In the 2nd century CE, Roman emperors took decisions on several cases involving slaves who had been brutally treated by their masters. Such masters had to accept that their slaves would be sold, and in some cases they themselves were even punished, e.g. by being temporarily exiled. In the early 3rd century Ulpian construed a new crime from this context, namely saevitia dominorum, to be punished extraordinarily. Diocletian undermined this in a rescript to a soldier, and Constantine openly allowed masters to punish their slaves just as they liked. Even if a punishment lead to the slave’s dead, he forbade investigation against the masters. Both the Visigothic Lex Romana and Justinian tried to come to compromises, which continued even into Frankish times, although the results were inconsistent. Only the Judeo-Christian Collatio preserved Ulpian’s concept of a new crime, but the secular lawyers took no notice of this text, whereas medieval clerical jurists did.

ABSTRACT A series of experiments involving herders and ISB (designated HISB) were conducted at sea on 14th – 15th June 2016, near the Frigg Field in the North Sea. The primary objective of the experiments described in this paper was to demonstrate, at near-full scale, the use of herders followed by in situ burning (ISB) in open water conditions and validate the findings of an earlier field study of herders in conjunction with ISB. Two experimental releases of 6 m3 (approximately 40 barrels) and one of 4 m3 of Grane Blend crude oil were undertaken. The released oil spread out differently on the sea surface in each of the slicks due to slight variations in release conditions and prevailing wind conditions. Herder (ThickSlick 6535) was applied around two of the slicks by spraying from a small boat; a third slick was not herded before ignition. In the first test, approximately 80% of the total amount of thick oil was herded to form a coherent slick with an average oil layer thickness of approximately 3 mm to 5 mm. The second herded slick accounted for 40% of the amount of oil released and resulted in an average layer thickness of approximately 2 mm to 3 mm present as several discrete areas of thick oil. The average oil layer thickness in the non-herded slick was 2.5 mm to 3 mm (under very calm weather conditions) and this slick had also been broken up into several discrete areas of thick oil. Ignition with gelled gasoline igniters was carried out approximately one hour after oil release. All three slicks were successfully ignited. Approximately 3.4 m3 of the available oil in the first herded slick was consumed in three distinct burns, while the second herded slick consumed 0.8 m3 of oil in only one burn. The remaining test involving an unherded slick consumed approximately 1.2 m3 of oil in three burns.

ON 3 October 2004, APN News and Media, owners of the New Zealand Herald launched a Sunday paper. The Herald on Sunday arrived as a major competitor for the Fairfax-owned Sunday Star-Times and Sunday News. The first issue featured a group photo of eager-looking new staff. Missing from their news coverage, however, was a timely story about media ownership and democracy. Ten days earlier, journalists at the weekday New Zealand Herald had announced plans for court action against their employers. APN had refused to extend the New Zealand Herald collective agreement to workers on the Sunday edition. This story began on July 30 with APN’s decision to launch the new paper.

Resumen
Este artículo analiza la relación entre el Audiovisual y los vascos del norte. A pesar de ser Iparralde un territorio que ha hecho aportes relevantes en la historia del Audiovisual vasco, hasta hoy no se han dado condiciones para desarrollar una filmografía normalizada. En estas lineas, estudiaremos primero la historia de los realizadores vasco-continentales “exiliados” del país, seguidamente analizaremos las obras realizadas por extranjeros en Iparralde y finalmente, esbozaremos una historia de la producción vasca. Tratándose de un tema apenas estudiado, este trabajo pretende ser una primera aproximación histórica, cartografía de una relación tan fructifera como asimétrica.

Two dailies in the same city, the Miami Herald and the News, with widely differing circulations and geographical distributions, were analyzed to determine differences in coverage of a local civil disturbance: rioting in the Overtown community following the fatal shooting of a black by a Miami police officer. The larger Miami Herald devoted proportionately less space to the incident and less front-page space than did the News. However, the Herald had a higher percentage of background information in its coverage. The Herald did improve its civil disturbance reportage in this 1982–83 incident compared with a previous event in 1980.

