Halstead, Huw. "'Greeks without Greece' : local homelands, national belonging, and transnational histories amongst the expatriated Greeks of Turkey". Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14279/.

Texto completo
Resumen
In this thesis, I focus on the experiences of the Greeks of Istanbul and Imbros/Gökçeada, who were exempted from the compulsory population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923. Particularly in the years c.1950-1980, members of these communities were faced with persecution in Turkey, and overwhelmingly left their places of birth to resettle in Greece, their purported ‘national homeland’. Drawing on oral history testimonies, written documentation, and participant observation, I explore how the expatriated Greeks of Turkey appealed to and reworked the past as they attempted to establish belonging in their new place of residence, make sense of their recent historical experiences, and communicate these understandings to others. Part I sets out the conceptual, methodological, and historical background of the thesis. In part II, I consider the representation of self and others by the Greeks of Turkey, arguing that they sought to assert both belonging and distinctiveness within the Greek national community by emphasising the specificities of their own local heritages. Part III investigates the ways in which activists and writers from the expatriated community, in their efforts to raise awareness of their experiences of persecution, adopted and adapted archetypes both from Greek nationalist history and the mnemonic repertoires of other communities, and I discuss these discourses in relation to the recent ‘transcultural turn’ in memory studies. In part IV, I turn my attention to the seasonal, semi-permanent, and permanent return of the Greeks to Imbros after 1988, documenting how these more recent developments have impacted upon the community’s relationship to the Greek state, and the transmission of memory and identity to the younger Greek-born generation. I conclude by suggesting that anthropologists and historians can make significant contributions to current scholarly debates concerning national identity and social memory by examining the internal heterogeneity and malleability of ethnicity and nationhood, and how the transcultural circulation of memories makes its presence felt on particular local communities in particular historical contexts.

Gkortsilas, Paschalis. "John Chrysostom and the Greeks : Hellenism and Greek philosophy in the rhetoric of John Chrysostom". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/32070.

Resumen
The aim of the present study is to examine how Hellenism and Greek philosophy were received and used in arguments in the writings of John Chrysostom. The thesis is divided into five chapters of varying lengths, with the fifth chapter being the conclusion of the thesis. Chapter 1 is divided into two major parts. Part A is the story of certain major scholarly works on the topic of Hellenism and Christianity, particularly in late antiquity. Part B turns to previous scholarship on John Chrysostom and Hellenism specifically. We discuss three particular aspects of John’s reception, rhetoric, philosophy, and religious identity while also looking in interpretations from modern scholarship. This part and the chapter conclude with a general overview of the argument and an identification of research gaps. Chapter 2 is divided into five parts. After a discussion of the identity of those called Greeks in John’s corpus we proceed to analyse his extensive criticism of several aspects of Hellenism: philosophy, religion, public attitudes, and the binding power of tradition. The third part goes into the opposite direction and examines instances of John’s positive references to Hellenes and Greek history. In part four we see the reception moving on from the binary of praise and criticism and we discuss examples of both praise and criticism combined, along with indifferent references to Hellenes and John’s practical suggestions on how the Christians should treat the Greeks. In Chapter 3 we examine John’s embodiments of Hellenism and Christianity respectively through his comparisons of individuals. The first three parts consist of major comparisons, which are the most frequent ones in terms of the individuals compared, and minor comparisons, which are smaller treatments and usually group individuals together instead of treating them separately. The fourth part is a close analysis of Chrysostom’s Discourse on Babylas, a treatise that includes a major comparison between Babylas and Diogenes but also provides an opportunity for John to launch a full-scale attack against Hellenism. Finally, in Chapter 4 we will be looking into John’s reception of a specific philosophical school: the Cynics. After situating John’s own texts within previous Christian tradition and assessing differences and similarities, we complete the chapter by a comparison between John and the Cynics and their respective conception of a specific philosophical concept, that of autarkeia.

