Resumen
This article aims to conceptualize home and homemaking for people in protracted displacement. The article serves three purposes: to present an overview of the area of inquiry; to develop an analytical framework for under- standing home and homemaking for forced migrants in protracted displacement; and to introduce the special issue. It explores how protracted displacement has been defined—from policy definitions to people’s experiences of protractedness, including “waiting” and “the permanence of temporariness.” The article identifies the ambivalence embedded in experiences and practices of homemaking in long-term displacement, demonstrating how static notions of home and displacement might be unsettled. It achieves this through examining relationships between mobility and stasis, the material and symbolic, between the past, present, and future, and multiple places and scales. The article proposes a conceptual framework—a triadic constellation of home—that enables an analysis of home in different contexts of protracted displacement. The framework helps to explore home both as an idea and a practice, distinguishing among three elements: “home” as the day-to-day practices of homemaking, “Home” as representing values, traditions, memories, and feelings of home, and the broader political and historical contexts in which “HOME” is understood in the current global order and embedded in institutions. In conclusion, the article argues that a feminist and dynamic understanding of home-Home-HOME provides a more holistic perspective of making home in protracted displacement that promotes a more extensive and more sophisticated academic work, policies, and practices.

Resumen
Providing shelter and housing is a core area of humanitarian assistance for displaced populations. Georgia, a former Soviet republic in the South Caucasus, has experienced displacement since the early 1990s, and housing has proved to be politically contentious and a major concern during the 20-year displacement crisis. In Georgia, as elsewhere, homemaking takes place during displacement in dwellings that are temporary and not supposed to last. The article explores the conditions that enable such homemaking and discusses what Iris Marion Young terms “home as a critical value.” One trial project is used as an example: the building of 42 small houses, termed “block houses,” in Kutaisi, Western Georgia, by the Norwegian Refugee Council in 2002 and 2003. The article explores the relationships and homemaking practices in and around the houses that people have developed since that date. Relative to others, the project has been a positive example of how to enable home as a critical value. The article first defines house-as-home and introduces the case explored; it then discusses internal displacement and “durable housing solutions” in Georgia, before turning to explore how shelter, housing, home, and homemaking can be conceptualized in displacement . By engaging with Iris Marion Young’s “home as a critical value,” the article analyzes how people have adjusted to and adapted the block houses in Kutaisi to understand the relationship between the houses and the homemaking that takes place within and around them. The concluding section discusses how home as a critical value may help to show the importance of identity and social status for housing strategies in protracted displacement.

Resumen
The destruction by fire of Smyrna, a rich port city on the coast of Asia Minor, in 1922,at the climax of the war between Greece and Turkey, and the consequent exchange of populations signed at Lausanne in 1923 are events that have left a lasting mark on Greek national narratives and modern Greek literary production. 1922 Smyrna also marked one of the final acts in the emergence of early-twentieth century nation-states constructed upon the idea of homogeneity. The inheritance of the implications of enforced homogeneity led writers to return to Smyrna to explore the instability of identities behind the traumatised narratives of war and expulsion and to interrogate the narrative production of „home.‟ This article examines how three novels originally published in the English language and thus widely available, namely Eric Ambler‟s The Mask of Dimitrios (1939), Jeffrey Eugenides‟s Middlesex (2002) and Panos Karnezis‟s The Maze (2004), return to 1922 Smyrna as to a site traumatised by war and create a discursive space lining 1922 to other historical times and to other narratives and modern anxieties. The focus on displacement counteracts the neat arrangement of nationalities designed by the Treaty of Lausanne making Smyrna a real utopia.

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa around the tumultuous time of the Soweto uprisings of 1976. The first few years of my life were spent living with relatives and friends of my mother in Langa while she worked in the city in various households as a domestic worker. Her occupation took her away for long periods of time. By the age of two my mother and I moved to Woodstock where we lived with a family that consisted of five adults, who each had children of their own all under one small roof. The house was always full of people.

