Energy is the capacity to do work and heat is the spontaneous flow of energy from one body or system to another through the random movement of atoms or molecules. The entropy of a system determines how much of its internal energy is unavailable for work under isothermal conditions, and the Gibbs energy is the energy available for work under isothermal conditions and constant pressure. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that for any reaction to proceed spontaneously the total entropy (system plus surroundings) must increase, which is why metabolic processes release heat. All organisms are thermodynamically open systems, exchanging both energy and matter with their surroundings. They can decrease their entropy in growth and development by ensuring a greater increase in the entropy of the environment. For an ideal gas in thermal equilibrium the distribution of energy across the component atoms or molecules is described by the Maxwell-Boltzmann equation. This distribution is fixed by the temperature of the system.

In this chapter gas flow through pipes is analysed, taking account of compressibility and either friction or heat exchange with the fluid. It is shown that in all cases the key parameter is the Mach number. The analyses are based upon the conservation laws for mass, momentum, and energy, together with an equation of state. So that significant results can be achieved, the flowing fluid is treated as a perfect gas, and the flow as one dimensional. Adiabatic pipe flow with wall friction is termed Fanno flow. Frictionless pipe flow with heat transfer is termed Rayleigh flow. It is found that both flows, and also isothermal pipe flow with wall friction, can be limited by choking.

The Doctoral Thesis examines the control of the swirling flame flow dynamics with an external static electric field by firing the gaseous products of thermal decomposition of pelletized straw, woody biomass, and peat with the aim of more efficient heat production with a decrease of flue gas emissions. The intensification of the downward vortex in the electric field has been determined, ensuring improved mixing of the air vortex with the biomass thermal decomposition gas flow, intensifying the convective mass transfer towards the heating surfaces, and increasing the amount of heat energy produced in the biomass thermochemical conversion process.

This chapter brings together, and builds on, the results from previous chapters to provide a succinct, and comprehensive, summary of all key relationships relating to ideal gases, including the heat and work associated with isothermal, adiabatic, isochoric and isobaric changes, and the properties of an ideal gas’s heat capacities at constant volume and constant pressure. The chapter also has two ‘case studies’ which use the ideal gas equations in broader, and more real, contexts, so showing how the equations can be used to tackle, successfully, more extensive systems. The first ‘case study’ is the Carnot cycle, and so covers all the fundamentals required for the proof of the existence of entropy as a state function; the second ‘case study’ is the ‘thermodynamic pendulum’ – a system in which a piston in an enclosed cylinder oscillates to and fro like a pendulum under gravity, in both the absence, and presence, of friction.

Heat waves will occur in Rotterdam with greater frequency in the future. Those affected most will be the elderly – a group that is growing in size. In the light of the Paris heat wave of August 2003 and the one in Rotterdam in July 2006, mortality rates among the elderly in particular are likely to rise in the summer. METHOD The aim of the Hotterdam research project was to gain a better understanding of urban heat. The heat was measured and the surface energy balance modelled from that perspective. Social and physical features of the city we identified in detail with the help of satellite images, GIS and 3D models. We determined the links between urban heat/surface energy balance and the social/physical features of Rotterdam by multivariable regression analysis. The crucial elements of the heat problem were then clustered and illustrated on a social and a physical heat map. RESULTS The research project produced two heat maps, an atlas of underlying data and a set of adaptation measures which, when combined, will make the city of Rotterdam and its inhabitants more aware and less vulnerable to heat wave-related health effects. CONCLUSION In different ways, the pre-war districts of the city (North, South, and West) are warmer and more vulnerable to urban heat than are other areas of Rotterdam. The temperature readings that we carried out confirm these findings as far as outdoor temperatures are concerned. Indoor temperatures vary widely. Homes seem to have their particular dynamics, in which the house’s age plays a role. The above-average mortality of those aged 75 and over during the July 2006 heat wave in Rotterdam can be explained by a) the concentration of people in this age group, b) the age of the homes they live in, and c) the sum of sensible heat and ground heat flux. A diverse mix of impervious surfaces, surface water, foliage, building envelopes and shade make one area or district warmer than another. Adaptation measures are in the hands of residents, homeowners and the local council alike, and relate to changing behaviour, physical measures for homes, and urban design respectively.

