Resumen
National design guides provide essential guidance for the design of building drainage systems, which primarily ensure the basic objectives of preventing odor ingress and cross-transmission of disease through water-trap seal retention. Current building drainage system design guides only extend to buildings of 30 floors, while modern tall buildings frequently extend to over 100 floors, exceeding the predictive capability of current design guides in terms of operating system conditions. However, the same design guides are being used for tall buildings as would be used for low-rise buildings. A complicating factor is the historic roots of current design guides and standards (including the interpretation of the governing fluid mechanics principles and margins of safety), causing many design differences to exist for the same conditions internationally, such as minimum trap seal retention requirements, stack-to-vent cross-vent spacing, and even stack diameter. The design guides also differ in the size and scale of the systems they cover, and most make no allowance for the specific building drainage system requirements of tall buildings. This paper assesses the limitations of applying current building drainage system design guides when applied to the case of tall buildings. Primarily, the assessments used in this research are based on codes from Europe, the USA and Australia/New Zealand as representative of the most common approaches and from which many other codes and standards are derived. The numerical simulation model, AIRNET, was used as the analysis tool. Our findings confirm that current design guides, which have been out of date for a number of decades, are now in urgent need of updating as code-compliant systems have been shown to be susceptible to water-trap seal depletion, a risk to cross-transmission of disease, which is a major public health concern, particularly in view of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Resumen
AbstractThe history of prefabrication in settler Australia is incomplete. The use of prefabricated and transportable buildings in existing Australian architectural histories focuses on colonial importation from Britain, Asia, America and New Zealand. This article, however, argues for a more diverse and local history of prefabrication — one that considers Indigenous people’s use of prefabrication and draws on archaeological research of abandoned military ventures, revealing an Australian-made, colonial prefabricated building industry that existed for over 40 years, from the 1800s to the 1840s. A more inclusive architectural history of prefabrication is considered in relation to a case study of the first European house erected in Moreton Bay at the British penal outpost of Red Cliffe Point (1824–25), a settlement established partly to contribute to British territory-marking on Australia’s distant coastlines. While existing histories prioritise transportability and ease of assembly as features of prefabricated buildings, this research has found that ease of disassembly, relocation and recycling of building components is a key feature of prefabrication in early abandoned British military garrisons.

Resumen
The 2019/20 Australian bushfires burned over 46 million acres of land, killed 34 people and left 3500 individuals homeless. Majority of deaths and buildings destroyed were in New South Wales, while the Northern Territory accounted for approximately 1/3 of the burned area. Many of the buildings that were lost were farm buildings, adding to the challenge of agricultural recovery that is already complex because of ash-covered farmland accompanied by historic levels of drought. The current research therefore aimed at characterising veldfire risk in the study area using Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI). A 39-year-long time series data was obtained from an online NASA database. Both homogeneity and stationarity tests were deployed using a non-parametric Pettitt’s and Dicky-Fuller tests respectively for data quality checks. Major results revealed a non-significant two-tailed Mann Kendall trend test with a p-value = 0.789 > 0.05 significance level. A suitable probability distribution was fitted to the annual KBDI time series where both Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Chi-square tests revealed Gamma (1) as a suitably fitted probability distribution. Return level computation from the Gamma (1) distribution using XLSTAT computer software resulted in a cumulative 40-year return period of moderate to high fire risk potential. With this low probability and 40-year-long return level, the study found the area less prone to fire risks detrimental to animal and crop production. More agribusiness investments can safely be executed in the Northern Territory without high risk aversion.

Resumen
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the design of state school buildings in Australia from the 1880s to the 1980s to establish common threads or similar concerns evident in their architecture at a national level. Design/methodology/approach – The researcher compiled a significant data set of hundreds of state schools, derived from government, professional and other publications, archival searches and site visits. Standard analytical methods in architectural research are employed, including stylistic and morphological analysis, to read the designs for meaning and intent. Findings – The data set was interrogated to draw out major themes in school design, the identification of which form the basis of the paper's argument. Four major themes, identifiable at a national level, are identified: school as house; school as civic; school as factory; and school as town. Each theme reflects a different chronological period, being approximately 1900-1920, 1920-1940, 1940-1960 and 1960-1980. The themes reflect the changing representation of aspiration for the school child and their engagement with wider society through the architecture of the school. Originality/value – The paper considers, for the first time, the concerns of educational architecture over time in Australia on a consciously national, rather than state, level.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the professional context of the educator and architects who designed and conceived Woodleigh School in Baxter, Victoria, Australia (1974-1979) and to identify common design threads in a series of schools designed by Daryl Jackson and Evan Walker in the 1970s. Design/methodology/approach – The research was derived from academic and professional publications, film footage, interviews, archival searches and site visits. Standard analytical methods in architectural research are employed, including formal, planning and morphological analysis, to read building designs for meaning and intent. Books, people and buildings were examined to piece together the design “biography” of Woodleigh School, the identification of which forms the basis of the paper's argument. Findings – Themes of loose fit, indeterminate planning, coupled with concepts of classroom as house, and school as town, and engagement with a landscape environment are drawn together under principal Michael Norman's favoured phrase that adolescents might experience “a slice of life”, preparing them for broader engagement with a world and a community outside school. The themes reflect changing aspirations for teenage education in the 1970s, indicating a free and experimental approach to the design of the school environment. Originality/value – The paper considers, for the first time, the interconnected role of educator and architect as key protagonists in envisioning connections between space and pedagogy in the 1970s alternative school.

