Sonnenwald, Margreta. "The term ‘marble’ in eighteenth-century encyclopaedic literature: from colourful and exclusive to grainy and popular". Sculpture Journal 30, n.º 2 (1 de noviembre de 2021): 203–13. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/sj.2021.30.2.8.

Resumen
This article reports on findings concerning the use and understanding of marble in the eighteenth century, as uncovered by a team of geologists and conservators at the Department of Engineering Technology at the Technical University of Munich. While researching a group of marble objects in Bayreuth in order to devise suitable conservation methods, it became apparent that the eighteenth-century understanding of ‘marble’ was different to how we define the stone today. This earlier definition of marble was based on colour, pattern and the ability to shine when polished. However, by the end of the eighteenth century, there was a shift to a focus on the different grain sizes of the stones, while the previously defining quality of colour became less important. Such developments advanced towards the recognition of limestone and marble as two different types, enabling the distinction between sedimentary limestone and its metamorphic product marble to be drawn in the first half of the nineteenth century. At the same time, the exploration of local sources caused the exclusivity of marble to dwindle. Once a building and decorative material for the elite, it now became more widely available. Marble was still the material of sovereigns - proudly presented as locally found - but it simultaneously became accessible to a wider market for household utensils or collectors’ items. This is demonstrated through the exploration of a range of German sources, including encyclopaedias and lexicons with their inherent aim of accumulating the universal knowledge of their time, a ‘marble’ compendium, and a description of the prison and workhouse in St Georgen in Bayreuth, which had marble works on its premises.

George Ball, longtime Professor of Entomology at the University of Alberta, has retired. This does not mean that his contributions to entomology will cease; in fact, this academic earthquake will surely unleash a new tidal wave of excellent systematic work about ground-beetles. Nevertheless, many of George's friends, colleagues, and former students gathered in Edmonton on 6 November 1992 to participate in an entomological symposium entitled “Ball's Circle: a merry go 'round of systematics” to mark this occasion and to celebrate George's outstanding record of achievement as an entomologist and university teacher. We begin the proceedings with some rather personal reflections about George.

Resumen
The article reveals the archetypal image of a simpleton. One of its variations is the type of the deceived husband. He is most fully represented in Molière’s comedy Georges Dandin, or the Confounded Husband . The expression from the comedy “Tu l’as voulu, George Dandin, Tu l’as voulu” (“You yourself wanted it, Georges Dandin, you yourself wanted it”) has become a phraseological unit. The Russified image of Molière’s confounded husband is paired and presupposes the presence of a spouse. In Chekhov’s dictionary, the concepts of “wife” and “spouse” are not identical. The most adequate representation of the confounded husband is presented in the writer’s vaudevilles. In large plays, an ambivalent combination of dramatic intonation with a comic beginning is found.

Resumen
The present paper is an attempt to answer Bernard Williams' classical dilemma of George the chemist, who is asked by a senior colleague to partake in a CBW research program. Both George and the colleague oppose the research, and George is advised not to publicize his attitude for George to get the job instead of someone more eager. On the one hand, George does not want to be involved in the research, yet on the other hand, he does not want to allow it to be completed faster. The author views George's potential actions as sabotage and argues that since the existing ethical codes demand putting safety ahead of the pressures of the employers, sabotage should not be out of the question. CBW endangers entire communities, and thus secretly sabotaging its research amounts to disaster prevention and should be considered a professional duty by consequentialists and deontologists alike, even if it may involve deception and furthermore deception about deception.

Abies georgei var. smithii (Abies George I varsmithorr. II (Viguie et Gaussen) Cheng et l.) belongs to Abies of Pinaceae, which is distributed in the southeast of Tibet, southwest of Sichuan and northwest of Yunnan. In this study, Abies georgei var. smithii in Sejila Mountain of southeastern Tibet was studied, the contents of Malondialdehyde (MDA), proline (pro), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), soluble sugar and chlorophyll as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the leaves, twigs, tree stems and roots of Abies georgei var. smithii were measured at different altitudes in the growing and non-growing seasons, single factor analysis of variance and multiple comparison were used to process the data. The results showed that the contents of Malondialdehyde (MDA), proline (pro) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the roots of Abies georgei var. smithii were significantly higher than those of other tissues in both growing and non-growing seasons, the content of chlorophyll in the leaves increased at first and then decreased with the elevation gradient, on the contrary, the ratio of chlorophyll a/b (CHLA/CHLB) increased with the elevation gradient. The activities of Peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were the lowest. When the altitude was more than 4300m, the activities of POD and SOD decreased. The results showed that the physiological resistance of Abies georgei var. smithii decreased when the elevation was over 3900m, which was not beneficial to the growth and development of Abies georgei var. smithii, therefore, the distribution of Abies georgei var. smithii along the higher elevation gradient was limited by the unfavorable environmental factors at high altitude.

