Texto completoThe explosion in the amount and variety of available geodetic, tsunami, and seismological observations offers an outstanding opportunity to develop new seismic source models. But these data are sensitive to different sources of uncertainty and provide heterogeneous information, which makes the solution of the inverse problem non-unique.In this thesis, we use a Bayesian sampling method to propose new slip models, which benefit from an objective weighting of the various datasets by combining observational and modelling errors. These models are less affected by data overfit and allow a realistic assessment of posterior uncertainties. We apply this method to the study of slip processes occurring in three different tectonic contexts: the Landers earthquake (1992, Mw=7.3), the Ecuador-Colombia subduction zone which hosted the Pedernales earthquake (2016, Mw=7.8), and the intraslab Tehuantepec earthquake (2017, Mw=8.2). Through these analyses, we demonstrate how the study of the seismic cycle can benefit from rigorous uncertainty estimates and Bayesian sampling

Texto completoStudies of the earthquake source are based on observations of seismic ground motions. They also depend on the quality and the density of measurements. In this present work we will present studies of the determination of focal mechanism of main aftershocks of the Les Saintes (MW 6.4, 2004) earthquake, and the determination of the coseismic slip of the L’Aquila (MW 6.3, 2009), the Miyagi-Oki (MW 7.2, 2005), ant the Sanriku-Oki (MW 7.3, 2011) earthquakes. These studies were based on two inversion methods. Different kinds of data were available (strong motion, broadband teleseismic, GPS and InSAR) depending on the earthquake studied. But the multiplicity of data is not sufficient to well describe rupture process. There are others difficulties as the data modeling of strong motion. Seismic velocity models are used to describe the characteristics of layers crossed by seismic waves. The quality of the modeling is depending on the pertinence of these seismic velocity models. The description of the rupture process is also depending on the non-uniqueness of the best solution given by global inversion methods. We propose two procedures in order to take into account these two classic issues. First, we developed a velocity model exploration procedure to obtain optimized 1D velocity models in order to improve the strong motion modeling of the L’Aquila earthquake. Then we developed a procedure to build an average rupture model from the combined results of several joint inversions, which was applied to the L’Aquila, the Miyagi-Oki, and the Sanriku-Oki earthquake. This thesis presents all these works and answers to the raised issues

Texto completoProbabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) relies on long-term earthquake forecasts, and ground-motion models. Up to now, geodetic data has been rather under-used in PSHA, although it provides unique and unprecedented information on the deformation rates of tectonic structures from local to regional scales. The aim of this PhD thesis is to improve earthquake recurrence models by quantitatively including the information derived from geodetic measurements, with an application to Ecuador, a country exposed both to shallow crustal earthquakes and megathrust subduction events. The second chapter presents the building of a probabilistic seismic hazard model for Ecuador, using historical and contemporary seismicity, recent knowledges about active tectonics, geodynamics, and geodesy. I contributed to this collective effort in two ways: 1) the building of earthquake catalogs from global seismic datasets; 2) the establishment of average slip rates on a set of simplified crustal faults, from GPS velocities. The hazard calculations led at the country scale indicate that uncertainties are largest for sites on the northern coast and along the faults in the Cordillera. The second chapter of this PhD focuses on the determination of the seismic potential of the Quito fault system. Quito city lies on the hanging wall of this ∼60-km-long reverse active fault, representing significant risks due to the high population density. We constrain the present-day strain accumulation associated with the fault system with GPS data and Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) analysis. 3-D spatially variable locking models show that a large part of the fault is presently experiencing shallow creep, hence reducing the energy available for future earthquakes, which has a significant impact for hazard calculation. In the third part of this PhD, we evaluate the ability of geodetic data to constrain earthquake recurrence models for the subduction zone in northern Ecuador. We quantify the annual rate of moment deficit accumulation at the interface using interseismic coupling models, and identify the uncertainties related to the conversion in terms of total seismic moment release. Based on a newly-developed earthquake catalog, we propose to establish recurrence models that match both the catalog-based seismicity rates and the geodetic moment budget. We set up a logic tree for exploring the uncertainties on the seismic rates and on the geodetic moment budget to be released in earthquakes. The exploration of the logic tree leads to a distribution of possible maximal magnitudes Mmax bounding the earthquake recurrence model; we extract only those models that lead to Mmax values compatible with the extent of the interface segment according to earthquake scaling laws. This new method allows 1) to identify which magnitude-frequency form is adapted for the Ecuadorian subduction; 2) to generate a distribution of moment-balanced recurrence models representative of uncertainties and propagate this uncertainty up to the uniform hazard spectra; and 3) to evaluate a range for the aseismic component of the slip on the interface. Considering the recent availability of massive quantity of geodetic data, this new approach could be used in other regions of the world to develop recurrence models consistent both with past seismicity and measured tectonic deformation