construction material is for construction material used. Clay, rocks, sand, wood, and branches naturally leave buildings with many materials that occur used for construction. Naturally occurring substances, many are man-made products are in use, some more and some less artificial. As jio products, building materials called from a variety of settings are quarried and mined. To discover new resources because the pressure is increasing the world's growing population and pressure to hold increases. Adobe bricks stone and clay are from ancient times and were the major building materials of the world, and concrete is long and venerable history. These items are still in demand, and any other quarry for their kinds of extractive industry same environment as same creates problems. Research significance: this is a list of building materials. Buildings and structures many in the construction industry create kinds of building materials that are used. Construction is used for projects to specify materials and methods, architects and construction in this category by project manager’s materials and products are used. Cold such as rolled steel framing some building materials, blockwork, and traditionally wood modern rather than slow methods are considered as methods of construction. Many different building materials applications include; therefore, a product for your needs whether it is most suitable consult the manufacturer to verify always well. WASPAS method weighted sum model (WSM) and weighted product model wpm use benefits. Integrating wsm and wpm, ranking of waspas alternatives increases accuracy. Resumen
In China, as statutory non-cultural relic buildings, the conservation and reuse of historic buildings have received increasing attention in recent years. Among them, the investigation and value evaluation of historic buildings are the basis and core of the conservation work, and many cities have explored related technologies and methods according to local conditions. This paper takes the historic building resources in Xi’an as the research object, with the core of historic building registration and the principles of scientificity and operability. It proposes the methods and basic processes for investigating historic building resources and constructs a step-by-step evaluation system for the historic buildings in Xi’an. This research first formulates a registration standard for the identification and evaluation of historic buildings, then applies the analytic hierarchy process, Delphi method, and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to assess the comprehensive value of historic buildings. Finally, it was recognized that the historic building resources are primarily modern and contemporary buildings, playing a significant role in the cultural continuity of the ancient capital, Xi’an. In its value evaluation, emphasis should be placed on the environmental landscape value and socio-cultural value. At the same time, it is necessary to consider the comprehensive value and sub-indicators of historic buildings so that they can guide conservation and adaptation practices in a targeted manner.

Resumen
Migration to the Australian continent has ancient origins. On 1 January 1901, the Federation of the Commonwealth of Australia included six former colonies: New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland, and Western Australia. The British origin had 78% of those who were born overseas. The immigration was high on the national agenda. The most ambitious nation-building plan based on immigration was adopted in Australia in the post-World War II period. The shock of the war was so strong that even old stereotypes did not prevent Australians from embarking on immigration propaganda with the slogan “Populate or Perish”. In the middle 1950s, the Australian Department of Immigration realized that family reunion was an important component of successful settlement. In 1955 the Department implemented “Operation Reunion” – a scheme was intended to assist family members overseas to migrate to the continent and reunite with the family already living in Australia. As a result, 30000 people managed to migrate from countries such as Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, the Soviet Union, and the former Yugoslavia under this scheme. Today Australia’s approach to multicultural affairs is a unique model based on integration and social cohesion. On governmental level, the Australians try to maintain national unity through respect and preservation of cultural diversity. An example of such an attitude to historical memory is a database created by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). For our research, we decided to choose information about residents of East-Central European origin (Ukraine-born, Poland-born, and Czech Republic-born citizens) in Australia, based on the information from the above mentioned database. The article provides the brief historical background of Polish, Ukrainian and Czech groups on the Continent and describes the main characteristics of these groups of people, such as geographic distribution, age, language, religion, year of arrival, median income, educational qualifications, and employment characteristics.

Resumen
Abstract Historic buildings carry the history of human civilisation, and their conservation and utilisation are widely valued by countries around the world. At present, the lack of qualitative and quantitative assessment and evaluation methods for the preservation status and attachment value of historic buildings poses a challenge to the smooth implementation of the conservation and utilisation of historic buildings. The development of a set of system standards for the assessment and evaluation of historic buildings is an urgent task for the conservation and utilisation of historic buildings. This paper proposes a set of comprehensive mapping assessment and evaluation system for historical buildings through the analysis and sorting out of the current situation of preserving historical buildings and their development lineage, architectural style, building type, society and art. Finally, based on the above mapping evaluation system, 20 historical buildings are graded according to the requirements of historical building classification, and according to the different levels. Corresponding conservation measures are proposed and different planning schemes are formulated to better utilise the historical, scientific, cultural and economic values of historical buildings.

