. We will study the texts according to an imagological perspective, focusing on how the writer transcribes reality, as well as on the representation of the object of study. Finally, the third dimension is about the evolution of novelistic forms and writing
Laharpe, Nicole de. "Les stereotypes nationaux dans les tischreden de luther. Image de l'autre et image de soi". Strasbourg 2, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997STR20076.
Texto completoLuther's tischreden (table talk), an important medium of the reformer's concepts, have often been overlooked by critics. Yet the diversity of the themes he tackled gives us an overall view of his ideas and concerns during the latter part of his life which was characterized by his polemics against the turks, the jews and the pope. Based on the weimar edition, the present study establishes luther's perception of the germans and foreigners (italians, jews, turks) and endeavours to bring to the fore the extent to which this image was dependent on existing stereotypes or created new ones. If due to the cultural antagonism between germany and italy, one notices a symmetry concerning a number of stereotypes (the simplicity, naivety, love of truth of the germans as opposed to the cleverness, cunning and mendacity of the italians), and if the image of italy suffers from its identification with the papacy, one is not aware in luther of any particular glorification of germany; on the contrary the faults of the germans in general and of each german region in particular are denounced without any pity. The christian anti-judaism and the prejudices it conveys are taken up by luther, as by the majority of his contemporaries; however the tischreden, often filled with hostility, do not peddle the calumny contained in his last writings. Despite his visceral suspicion, luther does not remain insentive to the fate of the jewish people. The image of the turks is centred on the fear raised by the political and military events on the one hand and on the muslim religion on the other; the latter lutter refuses to view any differently than as a lie. The comparison between the qualities and defects of each group with those of the world in general reveals that luther's arguments are essentially religious. His intention is not to stigmatize the particular defects of each nation but to denounce everywhere the different forms of sin from which man cannot escape
Baron, Marian-Ovidiu. "Paysage et image poétique chez Ilarie Voronca, Benjamin Fondane et Henri Michaux". Nice, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007NICE2026.
Texto completoOur thesis studies the landscape and the poetic image at Ilarie Voronca, Benjamin Fondane and Henri Michaux, by following the common thematic elements and the artistic specificities of those writers from the perspective of the comparative literature. The first part of our thesis, "Composition / decomposition of the self by the image" presents the distinctive features of the self (changeable, multiple) and its influence on the poetic images. The self is ambiguous and its discontinuity transmits to the text a tension which reaches its maximum when associated with the emptiness. The second part "The eternal and impossible voyage" concerns the numerous values of the movement which governs the constant change of the poetic landscape, the motivations of the choices related to the voyage and the evolution of the imagination according to this topic. We also study the relation voyage-life-text and some figures of representative travellers for the texts of the three authors - Plume, Robinson, Ulysses. The voyage is made in different regions of the real and the imaginary world, with temporary incursions into the memory and it appears in various forms, as the escape, the simple discovery or the adventure. The third part, “Ways of living, ways of looking at” approaches the problem of the image in a more theoretical way, with the analysis of several related terms and their impact on the texts. A fundamental relationship is the one established between the landscape and the space, at the physical and psychic levels. The glance becomes a creative agent of the literary text, functioning as an organ of perception and as a genuine aesthetic filter

Texto completoThe object of this work is to analyse some of the reasons and cultural and literary motivations that generated, during the enlightenment, an image of scotland which was later to be fully developed by romanticism. In this analysis, the publication ossian's apocryphal poems is considered as a fundamental moment in the creation of this image. Three aspects of scotland's identity issue - which may appear as marginal compared to the main identity question raised by the act of union - are dealt with in the poems: the rediscovery of the past through the study of the remains of scotland's early history and the study of ancient historical documents; the discovery of the highlands, which were considered as a terra incognita up to the second half of the century; and the discovery of the northern populations, considered as miraculously untouched by the corrupting influence of progress and civilisation. These three quests are explored by macpherson in the poems of ossian, but they also share a common notion: a deep concern for the place of scotland in the enlightened europe of the eighteenth century. This major question goes beyond the political and cultural problem generated by the union and the jacobite risings. It was fueled by the dilemna face by eighteenth century scotland, which had to chose between primitivism and polite civilisation, between the enlightened side of the lowlands and the darker side of the highlands, between a litterary and cultural world claiming strong links with the south of europe and the mediterranean tradition, and the temptation of creating an image of scotland which would rest on a revisited, sctrictly scottish cultural tradition. The poems of ossian reveal an attempt at reconciliating scotland with itself

