Resumen
This review article critically surveys the following literature by placing it under the historiographical banner of ‘the history of the brain and mind sciences’: Fernando Vidal and Francisco Ortega, Being Brains: Making the Cerebral Subject (New York: Fordham University Press, 2017); Katja Guenther, Localization and its Discontents: A Genealogy of Psychoanalysis & the Neuro Disciplines (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2015); Stephen Casper and Delia Gavrus (eds), The History of the Brain and Mind Sciences: Technique, Technology, Therapy (Rochester: University of Rochester Press, 2017); Jonna Brenninkmeijer, Neurotechnologies of the Self: Mind, Brain and Subjectivity (London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). This framework highlights contemporary attempts to historicize the integrative project of neuroscience and set the correct limits to interdisciplinary collaboration. While attempts to critically engage with the ‘neuro’ rhetoric of contemporary neuroscientists can seem at odds with historians seeking to write the history of neuroscience from the margins, it is argued that together these two projects represent a positive historiographical direction for the history of the neurosciences after the decade of the brain.

Resumen
Following two previous volumes on peasants’ relationship to land control, governmental structures, and self-determination resulting from an international project funded by the Norwegian Research Council (2004‐2007), this collection of essays poses a challenge to once prevalent historiographical interpretations of a supposed Scandinavian – and particularly Norwegian – condition, in which agricultural laborers in the northern periphery purportedly enjoyed greater degrees of land ownership, control of resources, and political capital within the local milieu than their contemporaries to the South. To that end, the editors have developed a geographical, more narrowly a topographical and environmental, framework for a comparison between Norway and the West Norse areas of settlement (with a smaller role played by Denmark and Sweden when possible), on the one hand, and the Eastern Alpine region (primarily Tyrol and Switzerland with additional counterexamples in Lower Austria, southern Germany, and elsewhere in Central Europe), on the other. After an introductory chapter outlining the historiographical background and scope of the project, the first part spans three chapters on comparative local examinations of slavery and degrees of freedom, types of land ownership and control, and forms of local political participation, followed by a conclusion; the second offers four chapters on the national historiographical traditions challenged by the comparative studies in the first part and subsequently revised on a local basis here, namely in Norway, Tyrol, various regions of Germany, and Switzerland. (On an organizational note, the table of contents lists four ‘parts,’ the first of which contains only the introduction, while the fourth comprises what are strangely labelled appendices.)

Lest We Forget, my current research project at Concordia University, critically analyses the history of queer theatre and performance as it intersects with the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Canada. Stretching over three decades and taking the country's bilingualism into consideration, its objectives are to study the aesthetic variety and political complexity of plays and performances that attend to the epidemic and to identify the multiple challenges faced by theatre artists and activists. Furthermore, the project explores the methodological and historiographical challenges when studying HIV/AIDS theatre and performance in a Canadian context.

Resumen
In this historiographical article we analyse the three sources from which historians obtain their material for the research of the Bahurutshe (a subgroup of the Sotho-Tswana of South Africa) in the precolonial era: oral tradition, archaeological studies of Iron Age sites, and the oldest written accounts by European visitors to the Marico. We show that because the Batswana were non-literate societies before the nineteenth century, the study of their early history is a multidisciplinary project requiring the inputs of anthropologists, archaeologists and linguists. To produce a cohesive narrative of African precolonial history is an arduous task, but the history of precolonial African societies has major significance in the bigger picture of the (South) African past and informs ongoing discourses about the history of the region. We argue that Hurutshe history fits into the broader pattern of South African history and has relevance for the understanding of current debates around controversial issues such as ethnicity and land claims.