Abstract Hydrogen, the first and most abundant element in our universe, is an essential zero-carbon fuel in humanity’s race against catastrophic climate change. However, very few have access to cryogenic systems for energy-dense hydrogen to gain the necessary experience to contribute to this race. This textbook is written as an invitation for scientists and engineers with experience in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer to engage in this race for the future via cryogenic hydrogen research and development. We begin with the history of hydrogen and cryogenics, to create a context for current needs. In Chapter 2, we build a foundation for hydrogen’s unique quantum-mechanical effects on bulk thermophysical properties, and how to choose from and utilize available property models. Practical methods are presented in Chapter 3 for sensing and converting between the quantum-mechanical forms. Chapter 4 presents foundational aspects of hydrogen liquefaction and cooling in recuperative and regenerative cycles. Elements of hydrogen-transfer phenomena including heat-exchanger optimization and recently developed two-phase flow correlations and thermoacoustic instabilities are discussed in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 is an extensive analysis of liquid hydrogen storage-system options. The final chapter overviews the Cool Fuel School, a hands-on cryogenic hydrogen training course that helps readers develop a new system design and associated cryogenic hydrogen safety plan. Compressible-gas flow through convergent and convergent-divergent nozzles is analysed in this chapter based upon the conservation laws for mass, momentum, and energy, together with considerations of thermodynamics. It is shown that in both cases the key parameter in describing the flow is the Mach number, which is used to distinguish between subsonic and supersonic flow. So that significant results can be achieved, the flowing fluid is treated as a perfect gas, and the flow as one dimensional. Flow through a convergent nozzle and the choking limitation is discussed. Flow through a normal shockwave, which is an important feature of supersonic flow, is also analysed. No account is taken of surface friction or heat transfer, and the flow upstream and downstream of a shockwave is treated as isentropic. In addition, the conditions are discussed under which a shockwave arises in compressible flow through a convergent-divergent nozzle.

Mitigation—preventative actions to reduce the human forcing of climate change with the goal of keeping climate change within a range to which humans can adapt—must be prompt, rigorous, and focused on eliminating emissions of carbon dioxide, beginning with rapid cessation of the use of coal. Carbon dioxide is by far the most threatening greenhouse gas because it remains in the atmosphere for millennia longer than any other major greenhouse gas, and the heat retained on the planet by atmospheric carbon dioxide will continue to emerge from its transitional storage in the deep oceans for millennia after the atmospheric carbon finally dissipates. Sustainable development can be increased and ocean acidification can be stopped only if the dominant fossil fuel regime is promptly replaced by an affordable and accessible alternative energy regime. Poorer countries cannot be reasonably expected to cooperate with vigorous mitigation unless they are assisted with necessary adaptation.

This chapter covers the basic science of physics relevant to anaesthetic practice. Equipment and measurement devices are covered elsewhere. Starting with fundamentals, atomic structure is introduced, followed by dimensions and units as used in science. Basic mechanics are then discussed, focusing on mass and density, force, pressure, energy, and power. The concept of linearity, hysteresis, and frequency response in physical systems is then introduced, using relevant examples, which are easy to understand. Laminar and turbulent fluid flow is then described, using flow measurement devices as applications of this theory. The concept of pressure and its measurement is then discussed in some detail, including partial pressure. Starting with the kinetic theory of gases, heat and temperature are described, along with the gas laws, critical temperature, sublimation, latent heat, vapour pressure and vaporization illustrated by the function of anaesthetic vaporizers, humidity, solubility, diffusion, osmosis, and osmotic pressure. Ultrasound and its medical applications are discussed in some detail, including Doppler and its use to measure flow. This is followed by an introduction to lasers and their medical uses. The final subject covered is electricity, starting with concepts of charge and current, voltage, energy, and power, and the role of magnetism. This is followed by a discussion of electrical circuits and the rules governing them, and bridge circuits used in measurement. The function of capacitors and inductors is then introduced, and alternating current and transformers are described.

