Resumen
The aim of this study was to illuminate the meaning of receiving help from home nursing care for the chronically ill, elderly persons living in their homes. The study was carried out in Norway. Data were collected by narrative interviews and analysed by phenomenological hermeneutic interpretations. Receiving help from home nursing care sometimes meant ‘Being ill and dependent on help’. Other times it meant ‘Being at the mercy of help’. It could also mean ‘Feeling inferior as a human being’. Sometimes help was given by nurses who were respectful and proficient at caring for an elderly person, while at other times nurses seemed to be incompetent and worked with a paternalistic attitude without respect for privacy. Receiving help also meant elderly persons wanted to be regarded and approached as equal human beings, supported in the courage to meet challenges in life.

Resumen
The present research was aimed to investigate the space and accident risk factors of elderly in home bathroom, risk problems, and the current functional limitations for elderly. The study investigated spaces of bathrooms in 30 homes currently living by elderly by conducting an assessment of proper bathroom environmental features, and interviews with the elderly at home. Results of assessment of bathroom spaces of all homes under the study categorized into 5 aspects of importance suggested a low level of propriety ( = 2.22 , S.D.=0.85). For sub-aspects of importance, suitable size and proportion were at a low level ( = 2.18 , S.D.=0.73), and the design materials were at a lowest level ( = 1.26 , S.D.=0.41). In conclusion, all of the studied spaces were found with inappropriate environment to accommodate the use by elderly. The researcher recognized the problems, roles, and importance of involved individuals and thus proposed guidelines for the design of home bathroom under the universal design concept so as to guide good standards as a key factor for taking improvement action for accident prevention and preparation of sound environment for elderly.

Resumen
In Turkey, in the families who moved from rural settlements into city, the young peoples go to work and the grand parents take care of the little children at home. When the grand parents become old, there will be no one who can take care of them. This situation shows two solutions: to move back to their native environment or to be settled in a nursing home. If they have no where to go, these nursing homes are their only chance. The private nursing and caring homes, from the point of quality, are not in the same equality. The low-quality institutions are more familiar to the abuse. The residents of these institutions expect kindness, affection and warmth, but they never receive these expectations.A new kind of elderly abuse in Turkey is the Automatic Transfer Machines thefts. On the paydays the thief comes next to the machine, offers help to the elderly who came to take his retirement salary from the machine; the thief takes the ATM card, put in the hole, ask the password, enter it and take the money and run with a high speed. The poor old person looks after. There are no criminal codes yet which cover the elderly abuse in Turkey. Those kinds of incidents are taken as ordinary police incidents. The administration is now in preparation of a new program and a new regulation.

As a medical student doing a rotation, I was feeling positive as we knocked on the door of an elderly lady who I'd seen just 2 days earlier. Even though seriously ill for many months, this patient had always lived life in her own way, refusing to go to a nursing home. It was clear that her condition had deteriorated rapidly, and the nurse informed me privately that she was dying, sooner rather than later.

Resumen
Smart home solutions based on the internet of things (IoT) can improve quality of life management. However, there is a dearth of comprehensive literature that can help researchers and practitioners better comprehend why older adults accept or reject smart home services. These users represent a significant hurdle in the successful implementation of smart home services. Therefore, this study’s primary objective was to provide a concise, systematic review of current issues in the pre-adoption of smart home services for the elderly. In addition, factors that impact the intention of the elderly on IoT-based smart home services (SHS-IoT) pre-adoption were also examined. A total of 705 initial papers on smart homes for the elderly were found across credible scientific databases. Out of these papers, 30 publications met this study’s inclusion criteria for the final review. The findings revealed that older adults’ attitudes towards smart homes are positive, particularly for safety/security monitoring and independent assisted living. Besides, the lack of well-defined information theories exists in the literature on the use of smart home services by the elderly. Additionally, several challenges currently faced hindering the pre-adoption of smart home services and how future research could better understand the perspective of older adults to choose a suitable benchmark are presented in this paper.