Resumen
AbstractIn the era of the “Sunnī Revival” and the couple of centuries following, scholars engaged in a large historiographical project aimed at rehabilitating the reputation of the Umayyad dynasty and Syria’s role in the early Islamic narrative. One of Ibn Kathīr’s historiographical missions in his history Kitāb al-Bidāya wa-l-nihāya was specifically the defense of the Companions of the Prophet. As such, the narrative of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib required some manipulation to answer Shīʿī narratives that cast some of the most important Companions (especially those associated with the Umayyads and Syria) in a rebellious light. This article explores the literary-narrative strategies Ibn Kathīr employs to alter the narrative so as to counteract the implications of the pro-ʿAlīd versions of the story he found in his sources, especially al-Ṭabarī’s Taʾrīkh al-Rusul wa-l-mulūk.

Resumen
In this article I critically engage the Duke theologians of race—Carter, Jennings, and Bantam—devoting attention especially to Jennings. While appreciating and acknowledging the significance of these projects, I critique Jennings’s selective historiography and suggest that engaging the Anglo-American early modern supersessionist theologies of culture and race would have benefitted Jennings’ project. Then I trace out some implications of Jennings’s call to re-engage Israel and examine how his idealized vision of “submersion and in submission to another’s cultural realities” affects the notion of conversion theologically. As an Asian-American historical theologian, I argue that race is not and should no longer be looked upon as a black-white binary reality. In conclusion, I call for a historiographical fine-tuning of these theologies of race.

Resumen
The unrealized project of the State Archives building (1922) is one of the earliest works of the prominent architect and university professor at the Technical Faculty in Belgrade, Dimitrije M. Leko. The project stands as an embodiment of the high-standard academic education of the architect, as well as his affectations and skill in designing monumental public buildings, which would come to have a deep impact on the Yugoslav architectural scene. As a witness to the gradual formation of the architect's particular authorial expression, the project is of great importance to a more complete understanding of his artistic opus. With a more detailed historiographical treatment, this paper strives to contribute to a more complete understanding of the complex history of the construction of the State Archives building, as well as to the genesis of Leko's own personal architectural style.

Gentry, Karen Lee. "The Forgiveness Project". Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_theses/81.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Forgiveness Project includes a critical introduction that defines the author’s approach to the short-short form as well as an explanation of how historiographical metafiction can work to memorialize. The first section contains primarily short-short stories that address the themes of motherhood, small tyrannies, happy liars, caregiving and the clichés of grief. A collection of linked short stories follows, revolving around elusive forgiveness. On the night of July 17, 1977, Juanita Lee, a bridge tender in South Florida, was abducted by two men and executed in the Everglades to silence her opposition to the demolition of an Intracoastal Waterway bridge. Twenty-two years later her daughter, Jill, now a Washington D.C. lobbyist who views the world through the cynical lens of her life’s work, is confronted with a plea for forgiveness via an organization called “The Forgiveness Project,” representing one of her mother’s killers.

This thesis studies videogame design as an « historiographical operation » (« opération historiographique »). It approaches a work of selection, appropriation and shaping of historical sources set within a « development environment circumscribed by specific determinations ». To study the conception of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed : Freedom Cry we use the concept of ludoformation. We anchor our research questions in both history and videogame studies. Our thesis supports that the designers’ documentation practices feed an « historiographical project » at the heart of videogame design, involving both a project of ludic mediation (communicating the object’s gameplay) and one of historical mediation (representing the past). We present in which cases the historical mediation serves the ludic mediation, that is to say, how representations of the past are used to communicate the game’s rules, objectives and mechanics. We then show how the ludic mediation serves the historical mediation, that is how designers, while summoning historical sources in the creative process, are adopting practices revealing of a critical distance as well as a reflexion on the specificity of the ludic engagement of the player’s engagement with the past

