Resumen
This research elaborates on the relationship between grace and faith and works in salvation based on a hermeneutic study of Ephesians 2:8-10. This research will focus more on how the concept of salvation remains relevant throughout the ages despite the many teachings of salvation that contradict the Word of God. The research method is based on a qualitative method built on a literature study approach and a biblical hermeneutic approach. This research uses inductive-descriptive biblical hermeneutic studies related to the subject matter as the basis of hermeneutic studies concerning the relationship between grace and faith and works in salvation. Based on the hermeneutic study of Ephesians 2:8-10, the author finds that every Christian needs to be reminded and taught about the grace of salvation so that they continue to grow in their spirituality by producing good fruit for the glory of God. Salvation by God's grace is the most fundamental teaching of the Christian faith and never changes throughout the ages. Grace and faith and works in salvation are inseparable parts of God's complete and holy design for sinful man who has saved him.

A hermeneutic of unity between beauty and virtue, inspired by the work of Gregory of Nazianzus, offers a way to seek the Holy Spirit’s presence in the apparent chasm between the church and the secular realm. This paper describes beauty’s role in Gregory of Nazianzus’ poetry and orations and analyzes how adopting Gregory’s hermeneutic of unity between beauty and virtue can strengthen the church’s relationship with the secular sphere. The paper’s second part draws on Karl Rahner’s conception of the anonymous Christian to detail how a willingness to recognize virtue’s beauty in the public sphere can open the ecclesial community to the Holy Spirit’s movement both within and beyond the church.

Resumen
In everyday life, one encounters many experiences of affliction that, for whatever reason, nature (ours or others’) cannot resolve. Yet, when nature’s finite resources are exhausted and hope seems in vain, humans often experience extra-ordinary moments of renewal and resolution—breakthroughs, remissions, insights, and conversions. We experience these moments in our natural existence; yet, we feel they cannot originate, cannot be attributed to nature alone. Rather, these experiences, called “graces” in Christianity, are attributed to a divine power acting in us. How do we come to describe these experiences in this way? Is it possible to formulate a general theory of these experiences as “graces”? Is there an “experience” of grace in general, a “state of grace”, which serves as ground and unifying experience for the “graces” we receive? Working from the Catholic theological point of view, this paper examines such experiences of affliction and renewal, as well as the basic Catholic framework schematizing them as found in the Bible and Catholic religious writings. In doing so, this paper highlights the theme of impossibility (absolutely or in context) underlying each experience, and broadly categorizes them as happening within three regions of human life: the external, ethical sphere, the interior self-relationship, and the vertical relationship to the Divine. In dialogue with theologians and phenomenological thinkers, general formulations of the experiences are placed within their respective spheres, and certain problems in the identification or interpretation of these experiences are identified. The paper then explores how the experience of a “New Creation” can serve not only as a label for the totality of these experiences, but also as a totalizing and overarching ground-experience of “grace” and an interpretive hermeneutic for graces in general. As a result, a graced moment of total personal “rebirth” or “recreation”, prevenient with respect to any personal co-operation or experiences of grace as grace, is identified as a potential ground for all other graces considered. Finally, this paper considers some potential implications of this account of grace for both Catholic thought and Phenomenology more generally.

Resumen
This paper explores the experience of grace in the interreligious dialogue activists. The involvement of Catholic activists in this movement can be a locus for the experience of grace. Several theologians have recently discussed grace in a historical dimension. One of the theologians of the Second Vatican Council, Karl Rahner, had the idea of the experience of grace. Martin Heidegger's phenomenological hermeneutic method explores the experience of the grace of Catholic activists. In-depth interviews were used as a data collection technique. The research subjects were two Catholics, the National Meeting of Indonesian Youth from the Youth Commission of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference and one Catholic Young Interfaith Peacemaker Community. The results' novelty shows that the research subjects did not recognize grace as an extraordinary phenomenon. Inspired by the Church's teachings, they understand that grace is experienced as a process of living life's roles, unique abilities, and gifts to become better. The study’s conclusion confirms that grace can be identified in everyday life and is not limited to a superstructure metaphysical idea.

