We discuss three formalisms for the description of Fermions in low-dimensional systems. Then we consider dimensionally hybrid Hamiltonians with mixed three-dimensional and two-dimensional kinetic terms. These Hamiltonians yield particular dimensionally hybrid Green’s functions with interesting prospects for the description of the transition between two-dimensional and three-dimensional behavior of particles in the presence of attractive interface potentials.PACS Nos.: 05.30.Fk, 71.10.Pm, 73.20.–r

Resumen
The emergence of unexpected properties in two-dimensional materials, interfaces, and nanostructured materials opens an exciting framework for exploring new devices and applications. Recent advances in materials design and the nano structurization of novel, low-dimensional materials, surfaces, and interfaces offer a novel playground to design efficient multifunctional materials-based devices. Low-dimensional materials exhibit peculiarities in their electronic, magnetic, and optical properties, changing with respect to the bulk when they are layered down to a single layer, in addition to their high tunability. Their crystal structure and chemical bonds lead to inherent unique mechanical properties. The fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures by stacking materials with different properties, the better control of interfaces, and the tunability of the physical properties by mechanical strain, and chemical and electronic doping allow for the exploration of multifunctional devices with superconducting, magnetic, and optical properties and unprecedented degrees of freedom in terms of fabrication and tunability.

Resumen
In this paper we present a model of impact dynamics in large dimensional systems. We describe a hybrid method, based on graph theory and probability theory, which enables us qualitatively to model the statistics of global dynamics as parameters are varied. Direct numerical simulation reveals a sudden jump from no impacts within the system to many repeated impacts at a critical value of system parameters. We show that a simple model of the most likely number of impacts also possesses a sudden jump and provides good agreement with the numerical results for large impact probability. A refinement of this model improves the agreement at lower impact probability values.

Resumen
The increasing demand in wireless communications for enhanced spectral efficiency (SE) and throughput makes massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) a great choice for meeting those demands by using a vast set of antennas. Despite the advantages of massive MIMO, to implement such systems comes with a huge price tag and consumes a lot of power. Hybrid beamforming (HBF) architecture has drawn considerable attention in the past few years, by significantly decreasing the amount of employed radio frequency (RF) chains and combining high dimensional analog beamforming (ABF) using phase shifters (PS) together with low dimensional digital beamforming (DBF). However, because of the extreme energy consumption and hardware complexity, traditional precoding designs are difficult to implement. In this paper, two HBF techniques are proposed to address the above issue. (i) low complexity precoding known as phased zero forcing (PZF) precoding, which controls phase only in the RF domain (ii) singular value decomposition (SVD) based optimal unconstrained precoding, that can be implemented on inexpensive RF components.

Abstract Vibrating 3-dimensional mechanical systems are described by hybrid graphs. By dividing the hybrid graph into a tree and associated co-tree it is possible to describe in terms of matrices: across-flow-variables, stiffness and flexibility. The application of the formalism of graphs makes it possible to analyze mechanical systems in terms of dynamic characteristic and trajectory motion of determinate points.

Resumen
Abstract Microwave cavity resonators are crucial components of many quantum technologies and are a promising platform for hybrid quantum systems, as their open architecture enables the integration of multiple subsystems inside the cavity volume. To suspend these subsystems within the centre of a cavity where field strengths are strong and uniform, auxiliary support structures are often required, but the effects of these structures on the microwave cavity mode are difficult to predict due to a lack of a priori knowledge of the materials’ response in the microwave regime. Understanding these effects becomes even more important when frequency matching is critical and tuning is limited, for example, when matching microwave modes to atomic resonances for atomic vapour cells inside enclosed microwave cavities. Here, we study the microwave cavity mode in the presence of three commonly-used machinable polymers, paying particular attention to the change in resonance and the dissipation of energy. We demonstrate how to use the derived dielectric coefficient for cavity design in a test case, wherein we match a polymer-filled 3D microwave cavity to a hyperfine transition in rubidium.

Resumen
Although providers and patients may largely agree on what is essential to clinically useful assessment and diagnosis, patients have a unique voice and contribute additional information to our conceptualization of clinical utility. The current study evaluated the clinical utility of three diagnostic models (Section II categorial, Section III hybrid, and the original ICD-11 dimensional) from the consumer/user perspective. Participants included 703 undergraduate students and 154 family members or individuals with borderline personality disorder. Participants rated mock diagnostic reports on six indices of clinical utility. Results indicated that undergraduates favored categorical reports over the original ICD-11 dimensional reports on three of six indices but rated categorical and hybrid reports as essentially equivalent. In the patient/family sample, participants favored the hybrid or categorical model on all indices. Our findings speak to the value of a clear diagnostic label and suggest that future iterations of the DSM adopting a hybrid or dimensional model should have a continued focus on simplicity in communication.

Resumen
Platformers and action-adventure games have high-dimensional state spaces with difficult, non-linear constraints on character movement; even worse, game environments often respond to the player in complex ways that can cause exponential expansion of the planning search space. Planning problems in these high-dimensional spaces generally require domain-specific knowledge and manually abstracted models of game rules to replicate the intuition of human designers or playtesters. In this work, we outline a system for modeling these complex games at a precise and low level in terms of hybrid automata. With this representation, standard incremental search algorithms can be used to answer reachable-region queries, taking advantage of the domain information embedded in the system.