On Martha's Vineyard in the late seventeenth Century, a Native American called George suffered from being “Tormented” and “impotent” and sought out a renowned “Powaw,” or shaman, for help. According to Matthew Mayhew, who published the story in 1697, the shaman diagnosed George's troubles as effects of witchcraft and proceeded to “dance around a great fire” with George and other sick Natives “lying by.” Other Natives broke up the dance, claiming that the Powaw himself had “bewitched” the sick, and “threatened to burn him unless he cured the sick man.” Fortunately for the shaman, when he “felt the heat of the fire, the sick immediately recovered.”

Resumen
This paper explores the influence of Lacanian jouissance on the films of K. G. George, a pivotal figure in shaping the narrative and stylistic ofMalayalam cinema between 1974 and 1998, who passed away on 24th of September 2023. George's career as a filmmaker paralleled important changes in society and politics, and his films explored the intricacies of the human mind in the face of shifting social scenarios. The examination of Lacanian jouissance in K. G. George's films shed light on the complex interactions that shape the psychological landscapes of the characters via lack, desire, and social constraints. This is made possible through the qualitative content analysis of a purposively sampled set of K. G. George movies that include Yavanika (1982), Adaminte Variyellu (1983), Irakal (1985),Mattoral (1988), and Ee Kanni Koodi (1990). These films are representations that allow the spectators to confront their own unconscious desires and the constraints placed on them by social conventions such as gender norms. The study of these films also encourages a contemplative examination of the human condition by engaging with complexities of desire, societal expectations and shifting human relationships. Applying Lacanian Jouissance to the study of K. G. George movies focus on individual psychology with broader social commentaries, offering a nuanced perspective on the interplay between human consciousness and societal structures. As a director hailed for using psychology and psychoanalytic concepts in his movies, it is important to theoretically place observed influence of Lacanian Jouissance on his movies.

Resumen
This analysis of the Anglo-French dispute over manpower resources in 1918, in the context of Germany's five Spring offensives on the Western Front, reveals the lack of effective and agreed policies. It examines from an alliance perspective a problem that has not before been so treated in print. After a brief account of the background to the crisis, the article discusses, first, the arguments presented in a French war ministry report on British manpower, and, second, the effects of the problems of transporting and deploying American troops. It goes on to examine some of the questions that were raised in consequence: industrial versus military mobilization; troop densities for a given length of line; and categories of fitness. Both British and French prime ministers spent much time and emotional energy in arguing about these matters. This was a dispute that was as bitter as it was pointless, because ultimately insoluble. Yet the efficient deployment of manpower resources was crucial to victory, and the dispute was dangerous for the maintenance of the coalition.

Resumen
For nearly forty years George of Laodicea (c. 290–359) played a significant role in the fourth-century Trinitarian controversy. Yet among scholars of the period his contribution has been understudied, underappreciated and misunderstood. This article aims to reconstruct George's career in a way that eliminates earlier distortions, corrects certain oft-repeated mistakes and includes frequently omitted evidence. It argues that George was one of the principal leaders of the Eusebian alliance in its last two decades. It also suggests that his leadership role in the Homoiousian alliance was more significant than is usually thought: he was the catalyst for its formation and emerged as its champion in the aftermath of the failed leadership of Basil of Ancyra.