Resumen
What happens when home moves and has to resettle somewhere else because of contemporary invocations of diaspora? In a series of meaningful displacements one might have multiple homes with different reasons for maintaining some form of attachment to each. Through a semi-structured approach, letting narratives unfold as they come up, I ask: What did you leave? What did you meet? What did you get and give? What could that be? An architectural alphabet evolves that tells stories, comes with things and moments but perhaps most important questions the habitual and the culturally specific. How can we understand what a home is if I do not ask what a home was, is for someone else or could be? And not only through the homes we idealize but through the displaced homes that actually have to meet ours. Could this alphabet be used to provoke the limited one we have today and help us towards the prospect of choice by imagining a future whereupon there could, or maybe simply should, be so many more? More to be used to rethink and deviate from a standard mark that negates a past for some and make the transition more than a continuum for others.

Resumen
The conflict that ravaged Northern Uganda for two decades led to displacement of nearly two million northern Ugandans. The majority remained within the country borders fleeing into IDP camps, towns and cities. This thesis explores urban IDPs’ practices in a migration process and, furthermore, how this process is influencing the notion of home and identity which in turn have an impact on the discussion on solutions to displacement. The empirical data in this thesis were collected in Acholi Quarter, Kampala, using qualitative methods in a period of three months from August to beginning of November 2012. Some of the urban IDPs first moved into camps and then later migrated further to Kampala, while others moved directly to the city. However, common for all migrants was the importance of the social network as a factor enabling them to migrate. Many years away from their place of origin has made them adopt new strategies in order to survive in the urban context. The ‘new’ life in Kampala has inevitably influenced their notion of home and identity. It was a difference between the younger and the older generation’s understanding of home as they related to the past, present and future in a different way. Their identities changed accordingly in a frequent negotiation involving choices of accommodation or resistance of new worldviews. The impact of the changing notion of home and identity has led to an ambivalent attitude to return.

Resumen
The Sri Lankan civil war has been ongoing for over twenty years. Fought out in the civilian areas of the North and East of Sri Lanka, between the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) it has completely transformed the lives of ordinary people living in the primary battlefields of the North and East. The last twenty years has seen massive internal and external displacement from the North and East as well as the complete reordering of physical and social landscapes of the past, the present, and thus the future. This thesis is centred roughly on stories of one place, Jaffna and the concept of ur/home that Daniel (1984) argues is central to ideas of Tamil personhood. I examine what home means when disproportionate movement occurs and what happens to displaced families and individuals. The thesis examines both Tamils and Muslims from the North, and takes at the heart of its inquiry, the nature of belonging, and who is allowed to belong and who is not. Through a few individual biographies I trace themes of displacements and memory. I look at what people's ideas of home are, and, what happens to these ideas of home in displacement. In particular I examine how people come to find that by inhabiting different places/homes, they may become different kinds of persons. This becomes folded into generational structures. Thus I look at the work of inheritance of property, memory, kinship that different generations attempt to transmit and pass on in an attempt to be related to each other. The intimate and the familial are linked to the ongoing political situation where the interior becomes the repository of stories disallowed in the exterior. I use the metaphor of houses and rooms in my thesis to point to the conditions of internal terror that framed my research. Tamils, living with internal terror, could only tell stories in the spaces of the interior. In contrast working with Muslims, outdoor ethnography was possible. I discuss the freedom to belong, denied to Muslims, and the freedom to speak, denied to Tamils. Thus, I reflect upon the different imaginations of speaking and silence, residence and belonging for different political and social locations within the same history and place. In the end this is a thesis about how individuals reflect upon their lives. While it is not based in Jaffna, it is on Jaffna past, Jaffna present, Jaffna imagined and Jaffna lost. It looks at the specificities of how people deal with the larger human dramas of love, loss, home and the relationship of the self to kin.

Resumen
This thesis examines contemporary Canadian art practices, which aim to challenge the notion of multiculturalism as a purported 'solution' to the cultural, racial and ethnic diversity that comprises the nation. Specifically focusing on the work of Canadian artists, Jin-me Yoon, Kinga Araya and Ken Lum, I explore the mythology surrounding Canada's liberal pluralist politics and problematize the notion of nationalism as operating through a process of exclusion by privileging a white Anglo-Canadian norm. This system of exclusion complicates further the process of (im)migration, therefore, I explore the psychological and 'unhomely' experience of displacement as expressed visually through artistic practice. Furthermore, as a means of addressing multiculturalism and (im)migration, I acknowledge the need for more global modes of thinking, in proposing reconceptualizations of the notions home and nation that favour mobility, hybridity, and change over stable, static and pure definitions that sustain exclusionary politics.

