West Nile virus (WNV) threatens the health of humans and equines worldwide. Culex (Cx.) pipiens complex mosquitoes are major vectors but numerous other species have been implicated. Due to variations in blood-feeding behaviour, Cx. pipiens biotypes and hybrids influence transmission, from enzootic cycles (between mosquitoes and birds), to spill-over transmission to humans and equines. In this study, mosquitoes were collected in May–June 2018 during the early period of the transmission season from two regional units of Greece, where WNV cases had been reported in the previous four years (Palaio Faliro and Argolida). A total of 1062 mosquitoes were collected with Biogents Sentinel 2 traps collecting both a greater number of all mosquito species and the Cx. pipiens complex than CDC miniature light traps or Heavy Duty EVS traps. Molecular identification confirmed additional species including Aedes albopictus. The proportion of Cx. pipiens biotypes in Palaio Faliro was 54.5% pipiens, 20.0% molestus and 25.5% hybrids. In Argolida, the collection comprised 68.1% pipiens biotype, 8.3% molestus biotype and 23.6% hybrids. Screening resulted in WNV detection in three females of the pipiens biotype and in one hybrid. As hybrids play a role in spill-over transmission, these findings highlight the importance of entomological surveillance programs incorporating molecular xenomonitoring as an early warning before human cases at the onset of the transmission season.

Resumen
The water frogs of western Tuscany (Italy) belong to the L-E hybridogenetic system, and comprise one parental species and its hybrid. A stringent morphological approach for discriminating the Italian hybrids from non-hybrids has yet to be established. In this work, using the molecular marker RrS1, we have determined the hybrid versus non-hybrid status of 43 water frogs collected from two sampling sites (“Fiume Morto Vecchio” and “Padule di Bientina”). At “Fiume Morto Vecchio” we determined 25 non-hybrids and nine hybrids and in “Padule di Bientina” we determined eight hybrids and one non-hybrid individual. All individuals of these two frog populations were analyzed morphologically. We used the derived residuals from regression analysis of all normally distributed morphological parameters on callus internus length (snout to vent length, tibia length, head width, distance nostril eye, first toe length and body mass) to build sex independent variables in discriminant analysis providing a valid contribution to morphologically distinguish hybrids from non-hybrid green frogs in Italy.

Resumen
Abstract We use 13 color characters to describe the first known Dendroica nigrescens × D. occidentalis hybrid. Because this specimen was collected in the southeastern Cascade Mountains of Washington during the breeding season, D. townsendi, D. occidentalis, and D. nigrescens are the only plausible parents for a hybrid male falling within the black-throated clade of Dendroica warblers. Multiple character states in the hybrid refute the alternative parental combinations, townsendi × occidentalis and townsendi × nigrescens. Two characteristics of this hybrid suggested further tests of the parentage of 38 problematic hybrids that were treated previously as townsendi × occidentalis recombinants by assumption only. These hybrids lack yellow on their breast, the only character that refutes a nigrescens × occidentalis parentage. The new hybrid is intermediate between nigrescens and occidentalis in the color of its posterior face and its anterior crown; thus, we scored these new characters in the 38 problematic hybrids. None of these 38 specimens was intermediate or white in either of these regions, and there was no correlation between having tinges of white in these regions and the extent of flank streaking. These results fail to support nigrescens in the parentage of these 38 specimens; furthermore, none of the problematic hybrids carried a nigrescens mitochondrial DNA haplotype. Thus, we conclude that all are unusual recombinants of townsendi × occidentalis hybridization, rather than nigrescens × occidentalis hybrids.

