I sei romanzi della scrittrice di origine somala Igiaba Scego qui presi in considerazione sono contraddistinti, specialmente i primi, da un accentuato plurilinguismo, data la presenza di parole somale, arabe, spagnole, francesi e inglesi, mescolate a voci dialettali romane e napoletane. Utilizzando queste opere come corpus si propone un glossario dei 153 migratismi che si sono rintracciati. Per ognuno di essi si segnalano le eventuali varianti grafiche e si riportano le informazioni grammaticali, la lingua di provenienza e il campo semantico. I significati, quando possibile, sono ricavati da fonti interne al corpus (glossari proposti dalla stessa autrice) o esterne (studi critici o vocabolari, qualora la registrazione lessicografica sia già avvenuta), altrimenti sono desunte a partire dal contesto. Per ogni migratismo si dà poi l’elenco delle occorrenze nel corpus e un breve commento in cui si riportano i dati relativi alla diffusione della parola nei corpora di raffronto considerati, costituiti da archivi giornalistici o testi web.
Migrant words. Igiaba Scego’s migrantisms
The novels of the Somali-born writer Igiaba Scego are characterized by a marked multilingualism. Especially in the early novels, we find Somali, Arabic, Spanish, French and English words, mixed with Roman and Neapolitan dialect voices. Using these works as a corpus, a glossary of the 153 “migratismi” that have been traced is proposed. For each one, any graphic variants, the grammatical information, the language of origin and the semantic field are reported. A definition of meaning is given from internal sources (Igiaba’s glossaries) or external sources (e. g. vocabularies or neological repertoires). In the absence of sources, the definition is taken from the context. For each “migratismo”, the list of occurrences in the corpus is given and also a brief comment in which the data relating to the spread of the word in the comparison corpora are reported.

This essay considers the phenomenon of almanacs, encyclopedias, glossaries, lexicons, word books, vocabularies, companions, and (theoretical) toolboxes, which appears to be an outstanding feature of humanities today. By limiting her discussion to six specific examples of this genre, the author asks the following questions: Why is it that this method became so prolific? What are the objectives of almanacs, glossaries, and vocabularies? What do they do to thinking, writing, researching? What can they say about the moment we are in? And how do they contribute to defining this moment? Those questions orient discussions around humanities today toward the ethico-political practice of thinking otherwise.

How can we describe data when used as an art material? As the number of artists using data in their work increases, so too must our ability to describe the material in a way that is understood by both specialist and general audiences alike. Based on a review of existing vocabularies, glossaries and taxonomies of data, we propose our own concise taxonomy. To conclude, we propose the adoption of this concise taxonomy by artists, critics and curators, and suggest that ongoing refinement of the taxonomy takes place through crowdsourced knowledge sharing on the Web.

The origins of the lexicography of Spanish in America are found in various works such as glossaries, vocabularies, relationships, indexes, tables, etc., which have some common characteristics: they are simple and concise repertoires that are created because they are useful to understand the historical-geographical and literary texts, being usually appendices of a few dozens of words; in some cases they contain technical words or are included in dictionaries of another type. Twelve of these works are analyzed up to the beginning of the 17th century to show how lexicographical methods and techniques are outlined, which are the embryo of the later concept of dictionary of Americanisms.

Security assessment is crucial to the implementation and use of secure web portals. Literature reports studies about knowledge representation models for systems assessment and information security areas; however, there is a lack of conceptual formalization for the security assessment area. The security assessment ontology (SecAOnto) objective is to formalize knowledge on security assessment. It is based on ontologies, taxonomies, vocabularies, glossaries, and market guidelines. This paper presents an application of SecAOnto with the objective of identifying concepts in descriptions of security assessment items; the coverage of security characteristics is determined by using a coverage calculus algorithm. The application of SecAOnto and of the coverage calculus algorithms to the well-known standard ISO/IEC 27001 highlights its expressiveness. The proposal is useful for security experts and researchers in the context of security assessment, as well as to support web-based conceptual architectures.