Precocious son of Portuguese modernism, Jaime Cortesão (1884- 1960) appears in the contemporary scenery assuming a typical role inside the modernity, the intellectual figure. In spite of graduating in Medicine firstly and with a distinguished insertion on the literary environment of his time, he dedicated most of his life to Historical studies. His works regarding medieval and modern Portugal, territorial expansion, colonization, among others subjects, have contributed to an Atlantic view and a global perspective of the Portuguese Seaborn Empire. This study aims to reconstruct some aspects of his entrance in Portuguese cultural life and politics during the rise of the First Republic in 1910, exploring components of Cortesão\'s personal trajectory and his fight against a positivist/naturalist view of the historic genius figure. Which has culminated in his distinctive participation of the Seara Nova group and consequent activism in the resistance against Portuguese Dictatorship and Salazar\'s Government. Then, his initial production is recapitulated in order to understand the meaning of his historiographic project which aimed the restoring of a national consciousness, highlighting the main resources mobilized by the author forward the institutionalization of History, as a disciplinary field. Thus, this study aims to elucidate how the approximation with other social studies, some trends of contemporary historiography, and, mostly, Geographys incorporation, would add to his historiographical knowledge and making. These elements would culminate in his work of maturity and so revealing an unique interpretation of making of Brazil, also result of his long period of exile and intellectual exchange in this country.

Resumen
In order to provide a balanced original exposition of the early period of Husserl’s philosophy, first his biography is surveyed, including the historiographical trends that influenced the scholarly views of the origins of Husserl’s phenomenological philosophy. Husserl’s development prior to the Logical Investigations is reconstructed by virtue of both his published juvenilia and the transformations of his underlying project of explaining (mathematical) inauthenticity. Husserl’s phenomenological breakthrough in the Logical Investigations is presented in a historical-genetic way, considering its influence on the Munich and Göttingen phenomenologists and the idealism–realism debate. Besides relying on a wide and modern textual basis, special attention is paid to the obvious or inconspicuous elements that connect the beginnings of Husserl’s philosophy to his mature transcendental phenomenology, as well as to those roots of his philosophy that extend beyond the confines of the School of Brentano.

Resumen
The final chapter addresses Richard Niccols’s ghost complaint collection, A Winter Nights Vision, and the edition to which it was appended in 1610. It reflects on the changed political and literary landscape within which Niccols situates his new Mirror, and considers potential explanations for the collection’s declining popularity. Niccols made substantial editorial changes, perpetuating the narrative of imperfection which had characterized its Elizabethan evolution. Using Niccols’s wider oeuvre and late Elizabethan influences to reconstruct a picture of his ethical and aesthetic priorities, this chapter presents the Jacobean revisions to the text as part of a coherent political project. Propounding the militant Protestantism of the Jacobean Spenserians, Niccols is seen to mobilize a monumental Elizabethan publication to reinforce his dissatisfaction with James I’s regime. Attention to Niccols’s revisions also shows his clear investment in the shoring up of historiographical stability, even as he refashions the text to suit his oppositional agenda.

Resumen
This collection presents two sets of lectures that Woodward delivered at mid-century, LSU's Fleming Lectures in 1951 and Cornell's Messenger Lectures in 1964 along with one lecture taken from Yale’s Storrs Lectures in 1969. These lectures reflect Woodward's life-long interest in exploring the contours and limits of nineteenth-century liberalism. The editors draw on correspondence, Woodward's personal notes, and unpublished essays to chronicle his failed attempts to finish a much-awaited comprehensive history of Reconstruction, which he saw as the natural outgrowth of the Messenger Lectures. The letdown involving the latter project is all the more significant given that he had come to imagine the book as a companion to the Origins of the New South, one of the most lasting pieces of scholarship in the field. The Introduction focuses on the antebellum and Reconstruction periods, situating them in the context of mid-twentieth century historiographical debates. These reprinted lectures offer readers new perspectives on one of the most important authorities on the history of the late nineteenth and twentieth-century South.