Resumen
The article addresses the topic of the divinization of the human being in St. Augustine, presenting first of all, a summary of the reception of Augustinian thought in the Eastern world, highlighting the reductionist prejudice in this approach. Afterwards, a brief exposition of the role that grace plays in the thought of Saint Augustine is made, underlining the different nuances that this thought has in Augustine’s different stages. It also discusses the relationship between grace and divinization according to Augustinian thought, to also stress the importance of the idea of the Incarnation for St. Augustine as a hermeneutic criterion to understand divinization as a filiation, a filial quality that is diverse, for the Son of God and for the believer. The article finally presents grace as a divinizing justification, as a fullness of divine filiation according to Augustinian thought.

Resumen
This essay provides a close reading of Kierkegaard’s later signed text, For Self-Examination. While many of Kierkegaard’s pseudonymous texts often are selected for their philosophically explicit engagements with Hegelian philosophy, I use Hegel’s dialectic of lordship and bondage to draw out how Kierkegaard circumvents it in this one. I first provide historical context, noting how Kierkegaard turned to earnest works after his public humiliation in the Copenhagen newspaper, undermining his ability to deploy irony effectively. Second, I briefly develop Hegel’s lordship and bondage dialectic as a model for how selfhood is constituted through work and labor. Third, I dwell with a close reading of Kierkegaard’s book both in its composition and in its interpretation, bringing out how it donates grace rather than work (à la Hegel) to the reader’s attempt at self-realization. I conclude by noting one challenge to Kierkegaard’s ideal of addressing the “single individual” from the perspective of intersectional analysis.

Resumen
Interpretation or analysis of John 4:5-42 is numerous. However, perhaps a few works are done to analyze the interpretation done in different cultures and faith contexts, especially in Java. One of them is Serat Suluk Pawestri Samariyah that was written in 1921 in central Java. This article explores this Christian Kejawen or local spirituality text to understand the nuances and concepts underlying the text to enrich future contextualization and cross-cultural hermeneutic process. The approach of the study is the narrative interpretation method for both the Serat Suluk Pawestri Samariyah and John 4:4-42 to uncover the similarities, differences, and local concepts. As the result, it is found that in both texts Christ is narrated as He who took initiative to approach the Samaritan woman and to offer God’s grace. However, after someone receives the grace of the Living Water or Salvation, on the one side, Serat Suluk Pawestri Samariyah gives a holistic and practical way to conduct his or her life. Yet, on the other side, the text gives the impression that it teaches a dualistic view.

Abstract A unique Figure in the Orthodox Church, André Scrima was a bridge-personality among Christians and between Christianity and other religions. In his early works, bearing witness to a “spiritual inheritance” and a “blessing of grace” that he had personally received, he stressed the inner dimension of Eastern Christianity represented by Hesychastic spirituality – a perennial divine inspiration manifested across history. But both as a spiritual figure and a professor of comparative religion, he oriented his reflection toward considering the religious plurality of the world from a Christian perspective. Searching for the “lieu théologal” of hospitality for others’ spiritualities became one of the main purposes of Scrima’s reflections which occasionally dealt in a sympathetic as well as critical manner with Traditionalism. This paper aims to highlight the interest raised by an Orthodox reflection on the so-called “esoteric” side of his Tradition which leads to a hermeneutic of religious diversity.

Wells, Kyle Brandon. "Grace, obedience, and the hermeneutics of agency : Paul and his Jewish contemporaries on the transformation of the heart". Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/190/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines how convictions about gift and grace integrate with conceptions of agency and obedience for Paul and for his Jewish contemporaries. While post-Sanders scholarship has rightly noted the coexistence of grace and works in the Pauline and Jewish literature, it has failed to account for the diverse and sophisticated ways in which those two concepts can coexist. Following recent intertextual studies, this thesis argues that ancient Jews read descriptions of ‘heart-transformation’ in Deuteronomy 30, Jeremiah 31–32 and Ezekiel 36 as the solution to human ineptitude. Paul was no exception and his reading of those texts had a profound influence on his articulations of divine grace and human agency. On Paul’s complex understanding moral competence is dependent upon divine agency and divine and human agencies co-exist and coinhere in, but never outside of, Christ. Beyond advancing our understanding of the apostle’s agency dynamics, this thesis shows how Second Temple interpretations of texts that concern heart-transformation provide fruitful ways of comparing Paul and his contemporaries’ respective views regarding divine grace, human transformation, and humanity’s ability to obey God. While most Jews in this period did not set divine and human agency or grace and obedience in competition with one another, the precise forms grace took, the functions it performed, the spheres in which it operated, and the qualification for its receptions differed markedly and this would have contributed to vehement disagreements between Jews. Paul would not have been immune from such debates. While his views about grace and agency are not sui generis in every respect, he would have still appeared radical to most of his contemporaries.

