Resumen
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A multitude of factors affects the experience of the user on a specific site. Slow downloading, navigational difficulties and complex designs all play a role in destroying what could be an enjoyable experience to the user. Usability exists when the design of the system matches what the intended end users need and want. Most Web site designers agree that great design essentially has the user as its priority. Companies tend to forget that the user's hand is on the mouse. The most successful Web sites are those that not only respond to user feedback, but actively seek it out. We have to realise that the cost of flipping to another Web site is so low, it doesn't make any sense for people to go back to a site that failed them the first time. Most Web sites fail miserably at their prime directive: usability. The best way to run a user test is one-on-one, writes Fleming (1998:1). You don't need a large quantity of users for the tests to be effective. The costs in user testing are often exaggerated and there is no excuse for not performing some sort of user test on your Web site. When a page comes up Jakob Nielsen says, people look only one place, in the middle, at the content. (Head, 1999:2) If a page does not appear relevant to the user's current goals, then the user will ruthlessly click the Back button after as little as two to three seconds. Users rarely look at logos, mission statements, slogans, or any other elements they consider fluff. Usability is practically guaranteed if you have a solid information architecture at the outset. Make sure information is not more than two clicks away from the homepage. (Radosevich, 1997:3) According to the GVU7 survey, speed is the number one complaint of Web users (76,5 %). (Hamilton, 1997:1) Since users need web pages to load quickly, you should make your image files small. Try to limit the size of individual images to 5k, and try to limit the total size of all the images on any single page to 20k. Generally, a user with a 28.8 modem should have a sense of the page content or be able to navigate off the page within 10 seconds of download. The rest of the page should load within the next 30 seconds. Any site needs a good search feature since even the best navigation support will never be enough. (Nielsen, 1996a: 1) A search function should be provided if the site has more than 100 pages. Even if you haven't created perfect navigation, at least be consistent. (Berst, 1998: 1) The Back button is the lifeline of the Web user and the second-most used navigation feature (after following hypertext links). People rarely read web pages word by word - they scan pages to find the information they want. Make the text scannable with bulleted lists, highlighted keywords, meaningful headings, and short sections of text. The essential purpose of graphics, especially animated graphics, is to set the tone and communicate the company's personality in a unique and fun way. (Heath, 1997:1)

Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) need to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to enhance their business processes to become competitive in the global economy. When an information system is introduced to an organisation it changes the original business environment thus changing the original requirements. This in turn will change the processes that are supported by the information system. Also when users get familiar with the system they ask for more functionality. This gives rise to a cycle of changes known as co-evolution. In addition, SMEs have budget constraints which make the problem associated with co-evolution worse. One solution to overcome this situation is to empower end-users to develop and maintain the information systems. Within the above context the work presented addresses the following research question: “How to support SME end-users to develop and / or maintain Web applications to support their business processes?” There are two main components to this question: What are the requirements of a suitable end-user development approach for SMEs and how to create the Web applications based on the requirements. The requirements of a suitable end-user development approach can be established by identifying the different types of Web applications required by SMEs, the capabilities of end-users in relation to developing and / or maintaining Web applications and how they conceptualise the Web applications. The literature review is conducted to discover different types of Web applications required by SMEs and to identify a suitable end-user development approach and tools that can support the development of these various types of Web applications. According to the literature survey, the main types of Web applications required by SMEs can be categorised as information centric Web applications (Simple Web sites which focus on effective presentation of unstructured information), data intensive Web applications (the focus is on efficient presentation and management of structured data such as product catalogue) and workflow intensive Web applications (The focus is on efficient automation of business processes such as an order processing system). The literature on end-user development shows that the existing end-user development approaches are focused on specific types of Web applications. The frameworks and tools in the Web development discipline mainly target experienced Web developers. Therefore a gap is identified as “there are limited end-user development approaches for developments of different types of Web applications which are required by SMEs to IT enable their businesses’”. The capabilities of SMEs in relation to Web application development were identified based on a study conducted with a group of SMEs. This study first surveyed the SMEs experience and knowledge in relation to Web application development and their attitude towards end-user development. Then their capabilities relating to Web application development were studied in a hands-on session to develop a Web site. The second study is conducted with administrative staff members involved in development of a Web application. This study helps to establish the requirements of a suitable end-user development approach from the point of view of the end-user developers. This study on end-user development observed the different activities carried out by end-users. Then the end-user was interviewed to identify the issues and benefits of end-user development in the project. Following that, a set of requirements for the end-user development approach was derived based on the findings from these two studies and the related literature: 1) A need to support different types of Web applications required by SMEs; 2) A need to support the specification of Web applications at the conceptual level; 3) A need for a common data repository to store the data used in different applications within the organisation; 4) Providing a common login to all applications within the organisation; 5) Striping a balance between Do it Yourself (DIY) and a professional developer that allows end-users to do the activities they are capable of while getting help from a professional developer to do the difficult tasks. The conceptual aspects of different types of Web applications (information centric, data intensive and process intensive) were identified based on a literature survey of existing conceptual modelling approaches. This set of aspects was refined by modelling selected Web applications for each type of Web application. The aspects needed to specify different types of Web applications are: presentation, data, task, workflow, access control, navigation, and personalisation. Then the usage of these aspects in a set of end-user specifications was analysed. This study reveals that end-users only focus on some of these aspects such as data and process to specify the applications. Therefore, another requirement for the development approach was identified – a need to support development of Web applications with minimum aspects. A meta-design paradigm based on the meta-model of Web applications is proposed to support the identified requirements. A meta-model of Web applications is developed based on the patterns of different types of Web applications. A component based Web application development framework called CBEADS (Component based eApplication Development and Deployment Shell) was extended to support the meta-model based development approach. Web applications can be created by populating the values for the attributes of the meta-model which are related to the attributes of different aspects of the Web applications at the conceptual level. The meta-model is organised into three levels: shell level, application level, and function level. Aspects common to many web applications are modelled at the shell level. The data model and user model are stored and managed at the shell level. This supports the requirements of common data repository and the common login to all applications. The aspects common to a web application are modelled at the application level. The function specific aspects required to implement the functionality of the Web application are modelled at the function level. The metamodel has two properties called overriding and inheritance. Inheritance property allows developing Web applications with minimum aspects. The activities required to develop the Web applications in a framework supporting the meta-model are grouped into three levels based on the complexity of these tasks named routine level, logical level and programming level. These different levels together with the overriding property help to balance between DIY and a professional developer. The meta-design paradigm is practically evaluated with a group of users including SMEs and students. The studies establish strategies for the success of the meta-design paradigm such as characteristics of individuals, facilitation and infrastructure. The original contributions of this thesis enhance the field of end-user development by providing a new end-user development approach that can be used by business end-users to develop web applications. More importantly the major contributions of this research provide a practical approach that can be used particularly by SME end-users with little or no previous experience in web application development. Significant research contributions are made in the following four areas: 1) Establishing requirements for an end-user development approach suitable for business users. 2) Identifying a set of aspects required to model different types of Web applications at the conceptual level. 3) Developing a meta-design paradigm based on the meta-model of different types of Web applications 4) Developing the strategies for successful use of the meta-design paradigm.

Hung, Wei-Hsi (Frank). "Supporting Organisational Critical Activities From Web Sites: An Evaluation Methodology Development". The University of Waikato, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2545.

Resumen
quot; Organisational critical activities quot; (OCAs) are activities which must be conducted by the organisation constantly in order to be successful in the industry. They are recognised as being essential to short, medium, and long-term success in that industry, have been significantly resourced and receive regular senior management monitoring and direction. Although these activities are extremely important, some empirical studies have shown that they are not well supported by organisations, particularly in the area of Web support. This thesis develops an evaluation methodology called the quot;organisational critical activity Web support evaluation methodology quot; (OCAWSEM) which can be utilised to elicit OCAs from organisations, evaluate whether an organisation acutes; OCAs are being supported by its Web site, and provide guidance on how the organisation can improve its Web site. To develop the OCAWSEM, this thesis reviews the relevant literature and proposes a prototype OCAWSEM. A new iterative case design (ICD) approach has been used in order to further develop the prototype, and then to test the improved OCAWSEM. The selected field cases were eight universities in New Zealand. In total, 43 semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior teams, middle level managers, and Web teams. A systematic review of these universitiesacute Web sites was performed from the provideracutes, rather than the useracutes perspective. The outcome shows that the Developed OCAWSEM is a valid and reliable methodology for the evaluation of the support for OCAs from Web sites in the universities in New Zealand. This thesis provides useful lessons, drawn from the development and testing processes, as the basis from which to develop more specific OCAWSEMs for use in other organisational and industry contexts. Both practitioners and academicians can gain a deeper understanding of the notion of OCAs, better elicit OCAs from management, conduct Web site evaluations, and discuss the support of the Web sites for the OCAs.