Resumen
Revolutionary Worlds looks at the Indonesian revolution (1945-1949) from a local and regional perspective. With seventeen contributions, Indonesian and Dutch researchers bring to life the revolutionary world from widely differing perspectives. The authors explain how Indonesian, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian civilians, fighters, farmers and officials experienced and shaped the often volatile period between 1945 and 1950. The book focuses on different ideas of independence, survival strategies, mobilization, minorities, contestation of authority and the use of force against the backdrop of Indonesian and Dutch authorities’ efforts to gain or maintain control. Bringing together two national historiographical traditions which have long remained largely separate, Revolutionary Worlds is the result of a collaboration between the Indonesian research project Proklamasi Kemerdekaan, Revolusi dan Perang di Indonesia ('Proclamation of Independence, Revolution and War in Indonesia', Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta) and the Dutch research group of the Regional Studies project, under the umbrella of the research programme Independence, Decolonization, Violence and War in Indonesia, 1945-1950. The authors of this book – Taufik Ahmad, Galuh Ambar Sasi, Maarten van der Bent, Martijn Eickhoff, Farabi Fakih, Roel Frakking, Apriani Harahap, Anne-Lot Hoek, Sarkawi B. Resumen
The interface of identity construction practices and the role of knowledge of the past in that continual process manifests itself in contemporary Hindu-Muslim relations and political governance. Presenting' the Past studies the religious, cultural, sociological, and ideological dimensions of the Hindutva historiographical project going back and forth into the realms of history, myth, socialization, and governance. Taking Ram' and the division of the Indian society into Rambhakts (Ram devotees) and non-Rambhakts as the core, Udayakumar proceeds by reading the closely related set of texts: the Ramayana, Ramarajya (State of Ram) imageries in political discourses, the Babri Masjid/Ramjanmabhumi controversy in Ayhodhya and the Ramraksha governance of the BJP-led government in New Delhi. With analysis of events dating to the 1920s and the establishment of Muslim separatism and Hindu fundamentalism, extending to the 1990s when the Sangh Parivar's narrative of national history' reached its pinnacle with the demolition of the Babri Masjid and the attainment of state power, and terminating in 2004 when the BJP lost power and prominence at the center, this illuminating discourse is readily accessible to students and scholars of contemporary Indian politics and society.

This chapter explores the activities of the Race Relations Committee, which was established in 1943 and remained after World War II. The new committee created several integrated projects (including housing efforts and a work camp) as well as interracial projects such as minority hiring efforts and a university lectureship program. By 1950, Quakers in the AFSC had thus developed an indirect, Friendly approach to interracial relations that while still working to correct individual ignorance now saw the need to reform society as well. Understanding the details of that approach and how Quakers arrived at it provides important insights into Quakers and race in the first half of the twentieth century. It also helps to fill in the historiographical gap concerning the racial activism of Quakers between their nineteenth-century efforts at reform and their participation in the Civil Rights Movement that blossomed in the 1950s and beyond.

The Persian historiographical tradition imposed a good deal of restriction on the premodern projects of genealogy. Authors in the service of the nascent states of the sixteenth century often ran against the discursive limits of this canon. The same applied to early European orientalists and historians of these empires such as Mountstuart Elphinstone, William Erskine, and John Leyden who often followed career paths similar to their Indo-Persian forerunners, but who transmitted the Persian chronicle conventions into notions of ethnicity that were of importance to the early British imperial vision of the past. The histories of these empires are now understood in these terms.

Resumen
The chapter examines Thucydides’ account of the interwar years. The work discusses its introductory sections (5.25–26), which set forth the thesis of the unity of the war, and sequentially considers the crisis of Spartan hegemony in the Peloponnesus from the Peace of Nicias to the Battle of Mantinea; the intervention of Athens in Peloponnesian issues and Alcibiades’ projects in the Peloponnesus; the events related to Melos; Alcibiades’ flight to Sparta after the scandal of the Herms, the importance of his advice to the enemy on the Sicilian expedition, and the occupation of Decelea. The chapter also considers the unusual narrative and historiographical features of Thucydides’ account in this part of his work, among which, in particular, is the inclusion of a large number of transcribed documents. These documents are discussed in the light of the debate on the possible incompleteness of Book 5.