O presente trabalho transita entre duas ?reas do conhecimento: a Filosofia e o Direito. ? resultado de um estudo que visa ? aproxima??o da hermen?utica filos?fica de Hans- Georg Gadamer com a hermen?utica jur?dica, tendo como objetivo apresentar alguns dos principais conceitos tratados pelo autor e discutir a possibilidade de sua aplica??o ? interpreta??o na esfera do Direito. A abordagem te?rica envolveu, al?m da pr?pria perspectiva filos?fica central de Gadamer, a pesquisa de autores que fazem uma an?lise dos seus pressupostos. Buscou-se exemplificar, ainda, tal aplica??o, por meio de uma poss?vel leitura ampliada do conceito de c?rculo hermen?utico proposto pelo autor. Verificou-se, afinal, que determinados conceitos fundamentais da filosofia de Gadamer tais como o c?rculo hermen?utico, a tradi??o, a dist?ncia temporal, a consci?ncia da hist?ria dos efeitos e a aplica??o como forma de compreens?o s?o aplic?veis ? hermen?utica jur?dica, possibilitando uma reflex?o mais aprofundada e dial?tica dessa ?rea. Resumen
The thesis deals with the cooperation between the director and actor during individual phases of the staging process as they appear in everyday theatre life. The indiviual phases of the staging process are supplemented by the author's own experience with managing the actors, which she gained especially in the course of her studies at the Drama Faculty of AMU. The second part of the thesis investigates the issues of inner truthfulness and the possibilities of its achievement within the production of a play. As a part of collecting the material for the thesis, the author conducted a research, which included interviews with three professional directors - Hana Burešová, Ladislav Smoček and Štěpán Pácl, whose methods of work are described. In the final part of the thesis the author states that it is difficult to draw general conclusions about the cooperation between the director and actor because it is always of subjective nature. The issue of inner truthfulness is similarly difficult to generalise. Due to the multiplicity of options, however, neither of them loses attractiveness for further research.

This research is in charge of responding whether philosophical hermeneutics, which became autonomous within the framework of the thought of Hans-Georg Gadamer the claim of universality of the hermeneutical problem attribute, may be qualified as genuine philosophy. The underlying theme of the thesis covers the main features of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics in order to promote a kind of internal criticism about its corresponding assumptions, especially those that revolve around the universal primacy of the historicity of understanding. It advocates the need to counteract against the transcendental horizon of meaning, significantly accentuated by philosophical hermeneutics through the incidence of historical understanding that runs through each interpretation about the world, the transcendental horizon of normative validity, responsible for critical and reflective bypass any thought that title itself as legitimately philosophical. In these terms, hermeneutics as philosophy, to achieve the desired universality platform, must claim at the same time the substrate of normative rationality validation, so as not to incur into a kind of ontological hypertrophy, acting just like a redundant substitute hermeneutics of Heidegger's philosophy. Furthermore, philosophical hermeneutics should resist, with equal caution of self-criticism, in stimulating too much of this counterpart reflective validity in order to challenge the arrogant place able to propel the verdict of the final word or the last intransitively foundation considered as an ultimate point of view, behold the assumption of its universality stands on the critical path of the metaphysical finitude, that is, on the horizon of a program stripped of absolute or totalitarian overtones.
Trata a presente investiga??o de responder se a hermen?utica filos?fica, autonomizada nos marcos do pensamento de Hans-Georg Gadamer pela reivindica??o do atributo da universalidade do problema hermen?utico, pode ser qualificada genuinamente como filosofia. O fio condutor da tese percorre as principais caracter?sticas da hermen?utica filos?fica gadameriana com a finalidade de promover uma esp?cie de cr?tica interna a partir dos correspondentes pressupostos, especialmente os que giram em torno do primado universal da historicidade da compreens?o. Preconiza-se a necessidade de contrapor ao horizonte transcendental de sentido, significativamente acentuado pela hermen?utica filos?fica pela incid?ncia da compreens?o hist?rica que atravessa toda e qualquer interpreta??o acerca do mundo, o horizonte transcendental de validade normativa, respons?vel pela deriva??o cr?tica e reflexiva de qualquer pensamento que se intitule como legitimamente filos?fico. Nesses termos, a hermen?utica enquanto filosofia, para alcan?ar-se na pretendida plataforma de universalidade, precisa reivindicar concomitantemente o substrato da racionalidade normativa de valida??o, de maneira a n?o incorrer na hipertrofia do ontol?gico, como se fosse um substitutivo redundante da filosofia hermen?utica de Heidegger. Ademais, a hermen?utica filos?fica dever? resistir-se, com igual prud?ncia de autocr?tica, no est?mulo demasiado desta contrapartida de validade reflexiva, de maneira a contestar o lugar arrogante capaz de impulsionar o veredicto da palavra final ou da fundamenta??o ?ltima intransitivamente considerada como derradeiro crit?rio, eis que a assun??o de sua universalidade se sobressai no caminho cr?tico da metaf?sica da finitude, isto ?, no horizonte de um programa despido de conota??o absoluta ou totalit?ria.

