This work aims to find the restricted terror literature field in Brazil; for this, we analyzed the horror effects present in three tales of the author Amândio Sobral: O homem que matou um morto, A estranha cavalgada de Ivan Palinskyand A podridão viva, these stories present in the work Contos Exóticos, published in 1934. For the realization such intent, the dissertation is divided into four chapters. In the first, Tale: a genre that says a lot in a few words, we analyze the theories of the story in order to point out the main characteristics of this genre. We rely here on considerations made by theorists such as Julio Cortazar, Ricardo Piglia and Edgar Allan Poe. In the second chapter, horror aesthetic variations, we analyze the fantastic genre and its relationship with the unusual, gothic, horror, the grotesque and the sublime. For this we use the theories of Marcelo Briseno Marques de Melo, Maurício Cesar Menon, Wolfgang Kayser, Tzvetan Todorov and Lainister de Oliveira Esteves. The third chapter, Amândio Sobral: a seemingly text out of context, in turn, has the purposeof presenting the author and his context and point out some of its predecessors literary influences regarding the use of the horror and the fantastic in literature Brazil, using this aspect, the reflections of Antonio Candido, Alfredo Bosi, Randal Johnsonand Luis Bueno. At last, Suspense, fear and horror: the tales of Amândio Sobral, we present the analysis of the works and the strategies employed by the author to generate the horror effect and fear in his short stories, using, for this, the H.P. Lovecraft considerations, Alcides Ribeiro, Gaston Bachelard and Benedito Nunes
Lovecraft, Alcídes Ribeiro, Gaston Bachelard e Benedito Nunes

In my thesis I argue that the return of the religious in contemporary culture has been in two forms the rise of so-called fundamentalisms in the established faiths-Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, even Buddhist-and the rise of a New Age style spirituality that draws from aspects of those faiths even as it produces something distinctively different. I argue that this shift both produces post-modern media culture, and is itself always-already mediated through the realm of the fictional. Secular and profane are always entangled within one another, a constant and pervasive media presence that modulates the way that contemporary subjects experience themselves and their relationship to the spiritual. I use popular culture as an entry point, an entry point that can presume neither belief nor unbelief in its audiences, showing that it is 'unreal' texts such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Matrix and so on that we find religious symbols and ideas refracted through a postmodernist sensibility, with little regard for the demands of 'real world' epistemology. I argue that it is in this interplay between traditional religions and New Age-ised spirituality in popular culture that the sacred truly finds itself in postmodernity.

Resumen
The appearance of the ghostly is generally described as a manifestation, and to perceive the ghostly is predicated on the act of seeing. To be manifest is to be apparent, clear, evident and obvious and a manifestation is an act of revelation, even one of proof. The genre of the ghostly however is rarely truly seen in critical works, and the aim of this thesis is to engage with and explore the implications raised by the act of seeing within the tradition of the British ghost story. The appearance of the ghostly not only requires the acknowledgement of the existence of ‘the other’ by witnesses, but also actively prompts the viewer to see all that surrounds them in a wholly new way. With the focus firmly on the issue of seeing, this thesis seeks to examine to what extent the ghost story offers a different, and challenging, view of the rational world, and whether the ghost story is more than just an entertaining popular diversion and can actually, as Kenneth Womack suggests, operate as “a mechanism for social critique."

Resumen
Vampire and Vampirism have raised the interests of the public from 1700s. Vampire is being used as a lens to discuss social issues in the real world. However, it is seen that there are limited works discussing the situation of coloured communities. This project is to examine female vampire figures in select works and evaluate the extent to which those figures are able to represent an empowered image of women of colour. To achieve this aim, textual analysis will be used to examine classical vampire literature, such as Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla" (1872/2003), Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's "Luella Miller" (1902/2014), Bram Stoker's Dracula (2007), Anne O'Brien Rice's Interview with the Vampire (1976/2010) and L. A. Banks's Minion (2003). There will be interdisciplinary reading of the social situation and behavior of the colored alongside with textual analysis of Jewelle Gomez's The Gilda Stories: A Novel (1991) and Octavia E. Butler's Fledgling: A Novel (2005). I will conclude that vampire literature has the ability and potentiality to reflect social behavior and environment of the coloured, especially coloured women. The contribution of this thesis is to demonstrate that reflecting the situation of the coloured can be a new area for vampire literature to explore in the future development and evolution of vampire literature as a genre. This is also breakthrough to the function of vampire literature as a genre because on top of appearing as entertainment and reflection of society, vampire literature is able to serve social function to empower and enlighten readers by raising their awareness to social issues that people are used to neglect.