Resumen
Medical research has been central to biomedicine in Africa for over a century, and Africa, along with other tropical areas, has been crucial to the development of medical science. At present, study populations in Africa participate in an increasing number of medical research projects and clinical trials, run by both public institutions and private companies. Global debates about the politics and ethics of this research are growing and local concerns are prompting calls for social studies of the “trial communities” produced by this scientific work. Drawing on rich, ethnographic and historiographic material, this volume represents the emergent field of anthropological inquiry that links Africanist ethnography to recent concerns with science, the state, and the culture of late capitalism in Africa.

Resumen
Through a revolutionary ethnographic approach that foregrounds storytelling and performance as alternative means of knowledge, this book explores shared ritual traditions between the Anlo-Ewe people of West Africa and their descendants, the Arará of Cuba, who were brought to the island in the transatlantic slave trade. The volume draws on two decades of research in four communities: Dzodze, Ghana; Adjodogou, Togo; and Perico and Agramonte, Cuba. In the ceremonies, oral narratives, and daily lives of individuals at each fieldsite, the authors not only identify shared attributes in religious expression across continents but also reveal lasting emotional, spiritual, and personal impacts in the communities whose ancestors were ripped from their homeland and enslaved. The authors layer historiographic data, interviews, and fieldnotes with artistic modes such as true fiction, memoir, and choreographed narrative, challenging the conventional nature of scholarship with insights gained from sensorial experience. Including reflections on the making of an art installation based on this research project, the volume challenges readers to imagine the potential of approaching fieldwork as artists. The authors argue that creative methods can convey truths deeper than facts, pointing to new possibilities for collaboration between scientists and artists with relevance to any discipline.

Resumen
Lists form a crucial part of early Islamic historiography: they provide the broad frameworks of organisation of the sources, and are ubiquitous in their content. Bernheimer’s contribution re-examines lists in early Islamic historiographical works as textual practice, that is, as a form of textual communication that is integral to scholarly writing and the creation of a historical narrative. Lists are not simply enumerations of people, events, or tax payments, but an important narrative strategy in the overall historiographic project of early Islam. Understanding lists as textual practice highlights their importance in the forging of a new cultural narrative and memory, and their function as a principal scholarly form. The chapter recapitulates how lists have thus far been understood in the scholarship, and offers some alternative perspectives, before two examples of lists in some of the main Arabic historiographical works of the ninth century ce are examined in more detail—lists of those who died in the battle of the Ḥarra, and the administrative lists for the reign of ʿAbd al-Malik.

Resumen
AbstractThe geoscientific knowledge of the territories of the Americas was at the core of colonizing projects and international disputes over these territories. The historical studies of various aspects of Earth sciences bring countless references. They have been present since the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in the writings of the Portuguese Jesuits or chroniclers. Latin America continues to participate in the historiographical production of Earth sciences at the international level, in tune with mainstream trends, but with varying intensity depending on each country’s specific contexts and intellectual traditions. New perspectives suggest counterpoints to the unidirectional views of the old diffusionist proposals in the History of Sciences. They emphasize that governments’ individual, professional, institutional, political, economic, scientific, and theoretical interests are not dissociated and are linked to rocks, fossils, soils, mineral and energy resources, and landscapes. There is much to be explored along with the perspective of circulation of ideas, practices, and objects, and scientific cooperation in the continental context, without losing the dimension that the phenomena associated with Earth sciences, due to their spatial and temporal dimensions, are not subordinated to geopolitical frontiers that, in Latin America and various regions of the world, as a result of colonizing processes, wars, and territorial disputes, have changed over time.

The introduction sets the historiographical and political stakes of narrating and analyzing Scott’s campaign for the Spanish origin of international law, drawing on current methodological discussions and the role of the concept of equality in our political discourse. It also explains the relation of the book with previous scholarship on Scott and literature on the rise of international legal networks in the Americas in the early twentieth century. Moreover, it elaborates on the reasons for the primarily descriptive style the text adopts and on certain related choices of language. The introduction ends with an outline of the structure of the book and of the individual chapters.

