A notable proportion of crime is committed in company, particularly during youth, but relatively little attention has been paid to the influence of co-offenders on criminal decision making. This chapter reviews current theory and research on co-offending as it relates to three aspects of offender decision making: the decision to (co)-offend, the selection of accomplices, and choices shaping the characteristics of the criminal event (planning, target selection, and seriousness). Both implicit and explicit decision making are considered, as well as situations in which the offense is premeditated and collaboration is explicitly sought after a plan has been made and situations in which the motivation to offend develops in a group of preformed individuals who become co-offenders by committing the act. The chapter concludes with a discussion of gaps in the current evidence base and directions for future research.

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often diagnosed, and treated for, co-occurring mental health disorders. Co-occurring problems are, in fact, a primary reason for referral and treatment-seeking. Research on comorbidity and its management in youth and adults with ASD has expanded at a rapid rate over the last decade. This is the first comprehensive volume on the topic of co-occurring psychiatric conditions and symptoms in ASD. In this Handbook, internationally recognized clinical scientists synthesize the research on assessment and evidence-based treatment for a broad range of conditions as they present in ASD, from childhood through adulthood. In addition to coverage of formal diagnoses that frequently present in ASD (e.g., mood and anxiety disorders), common behavioural concerns (e.g., psychosexual and sleep problems) are also addressed. Each chapter summarizes the condition or disorder as it presents in ASD, and presents the extant research on its prevalence, developmental course, etiology, and assessment and diagnosis in the context of ASD. Each chapter also includes a summary of evidence-based treatment approaches or current best practices for intervention, as well as a case example to demonstrate application. Chapters are also included to synthesize broader issues related to co-occurring psychiatric conditions in ASD, including a historical overview and conceptual framework for co-occurring conditions in ASD, crisis management, and psychopharmacology. In sum, this handbook is comprehensive compilation of the current evidence-base and recommendations for future research to inform clinical practice related to co-occurring psychiatric conditions and symptoms in ASD.

This chapter deals with Indian ‘innovations for the millions’ (I4M)—new products, processes, and institutional arrangements—that sustainably improve the quality of life of those at the base of the pyramid. Taking ten examples which originated from the private, public, NGO and cooperative sectors, the chapter suggests that these innovations are a response of the ‘elite of calling’ to the Indian paradox – high growth in a large economy, co-existing with a very large number at the base of the pyramid. The chapter argues that a more supportive ecosystem needs to be built to foster I4M, including reforms in regulation and taxation, and attracting bright young people. If that happens Indian I4M can serve billions at the base of the pyramid around the world.

Communication disorders are a common neurodevelopmental disorder. Difficulties are evident with structural language, phonology, and pragmatics. Each area is differentiated within current diagnostic approaches. However, difficulties within the language system often co-occur. The assessment of communication difficulties requires professionals to profile linguistic skills rather than rely on single diagnostic measures. Social communication disorders raise particular challenges in their assessment and their differentiation with other neurodevelopmental disorders. Communication disorders also co-occur, with problems in literacy and behavior highlighting the importance of multiprofessional approaches to assessment and intervention. There is an increasing evidence base for effective interventions that professionals can access to support children’s communication difficulties.

This chapter comprises a focused review of the best available evidence for psychological and pharmacological treatments of choice for anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), and other specified and unspecified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED and UFED), discusses the role of primary care and online therapies, and presents treatment algorithms. In AN, although there is consensus on the need for specialist care that includes nutritional rehabilitation in addition to psychological therapy, no single approach has yet been found to offer a distinct advantage. In contrast, manualized cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for BN has attained “first-line” treatment status with a stronger evidence base than other psychotherapies. Similarly, CBT has a good evidence base in treatment of BED and for BN, and BED has been successfully adapted into less intensive and non-specialist forms. Behavioral and pharmacological weight loss management in treatment of co-morbid obesity/overweight and BED may be helpful in the short term, but long-term maintenance of effects is unclear. Primary care practitioners are in a key role, both with regard to providing care and with coordination and initiation of specialist care. There is an emerging evidence base for online therapies in BN and BED where access to care is delayed or problematic.

