Resumen
Bordering Tibetan Languages: Making and Marking Languages in Transnational High Asia examines the complex interactions between state, ethnic, and linguistic borders in the Himalaya. These case studies from Bhutan, China, India, and Nepal show how people in the Himalaya talk borders into existence, and also how those borders speak to them and their identities. These ‘talking borders’ exist in a world where state borders are contested, and which is being irrevocably transformed by rapid social and economic change. This book offers a new perspective on this dynamic region by centring language, and in doing so, also offers new ways of thinking about how borders and language influence each other.

Walters, Holly. Shaligram Pilgrimage in the Nepal Himalayas. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463721721.

Texto completo
Resumen
For roughly two thousand years, the veneration of sacred fossil ammonites, called Shaligrams, has been an important part of Hindu and Buddhist ritual practice throughout South Asia and among the global Diaspora. Originating from a single remote region of Himalayan Nepal, called Mustang, Shaligrams are all at once fossils, divine beings, and intimate kin with families and worshippers. Through their lives, movements, and materiality, Shaligrams then reveal fascinating new dimensions of religious practice, pilgrimage, and politics. But as social, environmental, and national conflicts in the politically-contentious region of Mustang continue to escalate, the geologic, mythic, and religious movements of Shaligrams have come to act as parallels to the mobility of people through both space and time. Shaligram mobility therefore traverses through multiple social worlds, multiple religions, and multiple nations revealing Shaligram practitioners as a distinct, alternative, community struggling for a place in a world on the edge.

Resumen
This edited collection explores the contemporary proliferation of roads in South Asia and the Tibet-Himalaya region, showing how new infrastructures simultaneously create fresh connections and reinforce existing inequalities. Bringing together ethnographic studies on the social politics of road development and new mobilities in 21st-century Asia, it demonstrates that while new roads generate new forms of hierarchy, older forms of hierarchy are remade and re-established in creative and surprising new ways. Focused on South Asia but speaking to more global phenomena, the chapters collectively reveal how road planning, construction and usage routinely yield a simultaneous reinforcement and disruption of social, political, and economic relations.

Resumen
The introduction begins with a brief overview of Rangjung Dorje’s life. It describes his birth in the high Himalaya in southern Tibet, his recognition as the reincarnation of the second Karmapa, Karma Pakshi (1204–1283), his studies, his teaching and meditation career, and his journey to the Mongolian capitals of Dadu and Xanadu. It then gives an overview of the book’s primary topic, Tibet’s reincarnation traditions and institutions, and outlines Rangjung Dorje’s role in their invention. The introduction next describes the book’s theoretical framework; it highlights the book’s use of the New Historicist approach to Rangjung Dorje’s writings and its focus on the twin themes of time and place in his writing. A final overview explains that part 1 will examine several phenomena key to the reincarnation tradition’s development and part 2 will analyze how they influenced Rangjung Dorje’s life story.
