Resumen
Using the conceptual peculiarity of Bourdieu's theory, in this paper we aim to provide a new theoretical contribution to the understanding of the relational dynamics of legitimation in entrepreneurship. In-depth, contextual examination of entrepreneurs in 70 companies in the computer programming industry was carried out to determine how legitimation practices are shaped in relation to the dynamics of the relationship between entrepreneurs and the social structure. We base the methodological strength of the research on the rigour of the grounded theory method, using multiple data sources and data collection techniques (in-depth interviews, observations, and qualitative and quantitative secondary data). Our results reveal that susceptibility to hysteresis of habitus is what strongly defines the directions of the search for legitimation. By elucidating them, we show the natural coexistence of entrepreneur profiles of conflicting legitimation strategies, while also contributing to the understanding of shaping the entrepreneurial habitus in the high velocity field.

Resumen
Domestic violence (DV) manifests itself in different forms, given the specific dynamics of the relationship between the perpetrator and the victim. In addition to partner violence, child abuse and violence against the elderly, in recent years scientists have focused on the violent behaviour of juveniles towards other family members. The results of the research unequivocally point out the victimisation of juveniles as a risk factor for their violent behaviour towards parents and siblings. The paper aims to present a part of the research findings on juvenile domestic violence in Serbia on the connection between the victimisation of juveniles and their violent behaviour towards family members. The research was conducted on a sample of 1335 students of elementary (7th and 8th grade) and high (all grades) schools in Belgrade and Novi Sad. The results show a high prevalence of domestic violence committed by juveniles and a high prevalence of their victimisation by domestic violence. Additionally, the findings indicate a possibility of prediction of juvenile domestic violence, with the experience of victimisation as the most significant predictor of all risk factors that were tested.

Resumen
Limited number of studies have explored role of locus of control (LoC) in job search. In this study, involving over fourteen thousand participants enrolled in retraining courses, we examined the role of LoC in individuals' responses to a hypothetical job offer located 100 km away from their current place of residence. Results indicated that internal locus of control predicted a positive response to the job offer and the tendency to seek additional information about the job offer. In addition, the internal locus of control predicted worries and the automatic rejection of job offers negatively. Conversely, the external locus of control predicted worries and a tendency to reject job offer positively and engagement in further seeking of information and positive reactions to job offer negatively. However, the size of the effects was small, indicating a need to continue the search for predictors of the reaction to the job offer. Neither type of locus of control was found to be associated with seeking advice from friends or family.

Resumen
In this study, we examined perceived efficacy in solving marital conflicts as a mediator between adult attachment style and dyadic adjustment, while controlling for the effects of duration of marriage. A total of 1921 married women participated in the research. The results suggest that women with high attachment avoidance are more likely to perceive themselves as inefficient in marital conflict resolution and maladjusted to the dyadic relationship, compared to women with high attachment anxiety. Furthermore, the results suggest that perceived efficacy in solving marital conflicts mediates the effects of insecure attachment styles on dyadic adjustment. Finally, there is evidence for a reciprocal causation between efficacy expectations and dyadic adjustment.

