Asmus, B. "Medieval copper smelting in the Harz Mountains, Germany". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2011. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1306174/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Rammelsberg deposit in the Harz mountains in Germany is among the largest metal deposits in the world and has been in continuous use for more than a millennium. There is much controversy as to the nature of the metals produced and the processes involved from the ores of this deposit. This thesis deals with the largest and most accurately excavated smelting site of the high medieval period in the Harz mountains called Huneberg and may be regarded as typical for region and period. Traditionally historians connect the Rammelsberg with silver production, the mining historians, however point out that the deposit is too poor in silver and that copper was produced in the high medieval period. Modern economical literature classifies the Rammelsberg as a lead-zinc deposit. To contribute towards the understanding of these questions an archaeometric study of archaeometallurgic waste- and byproducts, such as slag, furnace lining, furnace wall, litharge and spilled metal drops was undertaken. It builds the base of the interpretation of the metallurgical activities that have taken place at the Huneberg and is contrasted with previous studies. It is suggested that copper, lead and silver in form of argentiferous lead were produced on site, using a complex multi-step process, taking full advantage of the numerous structural features of the site, e.g. the three furnaces present on the site. Successive smelting episodes produced black copper of increasing purity as well as a rather rich argentiferous lead. Because the site is similar to may other sites it is further suggested the mode of metal production at the Huneberg followed a more or less stringent set of recipes and traditions. The mass of 1600 kg slag recovered from the site suggest a copper production of some 600 kg or less, depending on the ore quality. Lead is thought to have been produced in similar quantities, which in turn would mean that the site produced also 1.4 kg of silver during its operation.

Resumen
The article points to the following causes of German social policy reform, as it has taken shape by the so-called ‘Hartz’-Acts: the self-inflicted financial crisis of the welfare state, the return of party leaders as agenda setters, and the weakening of employers associations and trade unions in this policy field. Through a large, informal coalition, the political parties have responded to various internal conflict constellations.

Resumen
Thesis advisor: Andrew Beauchamp
This paper examines the effect of changes in the duration of unemployment insurance on various measures of post-unemployment job quality within the context of Germany after the Hartz reforms. I find a significant positive effect of UI duration on re-employment wage, as well as significant effects for certain demographic groups indicating increased occupational prestige, job satisfaction, and satisfaction with hours of work. I find no significant effect on distance from home to work. I find that the positive relationship between UI eligibility and unemployment duration is based solely on the unemployment durations of those who exit the labor force after unemployment; I find no evidence of a link between UI eligibility and unemployment duration for those who found jobs at the end of their unemployment spells. To understand these results, I propose several possible explanations: heterogenous job search behaviors among those with different UI durations, a psychological burden of impending UI exhaustion, a negotiation advantage of a higher reservation wage for those with longer eligibility, or the possibility that my data simply failed to observe a positive relationship between UI duration and unemployment duration. Finally, I present one possible policy response to these findings, aimed at reducing the problem of free riding

Resumen
Many European countries have experienced a significant increase of unemployment in recent years. This paper reviews several theoretical models that try to explain this phenomenon.
Predominantly, these models claim a link between the poor performance of European labor markets and the high level of market regulation. Commonly referred to as the Eurosclerosis debate, prominent approaches consider insider-outsider relationships, search-models, and the influence of hiring and firing costs on equilibrium employment.
The paper presents empirical evidence of each model and studies the relevance of the identified rigidities as a determinant of high unemployment in Europe.
Furthermore, a case study analyzes the unemployment problem in Germany and critically discusses new reform efforts. In particular this section analyzes whether the recently enacted Hartz reforms can induce higher employment.