Weiter gehen Experimente in sozialen Medien, in denen die Tools der Plattformen neue Schreibweisen hervorbringen. Und wieder Bedeutung gewonnen hat jene Tradition, die man genuin digitale Literatur nennen kann und die nicht nur nebenbei und instrumentell digitale Technik verwendet, sondern ihre Werke ganz wesentlich durch Computer, Algorithmen oder neuronale Netze produziert. Der Sonderband schreibt die erste Bestandsaufnahme digitaler Literatur in TEXT+KRITIK aus dem Jahr 2001 fort und hebt die Differenzen und Kontinuitäten hervor, die sich in diesem Feld seitdem ergeben haben. Als Diskussion des State of the Art in technischer wie literarischer Hinsicht ist er eine Momentaufnahme einer im Umbruch befindlichen Literatur.

Nach den Olympischen Winterspielen 2014 wurde auf Initiative des Fachbereichs Ausdauer am Institut für Angewandte Trainingswissenschaft (IAT) eine intensive Diskussion mit Trainern und Leistungssportverantwortlichen der Ausdauersportarten zu nationalen und internationalen Entwicklungstendenzen sowie möglichen Ursachen für Leistungseinbußen deutscher Athletinnen und Athleten in Gang gesetzt. Untermauert durch die Weltstandsanalysen des IAT in Auswertung von Rio 2016, konnten inhaltliche Schwerpunkte in den Bereichen Trainings- und Wettkampfsysteme, Leistungsdiagnostik und optimale Gestaltung der Umfeldbedingungen gesetzt werden. Im einleitenden, übergreifenden Artikel werden theoretische Standpunkte, die Positionen des IAT und aktuelle sportpraktische Lösungen zu ausgewählten Problemen vorgestellt. Zudem wurde die Anregung des ehemaligen Direktors des IAT, Prof. Arndt Pfützner, anlässlich des 2015 veranstalteten Symposiums "Angewandte Trainingswissenschaft im Forschungs- und Serviceverbund Leistungssport" zur tiefgründigen Analyse einer Vielzahl von trainings-, wettkampf- und leistungsdiagnostischen Daten aufgegriffen. Die daraus gewonnenen neuen Erkenntnisse finden sich in sportartspezifischen Beiträgen in diesem Heft. Sowohl die inhaltliche Diskussion als auch die praktische Umsetzung sind ein laufender Prozess, der u. a. durch die Bereitstellung vorhandenen Wissens zu den aufgeworfenen Fragen in einer vom IAT eingerichteten und ständig aktualisierten Literaturdatenbank unterstützt wird.

We leven in een tijdperk van meningen. Op sociale media, in talkshows op tv en in talloze vlogs en blogs buitelen de meningen over elkaar heen. Iedereen lijkt overal iets van te vinden, en ook te móeten vinden. We staan met ons allen bloot aan een stortvloed van besmettelijke opinitis, die we overigens ook met ons allen veroorzaken. Veel meningen zijn aangepraat en er wordt veel nagepraat, beïnvloed door de bubbel waartoe men behoort of door publieke figuren en influencers die hun mening zó overtuigend presenteren dat grote groepen hun mening voor waar aannemen. De filosofie maakt al sinds de oudheid onderscheid tussen ‘meningen’, die schijnkennis vertegenwoordigen, en ‘waarheid’ op basis van kennis die voortkomt uit denken. Zelfstandig oordelen betekent in de eerste plaats onafhankelijk oordelen; onafhankelijk van meningen, drogbeelden en sentimenten. De bijdragen in deze bundel verkennen hoe onafhankelijk oordelen tot stand komt. Hoe kunnen we zélf oordelen over waarheid en geloofwaardigheid? Welke rol spelen anderen daarbij? Nabije anderen, maar ook bubbel-overstijgende inspirerende denkers, historische of fictionele figuren, die uitnodigen tot nieuwe interpretaties en ideeën. En hoe krijgt een oordeel gezag? Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 discusses thermal modeling of greenhouse solar dryers and presents a case study on a hybrid active greenhouse solar dryer. Chapter 13 covers the thermal analysis of photovoltaic thermal (PVT) air heaters employing thermoelectric modules (TEM). The applications of various solar systems in building sectors and the development in this field are covered in Chapter 14. Chapter 15 deals with energy and environ- economics analysis of bio-gas integrated semi-transparent photo-voltaic thermal (Bi-iSPVT) systems for Indian climates. The book has a broad scope and is intended as a resource for students, researchers and teachers in universities, industries, and national and commercial laboratories to help learn the fundamentals and in-depth knowledge of thermal modeling and recent developments in solar heating systems.