Resumen
The microwave (MW) technology has become crucial in "high speed cooking" equipment. This new generation of cooker is still being refined and still finding its place in today's kitchens, but it is clear that these new high speed ovens can cook a wide variety of products and cook them faster than anything previously on the market. In ordinary cooking, heat is applied to the outside of food and it gradually penetrates to the inside. In MW cooking, the heat is generated within the food. Thus, a shorter heating time and a higher efficiency are some of the benefits of this technology. MW cooking is rapid, but non-uniform. MW heating is non-uniform mainly because of the inherently uneven distribution of the electromagnetic (EM) field inside the oven cavity. As the energy penetrates a lossy material, it is absorbed and less of it remains to penetrate further. Thus, energy absorption is non-uniform. Moreover, the energy absorption process is strongly affected by shape, size, dielectric properties of materials, position of the workload, as well as by the cavity geometry and dimensions. MW heating systems must provide uniform heating to obtain high quality products and avoid the so-called hot spots and cold spots. Traditionally, the temperature uniformity is accomplished by moving parts within the applicator, using mode stirrers, employing turntable or a combination of these techniques. Unfortunately, these techniques are not applicable within all type of resonant cavities. Other techniques which do not involve moving parts are: the pulsing MW energy or the phase shifting for different sources of MW energy. The phase shift technique and its effects on the EM field distribution and heating of a workload is discussed in the Thesis. The study of MW power sources has increased popularity among researchers in the field of cooking systems. In the last few years the innovative high frequency power solid state devices has gained much attention in place of magnetron due to their higher performances. In particular, a more careful control of the cooking process, which guarantees a more uniform heating of the foodstuff, can be achieved by using the solid state devices. This result can be reached, for instance, by using a properly phase shift for different sources of MW energy and it is discussed in the Thesis. Another solution, that is examined, involves the use of slots in the waveguide wall, which radiate EM energy from the waveguide. Since a multi slotted waveguide can be considered as an antenna array, a proper design of the slotted waveguide antennas, which feed the launch box and the MW applicator, is proposed in order to attain a more uniform temperature distribution without the need of moving parts. The effectiveness of the aforementioned technical solutions has been verified by means of numerical simulations on a test case model of practical interest, named "panini grill". The use of MW technology ensures a sandwich is heated through without a cold centre while reducing cooking time significantly. In the 3D numerical model two physical phenomena, i.e. EM wave propagation and heat transport, are coupled together by the thermal effects of MW energy deposition and the temperature-dependent material parameters. The coupled problem is solved by means of a FEA commercial software (COMSOL). In order to achieve the design parameters for the slotted waveguide feeding system and the phase shifting, which guarantee the more uniform hating, an optimization problem has been solved. More specifically, a metamodels-based optimization method has been set up. The metamodels can significantly reduce the problem complexity and simulation time. The optimization procedure has been characterized by pre-processing, programming, and post-processing coupling COMSOL Multiphysics and Matlab software.

Mass customization (MC), meant as providing customized products and services without considerable trade-offs in cost, delivery and quality, continues to arouse widespread interest among both practitioners and academic researchers. Based on the degree of product customization that a firm aims to provide to its customers, different types of MC strategy are distinguished in literature, and the choice of the degree of product customization is widely recognized as a key strategic decision in the pursuit of MC. Besides MC, another increasingly important challenge for today’s companies is to leverage the full potential of their human resources. A viable approach to achieving this goal is high-involvement, which is characterized by a set of internally coherent human-resource-management (HRM) practices that support the participation of lower-level employees in the business as a whole. Even though the importance of designing specific HRM systems for MC has long been recognized in literature, no studies have examined the impact of high involvement on MC capability from the contingent configurational perspective that is advocated by the literature of strategic HRM. To narrow this research gap, the present dissertation develops, tests and finds empirical support for the following two hypotheses: that the adoption of the coherent set of HRM practices that characterize high involvement improves MC capability (configurational perspective) and that the effectiveness of this configuration of practices in enhancing MC capability is influenced by the company's strategic decision on the degree of product customization to be provided to customers (contingency perspective). In light of the moderating effect that this strategic choice is found to have on the relationship between high involvement and MC capability, the final part of the dissertation empirically examines the impacts of a number of environmental factors on this decision and identifies the dynamism of customer demands as a key factor that pushes firms to increase the degree of product customization they provide to their customers.

2009/2010
The thesis describes the study on the characterization of the percussive ventilator; the activities have been carried out in cooperation with the “D.A.I. di Medicina Perioperatoria, Terapia Intensiva ed Emergenza - UCO di Anestesia, Rianimazione e Terapia Antalgica dell'Azienda Mista Universitaria - Ospedaliera di Trieste”. The first chapter describes the physiology of the respiratory system and the classical models presented in literature, the second chapter illustrates the main modes of mechanical ventilation, particularly in the percussive ventilation. The third chapter describes the classical laboratory equipment for the measurement of breathing. The fourth chapter examines the state of the art of methods and instruments for the analysis of respiratory parameters. The fifth chapter discusses the instruments for measuring respiratory parameters, developed in the biomedical laboratory of the DEEI of University of Trieste. The sixth chapter contains a detailed study on the characterization of the percussive ventilator: the model, the method for estimating parameters, the system tests and the results. Particularly, the ability to monitor respiratory parameters by using the instrument developed avoids the volutrauma (alveolar-capillary permeability increase owing to excessive distension of the lung) during controlled ventilation. The instrument also allows to accurately estimate the lung elastance, determining factor of the volume distribution in the used model. At the conclusion of the work, the seventh chapter summarizes the results from the study of the volumes distribution in the two-compartment model of the lung conditioned to percussive ventilation.