The goal of this thesis is to analyze labor demand and labor supply factors in Germany since reunification. It is based on three different labor market frameworks: a competitive labor market model (Marshall (1920)), a rigid labor market model (Pigou (1933)), and a search-and-matching model (Pissarides (2000)). Differing hypothesis about the co-variation of labor market indicators are derived theoretically, and are evaluated empirically. Three research questions are addressed in this thesis: What is the nature of the large expansion of employment in Germany after 2005? Were supply or demand factors more important for the increase in employment and wage dispersion after 2003? Which of the two competing hypotheses is more plausible? a) A negative shock to wage rigidity due to declining union power and/or more employment-conscious wage bargaining, or b) a positive labor supply shock due to changes in labor market policies. The main findings corresponding to the three stated research questions are: The expansion of employment in Germany since 2005 has primarily been at the extensive margin due to the increase of part-time employment. The Dispersion of hourly wages, which is expanded in a synthetic panel to include part-time employment, began in 2003 and ended in 2011. The labor market outcomes in Germany in this period, namely the negative correlation of wages with employment and participation, correspond most closely to the competitive labor market model with dominant supply shocks. These positive labor supply shocks are interpreted to be induced by major labor market reforms.

Resumen
This thesis examines the contemporary German labour market regime, answering one theoretical and one empirical research question. The theoretical question is: How can we analyse labour market institutions with a theory of social justice that is sufficiently parsimonious to conduct concrete empirical research? The empirical research question is: Are the labour market institutions of the German Hartz Regime socially just? The thesis proceeds in two parts. After defining the Hartz Regime, it reviews theories of justice applied to comparative political economy – particularly the social investment paradigm’s appropriation of the capability approach. With the epistemological fallacy of reification evident in the latter, the thesis constructs a critical epistemic framework based on Habermas’s system and lifeworld distinction, with their respective instrumental and normative forms of reasoning, to theorise social justice as 1) parity of participation between a plurality of normative action orientations towards labour market participation, and 2) equivalent moral standards despite functional differentiation in the system. Utilising vignette-driven interviews with Jobcenters personnel, unemployed individuals, firms, and union representatives in four regions of Germany, findings suggest that the Hartz regime does not grant parity of participation. However, the asymmetric application of moral reasoning towards different positions in the social structure is more prevalent – with capital and rentier classes enjoying increasing rights to treat the wage labour relation instrumentally rather than as the moral duty expected of labour and state dependants. The thesis then reconstructs a theory of social justice for future use in comparative political economy.

Resumen
German companies or German-based subsidiaries of international businesses may become subject of, or otherwise involved in, investigations by German or foreign regulatory or law enforcement authorities. In the context of such investigations, it is not unusual for the concerned company to face informal requests from German or foreign regulatory and law enforcement authorities for voluntary cooperation. Oftentimes, such requests focus on the transfer of electronic data for investigatory purposes, and such data typically relate, in whole or in part, to individuals (e.g. employees, suppliers and customers). In these and other cases, compliance of German companies or German-based subsidiaries with informal requests from regulatory and law enforcement authorities may itself entail a compliance risk or even constitute a breach by the corporate entity of the German data protection laws resulting in criminal prosecution, administrative sanctions, or damage claims and other actions by third party individuals. This article outlines the scope of application of the German Federal Data Protection Act, introduces the applicable statutory provisions, and discusses the relevant considerations in the context of an informal request by a regulatory or law enforcement authority for voluntary cooperation in the context of global investigations, in particular where a German-based entity faces requests from authorities abroad.

Duncan, Tristan K. "Towards an affective harm reduction: an ethnographic account of care, pleasure, and atmosphere within a German drug consumption room". Thesis, Griffith University, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/395554.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis presents an analysis of the embodied, messy, and situated taking place of a drug consumption room in Frankfurt, Germany. My analysis is grounded in an immersive ethnographic engagement with the everyday operations of this consumption room and a sense that much of the complex detail of ‘what happens’ within these sites remains under-theorised and under-explored. I argue that a prevailing interest in quantifying the efficacy of consumption room interventions has left considerable gaps in our understanding of how these sites work and how they are embodied, negotiated, and constituted in everyday experience. In response, this thesis attempts to fundamentally re-think ‘what is it that’s going on’ within drug consumption rooms, drawing on recent strands of posthuman thinking. These interests are cultivated and explored through a novel ethnographic account comprising 12 months of participation within a German drug consumption room known as La Strada, along with in-depth interviews with service staff and clients and photographic and auto-photographic methods. I present the findings of my ethnographic material in three parts, focusing on three distinctive features of service delivery at La Strada. The first chapter explores relations of pleasure, the second of care, and the third considers how the site’s distinctive atmospheric properties mediate experiences of consumption and social support. Together these chapters illuminate the social, affective, and material conditions through which the experience and effects of the consumption room are realised. By foregrounding the intensely affective, contingent, and relational character of consumption room engagement, my findings offer a more nuanced understanding of how these sites variably cut off or sustain care in circumstances of extreme disadvantage. Yet they also pose a unique set of ethico-political considerations regarding stigma, disadvantage, and social inclusion with profound implications for how we currently enact, study, and value these sites. The thesis closes by reflecting on these ethico-political implications, arguing for a more affective mode of harm reduction alert to the embodied experience of consumption room service delivery and the ways these services might be made otherwise to more directly address experiences of stigma and social disadvantage.