Resumen
A university library web site is created as a means for providing information resources and services without the limitation of time or space. To ensure that the design of the web site will not be an obstacle to their users, usability is a key issue raised among librarians. In the tertiary context, information literacy is also widely promoted since it is regarded as the skills that can empower human development in the Information Society. These two issues, web site usability and information literacy, have motivated this thesis which is a case study influenced by phenomenography. The research was conducted with the purpose of investigating the relationship between the design of a university library web site, in particular its usability, and the development of students' information literacy through their experience of using the web site. The understanding found within this research is informed by three clear phases of data collection: Phase 1: Development of the Criteria, Phase 2: Assessment of a Usable University Library Web Site Fostering Information Literacy, and Phase 3: Investigation of Students' Conceptions of Information Literacy Development. Various research methods were used in each phase: questionnaires, focus groups, and experts' selection of the criteria for Phase 1, heuristic evaluation and usability testing for Phase 2, and focus groups, think aloud protocols, and interviews for Phase 3. The data were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Two major outcomes are revealed as a result of the research. The first is the usability measures/criteria capable of reinforcing information literacy that can be useful in evaluating the design of a university library web site. The second is a model describing students' conceptions of information literacy development through the use of a university library web site. Results of the research also reveal that there is a relationship between the design of a university library web site, in particular its usability, and the development of students' information literacy through their experience of using the web site. This applies particularly at the information level, especially Information Literacy Attribute #2: finding and accessing the needed information efficiently and effectively. The students experience information literacy development through the use of a university library web site by experiential learning. Their conceptions of information literacy development can be divided into three categories: "no development", "restricted development", and "transferable development". Interestingly, there is no difference between students from different disciplines in terms of their ways of experiencing information literacy development through the use of a university library web site. Considering the results, the hypothesis that there is no relationship between the design of a university library web site, in particular its usability, and the development of students' information literacy through their experience of using the web site is rejected. In contrast, the hypothesis that there is no noticeable difference between students from different disciplines in their ways of experiencing information literacy development through the use of a university library web site is accepted. The research makes contributions to both theory and practice. Theoretically, it proposes a model describing students' conceptions of information literacy development through the use of a university library web site as well as the chronology and continuity of their conceptions. Practically, there are implications for university library web site design: implications for usability evaluation methods, for usability measures/criteria capable of supporting information literacy that can be used to evaluate the design of a university library web site, and for the usable and information literacy-supportive design of a university library web site. In addition, it also suggests some implications for information literacy development: implications for investigating the students' conceptions of information literacy development, for information literacy education in regard to the academic environment, and for information literacy education in regard to a university library. The study concludes with recommendations for possible future research in the hope that further insights into the design of a university library web site and information literacy development may be revealed.

Resumen
The goal of this thesis is to develop and implement a prototype that is validating a specifically suggested customer-oriented business model for the interactive multimedia iPad application C3LOOPS. The starting point of the design process is the development of a business model. This is a novelty in the community of interaction design. I explain the basis of the business modeling in order to understand this important part of every successful business. I perform a research in the theory of customer behavior and applied psychology and based on it and on the new theory of neuro-linguistic programming, I design a customer-oriented business model for accomplishing a win-win strategy for this new application. This business model includes a development of a web site. It is my background for defining an interactive ¬design for the web site. Based on the requirements that I define for a design, I implement a prototype of the main component of the design – the interactive C3LOOPS navigation menu. This way I validate the design and I proof a novelty in the community of interaction design.

Web portals are considered “gateways” to the World Wide Web. These portals are becoming very popular entry points to the Web by offering important services such as email, news, weather reports, course notes and general information. In addition, some portal sites allow users the option of customising the site according to their personal interests. However, disabled and elderly people encounter many accessibility and usability barriers while accessing web portals. A preliminary review of a university portal was conducted to identify some of these accessibility problems. This treatise presents an overview of the processes to be followed when conducting an accessibility and usability evaluation. In addition, it mentions some guidelines to be considered when specifically designing portals for use by many different users from varying backgrounds.

Resumen
This study identified current trends in website design and development for college and university recreation programs accredited by the NRPA/AALR Council on Accreditation. Emphasis was on design, content, governance, and development. The study was an attempt to provide insight for program administrators by identifying current practices related to website design and development. This was the first study to identify current trends in website design and development at nationally accredited recreation programs. This information can be used to evaluate existing websites and plan future website development. Data were collected using an electronic survey instrument created with E-listen software. Three invitations were emailed to program administrators at college and university recreation programs accredited by the NRPA/AALR Council on Accreditation (n=98). Basic descriptive statistics including measures of central tendency and frequency distributions were calculated to address the research questions. The results of this study showed that faculty were most often responsible for their program’s website construction, content and design input, and maintenance. Students did not play a large role in these responsibilities. The websites were most commonly maintained monthly. The most common components available on program websites were informative and served as marketing and recruiting tools. The majority of websites did not contain components for student entertainment or communication. Over half of the websites included links to professional organizations’ homepages. Just under half of the websites did not include a link to the National Recreation and Park Association.