Resumen
Relevance. The aim of the research was to determine the physiological characteristics of the manifestation of resistance to stress factors (drought) of new hybrid forms of domestic plum and the allocation of the most drought-resistant in the environmental conditions of southern gardening.Methods. The article presents the results of drought tolerance studies of six promising hybrid forms of home plum (17–1-55, 17–1-69, 17–2-64, 17–2-78, 17–2-81, 17–3-79), concentrated in the genetic collection of SKFNTSVV. The main indicators characterizing the varieties and hybrids of home plum were determined as drought tolerant — the water content of the leaves and the water holding capacity of the leaves under conditions of summer moisture deficiency.Results. The water content of leaf tissue of hybrid forms in the hottest period (second — third decade of July) was heterogeneous. The highest water content in tissues was observed in hybrid seedlings 17–2-64 (63.1%) and 17–2-81 (59.6%). The smallest value was observed in the hybrid 17–3-79 and amounted to 49.7%. According to the data obtained, it was concluded that the studied hybrid forms do not differ in high water content, with the exception of hybrid 17–2-64, in which the water content can be characterized as above average. It was found that the water retention capacity of most hybrid forms is average. The total water content after withering in the studied hybrids was more than 80%. The greatest decrease in the amount of water in the leaves was observed in hybrids 17–1-55 (18.9%), 17–2-64 (18.5%), 17–3-79 (18.4%); the smallest — in hybrids 17–1-69 (13.3%), 17–2-78 (13.6%), which indicates a highwater retention capacity of the last two hybrids. With a general assessment of the hybrid fund of home plum, it was found that most hybrids studied have low hydration of leaf tissue and average water retention capacity. Based on this, two drought-resistant hybrid forms were identified: 17–1-69 and 17–2-78, which, despite the low water content, are distinguished by good water-holding ability in comparison with other hybrids and, as a consequence, the conservation of leaf turgor.

Resumen
The results of research on common Chernozem in the grain crop rotation to identify the effectiveness of cultivating varieties and hybrids according to the traditional production system of sunflower are presented. Under weather conditions at the level and worse than the average annual values, on average for 2017-2019, when testing 11 varieties and hybrids of domestic (3 varieties and 4 hybrids) and foreign selection (4 hybrids), the highest yield of oilseeds was established on hybrids of domestic (Legion, Fanat) – 2.13-2.19 t/ha and foreign selection (Sharks, NSH-6013) – 2.20-2.29 t/ha. The most stable fat content in oil seeds were hybrids 8N358KLDM and Everest, which provided an average of three years of fat production at the level of 51.9-52.7 %, for the highest oil collection per unit area hybrids Fanat, Sharks – 0.99-1.00 t / ha, the maximum net income hybrids Fanat, Sharks and NSX-6013 – 33086,8-35268,8 RUB / ha. The low cost of seeds in the varieties Precocious 87, Saratov 20, Nut, hybrid Fanat contributed to the highest cost recovery – 4.19-4.45 rubles / RUB of costs. Based on the research carried out when cultivating sunflower according to the traditional production system in the Volga region, it is recommended to use a hybrid of domestic selection – Fanat to obtain a high net income. In order to get the maximum return on costs, it is proposed to cultivate early-maturing varieties of Precocious 87, Saratov 20, Nut, and hybrid Fanat.

No matter the scale of observation, biological systems ranging from molecules to cells, and multicellular organisms to communities, manifest collective behaviours. Many explanatory ideas have been put forward based on local perception. In each of these cases progress has been possible because the collective-level phenotype is obvious and observable to the naked eye, but also because of the objective function targeted in the understanding of these behaviours. Here I constructed a machine-ecosystem hybrid that involve an observation device, coupled to a light landscape generator in an automated loop that contain a learning process at every step based on data captured from the ecosystem being observed. In order to break the reality gap between modelisation and reality, taking into account the deep complexity of the studied system as the modelisation can then co evolve with the observed matter, that is reactive toward the adaptive landscape that interact with it, and then reach unexplored and not experimentally implementable fields of heuristic. My project involves several stages. Construction of the hybrid. Application and development interaction algorithms. Establishment of simple microbial populations that can be sustained and whose behaviour can be manipulated via the machine. Experiments to demonstrate proof of principle