Brady, Anne. "From no work to work? : the role of job placement and skills training services in assisting unemployment Benefit II recipients find work under Germany's Hartz IV welfare reforms". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2014. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3077/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis presents the results of a qualitative investigation of Unemployment Benefit II (UBII) recipients' experiences of skill training and job placement services under Germany's Hartz IV welfare reforms—arguably a (neo-) liberal intervention in the context of what has traditionally been described as a conservative-corporatist welfare regime. This thesis explores the experience of skills training and job placement services in terms of the degree to which these support mechanisms engage with UBII recipients’ needs and perceptions and how these necessarily reflect the purposes of the support and activation mechanisms (to provide support to and assist the long-term unemployed find work) and the underlying policy assumptions (that the long-term unemployed need to be made to demonstrate responsibility in finding work). The evidence presented suggests such services have not necessarily provided a route into regular employment. Instead the ‘support’ mechanisms tend to ‘busy’ the recipients; to be irrelevant to the recipients’ employment history and/or future interests; and not to match what recipients wish to, or are interested in, doing. Secondly, the policy rhetoric and design of the Hartz IV reforms implied, ostensibly, a shift with some cultural significance—from social solidarity to individual responsibility; from old (conservative) to new (neo-liberal) paternalism. The thesis examines UBII recipients’ perception of their ‘right’ to and ‘responsibility’ in finding work. The evidence suggests that popular discourse and understandings of the right to and responsibility in finding work in Germany are not so distinct or dissimilar from the Anglophone world. Finally, this thesis identifies a potential contradiction within the German government’s political objective of providing support (Fördern) to recipients in return for UBII recipients demonstrating responsibility (Fordern) in finding work. The findings suggest there is little need to make unemployed Germans feel ‘responsible’ for finding work. The demands placed on recipients to demonstrate to case managers that they are taking responsibility for finding work may undermine the recipient’s ability responsibly to look for work. And UBII recipients may ‘trick’ the system to meet these demands, ostensibly wasting the time and resources of Jobcenter staff and UBII recipients. This thesis concludes by arguing that Fördern and Fordern are ultimately not compatible within a policy framework. Where Fordern (demand/require) exists in conjunction with the threat of sanctions for non-compliance, there is too much of a chance that Fördern (support), in the form of job placement and skill training services, will be used to regulate the conduct of and discipline UBII recipients rather than provide legitimate support. Thus, any support provided starts to break down as soon as Fordern is inserted into the policy framework.

Resumen
Fear is a challenge for European democracies today that is discussed in the same breath as rising populism and anti-immigrant speech. However, it seems that fear has also become a defining principle for Western (post)modern society in many other areas of life. This observation has been framed by the term culture of fear and described by recognized sociologists like Ulrich Beck, Zygmunt Bauman and Frank Furedi. They argue that changing social conditions like individualisation and globalisation have altered Western society’s preoccupation with security, uncertainty and risk. In consequence, Bauman and Furedi talk about a fear that has become “free-floating” and “liquid”. This research project asks about the implications of such a culture of fear for society and takes a closer look at what has been described as politics of fear. By conducting a critical political discourse analysis of the political talk show hart aber fair, this paper aims at tracing politics of fear in the German discourse over migration during the “refugee crisis” (2015-2017). In a three-tiered approach, the investigation embarks by defining culture of fear and its social premises, followed by a discussion of politics of fear theories drawing upon such concepts as precaution, prevention and securitisation. Emerging from this discussion, both a “traditional” politics with fear and a (post)modern politics of uncertainty are identified. The subsequent analysis of a selected hart aber fair episode from the 5th September 2016 bases on Siegfried Jäger’s approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and examines the argumentation and interaction of the guests in the debate. The findings indicate that in addition to the use of fear as a political means for populist politicians, the narrative of the “fearful society” has on a whole permeated the German political discourse over migration. Hence, culture of fear offers a new perspective for the understanding of political discourse and the current developments in political practice.