The field of systemology does not yet have a standardised terminology; there are multiple glossaries and diverse perspectives even about the meanings of fundamental terms. This situation undermines researchers’ and practitioners’ ability to communicate clearly both within and outside their own specialist communities. Our perspective is that different vocabularies can in principle be reconciled by seeking more generalised definitions that reduce, in specialised contexts, to the nuanced meaning intended in those contexts. To this end, this paper lays the groundwork for a community effort to develop an ‘Ontology of Systemology’. In particular we argue that the standard methods for ontology development can be enhanced by drawing on systems thinking principles, and show via four examples how these can be applied for both domain-specific and upper ontologies. We then use this insight to derive a systemic and systematic framework for selecting and organising the terminology of systemology. The outcome of this paper is therefore twofold: We show the value in applying a systems perspective to ontology development in any discipline, and we provide a starting outline for an Ontology of Systemology. We suggest that both outcomes could help to make systems concepts more accessible to other lines of inquiry.

Abstract In 1961 the Government of India appointed a Standing Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology to formulate principles for evolution of terminology and preparation of standard textbooks in Hindi and other Indian Languages. The Commission published several glossaries of Engineering terminology, but none of mining engineering. From 1943 to 1954, Professor Raghu Vira, the noted Indian linguist, also published quite a few special dictionaries, and for the first time collected and compiled some mining terms in his Comprehensive English-Hindi Dictionary (1981). Though these indicate a first positive move toward collecting, processing and disseminating specialised vocabularies, their authors' principles and methods of developing terminologies vary. For want of a standard terminology of mining in Hindi and a lack of understanding of terminological concepts and their interrelationships, no textbook of mining could be written in or translated into Indian languages. It is also realised that translation of mining literature should be done by mining engineer translators who understand the systems of concepts, systems of terms and principles of translation. For a wider dissemination of scientific knowledge and technical skills, development of terminologies in Indian languages on internationally accepted sound terminological principles is necessary, even though presently subject specialists communicate in English. With the present government formulating programmes to use on a large scale the new communication technology in our school system, teaching of terminology within the framework of ESP syllabus at undergraduate level is also suggested.

Logistics is a new branch of economic that grows quickly not only in highly developed countries but also in Ukraine, despite the difficult economic situation. Our science feels changes in economic life, so we can notice the large number of works on logistics, attention to the study of this discipline in universities, the emergence of numerous books for the educational process and so on. But still this important area of the economy is not presented lexicographically and vocabularies and glossaries of logistics don’t meet modern requirements to lexicographical product for at least two reasons: first, they don’t reflect the amount of industry terminology; secondly, they have many disadvantages so linguists criticize them. Expert-author has formulate principles of composing own dictionary, we mean previous, external parameters of dictionary’s composition. These parameters consist of special vocabulary (descriptive subject). During finding terms of logistics we’ll match focus primarily on the monograph, dissertation research, scientific articles on logistics, as well as numerous textbooks containing vocabulary and logistics glossary of terms. The peculiarity of the group of terms is that it contains many lexemes borrowed from other terminological systems. Donors of logistic terminology are management, marketing, accounting, pricing, international relations, transport, science, technology, engineering, law, mathematics, military affairs, trade, customs, paperwork terminology. Terminology of logistics also contains general scientific terms. Many of the term are nominations ontologically inherent events to logistics. Terminographic analysis of the fragment which belongs to terminological field with a base term логістика objectifies system connections in this group of terms and will give the opportunity for further draw up the definition of such entries to these lexemes which fully correspond to their concepts.

A pesquisa terminológica temática é o ponto de partida para a criação de vocabulários controlados. Apresenta uma proposta de construção de um sistema de registro de termos com base em um banco de dados relacional para automatizar algumas das etapas da pesquisa terminológica temática. Para concretizar essa experiência foi necessária a elaboração de uma pesquisa terminológica temática que serviu de teste para a ferramenta proposta. Este estudo tem natureza exploratória, e o corpus da coleta foi composto por vinte duas referências, incluindo os dicionários e glossários usados na validação dos termos. A fundamentação teórica foi direcionada à compreensão dos conceitos capazes de explicar os pressupostos teóricos envolvidos tanto na pesquisa terminológica temática quanto na construção do sistema de registro de termos. Cento e onze termos foram extraídos do corpus da coleta durante a pesquisa terminológica temática, obtendo-se um índice de validação de 72% número considerado relevante no contexto geral. O sistema de registro de termos demonstrou-se eficiente apresentando soluções de recuperação dos termos cadastrados em várias opções de buscas e emissão de relatórios. O estudo enunciou, ainda, procedimento visando à continuidade do projeto com a criação de outros mecanismos para a manutenção da base de dados, disponibilizando-a, inclusive, para a comunidade em geral por meio da internet.AbstractThematic terminology searches are the starting point for the creation of controlled vocabularies. To introduce a construction method for the recording system terms with grounds in a relational database to automate some steps of the thematic terminology search. To materialize this experiment it was necessary to elaborate thematic terminology searches that served as a trial to the proposed tool. This study has an exploratory nature, and the collection corpus was composed of twenty-two references, including dictionaries and glossaries used for the terms validation. The theoretical grounding was directed towards the understanding of concepts able to explain the theoretical assumptions involved in both thematic terminology searches and also in the construction of recording system terms. A hundred and eleven terms were extracted from the collection corpus during the thematic terminology research obtaining a validation figure of around 72% a relevant number in the global context. The recording system terms were shown to be efficient at presenting recovered solutions of recorded terms in various search options and report emissions. The study even found a process that enhanced the continuity of the project with the creation of other mechanisms for maintaining the database, and making it available to the general public via the Internet.KeywordsControlled vocabulary; Registration System terms; thematic terminology Research.