Resumen
Thesis (MEng) -- Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Water collection systems are used in wet-cooling towers (WCTs) with fill over which water to be cooled flows and in evaporative air-cooled heat exchangers (EACHEs) having deluged tube bundles over which water flows to transfer heat from the tubes. They collect and remove water falling from the bottom of the fill or heat exchanger tube bundle while allowing air to pass with limited flow resistance. There are basically two types of collection systems, categorized as trough and basin systems. Trough systems comprise of multiple, evenly spaced parallel troughs extended in one direction with inclined capture plates to direct water into the troughs. The water collects in the troughs and drains under gravity to a collecting tank or manifold from where it is pumped to the sprayers. In basin systems water falls directly into an open basin under gravity where it is collected and can be pumped to the sprayers. The hybrid (dry/wet) dephlegmator (HDWD) for air-cooled steam condensers, which is being developed at Stellenbosch University as discussed by Heyns (2008), Owen (2013) and Anderson (2014), requires a more effective water collection system with a lower pressure drop than what current designs have to offer. In this thesis, an existing trough system is systematically evaluated by means of various high speed camera and flow experiments to determine its performance characteristics and to find ways to improve its catchment effectiveness. A modification is proposed which increases the effectiveness from approximately 92% to 100 % with a relatively small increase in pressure drop, by adding a small deflector plate and reducing the spacing between adjacent troughs. Experimental data and CFD models are used to determine the performance characteristics of the modified trough system for design purposes. For comparison, various basin system designs are proposed and investigated using CFD, where the baseline model is validated by means of experimental data of rectangular cooling tower inlets by Kröger (2004). Rectangular cooling tower inlets are relevant as they have a similar re-circulating flow pattern to what is seen with the water basin inlets at the vicinity of the inlet wall. The numerical data is correlated to determine empirical relations for the flow performance characteristics. The comparison between the modified trough and the different basin systems yields that the trough system requires significantly less fan and pumping power than basin systems and the costs are also expected to be less.

This thesis proposes research of novel hybrid photonic signal processing systems in the areas of optical communications, test and measurement, RF signal processing and extreme environment optical sensors. It will be shown that use of innovative hybrid techniques allows design of photonic signal processing systems with superior performance parameters and enhanced capabilities. These applications can be divided into domains of analog-digital hybrid signal processing applications and free-space--fiber-coupled hybrid optical sensors. The analog-digital hybrid signal processing applications include a high-performance analog-digital hybrid MEMS variable optical attenuator that can simultaneously provide high dynamic range as well as high resolution attenuation controls; an analog-digital hybrid MEMS beam profiler that allows high-power watt-level laser beam profiling and also provides both submicron-level high resolution and wide area profiling coverage; and all optical transversal RF filters that operate on the principle of broadband optical spectral control using MEMS and/or Acousto-Optic tunable Filters (AOTF) devices which can provide continuous, digital or hybrid signal time delay and weight selection. The hybrid optical sensors presented in the thesis are extreme environment pressure sensors and dual temperature-pressure sensors. The sensors employ hybrid free-space and fiber-coupled techniques for remotely monitoring a system under simultaneous extremely high temperatures and pressures.

Resumen
The energy sector is currently in a state of change as conventional energy sources are questioned by the need of new clean and sustainable energy sources to satisfy the global energy demand in the long term. Renewable energies respond to this increasing demand and solar energy is an advanced example of them. Photovoltaic modules are experiencing a steady reduction in their production costs. It is needed that this trend continues and, along with it, their propagation and expansion in the market continues. One way of reducing production costs is by using inexpensive light concentrators to increase the output of the costly photovoltaic cell. In this respect, the Solarus AB hybrid PV/T collector has been designed based on this principle. This collector is a CPC (Compound Parabolic Collector) and belongs to the MaReCo (Maximum Reflector Collector) family. The aim of this thesis is to deeply investigate this technology in two main areas. Firstly, the collector will be tested both electrically and thermally in order to evaluate its performance. To do so, a solar test rig has been built and connected at the building Hall 45 of Högskolan i Gävle, Gävle, Sweden. The second main area of investigation of this thesis is to determine the optimal price for the Solarus AB hybrid PV/T collector in order to be competitive in the solar energy market. This study will be based in the current market prices of photovoltaic and thermal collectors. Regarding the electrical performance of the collector, the results obtained show that the front side of the receiver produces more electricity throughout the day than the reflector side. This has guided Solarus AB to decide to change the design of its receiver to improve its performance. With the current design, it has been obtained a peak power at STC of 220W. In relation with the thermal part, the heat losses of the collector have been estimated obtaining a U value of 6,8W/(m2*K), a thermal optical beam efficiency of 63,5% and a total optical beam efficiency of 74,5%. The price market study of photovoltaic and thermal collector has shown that 2m2 of the Solarus AB hybrid PV/T collector produces approximately the same annual electricity and heat as 1,1m2 of a photovoltaic module with an efficiency of 15,5% and a flat plate collector of 0,85m2 of aperture area. According to the market study, its cost is equivalent to 190€ for the PV module and 220€ for the flat plate collector. This means that the price of the Solarus AB hybrid PV/T collector should be lower than 410€.