Anxiety disorders are highly common in children and adolescents and are associated with significant impairment. This group of disorders includes a broad range of specific diagnoses that often co-occur. Well-established assessment measures exist to facilitate accurate differential diagnosis and characterization of anxiety disorders. Evidence-based treatments also are available. Cognitive behavior therapy has a uniquely broad and robust evidence base, although newer treatments such as attention bias modification training and parent accommodation interventions are the source of growing attention. Current research in the field includes attempts at understanding the basic nature of anxiety disorders, the development of new treatments, and innovative approaches to addressing the key challenge of limited access to treatment.

Antipsychotic medications revolutionized the care of psychosis, but they have brought with them significant side effects and issues around adherence; these latter factors, and informed co-working with patients, are primary drivers for specific medication choices. The data remain limited for polypharmacy and above-maximum dose prescribing, though there may be individuals for whom this is considered. Long-acting injectables (LAIs or ‘depots’) have a good evidence base, and are probably underutilized, though clozapine remains our drug of choice in refractory illness. Forensic-population data show that medications significantly reduce recidivism, including of violent crime. Whilst side effect data are disheartening for both patient and clinician, there are rational management strategies for them all. Novel future therapies being evaluated include acetylcholinergic and glutamatergic enhancers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and the neural peptide oxytocin, to improve negative and cognitive functioning; neuromodulation through rTMS and tDCS are also showing early promise.

• Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death and disability in the world• The evidence base for the causes of CHD and for the interventions which reduce CHD risk is huge• Since CHD is multi-factorial, risk factors tend to co-exist in many patients, and are multiplicative in their influence on overall risk, making identifying people at highest risk clinically difficult• CHD risk scores have been developed, based on observed CHD rates amongst well-phenotyped patient cohorts followed up over years. These express absolute risk over a defined period and are the most practical method for determining which people have the most to gain from treatment interventions• Evidence-based interventions include smoking cessation, lifestyle modification in terms of diet and exercise, anti-hypertensives for elevated blood pressure, and ‘statins’ for hyperlipidaemia• Clinical guidelines for CHD prevention provide recommendations on specific targets for blood pressure and lipid-lowering therapy.

A variety of communication disorders, including problems in hearing, speech, and language, can interfere with a child’s ability to understand and be understood by other people. Communication disorders sometime co-occur with other physical and neurodevelopmental abnormalities, but often their causes are unknown. The most prevalent of the idiopathic communication disorders is child language impairment (LI). LI is defined by significant deficits in understanding (receptive skills) or generating (expressive skills) meaningful linguistic content; it affects 5–8% of children. Best evidence on identifying LI supports a comprehensive multimethod and multisource assessment by a certified speech–language pathologist. With respect to intervention, evidence strongly favors treated over untreated children for expressive language goals; less conclusive evidence is available concerning treatment for receptive language skills. Despite increases in the evidence base, additional population-based and longitudinal investigations are needed concerning the accuracy of predictions and clinical decisions for children with LI.

Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental disorder commencing in early life in which both learning, typically measured with IQ tests, and adaptive functioning are impaired. Prevalence rates of ID vary widely, but converge around 3%. ID is associated with increased rates of all mental disorders but most with other neurodevelopmental disorders; hyperkinetic disorder is estimated to be increased 10-fold in ID, and rates of ADHD have been estimated to be approximately 5%. The full explanation for this association is uncertain, but shared genetic influences play an important role. Co-occurring ID should be considered when undertaking assessments for ADHD. The limited evidence base for treatment of ADHD with ID shows methylphenidate to be effective in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), but the effect sizes are about half those reported for children with average intellectual ability and with higher rates of non-serious adverse effects. No non-pharmacological interventions have been evaluated in RCTs.

Co gallo de se celebrar en 2021 o Ano Santo Compostelán, nesta VI Xornada quixemos achegarnos á onomástica do Camiño de Santiago. As perspectivas de estudo foron diversas: comézase pola Idade Media, na época da consolidación do Camiño, cunha achega sobre os cambios nos significados dos corónimos Galicia e España ao longo da historia e outra sobre o valor da toponimia para a crítica textual (neste caso, na transmisión do Códice Calixtino). Céntranse no propio nome de Santiago as dúas seguintes: unha sobre as súas moitas variantes na antroponimia e na toponimia peninsular e a segunda sobre a súa presenza na toponimia americana. Despois, as acostumadas experiencias didácticas, neste caso dúas con base na toponimia dun tramo do Camiño no concello de Ames. Finalmente, unha mesa redonda sobre o estudo da toponimia no Camiño de Santiago en que se conclúe a oportunidade de celebrar un congreso internacional sobre o tema, como corresponde á condición de Galicia de ser a meta do Camiño e á súa posición de liderado nos estudos toponímicos.