Texto completoOur research on the image of the « other » try to analyze in the context of history, environment, Western influence in China, the representative or the representatives of the image of the « other » in modern society, the words and purpose of the Chinese women writers such as Can Xue 残雪 (1953-), Lin Bai 林白 (1958-), Chen Ran 陈染 (1962-), Wei Hui 卫慧 (1973-), Mian Mian 棉棉 (1970-) etc., why and how « I » is interested in the « other » and what is their relationship. We will focus mainly to the works of contemporary female stories in China, to understand what form the « other » has taken, especially what is the image of the metaphorical « other » as animals, objects, people or abstract images as evil, color, fear. We study the relationship between the « I » and the « other » through the characters in the selected works by studying images of the « mother », « father » and especially the relationship with the « I » and also why and how the knowledge of the « other » self develops in the literary world, and finally how the image of the « other » evolves

Texto completoIn this work we set three critical periods in the life of the mother-daughter : childhood of the daughter in Le Bruit des choses vivantes, teen girl in L’île de la Merci and La chute du corps, adulthood of the woman and the old age of the mother in L’ingratitude and Adieu Agnès. Overall, this study is an analysis of the entire cycle of life of a mother and a daughter, from the child's birth until the old age of the mother. Proceeding in chronological order, we will discuss some key issues for the mother-daughter relationship in different periods, such as tension between symbiosis and separation, between choking and independence, between distance and attachment, and different attitudes about sexuality, the condemnation of death and the affirmation of life. Finally through analysis of various relationships between mothers and daughters, we see that, in life, the motherdaughter relationship undergoes great changes that is often full of conflict, misunderstandings, or worse tragedies. However, we can see that there are still possible solutions to fix them. Faced with their complex relationship, which is essential for both the mother and the daughter is to find ways to be informed, to negotiate and to understand each other throughout life

An anlysis of the writer with respect to his characters shows that they feel the force of the unknown mysteries origins and beyond their control. It is supernatural. We generally call it the diabolical force. In the novels of Julien Green, the supernatural force is not superior to the human condition, rather, it comes from the call of darkness inside, so that an unknown form is made. He takes human weekness exemplify boredom, disgust, despair and disbelief. These diabolical signs are embodied the archetypical image of the devil

Texto completoThis thesis explores the mechanisms of learning and transmission of ritual know-how and memory. It does so through the analysis of one agricultural ritual celebrated during the dry season (tukari) at a family temple (xiriki) in a huichol (wixarika) indigenous community of Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitlan - Tuapurie of Mexico. The ritual is taken as a simplified model and analysed under a relational perspective, by focusing on each form of expression and communication as well as their mode of articulation and inseparability. These structure the thesis in three main parts: ritual interaction, shamanic chant and artefact manipulation. Personhood and identity (sexual and ethnic) are undertakenat each level of the analysis by focusing on the paradoxical identity of the enunciator and on three ritual identities - mother maize, elder brother deer and flower child - emerged by the condensation of contradictory relational modes. The complex relational configuration resulting in enacted and put into ipmage, offering a new frame to the definition and understanding of wixarika identity. The study of the manipulation and the collective production of imagery reflects on this particular mode of ritual expressivity as well as on its role in the preservation and construction of memory. Ritual complexity is therefore explored as an efficacious strategy in the reproduction of the vigourous cultural tradition of the the wixaritari (Huichol)

Texto completoThe inserting of the work of art in the short story takes an unequalled importance in the 19th and 20th centuries probably because of its brief form. The union of these too factors provides food for reflexion in connexion with the symbolism of the portrait in these short stories. Motive for a redoobling, it is in the fanciful literature that its utilization is the most expressive. The pictures make the meaning gleam and become the focal point for a query about identity. Through the revival of the allegory figur, a pattern of symbolical représentation appers which leads the readers to encercled the essential being with an aesthetic route. Transcandency of a dualite body-spirit formaly based on the quest of the absolut and thought of the art as the revelation of a hidden thruth. The portrait in literature makes its way to reach the deepest parts of the being through a deviation from the sence. Surch of initiation into the labyrinth of the text towards the acceptance of a gap

Texto completoJulian's culture is a product of a school-system as well as of intellectual and ideological trends. The prince ran along the whole succession of school cycles. His work settles a scale of literary values in accordance with the school-pattern, but also lays down an ideologically-founded dichotomy between good and bad books. In fact, Julian's work is extensively built upon texts ignored by the claimed scale or condemned on ideological grounds. The major texts often come down to it by indirect ways as short excerpts. Besides, it displays an amount of learning on different matters. Some of these (rhetoric, philosophy) precisely reflect the school curriculum, while others (history, geography, astronomy) are marked with preoccupations which are typical of the age. Furthermore, Julian's work reveals, concerning culture or culture-linked matters, such opinions and feelings as to express, behind praised values, a real devaluation of the ancient literary heritage, of the functions of culture, of learning, even of hellenism