In the context of greenhouse gas emissions and fossil and fissile resources depletion, solar energy is one of the most promising sources of power. The building sector is one of the biggest energy consumers after the transport and industrial sectors. Therefore, making use of a building’s envelope (façades and roofs) as solar collecting surfaces is a big challenge facing local building needs, specifically in regard to heat, electricity and cooling. However, available surfaces of a building with suitable orientation are always limited, and in many cases a conflict occurs between their use for either heat or electricity production. This is one of the reasons why the concept of a hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) collector seems promising. PV-T collectors are multi-energy components that convert solar energy into both electricity and heat. In fact, PV-T collectors make possible the use of the large amount of solar radiation wasted in PV modules as usable heat in a conventional thermal system. Therefore, PV-T collectors represent in principle one of the most efficient ways to use solar energy (co-generation effect). However, such a concept still faces various barriers due to the multidisciplinary knowledge requirements (material, semi-conductors, thermal) and to the complexity of the multiple physical phenomena implied in such concepts. The objective of this PhD work is to carry out a study based on a multi-scale approach that combines both numerical and experimental investigations regarding the feasibility of the concept of hybrid solar collector. The performance of such components is estimated through an appropriate design analysis, and innovative solutions to design an efficient PV-T collector are presented. Based on improved processing methods and improved material properties, an efficient covered PV-T collector has been designed and tested. This collector was made of PV cells connected to the surface of an optimized flat heat exchanger by an improved lamination process and covered on the front side by a static air layer and AR-coated glass pane and on the back side by thermal insulation material. The results showed a significant improvement of both thermal and electrical efficiency in comparison to all previous works on PV-T concepts found in the literature. System simulations were carried out for a hot water system with the software TRNSYS in order to get a clearer statement on the performance of PV-T collectors. The results show that the integration of PV-T collectors can be more advantageous than standard solar components in regard to thermodynamic considerations (energy and exergy) and environmental considerations (CO2 and primary energy saving)

Gkatzioura, Anna. "A hybrid approach for item collection recommendations : an application to automatic playlist continuation". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/664040.

Texto completo
Resumen
Current recommender systems aim mainly to generate accurate item recommendations, without properly evaluating the multiple dimensions of the recommendation problem. However, in many domains, like in music, where items are rarely consumed in isolation, users would rather need a set of items, designed to work well together, while having some cognitive properties as a whole, related to their perception of quality and satisfaction. In this thesis, a hybrid case-based recommendation approach for item collections is proposed. In particular, an application to automatic playlist continuation, addressing similar cognitive concepts, rather than similar users, is presented. Playlists, that are sets of music items designed to be consumed as a sequence, with a specific purpose and within a specific context, are treated as cases. The proposed recommender system is based on a meta-level hybridization. First, Latent Dirichlet Allocation is applied to the set of past playlists, described as distributions over music styles, to identify their underlying concepts. Then, for a started playlist, its semantic characteristics, like its latent concept and the styles of the included items, are inferred, and Case-Based Reasoning is applied to the set of past playlists addressing the same concept, to construct and recommend a relevant playlist continuation. A graph-based item model is used to overcome the semantic gap between songs’ signal-based descriptions and users’ high-level preferences, efficiently capture the playlists’ structures and the similarity of the music items in those. As the proposed method bases its reasoning on previous playlists, it does not require the construction of complex user profiles to generate accurate recommendations. Furthermore, apart from relevance, support to parameters beyond accuracy, like increased coherence or support to diverse items is provided to deliver a more complete user experience. Experiments on real music datasets have revealed improved results, compared to other state of the art techniques, while achieving a “good trade-off” between recommendations’ relevance, diversity and coherence. Finally, although actually focusing on playlist continuations, the designed approach could be easily adapted to serve other recommendation domains with similar characteristics.