Esta disserta??o tem o objetivo de recriar o conceito de compreens?o (Verstehen) na obra Verdade e M?todo de Hans-Georg Gadamer. Para ele, a compreens?o consiste num atributo da experi?ncia de mundo do ser humano. A tese ? desenvolvida a partir de dois pressupostos: (i) o conceito de Lebenswelt de Husserl, o qual ? condi??o de possibilidade de conhecimento: antes de ser sujeito cognoscente j? se ? objeto no mundo; (ii) a contribui??o de Heidegger, na defini??o de fenomenologia como hermen?utica atrav?s da retomada do sentido do ser no Dasein, que ? conhecida sob o nome de hermen?utica da facticidade. Primeiramente, tratase do modo de ser da obra de arte como par?metro a fim de se investigar o fen?meno da compreens?o. Assim como a experi?ncia da obra de arte, o conceito de jogo possui um fim em si mesmo, que se configura enquanto o espectador (o jogador) envolve-se no espet?culo (no jogo). Posteriormente, trata-se de pensar o princ?pio da historicidade da compreens?o, o qual inclui a substancialidade da historicidade do int?rprete e a consci?ncia do valor da tradi??o no ato de compreender textos. Aqui, a reabilita??o do preconceito como condi??o de possibilidade do int?rprete torna-se chave. Quando se diz da experi?ncia hermen?utica querse referir ? experi?ncia da finitude humana que nunca ? repetida, e est? em constante processo de aprendizado. Por fim, trata-se do car?ter da linguagem da compreens?o como meio privilegiado da experi?ncia hermen?utica. Especificamente, ? na linguagem - como di?logo - que se mostra o car?ter especulativo, no qual o sentido da coisa em quest?o mostra-se tal e qual ela ?. Nela ? que a compreens?o encontra sua objetividade e, por isso, d? ? compreens?o o car?ter de universalidade. Portanto, a finitude, a historicidade humana e o modo de ser linguagem s?o pressupostos da compreens?o, os quais atuam no acontecer da compreens?o e lhe d?o o car?ter de legitimidade ainda que n?o sejam demonstr?veis.

This doctoral dissertation deals with the contribution of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics to contemporary, ongoing debates on multiculturalism and the dialogue of cultures. Although Gadamer has not developed a political philosophy, he is often regarded as an author who contributed significantly to constructing an alternative account to multiculturalism or the dialogue of cultures. The question that guides the current research is as follows: Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, as a finite reflection is emancipated only in the encounter with the Other and to the extent that it holds that the deepening of self-understanding (Selbstverst?ndnis) is attached to the understanding of other world views and life forms, can it be presented as a rational alternative to multiculturalism and the dialogue of cultures? The thesis presented here shows precisely that possibility. To the extent that he does not accept a relativistic idea of absolute incommensurability or incommunicability of the diverse world views and ways of life, and insofar as he defends a critical dialogue based on the art of asking questions and being open, Gadamer proposes a rationality that carries nearly universal standards for a dialogue of cultures or multiculturalism.
A presente tese trata da contribui??o da hermen?utica filos?fica de Gadamer ao debate contempor?neo sobre multiculturalismo e di?logo de culturas. Embora Gadamer n?o tenha desenvolvido uma filosofia pol?tica, em diversos momentos ? lembrado como um autor que contribuiu significativamente na constru??o de uma alternativa ao multiculturalismo ou mesmo ao di?logo de culturas. A quest?o que orienta a presente investiga??o ? a seguinte: a hermen?utica filos?fica de Gadamer, enquanto uma reflex?o finita que se emancipa somente no encontro com o outro na medida em que entende que o aprofundamento da autocompreens?o (Selbstverst?ndnis) est? unido ao entendimento de outras vis?es de mundo e formas de vida, pode ser apresentada como uma racionalidade alternativa ao multiculturalismo ou di?logo de culturas? A tese ora apresentada evidencia tal possibilidade. Na medida em que n?o aceita uma ideia relativista de absoluta incomensurabilidade ou incomunicabilidade das diversas vis?es de mundo e formas de vida e, ao defender um di?logo cr?tico baseado na arte de perguntar e estar aberto a perguntas, Gadamer prop?e uma racionalidade que carrega padr?es quase universais para um di?logo de culturas ou multiculturalismo.

