Karcz, Fiona. "De Lisbonne à Nagasaki : circulations, connexions et productions de l'imprimerie missionnaire jésuite du Japon (1579-1620)". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024SORUL139.
Texto completoThis work focuses on the Jesuit missionary printing press that was active in Japan between 1591 and 1614. The movable type press, imported from Lisbon by the members of the Tenshō Embassy (1582-1590), played an essential role in the Jesuit accommodation strategy and in the establishment of Catholicism in the Japanese archipelago. While the first three decades of the mission (1549-1579) had been marked by great difficulties - the language barrier, the lack of missionary manpower and the precariousness of the mission due to the changing political context - the appointment of the Italian Jesuit Alessandro Valignano as Visitor of Indian and East-Asian Missions opened a new chapter in the history of the Japanese mission. Faced with a growing Christianity, he encouraged the inclusion of native members in the missionary staff and the production of printed materials, thus compensating for the lack of missionaries. This research analyzes the introduction, operation and evolution of Jesuit printing in Japan. Within the overall context of the rise of imprints, which led to the circulation of European texts beyond European borders, we focus on the role of these printed materials in modern religious missions. As they were instruments for evangelization, European catechetical texts were received, adapted and reproduced locally, thanks to the work of missionaries and native collaborators who turned missionary presses into crossroads for the production of knowledge. The Japanese mission printings served as supports of faith and manuals for the missionaries and they enable to examine missionary strategies, by investigating the choice of texts, their translations and their adaptations. Through the lens of Jesuit printing in Japan, this work seeks to cross and connect histories: the history of the universalization of Catholicism at the time of Iberian globalization and the history of the circulation of people and knowledge in the modern era

Texto completoThis research will examine the identity revival of the generations that followed that of the Armenian migration. It will be based on the study of Armenian activism taking to the streets, during the Protest Decade of the 1970s. Actually, Armenians’ quest to promote their cause – that includes an unsolved national issue together with an unrecognized genocide issue - could not be reduced to the binary choice between armed struggle and diplomatic lobbying. They have also been the proponents of a history of street protests between the early 1970s and the mid-1980s.This research will be based on a corpus of oral sources, militant press articles and public archives - mostly diplomatic sources and police reports. It will cross-examine the social history of the diaspora with the connection of multiple spaces and the sociology of protests. This approach will allow to understand the articulation between actors and practices and thus how a diaspora can mix and make its own endogenous and exogenous references and patterns of protest. By questioning the shaping and meeting of these references and practices, this research aims at showing that a diaspora cannot be reduced to its dual identity but is also the bearer of world history as it partakes in multiple and intermingling belonging scales. The history of a diaspora knows many chronologies and the timeline of its mobilizations may slightly differ from those of the host society. In addition, its transnational and ubiquitous street protests have allowed the diaspora to become rooted in their host countries while perpetuating its sense of belonging to the ever-changing Armenian identity. For the diaspora, these protests have been instrumental in reconnecting spaces and have had a performative effect since they contributed to making public opinion aware of the Armenian question in equal terms to the diplomatic and armed struggles
Chabaille, Fleur. "La concession française de Tianjin : une histoire connectée de l 'expansion des concessions étrangères en Chine (1846-1946)". Thesis, Lyon 2, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015LYO20153.
Texto completoThis thesis aims to further clarify the territorial deployment of foreign settlements in China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although the period examined extends from 1846 to the retrocession of the last concessions in 1946, special emphasis is placed on the 1910s, a decade which spelled the end of expansionist logic. The first part analyzes the project of expansion led by the French Municipality of Tianjin from 1902 to 1946 in the Laoxikai District 老西開. This symbolic example serves both as pillar and springboard for writing a connected history of the expansion of foreign settlements. The case study on Tianjin provides a clearer analysis that encompasses Shanghai and Hankou in the second part. Establishing a perspective on the three cities reveals the principles and conditions under which foreign imperialism evolved in China, where mutually competing forces played leading roles. Further, it captures and illustrates the mechanisms of exchange and compromise engaged with Chinese officials and urban citizens. It also discloses the difficult position and weakness of the Chinese State before and after the 1911 Revolution, and the complexity of the relationship between national and local authorities. Finally, it offers a unique vantage point from which to observe sections of Chinese society within the treaty ports whose forms of expression and protest experienced a significant turning point in the 1910s. Relationships between these intertwined evolutions challenge both the dominant historiographical narrative on Western triumphant imperialism and orthodox representations associated with Chinese "modern" nationalism
Hamache, Soraya. ""Prabhat nagari" (1929-1953) : la contribution d’une compagnie cinématographique indienne à l’émergence du système Bollywood". Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019BOR30027.