Resumen
IntroductionExisting literature on attitudes toward end-of-life care (EoLC) covers the general public but has little information on the frail elderly population. The aim of the current study is to investigate the preferences of Chinese frail elderly home residents with respect to EoLC by conducting cross-sectional surveys. Methods and analysisSurveys, including resident and family versions, were developed based on the existing literature and our pilot interviews. The targeted participants were 400 frail elderly home residents (aged ≥65 years old) and 200 family caregivers. Purposive sampling will be used as each elderly home will help to recruit five to 15 elderly participants for the study. Descriptive analysis and modelling will be used to examine preferences on EoLC and related factors, as well as to compare the responses of elderly home residents with those of their family caregivers.Ethics and disseminationThe cross-sectional survey has obtained approval from the Institutional Review Board. Confidentiality and safety issues will be carefully observed. The results of the study will be disseminated through international conferences, peer-reviewed academic journal publications, and a report in plain language to be shared with elderly residential homes.

Resumen
The purpose of this paper is to propose implications by analyzing the factors affecting the use of home-help services of long-term care according to gender. Anderson's Behavioral Model was used, and 4,503 elderly aged 65 or older were finally analyzed from the 16th data of the Korean Welfare Panel. The main findings are as follows. First, in common for both groups, the super-aged elderly, low level of social relationship satisfaction, and low level of subjective health status increased the probability of using home service. Second, unlike the elderly male, the worse the family relationship satisfaction, the more chronic the disease, and the higher the residential environment satisfaction, and the higher the probability of using home-help service. Based on the results of an empirical analysis of the factors of home-help services of long-term care, this study proposed empirical methods of service use by gender characteristics and provided discussions on policy support.

Resumen
Purpose Smart home devices have great potential to improve the quality of life and independence of older people, positively impacting their health, safety, and comfort. However, Chinese research in this field is still in its early stages. Therefore, more comprehensive and in-depth studies are needed to comprehend the various aspects influencing the acceptance and use of smart homes by older users. Patients and methods This study adopted the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and included perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, usage intention, intergenerational technology support, perceived value, and perceived risk as extension variables to delve deeper into the behavioral intentions of older users in smart home services. The study used a convenience sampling method to randomly distribute 236 questionnaires among older adults over the age of 60 in the school’s community and neighboring urban communities who have experience in smart home use and who can complete human-computer interactions either independently or with the help of others, mainly focusing on the four sections: user characteristics, family situation, experience of use, and usage intention. The study used structural equation modeling (SEM) and factor analysis to analyze the completion of questionnaires. Finally, we conducted a validation analysis of the rationality and scientificity of the model and derived the six dimensions of the model of the influencing factors on the use of smart home products by the elderly and the weight sizes of their corresponding 13 influencing factors. Results The results show that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use have a positive effect on users’ intention to use smart homes. Perceived ease of use has a positive effect on the perceived usefulness of smart homes. In addition, intergenerational technology support, perceived value, and perceived risk impact users’ perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of the smart home. Conclusion This research aims to describe the factors influencing older users’ willingness to use smart homes. The findings are not only significant for the elderly in China but also of broad value to other regions and countries facing similar demographic challenges. The development of smart homes not only involves the elderly but is also closely related to all segments of society. The government should increase policy support and guide more social forces to participate in the development of the smart home industry. Service providers and designers should fully understand the demand situation and user experience of target users to develop easy-to-use smart home solutions. At the same time, smart homes, as intelligent products for the elderly, need to focus not only on the basic needs of the elderly such as material life and home safety, but also on the spiritual needs of elderly users. Children or caregivers should always pay attention to the psychological state of the elderly and actively guide them to use smart homes to help them realize their self-worth. We look forward to more research focusing on this area in the future and further exploring the specific issues and solutions involved.