In this thesis we argue that the development of an ethics is present in the whole hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer. We came to this conclusion following Gadamer?s interpretation of the practical philosophy of Plato and Aristotle. We also achieved this idea through the recognition of the similarity between the proposal of a hermeneutical understanding and moral phenomena considered since the Socratic question about the good. In this sense, the conceptual framework that connects Gadamer?s philosophy and an ethics of dialogue is grounded in both the hermeneutical tradition and in his reinterpretation of the concept of Aristotelic phronesis and the Platonic dialogue. In our view, one of the most important contribution of the ?hermeneutical ethics of dialogue? was to seek a new basis for the discussion on ethical behavior. This is a concept of dialogue that identifies in the project of a human solidarity the possibility for the emergence of actions aimed at taking care of the other seeking the public well-being. Therefore, Gadamer?s hermeneutics reaffirms the importance of philosophy to evaluate the fundamental issues of our practical reality and allowing a rich debate of philosophy and other sciences (medicine, law, education).
Defendemos neste trabalho que a elabora??o de uma ?tica est? presente em toda a hermen?utica de Hans-Georg Gadamer. Chegamos a essa tese por meio da interpreta??o que Gadamer faz da filosofia pr?tica de Plat?o e Arist?teles e do reconhecimento da semelhan?a entre a proposta de uma compreens?o hermen?utica e os fen?menos morais considerados desde a pergunta socr?tica sobre o bem. Resumen
Development of safe and efficient approaches for gene delivery in human embryonic stem cells (hESc) and particularly in human induced pluripotent stem (hiPS) cells, which can be derived in a person-specific manner, is considered to be imperative for harnessing their full potential in both the basic and applied research. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of human artificial chromosome (HAC) for gene delivery and expression in hESc and hiPS cells. HAC offers many potential advantages including the provision for carrying large genes with corresponding regulatory elements to obtain long-term regulated gene expression. In addition, they can replicate and segregate independently without integration into the host cell genome. To develop HAC in hiPS cells, the first part of the study was aimed at generating hiPS cells utilising the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)-1 amplicon system. With the use of EBNA-1/OriP retention elements incorporated into the HSV-1 amplicon vectors, hiPS cells completely free of vector and transgenes sequences were successfully derived from human embryonic fibroblasts. The hiPS cells exhibited proliferation and differentiation potential similar to that of hESc. In the second part of the study, development of HAC in hESc and hiPS cells was assessed by utilising the HSV-1 amplicon system to deliver the HAC DNA. Analysis of the hESc confirmed the presence of functional HAC which replicated the behaviour of the host chromosomes. Additionally, HAC generation did not lead to impairment in the developmental potential and pluripotency of hESc. The hiPS cells supported HAC at low frequency but DNA also integrated into the host chromosomes. The HAC system, therefore, needs further refinements to improve the frequency of HAC formation and reduce the chromosomal integration of HAC constructs in hiPS cells. Overall, these findings provide a simple and safe way of pluripotency induction and genetic modification of pluripotent stem cells using the HSV-1 amplicon system and represent an important advance towards patient specific gene and cell therapy.

This thesis explores the creative function of the pseudonym Sara Sand, used by the author Stina Aronson for four literary works in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Två herrar blev nöjda (Two gentlemen were content), Fabeln om Valentin (The tale of Valentin), Tolv hav (Twelve oceans) and Syskonbädd (Siblingbed) are modernist and experimental works that I approach with an experimental way of reading. In order to emphasize what I find to be an inherent strive for freedom within these texts, I draw from Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattaris notion of desire as a productive force and their view of the text as a rhizomatic structure, as presented in Anti-Oedipus (1972) and A Thousand Plateaus (1980). The characters in Sara Sands writing are in constant movement and in continuous processes of becomings which challenges any kind of fixity, whether that be social structures and hegemonic discourses or simply the individual self.

Data visualization has been recognized as an important tool in communicating data-related findings. Figures often contain a dense amount of information and readers rely on accompanying text to help guide them to the important takeaways. Captions provide the reader with the context needed to interpret visualizations and help tie together the written and visual narratives. Alt-text also plays a role in making the visualization accessible to a broader audience, translating visual cues for those with visual impairments. However, the art of writing captions and other accompanying text for visualizations has rarely been explicitly taught as a companion to the pedagogy of effective data visualization. We describe a variety of classroom activities and assignments that explicitly focus on what makes an effective caption, interpreted broadly, and that build awareness for a variety of audiences for data-related findings.

Эпически-возвышенные характеристики исторических персонажей соответствовали определенным каноническим представлениям о герое истории, не предполагавшем противоречивости. Пример сочинения П. Ю. Львова раскрывает особенности беллетризации деятельности героев российской истории, создания словесных монументов, готовых для воплощения скульптором или художником. Творчество Н. М. Карамзина, всецело разделявшего такой подход, свидетельствовало о продвижении по пути объективности и критики в истории. Idea of a heroic personage in Russian history of the early 19th century had been forming in common aspiration of the historians, writers, artists. Epic and sublime images of the historic figures appeared in accordance with certain canonic rules of the heroes’ representation. P. Lvov’s book is an example of historic popular fiction with the heroes presented like verbal monuments ready to be depicted by a sculptor or painter. Great Russian historian N. Karamzin who contributed to this way of commemoration, in his historical writings moved forward in direction of the historical objectivity and critics.

The need for resilience has been widely acknowledged in all social and cultural settings in the context of the pandemic crisis that has shaken humanity. Recent studies show that the psychological effects of the pandemic include anxiety, depression, severe disruption of family relationships and divorce. The context thus created brings into question the importance of emotional education. We are witnessing the transfer of responsibility for the development of young people’s emotional intelligence from the family to the school. Starting from the premise that moral education is linked to affective education, integrating it, and that the contents and teaching tools specific to moral education can also support emotional education, we will show in this article that fairy tales, as an artistic pro¬duct with profound educational implications, can be used to develop the affective-emotional dimension, even in relation to the ability to be resilient. This assertion is based on the preliminary results of a pedagogical experiment we are carrying out, focused on determining the cognitive, affective and volitional effects of the reception of fairy tales in schools, through the dramatization method. Constantly used to develop skills specific to moral education, the fairy tale provides many models of resilience. The fairytale world is a world that essentialises the real world. The characters and the situations in which they evolve are symbolic, so that reception through interpretation makes it possible to relate the same fairy-tale image to countless real-life situations. Studying fairy-tales in school could be one of the solutions at hand for cultivating resilience in the family.

