Texto completoAlthough teenagers are taught to never judge a book by its cover, studies have shown that many teens do in fact make their reading decisions based on a book’s cover art (Jones, 2007; Yampbell, 2009). In this context, I considered it important to conduct a visual analysis of young adult book covers to determine trends in terms of imagery, colours and typography. To do so, I analyzed a selection of 50 books drawn from the list put out in 2014 by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) naming the Best Fiction for Young Adults, and I reached some interesting conclusions. In terms of imagery, the human body is the most predominant motif, in particular the fragmented body with the focus on the upper part of body, such as the face and the eyes. Including body pictures in a book cover is an effective marketing strategy since teenagers tend to create a personal relationship with protagonists. However, this practice can also objectify the human body and strengthen the idea that it can be manipulated (as it is, both by the designer and the reader). In terms of colours, it was hard to establish a trend since colour seems to be used at random in the book covers analyzed. However, it was possible to determine that black is by far the most used colour. Black can make a cover appear sleek and sophisticated and also makes the book appealing to both male and female readers because black is liked by both sexes. Lastly, in terms of typography, I determined that sans serif typefaces are the most used. Although decorative typefaces are the ones generally used in book covers, the cleanness, simplicity and apparent neutrality of a sans serif type proves to be the best choice for these covers as it creates a balance with the emotionalizing nature of its images and colours.

Texto completoDigital books are bringing changes to the publishing marketplace, to the book circuit and to publishing itself. New leading actors are entering the scene, and the publisher, who became preeminent as of the 19th century, faces a challenge to his role. The objective of this research is to study the book publisher\'s role. To this end, it presents the conception of a book along history and its role in society. It makes an attempt to define the contours of the History book and provides a general dimension of the book market in Brazil and in the world. The field work consists of non-oriented interviews with 12 Brazilian and foreign book professionals. The conclusions show that we are currently living in the era of the digital incunables, in which there are some experiments but little certainty as to how the book of the future will be.

Texto completoThe thesis addresses the diffusion of the Marxist literature in Brazil during the 1940s in the period of reorganisation and and legitimacy of the PCB (Communist Brazilian Party), which begins with the Second National Conference of the party in August 1943 (Mantiqueira Conference) and goes on until de repeal of the communist parliamentarians by the Dutra government in January 1948. It regards understanding this diffusion through the performance of the editor José Calvino Filho and the Editorial Calvino Limitada, connected to PCB. For that, the catalogues of the aforementioned publishing company and its advertising have been analysed, as well as articles by the editor printed in the newspapers of the time, and the books edited by him. Through this analysis it is intended to comprehend the role of the partys editions in its reorganisation and in the conformation of the Brazilian communist movement of the time, taking into account the works of Marxist features published by Calvino Filho in these years, their nature (doctrinaire, political, of party organisation, working literature, analysis over socialist Russia, memories, etc), the level of production of the publishing company through the number of publications, and the relationship between the type of published works and the political line adopted by the party in this moment.

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis is to understand the link between the extraordinary volume of sales of scholarly works (classical literature, philosophy and theater) in newsstands and the editorial, advertising and distributive structure of a large communication company. To study the question, we established: 1) the social-historical conditions that allowed the growth of a small publishing house, founded by foreigners in the city of São Paulo, in the late 1940s; 2) the material and textual characteristics of the publications and their intrinsic relation as conditioning of the public profile to which they were destined; 3) the role of Editora Abril advertising machine and the ability to design and disseminate promotional speeches with effective persuasive content for specific segments of consumers; 4) the strategies of editorial distribution through newsstands, a distinct channel from the legitimate space of bookstores. It is concluded that, having in perspective an unfamiliar audience with this type of cultural product; a country with a poor production structure for book printing; an editorial sector with low average circulation; and the reduced habit of reading among the population, the established aspects were in line with each other so as to enable the high phenomenon of \"high culture\" books to be produced and sold.