Resumen
The role and place of Georges Guerwich in the foundation of a sociological school at the University of Dnipro. It was found out that at the beginning of his academic career, Georges Guerwich, a coryphae of the Paris School of Sociology, worked for some time at the University of Katerynoslav, thus having laid, at least implicitly, the seeds of sociological education in the Pridneprovsky region. The course of events preceding the opening of the classical university in Katerynoslav is described. It is also noted that when opening the Faculty of Law of the named above, special attention was paid to ensuring the sociological component of the training of future lawyers. Relying on the experience of Western European and especially American universities, it was proposed at the opening of the Faculty of Law in Katerynoslav to establish a department of sociology. For this mission to the University of Katerynoslav, a talented graduate of the Petrograd University George George Gurvich was invited, who is a pupil of intellectual leaders of the Russian law school L. Petrazhitsky, P. Novgorodtsev, F. Taranovsky. While working at the Department of Encyclopedia, History of Philosophy of Law, he laid the foundations of sociological culture at this institution of higher education. It is proved that his general sociological views have a phenomenological basis. G. Gurvich determined that the object of sociology is sui generis phenomena, which are neither reduced to physical nor chemical, biological or psychological phenomena, and the explanation of their main attributes is the main task of sociology. In this case, the main attributes of social phenomena may be in agreement or in conflict. Characterized by the sociological views of Georges Gurvich, it was noted that his sociology is distinguished by the principal attention to theoretical and methodological issues, the phenomenological angle of considering social problems, the elucidation of the historical and genetic foundations of social processes. It was emphasized that it is precisely this focus of the problem’s consideration that is inherent in a sociological school formed at the Dnipro University. Georges Guerwich’s intellectual heritage, academic and scientific-organizational activities are of great importance for the development of world sociology. He co-operated with P. Sorokin, N. Timashev, F. Stepun, P. Struve, and maintained friendly relations with L. Brunswick, L. Lévy-Bruhl, M. Mouss, M. Halbwachs, T. Parsons, R. Merton and others luminaries of modern sociological science. His lectures were attended by J.-P. Sartre and J. Lacan.

Resumen
In a separatist congregation in London in 1594 a storm was brewing. The church's pastor, Francis Johnson, imprisoned for his noncon-formist activities, had recently married, and Francis's younger brother George, also incarcerated, was deeply troubled about his new sister-in-law Thomasine. George Johnson feared Francis was “blinded, bewitched, and besotted with the slie [sly] heights of the subtile proud woman,” and he considered it his duty as a good Christian and concerned brother to help “reforme” the situation. George's central grievance against Thomasine, a young widow before her marriage to Francis, was her excessive pride—she was “much noted” for it, he observed, which “became not a Pastor's wife, specially he being under persecution: in Prison: and often looking for death.” For George, as for other nonconforming Protestants who believed that one's outward behavior revealed one's inward moral state, his sister-in-law's pride was so offensive because it was so publicly and extravagantly displayed upon her body, in velvet, lace, whalebone, and gold. George wanted to “shew” Thomasine “that proud apparel and fashions of worldly dames were not decent in a Pastor[']s wife: that the creatures [material things], though lawful to be used, yet [are] not to be abused.”

Resumen
“Drink” explores a quiet, gentle, and unassertive Tom Foster who goes unnoticed by the villagers. Tom is unable to forget the enticing expression and alluring scent he encountered when entering the room of a prostitute in his neighborhood. This experience distorts his perception of women and sexuality. Moreover, it leads him to associate personal, emotional, and intimate relationships with pain and being hurt when attempting to connect with others. Consequently, he becomes grotesque, avoiding active relationships and understanding the world only within his own thoughts. After relocating to Winesburg, Tom romanticizes his relationship with Helen White only in his thought. Despite dreaming of love with Helen in his fantasies, nothing happened, and what he wants to release through alcohol is his desire for an emotional and intimate relationship with Helen. Despite the pain, he is determined to engage in acts of love. Tom’s story can be viewed as his initial attempt to escape his way of life, but the adventure ends abruptly overnight. Ultimately, the question remains about the significance of Tom's story in relation to George’s growth. As the short stories in Winesburg, Ohio progress, George matures through encounters with various grotesques, expanding his perception of the world and humanity. While other episodes show a fixed pattern of grotesques visiting George at night, in “Drink,” George actively seeks out and engages with the intoxicated Tom, revealing George's proactive and mature side. Therefore, “Drink” becomes an important stage in George's growth as it marks his increasing interest and observation of the people around him, a crucial step toward becoming the writer he aspires to be.