This new power cycle is derived from a simplified HAT cycle, with a partial recirculation of the exhaust gases added with respect to the traditional HAT configuration. The basic idea of applying recirculation to the HAT cycle stems from the interesting performance levels and general environmental advantages obtainable applying this technique to combined-cycle (SCGT/CC) and regenerative GT solutions (SCGT/RE); these power plants all share the integration with CO2 chemical scrubbing of the exhaust stack in order to reduce greenhouse effects. A relevant advantage of the proposed configuration over the original HAT solution is the possibility of complete water recovery from the separator before the recirculation node; here the temperature level is necessarily very low, allowing thus condensation of water produced by the natural-gas combustion process. This allows the self–sustainement of the HAT cycle, from the water consumption point of view, without any external supply. For the water separator, two thermodynamic models were developed (respectively simulating a single- and a multiple temperature condensation process), which have provided similar results. The whole cycle is modeled using a modular code, thoroughly tested against the performance of a large set of existing GTs. The layout is derived from an existing HAT configuration, with suppression of the economizer section in the regenerator and the possible practice of external (non-recuperative) intercooling between the two compressors. The first choice is imposed by the presence of an additional low-temperature heat load for the CO2 removal plant, while the second is sometimes necessary depending on the compressor pressure ratios and the possibility of including inside the cycle low-temperature internal cycle regeneration. The expected performance of the plant is relatively high and close to those typical of HAT, SCGT/RE and SCGT/CC cycles: a LHV-based efficiency level exceeding 50% inclusive of CO2 separation and delivery at ambient pressure and temperature; the specific work levels — in the range of 680 kJ/kg for the basic configuration — are lower than those of the HAT cycle but larger than for SCGT/CC and SCGT/RE solutions; the cycle requires relatively high overall pressure ratios (35–40). A notable improvement in specific work can be obtained with reheat.

Immune thrombocytopenia has been recognized as a major hematologic manifestation associated with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS) and AIDS-related complexes. The mechanism of thrombocytopenia in human immune deficiency virus infection is probably multifactorial.. The role of platelet-associated immuno-globulin(PAIgG)and circulating immune complexes(CIC) in mediating thrombocytopenia is controversial.. We experienced a case in which immune thrombocytopenia in AIDS-related complexes resolved during herpes zoster infection. A 37 y.o. white homosexual male with AIDS-related complexes and thrombocytopenia presented a 4-day history of painful, violaceous, non-pruritic vesicles which started on the right arm and hand, which then progressed to the chest wall, abdomen, back, and left arm. Peripheral lymphadenop-athy and splenomegaly was not noted. On admission WBG 13.5 Hct 40.8, platelet 46,000, Tzanck smear of vesicles revealed herpetic type giant cells. HTLV-III pos., Helper/suppressor T-cell ratio 0.3, Total protein 7.9 gm%, . Alb 3.95gm% IgG 1740 mg%, IgA 157 mg IgM 91.2 mg, Monospot neg., HBsAg Neg., HBsAb pos., HBcAb pos., VDRL neg. Before this admission, immune thrombocytopenia was documented by increased levels of PAIgG, CIC, bone marrow magakaryocytic hyperplasia, peripheral thrombocytopenia with giant platelets, absence of splenomegaly, and response to prednisone. He was treated with Acyclovir 250 mg/m2 1-hr infusion Q8h for 9 days ;to control the spread of his herpes infection. Recovery of thrombocytopenia wasobserved during herpes zo.ster infection. The platelet count rose to 158,000 and sustained over 4- weeks. Duringnormalization of platelet count thelevel of GIC (assayed by Raji cells, reference ranges, less than 12) droppedfrom 300 to less than 12 and PAIgG(fluorescence-activated flow cytometric assay, reference ranges, less than 1.5 RF) was markedly decreased from 90 to 2.9 When herpes infection had subsided the platelet count again decreased. These findings suggestthat PAIgG and GIG were contributing factors to immune thrombocytopenia and that herpes viral infection and Acyclovir altered this immunologically mediated thrombocytopenia in AIDS-related complexes.