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis is to analyze the political publishing houses actions in Portugal between 1968 and 1980. Our particular focus is the political, cultural and ideological role of these publishing houses in the process of profound changes that Portugal went through that period. In order to achieve these goals, I have sought: a) to identify the main publishing houses and their political connections; b) to make a census of the political oeuvres published in that period; c) to identify people and organization that were in charge of the publishing houses. Taking in consideration the sources and data collected, I examine how these publishers acted, and which were their political, ideological and business motivations. I also analyze how they organize the publishing houses from a intellectual and commercial perspective, as well as how was the weight of the political connections in the everyday life of the publishing houses. Chronologically, my investigation starts in 1968, when the Dictator Salazar, due health reasons, was replaced by Marcelo Caetano. The final date of my research is 1980, when a first rightwing government is formed after the end of the dictatorship in April 25, 1974. In short, my thesis demonstrates that at least 137 publishing houses edited books with clear political features in Portugal between 1968 and 1980. In this period 4,600 different political titles were published. This thesis presents synthetic studies about 106 publishing of these. My argument is that those publishing houses conformed what we can call political publishing era in Portugal. By realizing an editorial work that directly combined political activism and editorial action, theses publishing houses and their publishers acted with a clear political intention of social intervention. In this sense they become important and active social actors in the Portuguese political process in the final period of the dictatorship and beginning of the democratization years.
Meizel, Laureline. "Inventer le livre illustré par la photographie en France : 1867-1897". Thesis, Paris 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA01H045.
Texto completoThis thesis is about the relationship between books and photography in France during the last three decades of the 19th century. It reveals what was at stake in this specific association for the diverse actors involved in its creation. Articulating multiple issues, a new object was gradually invented: the photographically illustrated book, that is a book discursively produced through combining texts and photographic images between its covers, if not on the very pages themselves. To this end, the thesis charts the boundaries and tendencies of the average production of photographically illustrated books between 1867 and 1897, building a corpus that reflects its extent and its ambitions. Through a systemic analysis, it demonstrates that books were neither the breeding grounds nor the main sites nor the main vehicles for the dissemination of photographic images in 19th century France. By showing the extreme diversity of the production, it argues that books have constituted an experimental ground where modalities of texts’ and photographic images’ associations were tested. Through this process, authors and editors progressively defined what would become the specific characteristics of photographic images as means available for illustration. Allowing publishers and printers to reaffirm their dominant position in the world of publishing, the processes of this appropriation is particular because of the very low involvement of the photographic community itself. Therefore, the thesis proposes a periodization of the links of photographers to the book, analysing its role in the statutory claims they made through time

Abstract: This thesis brings new perspectives on Monteiro Lobato?s publishing activities between 1918 and 1925, the period when he was at the head of publishing enterprises widely considered as revolutionary in Brazil?s history of book. Monteiro Lobato is regarded as a revolutionary publisher, among other reasons, for establishing a nationwide book distribution network and for paying high copyright rates. This thesis presents recently discovered documents regarding these publishing companies, and through this material analyzes in which way Lobato took publishing practices that were already known and in use at his time, changing their shape or adapting them in order to suit his companies needs and goals. This thesis investigates the development of Brazilian author and publisher roles, from the early 1800s until the first decades of the 20th century, focusing on the different attributes each author or publisher adopts as time evolves. This thesis also sustains that intellectuals played a fundamental role on birth and development of Lobato's nationwide book distribution network. Finally, publishing contracts that were unknown until this moment are transcribed and analyzed in order to present new data and hypotheses regarding copyright payments made by this publishers companies

Texto completoEven though international interconnectedness and globalization evoke the idea of being able to produce and receive knowledge equally all over the world, the maps of knowledge are unevenly distributed on a global scale. My dissertation project analyses this phenomenon by examining the trilateral, multidimensional transfer of African academic literature to Germany and France since the 1950s.The research interest of this project is to determine and organize the entire spectrum of publications from the social sciences and the humanities written by African authors and published in German and French publishing houses. The quantitative analysis on a macro level is based on already existing qualitative studies in the field. The quantitative analysis and the classification of the results give valuable knowledge about continuities and discontinuities in the publication of African academic literature over the span of six decades (1950-2012). The research further examines and elaborates upon geographical, thematic, and temporal profiles of the publishing houses as well as their personal, editorial, and linguistic preferences. By means of collecting, filtering, processing, and visualizing the data, it is possible to find out what kind of “academic Africa” has finally reached the two national book markets. This approach helps to identify new hypotheses and interpretations concerning the circulation of African knowledge in general through the specific example of academic literature from the social sciences and the humanities. Providing important theoretical and practical approaches for this project, the concept of cultural transfers is an established approach for analysing cultural border crossings between countries and regions. The methodological approach combines different methods and, for the data processing, includes examples from the digital humanities to realize an all-embracing reconstruction of the entire transfer process in both a quantitative and qualitative sense

The Internet has been a disruptive force for many industries, but perhaps none more so than in the publishing business. While many segments of the publishing industry have made attempts to use the Internet to augment or replace existing revenue sources, none has done as little with the Internet as book publishers. This thesis will examine the computer book niche of the publishing business, review various Internet publishing models that have been employed to date, and outline opportunities and challenges that computer book publishers should consider to stay viable in the Internet age. An analysis of various Internet publishing business models will be covered along with a discussion of how Internet publishing can facilitate better methods and processes for developing content.