Resumen
In mathematical finance, the sensitivities of option prices to various market parameters, also known as the “Greeks”, reflect the exposure to different sources of risk. Computing these is essential to predict the impact of market moves on portfolios and to hedge them adequately. This is commonly done using Monte Carlo simulations. However, obtaining accurate estimates of the Greeks can be computationally costly. Multilevel Monte Carlo offers complexity improvements over standard Monte Carlo techniques. However the idea has never been used for the computation of Greeks. In this work we answer the following questions: can multilevel Monte Carlo be useful in this setting? If so, how can we construct efficient estimators? Finally, what computational savings can we expect from these new estimators? We develop multilevel Monte Carlo estimators for the Greeks of a range of options: European options with Lipschitz payoffs (e.g. call options), European options with discontinuous payoffs (e.g. digital options), Asian options, barrier options and lookback options. Special care is taken to construct efficient estimators for non-smooth and exotic payoffs. We obtain numerical results that demonstrate the computational benefits of our algorithms. We discuss the issues of convergence of pathwise sensitivities estimators. We show rigorously that the differentiation of common discretisation schemes for Ito processes does result in satisfactory estimators of the the exact solutions’ sensitivities. We also prove that pathwise sensitivities estimators can be used under some regularity conditions to compute the Greeks of options whose underlying asset’s price is modelled as an Ito process. We present several important results on the moments of the solutions of stochastic differential equations and their discretisations as well as the principles of the so-called “extreme path analysis”. We use these to develop a rigorous analysis of the complexity of the multilevel Monte Carlo Greeks estimators constructed earlier. The resulting complexity bounds appear to be sharp and prove that our multilevel algorithms are more efficient than those derived from standard Monte Carlo.

Resumen
This dissertation seeks to discuss the adjoint approach to solving affine recursion problems (ARPs) in the context of computing sensitivities of financial instruments. It is shown how, by moving from an intuitive 'forward' approach to solving a recursion to an 'adjoint' approach, one might dramatically increase the computational efficiency of algorithms employed to compute sensitivities via the pathwise derivatives approach in a Monte Carlo setting. Examples are illustrated within the context of the Libor Market Model. Furthermore, these ideas are extended to the paradigm of Adjoint Algorithmic Differentiation, and it is illustrated how the use of sophisticated techniques within this space can further improve the ease of use and efficiency of sensitivity calculations.

Resumen
The following study seeks to explore the subjects of Christianisation and Christian identity during the transitional period of the fourth century from an ecclesiological perspective, and argues that the very question of Christian identity is, indeed, an ecclesiological one. It approaches the subject through the writings of Cyril of Jerusalem, specifically his Catechetical Lectures, the earliest complete catechetical programme that has come down to us, making it an invaluable resource for anyone hoping to understand the Catholic Church's efforts to preserve and construct its identity in the wake of Constantine's formal conversion to its faith. Moreover, Cyril, who became bishop of the Holy City around 350, affords us a unique perspective on the question at hand, teaching as he did from the 'very centre of the earth', following the creation of a Christian holy land and pilgrimage centre in the midst of what remained a largely pagan province, and in a city still central to Judaism. The ability to possess the sites and relics associated with the life of Christ and the Prophets for the first time in Christian history not only made the drama of salvation tangible in Jerusalem like nowhere else, but raised new and important questions around the extent to which this sacred topography was compatible with Christianity's departure from the temple-centred worship of the Old Testament. It also provides valuable insight into the relationship between the local and the universal as regards notions of the Church's catholicity, Cyril's definition of καθολικ? in his eighteenth lecture arguably being the earliest. Membership of the Church, and therefore Christian identity, is for Cyril primarily ontological, defined and effected through mysteriological participation, with baptism - the believer's death, rebirth, and union with Christ - representing the dividing line between insider and outsider, a fact enforced by the so-called Disciplina Arcani, by which all knowledge of the Church's sacraments were jealously guarded from the unbaptised. The thesis explores how this notion of ontological membership underpins and informs Cyril's dealings with the various groups against which he sought to define his own community - the Greeks, Jews, and heretics - while also looking at the ecclesiological significance of the baptismal act itself.