Texto completoFor a long time ignored even denied because of its movies considered less serious and mediocre, the industry of Indian cinema based in Mumbai is nevertheless one of the most important and powerful in the world. Bollywood produced several classic films that should be more considered in our societies in particular in Europe and North America but also in India itself. However, views outside India are evolving in the mirror of new Indian visions of West. Bollywood is being more attractive which explains an increase of articles, web sites, documentaries, especially on the star system, but less attention was paid to the industry and its history. The 1930's constitutes an important step in Bombay film history as Brian Shoesmith demonstrated. With the arrival of a new innovation, talkies, this decade represents a keystone in Indian cinemas' s history and Hindi cinema's in particular. The case of the Prabhat company (1929-1953), one of the leading studios in the 1930s, is in this connection extremely interesting to analyze in order to understand the emergence of this industrial system, from within. Due to its history from Kolhapur to Poona and its narrow relations with Bombay, the analysis of this company producing quality films in Marathi and Hindi contributed to the development of the cinematographic industry in Bombay. Moreover, it allows us to understand its industrial choices, between regionalism, nationalism and globalization. Thanks to Prabhat example, we are able to seize the multiple facets of this emergent Bollywood system and its territories. Although this industry seems to become renowned nowadays, Hindi films were already present at an international scale since the 1930s-1940s. Nowadays, this history seems to be lost in the memories of the studio
Rogalski, Landrot Boris de. "La fabrique matérielle et symbolique de la ville : le cas de Villeurbanne de 1900 à 1950". Thesis, Lyon, École normale supérieure, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014ENSL0893/document.
Texto completoMy thesis, entitled “The material and symbolic urban fabric : the case of the city of Villeurbanne from 1900 to 1950” aims to analyse the mechanisms of urban fabric in order to highlight the role of political actors and the influence of urban experiences that lie outside of the municipality, thanks to which urban projects have been developed and spread in order to adapt Villeurbanne to an urban model. The late nineteenth century was a period of identity tensions in Villeurbanne in reaction to the project of annexation of the city by his powerful neighbour, Lyon. Municipal Council spread identity discourses in order to distinguish Villeurbanne and Lyon, and to mobilise inhabitants and convince politicians to reject the annexation. Jules Grandclément, socialist mayor from 1908 to 1922, rationalized the municipal management and introduced innovations to reform the city befor 1914. World War I disrupted the municipal level, but stimulated municipal intervention in urban planification. During the preparation of urban plan, municipal councillors represented Villeurbanne, not as a simple suburb, but as a city, and they organized exchanges of urban kowledges with other municipalities and especially with municipal experts of Lyon. Mayor Lazare Goujon (1924-1935) was directly related to the continuity of the initiatives of his predecessor. He innovated by introducing an ambitious urban policy that modified the urban morphology giving to Vileurbanne its urban attributes. The audience of urban transformations was such that Villeurbanne was represented as an example of modern city during the 1930s. Upon arrival at the head of the municipality in 1935, the Communists denounced the expensive urban policy of its predecessor, and they implemented a local policy in the context of the Popular Front. The political color of the municipality during the inter-war period was erased during the World War II in favor of the ideology of the Petain’s government. The real estate market slowed since the 1930s and stopped during World War II, but was reactivated by the State housing policy in 1950s. This State intervention in the field of urban planning expertise created conflicts but mostly generated a gap between the material and symbolic fabric of the city at the local level
Pichard, Laëtitia. "La présence américaine dans le Centre-Ouest de la France pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, 1917-1921". Thesis, La Rochelle, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LAROF002.
Texto completoIn the context of the First World War centennial celebrations, this thesis aims towards a new comprehension of the current Great War historiography. Indeed, based on the example of the American forces established in the Central-West region of France between 1917 and 1921, the goal is to find the various connections created on all levels, between the two sides of the Atlantic. In October 1917, the Americans arrive at La Pallice, the port of La Rochelle, and from there they scattered through the region along a logistical axe, towards Tours. From Charente-Maritime to Indre-et-Loire, through the regions of Charente, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne, this study seeks to understand how via the American presence, the Central-West region opened up to the world. The paper shows that up to 1921 wherever there is an American base, the material and cultural physiognomy of the city changes. These aspects enable us to re-examine the term « Americanization » often used by historians in a unidirectional way. Furthermore, the love relationships that flourished between Frenchwomen and Sammies and the marriages that ensued offer the opportunity to reflect on a dialogue about gendered identities on either side of the ocean. Bringing a new light on the economic, social and cultural history of a zone at the back of the Great War, this study places the Central-West region in a connected history, on a scale that is international, thanks to county, communal and national archives
Pujo, Pauline. "Transmettre l'histoire pour former les citoyens : écriture et réécriture des livres d'histoire pour la jeunesse dans l'espace germanophone et en France (1760-1800)". Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040195.