Resumen
In this thesis, the problem of the principles of new designs in historic built landscapes is discussed. In approaching the problem, a theoretical framework is developed and the general principles regarding new buildings in historic settings are derived from the theoretical context. Subsequently, the proposed principles is tried to be adapted to the case of Odunpazari historic urban fabric. Finally, a Youth Center for a specific Project Area in Odunpazari is proposed, and the integration of the proposal to the context is evaluated. The foremost aim of the thesis is proposing general principles concerning good architecture that continues and contributes to the spirit of place, and adapting them for a specific design problem in a specific place in order to evaluate the efficiency of the principles proposed. In developing the theoretical framework, it was discussed that, in determination of the principles for new designs, the historic built landscape should be handled in a way that resolves the network of relationships and allow the definition of the spirit of place. The methodology of understanding the spirit of place was established with reference to the approaches developed by Christopher Alexander and Christian Norberg-Schulz. According to the studies by these scholars, a triad layer system in resolving the spirit of place is developed. As named by Christian Norberg-Schulz, the layers of Gestalts, typologies and figures constituted the analytical framework leading to the resolution of the network of relationships between the components of a place. This model of analyzing and defining the spirit of place was found valuable, since it does not only focuses on the formal aspects of the historic built landscape, but also questions the main rules forming the unity and coherence of place. Odunpazari traditional urban fabric is selected as a case study, and its physical, historical, social and economical context is evaluated by the help of the literature and site surveys. Finally, a &

Resumen
The retention of historic structures and the information which they contain, the basic goals of historic preservation, has occurred with increasing frequency in the twenty-year period following the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Admittedly, the ideal scenario involves the retention and reuse of architecturally or historically important structures. However, occasionally notable buildings are found which are located upon sites earmarked for new construction or which have deteriorated to a condition which makes restoration or adaptive reuse not economically feasible. Adequate documentation prior to the destruction of such buildings not only preserves the information therein contained, but also may encourage reuse of some structures by making the owner aware of their contribution to the streetscape, to local history or to the architectural history of a community or region.Although parameters for adequate documentation exist at the national level for national landmarks, state and local standards are vague at best, leaving both the professional and the non-professional preservationist to determine the level of documentation and the amount of research required. Difficult at best for the professional, documentation in the absence of guidelines frequently proves disastrous for the non-professional.This thesis is the product of a documentation project conducted between September 1984 and October 1985 to provide "adequate documentation" for a client of the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Having no established guidelines or precedent to follow, and instructed to produce "adequate documentation" for 28 structures at six Indiana State Hospitals, the documentation team learned much during the fourteen-month process of producing both written and graphic documentation. The author presents this descriptive analysis of one component of the documentation process - the preparation of the 331-page written text which accompanied photographs and H.A.B.S. drawings. While each project differs, the Indiana State Hospital Project established a precedent which may be referred to By the C.A.P. when faced with similar projects in the future.

Reutilization means to change the original purposes or the process of lasting reuse function in architecture’s life cycle. The purpose is to prevent historical buildings from destroy or leave unused. The project of historical buildings’ reutilization often cooperates by teams from different background to design its processes. Though different participants exchange large designing data and communicate to obtain coordination and consistency in designing results. Therefore, the key factor of the project success is depend on process design and the way of communicate. This study focuses on optimizing and improving the interactions among design activities of historic building renovation as well as establishing and verifying scheduling system analysis and modules. We tried to understand the steps taken by consultants during the design and planning process of historic building renovation through literatures and break down the processes according to Design Structure Matrix. By combining matrix and traditional tear method, we reduce mutual coupling in process design and offer problem solving that may occur. We use analysis model in practical cases to confirm the capable of process redesign, in order to achieve the purpose.

Many of Taiwan’s historic buildings and blocks have slowly developed and become new landmarks. After an interview with a gourmet show or a tourist program,a large number of people come to visit these blocks during holidays. The original narrow streets become new gathering points because of the gathering business. We should understand what the current risk factors are, and put forward the solution to solve these risk factors. Avoiding risk factors cause harm to tourists’ personal safety when a fire rescue case or an emergency medical service is occurred. This study will be able to identify multiple risk factors that threaten the Hukou Township historic buildings and blocks by reviewing and analyzing the fire cases located at historical buildings and blocks. This study adopted literature review methods, case analysis methods, expert interview methods, questionnaire survey methods, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and other research methods to find out risk factors and develop the solving solution, and be provided as a reference for fire rescue authorities or relevant units to make the fire rescue, emergency medical service and personnel evacuation strategies. With a view to make a fast and correct response to the disasters, and increase the probability of evacuation effectively both for residents and tourists. The hierarchical structure of improvement plan of risk factors in the Hukou historic buildings and blocks was developed in this study, and contains 5 goals, 13 criteria, and 3 candidate improvement plans. The questionnaire survey was conducted of six fire brigades and summarized the weights of the basic goals and candidate plans through analytic hierarchical analysis. According to the statistics, we know the order of goals, which are funds (weight value:0.48 ), executive manpower (weight value:0.24 ),iii execution time (weight value:0.13 ), efficiency achievement (weight value:0.08 ), and advanced concept of disaster prevention (weight value:0.05 ), and the order of improvement plans, which are conducting regular fire drills and inspections by fire departments (integration weights:0.57), installing residential fire detectors in households located on historical streets (Integrated Weights:0.28), and promoting education and training for self-government committees in the business district (general weight:0.13) In conclusion, the best improvement plan of risk factors in the Hukou historic buildings and blocks is conducting regular fire drills and inspections by fire departments.