Defaye, Christelle.

Reading a fiction by Gracq feels similar to lovers’ delight. To become a Gracq reader, you must accept to be delighted, captured and enchanted all at once. The hermeneutic dispossession experienced through Gracq’s fiction is clearly erotic. No matter how secondary, thin and sporadic, the theme of eroticism may be, it seems to be running throughout the lost profile of the text. All set up and cleared of its substance, the sexual scene disappears from the eyes of the reader-voyeur whose expectation is frustrated. Fiction manages to cover up sex by setting desire within the plot and the reading. The presence-absence of erotic fantasy, as stereotyped and obsessive as it may be, is best consecrated at the crossroads of three impossible matters: sex, women and death. Eroticism by Gracq turns out to be a void around which the reader is waltzing and that the writing manages to grasp. Is the path of eroticism aporetic? It is not that this path is a dead end but rather that the reader is invited to advance and digress in this aporia. Eroticism is always moved, buried within the palimpsest of the landscape. With his successive unmoulding and moulding of words, it becomes clear that language is eroticised with Gracq. He doesn’t picture sex, he features it in his text until it pleases him –all this in the other, that is to say the reader’s eyes. In Julien Gracq’s work, the libidinal issue of literarity is at stake: Gracq’s eroticism transfigures flesh into a pulpit. From sex to text, the author takes on a posture of seduction. The text forms a screen between him and the Other, that is to say the reader. Sex has become text, limen, a border, an essential in-between. It has become the hymen, a touching space between one and the other. The meeting, though often portrayed as impossible, can then happen

Appropriating literary works for year 11 / 10th grade french students Here, appropriation metaphorically refers to the process by which readers make a literary work their own. The expression also refers to the result of this process: the inscription and expansion of the work within each individual memory. The active participation of each reader is required throughout the hermeneutical process, from the open mindset needed to absorb a new reading until the point when it becomes registered in one’s “interior library”. Appropriation can be regarded as the final step of the reading process and the vanishing point of any analysis on the way literature is perceived and received. Personal appropriation of literary works by students is at the backdrop of any curriculum for teaching French and all research in didactics of literature. Maybe it should be granted more emphasis than it is in the French school system today, particularly in year 11 / 10th grade. This is my thesis statement, in the light of modern research on the reader as a subject. I shall first consider the notion of appropriation from the point of view of modern hermeneutics and reception theories, in compliance with the French official educational standards, and define the discursive spaces where appropriation of literary works occurs. I shall then analyze the findings of an exploratory research carried out in a number of year 11 / 10th grade classes: students were submitted to five successive experiments which placed them in the position of subject readers, within the story of a specific and individual relationship to literature. The findings are interpreted in two main axes. First, leaving room for a personal encounter between students and literary works during lessons permits to successfully address a number of current issues on the transmission of literature. Then, I consider several hypotheses concerning the appropriation process in class, more particularly, the link between subjective impressions, more objective readings and the acquisition of the expected academic standards, but also the acquisition of an ethical posture and the inscription of the works in students’ memories. I shall finally examine the pedagogical changes implied by such an approach in the management of class participation, of timing; in the positioning of the teacher and the learning strategies developed by students

Bardata, Kornelius Supranoto. "A descriptive assessment of sacraments as language events in Louis- Marie Chauvet and David Noel Power". Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/22755.