A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a collection of spatially distributed autonomous sensor nodes that can be used to monitor, among other things, environmental conditions. WSN nodes are constrained by their limited energy supply, communication range and local computational capabilities. Data routing is an area that can be optimized to allow nodes to conserve energy, improving the network?s overall lifetime. Though many routing protocols can be used, using a clustering protocol can play an important role in conserving WSN energy. A new hybrid algorithm is proposed which incorporates both distributed and centralized algorithms for selection of the cluster head (CH). In most networks, sensor nodes have limited energy, so a mobile data collector (MDC) is used to collect information, reducing energy requirements. The performance of proposed algorithm is evaluated using NS-2 simulations. The results show that proposed algorithm has better performance, throughput, network lifetime compared to existing routing protocols.

Resumen
Drawing on a rich array of textual and visual primary sources, including medicine, satires, play scripts, dictionaries, natural philosophy, and texts on collecting wonders, this book provides a fresh perspective on monstrosity in early modern European culture. The essays explore how exceptional bodies challenged social, religious, sexual and natural structures and hierarchies in the sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and contributed to its knowledge, moral and emotional repertoire. Prodigious births, maternal imagination, hermaphrodites, collections of extraordinary things, powerful women, disabilities, controversial exercise, shapeshifting phenomena and hybrids are examined in a period before all varieties and differences became normalized to a homogenous standard. The historicizing of exceptional bodies is central in the volume since it expands our understanding of early modern culture and deepens our knowledge of its specific ways of conceptualizing singularities, rare examples, paradoxes, rules and conventions in nature and society.

Resumen
Recently, public policies of urban regeneration have intensified and multiplied. They are being promoted with the aim to start social and economic dynamics within the local context which is subject to intervention. From the empirical analysis, we realise that such activities are mainly implemented by three subjects or by mixed coalitions (public institutions, actors of the third sector and companies). Within them, each player is moved by a multiplicity of interests and goals that go beyond their own nature – public interest, market and mutualism – and tend to redefine themselves, thus becoming hybrid forms of production of value (social, economic, cultural). By studying a number Italian and Catalan cases, this essay deals with the theory that, under specific conditions and configurations, a collaborative direction – of organization, production and design – would give life to successful procedures, even without the identification of a one-best-way. The collaboration is not simply a choice of operation, but a real production method which mobilises social resources to create hybrid solutions – between state, market and society – to complex issues that could not be faced solely with the use of the rationale of action of one among the three actors. In this framework, the systems of relations and interactions between players and shared capital become an essential condition for the success of every initiative of urban redevelopment, or failure thereof. Such initiatives are brought to life by the strategic role of individuals who foster connections as well as the dissemination of non-redundant information between social networks, and collective and individual actors which would otherwise be separated and barely able to communicate and collaborate with each other. In addition to the functions carried out by knowledge brokers, that have been extensively described in organisational studies and economic sociology, the aforementioned figures act as real social enzymes, that is to say, they handle the available information and function as catalysts of social processes of production of knowledge. Moreover, they increase the reaction speed, working on mechanisms which control the spontaneity.

Resumen
This volume collects prominent voices in the debate on transdisciplinarity in a transdisciplinary manner. Its coincidence of content and form in presenting main papers and critical replies to them from a different discipline allows for a vivid discussion and new insights. These stylistically and thematically divergent contributions are linked by reservations about transdisciplinarity as an allround intellectual weapon and the conviction that its programmatic weight could be regained by approaching the subject from the margins—transdisciplinarity where it breaks down, fails, comes to an end. Unravelling transdisciplinarity’s contours by clarifying its limits.