Historic sites and historical buildings are the crystals of artistic wisdom in history; they record the architectural styles and culture of the time. Once a fire occurs and it is not controlled immediately, the structures would be destroyed, seriously damaging the cultural and historical values. Thus, fire prevention in historical buildings is an important issue. This study collected the documents from 1853 to 2013 to discuss the fire causes. The results indicated that arson accounts for 33.33%, negligence of fire use accounts for 28.21%, electrical fire accounts for 20.51%, unknown cause accounts for 12.82%, and negligence in construction accounts for 2.56%. The conservation of historic sites and historical buildings should be accomplished by a reasonable and feasible fire prevention system. According to the discussion on the fire prevention management system, the historic sites and historical buildings are not outside of the applicable scope of the Fire Act, as indicated in the Cultural Assets Preservation Act. The fire prevention management should contain fire prevention concept and appropriate fire prevention management strategies. In order to detect fire early, an automatic notification mechanism needs to be adopted, while arson prevention, training on fire prevention and electrical equipment use should be provided for workers, and fire-fighting drills should be held regularly. The cultural management units should supervise the fire prevention management system, plan response strategies for disasters, evaluate fire risks of historic sites periodically, and combine the strategies of self-service, joint-service and public-service. The fire prevention plan should be performed by Plan, Do, Check and Act, so as to upgrade the fire safety level of historic sites and historical buildings. The case protection prospectus and fire prevention management strategy are made based on the concept of "management first and quick notification". The fire risk assessment method of this study refers to the results of Shen-Wen Chien , who used point planning method, and Chihkan Tower was treated as the research target. Although the evaluation result is of Class A (good), there are still some potential fire risk factors, such as fire prevention drill not meeting the fire scene, no broadcast system, and nighttime notification. The above problems are also the emphases on other historic sites and historical buildings in Taiwan.

In 1982, the Council for Cultural Affairs established "Cultural Heritage Preservation Act", which designates or registers architectural works with history and cultural value as monuments and historic buildings in order to make the next generation continuously understand the history by visiting them. However, there are many monuments and historic buildings which are not immediately preserved and maintained after designated or registered. Improper methods also lead monuments and historical buildings to lose the original appearance, or even to be damaged. Therefore, it is required that any of the monuments and historic buildings need to have an intact project of management and maintenance of monuments and historic buildings. Yongjing Wei Chengmei ancestral hall is the only one that was totally invested by owner to repair in Changhua. In 2004, it was praised by monument expert Li QianLang as "Taiwan's twenty folk ancient buildings". Afterward, Yongjing Wei Chengmei ancestral hall was registered as a historic building by Changhua county government on 2008. The structure is combined with many different construction materials. Therefore, the regular maintenance and preservation of the buildings rely on experts from different fields to propose a comprehensive project of management and maintenance. This study is expected to understand the advantages and disadvantages in project of the management and maintenance of and historic buildings, which has a great resource, to understand the problems of the management and maintenance in Taiwan, and to make suggestions.

Resumen
AbstractBy 1955, a decade after the first exciting observing projects, the landscape of radio astronomy had shifted considerably. With many more research groups now starting up, and the lines of research growing both more diverse and more specialised, remaining a global research leader required making riskier, more strategic decisions. In retrospect it can be seen that this was largely accomplished in Australia by the building of the now-iconic large “Dish” radio telescope at Parkes, NSW, and by the success of the research projects led by John Bolton through the 1960s. The funding and construction of the large dish took nearly a decade to achieve and was by no means certain through much of that time. Robertson has provided a thorough description of these events in his two books from 1992, Beyond Southern Skies—Radio Astronomy and the Parkes Telescope and in 2017, Radio Astronomer—John Bolton and a New Window on the Universe.

