Texto completoNumerical modelling is a widely used tool in applied geoscience for quantifying flow in porous media, that is necessary to predict performance and optimize prospect exploitation at minimal environmental risk and cost. Reaching a satisfactory approximation of the exact solution and a robust numerical model of multiphase flows is particularly challenging because of the heterogeneity of the porous medium across a wide range of length scales, the coupling and nonlinearity of the driving equations, and the necessity of capturing all scales in the macroscale numerical model in a computationally efficient way. We have developed a sequential approach to accelerate immiscible multiphase flow modelling in heterogeneous porous media using discontinuous Galerkin methods and dynamic mesh coarsening. This approach involves dynamic domain decomposition and different solution strategies in the different flow regions, using a criterion that can be fastly evaluated. We use high-resolution grids and low order methods in regions near the saturation discontinuity and a discontinuous Galerkin method along with low-resolution grids in single-phase flow regions of the domain. We present a fast technique to estimate the position of the saturation front and identify the flow zones that need high-resolution gridding and eventually, we demonstrate the accuracy of our approach through test cases from the second SPE10 model by comparing our results with fine-scale simulations

Texto completoTo target more profitable oil and gas deposits, the numerical simulation is of growing interest in the oil sector. In this context, two main types of applications are distinguished: reservoir engineering where geological models are defined as static and exploration for the simulation of hydrocarbons formation. The latter application requires dynamic basins models. For this type of simulation, mathematical and numerical modeling has been an important advance in recent years. However, the construction of meshes needed for the simulations is a difficult task in the case of complex and dynamic geometries. The difficulty is reflected by the characteristic of the domain to mesh, which is defined from the mechanics of granular media which are almost incompressible and heterogeneous environments. In addition, the seismic data represent non-implicit surfaces modeling volume blocks. In this context, we focus on Lagrangian hex-dominant mesh generation of basins with complex geometry. The desired mesh must contain a layer of almost hexahedral meshes between two horizons and conform to fault surfaces through these horizons. A novel methodology based on the construction of an unfolded space is introduced. The desired mesh is then seen as a constrained 3D grid in this novel space. Several mesh optimization techniques are also proposed

Texto completoIn Aeronautics, Defense and Space, dynamic fragmentation is a process generated by extreme loadings. Among the Lagrangian approaches, classically used for the modeling of such events, we focus here on the meshless method called SPH. Unlike grid-based methods, SPH is built on a set of interpolation points disregarding any connectivity which makes it naturally well suited to handle material failure. However, standard SPH schemes suffer from instabilities questioning their accuracy and activating non-physical processes such as numerical fragmentation. A new robust SPH scheme called γ-SPH-ALE is then proposed in this work. It is built in an ALE context and includes a stabilizing low-Mach scheme inherited from Finite Volume methods. Through a nonlinear stability analysis, CFL conditions are identified on the scheme parameters. A strong mathematical background is then built ensuring the scheme conservativity, robustness, stability and consistency. To our knowledge, this type of nonlinear analysis has never been performed on a SPH-ALE scheme. Finally, the implementation of γ-SPH-ALE on various academic fragmentation test cases demonstrates particularly its capability to prevent spurious oscillations to appear in elastic waves, as well as to solve the so-called tensile instability, major issues of standard SPH methods. Also, taking advantage of GPU parallelization, these results are achieved in reduced computation times with respect to conventional CPU implementations

Texto completoIn the context of classical molecular dynamics applied to condensed matter physics, CEA researchers are studying complex phenomena at the atomic scale. To do this, it is essential to continuously optimize the molecular dynamics codes of recent massively parallel supercomputers to enable physicists to exploit their capacity to numerically reproduce more and more complex physical phenomena. Nevertheless, simulation codes must be adapted to balance the load between the cores of supercomputers. To do this, in this thesis we propose to incorporate the Adaptive Mesh Refinement method into the ExaSTAMP molecular dynamics code. The main objective is to optimize the computation loop performing the calculation of particle interactions using multi-threaded and vectorizable data structures. The structure also reduces the memory footprint of the simulation. The design of the AMR is guided by the need for load balancing and adaptability raised by sets of particles moving dynamically over time. The results of this thesis show that using an AMR structure in ExaSTAMP improves its performance. In particular, the AMR makes it possible to execute 1.31 times faster than before the simulation of a violent shock causing a tin microjet of 1 billion 249 million atoms on 256 KNLs. In addition, simulations that were not conceivable so far can be carried out thanks to AMR, such as the impact of a tin nanodroplet on a solid surface with more than 500 million atoms

Texto completoNumerical simulation of turbulent aerodynamics flows remains challenging. Such fluid-structure interaction problem involves generally a thin layer close to the wall where the fluid is slow down, called boundary layer. This latter requires a carefull study of the boundary layer since it is crucial regarding the accuracyof the complete flow computation. Therefore, a fine and structured mesh is needed close to the wall. In this work, we propose a novel automatic procedure to build a correct boundary layer mesh according to the theory and the flow parameters. Moreover, in order to describe exactly the behaviour of the flow on the whole domain, the boundary layer mesh is combined with a dynamic mesh adaptation method. It follows an advanced version of the edge based mesh adaptation method. Combined together, they ensure a fine and structured mesh in the boundarylayer while all the flow vortices are accurately resolved. This new method, called boundary-volume mesh adaptation, has been validated on several 2D and 3Dtest cases with complex geometries. Results emphasises the capacity ofthe approach and offer opportunities of improvement for numerical fluid mechanics mesh adaptation

Texto completoThis work aims to extend acceleration techniques of the Schwarz Domain Decomposition Methods to nonseparable and/or heterogenous problems with free interfaces. The free surface is taken into account by means of a fixed grid technique which uses a Ghost Cell Immersed Boundary approach. To decouple the heterogenous problems from one side to the other of the interface, we extended the Aitken-Schwarz method to the case of Cartesian nonuniform meshes and nonseparable operators. Two major contributions help to get this result: from one side, the development of a Non Uniform Discrete Fourier Transform, based on the values of the function to be approximated at the nonuniform grid points; from the other side, the adaptive construction of the Schwarz acceleration operator, using some a posteriori estimates of the nonuniform Fourier mode convergence