Resumen
This collection of short stories studies the elements of genre fiction and applies them to literary fiction. Science fiction, fantasy, and horror have specific manners in which they speak to an audience. By using these elements, for example the desensitization of the current generation of readers to most horrors, an author can demonstrate the core of the human relationship to pain, faith, or hope. Though some genre fiction seems to fit certain formulas, there are also horror or science fiction stories which do not fit a conventional mold. This collection sets forth to break away from genre fiction conventions. Also, this project utilizes the genre of magical realism, which is the medium between genre fiction and literary fiction, by using fantastic events within a mundane setting to emphasize the author's ideas. By bridging the gap between genres, magical realism reveals how interrelated the elements of all genres are. In this study stories use magical and horrifying events while maintaining an intention beyond the formulaic thrill. Therefore, genre fiction can have a place amongst literature.

Resumen

This dissertation deals with how didactic fiction and writers of child literature of the 18th and 19th centuries tried to strike terror into their young listeners to make them obedient to the social and moral norms of adults. Particular attention is devoted to texts where children themselves function as protagonists. Fairy-tales by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm but also by Ludwig Bechstein and Charles Perrault are taken into consideration as are examples of child literature by Johann Baptist Strobl, a less famous didactic philanthropist at the end of the Enlightenment.

The theme of horror and intimidation is followed and analyzed with special regard to narrative techniques, but also to objectives of educational and socialisation processes. The dissertation argues that many of the recurring stereotypes and topoi in these horror stories for children can be traced back to popular superstition and other notions of an early preliterary and oral society.

Resumen
Through the lens of the horror film and the fairy tale, this thesis explores the notion of the grotesque as a boundary phenomenon—a negotiation of what is self and what is other. As such, it locates the function that the monstrous and the grotesque have in the formation of a personal and social identity. In asking why we take pleasure in the perverse, I explore how permutations of guilt, victimhood, and desire can be actively rewritten, in order to construct a stable sense of self.

Texto completo
Resumen
In House of Leaves, Mark Z. Danielewski has produced a text which epitomises the traits and concerns of postmodernist literature. Through his attention to aspects such as metafiction, intertextuality and parody, Danielewski develops a narrative structure which is best understood as a literary labyrinth. It is a structure intended to reflect the social conditions of the twenty-first century and comment on the experience of people living at this time. Some of the meaning-making strategies within the book’s labyrinthine structure are thus discussed in detail in order to demonstrate the relevance and importance of House of Leaves as social commentary. House of Leaves is an exemplary postmodernist text, but it is also one that seeks to guide the reader beyond the intellectual impasse of the postmodernist paradigm toward a renewed ethical and political engagement with the world. One of the most important goals of both Danielewski’s novel and this thesis is to attempt to redefine the postmodernist perspective in such a way as to insist on the necessity of what I call a new realism. This is founded upon an awareness of the pervasiveness of the self-perpetuating ideology of capitalism, even in the perspective of postmodernism (which purports to subvert all authoritative ideologies). Playing a crucial role in perpetuating the status quo of capitalism is the growth of entertainment culture, which works to sideline crucial political issues by replacing information with infotainment. The result is an intensification of the processes of commodification. Such an intensification, it is argued, may be countered by a radical scepticism which draws upon the methods and insights of contemporary science.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis contains the results of an investigation into the elements of the horror story and the Gothic novel in three contemporary works. The investigation was conducted within the theoretical framework of the original historical Gothic novel of the eighteenth century, in comparison with contemporary theorization on the Gothic, with specific reference to the study of Eddy Bertin, and to some extent Hendrik van Gorp and Fred Botting. Four conventions of the Gothic genre were identified, and were applied to an Afrikaans novel and drama, as well as a Dutch novel, to establish to which extent the Gothic manifests itself in these contemporary texts. The study focussed on The night only has one eye (1991) by Francois Bloemhof, Crossing/ Passion (1994) by Reza de Wet and A heart of stone (1999) by Renate Dorrestein. From these texts, which were read within a Gothic framework, it could be deduced that there is a deviation from the conventional Gothic texts within both the Afrikaans and the Dutch texts. This deviation especially occurs with regard to characterization, with specific reference to the female character. The authors use the traditional Gothic characters as a point of departure, but bring about renewal in the texts by making them part of a wider philosophical field. The portrayal of the themes of good versus evil, space and tension, also shows a deviation from the Gothic conventions. An important finding in this study is that the Gothic genre in its pure form can not successfully be traced in contemporary literature. The three texts under discussion show the occurrence of allogamy between the different sub-categories of horror. A further important conclusion is that these three texts cannot be merely categorized as Popular literature because of the renewal it brings regarding the traditional Gothic conventions.