Tumors in commercial poultry are caused mainly by infection with avian herpes and retroviruses, the herpesvirus Marek's disease virus (MDV) and the retroviruses, reticuloendotheliosis (REV), lymphoid leukosis, subgroups A-I and J (ALV and ALV-J) in chickens, or Iymphoprolipherative disease (LPDV) in turkeys. Infection with one virus aggravates the clinical outcome of birds that are already infected by another oncogenic virus. As these viruses do not interfere for infection, MDV and one or more retroviruses can infect the same flock, the same bird and the same cell. While infecting the same cell, herpes and retroviruses might interact in at least three ways: a) Integration of retrovirus genomes, or genomic fragments (mainly the LTR) into MDV;b) alteration of LTR-driven expression of retroviral genes by MDV immediate- early genes, and c) by herpesvirus induced cellular transcriptional factors. The first type of molecular interaction have been demonstrated to happen efficiently in vitro by Dr. Kung, in cases multiple infection of cell cultures with MDV and REV or MDV and ALV. Moreover, Dr. Witter showed that an in vitro-created recombinant, RM1, had altered in vitro replication and in vivo biological properties. A more comprehensive characterization of RM1 was carried out in the present project. We sought to highlight whether events of such integrations occur also in the bird, in vivo. For that, we had first to determine the prevalence of dually-infected individual birds in commercial flocks, as no systematic survey has been yet reported. Surprisingly, about 25% of the commercial flocks infected with avian oncogenic viruses had a multiple virus infection and 5% of the total samples ana lysed had multiple virus sequences. Then, we aimed to evaluate and characterize biologically and molecularly the resulting recombinants, if formed, and to analyse the factors that affect these events (virus strains, type and age of birds and time interval between the infection with both viruses). The perception of retrovirus insertions into herpesviruses in vivo is not banal, as the in vivo and in vitro systems differ in the viral-target cells, lymphocytes or fibroblasts, in the MDV-replicative type, transforming or productive, and the immune system presence. We realized that previous methods employed to study in vitro created recombinant viruses were not adequate for the study of samples taken directly from the bird. Therefore, the Hot Spot-combined PCR was developed based on the molecularly known RM1 virus. Also, the PFGE that was used for tissue cultured-MDV separation was inefficient for separating MDV from organs, but useful with feather tips as a source of bird original MDV. Much attention was dedicated now to feathers, because if a recombinant virus would be formed in vivo, its biological significance would be evident by horizontal dissemination through the feathers. Major findings were: a) not only in vitro, but also in vivo MDV and retrovirus co-infections lead to LTR integrations into MDV. That was shown by the detection of chimeric molecules. These appeared in low quantities and as quasispecies, thus interfering with sequence analysis of cloned gel-purified chimeric molecules. Mainly inserts were located in the repeat long MDV fragments. In field birds chimeric molecules were detected at a lower frequency (2.5%) than in experimentally infected birds (30-50%). These could be transmitted experimentally to another birds by inoculation with chimeric molecules containing blood. Several types of chimeric molecules were formed, and same types were detected in birds infected by a second round. To reproduce viral integrations, in vivo infection trials were done with field inoculate that contained both viruses, but the chimeric molecule yield was undetectable.

The goal of this project was to provide scientific and technical basis for initiating the development of breeding protocols using marker assisted selection for viral disease resistance in common carp. The specific objectives were: 1) Establishing families and characterizing the phenotypic and genetic variation of viral resistance; 2) Measuring the dynamics of immune response and developing a method to measure the long term immune memory; 3) Developing markers and generating a new genetic linkage map, which will enable initial QTL mapping; and, 4) Identifying genetic linkage of markers and candidate genes (like MHC and TLRs) with resistance to CyHV-3. The common carp is an important farmed freshwater fish species in the world. Edible carp is second only to tilapia in Israeli aquaculture production and ornamental carp (koi) is an important product in both the US and Israel. Carp industries worldwide have recently suffered enormous economic damage due to a viral disease caused by Cyprinid herpes virus 3 (CyHV-3). Aside from preventative measures, a sustainable solution to this problem will be to establish a genetic improvement program of the resistance of fish to the pathogen. The aims of the project was to take the necessary first steps towards that. The differences in survival rates after infection with CyHV-3 virus among 20 families from six types of crosses between three carp lines (two commercial lines and one wild-type carp) revealed that the wild-type carp and its crosses had a much-improved survival over the crosses of the commercial lines themselves. These crosses set the starting point for breeding of commercial strains with improved resistance. Resistant fish had lower antibody titer against the virus suggesting that resistance might depend more on the innate immunity. A set of 500 microsateliite markers was developed and the markers are currently being used for generating a genetic linkage map for carp and for identifying disease resistance QTL. Fourteen candidate immune genes, some of which were duplicated, were cloned from the carp and SNP markers were identified in them. The expression of these genes varied between tissues and suggested functional divergence of some duplicated genes. Initial association between CyHV-3 resistance and one of the genes was found when SNP alleles in these genes were tested for their segregation between susceptible and resistant progeny. The results of this project have implications to the development of viral resistant commercial carp strains and effective immunization against this aggressive disease. The genetic and immunological knowledge accumulated in this project will not only promote carp and koi production but will also contribute to a broader understanding of fish immunogenetics.