Moreover, in recent years it is possible to integrate a complex electronic system, equivalent to millions of transistors, into a single silicon chip: System-on-a-Chip (SoC). The design of a complex SoC can’t be managed by traditional design methods but requires system-level efficient modeling methodologies and high-level synthesis tools (High Level Synthesis - HLS) that generate an optimized RTL architecture from high-level functional specifications. The latest versions of HLS tools have made significant advances that make it possible to consider including the HLS methodology in the design flow. The use of HLS allows the management of complex systems, while ensuring high performance, leading to the increase in productivity. The research presents complex projects as case studies for both modeling and high-level synthesis, including comparison of HLS solutions with respect to design using traditional methodology. Several solutions have implemented with increasing degrees of complexity, to verify the limits of the system-level design methodology. Finally, a functioning system has been implemented on FPGA which provides for the integration of components designed using different methods. Part of the research was carried out in collaboration with Korg Italy, based in Osimo (AN), which provided know-how and advice regarding the field of application of digital synthesis of musical signals.

Paggi, Giulia.

It is going to be evaluated the availability of the MC process, particularly the Sweeping Gas Membrane Distillation (SGMD), to perform the regeneration of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) from diammonium phosphate (DAP) and the study of the main parameters to perform the scale up of the process to an industrial level. Making focus on the selection and characterization of suitable membranes for the process and the design-development of SGMD pilot plant and test for the evaluation of the operative parameters. The main requirement for the MC technology application is bank on suitable membranes for the process. This must act as a barrier for one of the phases on contact and should enable the mass transport of volatile components. For operative reasons is preferable to hold back the aqueous phase, making the use of hydrophobic membranes imperative. The hydrophobic membrane character of the membranes is a critical argument for the MC process and is one of the main drawback for the massive application of this technology. Many studies to evaluate the hydrophobic character have been performed and continues to be a trend topic on the MC scenario. However few studies have been done to evaluate the variation of the hydrophobicity with the temperature and none of them to evaluate the effect of temperature above the normal water boiling point.

In Anna Seghers’ short story, Gita delle ragazze morte (1943-1944) and in Claudio Magris’ Esterno giorno – Val Rosandra (1982), a group of high school friends and their trip on the eve of World War I provide the narrative nucleus around which individual micro-histories meet macro-history. In the proposed analysis, the reason for the deprivation is identified as an element common to the two texts. In Seghers’ story, the temporal distance is cancelled out in a continuum, whereas Magris’ story operates through multiplication and fading between different typologies of texts: novel, screenplay, film, Goethe’s Faust, and short story.

Resumen
The essay focuses on the modalities adopted by Magris in his novel, Alla cieca, to merge literature and civil engagement through a fine narrative construction. By populating his writing with precise documentary research and taking advantage of the possibilities of invention, the author succeeds in giving voice to minimum destinies of History and save their high moral lesson. This can also be seen through a comparative reading of the pages of the novel dealing with Tito’s gulag, Goli Otok, and Scotti’s book, which is a historical reconstruction provided by witnesses of the events suffered by Italians who lived there.

Resumen
This contribution proposes some general observations on gendered language in a public context. Some specific issues are discussed: 1) language can be neither the only nor the main tool for a truly inclusive society, for which it is rather necessary to raise the level of average culture; 2) the public language has to refer to standard Italian in order to guarantee transparency for all citizens (even of those who do not have a high level of linguistic competence and therefore cannot handle exogenous changes in structure) 3) the unmarked masculine in certain contexts is however an inclusive strategy that in Italian is embedded in an articulated system of solutions that are not always based on the grammatical masculine (such as the use of feminine persona).

Resumen
The use of digital devices in education is increasing. The literature, however, reveals a disadvantage of digital compared to paper in performing specific learning tasks, in particular text comprehension, which is probably sustained by a different cognitive load and a tendency to use digital for superficial and fast reading. The present study investigates possible differences between paper and digital text comprehension in children of school-age by analysing the role of Executive Functions (EF) as mediating factors in performance. 175 children in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade were assessed for text comprehension in the two modes and assessed with EF tests. The results show that there are no differences between digital and paper text comprehension. However, dividing the sample into children with low and children with high levels of text comprehension, the former group is seen to benefit from digital compared to the latter group, which shows an opposite trend. Furthermore, the low performers score worse than high performers in the EF measures which show a mediating role between performance level and differences between paper and digital modes in text comprehension. The present study has important educational implications for the use of digital devices in education.