Dr. Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it.

By means of a Lacanian reading, this thesis aims to illustrate that Poe’s horror tales parallel his theory of beauty. Most of his horror tales are characterized by a lack of the external world, violations of the law, and/or a doubling relationship with others. In psychoanalytic terms, the external world, the law, and the others play a crucial role for a child to be a desiring subject, and they are subsumed by Lacan in his notion of the Symbolic. The Symbolic is constituted by the Name-of-the-Father/nom du père, that is, the incest taboo in Freudian terms. That is to say, Poe’s tales present a world where the Symbolic is either absent or falling. Under such a condition, the characters, thrust by the death drive, head for destruction of others and/or self-destruction. On the other hand, in his theory of beauty, Poe proposes the existence of an immortal human instinct for beauty. This instinct, implied in the texts, is one which desires for self-torture. Meanwhile, through a close reading of Poe’s theory and works and a comparison between Poesque beauty with traditional ones, mainly Burke’s and Kant’s, we find that Poesque beauty, defined as an effect, is the perceptual or sensational effect. While an artist pursues Poesque beauty, he or she is looking for the sensational effect produced by self-torturing; he or she is heading for his or her self-destruction. Thus, Poe’s horror tales and his theory of beauty echo each other, and both embody the death drive. While Lacan suggests in his Seminar VII that the death drive may initiate the subject into “creation ex nihilo” or the Symbolic into its reform as shown by Antigone’s case, the death drive manifested in Poe’s tales and theory leads one no more than self-destruction.

Resumen
Folk Horror, as a subgenre of Horror, has been revived in recent years. The films reflect the societal and political concerns of the time in which they were made, while retaining connections to specific folktales and their structures. This thesis will consider the significance of the relationship between Folk Horror and specific folktale narratives and structures, applied a folktale lens to contemporary examples of Folk Horror. The films examined are Robert Eggers’ 2015 film The Witch: A New England Folktale and Ari Aster’s 2019 film Midsommar. Both films recreate and adapt folktales to align with horror, commenting upon the present through utilising narrative forms of the past. Contemporary connotations of the folktale are in turn dismantled and affirmed, as horrific elements of the folktale in the past and in the present are rendered visual through Horror. A working definition for folktales, alongside details about their origins and implications, will be drawn from Jack Zipes’ 1979 work Breaking the Magic Spell: Radical Theories of Folk and Fairy Tales. Clover’s theory of the Final Girl will be applied and altered in the context of Folk Horror. The structure and narratives of the folktale demonstrably align with the tropes and characteristics of horror.