Abstract The mechanism of electron pairing induced by a circularly polarized off-resonant electromagnetic field is suggested and examined theoretically for various two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures. Particularly, it is demonstrated that such a pairing can exist in 2D systems containing charge carriers with different effective masses. As a result of the pairing, the optically induced hybrid Bose-Fermy system appears. The elementary excitation in the system are analyzed and the possible Bose-Einstein condensation of the paired electrons and the related light-induced superconductivity are discussed.

Resumen
Soil station system seismic issues have been highly valued in recent years. In order to investigate the dynamic seismic behaviors of the intermediate column in soil station systems, a hybrid test of a soil station system was conducted. The soil station model was performed with OpenSees. Virtual hybrid simulation was fulfilled with adapter elements. A hybrid model, composed of the steel column specimen and the remainder numerical model, was assembled using the OpenFresco framework. An intermediate column was treated as the physical substructure, while the rest of the soil station system was treated as the numerical substructure in a hybrid simulation. The hybrid test results are compared with the analytical results. The data obtained from such tests show that the system can accurately reflect the mechanical properties of intermediate columns in soil station systems. A hybrid simulation would be a proper way to assess the seismic performance of a soil station system.

In this paper, a new hybrid control strategy is proposed, in which state feedback and parameter perturbation are used to control the bifurcations of continuous dynamical systems. The hybrid control can be applied to any component of a several dimensional dynamical system and is still effective even when the system becomes chaotic. Our results show that various bifurcations, such as Hopf bifurcation and Poincaré bifurcation, can be controlled by means of this method.

Resumen
We show that extraordinary magnetoresistance (EMR) arises in systems consisting of two components; a semiconducting ring with a metallic inclusion embedded. The important aspect of this discovery is that the system must have a quasi-two-dimensional character. Using the same materials and geometries for the samples as in experiments by Solin et al.1,2, we show that such systems indeed exhibit a huge magnetoresistance. The magnetoresistance arises due to the switching of electrical current paths passing through the metallic inclusion. Diagrams illustrating the flow of the current density within the samples are utilised in discussion of the mechanism responsible for the magnetoresistance effect. Extensions are then suggested which may be applicable to the silver chalcogenides. Our theory offers an excellent description and explanation of experiments where a huge magnetoresistance has been discovered2,3.

Resumen
Three-dimensional modelling of biological systems is imperative to study the behaviour of dynamic systems that require the analysis of how their components interact in space. However, there are only a few formal tools that offer a convenient modelling of such systems. The traditional approach to construct and simulate 3D models is to build a system of partial differential equations (PDEs). Although this approach may be computationally efficient and has been employed by many researchers over the years, it is not always intuitive since it does not provide a visual depiction of the modelled systems. Indeed, a visual modelling can help to conceive a mental image which eventually contributes to the understanding of the problem under study. Coloured Hybrid Petri Nets (HPNC) are a high-level representation of classical Petri nets that offer hybrid as well as spatial modelling of biological systems. In addition to their graphical representations, HPNC models are also scalable. This paper shows how HPNC can be used to construct and simulate systems that require three-dimensional as well as hybrid (stochastic/continuous) modelling. We use calcium diffusion in three dimensions to illustrate our main ideas. More specifically, we show that creating 3D models using HPNC can yield more flexible models as the structure can be easily scaled up and down by just modifying a few parameters. This advantage of convenient model configuration facilitates the design of different experiments without the need to alter the model structure.

Resumen
Supercapacitors now play an important role in the progress of hybrid and electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and military and space applications. There is a growing demand in developing hybrid supercapacitor systems to overcome the energy density limitations of the current generation of carbon-based supercapacitors. Here, we demonstrate 3D high-performance hybrid supercapacitors and microsupercapacitors based on graphene and MnO2 by rationally designing the electrode microstructure and combining active materials with electrolytes that operate at high voltages. This results in hybrid electrodes with ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of over 1,100 F/cm3. This corresponds to a specific capacitance of the constituent MnO2 of 1,145 F/g, which is close to the theoretical value of 1,380 F/g. The energy density of the full device varies between 22 and 42 Wh/l depending on the device configuration, which is superior to those of commercially available double-layer supercapacitors, pseudocapacitors, lithium-ion capacitors, and hybrid supercapacitors tested under the same conditions and is comparable to that of lead acid batteries. These hybrid supercapacitors use aqueous electrolytes and are assembled in air without the need for expensive “dry rooms” required for building today’s supercapacitors. Furthermore, we demonstrate a simple technique for the fabrication of supercapacitor arrays for high-voltage applications. These arrays can be integrated with solar cells for efficient energy harvesting and storage systems.