The site has been inhabited since Neolitic to high Middle Age. The only intervention with a value had place at the end of the XX century, when the archeological area between Porto Perone and Porto Saturo was submitted to restoration, valorization and fruition works. The area of the Parco Archeologico di Saturo has been usable just for few years, collapsing in a terrible abandonment situation. Just in 2006 the area began to develop new interest.

Resumen
This essay presents a comprehensive profile of Natalino Radovich, both personal and scientific. Radovich succeeded Evel Gasparini in the Chair of Slavic Philology at Padua, having initiated his career at the I.U.O. in Naples. As a scholar, he successfully integrated linguistics (specifically historical-comparative) and ecdotics into his scientific work. His approach aligns with the traditions of European Universities originating from Vienna, including Ljubljana, where Radovich commenced his university education. His contributions, which embrace the most innovative aspects of linguistic research of his era, ranging from structuralism to computational linguistics, affirm the high quality of Slavic studies in Padua and their significant role within the Italian academic landscape.

Resumen
Aim 1: To determine levels of this second messenger in: a) B. melitensiscyclic-dimericguanosinemonophosphate-regulating mutants (BMEI1448, BMEI1453, and BMEI1520), and b) B. melitensis16M (wild type) and mutant infections of macrophages and immune competent mice. (US lab primary) Aim 2: To determine proteomic differences between Brucelladeletion mutants BMEI1453 (high cyclic-dimericguanosinemonophosphate, chronic persistent state) and BMEI1520 (low cyclicdimericguanosinemonophosphate, acute virulent state) compared to wild type B. melitensisto identify the role of this second messenger in establishing the two polar states of brucellosis. (US lab primary with synergistic assistance from the Israel lab Aim 3: Determine the level of Brucellacyclic-dimericguanosinemonophosphate and transcriptional expression from naturally infected placenta. (Israel lab primary with synergistic assistance from the US lab). B. Background Brucellaspecies are Gram-negative, facultative intracellular bacterial pathogens that cause brucellosis, the most prevalent zoonosis worldwide. Brucellosis is characterized by increased abortion, weak offspring, and decreased milk production in animals. Humans are infected with Brucellaby consuming contaminated milk products or via inhalation of aerosolized bacteria from occupational hazards. Chronic human infections can result in complications such as liver damage, orchitis, endocarditis, and arthritis. Brucellaspp. have the ability to infect both professional and non-professional phagocytes. Because of this, Brucellaencounter varied environments both throughout the body and within a cell and must adapt accordingly. To date, few virulence factors have been identified in B. melitensisand even less is known about how these virulence factors are regulated. Subsequently, little is known about how Brucellaadapt to its rapidly changing environments, and how it alternates between acute and chronic virulence. Our studies suggest that decreased concentrations of cyclic dimericguanosinemonophosphate (c-di-GMP) lead to an acute virulent state and increased concentrations of c-di-GMP lead to persistent, chronic state of B. melitensisin a mouse model of infection. We hypothesize that B. melitensisuses c-di-GMP to transition from the chronic state of an infected host to the acute, virulent stage of infection in the placenta where the bacteria prepare to infect a new host. Studies on environmental pathogens such as Vibrio choleraeand Pseudomonas aeruginosasupport a mechanism where changes in c-di-GMP levels cause the bacterium to alternate between virulent and chronic states. Little work exists on understanding the role of c-di-GMP in dangerous intracellular pathogens, like Brucellathat is a frequent pathogen in Israeli domestic animals and U.S. elk and bison. Brucellamust carefully regulate virulence factors during infection of a host to ensure proper expression at appropriate times in response to host cues. Recently, the novel secondary signaling molecule c-di-GMP has been identified as a major component of bacterial regulation and we have identified c-di-GMP as an important signaling factor in B. melitensishost adaptation. C. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements 1. The B. melitensis1453 deletion mutant has increased c-di-GMP, while the 1520 deletion mutant has decreased c-di-GMP. 2. Both mutants grow similarly in in vitro cultures; however, the 1453 mutant has a microcolony phenotype both in vitro and in vivo 3. The 1453 mutant has increased crystal violet staining suggesting biofilm formation. 4. Scanning electron microscopy revealed an abnormal coccus appearance with in increased cell area. 5. Proteomic analysis revealed the 1453 mutant possessed increased production of proteins involved in cell wall processes, cell division, and the Type IV secretion system, and a decrease in proteins involved in amino acid transport/metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, fatty acid production, and iron acquisition suggesting less preparedness for intracellular survival. 6. RNAseq analysis of bone marrow derived macrophages infected with the mutants revealed the host immune response is greatly reduced with the 1453 mutant infection. These findings support that microlocalization of proteins involved in c-di-GMP homeostasis serve a second messenger to B. melitensisregulating functions of the bacteria during infection of the host.