In January 1678 John Knight, the Serjeant Surgeon of Charles II, sent to Samuel Pepys a ‘Discourse containing the History of the Cross of St. George, and its becoming the Sole Distinction = Flag, Badge or Cognizance of England, by Sea and Land’. Knight argued that St George's cross should become the dominant feature in English flags and supported his argument with a history of the cross.A manuscript copy of this discourse, with Knight's original drawings, survives in the Pepys Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge, and is published here. A brief biography of Knight is presented and an account of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century controversies about St George. The latter was an issue which caused acrimony between Royalists and Puritans. An Appendix reconstructs Knight's library, principally consisting of books concerning heraldry, topography and history.

In a recent article which does much to enhance understanding of an important but neglected work, David M. Olster has drawn attention to the historical and political background against which George of Pisidia, panegyrist of the Emperor Heraclius (AD 610–641), composed his major surviving poem, the Hexaemeron. Olster rightly casts doubt on the validity of the distinct categories of ‘panegyrical’ and ‘theological’ into which George's poetry has traditionally been classified, and illuminates the significance of the Creation theme as a metaphor for political renewal at a time when the Byzantines achieved great victories against Persia after a prolonged period of disaster in the first decades of the seventh century. These observations lead him to the view that all of George's poetry should be interpreted in political and panegyrical rather than theological or religious terms.

Resumen
September 1945 saw comic-strip star “Orphan Annie” engaged in a debate over popular media with “Professor Pollyanna.” The Professor and his spouse, known to Annie as “Uncle George” and “Aunt Sonja,” were one of many adult couples that took the eleven-year-old orphan into their home throughout the history of the comic strip Little Orphan Annie. Temporary guardians like Uncle George and Aunt Sonja moved in and out of the strip on a regular basis, functioning as a foil for young Annie, the spokeschild of her creator Harold Gray, to express her opinions about the world. In this episode, Annie was puzzled by Uncle George's distaste for the tabloid-style newspaper fare she herself devotedly consumed daily. He “never reads th' funnies — or anything 'bout crime or sin or war horrors!” Annie observes incredulously. Professor Pollyanna, it seemed, only read editorials and, in Annie's mocking terms, “sweetness and light stories.” Annie later mulls over the matter with a sympathetic Aunt Sonja in an attempt to understand his views further. But Aunt Sonja could muster only the lamest of analyses: “Oh, probably George lives in a sort of dream world … but he's happy” (see Figure 1).

Resumen
This article argues that George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss (1860) aligns natural catastrophe with the image of the disastrous female body in order to challenge contemporary geological readings of nature as a balanced, self-regulating domain. Both incorporating and revising the work of Charles Lyell, Oliver Goldsmith, and Georges Cuvier, Eliot emphasises the interconnectedness of human and planetary processes, feminises environmental catastrophe, and blends human and ecological history. She does so in order to write the human presence back into geological histories that tended to evacuate the human, and to invite readers to account for the effects their lifestyles and industries have upon the supposedly balanced and orderly processes of nature.

George Pearson, the son of an apothecary, studied medicine at Edinburgh under Joseph Black. He entered medical practice at Doncaster in 1777, but moved to London and became a physician at St George's Hospital in 1787. He lectured on chemistry and was the first English chemist to adopt the oxygen theory; he was elected FRS in 1791. One of the first to advocate Jenner's cowpox vaccination, he thought himself superior to Jenner in promoting it. He expected recognition and when this was given exclusively to Jenner, became embittered. His reputation was damaged and he has largely been forgotten.