In this project we proposed to characterize the virus genome and the structural virion polypeptides to allow development of improved diagnostic approaches and potential vaccination strategies. These goals have been mostly achieved and the corresponding data were published in three papers (see below) and three more manuscripts are in preparation. The virion polypeptides of KHV strains isolated from USA (KHV-U) and Israel (KHV-I) were found to be identical. Purified viral DNA analyzed with a total of 5 restriction enzymes demonstrated no fragment length polymorphism between KHV-I and KHV-U but both KHV isolates differed significantly from the cyprinid herpesvirus (CHV) and the ictalurid herpesvirus (channel catfish virus or CCV). Using newly obtained viral DNA sequences two different PCR assays were developed that need to be now further tested in the field. We determined by pulse field analysis that the size of KHV genome is around 280 kbp (1-1. Bercovier, unpublished results). Sequencing of the viral genome of KHV has reached the stage where 180 kbp are sequenced (twice and both strands). Four hypothetical genes were detected when DNA sequences were translated into amino acid sequences. The finding of a gene of real importance, the thymidine kinase (TK) led us to extend the study of this specific gene. Four other genes related to DNA synthesis were found. PCR assays based on defined sequences were developed. The PCR assay based on TK gene sequence has shown improved sensitivity in the detection of KHV DNA compared to regular PCR assays. </P> <P><SPAN>With the ability to induce experimental infections in koi with KHV under controlled laboratory conditions we have studied the progress and distribution of virus in host tissues, the development of immunity and the establishment of latent infections. Also, we have investigated the important role of water temperature on severity of infections and mortality of koi following infections with KHV. These initial studies need to be followed by an increased focus on long-term fate of the virus in survivors. This is essential in light of the current &quot;controlled exposure program&quot; used by farmers to produce KHV &quot;naturally resistant fish&quot; that may result in virus or DNA carriers. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN>The information gained from the research of this project was designed to allow implementation of control measures to prevent the spread of the virus both by improved diagnostic approaches and preventive measures. We have accomplished most of these goals but further studies are needed to establish even more reliable methods of prevention with increased emphases on improved diagnosis and a better understanding of the ecology of KHV. </SPAN>

Presented at the 10th Annual Conference on Global Economic Analysis, Purdue University, USA Team research has been much more widespread in the natural sciences than in economics. Yet when it comes to modeling an economy (especially the global economy) in detail, the quantity and range of inputs necessary makes team work the only viable option. Drawing some inspiration from Australian experience, GTAP’s founder, Tom Hertel, realized this from his Project’s inception in 1993. The data base required to model international trade flows could not have been developed without the enthusiastic cooperation of many individuals and institutions around the world. Funding GTAP’s central team at Purdue required external support. National agencies in Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Japan, and the US are members of the supporting research consortium. The natural interest of international economic agencies led to GTAP having five such supporting agencies by 1997, which grew to ten by 2006. GTAP has striven to put the maximum feasible amount of its data, methodology and models into the public domain. It has run numerous residential intensive training courses in the use of the GTAP data and model: these have been held in the US, Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. The success of these courses reflects the modeling experience of the teams of course instructors and the availability of special-purpose software which allows simulations to be run without programming skill or previous knowledge of the software used. Researchers making use of GTAP have been prolific in number, and in their output. In mid April 2007, applications on the GTAP web site numbered 781. There were 366 subscribers to the GTAP data base at the end of April 2007, but the number of individuals making use of GTAP data exceeded 4,000.

Aquacultured koi and common carp fish (Cyprinus carpio) are intensively bred as ornamental and food fish in many countries worldwide. Hatcheries of carp and koi have recently suffered massive financial damages due to two viral diseases caused by the Cyprinid herpesvirus-3 (CyHV-3), previously designated as Carp Interstitial Nephritis and Gill Necrosis Virus (CNGV) and Koi herpesvirus (KHV), and by the Spring Viremia of Carp Virus (SVCV). CyHV-3 is a large dsDNA virus, which is infectious mostly to koi and common carp, while SVCV is a rhabdovirus with a relatively broad host range. Both viruses induce contagious disease with mortality rate up to 90%. Strategies for the control of viral infection in fish are of limited use. While efforts to prevent introduction of infectious agents into culture facilities are desirable, such exclusion strategies are far from fail-safe. Extensive vaccination methods that are useful for use in aquaculture facilities produce weak immunity, when used with proteins or inactivated viruses. Methods to overcome this obstacle are to vaccinate the fish with large amounts of antigen and/or use adjuvant and immune modulators over a long period. These techniques usually require individual handling of the fish. On the other hand, live attenuated virus is efficient and economical when used as an immersionvaccine. However, this technique poses certain environmental risks and thus may be difficult to license and scale up. Another option is a vaccine based on the replication defective virus (RDV) (pseudovirus), which can infect cells, but is unable to produce infectious particles. This vaccine may circumvent many of the problems related to attenuated-live vaccine (e.g., inadvertent infection and reversion to the virulent strain).