Resumen
A new network data transmission strategy was proposed in [Zhang & Chen, 2005], where the resulting nonlinear system was analyzed and the effectiveness of the transmission strategy was demonstrated via simulations. In this paper, we further generalize the results of Zhang and Chen [2005] in the following ways: (1) Construct first-return maps of the nonlinear systems formulated in [Zhang & Chen, 2005] and derive several existence conditions of periodic orbits and study their properties. (2) Formulate the new system as a hybrid system, which will ease the succeeding analysis. (3) Prove that this type of hybrid systems is not structurally stable based on phase transition which can be applied to higher-dimensional cases effortlessly. (4) Simulate a higher-dimensional model with emphasis on their rich dynamics. (5) Study a class of continuous-time hybrid systems as the counterparts of the discrete-time systems discussed above. (6) Propose new controller design methods based on this network data transmission strategy to improve the performance of each individual system and the whole network. We hope that this research and the problems posed here will rouse the interest of researchers in such fields as control, dynamical systems and numerical analysis.

Resumen
In safety-critical systems, it is desirable to automatically synthesize controllers for complex tasks with guaranteed safety and correctness. Although much progress has been made through controller synthesis from temporal logic specifications, existing approaches generally require conservative assumptions and do not scale well with system dimensionality. We propose a scalable, provably complete algorithm that synthesizes continuous trajectories for hybrid systems to satisfy temporal logic specifications. Specifically, we harness highly efficient Boolean satisfiability (SAT) and Linear Programming (LP) solvers to find trajectories that satisfy non-convex Signal Temporal Logic (STL) specifications for a class of high dimensional hybrid systems. The proposed design algorithms are proven sound and complete, and are validated in simulation experiments.

Resumen
Class imbalance and high dimensionality are two major issues in several real-life applications, e.g., in the fields of bioinformatics, text mining and image classification. However, while both issues have been extensively studied in the machine learning community, they have mostly been treated separately, and little research has been thus far conducted on which approaches might be best suited to deal with datasets that are class-imbalanced and high-dimensional at the same time (i.e., with a large number of features). This work attempts to give a contribution to this challenging research area by studying the effectiveness of hybrid learning strategies that involve the integration of feature selection techniques, to reduce the data dimensionality, with proper methods that cope with the adverse effects of class imbalance (in particular, data balancing and cost-sensitive methods are considered). Extensive experiments have been carried out across datasets from different domains, leveraging a well-known classifier, the Random Forest, which has proven to be effective in high-dimensional spaces and has also been successfully applied to imbalanced tasks. Our results give evidence of the benefits of such a hybrid approach, when compared to using only feature selection or imbalance learning methods alone.

Resumen
Inspired by the formation of hierarchically structured natural biominerals (e.g., bone and tooth), various sequence-defined polymers have been synthesized and exploited for design and synthesis of functional hybrid materials. Here, we synthesized a series of organic-inorganic hybrid peptoids by using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoclusters as side chains at a variety of backbone locations. We further demonstrated the use of these hybrid peptoids as sequence-defined building blocks to assemble a new class of programmable two-dimensional (2D) nanocrystals. They are highly stable and exhibit an enhanced mechanical property and electron scattering due to the incorporated POSS nanoclusters. By varying peptoid side-chain chemistry, we further demonstrated the precise displacement of a large variety of function groups within these 2D nanocrystals and developed a highly efficient aqueous light-harvesting system for live cell imaging. Because these 2D nanocrystals are biocompatible and highly programmable, we expect that they offer unique opportunities for applications.

Resumen
Graphene and related two-dimensional crystals and hybrid systems showcase several key properties that can address emerging energy needs, in particular for the ever growing market of portable and wearable energy conversion and storage devices. Graphene’s flexibility, large surface area, and chemical stability, combined with its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, make it promising as a catalyst in fuel and dye-sensitized solar cells. Chemically functionalized graphene can also improve storage and diffusion of ionic species and electric charge in batteries and supercapacitors. Two-dimensional crystals provide optoelectronic and photocatalytic properties complementing those of graphene, enabling the realization of ultrathin-film photovoltaic devices or systems for hydrogen production. Here, we review the use of graphene and related materials for energy conversion and storage, outlining the roadmap for future applications.

Resumen
Utilizing a modified culture technique for hepatocytes, a high performance suspension culture is possible in which hepatocytes spontaneously form cell aggregates. The aggregates of 20-100 cells have been histologically confirmed to hold a three-dimensional structure, they show a long-term external metabolism and a survival time comparable with standard adhesion cultures. This technique has several advantages in the construction of large scale bioreactors for hybrid liver support systems.

Resumen
We introduce a data-driven forecasting method for high-dimensional chaotic systems using long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks. The proposed LSTM neural networks perform inference of high-dimensional dynamical systems in their reduced order space and are shown to be an effective set of nonlinear approximators of their attractor. We demonstrate the forecasting performance of the LSTM and compare it with Gaussian processes (GPs) in time series obtained from the Lorenz 96 system, the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation and a prototype climate model. The LSTM networks outperform the GPs in short-term forecasting accuracy in all applications considered. A hybrid architecture, extending the LSTM with a mean stochastic model (MSM–LSTM), is proposed to ensure convergence to the invariant measure. This novel hybrid method is fully data-driven and extends the forecasting capabilities of LSTM networks.
