Favalli, Alessandra. "Le rang et la dynastie : les Este à la recherche d'un équilibre politique dans l'espace italien et européen à l'époque des guerres de religion françaises (1559-1580)". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021UPSLN005.
Texto completoThe aim of this doctoral thesis is to study the quality and evolution of the relations between the Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso II d'Este, and the French crown, from the restoration of peace in 1559 between the Valois and the Habsburgs with the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis (2-3 April 1559) and during the following twenty years, until 1580. However, this is not an analysis aimed at deepening the relations between the ducal power of Ferrara and the French monarchy from a strictly diplomatic point of view. I have preferred to study the links between the Duke of Ferrara and the Valois kingdom through the family network that the former had on the other side of the Alps, thanks to the matrimonial alliance signed between the Este and the Guise in 1548, and which in 1559 still existed and was fully functional. From the European framework of the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis, we would like to shed light on the hopes, the level of autonomy, the oscillations, and the modes of action that the House of Este implemented in the face of Spanish preponderance through its links with the Kingdom of France. In addition to an international approach, we study the effects on the system of equilibrium and competition between the Italian courts through the red thread of the dispute for precedence between Este and Medici. Through the relations of the Este with the French Crown, we try to analyse not only the relationship between these two entities and the real contractual power of the Duke of Ferrara, but also the balances and influences of other Italian dynasties, such as the Savoy and the Medici, in the same context. This is also reflected in the sources that constitute the documentary framework of my thesis, i.e. the correspondence of the Este agents in the kingdom of France in the first place, which has been cross-referenced with that of the Savoy and Medici envoys, and of the ambassadors of the Republic of Venice and the apostolic nuncios, as well as with the family correspondences. Finally, it is a question of determining the negotiating power and the margins of initiative of the Este lineage, a ducal house at the head of an independent Italian state but linked by feudal ties to the Empire and the Papacy, in the face of the indirect tutelage of Spain and the geopolitical disorder produced by the French Wars of Religion

Texto completoThe thesis offers, by the analysis of one of its crucial moments, an original interpretation of the relationship between Catholicism and Nation. Until now, historians have interpreted the legitimization/sanctification of the Great War by the European Catholic churches as a form of yielding, or concession. Anxious to demonstrate their 'patriotism' (and hence escape decades of exclusion from European lay politics), they conveniently forgot their pacifism just as they did their internationalism, as happened in the case of the summer 1914 collapse of the Second International. However, a very different picture of how the Catholic churches adhered to the Great War emerges from an analysis of the acts of consecration to the Sacred Heart. Practices of the Christianising of war and the Nations involved in fighting it speak not of concession but rather of 'action' (John L. Austin), of a symbolic reconquering, consequently suggesting that we reconsider the relationship between Catholicism and Nation, and also the integration of Catholics within the Nation-State in Italy and France in terms of 'hegemony'. A study in both histoire croisée and comparative history; this thesis not only encompasses the rituals (and the 'dreams') of French and Italian Catholics, but also the reactions of the Kingdom of Italy and the French Republic, in addition to anticlerical opinion. It aims to grasp the glances thrown between each of these 'actors', and also my own 'observer's gaze' - with its own specific cultural background and way of relating to the 'actors' I study

Texto completoThis dissertation consists of a critical edition, Italian translation and introductory essay to Jean Bodin's Methodus ad facilem historiarum cognitionem. Jean Bodin (1530-1596) is best known as the author of the Six livres de la République (1576), a true masterpiece of sixteenth-century political thought. First published in Paris in 1566, the Methodus was then reworked, revised and augmented by Bodin, and printed again by the same editor in 1572. The Methodus belongs to a crucial and fascinanting period of Bodin's thought, which was then still largely evolving. The République is still a long way to come, and yet one can already spot in the Methodus a few hints of Bodin's ongoing journey from constitutionnalism (basically, the idea of a monarchy limited by a range of checks and balances) to absolute sovereignty – a concept that Bodin formulates for the first time in 1576, and that represents a crucial step in modern political theory. This edition results from systematic comparisons between the first two French editions (1566, 1572), the only ones directly supervised by the author himself. All of the variants and additions which Bodin made in view of the second edition of 1572 have been carefully identified, shown in the critical apparatus, and thoroughly discussed. Thanks to this fresh textual material, it will now be possible to study the evolution of Bodin's thought more closely across this crucial decade, 1566-1576; it will also be possible to recontextualise Bodin's political ideas, to formulate new hypothesis concerning their genesis, and hopefully to better grasp differences and analogies between the Methodus and the République. In the introductory essay, a few points are made to argue in favour of the internal unity of the Methodus and its relative autonomy vis-à-vis the République. Then, using abundant evidence yielded by the variants and additions of 1572, it is argued that, contrarily to what many believe, there was nothing like an “absolutist turn” in Bodin's thought, and that Bodin's drifting away from constitutionnalism towards “absolute sovereignty” should not be too rigidly connected with St Bartholomew's massacre and with the consequent polemics against the monarchomaques. As far as Bodin is concerned, indeed, his intellectual evolution had taken an anti-constitutionnalist direction well before August 1572, for reasons which seem to owe less to the political context of 1570's France, than to a concern for conceptual exactness and consistency which is in fact quite typical of this author

Texto completoThe Italian Army and the Conquest of Catalonia (1808-1811) A Study of Military Effectiveness in Napoleonic Europe Academic Fields and Disciplines SPS/03 – M-STO/02 The research has the purpose of reconstruct and evaluate the military effectiveness of the Italian Army existed under the reign of Napoleon I. Firstly through a statistic and strategic analysis of the development, and the following deployment, of the military institution of the Kingdom of Italy in the years of its existence (1805-14). Afterwards, a particularly significant case study was chosen, as the campaign of Catalonia (1808-11, in the context of the Peninsular War), in order to assess the operational and tactical contribution of the regiments sent by the Government of Milan and their integration in the overall military apparatus of the First Empire. The thesis wanted to respond to the lack of studies on the Italian army’s behavior in war and, at the same time, to introduce the methodology of the Military Effectiveness Studies (of British and American origin and, by now, enriched by a thirty-year old tradition) in the Italian historiography. The research is primarily based, besides the numerous memoirs of the Italian and French veterans, on the archive documentation of the Secrétairerie d’état impériale (Archives Nationales of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Paris), of the French Ministère de la Guerre (Service historique de la Défence, of Vincennes, Paris) and of the Italian Ministero della Guerra (Archivio di Stato di Milano). About the results, it has been verified how the Italian army has become a flexible and suitable instrument for Bonaparte, albeit in a context of substantial overall numerical marginality in comparison to the heterogeneous forces available to the Empire and its others satellites and allied states. Regarding the campaign of Catalonia, instead, it was possible to ascertain the fundamental contribution of the Italian regiments, in an operational and tactical perspective, for the success of the invasion. This was primarily due to the excellent general characteristics shown by the expeditionary force, but also to disciplinary and organizational peculiarities that have made the Italian corps suitable for particularly aggressive operations.