Texto completoThe foundation of the works of the moroccan novelist driss chraibi is an attempt to reconcile a mystic and muslim he could never rid himself, of and a western contribution which must necessarily be integrated in order to reach an arabe model wisch would be a balance between the eastern and the western worlds. In the face of such a complex and difficult issue, is it possible to explain how chraibi has to some extent achieved this synthesis after a stage of radical opposition followed by a period when he questioned himself on the woman ? thus the study of his works can be divided into three parts. The first part "the rebellion" deals more particularly with his first two novels passe simple (1954) and les boucs (1955), and with his violent criticism against the arab society on the other hand. The second part "the crisi of the woman" illustrates the shades of opinion given by writer himself on his former judgements. . .

Texto completoThe major objective of this dissertation has been the analysis of the figurative mechanisms of the pictural representations of venice, as well as the cultural background which produced such a mythical elaboration. The global approach of the venetian myth is carried through three fundamental themes. The primary level taken into consideration is that of religious imagery, including more specifically the whole rhetoric of the city's virginity : the dogma of the immaculate conception makes up one of its major foundations, as well as the image of the sedes sapientiae inspiring some pictures representating venice directly partaking of the theological mechanisms of salvation. The venice jerusalem metaphor belongs to a similar context, one of the chief sources being of course the writings of foreign observers and travellers. The political imagery constitutes the second tier of our analysis : the representation of justicia is one of the great models of venice self-representation, along with the major parallel with constantinople. Time and its semantic variations are the third aspect of our dissertation : nothing can be properly understood without stressing the venitian notion of "circular" time. A comparison with rome is in this respect of paramount importance, along with the use of vocabulary of ancient rome : image of sea-born venus is one of its

Texto completoAn investigation on the image of the Jew in the Italian serialized story between 1870 and 1915. The end of the temporal power of the church poses at the Italian society, among other serious questions, that of laicity of the new national state. The serialized becomes the place of a battle against (rarely for) laic culture. Are examined here two novels published in "La civiltà cattolica", three other novels published respectively in "Roma" and two small reviews, finally, in addition to the novel left in volume of Carolina Invernizio considered the author by antonomasia the serial, a family saga published in "Nuova Antologia". Principal topic, the disappearance of the Jew, either by conversion or by assimilation, while the topic of exiles with all that attached to it misses. The negativity of the representation is pressed at the same time on old stereotypes put into service of the combat against the laicity and on the silence which surrounds a non-catholic spirituality

Texto completoOur work focuses on the circumstances and the consequences of the insertion of imagery in thetextual body on writing. What are the issues and the implications of such an approach when it is conducted knowingly by the writer? In contemporary European literature, A. S. Byatt and Peter Handke are of those who handle the quill like a brush and work language as a plastic substance;their attitude is that of the artist who works the fictional universe in depth, nourishing and transforming script-writing through an acquisition centred entirely on watching. Literature as substance questions itself in a way which is far from a rather traditional approach which treats the plastic image as a simple source of inspiration, as is exemplified by the work of Tracy Chevalier.Certain non-classable works, like Henri Matisse, Roman by Louis Aragon or Cantique de Matisse by Michel Butor choose the mixed-genre to touch a possible literature-painting harmony. Musicmingles at times passing across boundaries among the arts. What happens when the writer can becalled, appropriately, “plastic arts technician”? Though indeed situated in an intersemiotic literature-plastic arts approach, this research does not intend to analyze how painting is inserted inthe text by way of transposition or illustration. Moreover, it is not concerned with discerning the pictorial modalities contained in the textual apparatus and dissimulating the effects or assimilating stricto sensu the technique of a painter to that of a writer

Texto completoIn his republican pamphlets, John Milton fights against three main enemies, i. E. The late king Charles I and two French monarchists, Claude Saumaise and Alexander More. Against them, he builds up a lot of satirical images, involving animals, sexual behaviours, the medicine and the theatre. He is influenced by William Shakespeare. A lot of bodily images and symbols are derived from contemporary medical thought. Milton's main purpose in his republican pamphlets is to expose in public view the illusions which enslave men and to fight political propaganda. He presents himself like a hero, a bard, a prophet and a soldier, with a mission. In doing so, lie compares himself with a lot of mythological figures, from Orpheus and Osiris, to Samson and Hercules