This study aims to present the beginnings of Hungarian lexicography, with a special focus on certain works that are closely connected with Transylvania. The early glossaries, starting with the 13th century, are either marginal or interlinear. The only early source in which glossaries are intertextual, distinguished from the Latin text by underlining, is Sermones Dominicales, a compilation of sermons written in the first half of the 15th century. The vocabularies and nomenclatures under analysis were elaborated between the 14th century and the end of the 16th century, most of them being based on lists of Latin words grouped according to semantic fields. The only work that was elaborated based on the Hungarian lexis is the Nomenclature from Schlägl, a copy dating from around 1405 of a document written a few decades before. Among these vocabularies there are some that could be regarded as the first attempts to elaborate specialized dictionaries. Starting with the 16th century, several dictionaries in which the title-words are arranged alphabetically were identified. However, the early dictionaries are either unfinished or only partially preserved. The most representative dictionaries, mainly multilingual, were elaborated starting with the late 16th century. Our presentation ends with József Benkő’s botanical dictionaries, edited in 1783, which mark the beginnings of modern Hungarian lexicography.

English for Maritime Purposes comprises a variety of different registers. However, most of the dictionaries and glossaries are dedicated either to General Maritime English or Nautical English, while other aspects of the maritime industry are poorly covered by specialized lexicographic material, especially as regards formal dictionaries. Considering that the main classification onboard ship in terms of the crew and operational systems is related to the Deck and the Engineering Department, we sought to explore the similarities and differences between the technical lexes of the two areas, in order to see whether separated dictionaries and glossaries might be required, or a common maritime one would suffice. To test and measure the tackled technical vocabularies, we utilized contemporary corpus linguistics methods and software. The results show significant differences in the key vocabulary of the compared corpora. The findings clearly and once more call for special attention and focus when it comes to the interpretation of maritime lexis, as well as for establishing a clear distinction between English for Nautical and for Marine Engineering purposes. Herbarium specimens are central to botanical science and of rising importance thanks to increasing accessibility and broadened usability. Alongside the many new uses of specimen data, sit a range of traditional uses supporting the collection of morphological data and their application to taxonomy and systematics. (Henning et al. 2018). Technical workflows are needed to support the sustainable collection of this traditional information and maintain the high quality of the morphological data. Data exchange and re-usability requires the use of accepted controlled vocabularies (community approved) that are accessible (web-based ontologies and term vocabularies) and reliable (long-term availability/unique identifiers). The same applies to datasets that must be stored accessibly and sustainably by maintaining all data relationships that would facilitate convenient re-use. This project aims to construct a comprehensive workflow to optimise the delimitation and characterisation (“descriptions”) of taxa (see complementary talk by Plitzner et al.). It is implemented on the open-source software framework of the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy (http://www.cybertaxonomy.org, Ciardelli et al. 2009) extending the workflow for sample data processing developed in a preceding project (Kilian et al. 2015). The principal goals of this new software component are: specimen-level recording and storage of character data in structured character matrices generating taxon characterisations by aggregating the individual specimen-based datasets using and developing community-coordinated, ontology-based exemplar vocabularies persistently linking character datasets with source specimens for high visibility and re-usability specimen-level recording and storage of character data in structured character matrices generating taxon characterisations by aggregating the individual specimen-based datasets using and developing community-coordinated, ontology-based exemplar vocabularies persistently linking character datasets with source specimens for high visibility and re-usability The angiosperm order, Caryophyllales, provides an exemplar use case through cooperation with the Global Caryophyllales Initiative (Borsch et al. 2015). A basic set of morphological terms and vocabularies has been obtained from various online sources (ontologies, glossaries) and can be used, searched and expanded in the EDIT platform. The terms are categorised into: structures, properties and states. Different editors have been developed to combine structure and property terms to characters and assign a customised state vocabulary (categorical) or suitable values and units (numerical) to them. The workflow is built around a data set defining the taxonomic environment of individual use cases. A data set is specified by the characters and a taxonomic group, which can be filtered by area or rank. The dataset can be opened in a tabular representation (character matrix) to enter preselected state terms or values for the individual specimen. The matrix provides several features for basic comparison and analysis and allows the entry of alternative datasets (e.g. literature). Finally, the aggregation of data subsets to potential taxonomic units by adding up the values and summarising character states, allows the convenient test of taxonomic hypotheses. The term additivity is used here to describe this set of workflows and processes adding value to herbarium specimens and accumulating the specimen data for a taxon description.

