Resumen
The Hittite documentation concerning the Land of Aštata on the Euphrates, with Emar as capital, can now be better evaluated thanks to a more precise chronological order of the documentation from Emar (1400–1180b.c.). Hittite rule did not exercise any religious imperialism, on the contrary, it was Mursili ii who transferred to Hattusa some Aštata cults for the Syrian goddess Išḫara. He did not refrain from calling to his court priests from Emar in order to celebrate the proper rites to the goddess in an emergency. The king of Karkamiš, who exercised Hittite control over Emar, sent there one of his diviners to enquire through oracles if the local gods were in favour of his travelling to the city. A reorganization of cults promoted by Tuthaliya iv was at the origin of the introduction in Emar of a liturgy for some Hittite gods. This was not a superimposition of a theological organized pantheon over the local gods, but personal gods of the king; their cult was committed to the local family of diviners in charge of the cults of the city, with which the Hittites maintained close relations. Apparently, Hittite religion never deeply penetrated Emar society. A group of seals used by some Emariotes, however, presents the same iconographies as Hittite seals, with gods of the Hittite pantheon, an evidence of adhesion to the Hittite rule.

Resumen
We analyse the eigenvalue and eigenvector structure of the flip-flop quantum walk on regular graphs, explicitly demonstrating how it is quadratically faster than the classical random walk. Then we use it in a controlled spatial search algorithm with multiple target states, and determine the oracle complexity as a function of the spectral gap and the number of target states. The oracle complexity is optimal as a function of the graph size and the number of target states, when the spectral gap of the adjacency matrix is $\Theta(1)$. It is also optimal for spatial search on D>4 dimensional hypercubic lattices. Otherwise it matches the best result available in the literature, with a much simpler algorithm. Our results also yield bounds on the classical hitting time of random walks on regular graphs, which may be of independent interest.

Resumen
We examine the problem of smoothed online optimization, where a decision maker must sequentially choose points in a normed vector space to minimize the sum of per-round, non-convex hitting costs and the costs of switching decisions between rounds. The decision maker has access to a black-box oracle, such as a machine learning model, that provides untrusted and potentially inaccurate predictions of the optimal decision in each round. The goal of the decision maker is to exploit the predictions if they are accurate, while guaranteeing performance that is not much worse than the hindsight optimal sequence of decisions, even when predictions are inaccurate. We impose the standard assumption that hitting costs are globally α-polyhedral. We propose a novel algorithm, Adaptive Online Switching (AOS), and prove that, for a large set of feasible δ > 0, it is (1+δ)-competitive if predictions are perfect, while also maintaining a uniformly bounded competitive ratio of 2~O (1/(α δ)) even when predictions are adversarial. Further, we prove that this trade-off is necessary and nearly optimal in the sense that any deterministic algorithm which is (1+δ)-competitive if predictions are perfect must be at least 2~Ω (1/(α δ)) -competitive when predictions are inaccurate. In fact, we observe a unique threshold-type behavior in this trade-off: if δ is not in the set of feasible options, then no algorithm is simultaneously (1 + δ)-competitive if predictions are perfect and ζ-competitive when predictions are inaccurate for any ζ < ∞. Furthermore, we discuss that memory is crucial in AOS by proving that any algorithm that does not use memory cannot benefit from predictions. We complement our theoretical results by a numerical study on a microgrid application.

Resumen
We prove that AM (and hence Graph Nonisomorphism) is in NP<br />if for some epsilon > 0, some language in NE intersection coNE requires nondeterministic<br />circuits of size 2^(epsilon n). This improves recent results of Arvind<br />and K¨obler and of Klivans and Van Melkebeek who proved the same<br />conclusion, but under stronger hardness assumptions, namely, either<br />the existence of a language in NE intersection coNE which cannot be approximated<br />by nondeterministic circuits of size less than 2^(epsilon n) or the existence<br />of a language in NE intersection coNE which requires oracle circuits of size 2^(epsilon n)<br />with oracle gates for SAT (satisfiability).<br />The previous results on derandomizing AM were based on pseudorandom<br />generators. In contrast, our approach is based on a strengthening<br />of Andreev, Clementi and Rolim's hitting set approach to derandomization.<br />As a spin-off, we show that this approach is strong enough<br />to give an easy (if the existence of explicit dispersers can be assumed<br />known) proof of the following implication: For some epsilon > 0, if there is<br />a language in E which requires nondeterministic circuits of size 2^(epsilon n),<br />then P=BPP. This differs from Impagliazzo and Wigderson's theorem<br />"only" by replacing deterministic circuits with nondeterministic<br />ones.

In the Ancient Near East the omens were considered to be messages from the gods. The Hittite solicited omens included extispicy, augury, “Bed” oracles, “Hurri”-bird oracles, “Snake” oracles and KIN oracles. Many studies explain how the different divination systems worked, however the KIN oracle frame still remains difficult to understand in all of its aspects. The KIN oracle system and its structure is the main topic of my PhD research project at the University of Florence (Dottorato in Studi Storici, XXX ciclo) whose title is “Il sistema mantico ittita KIN”. (Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Giulia Torri, Prof. Dr. Joost Hazenbos). The practical aspects of the KIN investigation system are deeply examined through the analysis of oracular operations attested in the Hittite sources (in particular CTH 572, 577, 578, 580, 582) in order to clarify its complex symbolic structure. In addition, my research focuses on other aspects such as the role played by the female practitioner MUNUS ŠU.GI as well as the deities mentioned in the KIN divinations.

Resumen
Chapter 6 looks at the religious traditon of the W. Anatolia state of Arzawa and its religon to Greek religion. The main evidence for Arzawan religious is a group of plague- and purufcation- rituals, many of them designed for military use. The authors of the rituals are said to be augurs, which shows that augury/bird-oracles were part of the procedure. In the chapter I explore parallels with Greek religion, e.g. a plague ritual in Homer, the scapegoat- (pharmakos-) rituals of Ionia and Greek bird-oracles.