Resumen
The oil palm is an economically important crop due to its high productivity and broad industrial applicability (Sabate 2016). In Colombia, this crop is grown in di erent agro-ecological zones (Borrerio 2018) where the environmental conditions are favorable to several insect pests. One of the most economically important pests is the fruit scraper Demotispa neivai (Bondar, 1940) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) (Aldana et al. 2004). To control this pest, CENIPALMA isolated in Colombia (Barrancabermeja), and selected the strain of Metarhizium anisopliae CPMa1502 as a new active principle for biological control because it showed the highest mortality on adults of D. neivai (87.7%) on laboratory conditions (Aldana et al. 2004, Bustillo, 2014; Montes et al. 2016). Temperature and UVB radiation are factors that can a ect the mass production and biocontrol activity of the fungus. The evaluation of its in uence is an important part of the development of a future bioproduct. This work evaluated the conidia tolerance to di erent stress conditions of temperature (20, 25, 30, 35°C) and several exposure times of UVB radiation, measuring conidial vigor and germination, cellular viability, and radial growth rate.

Resumen
The eucalyptus snout beetle, Gonipterus spp. are a pest of Eucalyptus stands in the world causing serious economic loses. Gonipterus platensis (Figure 1) was ¬rst reported in Antioquia (Colombia) in 2016, by the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario –ICA (ICA, 2016), threatening more than 60.000 ha planted with eucalyptus around the country. Classical biological control of these species has worked in some countries using the egg parasitoids Anaphes nitens (Girault) and Anaphes inexpectatus Huber & Prinsloo, 1990 (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) and complemented with di erent natural enemies (NE) in some countries (Nascimento et al. 2017). A. nitens had been reported with high e cency ¬nding G. scutellatus egg masses reaching a parasitism rate of 80–100% of eggs in North west Spain (Rivera et al. 1999). It is necessary to know Gonipterus platensis NE, including the presence of A. nitens and A. inexpectatus, in local conditions so integrated pest management programs could be designed. This is the ¬rst survey of the NE for G. platensis in Colombia.

Resumen
Herein the matrix effects on the kinetics of aqueous photolysis for the individual munitions constituents of IMX-101: nitroguanidine (NQ), dinitroanisole (DNAN), and nitrotriazolone (NTO) are reported along with the environmentally relevant kinetics and quantum yields. Photolysis potentially represents a major degradation pathway for these munitions in the environment and further understanding the complex matrices effects on photolytic kinetics was needed. Aqueous systems are of particular interest due to the high solubility of NQ (3,800 ppm) and NTO (16,642 ppm) compared to the traditional munitions trinitrotoluene (TNT, 100.5 ppm) and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX, 59.9 ppm). Environmental half-lives (and quantum yields) were found to be 0.44 days, 0.83 days, and 4.4 days for NQ, DNAN, and NTO, respectively, under natural sunlight. In laboratory experiments using nominally 300 nm bulbs in a merry-go-round style reactor in DI water the relative rate of photolysis for the three munitions constituents followed the same order NQ > DNAN > NTO, where DNAN and NTO reacted 57 and 115 times more slowly, respectively, than NQ. In the various environmentally relevant matrices tested in the laboratory experiments NQ was not significantly affected, DNAN showed a faster degradation with increasing ionic strength, and NTO showed a modest salinity and pH dependence on its rate of photolysis.