Resumen
Assessing the structural integrity of unreinforced masonry structures is a complex and time-consuming process that necessitates the knowledge of various experts and meticulous cross-referencing of diverse data to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the building. In recent years, the Architecture and Construction Industry has witnessed a digital transformation, largely driven by Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM has proven immensely valuable in the conservation of historic buildings. However, while it excels in new construction projects, its full potential is not fully realized when dealing with existing structures. A clear example of this limitation can be observed in the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) format, which lacks instances necessary for accurately representing existing building features. This research contribution aims to advance the process of semantic enrichment of BIM for existing buildings, building upon findings from existing literature. Leveraging the Linked Data Approach and utilizing both existing ontologies and newly proposed domain ontologies, the objective is to facilitate the identification of vulnerabilities and potential local failure mechanisms. The geometric information of the building is represented in the IFC STEP format and enriched semantically by establishing new relationships between classes that are not present in the standard IFC. This approach is applied to a case study in the historical center of Castelnuovo di Porto, Italy. The results of this work demonstrate how the proposed model, enhancing the BIM representation of existing buildings and enabling better identification of potential weaknesses, contributes to improved preservation and seismic resilience of historic structures

Resumen
AbstractBrownfield sites often form on industrial sites of once successful companies dating from the era of industrialization, due to loss of active function and despite their historical significance. Accompanied by urban decline, they contribute to continuous pollution, decrease in economic values, as well as loss of local identity. On the other hand, they represent a reserve of space of great potential in central urban locations. The main purpose of this research is to examine possibilities for improvement by their reuse, while preserving built-in cultural values and acknowledging contemporary requirements. A review of contemporary literature considering the concept of brownfield sites provides a starting theoretical basis for understanding their strengths and potentials, as well as the problems when redeveloping such sites. The subject of the research is exploring strategies for brownfield revitalization while reactivating industrial buildings through adaptive reuse. This includes sustainable solutions in accordance with modern requirements, especially energy efficiency, as one of the main concepts of existing building stock improvement that recognizes importance of responsible energy resources management. The paper includes a case study of the previously devastated brownfield site of “Beko” industrial building, located in the central urban area of Belgrade. Its former state, as well as parts of the documentation for reconstruction and its conversion into a modern business facility “Kalemegdan Business Center,” is thoroughly analyzed, emphasizing the positive results of energy efficiency improvements despite the restrictions intended for historic buildings alterations. The aim of the paper is to create a theoretical platform that provides firm arguments in favor of realizing the importance and potentials of industrial brownfield sites revitalization at present, as well as the constraints regarding its practical implementation considering buildings of cultural value.

Resumen
AbstractThere is currently an increasing trend in urban centres towards the use of public outdoor lighting systems to illuminate historic and architecturally important buildings during evening hours, but for which there is no specific regulatory framework. Considering that the light is a key factor involved in regulating growth and physiological processes in photosynthetic organisms, it seems appropriate to address the effects that artificial light has on the organisms growing on the facades affected by public lighting. In this sense, despite scientific research in the fields of biological colonization of buildings surfaces and light technology has advanced greatly in recent years, the combination of both disciplines aimed at the correct handling of city public lighting remains uncharted territory with huge potential to provide innovative solutions for smart cities. Recent studies have examined how urban monuments are affected by night-time outdoor illumination in combination with natural sunlight and demonstrated that the use of suitable lighting can inhibit the development of biological colonization. In this frame, this chapter will look at ways of contribute to the long-term management of public illumination on monuments and other structures, while reducing negative impacts caused by night lighting.

Resumen
In response to the third thematic sub-stream of the 38th Annual SAHANZ Conference, this paper will discuss the role of architectural research in the architecture of Gummer and Ford, the Auckland-based practice, often described as one of the most prolific bureaus in interwar New Zealand. The paper is a fraction of a three-staged project, “Gummer and Ford,” developed by a team of researchers from the Unitec Institute of Technology in response to an event recognised as a milestone in the New Zealand architectural calendar – the 2023 centenary of the firm’s establishment. This paper explores the design principles of William Gummer, the principal designer of the firm. From 1914 to 1935, Gummer consistently published his view that the goal of the architect was to cater to humanity’s highest instincts. He was unwavering but vague on how this is achieved; through composition, unity, contrast, proportion and scale, appropriate use of materials is all needed to produce buildings of good character. But what did he really mean by this? A close reading of three books Gummer considered invaluable to architectural students – The Essentials of Composition as Applied to Art by John Vredenburgh Van Pelt, Architectural Composition by Nathaniel Cortlandt Curtis, and The Mistress Art by Reginald Bloomfield – offers a direct insight into the influences behind his thinking about architecture and his architectural production. Directly traceable to Gummer, the three titles include clear, precise instructions on both the functional and artistic nature of architectural design. Interestingly, this paper employs a method not dissimilar to Gummer’s design method. These books taken together, along with Gummer’s own writing, a study of renderings and construction drawings, and close observation of the buildings, an architectural analysis of Gummer’s work becomes possible – it is what Gummer himself referred to as Architectural Research. This historically focused study will bring a new perspective to understanding the value and contribution of traditional architects, not only in New Zealand but other English-speaking countries.

This paper examines the development of infrastructures for outdoor advertising and debates over visual ‘oversaturation’ in the built environment. It begins with the boom in posters that came in the 19th century with a plethora of new manufactured goods and the attempts by civic officials to create structures that would extend cities’ available surface area for the placement of ads. It then charts the rise of building-top ‘sky signs,’ articulated billboards, kiosks, and digital media facades while detailing the policy initiatives meant to regulate these ad surfaces. This work builds on ongoing research into the development of signage technologies in Sydney and Melbourne, the measurement and regulation of ‘visual pollution’, and the promotion of entertainment and nightlife in precincts defined by neon and historic signage.

