Resumen
Big-eyed bugs Geocoris spp. (Lygaeidae, Hemiptera) are small insects that is found in many parts of the world. They are beneficial because they eat a multitude of insect pests in agriculture. Big-eyed bugs Geocoris spp. are insects that receive research attention in Florida and elsewhere because of the benefits that this species give to plants (Mead, 2001). Big-eyed bugs reproduce many generations in a year on weeds, perennial crops, bushes. In spring the female big-eyed bugs start laying eggs on the bud, the leaves of the host plant. Understanding the biology and the role of predator Geocoris spp. in ecosystem will provide an alternative method in sustainable agriculture development. In this short review, we discuss some convenient diets for the application of mass rearing Geocoris spp.

Resumen
The southern chinch bug, Blissus insularis Barber, is the most important insect pest of St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze. Fifteen chinch bug infestations in St. Augustinegrass lawns in Florida were sampled by vacuuming. Additional vacuum samples were taken in 15 randomly selected St. Augustinegrass lawns. The big-eyed bug, Geocoris uliginosus Say, was the most frequent and abundant big-eyed bug found at the infestations. Data showed that big-eyed bugs (Geocoris spp.) were highly aggregated at chinch bug infestations. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between numbers of chinch bugs and big-eyed bugs at chinch bug infestations showing that big-eyed bugs had a numerical predator response to increasing chinch bug populations.

Roundup Ready® soybeans, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, in narrow-row planting systems were investigated in 1998 in Mississippi to evaluate the effects of the transgenic crop and glyphosate herbicide on pest and beneficial insects. Insects found in sufficient numbers for meaningful analysis included adult bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster); adult three-cornered alfalfa hopper, Spissistilus festinus (Say); adult big-eyed bug, Geocoris punctipes (Say), and; larvae of green cloverworm, Plathypena scabra (F.), and velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner). Populations of C. trifurcata, S. festinus, P. scabra and A. gemmatalis were not reduced in genetically altered Roundup Ready soybean, or by recommended (by label) or delayed applications of glyphosate. Numbers of G. punctipes also were not reduced in Roundup Ready soybean, but were reduced by recommended applications of glyphosate during weeks three and four following the second recommended herbicide application. Geocoris punctipes densities also were reduced at 1 and 2 wks after the first glyphosate application in plots in which the second application of glyphosate was delayed. Numbers of G. punctipes may have been indirectly reduced by glyphosate within sample weeks two and three because of variations in weed densities after treatment with the herbicide.

Geocoris punctipes (Say) was fed artificial diet containing 0, 70, 350 or 700 ppm Rb from 4th-instar nymphal stage to adult stage. Adult weights and duration of nymphal stadia were not affected by Rb treatment. Adult survival was reduced at 350 ppm but was not significantly lower at 700 ppm than at 0 or 70 ppm Rb. Fifth-instar nymphs that were fed 350 ppm and kept under laboratory conditions (i.e., ad libitum food and water, 27°C, 40% RH) retained enough Rb for reliable detection 1 week after return to unlabeled diet.

Resumen
Survival of Geocoris punctipes (Say) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) after ingestion of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), tissues infected with Vairimorpha sp. (Microspora: Microsporida) was studied in the laboratory. In six tests involving 532 adult G. punctipes, survival averaged 38.1 days when infected larvae were consumed and 42.9 days when healthy larvae were eaten. These means were significantly different (P < 0.05). There was no germination of Vairimorpha spores or development of the pathogen in G. punctipes. Differences in survival between treated and control groups were attributed to ingestion of a non-nutritive meal equivalent to a brief period of starvation. The insect should be able to compensate in its natural habitat by seeking other prey. We believe the potential of this insect as a vector in spore dispersal outweighs the relatively minor effects of spore ingestion observed in the laboratory.

