Texto completoThe purpose of this thesis is to present and analyze the innovations in the home video game industry and their impact on the competitive strategies of the companies in the indus-try. The existing literature about business cycles and business dynamics is scarce from busi-ness administrative perspective. This thesis contributes to fill the gap in the academic literature. The choice of the home video game industry has been done, due to its fast growing economic nature and the rapid changes that can be noticed, especially for the last decade. A qualitative research method with secondary qualitative and quantitative data and primary qualitative data through interviews has been used for this thesis. The home video game industry is highly driven by technological product innovations. Incremental innovations do not affect in a significant way the dynamics within the industry. Radical innovations create a competitive advantage through differentiation and they increase market share for the company which followed this strategy. Disruptive innovations open new markets, change the business environment for every firm and generate a shift in consumer preferences. Hence, the company which implements a disruptive innovation gains extensive market share. Innovations are possible due to the strategic orientation a company aims to pursue. If a company pursues a high market orientation and a low inno-vation orientation it manufactures an upgraded product to keep customers satisfied. When the firm pursues a high market and innovation orientation, the final product includes cha-racteristics that the customers desire. While at the same time the product created offers services and features hard to be matched by the competition. Finally, if a firm pursues a high innovation orientation and a low market orientation strategy, it creates an easier and more convenient alternative on the existing products while being cheaper. At the same time this strategic orientation disregards the established customers' desires. The purpose of this thesis is to present and analyze the innovations in the home video game industry and their impact on the competitive strategies of the companies in the indus-try. Texto completoInternet traffic is growing at a significant pace, especially with video content that already accounts for more than 50% of total of internet traffic. The reasons for this trend are increasing numbers in mobile devices, shifting focus from traditional television media to the online content, and advancement in internet technology. Internet infrastructure is facing challenges as it tries to meet the demand for video traffic. One solution is web caching, an area of research with many different proposed algorithms and implementations. This thesis examines the performance of a set of algorithms using a popular web caching software, Squid. The tests are done using a web automation tool, Selenium, to browse the web from a home network in three different scenarios: checking web content, videos, and a mix of web content and videos.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is motivated by an interest in a host of idiosyncratically interrelated phenomena that can be understood, in my view, as symptomatic of a primary interest in representing experiences of affect, loss, alienation and objectification of an “other”, which in turn, necessitates a critical interrogation of the notion of self. These phenomena include notions of the body (animal and human), private and public spaces, voyeurism, transgression, desire, fetishization, sentimentality and most critically, nostalgia as understood through experiences of homesickness and heimwee. My focus is on the affective potential of contemporary lens-based (photographic and video) art. I approach this study by way of three central ideas: the longing for home (the relationship between self/space); the longing for the body (the relationship between body/self); and the longing for the other (the relationship between self/other). I make use of psychoanalytic and feminist theory, as well as theoretical interpretations of photography and screen-based media, in the broader context of visual art and culture, to frame my discussion. As such, this study draws on the theoretical work of Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag to introduce basic concepts such as the relationship between photography and memory, and develops these to include ideas of the gaze, self and alientation from the self read through Judith Butler and Jacques Lacan’s image of the mirror phase; home and homesickness read through Martin Heidegger, Sigmund Freud’s notion of das unheimlich (uncanny) and Julia Kristeva’s notion of abjection; and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s objectification of the animal-other. This study is intimately linked with, and critically informed by my personal artistic practice, which focuses specifically on the photographic or filmic representation (projection) of separation, displacement and longing for an absent other (home, partner & domestic animal). I discuss my own work relation to selected examples by artists including Shizuka Yokomizo, Sophie Calle, Penny Siopis and Jo Ractliffe, among others, framing the art object and related processes as cathartic, mnemonic and talismanic; acknowledging the paradoxical aspect of photography as simultaneously distancing and acting as a trace of the real; and analysing the evocative (metaphorical or conceptual) allusions made possible by lens-based processes and their presentation as print and projection, image and screen.