Texto completo
Resumen
This paper is entitled: A Descriptive Assessment of Sacraments as Language Events in Louis-Marie Chauvet and David Noel Power. What motivates the author to proceed with this topic is that the author feels the need of finding a new and creative approach to the sacraments. The author is determined to discuss this topic using the methodology of library reading. The two theologians whose theologies are being presented in this paper, namely, Louis-Marie Chauvet and David Noel Power, are the main sources. In addition to reading the works of Chauvet and Power, the author also gets into discussions with the supervisor. Since Chauvet and Power live in postmodern world, their theology can be of the good readings for students of theology who are interested in the theology of the sacraments in the midst of this ever-changing world. Chauvet, for example, proposes a new looking into the sacraments as language of the Trinitarian communication with his people. The church is the place where this interaction happens. The interaction itself occurs through the listening of the Scripture, sacraments and ethical commitment. In the same rhythm, David Noel Power suggests a theology where the sacraments are read as the language of God’s giving. They are the language of God’s giving because the church is the bodily present of the Trinity in the church. This present is, in turn, celebrated and relived through the Scripture, the sacraments, liturgy, rite, customs and cultures. Through all these elements, the language of God’s giving in the past is brought to life in the present time through the language of the church. Chauvet and Power recommend a fundamental theology through which the sacraments are no longer viewed as alienated from the daily experience of the church. The paper is written primarily as the author’s personal journey into the reflection on the sacraments. The author, therefore, hopes to achieve nothing more important than the growing of a personal love of the sacraments. In the second place, the author expects to have been able to introduce the fundamental sacraments of Louis-Marie Chauvet and David Noel Power to a larger context.

Resumen
The chapter deals with the biblical book of the Twelve Prophets. It presents the individual books and their order in the Hebrew and Greek traditions. It discusses unifying elements (superscriptions, dates, the theology of the word of YHWH) and themes (day of YHWH, Israel and the nations, the use of the grace formula of Exodus 34:6–7 within the book). It raises the hermeneutical question of how the book can be read as a unity, distinguishing between intentional allusions within the individual books and the effect of mere juxtaposition of the books. This is followed by a discussion of various theories about the formation of the book. Probable precursors to the Twelve are presented, as well as theories about redactional layers. The chapter ends with the proposal to read the book as a unity in variety.

Resumen
This chapter focusses on and explores the connection between the two core themes at the heart of the book’s research agenda: spirituality and music. Building on broad and intellectually informed definitions of musicking and spirituality, the chapter names three theological categories from the world of Christian theology – Grace, Trinity, and the Ascended Body of Christ – that help ground some commonly-perceived connections between the two, as well as various disciplinary fields from world of music study – musical semiotics, hermeneutics, and history – necessary to explore these connections further. From these preliminary considerations, the chapter makes a case for grounding research into music and spirituality on the source and subject of that work: the very person of the researcher. A reflexive and self-appropriated researcher is the foundation of all useful knowledge and the condition of possibility for its clarity and future development. Drawing on the categories of narrative, biography (Metz), the researcher “in conversion” (Lonergan), and a small test-group of reflective responses from scholars at work in this field, I suggest that more awareness of whence our interest in this field will help bridge gaps and advance our quest to understand music, spirituality and the spaces in-between.

Resumen
This chapter shows the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformers’ formative role in the evolution of the interpreting self whose desire to understand is inseparable from her acts of interpretation. Building to some extent on the work of Renaissance humanists, Luther, Calvin and company’s doctrines of sola scriptura, justification by grace through faith alone, and the priesthood of all believers reconfigured individuals’ relation to how they can attain knowledge of first importance – knowledge of God and oneself – and seeded a ‘hermeneutic revolution’. To Gadamer, this Protestant approach ‘really risks itself’ by situating interpreters as sitting under, rather than standing over, the other they seek to understand and by presuming a living relationship between interpreter and text. Act 4, Scene 1 of Much Ado About Nothing exemplifies Shakespeare’s absorption of this entwining of subjectivity and hermeneutics. This chapter engages with Gregory’s and Simpson’s (different) historiographies that each censure the Reformers’ hermeneutics, especially for its impacts on modernity, before elaborating on how the Reformers’ recovery of Augustine’s emphases on humanity’s fallen condition and the gratuitousness of divine salvation contests these recent narratives.