Demos, Evangelos. "What are the Successes and Failures of Democracy and its Institutions in post-1975 Greece?" Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/16187.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis examines the successes and failures of democracy and its institutions in post-1975 Greece. As such, it contributes to the area of research by analysing institutions such as the constitution, citizenship, popular sovereignty, political parties, government, checks and balances, public sector, security, elites and finally, the Church of Greece. It is these institutions that have proven to be the most important in Greece and deal with the precedents of governance, state-apparatuses and quasi-state apparatuses. The approach taken in the thesis is from a diachronic perspective that historically analyses and interprets how each of these institutions has evolved since the establishment of the Greek Nation-State in 1821. It also determines the extent to how each institution was functional and dysfunctional. The periods covered are 1821-1974, Chapter 2 1975 – 1985, Chapter 3 1986 – 2000, 2001 – 2007, 2008 – 2016 and 2016 – future. More specifically, the thesis analyses these institutions in detail under the numerous Greek Governments that have been in power since the Metapolitefsi in 1975. This includes those of New Democracy (ND), the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and the current Coalition of the Radial Left (SYRIZA). The thesis, therefore, puts forth that Greece’s politicians in the last 41 years have manipulated the institutions of the Greek Nation-State in order to achieve short term goals for personal interests in the present. Greece’s politicians have thus shown no concern with developing institutions to achieve long-term goals for the interests of the overall Greek Nation both now and in the future. A significant amount of pressure for change must occur in the country, both from Diaspora Greeks and Europeans, if institutions in Greece are to evolve in line with a more democratic nature. Due to limitations, there is, however, more room for research to be conducted in this large area.

Resumen
This thesis examines Greeks who in the fourth century B.C. did not live in the sovereign city- and town-sized communities in which most inhabitants of South Greece spent their lives. In it I argue that the number of Greeks living outside these communities increased very significantly during this period. I examine what Greek cities were destroyed and what Greek cities were founded in the fourth century, considering wherever possible how many Greeks are likely to have been added to or taken from the number of stateless Greeks by these destructions and foundations. I argue that until Alexander the Great and Timoleon began large programmes of settlement in the East and West respectively, there were probably many more Greeks losing their city homes than finding new ones (and that this is in contrast to the position before 400 B.C.). I consider the increasing numbers of Greek mercenaries, pirates, skilled workers and traders. Though people of widely differing kinds entered these occupations, I suggest that the way in which they all grew simultaneously in the fourth century indicates that the movement towards living outside cities was not entirely a response to difficult political circumstances in cities. Though some who were outside cities were so perforce, nevertheless an ideology which treated loosening of city ties as normal was being developed and was contrary to the established ideology whereby πόλις life was definitive of normal Greek life. I suggest that the availability of a large number of people with specialist skills from soldiering to diplomatic and literary skills created a world fit for Hellenistic Kings to live in. They could easily find recruits for their armies and courts. This contributes to explaining how Alexander and his Successors managed to conquer and subdue all Greece, which no power had previously done.

Mitchell, Lynette Gail. "The Greeks and their foreign friendships, 435-336 BC". Thesis, Durham University, 1994. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5486/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The study of Greek politics must begin with study of friendship in the Greek world as the two are inextricably intertwined. The first chapter devotes itself to considering what friendship was for the Greeks, and who they considered their friends to be, and this becomes the basis for considering friendships in political contexts. This thesis is concerned with Greek interstate affairs in the years between 435 and 336, and considers the Greeks and their friends in other states and the impact this had upon domestic and foreign policy. The role of the institution of πpoξɛvía is considered, as the official medium for liaison between poleis, as well as the unofficial contacts. Domestic appointments are also studied, and the effect that "foreign" friendships had on selection for magistracies. Yet the Greeks did not only deal with Greeks, but, within this century, were compelled to look outside their own world and interact with states outside Greece, such as the Persian Empire or Thrace, as well as those on the fringes of their world, particularly Macedon. But these other cultures did not always have the same understanding of what friendship was and what duties and rights were due to friends as the Greeks did, and this led to misunderstandings and difficulties in the relations between Greeks a-Greeks. The differences that could exist were exemplified by the Greeks’ dealings with Philip of Macedon, and the Greeks' failure to realise this contributed largely to their ultimate defeat at Philip's hands. Appendices list holders of diplomatic and military appointments during the period 435-336 for whom we have evidence.

