Resumen
Abstract Hyperbolic metamaterials represent a class of nanophotonic architectures with the possibility of controlling density of optical states. Due to this property, hyperbolic metamaterials can be employed as meta-electrodes in optoelectronic devices. On the other hand, lead halide perovskites have several promising properties for application in light-emitting devices. Moreover, a perovskite film is easily deposited on a hyperbolic metamaterial surface. Here, we theoretically show how to accelerate radiative recombination in a perovskite film with a hyperbolic metamaterial. This effect can be applied in light-emitting devices, where radiative recombination is extremely important.

Resumen
I demonstrate that hyperbolic metamaterials may provide the solution to the long-standing prob- lem of the fundamental diffraction limit plaguing conventional microscopy and optical imaging sys- tems. Presented here is the formalism of the theory, classical electrodynamics, used to describe the diffraction limit and sub-wavelength imaging using hyperbolic metamaterials. Effective medium theory is then derived and put forth as a design method for such hyperbolic metamaterials. I then outline the design of a planar device based on a hyperbolic metamaterial for use in infrared mi- croscopy, and present numerical simulations to demonstrate the behaviour and performance of the device. The device employs multilayers of InGaAs/AlInAs and is capable of sub-diffraction imaging resolution in the wavelength range of 8.8 - 10.5 μm. I show that high spatial frequency waves, which normally decay in vacuum, are allowed to propagate and reach the far-field in a hyperbolic meta- material. Using a Green’s function formalism to describe optical sources, sub-wavelength imaging capabilities of hyperbolic metamaterials is shown. Finally, potential device applications using the designed metamaterial are motivated.

Resumen
It is well known that extraordinary photons in hyperbolic metamaterials may be described as living in an effective Minkowski spacetime, which is defined by the peculiar form of the strongly anisotropic dielectric tensor in these metamaterials. Here, we demonstrate that within the scope of this approximation, the sound waves in hyperbolic metamaterials look similar to gravitational waves, and therefore the quantized sound waves (phonons) look similar to gravitons. Such an analogue model of quantum gravity looks especially interesting near the phase transitions in hyperbolic metamaterials where it becomes possible to switch quantum gravity effects on and off as a function of metamaterial temperature. We also predict strong enhancement of sonoluminescence in ferrofluid-based hyperbolic metamaterials, which looks analogous to particle creation in strong gravitational fields.

Resumen
AbstractSearching for natural materials exhibiting larger electron-electron interactions constitutes a traditional approach to high-temperature superconductivity research. Very recently, we pointed out that the newly developed field of electromagnetic metamaterials deals with the somewhat related task of dielectric response engineering on a sub-100-nm scale. Considerable enhancement of the electron-electron interaction may be expected in such metamaterial scenarios as in epsilon near-zero (ENZ) and hyperbolic metamaterials. In both cases, dielectric function may become small and negative in substantial portions of the relevant four-momentum space, leading to enhancement of the electron pairing interaction. This approach has been verified in experiments with aluminum-based metamaterials. Metamaterial superconductor with Tc=3.9 K have been fabricated, which is three times that of pure aluminum (Tc=1.2 K), which opens up new possibilities to improve the Tc of other simple superconductors considerably. Taking advantage of the demonstrated success of this approach, the critical temperature of hypothetical niobium, MgB2- and H2S-based metamaterial superconductors is evaluated. The MgB2-based metamaterial superconductors are projected to reach the liquid nitrogen temperature range. In the case of an H2S-based metamaterial, the projected Tc appears to reach ~250 K.

Resumen
In this paper, we investigated the features of plasmon-polaritons excited at the interface of a magnetoelectric hyperbolic metamaterial and a dielectric for the case when the optical axis is arbitrary oriented under the normal to the boundary. Expressions are obtained for the complex electric and magnetic vectors as well as for the decay constants of the fields on both sides of the interface. The possibility is shown and the conditions are determined for localization of plasmon-polariton at the boundary of metamaterial of different types. It is shown that the wave vector of plasmon-polariton has the component oriented perpendicular to the boundary. It is established that for metamaterials of different types changing the orientation of the optical axis one can realize the conditions when the phase velocity of plasmon-polariton is directed from the boundary inside a metamaterial or a dielectric.