The city of Guelph, an element within one of the largest conurbations in North America, the Greater Toronto Area/Greater Golden Horseshoe, is utilized as a metonym of a more general problematic. Certain narratives, logics and instrumental rationalities inform the production of this sprawling polycentric agglomeration forming an almost continuous urban and industrially developed area. Spaces and things within the built landscape, iconic, tropic forms and definitions, recurring presences or absences and 'symptomatic' silences within media and public debate provide a means for addressing discursive productions of Nature and identity in a mapping of the present. This materialist analysis addresses the exchanges and relationships occurring beneath and behind the city's surfaces; the nature and dynamics of the socio-ecological inter-play made manifest by urbanized landscapes and the city's metabolism. Artefacts that involve an engineering of material provide rubrics for considering questions attending spaces, representations, and practices related to urbanization. The basis and topographic implications of meta-schemes created to plan and organize the city, from those of the Canada Company to current Ontario Provincial legislation, is examined. Topography is considered as a material organization within a strategic system employing cybernetic apparatuses and reproductions, consisting of texts/artefacts enrolled into structures of political economy. Intertwining natural, cultural and technological systems, Guelph reveals a practiced urban geography that is a condition and translation of relations effected by global capitalism. The built environment involves conflations of object, image and symbolic space, their practices and principles. Institutional practices and historical relations here shape and impinge upon the biophysical ground. Boundaries and the presences and absences entailed are structured, organized a

Resumen
Making Home(s) in Displacement critically rethinks the relationship between home and displacement from a spatial, material, and architectural perspective. Recent scholarship in the social sciences has investigated how migrants and refugees create and reproduce home under new conditions, thereby unpacking the seemingly contradictory positions of making a home and overcoming its loss. Yet, making home(s) in displacement is also a spatial practice, one which intrinsically relates to the fabrication of the built environment worldwide. Conceptually the book is divided along four spatial sites, referred to as camp, shelter, city, and house, which are approached with a multitude of perspectives ranging from urban planning and architecture to anthropology, geography, philosophy, gender studies, and urban history, all with a common focus on space and spatiality. By articulating everyday homemaking experiences of migrants and refugees as spatial practices in a variety of geopolitical and historical contexts, this edited volume adds a novel perspective to the existing interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of home and displacement. It equally intends to broaden the canon of architectural histories and theories by including migrants' and refugees' spatial agencies and place-making practices to its annals. By highlighting the political in the spatial, and vice versa, this volume sets out to decentralise and decolonise current definitions of home and displacement, striving for a more pluralistic outlook on the idea of home.

Resumen
Two-stroke engines continue to dominate the small engine market based on cost and simplicity, though companies have incorporated small four-stroke engines into handheld equipment. On the other end of the displacement spectrum, two-stroke natural gas engines are common in large-bore applications within the natural gas compression industry. Nearly 60% of homes utilize natural gas and could therefore benefit from its use as fuel for decentralized power generation. Such use for home applications does not require significant investment in infrastructure, which has limited its penetration into the transportation sector. Companies already offer back-up power generation systems for home use fueled by either natural gas or propane. These systems are often cost prohibitive and rely on four-stroke engines. The ultimate goal is to apply advanced technologies, such as direct fuel injection, to improve efficiency of small two-stroke engines. To establish a baseline, researchers developed a micro-engine test facility to examine effects of ignition timing, compression ratio, and intake and exhaust systems on efficiency and combustion stability. This research focuses on an air-cooled, spark-ignited, two-stroke engine converted to operate on natural gas. In addition to fuel conversion, an electronic ignition system replaced the stock magneto driven coil. The added trigger wheel provided a signal for control of ignition and injection timing, and for in-cylinder pressure time alignment. Engine displacement was 29-cc with a bore and stroke of 35 mm and 30 mm. Tests were performed on gasoline and a natural gas blend at an engine speed of 5400 RPM. Fuel flow was adjusted for each case to produce maximum brake torque. Two different fuel delivery methods were tested for natural gas — a mass flow controller and an electronic port fuel injector. Tests examined the effects of two compression ratios for spark timings of 15, 20, 25, and 30 CAD BTDC. Fumigation and port injection decreased efficiency compared to gasoline by 24 and 32%, respectively. Brake power also decreased by 64 and 65% on average. A similar trend occurred for delivery ratio due to the volume of fresh air displaced by natural gas. Delivery ratio of fumigation and port injection decreased compared to gasoline by 12 and 27%, respectively. The coefficient of variation in indicated mean effective pressure varied from six to 27% over compression ratio and ignition timing sweeps.