PATALAKH, ARTEM. "SOFT POWER REVISITED: HOW ATTRACTION WORKS IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS". Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/579396.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis problematises the bases of soft power, that is, causal mechanisms connecting the agent (A) and the subject (B) of a power relationship. As the literature review reveals, their underspecification by neoliberal IR scholars, the leading proponents of the soft power concept, has caused a great deal of scholarly confusion over such questions as how to clearly differentiate between hard and soft power, how attraction (soft power’s primary mechanism) works and what roles structural and relational forces play in hard/soft power. In an effort to ascertain the bases, I address this issue not from the viewpoint of A’s policies or resources, like do IR neoliberal scholars, but in terms of B’s psychological perception of A. Employing social psychological accounts, I argue that attraction can be produced in three distinct ways, namely 1) through B’s identification with A (“emotional” attraction), 2) via B’s appreciation of A’s competence/knowledge in a particular field (“rational” attraction) and 3) by means of the activation of B’s internalised values which contextually prescribe B to act in A’s favour (“social” attraction). Importantly, depending upon the way attraction is produced, it is peculiar in a number of characteristics, the main of which are power scope, weight and durability. Insights from social psychology also show that unlike soft power, hard power requires not only B’s relevant perception of the A-B relationship (as coercive or rewarding), but also A’s capability to actualise a threat of punishment and/or a promise of reward. I argue this difference can be fairly treated as definitional rather than empirical, which implies that coercion and reward necessarily have both relational and structural dimensions, whereas for attraction, a structural one alone suffices, while a relational one may or may not be present. Having explicated the soft power bases, I illustrate each of them using three “most likely” case studies, namely Serbia’s policies towards Russia (emotional attraction), Kazakhstan’s approach to relations with the EU (rational attraction) and Germany’s policies vis-à-vis Israel (social attraction).

Syme, Neil. "Uncanny modalities in post-1970s Scottish fiction : realism, disruption, tradition". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/21768.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis addresses critical conceptions of Scottish literary development in the twentieth-century which inscribe realism as both the authenticating tradition and necessary telos of modern Scottish writing. To this end I identify and explore a Scottish ‘counter-tradition’ of modern uncanny fiction. Drawing critical attention to techniques of modal disruption in the works of a number of post-1970s Scottish writers gives cause to reconsider that realist teleology while positing a range of other continuities and tensions across modern Scottish literary history. The thesis initially defines the critical context for the project, considering how realism has come to be regarded as a medium of national literary representation. I go on to explore techniques of modal disruption and uncanny in texts by five Scottish writers, contesting ways in which habitual recourse to the realist tradition has obscured important aspects of their work. Chapter One investigates Ali Smith’s reimagining of ‘the uncanny guest’. While this trope has been employed by earlier Scottish writers, Smith redesigns it as part of a wider interrogation of the hyperreal twenty-first-century. Chapter Two considers two texts by James Robertson, each of which, I argue, invokes uncanny techniques familiar to readers of James Hogg and Robert Louis Stevenson in a way intended specifically to suggest concepts of national continuity and literary inheritance. Chapter Three argues that James Kelman’s political stance necessitates modal disruption as a means of relating intimate individual experience. Re-envisaging Kelman as a writer of the uncanny makes his central assimilation into the teleology of Scottish realism untenable, complicating the way his work has been positioned in the Scottish canon. Chapter Four analyses A.L. Kennedy’s So I Am Glad, delineating a similarity in the processes of repetition which result in both uncanny effects and the phenomenon of tradition, leading to Kennedy’s identification of an uncanny dimension in the concept of national tradition itself. Chapter Five considers the work of Alan Warner, in which the uncanny appears as an unsettling sense of significance embedded within the banal everyday, reflecting an existentialism which reaches beyond the national. In this way, I argue that habitual recourse to an inscribed realist tradition tends to obscure the range, complexity and instability of the realist techniques employed by the writers at issue, demonstrating how national continuities can be productively accommodated within wider, pluralistic analytical approaches.