Rhodes, Anthony. "Jacob Burckhardt: History and the Greeks in the Modern Context". PDXScholar, 2011. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/279.

Resumen
In the following study I reappraise the nineteenth century Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt (1818-1897). Burckhardt is traditionally known for having served as the elder colleague and one-time muse of Friedrich Nietzsche at the University of Basel and so his ideas are often considered, by comparison, outmoded or inapposite to contemporary currents of thought. My research explodes this conception by abandoning the presumption that Burckhardt was in some sense "out of touch" with modernity. By following and significantly expanding upon the ideas of historians such as Allan Megill, Lionel Gossman, Hayden White, Joseph Mali, John Hinde and Richard Sigurdson, among others, I am able to portray Burckhardt as conversely inaugurating a historiography laden with elements of insightful social criticism. Such criticisms are in fact bolstered by virtue of their counter-modern characteristic. Burckhardt reveals in this way a perspicacity that both anticipates Nietzsche's own critique of modernity and in large part moves well beyond him. Much of this analysis is devised through a genealogical approach to Burckhardt which places him squarely within a cohesive branch of post-Kantian thought that I have called heterodox post-Kantianism. My study revaluates Burckhardt through the alembic of a "discursive" post-Kantian turn which reinvests many of his outré ideas, including his radical appropriation of historical representation, his non-teleological historiography, his various pessimistic inclinations, and additionally, his non-empirical, "aesthetic" study of history, or "mythistory," with a newfound philosophical germaneness. While I survey the majority of Burckhardt's output in the course of my work, I invest a specific focus in his largely unappreciated Greek lectures (given in 1869 but only published in English in full at the end of the twentieth century). Burckhardt's "dark" portrayal of the Greeks serves to not only upset traditional conceptions of antiquity but also the manner in which self-conception is informed through historical inquiry. Burckhardt returns us then to an altogether repressed antiquity: to a hidden, yet internal "dream of a shadow." My analysis culminates with an attempt to reassess the place of Burckhardt's ideas for modernity and to correspondingly reexamine Nietzsche. In particular, I highlight the disparity between Nietzsche's and Burckhardt's reception of the "problem of power," including the latter's reluctance - which was attended by ominous and highly prescient predictions of future large-scale wars and the steady "massification" of western society - to accept Nietzsche's acclamation of a final "will to power." Burckhardt teaches us the value of history as an active counterforce to dominant modern reality-formations and in doing so, his work rehabilitates the relevance of history for a world which, as Burckhardt once noted, suffers today from a superfluity of present-mindedness.

"Greek and related pottery from Al Mina : a case study of production, consumption and distribution of Greek pottery in the Eastern Mediterranean from the 9th to the end of the 7th century BC". Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:bbc82d06-1717-4abb-bdaa-64d76a57caa9.

Resumen
The present thesis provides and examination of the Greek imports from Al Mina dating from the end of the 9th to the end of the 7th centuries BC. Al Mina, located on the Orontes river in the Hatay province of Turkey, was excavated by L. Woolley in 1936 and 1937. In particular the large quantities of Greek imports recovered from the sites triggered a debate about the site’s function and it’s foundation date. In order to overcome past deficiencies the present thesis provides a detailed record of the Greek pottery recovered from the site. The fragments are analysed stylistically and dated in order to establish a local chronology. Further, a detailed statistical study of the whole assemblage, which comprises about 4800 pieces, reveals evidence for local consumption patterns and further sheds light on the ports external contacts during the 8th and 7th centuries BC. The study also entails a contextual analysis of specific Near Eastern sites in order to set Al Mina in its regional context. Three questions are of major concern in this respect: is it possible to identify the users of Greek pottery in the East in terms of their socio-economic background? Further, is Greek pottery better understood as a commodity or as a gift? Finally, What role does Greek tableware play within the trade with other commodities? The study illustrates that pottery primarily circulated within the lower social classes. It also highlighted a diverse pattern in which high quality products are circulating besides “mass ware”. This can be understood as a diversification process that was initiated in order to reach a wider range of consumers.