Review question / Objective: The study aims to synthesize, through a review of existing scientific literature, the Health State Utility Value (HSUV) of patients with herpes zoster or postherpetic neuralgia. Condition being studied: Herpes zoster is caused by the reactivation of a primary varicella zoster virus infection. Postherpetic neuralgia is the most common complication, which is defined as pain in a dermal distribution that is maintained for at least 90 days after the rash. The pain caused by postherpetic neuralgia is often debilitating and affects physical functioning, psychological and well-being. Thus, the postherpetic neuralgia has a profound negative impact on functional status and quality of life, and generally results in substantial utilization of health services. An increase in the incidence of post-herpetic neuralgia and herpes zoster is expected, due to the increase in life expectancy, therefore, the result of this review may be important for public policy decisions.

This tutorial is about building up a COMSOL model for a robot ant. In this model, we have a robot with a size of a few centimeters and which is based on piezoelectric ceramics. This robot has already been built by the University of Michigan and some COMSOL models only for the legs’ operation are already existing and are published. From what we know, the full ant robot had not been computationally simulated before. Here, we provide a tutorial on how to successfully achieve this task. The land-use augmented version of the GTAP Data Base has been used for a wide variety of applications (Hertel, Rose, & Tol, 2009). The original GTAP-AEZ database incorporated geospatial data on land use into the version 6 GTAP Data Base, with a benchmark year of 2001. The methodology for integrating this information into the GTAP-AEZ framework is documented by Lee et al. (2009). This database has been updated for 2004 using the version 7 GTAP Data Base, national-level crop production data from FAOSTAT and updated time-series data on cropland and pasture cover developed by Navin Ramankutty (2011). For version 7, the original geospatial data on crop production circa 2000 from Monfreda et al. (2008) was used since updates for this data are currently unavailable. This memorandum documents how the land use data has been updated for use in the version 8 data base. In keeping with the multi-year release of v.8, the Land Use Data Base is updated to two base years: 2004 and 2007. This update heavily relies on the methods outlined by Avetisyan, Baldos and Hertel (2010), but there are some changes in sources and procedures, as will become evident in the comparisons of the v.7-2004 and v.8-2004 data bases.

Review question / Objective: The type of study was clinical randomized controlled trial (RCT). The object of study is the patients with HFMD. There is no limit to gender and race. In the case of clear diagnosis standard, curative effect judgment standard and consistent baseline treatment, the experimental group was treated with pure oral liquid of traditional Chinese medicine(A: Fuganlin oral liquid, B: huangzhihua oral liquid, C: Lanqin oral liquid, D: antiviral oral liquid, E: Huangqin oral liquid, F: Pudilan oral liquid, G: Shuanghuanglian oral liquid.)and the control group was treated with ribavirin or any oral liquid of traditional Chinese medicine. The data were extracted by two researchers independently, cross checked and reviewed according to the pre-determined tables. The data extraction content is (1) Basic information (including the first author, published journal and year, research topic). (2) Relevant information (including number of cases, total number of cases, gender, age, intervention measures, course of treatment of the experimental group and the control group in the literature). (3) Design type and quality evaluation information of the included literature. (4) Outcome measures (effective rate, healing time of oral ulcer, regression time of hand and foot rash, regression time of fever, adverse reactions.). The seven traditional Chinese medicine oral liquids are comparable in clinical practice, but their actual clinical efficacy is lack of evidence-based basis. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to use the network meta-analysis method to integrate the clinical relevant evidence of direct and indirect comparative relationship, to make quantitative comprehensive statistical analysis and sequencing of different oral liquid of traditional Chinese medicine with the same evidence body for the treatment of the disease, and then to explore the advantages and disadvantages of the efficacy and safety of different oral liquid of traditional Chinese medicine to get the best treatment plan, so as to provide reference value and evidence-based medicine evidence for clinical optimization of drug selection. Condition being studied: Hand foot mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease in pediatrics caused by a variety of enteroviruses. Its clinical manifestations are mainly characterized by persistent fever, hand foot rash, oral herpes, ulcers, etc. Because it is often found in preschool children, its immune system development is not perfect, so it is very vulnerable to infection by pathogens and epidemic diseases, resulting in rapid progress of the disease. A few patients will also have neurogenic pulmonary edema Meningitis, myocarditis and other serious complications even lead to death, so effectively improve the cure rate, shorten the course of disease, prevent the deterioration of the disease as the focus of the study. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine has played an important role in the research of antiviral treatment. Many clinical practices have confirmed that oral liquid of traditional Chinese medicine can effectively play the role of antiviral and improve the body's immunity.