Resumen
Is Hamlet responsible for the misjudgements and unknowing that drive Hamlet to its tragic end? Or is he, like the heroes of the ancient Greek tragedies, powerless in the face of determining forces? Chapter Two examines how influential theological doctrines of Shakespeare’s day – the Fall and divine grace – bear upon the much-discussed question of Hamlet’s subjectivity, especially his agency. This chapter argues that the dialectic of freedom and necessity inherent in the Protestant Reformers’ conceptions of human fallenness, including the controversial notion of original sin, shapes Hamlet into a distinctly early modern dramatization of the ‘tragedy of hermeneutical experience’, as Bruns (expanding on Gadamer) terms it. So too do parodies, refusals and misreadings of divine grace – hints of transcendent light that could, but do not, illuminate the play-world’s hermeneutic darkness. As the protagonist in Shakespeare’s theologically inflected tragedy of hermeneutical experience, Hamlet embodies a complex subjectivity. Shakespeare’s interpreting self challenges readings of him which invoke Protestant ideas to absolutize either his agency or his fatality.

Resumen
In William Byrd’s 1589 Songs of Sundrie Natures, six songs explore the tyranny of Cupid, revealing previously unnoticed emblematic and political significance. This collection exemplifies the interconnected, cross-media conversations among composers, poets, emblemists, and patrons in the era. Emblems, combining images and allegoric readings, pervaded many aspects of society and represent a powerful hermeneutic tool hiding in plain sight. Byrd’s fall from grace in the 1580s, linked to his association with a Catholic plot against Queen Elizabeth, spurred his strategic use of a powerful Cupid as a political statement. Emblematic Cupid imagery, prevalent in Elizabethan iconography, served to reinforce the queen’s chastity, depicting her triumph over the winged god as a formidable achievement. The songbook, published during Byrd’s tumultuous period, becomes a valuable window into the composer’s personal politics, revealing the complex interplay of music, emblems, politics, and art in Elizabethan England.

Resumen
This brief, final chapter, summarizes the main points made in the previous chapters to demonstrate the relevance of Bonhoeffer’s theology for our time. In creatively appropriating biblical and patristic anthropology for our modern age, Bonhoeffer contributes important insights to Christian reflection on current debates about human nature, politics, and secularity. In drawing his insights from the Christ-centered, incarnational theology of the greater tradition, Bonhoeffer’s work also possesses a deeply ecumenical appeal much needed for our time. His Christian personalism, together with his careful correlation of the nature-grace relation appeals to Eastern Orthodox theologians and strongly resembles the integral humanism of Catholicism in thinkers like Henri de Lubac and Jacques Maritain. Given our present postmodern, secular culture, Bonhoeffer’s hermeneutic theology, his humanist ethics, and integral humanism offer exactly the biblically based, philosophically informed and ecumenically appealing model of engaging life, i.e., the kind of Christian humanism, Christians ought to consider in responding to current cultural issues.

Resumen
It is common to ascertain the loss of quality in the urban form during the 20th and 21st centuries, especially in the current globalization scenario, and in comparison to the previous centuries. Relevant authors of the cultural and artistic critique such as Erwin Panofsky, Ernst Gombrich or Enrique Lafuente Ferrari have defended the identification of the quality in the works of creation as the fundamental objective of the critique. Due to this, the research and identification of the quality features in the urban form are pertinent in order to have useful instruments to correct this contemporary cultural loss. It is therefore proposed the identification of quality principles of urban form from a hermeneutic point of view. That is to say, each of these principles as capable of opening a certain horizon of comprehension of a specific perspective of quality. For example, we can aim at: beauty, scale, amenity, grace, order, etc. Each principle, offers then a horizon of understanding and also of urban creativity that assembles into this work from the analysis of operative subprinciples and their verification on specific expressive cases of urban form, in both, historical and current aspects. The principles in turn can intertwine offering cumulative and transverse quality options. Therefore, what is sought, is to offer a pertinent and structured hermeneutical tool for the analysis of urban form in its values of quality and excellence.