Texto completoIn a time of political upheaval in the Germanies and France, the transmission of historical knowledge underwent a profound transformation that affected its aims, its contents as well as its methods. In earlier periods, history was a collection of examples written as a guide for future sovereigns in order to compensate for their lack of experience. Between 1760 and 1800, an increasing proportion of the population was integrated into the political sphere, especially through gradual reforms in education in the emerging nation states. German and French authors copied, rewrote, synthesized, compiled and expanded upon one another's handbooks or children's books. They also reused and updated older teaching material, thus helping to redefine citizenship. Two forms of historical representation are analyzed: firstly, collections of exemplary stories – and through them the changing relationships between morality and politics. Secondly, such educational tools as timelines and more elaborated forms of historical overviews highlight the links between political models and the presentation of historical facts. Between emancipation and discipline, both forms induced different uses and reading modes from educator and pupil respectively. These uses could be modified according to the functions assigned to the transmission of history in the various political contexts: the training of future officials, the awakening of patriotic enthusiasm in the citizen-soldier or the introduction to a critical reading of the press for young adults – functions that implied a wide range of inclusive or exclusive definitions of citizenship
Bothereau, Benjamin. "À la lanterne ! Modes d’existence d’un objet banal, entre imaginaire technique et politique. Invention, économie urbaine, publics et circulations du «réverbère», Paris, Barcelone, XVIIIe s". Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PSLEH152.
Texto completoOur culture has trivialized the streetlamp and deprived it of its meanings. However, the lantern became a visual and semantic revolutionary leitmotiv at the end of the 18th c.As a technical innovation of 18th c streetlighting, the lantern à réverbères optimizes the luminous intensity by using concave metal reflectors (réverbères) to direct the beam of light where needed. If the historiography focused on the Argand’s lamp, this research deals with a far less noble and valued technical element, the reflector. The entwinement of the innovation with narratives and cultural discourses structures its imaginary: artefact biography is therefore a precious tool to approach it, by getting rid of the subject-object distinction in order to question its modes of existence.Firstly, we study the genesis of the lantern and the inscription of its technical imaginary as a rationalized answer to the lighting challenge. To continue with, we analyse the streetlamp in action and its extramaterial properties through its integration to its milieu. Processes of mediation and their transformative power are the next focus, though the study of the technical (transcultural) circulations between France and Spain, and the media of advertising and promotion (technical press, trade cards), all of which shaping the interactions between the invention, the public and the markets. We finish this survey with the political lantern and its paradox, as the artefact, strongly linked to absolute monarchy and police– or military- control, became a revolutionary emblem. By entwining the technical and symbolic functions of the streetlamp, we want to shed light upon the resonances of the political imaginary within the lantern materiality. This study therefore aims at drawing attention to the multi-layered meanings of this so-called “banal” object, and at considering the streetlamp as a significant bearer of cultural identity

Texto completoThis dissertation is about the comparative historiography of women's history and gender history in China and in France from the 1980s on. It aims to compare for both historiographies the background of the intellectual emergences, the methods of research and historical writing (definitions, choice of subject and object, research paradigms, intellectual debates, translations and usages of key words and categories, models of periodization, influence of the Anglo-American historiography), and the temporality of productions and receptions (generations of researchers, temporalities of journals, associations and institutes, conferences, seminars, etc. ) in the institutionalization and pedagogical transmission. The dissertation particularly focuses on transnational circulations: whether they be dialogues, misunderstandings, or mutual complementarity. Based on works of the past thirty years, this doctoral research reflects on the categories and classifications used by the historians of both countries, in order to demonstrate the academic legitimacy of the comparative historiography of women, feminism and anti-feminism, and of gender through the method of connected categories

Texto completoThis thesis studies the international circulation of Chilean folk music’s during the second half of the 20th century. We discuss the international trajectory of singers and folk ensemble related to the Chilean Left, also their artistic practices, the space of musical circulation and the ways in which this folk music is welcomed by the general public, music critics, political organizations and media, including the left-wing press and labels. The geographical space of this circulation is constituted by the countries of Western Europe. The study period is circumscribed by two significant moments for the international circulation of Chilean folklore: the first trip to Europe of folk singer Violeta Parra in 1954 and the end of the exile of Chilean musicians in 1988. For more than 30 years, the musicians have been interacting extensively with the diverse artistic and political contexts of Europe. The first part of the thesis studies the activities that Chilean musicians performed in Europe between 1954 and the government of Salvador Allende (1970–1973), in a context of a strong exotic look towards the music of America Latin. The second part examines the artistic activities taking place between 1968 and 1982, when the political events of Chile locate the cultural manifestations, including the folklore, in a privileged place of the artistic circuits of the European left. Finally, the third part examines the artistic experiences developed between 1978 and 1988, and analyzes the repercussions that life in exile has on the practice of Chilean folklore in Europe, notably the questioning of the role of politics