Texto completoSince 2003, the observation national service for the volcanology (SNOV) OI2 have been analyzing the ground surface displacements due to the volcanic eruptions at Piton de la Fournaise using the Interferometry by Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR). One of major results is the observation of Eastern seaward flank sliding during the 2007 eruption (around 1.4 m of horizontal displacements). More recent results demonstrated that this sliding continued between 2009 and 2014 with a decreasing of displacement rates. However, this signal is combined with the displacements caused by the lava flows, (thermo-mechanical compaction, substratum flexure under the lava-flow weight), and the signal deconvolution is complex. Consequently, the thesis objective is to characterize these displacements to remove the contribution of lava flows from our observations. Therefore, we should only observe the signals related to the internal volcanic processes. To characterize the lava flows, we have to estimate their displacements, their locations, their surface areas and thicknesses. From the InSAR coherence data, the developped algorithms enable us to extract the lava-flow outlines and estimate the surface area value of the lava flow with the associated uncertainties. They use an iterative and probabilistical approach. These algorithms are now used during effusive crisis at Piton de la Fournaise and are become a product within OI2. The vertical-displacements evolutions of the October 2010 lava flow spanning from mid-2011 to mid-2015 follow an exponential decreasing form with rates of 10’s milimetre per year. Over the same period, the horizontal displacements are negligeable. The results about the displacement rates for lava flows emplaced between 2014 and 2018 show that these displacements are caused by the thermo-mechanical compaction, the substratum flexure, the slope and the lava field structures (as lava tunnels). One year after the emplacement of the lava flow, the vertical displacement rates can reach some 10’s centimetre per year and these values are similar for the horizontal displacements. Modelling of vertical displacements has been made using the lava thicknesses as input parameter. The preliminar results show that the flank sliding amplitude must be reduced of around 80%, (10 mm.yr-1 ) and its location is different from that of the post-2007 period. Finally, the displacements outside lava flows allow a characterization of the substratum rheology. This last one appears variable. Our models estimate that the poroelasticity, with a rheological constrast, (about 100 m-deep), is a possibility to represent the rheology of susbtratum. Ultimately, the precise substratum characterization from the co-eruptive displacements will enable us to better constrain the geometry of magmatic intrusion

Texto completoIn this thesis, we considered the problem of the robustness of neural networks. That is, we have considered the case where the learning set and the deployment set are not independently and identically distributed from the same source. This hypothesis is called : the i.i.d hypothesis. Our main research axis has been data augmentation. Indeed, an extensive literature review and preliminary experiments showed us the regularization potential of data augmentation. Thus, as a first step, we sought to use data augmentation to make neural networks more robust to various synthetic and natural dataset shifts. A dataset shift being simply a violation of the i.i.d assumption. However, the results of this approach have been mixed. Indeed, we observed that in some cases the augmented data could lead to performance jumps on the deployment set. But this phenomenon did not occur every time. In some cases, the augmented data could even reduce performance on the deployment set. In our conclusion, we offer a granular explanation for this phenomenon. Better use of data augmentation toward neural network robustness is to generate stress tests to observe a model behavior when various shift occurs. Then, to use that information to estimate the error on the deployment set of interest even without labels, we call this deployment error estimation. Furthermore, we show that the use of independent data augmentation can improve deployment error estimation. We believe that this use of data augmentation will allow us to better quantify the reliability of neural networks when deployed on new unknown datasets

Texto completoThis thesis is part of the study of fuel elements of pressurized water reactors and, more specifically, focus on the understanding and modelling of the viscoplastic behavior of uranium dioxide (UO$_2$) at polycrystalline scale. During the incidental operation of the reactor, the fuel undergoes a strong increase of temperature and thermal gradient between the center and the periphery of the pellet leading to viscoplastic strains due to dislocation movement mechanisms. First, a crystal plasticity model was developed in order to describe the viscoplastic anisotropy of the material considering the temperature and the loading rate. Finite element (FE) simulations on single crystals enabled to highlight that the three slip modes generally observed in UO$_2$ are crucial to describe the anisotropic behavior of the material. Secondly, coefficients of the interaction matrix have been identified specifically for UO$_2$ in order to improve the polycrystal modelling. Indeed, by calculating geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs), which are responsible of the great increase of the stored dislocation density in polycrystals, the interactions between dislocations enable to simulate de grain size sensitivity and hardening of the fuel pellet. Finally, the model adapted for polycrystals, have been validated by comparing FE simulations with pellet compression tests and by comparing the simulated intra-granular behavior with EBSD measurements. Thanks to the latter comparison, it is possible to indirectly compare the strain heterogeneities in the grains

Texto completoConsideration of natural hazards is not new. Management of these risks is developed little by little. The subject of research has been made in the context of a project W. A. S. S. S. (Wide Area Slope Stability Server). This server is support to a database, regrouping cases of landslides and relative information. This database is interest because the collection of data will serve to studies of risks. In its second part, this work of research approaches some stability methods of slopes, and proposes the extension of the method of perturbations in 3D, that we have applied on two cases: case theoretical of Ugaï (1988), and a real case, the landslide of Salle Beaumont (Isere), that in 1994 bad made four victims. This landslide occurred on a zone declared without apparent risk