Resumen
Abstract Background EPEC is a known cause of diarrhea, predominately in children, which has not been identified with conventional stool culture in most medical centers. MPCR testing assesses stool samples in which DNA targets for 20 or more pathogens are tested with rapid turnaround. This method has become the standard for diagnostic testing in many clinical laboratories. MPCR testing has identified EPEC as among the most frequent pathogens in published studies. Methods We have completed a retrospective review of medical records of patients who tested positive for EPEC in our medical center. Results EPEC was found in 56 of 332 MPCR samples analyzed between February 1, 2016 and July 31, 2016. EPEC was the only pathogen in 25 while co-infecting pathogens were found in 31. Co-infections included other diarrhea-causing E. coli (ETEC, EAEC and EIEC but none with STEC) in 17, C. difficile in 7, viruses (astrovirus 3, sapovirus 2, norovirus 2, rotavirus 2), Campylobacter 3, Giardia 2, Salmonella 2, Pleisiomonas 1 and Yersinia 1. Patients ages ranged from <1 to 100 with 37 over age 19. Half were female. 7/46 had received antibiotic prior to sample collection. 10 reported recent travel. 51/52 presented to the emergency department, urgent care centers or ambulatory clinics. Symptoms included fever in 15/54, nausea 16/54, vomiting 14/54 and abdominal pain in 17/56. Diarrhea was described as watery in 23/32 and bloody in only 3. Antibiotic treatment was prescribed for 6/24 with EPEC only and for 22/31 with coinfection. A follow-up encounter was documented for 24 patients with EPEC only: 13 resolved, 3 remained ill and 8 could not be assessed. Conclusion EPEC is frequently found in stools from persons with diarrhea when MPCR is employed. Symptoms cannot be attributed to EPEC alone when other pathogens are found, but our analysis does suggest that EPEC is a common cause of diarrheal illness in adults as well as children. Prospective studies on natural history and treatment are necessary. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

Resumen
George Holland's superb monograph on the fleas of Canada, Alaska and Greenland was published as Memoir of the Entomological Society of Canada No. 130 on 11 March 1985 (not in 1984 as indicated on the spine of the monograph). This work was immediately adopted by those of us working with the northern North American flea fauna. Because of George's lengthy illness, he was unable to correct galley proofs to his usual high standards. Unfortunately, George Holland passed away later in 1985, before he was able to address corrections to the monograph. What follows is a compilation of the errors that we have detected since the monograph was published. We have made no attempt to reinterpret Holland's taxonomic or biogeographical concepts, nor in any way change the meaning of the text. We have included additional references that pertain to the relevant geographic areas, either where Holland did not refer to them in the text, or which appeared subsequent to completion of the manuscript, up to and including year of publication (1985). The authors thank Agriculture Canada for financial support in the publication of this manuscript.

Resumen
Joseph Boulogne, the Chevalier de St George is one of the interesting and fascinating characters of the 18th century France. He was one of the first black musicians of his time. He was a master of fencing, a classical music composer, personal music teacher to Marie Antoinette, an active abolitionist and a colonel to the Legion of Saint Georges, the first black regiment formed in France and Europe. The aim of this research to introduce this mostly forgotten and underestimated violinist and composer to the Turkish reader. Among the research done the course of this work, very little information was found in Turkish about this black composer. To be precise a badly translated version of what is found on Wikipedia. It is hoped that this black composer will be introduced to the Turkish music scene and his works will be of interest to the readers.

Resumen
This survey of intellectual endeavor in medieval Slavia orthodoxa proposes a different way to think through the problem of the “intellectual silence of Old Rus′,” first set forth by Georges Florovsky and explored by George Fedotov, Francis Thomson, Simon Franklin, and now Donald Ostrowski. It examines the resources and opportunities for secondary schooling and their apparent outcomes in Kyivan Rus′ from the eleventh through the thirteenth century, among South Slavs on Mount Athos in the later fourteenth century, and at the Kirillo-Belozerskii (Kirillov) Monastery in northern Russia in the later fifteenth century. It concludes that intellectual endeavor is not necessarily bound to an international language of scholarship (e.g., Greek), one the one hand, or to a particular religious mentalité (e.g., that of the Western Church), on the other. Rather, it is cultivated by “schematizing” (educational) institutions oriented upon academic (heuristic) interpretive strategies and—most importantly—supported by textbooks and teachers.

Resumen
Abstract Prior research showed a relationship between reading skills and pitch perception, however the exact nature remained unclear. By means of reading tests and a pitch perception test, we examined the relation between reading abilities and local and global pitch perception for 92 native Dutch children (mean age = 9.47) and 61 non-native Dutch children (mean age = 9.61). Additionally, for the latter group we examined the role of working memory. In line with prior research with poor readers in a language with a rather transparent orthography by Ziegler, Pech-Georgel, George and Foxton (2012), a relationship is found between reading skills and the ability to detect local changes in pitch, rather than global changes in the melody. Additionally, at least for beginning readers of Dutch as a second language, there is a strong effect of working memory on the relation between reading skills and pitch perception.