Resumen
This project responds to the increasing ambiguity between traditional advertising substrates and building exteriors. It charts the development of display technologies in relation to changing architectural practices and urban landscapes. Signage innovation in Australia has been driven by increasingly sophisticated construction practices and by the changing nature of cities; shifting markedly with increased automobility, migration and cultural change, and mobile phone use. The means by which urban reformers and architectural critics have sought to define, measure, and control new ad technologies—sometimes deemed ‘visual pollution’— offers a prehistory to contemporary debates over ‘smart city’ street furniture, and a synecdoche to narratives of degradation and ugliness in the post-war built environment. These four thematically linked episodes show how Australian civic officials and built environment activists have responded to visual clutter, and the fuzzy line between advertisers, architects, and builders erecting increasingly dynamic infrastructures for ad delivery. This progression shows the fluctuating place of advertisement in the built environment, ending with the emergence of today’s programmable façades and urban screens.

Resumen
With the rapid development of Chinese cities, many buildings with distinctive local cultural characteristics have been gradually destroyed. China is rich in architectural heritage, so it is urgent to protect and restore historic buildings. However, the traditional protection methods of historic buildings gradually fail, and may even cause further damage to historic buildings. With the continuous development of the construction industry, the traditional architectural design methods can no longer meet the needs of contemporary architects for information. BIM technology as a new generation of information technology, its application in the construction industry through the study of modern building characteristics, history and present situation, for historical buildings damaged by routine cannot repair, lack of protection consciousness lead to protection work is not in place, social economy and protection of historical buildings conflict protection problems, combined with domestic and foreign research on the protection of modern historical buildings, put forward BIM technology applied to the protection of modern historical buildings.

Resumen
This study explores how design research writing can engage with historical reference in a radical way. In the 2002 essay “Shijian Tingzhi de Chengshi” (“City Froze in Time”), based on Chapter 2 of his 2000 PhD thesis, Xugou Chengshi (Fictionalising City), the Chinese architect Wang Shu proposes reinterpreting the traditional Chinese architecture and city through the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss’s notion of “bricolage”, which is defined as making do with available objects. Bricolage is informative for understanding Wang’s design undertakings, which involve skilful adaptations of vernacular building types and construction techniques in new urban projects. Nevertheless, its fundamental role in shaping Wang’s design writings is yet to be fully understood. In his design writings, Wang employs a specific quotation method whereby words and paragraphs from other writers’ preexisting works are reused and woven into new textual compositions. Through formal analysis of “City Froze in Time” and comparisons of compositional patterns between the essay and Wang’s built projects, mainly the Xiangshan Campus of the China Academy of Art, Phase II, Hangzhou (2007) and the Ningbo History Museum, Ningbo (2008), this piece explores three issues. First, it demonstrates how textual fragments found in the past and uttered by others undergo bricolage in Wang’s essay. Second, it foregrounds the intention behind Wang’s chosen writing strategy and investigates broader critical issues, such as authorship and the past–present nonlinear order associated with Wang’s strategy. Third, it expresses how historical materials – understanding “materials” in an inclusive sense – are treated in comparable ways in Wang’s written and built works. By examining Wang’s case, this paper highlights a radical case of contemporary architectural research writing in which an attempt is made to demolish the boundary between theory and design by extending the make-do logic of design into the field of design reflection.

The prevalence and impact of child maltreatment in Australia: Findings from the Australian Child Maltreatment Study: Brief Report. Queensland University of Technology, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/rep.eprints.239397.