Resumen
At national and aggregate levels, COVID-19 vaccination across G7 countries appears successful. To date, 79.4% of the total population of G7 countries have received a first dose, 72.9% a second, and 45.4% a booster shot (28th April 2022 data). In France, 80.6% of the total population has had a first dose, 78.2 % have had two doses, and 55.4% have had their booster jabs (28th of April 2022 data). In the UK, 79.3% of the total population has received one dose, 74.1% a second one, and 58.5% have received a booster. In Italy, 85.2% of the total population has had a first dose, 80.4% have had two doses, and 66.5% have had their booster jabs (28th of April 2022 data). These figures indicate enthusiasm across G7 countries for COVID-19 vaccines. Yet high overall vaccination rates at the national level, disguise significant in-country disparities. For example, by the end of 2021, less than 50% of residents of the Northern Districts of Marseille were vaccinated, compared with over 70% in wealthier neighbourhoods. In the Ealing borough of Northwest London, 70% of the eligible population has had a first dose – which is almost 10% percent below the national average (4th of April 2022 data). Disparities are also seen in other urban metropolises across the G7. This brief investigates these disparities through the lens of “vaccine (in)equity”, focusing on the role of local actors. It builds on ethnographic and qualitative research carried out in the Northern Districts of Marseille and ongoing research engagement around vaccine equity in Ealing (Northwest London), as well as qualitative research carried out in Italy among networks of healthcare providers, intercultural mediators, and civil society organizations that collaborated during the COVID-19 campaign in the Emilia Romagna region and in Rome. This brief is based on research conducted between October and December 2021 in Marseille and ongoing engagement in Ealing which started in May 2021. It identified how local governments, health actors, community groups and residents play key roles in shaping vaccine (in)equity. This brief was developed for SSHAP by Santiago Ripoll (IDS), Tabitha Hrynick (IDS), Ashley Ouvrier (LaSSA), Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), Federico Federici (UCL) and Elizabeth Storer (LSE). It was reviewed by Eloisa Franchi (Università degli Studi di Pavia) and Ellen Schwartz (Hackney Council Public Health). The research was funded through the British Academy COVID-19 Recovery: G7 Fund (COVG7210038). Research was based at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Susssex, and the Laboratoire de Sciences Sociales Appliquées (LaSSA). The brief is the responsibility of SSHAP.

Resumen
Original Objectives 1. To determine the Brucella genes that lead to chronic macrophage infection. 2. To identify Brucella genes that contribute to infection. 3. To confirm the importance of Brucella genes in macrophages and placental cells by mutational analysis. Background Brucella spp. is a Gram-negative facultative intracellular bacterium that infects ruminants causing abortion or birth of severely debilitated animals. Brucellosis continues in Israel, caused by B. melitensis despite an intensive eradication campaign. Problems with the Rev1 vaccine emphasize the need for a greater understanding of Brucella pathogenesis that could improve vaccine designs. Virulent Brucella has developed a successful strategy for survival in its host and transmission to other hosts. To invade the host, virulent Brucella establishes an intracellular niche within macrophages avoiding macrophage killing, ensuring its long-term survival. Then, to exit the host, Brucella uses placenta where it replicates to high numbers resulting in abortion. Also, Brucella traffics to the mammary gland where it is secreted in milk. Missing from our understanding of brucellosis is the surprisingly lillie basic information detailing the mechanisms that permit bacterial persistence in infected macrophages (chronic infection) and dissemination to other animals from infected placental cells and milk (acute infection). Microarray analysis is a powerful approach to determine global gene expression in bacteria. The close genomic similarities of Brucella species and our recent comparative genomic studies of Brucella species using our B. melitensis microarray, suqqests that the data obtained from studying B. melitensis 16M would enable understanding the pathogenicity of other Brucella organisms, particularly the diverse B. melitensis variants that confound Brucella eradication in Israel. Conclusions Results from our BARD studies have identified previously unknown mechanisms of Brucella melitensis pathogenesis- i.e., response to blue light, quorum sensing, second messenger signaling by cyclic di-GMP, the importance of genomic island 2 for lipopolysaccharide in the outer bacterial membrane, and the role of a TIR domain containing protein that mimics a host intracellular signaling molecule. Each one of these pathogenic mechanisms offers major steps in our understanding of Brucella pathogenesis. Strikingly, our molecular results have correlated well to the pathognomonic profile of the disease. We have shown that infected cattle do not elicit antibodies to the organisms at the onset of infection, in correlation to the stealth pathogenesis shown by a molecular approach. Moreover, our field studies have shown that Brucella exploit this time frame to transmit in nature by synchronizing their life cycle to the gestation cycle of their host succumbing to abortion in the last trimester of pregnancy that spreads massive numbers of organisms in the environment. Knowing the bacterial mechanisms that contribute to the virulence of Brucella in its host has initiated the agricultural opportunities for developing new vaccines and diagnostic assays as well as improving control and eradication campaigns based on herd management and linking diagnosis to the pregnancy status of the animals. Scientific and Agricultural Implications Our BARD funded studies have revealed important Brucella virulence mechanisms of pathogenesis. Our publication in Science has identified a highly novel concept where Brucella utilizes blue light to increase its virulence similar to some plant bacterial pathogens. Further, our studies have revealed bacterial second messengers that regulate virulence, quorum sensing mechanisms permitting bacteria to evaluate their environment, and a genomic island that controls synthesis of its lipopolysaccharide surface. Discussions are ongoing with a vaccine company for application of this genomic island knowledge in a Brucella vaccine by the U.S. lab. Also, our new technology of bioengineering bioluminescent Brucella has resulted in a spin-off application for diagnosis of Brucella infected animals by the Israeli lab by prioritizing bacterial diagnosis over serological diagnosis.