Yazdani, Zenouz Khosrow.

This work proposes to examine the tragic vision of the Greeks, going back to its origins, i.e. Homer, in order to see how it is maintained, intensifies, and even finds itself abandoned (in Aeschyluses work or in Sophocleses one). Then we'II see how this vision was completely defeated by Plato's soteriological theology. The tragic vision is a religious vision, structured by the hierarchy of the Fates -Those of the gods, heroes, living men, and the inhabitants of Hades. Between the race of gods and that of humans there is an abyss: the gods are not mortal and humans are not immortal. The constant meddling of the gods in the affairs of humans most often results in suffering, unhappiness, and death. The world after death is a place where souls reside, that of shadows, unconscious of their own existence and the existence of others. At the heart of this vision, man is not fee and does not choose; he is not responsible for his acts and does not deserve what he undergoes. If one suppresses one of these four fundamental beliefs, or if one assists in a decision 111ade by a good, fair, or compassionate god, one cannot speak of tragic vision. Therefore, this work focuses essentially on the texts where it is expressed in all of its purity: Homer (The Iliad), Aeschylus (The Persians), and Sophocles (The Trachiniae, Ajax, Antigone, and Oedipus the King). Particular attention is given to the words that translate it. But a different vision opposes from the Odyssey and Oresteia, an anti-tragic vision which finds its form completed in the religion of Plato. The last part of this work strives to bring out the principal points. Plato assesses that there exists in man an element of divine and immortal nature, hence the substitution of a theology of deliverance and the assimilation to the divine with a theology of separation. The sage replaces the hero, it is no longer the glorious death that is a “beautiful death" and which must be chanted, it is that of Socrates, the servant of Apollo. According to this philosophico-religious thought, man is fee, he makes choices, and he is responsible, and thus deserves from this time forward the punishments and rewards that are in store for him. Furthermore, Platonic theology is fundamentally a theodicy: the gods can only be good, the origin of evil resides in the two souls of the World: the good and the bad. The message of tragic theology is the resignation to the mystery. Plato takes on as a divine mission moving the soul towards salvation, and with this anti-tragic, he creates a different link between the gods, the sages, men, destiny, the afterlife and the psyche

Mihaylov, Ivo. "Numerical schemes and Monte Carlo techniques for Greeks in stochastic volatility models". Thesis, Imperial College London, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/28909.

Texto completo
Resumen
The main objective of this thesis is to propose approximations to option sensitivities in stochastic volatility models. The first part explores sequential Monte Carlo techniques for approximating the latent state in a Hidden Markov Model. These techniques are applied to the computation of Greeks by adapting the likelihood ratio method. Convergence of the Greek estimates is proved and tracking of option prices is performed in a stochastic volatility model. The second part defines a class of approximate Greek weights and provides high-order approximations and justification for extrapolation techniques. Under certain regularity assumptions on the value function of the problem, Greek approximations are proved for a fully implementable Monte Carlo framework, using weak Taylor discretisation schemes. The variance and bias are studied for the Delta and Gamma, when using such discrete-time approximations. The final part of the thesis introduces a modified explicit Euler scheme for stochastic differential equations with non-Lipschitz continuous drift or diffusion; a strong rate of convergence is proved. The literature on discretisation techniques for stochastic differential equations has been motivational for the development of techniques preserving the explicitness of the algorithm. Stochastic differential equations in the mathematical finance literature, including the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross, the 3/2 and the Ait-Sahalia models can be discretised, with a strong rate of convergence proved, which is a requirement for multilevel Monte Carlo techniques.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership practices of students affiliated with fraternities and sororities. In addition, this study explored the differences in leadership practices among members of the four governing councils of the fraternities and sororities present at the host institution. Data were collected by administering the Student Leadership Practices Inventory (SLPI, Kouzes & Posner, 2006) to affiliated members of fraternities and sororities enrolled at a major research institution located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. This study was designed specifically to address the following research questions: 1. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of affiliated members of the Greek community? 2. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of the affiliated members of IFC chapters? 3. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of the affiliated members of NPC chapters? 4. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of the affiliated members of NPHC chapters? 5. What are the leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, of the affiliated members of UCFS chapters? 6. What are the differences that exist in leadership practices, as measured by the SLPI, among the four governing councils?