Resumen
The general aims for the care of the elderly in Sweden are to ensure financial security, good housing, service, and care for the elderly. In this regard, two pieces of recent legislation apply: the Social Service Act of 1982 and the Health and Medical Services Act of 1983. The 1982 act emphasizes the right of the individual to receive public service and help at all stages of life; the 1983 act is intended to maintain a good standard of health and to provide care on equal terms for all. In summary, both laws emphasize that help is to be given to everyone who needs help to support himself or herself in everyday needs. Further, this help should be given in as normal a setting as possible. This means that society should help the elderly to remain in their homes for as long as possible, and that the integrity and autonomy of the elderly should be preserved in the home-care environment.

Resumen
Smart homes, as one of the most prosperous industries of the Internet of Things, have tremendous potential in helping the elderly aging in place and dealing with the global aging society challenges. This study takes the needs of future elderly in China as a starting point and proposes that the core requirement of the aging group is “connectivity”, smart homes for older adults should assist them with connectivity establishment both physically and psychologically to improve their quality of life and help them live an independent, safe, and happy life in their older stage. The article defines the types of elderly connectivity needs as two main types and eight sub-connectivity, and further puts forward thirty smart home subsystems and their implementation elements. Moreover, the research applies the Kano model and questionnaire survey to provide the empirical proof of those thirty smart home subsystems based on the analysis of 371 questionnaire responses. Last but not least, we construct a five-layer architecture and abstract four principles on the connectivity building of a smart home for future Chinese elders. The research explores the possibility of building a wide range of connectivity and all-around happiness smart home environment for future elderly, which provides significant insights and an important reference for both the smart home industry and the pension industry.

Resumen
Pandemics and lockdowns may be associated with unpremeditated consequences, such as bodyweight changes, isolation, as well as sedentarity. Reports have been published on malnutrition among patients suffering from COVID-19. This study aimed to highlight the short-term effects of the lockdown on the nutritional health of elderly people living at home and benefiting from home care services, yet without any COVID-19 pathology. In 50 subjects displaying weight, body mass index, and MNA score stability two months earlier, we observed significant alterations in these parameters following the lockdown. Thus, malnutrition rose from 28–34% to 58%. Furthermore, trigger factors for malnutrition changed, with social isolation accounting for 64% of the confinement’s deleterious effects among the elderly. In conclusion, despite the elderly being not directly affected by SARS-CoV2, the nutritional status of elderly subjects living at home with no or only mild autonomy loss was greatly and rapidly affected by the lockdown. Moreover, the main trigger factors for malnutrition were essentially related to social isolation and depressive syndromes. Knowing the impact of confinement on the elderly’s health, these results may help further modulate ongoing public health interventions in case of future lockdowns.

Resumen
Aims: To describe a simple basic complementary humanity act such as nursing home visit that can help a group of marginalized and abandoned elderly with no family who live together as residents of a non-profit nursing home feel better with simple but universal human touch and also to maintain or improve the functional status of elderly and reduce the use of institutional care services; an approach that can be consider as an alternative that complement the medical management of the elderly Study Design: Interventional cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Private non-profit nursing home Yayasan Bunga Bakung, north Jakarta, Indonesia, between November-December 2023. Methodology: 12 individuals (1 man, 11 women; age range 65-85 years) with geriatric syndrome whose previously live alone with no family, no social security, abandoned and marginalized, which are then accommodated and maintained by a non-profit foundation in a nursing home as subject to our visit. Three out of these 12 residents have definite post-stroke condition with weakness or paralysis on one side of their body, and having problems with co-ordination and balance. 7 out of 12 suffer from hypertension. We conducted five simple and basic nursing home visit to maintain and improve the functional status of elderly and minimize the use of institutional care services. In the first two visit, a small advanced team conducted simple focus group discussion (to the management in the first visit, and to the inmates during the second visit) regarding the daily management of the continuity of nursing homes as well as the advantages and disadvantages and future hopes felt by the inmates. The third visit is our main social activity which centered on all the elderly and followed by the fourth and fifth visit where simple observation and analysis of the inmate’s response to the previous visit conducted. Results: Observation conducted during the fourth and fifth showed a slight improvement. This basic risk limitation group intervention) related to the performance of the elderly, such as in the context of topics of conversation among themselves as well as increased personal perceptions regarding feelings of worth, being given attention, being considered present and important. A risk limitation group approach like the one that we did seems promising, but further scientific evidence is needed Conclusion: Non-invasive complementary humanitarian approach for maintaining and even improving functional status of elderly is a possible approach that may produce happiness and well-being, and reduce medical as well as financial burden, hence improving the real time psycho-biological welfare is part of the management of geriatric problem. This approach, however, need further work to validate reliability.