The possibility is established and the conditions are found for localization of plasmon-polaritons (PPs) near the boundaries of hyperbolic metamaterials (HMs) of both I and II types with arbitrary orientation of the optical axis. It is grounded that such surface PP has the transverse spin momentum which depends on the wavelength of the exciting wave, the orientation of the optical axis of the hyperbolic metamaterial, and dielectric properties of bordered media.

Resumen
In this study, a novel hybrid metamaterial has been developed via fulfilling hyperbolic chiral lattice with polyurethane (PU) foam. Initially, both the hyperbolic and typical body-centered cubic (BCC) lattices are fabricated by 3D printing technique. These lattices are infiltrated in a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) solution dissolved in 1,4-Dioxane, and then freeze casting technique is applied to achieve the PU-foam-filling. Intermediate (IM) layers possessing irregular pores, are formed neighboring to the lattice-foam interface. While, the foam far from the lattice exhibits a multi-layered structure. The mechanical behavior of the hybrid lattice metamaterials has been investigated by monotonic and cyclic compressive tests. The experimental monotonic tests indicate that, the filling foam is able to soften the BCC lattice but to stiffen the hyperbolic one, further to raise the stress plateau and to accelerate the densification for both lattices. The foam hybridization also benefits the hyperbolic lattice to prohibit the property degradation under the cyclic compression. Furthermore, the failure modes of the hybrid hyperbolic lattice are identified as the interface splitting and foam collapse via microscopic analysis. Finally, a parametric study has been performed to reveal the effects of different parameters on the compressive properties of the hybrid hyperbolic lattice metamaterial.

We review the properties of hyperbolic metamaterials and show that they are promising candidates as substrates for nanoimaging, nanosensing, fluorescence engineering, and controlling thermal emission. Hyperbolic metamaterials can support unique bulk modes, tunable surface plasmon polaritons, and surface hyperbolic states (Dyakonov plasmons) that can be used for a variety of applications. We compare the effective medium predictions with practical realizations of hyperbolic metamaterials to show their potential for radiative decay engineering, bioimaging, subsurface sensing, metaplasmonics, and super-Planckian thermal emission.

Resumen
Indefinite optical properties, which are typically characterized by hyperbolic dispersion relations, have not been observed in naturally occurring materials, but can be realized through a metamaterial approach. We present here the design, fabrication and characterization of nanowire metamaterials with indefinite permittivity, in which all-angle negative refraction of light is observed. The bottom-up fabrication technique, which applies electrochemical plating of nanowires in porous alumina template, is developed and demonstrated in achieving uniform hyperbolic optical properties at a large scale. We developed techniques to improve the uniformity and to reduce the defect density in the sample. The non-magnetic design and the off-resonance operation of the nanowire metamaterials significantly reduce the energy loss of electromagnetic waves and make the broad-band negative refraction of light possible.

Resumen
Abstract Enhancement of weak Casimir forces is extremely important for their practical detection and subsequent applications in variety of scientific and technological fields. We study the lateral Casimir forces acting on the rotating particles with small radius of 50 nm as well as that with large radius of 500 nm near the hyperbolic metamaterial made of silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires. It is found that the lateral Casimir force acting on the small particle of 50 nm near hyperbolic metamaterial with appropriate filling fraction can be enhanced nearly four times comparing with that acting on the same particle near SiC bulk in the previous study. Such enhancement is caused by the coupling between the resonance mode excited by nanoparticle and the hyperbolic mode supported by hyperbolic metamaterial. The results obtained in this study provide an efficient method to enhance the interaction of nanoscale objects.

A stratiform hyperbolic metamaterial comprises multiple units of symmetrical metal-dielectric film, stacked to have a precisely equivalent refractive index, admittance, and iso-frequency curve. A metamaterial that is composed of stacks of symmetrical films as a waveguide to couple a diffracted wave into a horizontally propagating plasmonic wave is designed herein. By tuning the parameters of the constituent thin films within a hyperbolic metamaterial, both the loss of the plasmonic wave and admittance matching are minimized and optimized, respectively.