Resumen
With a view to assessing the effect of temperature (ºC) and locations on species richness of thrips and whiteflies and their natural enemies (NEs), predatory Geocoris bug and Asian lady bug beetle (LBB) in mustard field of BARI Sarisha 16, the experiment was carried out at the farmers’ fields in two specific locations of Southern Bangladesh, Rupsha, Khulna and Abhaynagar, Jessore during November, 2015 to March, 2016. The studies were laid out with randomized complete block deign (RCBD) maintaining four replicates. The results depicted that there was a significant variation in mean population abundance of thrips, whitefly and their predators across the observation dates, which principally resulted from the variation of temperature along the various observation dates in each location and between locations along with phenological characters of host plants. Initially, population of thrips and whitefly, and their predators were very low in both locations at first observation date of 20 November, 2015 which gradually colonized and reached the peak in 19 March, 2016 with temperature of 27.8°C and 71% RH in Khulna and 26.1ºC and 61% RH in Jessore. Notably, temperature ranging from 22–27°C during mid-February to March, 2016 considerably favors the species richness of both insect pests, thrips and whiteflies, and their predators, Geocoris bug and Asian lady bug beetle in both places. By contrast relative low temperature of 16–20°C from December 20, 2015 to January 29, 2016 affected the species richness of predators and pest as well. The yield of mustard, BARI Sarisha 16 was significantly higher in Jessore (1365.75 kgha–1) due to lower pest population and higher predator population relative to Khulna region (1277.25 kgha–1). Ecological factors especially temperature appeared as major striking factor of species richness and played crucial role in getting up and down of mustard insect pests and NEs population across various date of observations and between places.J. Resumen
The objective of this on-farm study was to determine if peanuts harbor populations of stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) and their natural enemies in Georgia. Eight species of phytophagous stink bugs were found in peanuts over the 5-yr study. The predominant stink bug species were Nezara viridula (L.), Euschistus servus (Say), Euschistus quadrator (Rolston), and Oebalus pugnax pugnax (F.). The remaining 4 species, Acrosternum hilare (Say), Euschistus tristigmus (Say), Euschistus ictericus (L.), and Thyanta custator accerra McAtee, were found in relatively low numbers. All developmental stages of N. viridula, E. servus, E. quadrator, A. hilare, and O. p. pugnax were collected at various times in the study indicating that these 5 species of stink bugs were developing on this crop. Seasonal abundance of N. viridula and E. servus nymphs and adults provided further support that these 2 species of stink bugs developed on peanuts. At least 1 generation of N. viridula and E. servus occurred in peanuts each year, and generally some of the adults that developed on peanuts oviposited on peanuts producing another generation of nymphs in this crop. Because only adults of T. c. accerra, E. tristigmus, and E. ictericus were found in peanuts, these 3 stink bug species probably were not developing on this crop. Adult stink bugs were parasitized by the tachinid parasitoids Trichopoda pennipes (F.) and Cylindromyia spp. Stink bug eggs were parasitized by the scelionids, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston), Trissolcus thyantae Ashmead, Trissolcus brochymenae (Ashmead), Telenomus podisi Ashmead, and Gryon obesum Masner, and an unknown encyrtid species. Geocoris punctipes (Say), Geocoris uliginosus (Say), Orius insidiosus (Say), Podisus maculiventris (Say), and Oxyopes salticus Hentz preyed on stink bugs in peanuts. Peanuts harbor populations of stink bugs and their natural enemies, and thus the role peanuts play in landscape ecology of stink bugs needs to be ascertained to better understand how to manage stink bug populations in landscapes in which peanuts are associated with other crops.

Resumen
Survival of Geocoris punctipes Say adults following exposure to azadirachtin, spinosad, thiamethoxam, diazinon, and imidacloprid was assessed in laboratory assays and greenhouse tests. In the laboratory assays, adults were continuously exposed for 48 h to filter papers treated with the individual insecticides. Survival was greatest following exposure to the untreated control (100 ± 0.0%), azadirachtin (95.0 ± 2.2%), and imidacloprid (81.7 ± 7.9%). Mean (± SEM) survival following exposure to spinosad (55.0 ± 11.2%) and thiamethoxam (46.6 ± 3.3%) was significantly lower, whereas diazinon killed all adults within 12 h of exposure. In the greenhouse tests, adults were continuously exposed to bush beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., foliage treated with the individual insecticides. Mean (± SEM) survival following 144 h of continuous exposure to treated foliage was 97.5 ± 2.5% for the untreated control, 92.5 ± 5.3% for azadirachtin, 92.5 ± 3.7% for diazinon, 72.5 ± 8.4% for imidacloprid, 70.0 ± 8.4% for spinosad, and 57.5 ± 8.8% for thiamethoxam. Statistically significant differences were observed with thiamethoxam versus diazinon, azadirachtin and the control. The results for the filter paper assay and the greenhouse tests are encouraging in terms of potential natural enemy conservation in IPM programs employing these insecticides.

Resumen
Roundup Ready® crops have become the dominant weed control system throughout the United States. Therefore, laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of Roundup Ready soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, and glyphosate on the fecundity and mortality of Geocoris punctipes (Say). Mortality of third instars and adults (∼30 d old) and fecundity of females exposed to glyphosate by direct spray application or residual on soybean foliage were not affected over a 10-d posttreatment period. Mortality of nymphs and adults exposed to transgenic soybean foliage did not differ from mortality of nymphs and adults exposed to foliage of conventional, glyphosate-susceptible soybean. Exposure of G. punctipes eggs to glyphosate spray had no effect on egg hatch. The knowledge of the minimal effects of Roundup Ready soybeans and glyphosate on predaceous arthropods promotes the use of the Roundup Ready soybean system.