Resumen
The main assertion of this thesis is that both 19th century and contemporary Gothic literary texts are characterised by fugitivity, embodied by the fugitive ‘figure’ which through its ambiguity is re-deploying the distinction proposed by Ross Chambers – inescapably both narrative and textual. The fugitive figure is intimately related to desire and its textual mobilisation. This mobilisation simulates the paradoxical experience of the sublime in which the pursuer of the fugitive figure is left speechless before the feared and desired unnamable other. Anne Rice’s ‘The vampire chronicles’ are discussed, as are ‘Frankenstein’, ‘The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ and ‘Dracula’. Analysis of these texts constitutes a ‘genealogy’, conceived and executed in poststructuralist terms, consisting of a deconstructive analysis inflected by psychoanalytic inputs. The genealogy is applied to indicate the importance of the family structure and its potential for dissolution in Gothic texts, and recreates a search for origins, which is a recurring theme in Gothic writing. The fugitive figure, through its embodiment of insatiable desire, is beyond either narrative or tropaic apprehension. It is in continual metamorphosis and invites pursuit in its different guises. However, although it appears as the objectified pursued, it actually arises from within the pursuer, so any attempt to arrest the disruptive flow it signifies is, although unavoidable and necessary, a self-deceptive act doomed to failure. This failure is registered simultaneously at narrative and textual levels.

Glisson, Silas Nease. "Cultural nationalism and colonialism in nineteenth-century Irish horror fiction". Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/16852.

Resumen
This thesis will explore how writers of nineteenth-century Irish horror fiction, namely short stories and novels, used their works to express the social, cultural, and political events of the period. My thesis will employ a New Historicist approach to discuss the effects of colonialism on the writings, as well as archetypal criticism to analyse the mythic origins of the relevant metaphors. The structuralism of Tzvetan Todorov will be used to discuss the notion of the works' appeal as supernatural or possibly realistic works. The theory of Mikhail Bakhtin is used to discuss the writers' linguistic choices because such theory focuses on how language can lead to conflicts amongst social groups. The introduction is followed by Chapter One, "Ireland as England's Fantasy." This chapter discusses Ireland's literary stereotype as a fantasyland. The chapter also gives an overview of Ireland's history of occupation and then contrasts the bucolic, magical Ireland of fiction and the bleak social conditions of much of nineteenth-century Ireland. Chapter Two, "Mythic Origins", analyses the use of myth in nineteenth-century horror stories. The chapter discusses the merging of Christianity and Celtic myth; I then discuss the early Irish belief in evil spirits in myths that eventually inspired horror literature. Chapter Three, "Church versus Big House, Unionist versus Nationalist," analyses how the conflicts of Church/Irish Catholicism vs. Big House/Anglo-Irish landlordism, proBritish Unionist vs. pro-Irish Nationalist are manifested in the tales. In this chapter, I argue that many Anglo-Irish writers present stern anti-Catholic attitudes, while both Anglo-Irish and Catholic writers use the genre as political propaganda. Yet the authors tend to display Home Rule or anti-Home Rule attitudes rather than religious loyalties in their stories. The final chapter of the thesis, "A Heteroglossia of British and Irish Linguistic and Literary Forms," deals with the use of language and national literary styles in Irish literature of this period. I discuss Bakhtin's notion of heteroglossia and its applications to the Irish novel; such a discussion because nineteenth-century Ireland was linguistically Balkanised, with Irish Gaelic, Hibemo-English, and British English all in use. This chapter is followed by a conclusion.

John William Polidori, the author of THE VAMPYRE; A Tale, was born in 1797. The work THE VAMPYRE is one of the most important works in the Gothic genre, because Polidori for the first time allowed readers to experience the visceral qualities of horror through what is called “vampirism” – the tales of vampires and their victims (Mutch, 2012, p. 7). Hence, Polidori became a well-regarded writer and one of the originators of vampire fictions. In accordance to the overt and covert strategies by House (1997, pp. 66-70) successful translations not only keep source information but also provide richly detailed background information for readers’ understanding. However, in analyzing the simplified Chinese translation produced in China and sourced from the website Yeeyan.org, the researcher found some sections would not convey to Taiwanese readers the visceral experience of terror and death as originally written in English. The present study elaborates on three steps in the textual analysis. First, the researcher applies Juliane House’s theories of overt and covert translation strategies for translating THE VAMPYRE in conveying Polidori’s style of vampirism to Taiwanese readers. Second, the researcher analysis and tries to identify the major differences between the two translations. Finally, the researcher will provide suggestions that translators evoke the interest to target readers by applying overt translation strategy.