Resumen
The Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) is a landmark study for our nation. The ACMS research team has generated the first nationally representative data on the prevalence of each of the five types of child maltreatment in Australia, and their associated health impacts through life. We also identified information about the context of maltreatment experiences, including how old children are when it occurs, and who inflicts it. This knowledge about which children are most at risk of which types of abuse and neglect, at which ages, and by whom, is needed to develop evidencebased population approaches required to reduce child maltreatment in Australia. The concerning prevalence of maltreatment and its devastating associated outcomes present an urgent imperative for nation-building reform to better protect Australian children and reduce associated costs to individuals, families, communities and broader society. The ACMS collected data from 8500 randomly selected Australians aged 16-65 years and older. We included an oversample of 3500 young people 16-24 years of aged to generate particularly strong data about child maltreatment in contemporary Australian society, to assess its associated impacts in adolescence and early adulthood, and to allow future prevalence studies to detect reductions in prevalence rates over time. Our participants aged 25 and over enabled us to understand prevalence trends at different times in Australian history, and to measure associated health outcomes through life. Participants provided information on childhood experiences of each of the five types of child abuse and neglect, and other childhood adversities, mental health disorders, health risk behaviours, health services utilisation, and more. Our findings provide the first nationally representative data on the prevalence of child maltreatment in Australia. Moreover, the ACMS is the first national study globally to examine maltreatment experiences and associated health and social outcomes of all five forms of child maltreatment. Taken together, our findings provide a deep understanding of the prevalence, context and impact of child abuse and neglect in Australia and make an important contribution to the international field. This brief report presents the main findings from the ACMS for a general public audience. These main findings are further detailed in seven peer-reviewed scholarly articles, published in a special edition of the Medical Journal of Australia, Australia’s leading medical journal. Forthcoming work will examine other important questions about the impacts of specific maltreatment experiences to generate additional evidence to inform governments and stakeholders about optimal prevention policy and practice. There is cause for hope. In recent years, there have been reductions in physical abuse, and in some types of sexual abuse. These reductions are extremely important. They mean that fewer children are suffering, and they indicate that change is possible. Policies and programs to reduce these types of maltreatment are having an effect. Yet, there are other concerning trends, with some types of maltreatment becoming even more common, including emotional abuse, some types of sexual abuse, and exposure to domestic violence. And new types of sexual victimisation are also emerging. As a society, we have much work to do. We know that child maltreatment can be reduced if we work together as governments, service sectors, and communities. We need to invest more, and invest better. It is a moral, social and economic imperative for Australian governments to develop a coordinated long-term plan for generational reform. We have found that: 1. Child maltreatment is widespread. 2. Girls experience particularly high rates of sexual abuse and emotional abuse. 3. Child maltreatment is a major problem affecting today’s Australian children and youth – it is not just something that happened in the past. 4. Child maltreatment is associated with severe mental health problems and behavioural harms, both in childhood and adulthood. 5. Child maltreatment is associated with severe health risk behaviours, both in childhood and adulthood. 6. Emotional abuse is particularly harmful, and is much more damaging than society has understood.

Resumen
Building on the success of a UK-based project, Queering Public Space (Catterall & Azzouz 2021), this report refocuses the lens on Australian cities. This is necessary because the histories, legacies and contemporary forms of cities differ across the world, requiring nuanced local insight to ‘usualise’ queerness in public spaces. The report comprises the results of a desk-top research project. First, a thematic literature review (Braun & Clarke 2021) on the experiences of LGBTIQ+ individuals, families and communities in Australian cities was conducted, identifying best practices in inclusive local area policy and design globally. Building upon the findings of the literature review, a set of assessment criteria was developed: – Stakeholder engagement; – Formation of a LGBTIQ+ advisory committee; – Affirming and usualising LGBTIQ+ communities; – Staff training and awareness; and – Inclusive public space design guidelines

Resumen
Australia's and China's resources (e.g. Olympic Dam Cu-U-Au-Ag and Bayan Obo REE deposits) highlight how discovery and mining of iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG), iron oxide±apatite (IOA) and affiliated primary critical metal deposits in metasomatic iron and alkali-calcic (MIAC) mineral systems can secure a long-term supply of critical metals for Canada and its partners. In Canada, MIAC systems comprise a wide range of undeveloped primary critical metal deposits (e.g. NWT NICO Au-Co-Bi-Cu and Québec HREE-rich Josette deposits). Underexplored settings are parts of metallogenic belts that extend into Australia and the USA. Some settings, such as the Camsell River district explored by the Dene First Nations in the NWT, have infrastructures and 100s of km of historic drill cores. Yet vocabularies for mapping MIAC systems are scanty. Ability to identify metasomatic vectors to ore is fledging. Deposit models based on host rock types, structural controls or metal associations underpin the identification of MIAC-affinities, assessment of systems' full mineral potential and development of robust mineral exploration strategies. This workshop presentation reviews public geoscience research and tools developed by the Targeted Geoscience Initiative to establish the MIAC frameworks of prospective Canadian settings and global mining districts and help de-risk exploration for IOCG, IOA and affiliated primary critical metal deposits. The knowledge also supports fundamental research, environmental baseline assessment and societal decisions. It fulfills objectives of the Canadian Mineral and Metal Plan and the Critical Mineral Mapping Initiative among others. The GSC-led MIAC research team comprises members of the academic, private and public sectors from Canada, Australia, Europe, USA, China and Dene First Nations. The team's novel alteration mapping protocols, geological, mineralogical, geochemical and geophysical framework tools, and holistic mineral systems and petrophysics models mitigate and solve some of the exploration and geosciences challenges posed by the intricacies of MIAC systems. The group pioneers the use of discriminant alteration diagrams and barcodes, the assembly of a vocab for mapping and core logging, and the provision of field short courses, atlas, photo collections and system-scale field, geochemical, rock physical properties and geophysical datasets are in progress to synthesize shared signatures of Canadian settings and global MIAC mining districts. Research on a metamorphosed MIAC system and metamorphic phase equilibria modelling of alteration facies will provide a foundation for framework mapping and exploration of high-grade metamorphic terranes where surface and near surface resources are still to be discovered and mined as are those of non-metamorphosed MIAC systems.