Tonnellier, Aurore. "Le statut juridique du site internet". Thesis, Paris 2, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA020068.

What is the legal framework regulating the web site? The main purpose of this question is to invite the reader into the world of web sites and the surrounding legal regime. The doctoral law thesis aims to shed light on the specificities of the web site’s legal framework. The thesis is divided into two parts: the first part is dedicated to the legal provisions of web site development and the second part is dedicated to the provisions of web site processing. The first part of the thesis, dedicated to the development of web sites, studies the different types of contracts related to web sites including web site development and design contracts, hosting contracts, search engine optimization, and content management system contracts. In addition, it delves into the web site’s requirements: legal web site registration, domain name, legal information and the independent administrative authority protecting privacy and personal data (CNIL), and last but not least the relationship website-copyright. The second part of the thesis, dedicated to the management of web sites, studies online communication, e-commerce, the relationship web site-advertisement, and digital business assets. This doctoral thesis therefore emphasizes the fact that the Internet is not only a universal tool, but also a living matter that challenges the legal profession day after day, and innovation after innovation to encompass new solutions and new regulations as a response to the arising conflicts posed by the evolution of web sites

Resumen
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Helderberg.com started out as a Virtual Village, with its roots firmly entrenched in the community newspaper from which it developed - the DistrictMail. It quickly evolved into a full blown community newspaper website with its own business model, earning its own way. Dotcoms are based on a virtual business model not seen up till now, trying to replace 'bricks and mortar' with 'clicks and mortar', making it difficult for investors to evaluate its worth. The DistrictMail community newspaper has been the heartbeat of the Helderberg, reflecting the news and views of the people of the area, for almost seventy-five years. Helderberg.com adds value and completes the circle. The success of companies depends on profitability. Bringing old and new media together, helderberg. com is the first community newspaper website to carry its own advertisers, and the first to break even and even make profit in the notoriously difficult dotcom internet arena. This paper examines how a community newspaper website is made - dissecting the internal and external makings, and shows helderberg. com is based on a structure and business model that has economic sustainability on which similar sized community newspapers, can launch or build their online enterprise.

Our mission was to create two different web sites. We have been involved in the entire process from idéa to finished product. We have developed web sites for RFSL’s campaign called Jag är fri (eng. I am free) and the music duo Laszlo & Tear. The web sites differ from each other – Jag är fri has a social benefit and Laszlo & Tear is classified as entertainment. We saw, however, a common denominator – both sites should operate in promotional porposes and the recipient should clearly understand the purpose. We wanted to examine the best way to reach out with the right message through information architecture and graphical interface. This paper resulted in a guide that contributes knowledge of how to develop simpler more user friendly web sites.

Resumen
Software as a service is an emerging but important aspect of the web. WebServices play a vital role in providing it. Web Services are commonly provided in one of two architectural styles: a "REpresentational State Transfer" (REST), or using the "Simple Object Access Protocol" (SOAP.) Originally most web content was text and small images. But more recent services involve complex data structures including text, images, audio, and video. The task of optimizing data to provide delivery of these structures is a complex one, involving both theoretical and practical aspects. In this thesis work, I have considered two architectures developed in the REST architectural style and tested them on mixes of data types (plain text, image, audio) being retrieved from a file system or database. The payload which carries the actual content of a data transmission process can either be in Extensible Markup Language (XML) or JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). Both of these language notations are widely used. The two architectures used in this thesis work are titled as Scenario 1 and Scenario 2. Scenario 1 proposes two different cases for storing, retrieving and presenting the data via a REST web service. We investigate the question of what is the best way to provide different data types (image, audio) via REST Web Service. Payload size for JSON and XML are compared. Scenario 2 proposes an enhanced and optimized architecture which is derived from the pros of the first two cases in Scenario 1. The proposed architecture is best suited for retrieving and serving non-homogeneous data as a service in a homogenous environment. This thesis is composed of theoretical and practical parts. The theory part contains the design and principles of REST architecture. The practical part has a Web Service provider and consumer model developed in Java. The practical part is developed using the Spring MVC framework and Apache CXF, which provides an implementation using JAX-RS, the Java API for RESTful services. A glossary of acronyms used in this thesis appears in the appendix on page 101.