Resumen
This research examines the experiences, expectations and concerns of post-war Greek migrants in an interview and focus group setting. The central question of inquiry is whether Australia has been -the lucky country- for Greek migrants after approximately fifty years of living in Australia. Overall, of the total number of Greek migrants who participated in the research, 78% believe Australia is the lucky country, whereas 22% did not. Some of the overall reasons why Greeks believe Australia is not the lucky country include racism, qualifications were not initially recognised, and Greece is now perceived as being economically superior to Australia. Some of the main limitations of the present study include : the small number of subjects recruited, advertisement design, ambiguous definition of the lucky country, and the study was only concentrated in one geographical section of Sydney. Recommendations are included to assist future researchers alleviate some of the problem areas.

In order to form our hypothesis, it would be necessary to examine the scientific discourse on gender and its application to the greek case, and this is what we tried to do in our introduction. Our study was organized in five large parts. The first one approaches the formation of greek diaspora from the end of the 18th century to the revolutions of 1917 and the woman representation in pontic-greek historiography. The second one approaches the access of women in education, the ways of integration in the new soviet society. The preservation of the cultural roles leads us to develop a typology between “greek” women and “soviet” women. The third part focuses on the reformation or disappearance of the roles during political repressions that would have an impact on greek diaspora. Furthermore, we discussed on the women-victims of purges. Finally, the last part demonstrates that the exile constituted a rupture with the past, at least as it resulted from its protagonists’ oral testimonies. The women who talked about themselves and the men surveyed on gender issues give us an original image of the past, worthy of interest

Resumen
By the beginning of the sixteenth Venice was an established maritime empire having achieved, not only the methodical restraint of the Ottomans' expansive aspirations towards European lands, but also solid control over the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas and the trade routes to the Levant. Internally Venice was a metropolis bustling with merchants, craftsmen, travellers and visitors, amongst whom a great number uf established foreigners. Nearly eighty per cent of the city's population was made up of these labouring poor, who contributed significantly to the economic stability and prosperity ofthe Republic, as they provided the workforce for many of its industries. Venice was home to the world renowned Arsena/e, the biggest 'factory' in medieval and early modern period. It was there where the great Venetian galleys were built, armed, and launched into water, contributing to the Republic's economic prosperity, commercial and territorial expansion, as well as its defensive purposes. This thesis focuses on two of the most distinct working class communities in the city, the shipbuilding craftsmen, commonly known as Arsena/atti, and the seafaring Greek community. Both these groups, the former in charge of building these vessels, and the latter serving in them as sailors and captains, or similarly employed in the . shipbuilding industry, were two of the most prominent working class clusters in late Renaissance Venice. This study will attempt to look into the way of life of the maritime folk outside their workplace, in order to assess their financial and social standing - taking into consideration the places in which they lived, their households, their [mances, the social networks which they formed, and their religious and charitable activities - at a time of considerable demographic, economic, and social adjustments for the city. The examination of the two groups, established in the same neighbourhoods and united under the same occupational activities, will show that despite any linguistic, cultural, and religious diversity, their situation in life was very similar, and demonstrative of the circumstances of the Venetian working classes as a whole. Keeping in mind that early modern Venice's papa/ani have been considerably neglected by contemporary scholarship, the ultimate objective of this thesis is to initiate a basic study on the socio-economic life of the lower classes in one of the most populous and celebrated cities in medieval and early modern Europe.