Resumen
In June 1914 David Lloyd George, Liberal Chancellor of the Exchequer, capitulated to opposition from within his own party and withdrew from the Budget for 1914–15 his proposals to revise the system of Exchequer grants to local authorities and to establish land value rating. Withdrawal was a considerable political humiliation for Lloyd George. “His stock stands low in the party,” commented his friend, Lord Riddell, in his diary. “The Budget has been a fiasco.” What went wrong with the 1914 Budget is the concern of this article.Lloyd George's 1914 Budget incorporated two distinct strategies. The first comprised a fiscal strategy designed to provide in a single “taxing” Budget for the needs of both the Navy and the reorganization of local government finance and taxation. The second constituted part of a wider political strategy intended to furnish a reform program that would enable the Liberals to make a powerful progressive appeal at the next general election, due by the end of 1915. The first was supposed to serve the second, but in the event had the opposite result. It prompted Lloyd George to abandon his original plan of building up to a major reform Budget in 1915 and to proceed instead to include in the 1914 Budget “provisional” grants to local authorities before he had prepared the groundwork, administratively, legislatively or politically, for a new system of grants and rating. At all levels, the enterprise was premature, and simply presented a group of discontented wealthy Liberals in the Commons with the opportunity to stage an effective protest against the direction of Liberal finance.

Resumen
Between the Civil War and the Industrial Revolution, four generations of the Stansfield family lived in Halifax—an upland parish in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Although its politics were calm, the century and a half between England's two great “revolutions” was not devoid of change in other respects. Significant social, economic, and cultural developments during this period laid the foundations for the ferment of the Industrial Revolution. The history of the Stansfield family is an excellent illustration of these changes, for there was a world of difference between the great-grandfather, Josias Stansfield, who was in his prime at the Restoration, and his great-grandsons, George and David Stansfield, who were in their primes a century later. For his part, Josias was recognizably a man of the middling sort. A yeoman engaged in farming and small-scale textile production, his economic activities and his social standing place him in the ranks of families who fell between the few gentlemen who lived in the area and the mass of simple artisans and laborers who had to struggle just to survive. Josias's great-grandsons, George and David Stansfield lived in a different world. By the mid-eighteenth century, Halifax's textile industry was increasingly dominated by large-scale production of which George's large putting-out concern and David's substantial export business were typical. George and David's social position was also quite different. No longer merely comfortable, these two second cousins were among the wealthiest residents of their respective townships, and they had assumed an appropriately significant share of the political and social leadership in the parish.

Resumen
There is one interesting piece of testimony relating to the death of Bob Smillie that Tom Buchanan does not discuss in his article on this sad affair (‘The death of Bob Smillie, the Spanish Civil War, and the eclipse of the Independent Labour party’ Historical Journal, 40 (June 1997)). The Orwell Archive at University College, London, contains a statement dated 30 January 1930 that Georges Kopp sent to Fenner Brockway and John McNair of the ILP with a copy to his friend and comrade, George Orwell. In this document, Kopp makes clear his belief that Bob Smillie was kicked to death by his Communist interrogators in an effort to get him to sign statements prejudicial to the POUM and the ILP. As Buchanan points out, Kopp was Smillie's unit commander and was himself arrested during the repression of the POUM and only released in December 1938. His account of events deserves consideration.

Since the end of World War I, the people of the Middle East have lived – from Turkey to Iraq – in a world created by Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George, and Georges Clemenceau. From the outset, the victorious powers of the War, especially Wilson, paid lip service to the principle of self-determination in addressing various nationalities, but they soon realized this great principle can be a double-edged sword whose use could cost them dearly – in casualties as well as capital. Western and regional powers resolved this dilemma by installing a system of states in the Middle East, in the name of self-determination, which was in fact appallingly unfair and feeble. Implementation of this policy in the face of multi-ethnic milieus and complexities, where the dominant group constituted no more than 50 percent of the population, had disastrous consequences and fractured the social landscape of the region into distinct camps of winners and losers.