Resumen
Background. Nursing homes face challenges in the coming years due to the increased number of elderly. Quality will be under pressure, expectations of the services will rise, and clinical complexity will grow. New strategies are needed to meet this situation. Modern clinical information systems with decision support may be part of that. Objectives. To study the impact of introducing an electronic patient record system with decision support on the use of warfarin, neuroleptics and weighing of patients, in nursing homes. Methods. A prevalence study was performed in seven nursing homes with 513 subjects. A before-after study with internal controls was performed. Results. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in the seven nursing homes was 18.8%. After intervention, the proportion of all patients taking warfarin increased from 3.0% to 9.8% (P=0.0086), neuroleptics decreased from 33.0% to 21.5% (P=0.0121), and the proportion not weighed decreased from 72.6% to 16.0% (P<0.0001). The internal controls did not change significantly. Conclusion. Statistics and management data can be continuously produced to monitor the quality of work processes. The electronic health record system and its system for decision support can improve drug therapy and monitoring of treatment policy.

Despite the policy importance, particularly as society ages, little is known about the impact of informal care on nursing home admissions. This paper jointly models the receipt of regular help from adult children and subsequent nursing home care, using data from the Study of Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD). Results indicate that frequent help from children with basic personal care reduces the likelihood of nursing home use over a subsequent two-year period by about 60% for disabled Americans age 70 and older. However, we found no significant reduction in nursing home admissions when help was measured more broadly to include assistance with chores and errands.

Resumen
A nursing home provides skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services to people with illnesses, injuries or functional disabilities, but most facilities serve the elderly. Nursing homes provide various services for different residents’ needs, including daily care, assistance for the mentally disabled, and drug rehabilitation. The levels of care and quality of care provided by nursing homes have increased significantly over the past decade. The trend is toward continuous quality development and resident satisfaction; therefore, healthcare technology plays a significant role in nursing home operations. This article discusses general information about current nursing home conditions and systems in the United States and explores how technology and e-health help improve the nursing home development based on the present needs and trends. The authors also report on Thomasville Nursing Home, discussing current trends in nursing home technologies.

Resumen
An ageing population is a global phenomenon. Like other developed economies, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), China, also faces a severe ageing problem. One initiative to enhance the safe living and well-being of the growing elderly population is to assist them by building ageing-friendly living environments with the application of smart home technologies (SHTs). Therefore, this study focused on investigating the perception of professionals on the use of SHTs to improve and enhance the “ageing-in-place” (AIP) of elderly residents in HKSAR, China. A questionnaire survey was employed to obtain the perception of professionals with requisite knowledge of the older people facility needs regarding SHTs in achieving AIP for the elderly. The data retrieved were analysed with different statistical analyses. Based on the results of the analyses, all the professionals had similar perceptions of the use of SHTs for the safety and well-being of the elderly, except for the incongruence observed between the government employees, contractors and academic regarding how SHTs may not help to better monitor elderly daily activities. The possible reasons for the inconsistent opinions of the academics with other groups were linked to the knowledge of human behaviours and early dementia symptoms in gerontology. The findings will help care receivers, healthcare professionals, social workers, policymakers, smart home designers and developers to improve and enhance AIP in elderly residences in HKSAR, China.