Purpose This study aims to examine the effectiveness of bilingual learning strategies designed to support Chinese undergraduate business students facing significant learning challenges in an Australian university capstone curriculum delivered at their Chinese university. These challenges include the students’ difficulty understanding discipline-specific English terminology, using this terminology to discuss disciplinary concepts with their instructors and stress caused by an abnormally high study load. Design/methodology/approach In response to these challenges, the project team implemented a suite of bilingual strategies to reduce cognitive load and enhance learning, which included Chinese-English glossaries to build disciplinary-specific vocabularies; a bilingual teaching assistant to enable students to communicate in their language of choice; the use of WeChat to connect students to staff and to provide translanguaging opportunities; and bilateral managerial and academic support for strengthening the institutional cross-cultural relationship through staff exchange and language learning programs. A series of surveys were administered to measure the impact of these strategies on students’ learning, and WeChat logs were analysed to determine students’ linguistic preferences during discussions with staff and students. Findings The results of this project show strong support for each bilingual strategy, high academic performance amongst the student cohort, the positive contribution to learning and connection provided by social media technology, students’ language of choice preferences and chosen translanguaging styles and the important role of teaching staff in supporting international students’ intercultural learning and adaptation to a foreign university learning system. Originality/value This original evidence-based study helps to address the gap in bilingual education in Australian higher education demonstrating a successful strategy for dealing with language and discipline-specific challenges confronting EAL students.

For the translator, documentation becomes the main pillar of the transmission of specialised knowledge, as it provides the immediate information required by specialists and allows the most disparate fields of specialisation to be contemplated. In the case of the environment, the task of compiling specific glossaries is a difficult one, as its lack of definition and the different fields in which it operates make it a transdiscipline with a great social impact. For this reason, this article presents a review of the most important considerations regarding specialised translation and terminology, as it represents one of the most important bases of the translation process. Subsequently, given the lack of documentary resources in the Italian-Spanish combination in the environmental field, we present the RECICLO legal-environmental corpus through the textual analysis and corpus creation software Sketch Engine, based on the legislation that has regulated in recent years the Circular Economy Plan in favour of sustainable production through the efficient use of resources. The textual corpus we propose is aimed at getting to know the specialised vocabulary, both environmental and legal, in both languages, together with some translatological considerations. La documentación se convierte para el traductor en el pilar principal de la transmisión de conocimientos especializados, pues proporciona la información inmediata que exigen los especialistas y permite contemplar los campos de especialidad más disparatados. En el caso del medio ambiente, se muestra ardua la tarea de recoger glosarios específicos, pues su indefinición y los diferentes campos que revisten su acción lo convierten en una transdisciplina con un gran impacto social. Por ello, en este artículo inicialmente se presenta un repaso por las consideraciones más importantes acerca de la traducción especializada y la terminología al representar una de las bases más importantes del proceso traductor. Posteriormente, dada la falta de recursos documentales en la combinación italiano-español en el campo medioambiental, presentamos el corpus jurídico-ambiental RECICLO a través del software de análisis textual y de creación de corpus Sketch Engine, basado en la legislación que ha regulado en los últimos años el Plan de Economía Circular a favor de una producción sostenible mediante el uso eficiente de los recursos. El corpus textual que proponemos tiene por objetivo conocer el vocabulario especializado, tanto medioambiental como jurídico en ambos idiomas, junto con algunas consideraciones traductológicas.