Texto completoNocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE) seizures appear almost exclusively during sleep. The differential diagnosis between this condition and sleep-related non-epileptic paroxysmal motor phenomena, in particular parasomnias, is arduous. Moreover, accepted criteria for the diagnosis of NFLE are lacking. At present video-polysomnographic recording of the seizures during sleep is the gold standard for the diagnosis but this technique is expensive and not available everywhere. The aim of this study is to measure the diagnostic accuracy of clinical history, interictal EEG and home-made video in distinguishing NFLE from non-epileptic paroxysmal sleep disorders. 13 patients who presented paroxysmal motor phenomena during sleep were consecutively enrolled in our Department and a specific diagnostic examination battery was performed. After the completion of the examinations the results were analyzed by five experts in clinical sleep medicine and epilepsy and a diagnostic decision was made: 6 subjects were classified as NFLE, 2 as parasomnias and 5 as “uncertain” diagnosis. From experts diagnostic decision, the clinical history, interictal EEG and home-made video diagnostic accuracy were calculated. The diagnostic accuracy was overall moderate and showed only slight differences between the procedures. However, it is essential to improve the diagnostic accuracy of clinical history, interictal EEG and home-made video recording that could be helpful in cases difficult to diagnose or when VEPSG monitoring is not available. In addition, future research should define reliable clinical and VEPSG criteria for the diagnosis of nocturnal frontal lobe seizures.

Texto completoVisual lifelog indexing by content has emerged as a high reward application. Enabled by the recent availability of miniaturized recording devices, the demand for automatic extraction of relevant information from wearable sensors generated content has grown. Among many other applications, indoor localization is one challenging problem to be addressed. Many standard solutions perform unreliably in indoors conditions or require significant intervention. In this thesis we address from the perspective of wearable video camera sensors using an image-based approach. The key contribution of this work is the development and the study of a location estimation system composed of diverse modules, which perform tasks ranging from low-level visual information extraction to final topological location estimation with the aid of automatic indexing algorithms. Within this framework, important contributions have been made by efficiently leveraging information brought by multiple visual features, unlabeled image data and the temporal continuity of the video.Early and late data fusion were considered, and shown to take advantage of the complementarities of multiple visual features describing the images. Due to the difficulty in obtaining annotated data in our context, semi-supervised approaches were investigated, to use unlabeled data as additional source of information, both for non-linear data-adaptive dimensionality reduction, and for improving classification. Herein we have developed a time-aware co-training approach that combines late data-fusion with the semi-supervised exploitation of both unlabeled data and time information. Finally, we have proposed to apply transformation invariant learning to adapt non-invariant descriptors to our localization framework. The methods have been tested on controlled publically available datasets to evaluate the gain of each contribution. This work has also been applied to the IMMED project, dealing with activity recognition and monitoring of the daily living using a wearable camera. In this context, the developed framework has been used to estimate localization on the real world IMMED project video corpus, which showed the potential of the approaches in such challenging conditions

Texto completoOn the one hand, technology advances have led to the expansion of the handheld devices market. Thanks to this expansion, people are more and more connected and more and more data are exchanged over the Internet. On the other hand, this huge amound of data imposes drastic constrains in order to achieve sufficient quality. The Internet is now showing its limits to assure such quality. To answer nowadays limitations, a next generation Internet is envisioned. This new network takes into account the content nature (video, audio, ...) and the context (network state, terminal capabilities ...) to better manage its own resources. To this extend, video manipulation is one of the key concept that is highlighted in this arising context. Video content is more and more consumed and at the same time requires more and more resources. Adapting videos to the network state (reducing its bitrate to match available bandwidth) or to the terminal capabilities (screen size, supported codecs, …) appears mandatory and is foreseen to take place in real time in networking devices such as home gateways. However, video adaptation is a resource intensive task and must be implemented using hardware accelerators to meet the desired low cost and real time constraints. In this thesis, content- and context-awareness is first analyzed to be considered at the network side. Secondly, a generic low cost video adaptation system is proposed and compared to existing solutions as a trade-off between system complexity and quality. Then, hardware conception is tackled as this system is implemented in an FPGA based architecture. Finally, this system is used to evaluate the indirect effects of video adaptation; energy consumption reduction is achieved at the terminal side by reducing video characteristics thus permitting an increased user experience for End-Users