En setembro de 1996, un século despois de que don Marcial Valladares rematase este Nuevo Suplemento al Diccionario Gallego-castellano, dábase a coñecer publicamente. Co suplemento, Valladares pretendía completar o seu dicionario aparecido uns anos antes, que, segundo laudatorias palabras de Carballo Calero “supera ampliamente aos seus predecesores, dos que, naturalmente, se aproveita. O seu Diccionario serve de base a todos os posteriores. É o primeiro diccionario verdadeiramente maduro [...] puxo os fundamentos do estudo da nosa lingua”. A obra lexicográfica de Marcial Valladares segue a pauta propia da lexicografía castelá de finais do século XIX e á vez presenta certas características que o diferencian doutras obras contemporáneas: vocabulario pertencente ao galego vivo, marca do timbre vocálico con precisión e con coherencia, presenza de termos comúns ó castelán, ausencia de afán normativista, profusión de exemplos autorizando o lema, orixe dalgunhas palabras... O labor lexicográfico de Marcial Valladares é realmente encomiable, non só en canto á cantidade (máis de 13.000 voces recollidas) senón tamén canto á calidade: aplicaba criterios na selección léxica e traballaba con escrúpulo e con curiosidade. Dedicoulle á lexicografía unha boa parte da súa vida, ata que a saúde non lle permitiu seguir.

For a long time, jurisprudence believed that it did not have to deal with the relationship between the law and knowledge. Through the clear separation of factual and legal issues, the problem seemed to have been clarified. Tem como as características funcionais representada em grande número de espécies e pode ser medido de duas maneiras – a primeira é a triagem, que envolve medir a característica em várias espécies, e a segunda é o empirismo, que fornece relações quantitativas para as características medidas na triagem. A ecologia funcional muitas vezes enfatiza uma abordagem integrativa, usando traços e atividades do organismo para entender a dinâmica da comunidade e os processos ecossistêmicos, particularmente em resposta às rápidas mudanças globais que ocorrem no ambiente da terra. De modo que, a ecologia funcional está no nexo de várias disciplinas díspares e serve como princípio unificador entre ecologia evolutiva, biologia evolutiva, genética e genômica, e estudos ecológicos tradicionais. Explora áreas como habilidades competitivas entre “espécies, padrões de co-ocorrência de espécies, montagem comunitária e o papel de diferentes características no funcionamento do ecossistema”. A ecologia funcional também auxilia na escolha das espécies com base em suas características, levando em conta as condições ambientais e os potenciais filtros para o desenvolvimento das espécies, bem como as metas propostas para o projeto de restauração.

Resumen
Estimados leitores e estimadas leitoras: A contemporaneidade, em seu bojo de discussões teóricas no campo científico e educacional, traz à tona questionamentos, por exemplo, acerca de as possibilidades de (re)construção da profissionalidade docente sob uma ótica dimensional formativa e humana, numa perspectiva ética, crítico-reflexiva e consciente do respeito aos saberes formativos e interculturais dos estudantes no âmbito educativo escolar. Nesta perspectiva, e tendo como base norteadora a pesquisa (científica) como princípio educativo e (auto)formativo imbricado com a prática docente (DEMO, 19961 ; LÜDKE, 20052 ), cujas tentativas buscam evidenciar as tendências educacionais e inovações pedagógico-metodológicas sobre a didática professoral e o processo formativo docente, a obra científica intitulada FORMAÇÃO DE PROFESSORES E PROFISSÃO DOCENTE NO BRASIL: ASPECTOS HISTÓRICOS, TENDÊNCIAS E INOVAÇÕES apresenta uma coletânea primorosa de artigos acadêmico-científicos, tendo como compromisso ético-profissional possibilitar a todos(as) os(as) leitores(as) conhecer e refletir criticamente sobre o que tem sido produzido atualmente sobre a temática alusiva à formação de professores e profissão docente no Brasil dos dias atuais, bem como acerca dos avanços e retrocessos existentes no âmbito das políticas públicas educacionais concernentes à profissionalidade docente e às inovações e tendências pedagógicas que se intercruzam com o fazer docente nos diferentes espaços educativos formais.