Resumen
The future applications of hyperbolic metamaterials demand stacks of materials with alternative ultra-thin conductive/dielectric films with good homogeneity of the thickness and reduced roughness level. In this work, the technology of pulsed-DC magnetron sputtering of aluminum was optimized using the Taguchi method in order to fabricate Al films with improved roughness level. The performed structural characterization proved the smaller Al domains and better homogeneity of the surface. The optimized process was used to fabricate a multilayer structure of Al/HfOx as the metamaterial media. The fabricated structures were optically characterized in the UV/VIS range. The presented findings demonstrated the tunability effect of the effective reflectance of the examined stacks. The presented results are promising for the future application of multilayer structures in novel photonic devices based on hyperbolic metamaterials.

Resumen
We present here tunable and reconfigurable designs of linear and nonlinear plasmonic and hyperbolic metamaterials. Rich scattering features of multilayered composite nanoparticles are demonstrated, which include complex and exotic scattering signatures combining multiple dipolar Fano resonances and electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) features. These dipole-dipole multi-Fano scattering responses can be further tuned through altering the plasmonic properties of the concentric layers or the permittivity of the core, for instance, by the presence of nonlinearities. Strong third-order nonlinear effects, such as optical bistability, may also be induced in the scattering response of nonlinear nanoparticles due to the highly enhanced and confined fields inside their core. Nonlinear hyperbolic metamaterial designs are also explored, which can realize tunable positive-to-negative refraction at the same frequency, as a function of the input intensity. Negative Goos-Hänchen shift is demonstrated based only on the hyperbolic dispersion properties of these layered metamaterials without the usual need of negative index metamaterials. The Goos-Hänchen shift may be tuned from positive-to-negative values, when the structure is illuminated with different frequencies. A plethora of applications are envisioned based on the proposed tunable metamaterials, such as ultrafast reconfigurable imaging devices, tunable sensors, novel nanotag designs, and efficient all-optical switches and memories.

Resumen
The growing development of nanotechnology requires the design of new devices that integrate different functionalities at a reduced scale. For on-chip applications such as optical communications or biosensing, it is necessary to selectively transmit a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This function is performed by the so-called band-pass filters. While several plasmonic nanostructures of complex fabrication integrated to optical waveguides have been proposed, hyperbolic metamaterials remain almost unexplored for the design of integrated band-pass filters at optical wavelengths. By making use of the effective medium theory and finite integration technique, in this contribution we numerically study an integrated device consisting of a one-dimensional hyperbolic metamaterial placed on top of a photonic waveguide. The results show that the filling fraction, period, and number of layers modify the spectral response of the device, but not for type II and effective metal metamaterials. For the proposed Au-TiO2 multilayered system, the filter operates at a wavelength of 760 nm, spectral bandwidth of 100 nm and transmission efficiency above 40%. The designed devices open new perspectives for the development of integrated band-pass filters of small scale for on-chip integrated optics applications.

In this paper, it is shown that under the conditions of total internal reflection of plane homogeneous electromagnetic waves at the interface of a hyperbolic metamaterial and an ordinary isotropic medium, special inhomogeneous electromagnetic waves are excited in certain circumstances near the surface of the metamaterial and their amplitude changes with distance according to the non-exponential law. The existence conditions for such waves are established for the case when the optical axis is located within the interface plane and forms an angle with the plane of incidence. The energy flux and the energy density of special inhomogeneous waves in a hyperbolic metamaterial are determined.

Resumen
Dipole-dipole interactions (Vdd) between closely spaced atoms and molecules are related to real photon and virtual photon exchange between them and decrease in the near field connected with the characteristic Coulombic dipole field law. The control and modification of this marked scaling with distance have become a long-standing theme in quantum engineering since dipole-dipole interactions govern Van der Waals forces, collective Lamb shifts, atom blockade effects, and Förster resonance energy transfer. We show that metamaterials can fundamentally modify these interactions despite large physical separation between interacting quantum emitters. We demonstrate a two orders of magnitude increase in the near-field resonant dipole-dipole interactions at intermediate field distances (10 times the near field) and observe the distance scaling law consistent with a super-Coulombic interaction theory curtailed only by absorption and finite size effects of the metamaterial constituents. We develop a first-principles numerical approach of many-body dipole-dipole interactions in metamaterials to confirm our theoretical predictions and experimental observations. In marked distinction to existing approaches of engineering radiative interactions, our work paves the way for controlling long-range dipole-dipole interactions using hyperbolic metamaterials and natural hyperbolic two-dimensional materials.