Texto completo

Hard Core Urbanism is the tendency to produce corporate enclaves within the fluid city. The garrison mentality denies the complex and interwoven processes exemplified by the history of Potsdamer Platz. Breaking the completeness of the corporate plan, the project initiates the process of diversification; enabling a reoccupation by the city.

To find out the answers the method of comparison with the legal regulation de lege ferenda and German legal system has been used. The thesis is composed of three parts. The first part describes the Czech civil liability of bodily harm and the second part describes the German legal system. The last part deals with the comparison of the legal institutes in the both legal systems. The fundamental differences could be evaluated according whether they are in favour to the harmer or the sufferer. The delict liability in the German civil law seems to be positive for the sufferer - patient in the process, because all participating persons involved at wrongful act causing bodily harm are held liable which expands the scope of liable people.
This thesis analyzes the 2001-2006 labor market reforms in Germany. The aim of this work is twofold. First, an overview of the most important reform measures and the intended effects is given. Second, two specific and very fundamental amendments, namely the merging of unemployment assistance and social benefits, as well as changes in the duration of unemployment insurance benefits, are analyzed in detail to evaluate their effects on individuals and the entire economy. Using a matching model with optimal search intensity and Semi-Markov methods, the effects of these two amendments on the duration of unemployment, optimal search intensity and unemployment are analyzed

Sauer, Christof 1963. "Reaching the unreached Sudan Belt : Guinness, Kumm and the Sudan-Pioneer-Mission". Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/891.

Texto completo
Resumen
This missiological project seeks to study the role of the Guinnesses and Kumms in reaching the Sudan Belt, particularly through the Sudan-Pionier-Mission (SPM) founded in 1900. The term Sudan Belt referred to Africa between Senegal and Ethiopia, at that period one of the largest areas unreached by Christian missionaries. Grattan Guinness (1835-1910) at that time was the most influential promoter of faith missions for the Sudan. The only initiative based in Germany was the SPM, founded by Guinness, his daughter Lucy (1865-1906), and her German husband Karl Kumm (1874-1930). Kumm has undeservedly been forgotten, and his early biography as a missionary and explorer in the deserts of Egypt is here brought to light again. The early SPM had to struggle against opposition in Germany. Faith missions were considered unnecessary, and missions to Muslims untimely by influential representatives of classical missions. The SPM was seeking to reach the Sudan Belt via the Nile from Aswan. The most promising figure for this venture was the Nubian Samuel Ali Hiseen (1863-1927), who accomplished a scripture colportage tour through Nubia. Unfortunately, he was disregarded by the first German missionary, Johannes Kupfemagel (1866-1937). When the SPM failed to reach the Sudan Belt due to political restrictions, Kumm and the SPM board were divided in their strategies. Kumm planned to pursue a new route via the Niger River, seeking support in Great Britain rather independently. The SPM, holding on to Aswan, dismissed Kumm, and began to decline until it made a new start in 1905, but for a long time remained a local mission work in Upper Egypt. The Sudan United Mission however, founded by the Kumms in 1904, did indeed reach the Sudan Belt. An analysis of the SPM reveals its strengths and weaknesses. The SPM grew out of the Holiness movement and shared the urgency, which made faith missions successful, but also was the SPM's weakness, as it suffered from ill-preparedness. The SPM innovatively gathered together single women from the nobility in a community of service for missions under its chairman, Pastor Theodor Ziemendorff (1837-:1912).

The author analyses graves of the Corded Ware in Central Germany, which are containing artefacts made of organic hard material. These artefacts were typologically classified and their technology are regarded as their chronological and spatial distribution. On the instance of two types the author tests the correlation between their positions in the graves, the grave-types and sex and age of the skeletons.