Resumen
Take home lab equipment and hands-on learning tools are still in demand for control theory and vibrations courses. The existing equipment are extremely expensive and require wide lab space. The aim of this research is to build vibratory mechanical system that is compact, modular and small scale so that each student can work on their setup and take it home if necessary. For this purpose, in this study, a semi-compliant mechanism is designed to be utilized in systems control and vibrations courses which would enhance the understanding of students by using experimental demonstration of the theoretical systems. The superiorities of the design over commercially available equipment are their low cost and simplicity. A parallel arm mechanism consisting of several flexible links that can be attached at different points on the slider is designed, finite element analysis (FEA) is performed in Solidworks, and the flexible beams are 3D printed using polyactic acid (PLA) and Polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified (PETG) filaments. Different configurations of the mechanism are explored by changing the number of flexible beams attached to the slider. The mathematical model of the proposed mechanism can be represented by a single mass and multiple springs in parallel. Since mass is a known property, the equivalent stiffness can be experimentally found from the frequency analysis of free response. For this purpose, a PCB model tri-axial accelerometer is attached to the slider and the equations of motion are derived from the analysis of frequency characteristics of the complaint dual arm mechanism for each configuration. System properties including the equivalent friction are obtained from the acceleration vs time data using logarithmic decrement. The forced response is studied by attaching a load to the mass through a pulley system. The load deflection curve is obtained experimentally from LabVIEW. Since the system parameters are obtained from the free response, Matlab Simulink model outputs for the same initial displacement and force input are verified with the experimental data.

Resumen
Some years ago, in 1975, I presented a paper and a slide show at an earlier sailing yacht symposium in Annapolis. The subject was a four-year, 28,000 mile cruise I had made in the years 1965 - 1968 most of the way around the world: Hawaii and the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia's Barrier Reef, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, including the Greek Islands, an Atlantic crossing to Barbados from the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, and home to the Chesapeake. The paper I wrote then was entitled "Extended Cruising: An Overview" and contained sketches and data from my logs. It was same 55 pages long and talked about many facets of cruising from my vantage point, primarily as seen from the decks of Mamari, the 28 foot ketch I had bought in New Zealand. Lest Mamari 's size appear too small, which perhaps would make me seen heroic, recognize that in displacement and accomodations Mamari was the equivalent of a 33 foot boat. To dispel one other misconception, be advised that I normally sailed with a crew of two, sometimes more, and only sailed two legs single-handed, of about 500 miles each, one from Tonga to Fiji in the Pacific, the other in the Gulf of Suez and from Port Said to the Greek Islands. The 1975 paper reflected my background as a naval architect, combined with my experience as a sailor. I told of things I learned from others. I analyzed log data, presented photographs, drawings and tables, and wrote a series of "yarns" such as sailors spin about their travels. The paper is touched with a flavor of the sea, a flavor of talk over run or coffee in a snug anchorage or on a shared night watch. That 1975 paper makes good reading, and much of the information is still valid. It could be reprinted and if there is enough interest l will do so (contact me). This present paper is a brief look at my experiences on a series of sailing trips, but in particular a one year voyage in a 37 foot yawl from Turkey to the Chesapeake via the West Indies in 1980-81. The paper answers the question posed at the 1975 symposium, would I do the trip again? Then, I thought so, but could not be sure, now my reply is, "of course."