"Building reliable web services: methodology, composition, modeling and experiment". Thesis, 2008. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6074557.

Texto completo
Resumen
Finally, we perform a series of experiments employing several replication schemes and compare them with a non-redundant single service. Through the experiments, we evaluate both the reliability of the Web service paradigm and the correctness of the Web service composition algorithm.
In the paradigm, N-version programming technique is applied to increase the diversity of the system. As different versions of Web services or even different versions of their components are abundantly available in the Internet, the combination of different versions of the Web service or their components is thus becoming critical for enabling different versions in a server application using the N-version approach. We propose a dynamic Web service composition algorithm and evaluate with Petri-Net for verification purposes.
Moreover, we model the Web services with Markov chains and Petri-Nets to demonstrate the performance and reliability of the constructed Web services. Also, we develop the mathematical models to analyze the reliability of the Web services.
One of the latest achievements of the Internet usage is the availability of Web services technology and its dependability is becoming one of the most critical goals in Web related research. In this thesis, we propose a design paradigm for reliable Web services and a Web service composition algorithm. We describe the methods of dependability enhancement by redundancy in space and redundancy in time, using Round-robin scheduling technique, N-version programming and recovery block. The Web services are coordinated by a replication manager. It provides a Round-robin algorithm for scheduling the workload of the Web services and keeps updating the availability of each Web service. The replication algorithm and the detailed system configuration are described.

Resumen
This research project is one part of an intensive study concerning the development, design and marketing of Primary School Web sites, focussing on the construction of a Web site for Laerskool Lynnwood, Pretoria. The dissertation of my fellow-researcher, Ms Hendrihette du Preez focuses on the marketing and promotional aspects, where as my dissertation discusses content development, content management and Information design aspects. Due to the fact that a large part of the complete study consists of the specific development of the product, some parts of the two dissertations are necessarily similar or overlap in some instances (especially in chapter 3). However each dissertation can function as an independent entity that is supportive and complementary to the other.

Singh, Shawren. "An investigation into the influence of usability on the development of the browsing experience of electronic commerce applications". Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13291.

Texto completo
Resumen
We investigate whether usability aspects affect the design and development of the browsing experience in electronic commerce applications. The study is limited to the generic electronic commerce activities and does not address the financial perspective. As background we studied the electronic commerce domain, interaction design and information systems development methodologies. Within a quasi-experimental research design we then developed two experimental websites to test our hypotheses that the usability principles of consistency, structured information and navigation affect the users of a website: one adhering and one violating these principles. Respondents were required to record their perceptions of both using a questionnaire. We found that usability issues had a minimal influence on the perceived success of the websites. It is thus only one of many factors that needs to be considered in the design and development of a successful electronic commerce website, and cannot be treated as an isolated add-on.

Cottrell, Genevieve Lee. "The development of a reference database of health information resources to facilitate informed lifestyle choice". Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2018.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study investigates, within the current health care situation, the interrelationship of the user, resources and tool in the design of a prototype WELLNESS database-driven web site. A shift has taken place in health care, in which the base of conventional medicine has broadened to integrate other systems, practices and worldviews. These include complementary and alternative medicine, health promotion, disease prevention and wellness. Emphasis is placed on the need to take personal responsibility for one's own health and wellness. The global burden of chronic disease, reaching epidemic proportions, is increasingly linked to risk factors resulting from personal lifestyle choices. The growing evidence of the user's need to make personal, informed, lifestyle choices and their reliance on the Web for health information, required investigation. WELLNESS, a specific orientation to health and wellness, formed the framework within which the user and resources were defined and the tool designed. The user was profiled as the WELLNESS health information seeker, hereby contributing significantly to an understanding of the user in this new context. The user profile informed the establishment of resource selection criteria and tool design. The identification of WELLNESS content selection criteria, within a five-dimensional model, was required to ensure quality, relevant and credible resources. The tool is comprised of the WELLNESS thesaurus and WELLNESS database-driven web site. The WELLNESS thesaurus was constructed based on a combination of relevant thesauri. It will be used as an indexing tool. An investigation of existing health information web sites highlighted the importance of designing a specific WELLNESS database-driven web site. A database host was identified against which the original study's conceptual schema was assessed. A low-fidelity prototype web site was designed as the interface between the WELLNESS health information seeker and the database of WELLNESS health information resources. This study has epidemiological, philosophical, epistemological, sociological and psychological relevance. The provision of access to WELLNESS health information resources, made available in the WELLNESS database-driven web site, for personal, informed lifestyle choice by the WELLNESS health information seeker could potentially contribute to the reduction of the global burden of chronic disease.