Resumen
In the 21st century, business engagements are becoming increasingly global, and global teams are now an established form of organising work in multinational organisations. As a result, managing cultural diver-sity within a global team has become an essential part of ensuring motivation, creativity, innovation and efficiency in today’s business world.Global teams are typically composed of a diversity of experiences, frames of references, competencies, information and, not least, cultural backgrounds. As such, they hold a unique potential for delivering high performance in terms of innovative and creative approaches to global management tasks; however, in-stead of focusing on the potentials of cultural diversity, practitioners and studies of global teams tend to approach cultural diversity as a barrier to team success. This study explores some of the barriers that cultural diversity poses but also discusses its potential to leverage high performance in a global context. Our study highlights the importance of how team leaders and team members perceive ‘culture’ as both a concept and a social practice. We take issue with a notion of culture as a relatively fixed and homogeneous set of values, norms and attitudes shared by people of national communities; it is such a notion of culture that tends to underlie understandings that highlight the irreconcilability of cultural differences.Applying a more dynamic and context-dependent approach to culture as a meaning system that people negotiate and use to interpret the world, this study explores how global leadership teams can best reap the benefits of cultural diversity in relation to specific challenging areas of intercultural team work, such as leadership style, decision making, relationship building, strategy process, and communication styles. Based on a close textual interpretation of 31 semi-structured interviews with members of global leader-ship teams in eight Danish-owned global companies, our study identified different discourses and per-ceptions of culture and cultural diversity. For leaders of the global leadership teams (Danish/European) and other European team members, three understandings of cultural diversity in their global teams were prominent:1)Cultural diversity was not an issue2)Cultural diversity was acknowledged as mainly a liability. Diversities were expressed through adifference in national cultures and could typically be subsumed under a relatively fixed numberof invariable and distinct characteristics.3)Cultural diversity was an asset and expressions of culture had to be observed in the situationand could not simply be derived from prior understandings of cultural differences.A clear result of our study was that those leaders of global teams who drew on discourses of the Asian ‘Other’ adherred to the first two understandings of cultural diversity and preferred leadership styles that were either patriarchal or self-defined as ‘Scandinavian’. Whereas those leaders who drew on discourses of culture as dynamic and negotiated social practices adhered to the third understanding of cultural di-versity and preferred a differentiated and analytical approach to leading their teams. We also focused on the perceptions of team members with a background in the country in which the global teams were co-located. These ‘local’ team members expressed a nuanced and multifaceted perspective on their own cultural background, the national culture of the company, and their own position within the team, which enabled them to easily navigate between essentialist perceptions of culture while maintain-ing a critical stance on the existing cultural hegemonies. They recognised the value of their local knowledge and language proficiency, but, for those local members in teams with a negative or essentialist view of cultural diversity, it was difficult to obtain recognition of their cultural styles and specific, non-local competences. 3Our study suggeststhat the way global team members perceive culture, based on dominant societal dis-courses of culture, significantly affects the understandings of roles and positions in global leadership teams. We found that discourses on culture were used to explain differences and similarities between team members, which profoundly affected the social practicesand dynamics of the global team. We con-clude that only global teams with team leaders who are highly aware of the multiple perspectives at play in different contexts within the team hold the capacity to be alert to cultural diversity and to demonstrate agility in leveraging differences and similarities into inclusive and dynamic team practices.