Resumen
The Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) and Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI) programs conducted extensive collaborative research on mineral systems with iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) and affiliated deposits in prospective settings of Canada. Regional alteration mapping as well as geochemical and geophysical modelling undertaken under the GEM program documented the evolution of polymetallic metasomatic systems with iron-oxide and alkali-calcic alteration and led to an increased recognition of the mineral potential of poorly explored areas and historic deposits of the Great Bear magmatic zone in the Northwest Territories, thus providing a solid framework for exploration. Early and barren albitite corridors form across the mineral systems and locally host uranium mineralization associated with telescoping of alteration facies by tectonic activity during the metasomatic growth of the systems. Subsequent to albitization, high-temperature Ca-Fe and Ca-K-Fe alteration form iron oxide-apatite (± rare-earth element) mineralization and IOCG variants rich in cobalt and other critical metals, respectively. Systems that further mature to K-Fe alteration form IOCG mineralization and can evolve to mineralized near-surface phyllic alteration and epithermal caps. Transitional facies also host polymetallic skarn mineralization. Rare-earth element enrichments within iron oxide-apatite zones are strongest where remobilization has occurred, particularly along deformation zones. The TGI projects documented the pertinence for a GEM activity in the Great Bear magmatic zone and subsequently synthesized GEM geoscientific data into a system-scale, ore-deposit model, and outlined criteria for mineral resource assessment. This model, and newly developed field-mapping and lithogeochemical tools were shown to be efficient mineral exploration and regional mapping methods in Canada and were also applied to the archetype IOCG deposit, Olympic Dam, and other deposits in the Olympic Cu-Au metallogenic province of Australia. Case examples also include the Romanet Horst in the Trans-Hudson Orogen (second phase of GEM), the Central Mineral Belt in Labrador (TGI), the Wanapitei Lake district in Ontario (private sector exploration results used by TGI), and the Bondy gneiss complex in Quebec (TGI).

Resumen
Vineyards are found on six of seven continents, producing a crop of high economic value with much historic and cultural significance. Because of the wide range of conditions under which grapes are grown, management approaches are highly varied and must be adapted to local climatic constraints. Research has been conducted in the traditionally prominent grape growing regions of Europe, Australia, and the western USA, but far less information is available to guide production under more extreme growing conditions. The overarching goal of this project was to improve understanding of vineyard water management related to the critical inter-row zone. Experiments were conducted in moist temperate (North Carolina, USA) and arid (Negev, Israel) regions in order to address inter-row water use under high and low water availability conditions. Specific objectives were to: i) calibrate and verify a modeling technique to identify components of evapotranspiration (ET) in temperate and semiarid vineyard systems, ii) evaluate and refine strategies for excess water removal in vineyards for moist temperate regions of the Southeastern USA, and iii) evaluate and refine strategies for water conservation in vineyards for semi-arid regions of Israel. Several new measurement and modeling techniques were adapted and assessed in order to partition ET between favorable transpiration by the grapes and potentially detrimental water use within the vineyard inter-row. A micro Bowen ratio measurement system was developed to quantify ET from inter-rows. The approach was successful at the NC site, providing strong correlation with standard measurement approaches and adding capability for continuous, non-destructive measurement within a relatively small footprint. The environmental conditions in the Negev site were found to limit the applicability of the technique. Technical issues are yet to be solved to make this technique sufficiently robust. The HYDRUS 2D/3D modeling package was also adapted using data obtained in a series of intense field campaigns at the Negev site. The adapted model was able to account for spatial variation in surface boundary conditions, created by diurnal canopy shading, in order to accurately calculate the contribution of interrow evaporation (E) as a component of system ET. Experiments evaluated common practices in the southeastern USA: inter-row cover crops purported to reduce water availability and thereby favorably reduce grapevine vegetative growth; and southern Israel: drip irrigation applied to produce a high value crop with maximum water use efficiency. Results from the NC site indicated that water use by the cover crop contributed a significant portion of vineyard ET (up to 93% in May), but that with ample rainfall typical to the region, cover crop water use did little to limit water availability for the grape vines. A potential consequence, however, was elevated below canopy humidity owing to the increased inter-row evapotranspiration associated with the cover crops. This creates increased potential for fungal disease occurrence, which is a common problem in the region. Analysis from the Negev site reveals that, on average, E accounts for about10% of the total vineyard ET in an isolated dripirrigated vineyard. The proportion of ET contributed by E increased from May until just before harvest in July, which could be explained primarily by changes in weather conditions. While non-productive water loss as E is relatively small, experiments indicate that further improvements in irrigation efficiency may be possible by considering diurnal shading effects on below canopy potential ET. Overall, research provided both scientific and practical outcomes including new measurement and modeling techniques, and new insights for humid and arid vineyard systems. Research techniques developed through the project will be useful for other agricultural systems, and the successful synergistic cooperation amongst the research team offers opportunity for future collaboration.