Resumen
The conclusion considers how the book’s central argument might impinge more broadly upon the widespread historiographical assumption that one can appropriately and coherently describe a distinctive “Baptist” identity during the English Revolution and Interregnum. The labels with which we describe the past inevitably presuppose and project an interpretation of that past. But these embedded interpretations are almost always implicit rather than explicit and often inherited from historiographical predecessors rather than chosen with intention and care. Religious labels often confuse rather than clarify, and it is not at all obvious that the labels affixed to mid-seventeenth-century “Baptists” have helped to clarify the self-identity of the men and women they purport to describe.

This introductory chapter defines the intellectual agenda of locating the medical, and explains its significance. It situates the volume as a platform for the traffic of ideas and approaches between the history of medicine as a sub-discipline and South Asian history, more generally. It sets out recent historiographical trajectories, examines the theoretical purchase of historical ontologies (as the methodological inspiration) for this project, and provides a brief outline of chapters in this collection.

Resumen
Abstract Chapter 1 focuses on the humanist historiographical current that identified historical truth with verisimilitude, defined as the quality of what is appropriate to and expected of the subjects of one’s narrative in accordance with their condition, social status, and overarching character. The chapter argues that authors such as Coluccio Salutati, Leonardo Bruni, and Pier Candido Decembrio used the notion of historical verisimilitude to tailor the classical topoi of history’s impartiality and utility to the needs of different geographical and political environments. Through verisimilitude, humanists could project an overall meaning of the events, whose exposition was considered the task of truthful historians and the standard of history’s utility and impartiality. Verisimilitude also functioned as a criterion to select relevant historical materials—a classical historiographical requirement that could easily be turned into an excuse to pass over unflattering facts. To demonstrate how Brunian historians navigated this gray area, the chapter investigates the boundaries they erected to distinguish between works whose verisimilar character was perceived as a conveyor of historical truth and works that, instead, used verisimilitude as a pretext for carrying out impartial—and hence untruthful—analyses.

Resumen
Considering the growing production and application of data in the era of digitalization, the objective of feminist historians to tell a story differently rather than telling a different story has acquired a new urgency. Today, there are a number of online projects that feature women’s achievements in film history. There is no doubt that databases such as the Women Film Pioneers Project offer a great deal of information on women workers in early cinema as well as additional references. Yet, this chapter makes the case that in order to foster new perspectives and advance our understanding of women’s influence in film culture, we need to further explore new forms of presenting historiographical research by taking advantage of digital tools and methods. Data visualizations can offer a productive approach for telling women’s achievements in early film industries while taking into account ambiguities, contingencies, and blind spots inherent to history.

An exploration of the distinguished and influential career of Gordon Barclay, an archaeologist who spent his career working for the government heritage agency in Scotland (Historic Scotland). This essay sets out the evolution of his approach to Scotland’s Neolithic period, from his earliest excavations at sites like North Mains henge and barrow, and Balfarg Riding School, through to later work under the banner of Scotland’s First Farmers Project. His historiographical approach which emerged towards the end of the 1990s is also discussed and contextualised. Barclay is one of the most significant figures in British Neolithic studies of the past four decades and this legacy is explored.