Resumen
In a prospective study 102 patients (median age 70.9 years) were interviewed at home before and after elective surgery to assess whether they would have any difficulties in managing their activities of daily living (ADL) post-operatively. The patients were consecutive admissions in general surgery, gynaecology and urology. All patients were alive six months after surgery and 98 were cured of their condition. Twelve patients suffered a deterioration in their ability to perform various ADLs but none was institutionalised as additional help was given either by a spouse or by a home help. Elective surgery in this age group is worthwhile and carries with it minimal deleterious effects on social rehabilitation and few demands on community resources.

Resumen
As yet the determinants of the need for nursing homes and old age homes are not clearly understood. This may be due to the fact that care facilities providing different levels of care may yield different predictors of use. Moreover, the absence of theory and ignorance of the problems with ‘use‘ as the dependent variable, may be responsible for this. In this study these issues are addressed explicitly. The study focuses on the need for living in an old age home and a theoretical model predicts under what circumstances frail elderly people will express the need for living in such a home. Findings show that, as hypothesised, loss of comfort and affection are among the main predictors of a strong orientation towards living in an old age home. Resources to counter the loss of comfort and affection – a spouse, income, home adaptations, private help, informal and formal home care – were only partly effective in their hypothesised function of deterring orientation towards living in an old age home. Pressure from others to apply for an old age home had the strongest effect. The findings are discussed and some implications for policy are considered.

Resumen
The large number of family activities carried out outside the home makes them always feel worried and anxious about the activities carried out by the elderly at home. This will be a problem when the elderly carer has important activities outside the home and has to leave the elderly person alone. If an elderly person falls, the sensor will detect the pressure of the fall and reduced balance in the elderly wheelchair. Then the MPU6050 sensor will send input to the nodemcu which controls the entire circuit for processing by sending a signal to the Blynk application as an output processor with a notification in the form of a short message that the elderly person has fallen, from the wheelchair which is displayed on the user's cellphone which has the blynk application installed. With this tool, it is easier for elderly caretakers to know the condition of elderly people when they are in a wheelchair, and it is also quicker to help elderly people if they fall from a wheelchair by notifying them via message notifications in the Blynk application.

Resumen
A trial was performed of an intelligent monitoring system which used sensors in the home to identify emergencies by detecting deviations from normal activity patterns. The field trial lasted three months. Twentytwo elderly people agreed to participate. Their ages ranged from early 60s to over 85, with two-thirds in the age range 75-84 years. They lived in four different localities within the UK-Ipswich, Northumberland, Merseyside and Nottingham. A total of 61 alerts was recorded, at a mean frequency about one alert per month per client. Of the 61 alerts generated, 46 were classified as false alerts and the other 15 as genuine, although no real emergencies occurred during the study. Many people in the field trial reported enhanced feelings of safety and security, which could help to stimulate independence and help them to remain living in their own homes. The monitoring system increased the care choices available to elderly people and supported and enhanced the carer's role.

Resumen
Elderly nursing homes in South Korea are vulnerable to evacuation in emergency situations such as fires. There are many elderly residents with reduced self-walking ability, so if a disaster such as a fire occurs, it is very likely to lead to a large number of human injuries. In elderly nursing homes, it is impossible for many elderly people to evacuate voluntarily without the help of staff. Therefore, it is very important to guide the behavior of staff when evacuating. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of evacuation behavior of staff on evacuation time in a fire emergency in an elderly nursing home by adopting an agent-based simulation approach. The effect of staff evacuation behavior on the evacuation time was investigated based on the results of a new agent-based evacuation simulation model. In the simulation model, there are conditions for caregivers to designate and evacuate the elderly, as well as to set the evacuation priority for the elderly. The results of this study show that having the elderly occupants designated by the staff according to their zones and evacuating them together was the most important in reducing the evacuation time. This study contributes to a new agent-based evacuation simulation model by confirming whether the evacuation behavior of employees affects the evacuation time.