Resumen
While it is common to talk about an “organizational identity,” since its first formal conceptualization over 30 years ago, scholars have suggested that an organization may have more than one collective answer to the question “who are we?” I review two major conceptualizations of organizational identity plurality that have developed in the past few decades: (1) hybrid and (2) multiple organizational identities. Specifically, I summarize the major theoretical and empirical research in each of these conceptualizations, delineate the major differences between them, and discuss potential avenues for future research. I conclude the chapter with a discussion of whether and how unified conceptualizations of “who we are” as an organization can exist alongside organizational identity plurality.

Resumen
This chapter provides an introduction to study design, data collection, and analysis in implementation science. Although the randomized controlled trial is frequently employed in implementation science, a number of alternatives are relied on for addressing the unique challenges present. Alternatives include the cluster randomized control trial, roll-out designs such as the stepped wedge, cumulative trial, and effectiveness–implementation hybrid designs. Data collection and data analytic techniques must also address the unique challenges present in implementation science. Often, implementation occurs over time, often, across complex, multilevel contexts. Implementation scientists frequently utilize mixed, qualitative, and quantitative methodologies for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. Data represent the outer context of service systems and the inner context of organizations such that the data are often nested and hierarchical in nature. This chapter highlights the previously mentioned topics, particularly as they relate to currently funded implementation studies focused on the cancer control continuum.

Resumen
Hybrid solar lighting (HSL) has been successfully demonstrated as a means of collecting sunlight and transferring it through optical fibers into a building. The collected solar energy is primarily intended for illumination purposes. However, this technology may have an application in solar water heating. For a traditional solar water heating system, energy is required to pump the water to the roof and collected solar energy is lost to the environment through the collector and plumbing. If such a system is to be used in climates where the temperature falls below freezing, complexity is added resulting in lower system efficiencies. If, rather than pumping water to the roof to absorb solar energy, the solar radiation is “piped” into the hot water store, a solar water heating system may be much less complex and potentially more efficient. HSL technology can be used to collect solar radiation and transport it through optical fibers into a hot water store. Since the water remains in the tank, it is not exposed to freezing temperatures and heat loss through plumbing. The efficiency of the system would not be dependent on the outside temperature or the temperature of the water as traditional systems are, but solely on the efficiency in which solar radiation is transferred into the water. This paper will outline the major advantages of using HSL technology for solar water heating over traditional systems. The approximate efficiencies of a flat-plate collector, 2-axis solar tracking collector, and a system using HSL technology are compared using F-Chart for locations in the Southwestern and Northeastern United States. It is shown that improvements in efficiency are obtained using HSL technology if the system is capable of collecting and transferring the visible and infrared spectrum of solar radiation.

Resumen
A hybrid solar water collection system was designed to determine the benefits of combining a flat plate collector with evacuated tubes. The system used a flat plate collector with five evacuated tubes to maximize solar absorption from direct and diffuse solar radiation. The performance of the hybrid collector was evaluated by collecting data while the system operated at a range of flow rates and solar insolation levels over several months. The maximum change in temperature was 48.6°C with a flow rate of 0.0063 kg/s. Analysis of the data quantified the maximum change in temperature and a range of maximum system efficiency between 40–45%.

Resumen
The commonly used methods to harness solar energy are solar thermal and solar photovoltaic (PV). A new category photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) hybrid combines these two technologies, and achieves higher combined efficiency. The challenge is to keep the operating temperature of the PV low and at the same time not compromise on the temperature of the thermal cycle. Various designs of PV/T hybrids (both flat plate and concentrated) have already been proposed which utilize air or water to remove the heat from PV cells in order to enhance the overall efficiency of PV/T hybrid collector. Recent papers have showed that nanofluids can be used as an optical filter to filter the required wavelength range (equivalent to the band gap of the PV cell) from solar spectra. Thus, the heating of PV cells can be significantly reduced and higher overall efficiencies can be achieved using selective absorption by nanofluids. In this study, a new design of a PV/T hybrid collector was proposed and two nanofluid filters that can be used with Silicon (Si) PV cells were identified and corresponding thermal and overall efficiencies of PV/T hybrid collector were calculated.