Resumen
The main features of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that can propagate in a metamaterial–magnetic plasma structure are studied from theoretical perspectives. Both the conventional and imaginary parts of the dispersion relation of SPPs are demonstrated considering transverse magnetic (TM) polarization. We examine and discuss the influence of the external magnetic field. The results demonstrate that this factor dramatically alters the nature of SPPs. It is concluded that the positions and propagation lengths of SPPs can be engineered. Moreover, we present an approach allowing for an absorption enhancement that is a pivotal factor in antenna design. A unified insight into the practical methods aiming to attain hyperbolic dispersion by means of nanostructured and nanowire metamaterials is demonstrated.

Resumen
We develop a concept of highly efficient broadband light absorber based on nonuniform hyperbolic metamaterial. We suggest a gradual bending of the anisotropy axis inside the metamaterial that results in spatial shift of the area of resonant absorption depending on the incidence angle. In this resonant region the wavevector of light is parallel to the generatrix of resonant cone and the radiation losses are maximal because of extremely high value of refraction index. Changing the radiation frequency also shifts the spatial position of the resonant region so that high level of absorption may be achieved in wide frequency range. Using the model of nanowire medium (silver wires in silica host) we predict that 200 nm film of this hyperbolic metamaterial allows reaching almost total absorption of radiation throughout the visible band.

Resumen
We present analytical and computational studies of light emission in nonlocal metamaterials formed by arrays of aligned plasmonic nanowires. We demonstrate that the emission lifetime in these composites is a complex function of geometrical and material parameters of the system that cannot be reduced to the “trivial” hyperbolic or elliptical dispersion topology of a homogenised metamaterial. In particular, our studies suggest that the Purcell factor can often be maximized when the composite operates in the elliptic regime, with strong radiation coupling to an additional TM-polarized mode supported by the nonlocal composite, in contrast to the accepted “hyperbolicity related” enhancement.

Resumen
AbstractSecond harmonic generation (SHG) with a material of large transparency is an attractive way of generating coherent light sources at exotic wavelength range such as VUV, UV and visible light. It is of critical importance to improve nonlinear conversion efficiency in order to find practical applications in quantum light source and high resolution nonlinear microscopy, etc. Here an enhanced SHG with conversion efficiency up to 10−2% at SH wavelength of 282.7 nm under 11 GW/cm2 pump intensity via the excitation of anapole in lithium niobite (LiNbO3, or LN) nanodisk through the dominating d33 nonlinear coefficient is investigated. The anapole has advantages of strongly suppressing far-field scattering and well-confined internal field which helps to boost the nonlinear conversion. Anapoles in LN nanodisk is facilitated by high index contrast between LN and substrate with properties of near-zero-index via hyperbolic metamaterial structure design. By tailoring the multi-layers structure of hyperbolic metamaterials, the anapole excitation wavelength can be tuned at different wavelengths. It indicates that an enhanced SHG can be achieved at a wide range of pump light wavelengths via different design of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) hyperbolic metamaterials substrates. The proposed nanostructure in this work might hold significances for the enhanced light–matter interactions at the nanoscale such as integrated optics.

Resumen
AbstractIn this work, we report on observation of Dyakonov plasmons at an interface with a hyperbolic metamaterial in the mid-IR. The hyperbolic metamaterial is implemented as a CMOS-compatible high aspect ratio grating structure with aluminium-doped ZnO (AZO) ridges grown by atomic layer deposition in deep trench silicon matrix. The dispersion of Dyakonov plasmons is characterized by the attenuated total reflection method in the Otto configuration. We demonstrate that Dyakonov plasmons propagate in a broad range of directions (a few tens of degrees) in contrast to the classical Dyakonov surface waves (about one tenth of degree). The obtained results provide useful guidelines for practical implementations of structures supporting Dyakonov plasmons in the mid-IR.

Resumen
A photonic hypercrystal is a subwavelength periodic structure consisting of alternate layers of hyperbolic metamaterial and dielectric material. The structure can be treated as an effective medium as well as a periodic medium. Since two length scales are involved, the better treatment is to treat the hyperbolic metamaterial as an effective medium and the overall structure as a periodic medium. The dispersion relations are derived and plotted to show the appearance of propagating bands and gaps in the frequency and wave vector domains. Then using the transfer matrix approach, the transmissivity versus the frequency plot for propagating waves and grayscale plot of the transmission coefficient in the frequency versus wave vector plane for the evanescent waves are plotted and analyzed.