Resumen
AbstractBackgroundNumbers of the elderly have been on a steady increase both in Poland and other countries of the world. As they age, their health declines and they need help with their housekeeping. This, coupled with the transformation of intergenerational into single-generation or nuclear family structures, causes a markedly rising demand for institutional care. Holistic care of an elderly nursing home resident requires a comprehensive approach and consideration for their feelings. Loneliness and solitude are increasingly common among these feelings, undoubtedly affecting quality of life.Method250 elderly residents of seven nursing home situated in Mazovia, Poland, have been examined using: De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, WHOQOL-BREF Questionnaire, Basic Hope Scale (BHI-12), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS).ResultsLoneliness affects nearly 40% residents of the homes surveyed. Quality of their residents’ lives is reduced. Relations with their families and levels of motor efficiency imply a sense of loneliness. Degrees of illness acceptance, ability to adjust to change, and life satisfaction influence the level of loneliness felt.Conclusion40% of nursing home residents exhibit a sense of loneliness, while the greater loneliness and solitude, the lower the quality of life.

Resumen
This paper deals with home automation systems that are essential for safe and independent living of elderly people. These individuals must be able to perform their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) without help from caretakers. They must be confident enough that help is just a few minutes with the systems in place. The focus will be on the medical and emergency systems, which are most essential for independent living. Zigbee based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are used to collect the data throughout the home. Smart shirts and smart phones monitor different parameters of the individual and transmit the data to the home network. A PC running LabVIEW is used as the central control unit for the entire house. The house must have a fail proof communication framework for connecting with emergency services, doctors, helpers and relatives. The home network is connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and internet. SMS, email, prerecorded voice-based telephone calls are appropriately used to report emergencies. A GUI (Graphical User Interface) was built in LabVIEW in order to control and simulate an entire home. Ambient Intelligence is built into the system to make it adaptive and dynamic as far as possible.

Resumen
Provision of home care support services is currently propounded as a means of facilitating family care of the dependent aged. In this study, interviews were carried out with forty two providers of care and accommodation for an elderly relative. The data indicate that those careproviders who were extensive users of formal support services were also likely to express the need for still more help with their careproviding task. Although increased cost, level of co-operation from the elderly relative, and reluctance, to introduce change into the routine of these dependants were cited as reasons for not satisfying the need for help, it is plausible that mutual dependency between the careproviders and the elderly relative also influenced service use. Recognition and acknowledgement of such a relationship has implications for the planning and delivery of home care support services.

Resumen
Shifting to old age homes is a rather new concept in Pakistan. However, it is happening. And there is a need to make it an easy transition for the elderly. The idea was to explore all the issues the elderly face while shifting to old age homes so that they can be tackled in the best possible way. This qualitative study was carried out with the help of 22 respondents, including both males and females residing in three major old homes of Punjab. The interview technique was utilized to gather data, and then themes were analyzed. The thematic analysis of the gathered data indicated various themes, including autonomy and old homes, decision and dependability, quality of life, establishing new relationships and emotional reactions to relocation. Other than these themes, lack of a proper transitional process and role of the staff members are also highlighted. The themes that are being identified in the research will help in highlighting all the issues elderly face while shifting to old age homes. Since it is something that is not in accordance with our cultural values, a proper support system is required to make it as smooth as possible.

Resumen
Due to increasing ageing, western countries are facing an increase in financial needs to provide suitable healthcare, social care and housing for the elderly. One of society?s responses to these issues is the idea of moving elder-care activities to their living environments. This can be achieved with the help of information and communication technologies (ICT) by which home care could be provided remotely. However, the findings of various authors suggest that elderly people have mostly negative attitudes towards a remote home care. In order to determine the views of the elderly towards this service in Slovenia, a survey was conducted, the results of which are discussed in this article. Contrary to our assumption, it turned out that elderly people have positive attitudes towards remote home care. This was attributed to effectively informing respondents and increasing their understanding of the operation and usability of the service. Raising the awareness of potential users is therefore crucial for its acceptance in a society.