Resumen
The Presidios of Tuscany have received less historiographical attention than other fortified sites on the Mediterranean coast. In this context, it is worth mentioning a place unjustly forgotten: Porto Longone (Porto o Puerto Longón in Spanish), today’s Porto Azzurro, on the island of Elba. During the twenty years following the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, Longone was an isolated enclave, Philip V of Spain’s last stronghold in Italy, whose preservation depended on a frail diplomatic and military balance. Despite its fragile situation, the fortress would be of key importance in maintaining the network of contacts with Italy within the revanchist strategy of the Spanish Bourbon and obtaining intelligence from the territories controlled by the imperial forces of Charles VI. The king’s will to turn Longone into a powerful forward base meant that some of the most experienced military engineers of the newly created Spanish Royal Corps of Engineers were stationed there, such as Antonio Montaigut de la Perille, Pedro Coysevaux or Simón Poulet. The project for Longone detailed in the plans of 1722 and 1727 written by Coysevaux was comprehensive and addressed both fortifications like the bastions of Castellón, Toledo or Zúñiga and their advanced works as well as other constructions necessary to ensure the defence of the fortress and decent service conditions for its garrison: barracks, warehouses, powder magazines and water cisterns. The War of the Polish Succession would increase the weight of the stronghold as a base for operations in Italy. From 1735 onwards, Porto Longone would be cut off from the dominions of the kings of Spain, but the previous two decades attest to the effort put into its fortification and improvement, without which its conservation would probably have been more seriously challenged by the rivals of Philip V.

Resumen
Acting out Disease: How Patient Organizations Shaped Modern Medicine (ActDisease) explores the history of patient organizations in 20th century Europe. By combining traditional historiographic methods with text mining techniques, the project aims to shed light on how patient organizations co-constructed concepts of and management of disease. Part of the project is to digitize print sources and build a digital corpus for historical text mining. The corpus consists of periodical publications from selected British, French, German and Swedish patient organizations, a type of material that poses a number of challenges in scan quality, layout, and lack of consistency. This paper discusses the technical process of building the ActDisease corpus from digitizing patient organization periodicals to OCR post-processing. It touches upon the methodological questions and challenges of curating a corpus of fragmented and heterogeneous historical source material tailored to a specific project.

Resumen
This article analyzes the process of coastal landscape management in the Mexican tourist region from the transformation of the landscape of Punta de Mita. This peninsula is part of the interstate metropolitan zone of Puerto Vallarta - Bahía de Banderas, located between the State of Jalisco and State of Nayarit. It is one of three coastal metropolitan zones of Mexico. This research has a qualitative approach and adopts the concept of the landscape defined by the European Landscape Convention as “any part of the territory, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors” (Council of Europe, 2000). The units of analysis were the peninsular zone of Punta de Mita and the actors who participated in their transformation. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews with key informants selected using the snowball technique, qualitative observation, review of official documentary sources (plans, projects, reports) as well as historiographical and aerial photographs. The identification of the participation of each type of actor is highlighted in the transformation of the landscape: the State provides the land and enables for tourism investment; economic actors take ownership and monetize their aesthetic values; social actors are deprived of the use and enjoyment of the landscape. The symbols printed on the territory are mainly touristic and, in the second instance, natural whose conservation represents a point of agreement between the state and the residents.

Resumen
Studies on the recovery of the decorated surfaces of the architecture of the facades of the Cavallerizza and the Castle of San Giorgio in the Ducal Palace of MantuaThe contribution aims to present the path of knowledge on the external surfaces of the Courtyard of the Cavallerizza and the Castle of San Giorgio in Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, the subject of an upcoming conservation project. In particular, the results emerged through the autopsy and stratigraphic survey of areas selected by sample, relating to the technique of execution and the constituent materials of the finishes. From this survey, the characteristics of the original structure have been defined so as to have a clear relationship with respect to integration or degradation. At the same time, following specific evidence and to support the cognitive operations carried out in situ, in-depth diagnostic investigations were carried out in order to support and clarify the contents detected previously by interpreting the scientific data on the nature of the materials and the degradation present. The re-elaboration and critical analysis of the data acquired through various in-depth techniques, as well as providing indications for intervening on the causes of degradation, has supported the designers in the development of intervention methods and in the choice of the most suitable materials for conservation, based on the state of conservation of the nearby areas and the interfaces with the substrate. The scientific data have been compared with the historiographic information in order to have an objective comparison.