Senkova, Michaela. "Gender, sex and status : the politics of divine healing among the Ancient Greeks". Thesis, University of Leicester, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/42507.

Resumen
This thesis addresses healing opportunities beyond ‘professional’ doctors or the big Asclepius cults in ancient Greece from the viewpoint of individuals as ‘consumers’ of healing. It builds upon the scholarship written' on Asclepius and examines the evidence for treatment in sanctuaries, not normally considered to be ‘healing cults’ despite clear clues to healing as part of their remit. It analyses archaeological material from these venues, literature and epigraphy to explore in depth cases of healing experience among the ancients. The main focus is on the individual worshipper, seeking answers to how people from different social strata manifested anxieties about their bodies through ritual practice and beyond. Were some cults believed to be specially helpful for particular ‘medical’ problems? Were healing rituals at some shrines ordered by gender, age or social status? The thesis concentrates on two major case studies. One looks at reproductive processes, both for men and for women, with different cultural ideologies about gender as the main driver. The second is driven by social status and considers how being a slave or a child, i.e. a dependent member of the society, could restrict or otherwise dictate one’s access to medical care. The thesis covers the archaic and classical periods (c. 800-400 BC) because at this time neither scientific medicine nor the healing sanctuaries of Asclepius were established as in later eras. Geographically, the thesis encompasses the known Greek world, including colonies in Asia Minor and the Mediterranean, to allow a better comparison of customs. The thesis demonstrates that healing in ancient Greece involved a wider range of activities than previously accepted and that this variety can tell us about how the Greeks viewed health and illness, reforming our attitudes towards ancient medicine, gender, economy and socio-religious history.

Resumen
The purpose of this PhD thesis is to understand the role of Crete in the economic exchange between Phoenicians and Greeks in the Aegean during the 1st millennium BC. An analysis of the materials found at the site of Kommos and its temple is conducted, as well as an examination of other Cretan sites such as Knossos, the Idaean Cave and Eleutherna. Moreover, the case of Kommos is compared to other Aegean cult structures of similar characteristics, such as the Sanctuary of Apollo in Eretria, the Heraion of Samos, the temple of Kition in Cyprus or the Temple of Vroulia in Southern Rhodes, among other temples. These appear to be not just religious spaces but also places of cultural and economic exchanges, integrated in networks of commercial districts connected by land and sea routes. This thesis aims to understand Phoenician presence and trade in Aegean temples, as well as how Crete shaped its role within the context of Mediterranean trade routes from the East to the West.

Michaelides, Georgios. "The international tax consequences arising on the death of South African individuals owning Greek or Portuguese property and Greeks or Portuguese owning South African property". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/11305.

Texto completo
Resumen
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 127-132).
South Africa levies two taxes on an individual in the event of death; namely estate duty and capital gains tax. Much debate exists on whether it is fair for South Africans to pay a "double tax" on the same assets on death. There is also a possibility that the deceased becomes liable for a third tax to foreign tax authorities when owning foreign property. This dissertation specifically examines the international tax issues that may arise on death for a South African with either Greek or Portuguese heritage. There are currently approximately 45,000 Greek passport holding South African residents and approximately 300,000 Portuguese passport holding South Africans. The question asked by many is: "are South Africans who have Greek or Portuguese heritage subject to taxes on death in excess of the South African "double tax" (capital gains tax and Estate Duty) as a result of any foreign taxes payable?" If this is the case, are there adequate relief measures available that can be used to address this inequity? The question is very topical at the moment on account of the current amendments in Greece with respect to the tax residency definition and the increased inheritance tax rates. It is also beneficial to include Portugal in the study as it is known to have less international double taxation issues. In effect if this is found to be true in this dissertation then Portugal can be used as a comparative benchmark, possible solutions can be derived from their policies and if the same problem arises between both South Africa and Greece and South Africa and Portugal it may be indicative of a much larger global tax issue that needs resolving.