Resumen
This study aimed to analyze and interpret the meaning of dignified death for the elderly in nursing homes using phenomenological techniques for caregivers' experiences of caring practices. Two in-depth interviews were conducted with five caregivers who had worked in nursing homes for more than five years. Data were analyzed with the four stages of Giorgi's phenomenological qualitative research method. After analyzing the data, 25 meaning units, 6 sub-components, and 3 components were derived: 1) embracing death with love, with sub-components of ‘staring at death that was turned away’ and ‘facing the death of the elderly’; 2) finding meaning in the void, with sub-components of ‘experiencing the infinite in finite existence’ and ‘finding meaning that endures meaninglessness’; and 3) writing my history book in the present, with sub-components of ‘summoning the past buried in small talk’ and ‘performing a ritual of self-renewal’. This study concludes that the meaning and essence of the experience of dignified death for the elderly by caregivers who perform care work for the elderly in nursing homes are to provide opportunities for enjoyment and communication in the midst of daily life in nursing homes, to relieve the loneliness of the elderly, and to help the elderly feel satisfied with their lives in the closest place.

Individuals who have good psychological conditions will commonly be able to create social relatedness and good moral feelings. The purpose of this study was to determine the social and moral feelings of the elderly in the Ikhwanus Shafa Lasi Mudo nursing home in Canduang District, Indonesia. This research used descriptive approach taking six key informants who are elderly residents aged 60 years and over, and the supporting informants consisted of two caregivers. The observation and interview results were analysed by reduction, presentation, verification, and comparison of the results. Specifically, this study focused on social feelings, sense of brotherhood, sympathy for friends who are in the orphanage environment, and sense of affection for others. It was found that in general, there showed a lack a sense of solidarity among others, a lack sense of help and respect. The elderly in this study informed that they developed such feelings that they are too close to the people in the orphanage compared to their family members. However, the moral feeling of the elderly has shown a good relationship between values and ethics (morals), where the elderly were able to take responsibility, feel guilty when violating norms, and feel at ease when obeying norms.

Resumen
In a randomised and controlled intervention study elderly people aged 75 or more were visited regularly in their own homes over a period of three years. An age and sex matched control group was not contacted until the conclusion of the study period. In the present study, the use of social and health services during the terminal 18 months of life was computed for each individual member of the study group. The categories of services included the bed usage in hospitals, the stays in nursing homes, the provisions of home help and home nursing care as well as contacts with general practitioners. No differences in the use of social and health services were found between the visited elderly ( n=25) and the control group ( n=46). About 50% of the elderly had a considerable use of public services during the months prior to death, and only 14% received no public support, disregarding the terminal phase. Among those elderly people belonging to the study group, and who died within the study period, an increased use of the above mentioned services was seen during all 18 months. However, an increased use of hospital beds was only computed during the terminal 6 months of life. 58% of the bed days were used for patients who died during the next few months.

Resumen
Touch technology-based smart homes have become increasingly prevalent, as they can help people with independent daily life, especially for the elderly. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of button features (i.e., button size, graphics/text ratio, and icon style) in smart home interfaces on user performance across two age groups. Participants in the young group (n = 15) and senior group (n = 15) completed a clicking task. Button size ranged from 10 mm to 25 mm with 5 mm increments. The three levels of graphics/text ratio were 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3, while icon style was either flat or skeuomorphic. Results showed that button size and graphics/text ratio had significant effects on user performance in both groups, whereas icon style only had an effect in the senior group. It was observed that the elderly were fond of buttons with a larger size of 20 mm with larger texts and skeuomorphic icons, whereas the young preferred a button size of 15 mm with equal-sized graphics and text. These results may help to improve the accessibility and usability of smart home interface design.