Resumen
The Indiana Dunes (comprised of 15 geographic units (see Figure 1) which include Indiana Dunes National Park, Dunes State Park, and adjacent Shirley Heinze Land Trust properties) are remarkable in the Midwest and Great Lakes region for the vascular plant diversity, with an astounding 1,212 native plant species in an area of approximately 16,000 acres! This high plant diversity is the result of the interactions among postglacial migrations, the variety of soil substrates, moisture conditions, topography, successional gradients, ?re regimes, proximity to Lake Michigan, and light levels. This richness is all the more signi?cant given the past human alterations of the landscape resulting from logging; conversion to agriculture; construction of transportation corridors, industrial sites, and residential communities; ?re suppression; land abandonment; and exotic species invasions. Despite these impacts, multiple natural areas supporting native vegetation persist. Thus, each of the 15 units of the Indiana Dunes presents up to eight subunits varying in human disturbance and consequently in ?oristic richness. Of the most signi?cant units of the park in terms of number of native species, Cowles Dunes and the Dunes State Park stand out from all the other units, with 786 and 686 native species, respectively. The next highest ranked units for numbers of native species include Keiser (630), Furnessville (574), Miller Woods (551), and Hoosier Prairie (542). The unit with lowest plant richness is Heron Rookery (220), with increasing richness in progression from Calumet Prairie (320), Hobart Prairie Grove (368), to Pinhook Bog (380). Signi?cant natural areas, retaining native vegetation composition and structure, include Cowles Bog (Cowles Dunes Unit), Howes Prairie (Cowles Dunes), Dunes Nature Preserve (Dunes State Park), Dunes Prairie Nature Preserve (Dunes State Park), Pinhook Bog, Furnessville Woods (Furnessville), Miller Woods, Inland Marsh, and Mnoke Prairie (Bailly). Wilhelm (1990) recorded a total of 1,131 native plant species for the ?ora of the Indiana Dunes. This was similar to the 1,132 species recorded by the National Park Service (2014) for the Indiana Dunes. Based on the nomenclature of Swink and Wilhelm (1994), Indiana Dunes National Park has 1,206 native plant species. If we include native varieties and hybrids, the total increases to 1,244 taxa. Based on the nomenclature used for this report?the Flora of North America (FNA 2022), and the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS 2022)?Indiana Dunes National Park houses 1,206 native vascular plant species. As of this writing (2020), the Indiana Dunes is home to 37% of the species of conservation concern in Indiana (241 out of 624 Indiana-listed species): state extirpated = 10 species, state endangered = 75, and state threatened = 100. Thus, 4% of the state-listed species in the Indiana Dunes are extirpated, 31% endangered, and 41% threatened. Watch list and rare categories have been eliminated. Twenty-nine species once documented from the Indiana Dunes may be extirpated because they have not been seen since 2001. Eleven have not been seen since 1930 and 15 since 1978. If we exclude these species, then there would be a total of 1,183 species native to the Indiana Dunes. Many of these are cryptic in their life history or diminutive, and thus are di?cult to ?nd. Looking at the growth form of native plants, <1% (nine species) are clubmosses, 3% (37) are ferns, 8% (297) are grasses and sedges, 56% (682) are forbs or herbs, 1% (16) are herbaceous vines, <1% (7) are subshrubs (woody plants of herbaceous stature), 5% (60) are shrubs, 1% (11) are lianas (woody vines), and 8% (93) are trees. Of the 332 exotic species (species introduced from outside North America), 65% (219 species) are forbs such as garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), 15% (50 species) are graminoids such as phragmites (Phragmites australis ssp. australis), 2% (seven species) are vines such as ?eld bindweed (Convulvulus arvensis), <1% (two species) are subshrubs such as Japanese pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis), 8% (28 species) are shrubs such as Asian bush honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.), 1% (three species) are lianas such as oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), and 8% (23 species) are trees such as tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissimus). Of the 85 adventive species, native species that have invaded from elsewhere in North America, 14% (11 species) are graminoids such as broom sedge (Andropogon virginicus), 57% (48 species) are forbs such as fall phlox (Phlox paniculata), 5% (six species) are shrubs such as Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus), 3% (two species) are subshrubs such as holly leaved barberry (Berberis repens), 1% (one species) is a liana (trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans), 3% two species) are herbaceous vines such as tall morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea), and 17% (15 species) are trees such as American holly (Ilex opaca). A total of 436 species were found to be ?special? based on political rankings (federal and state-listed threatened and endangered species), species with charismatic ?owers, and those that are locally rare.
