Resumen
Patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) and related functional neurological symptoms are highly prevalent yet poorly understood on a neurobiological level. Clinical and research efforts in PNES and other functional neurological symptoms have lagged behind clinical neuroscience advancements in other neuropsychiatric conditions, despite the high frequency with which clinicians encounter PNES and other functional neurological symptoms. In this chapter, systems-level neurobiological studies in PNES are reviewed. Specific emphasis is given to structural and functional neuroimaging, electrophysiology, autonomic, and neuroendocrine investigations. Early systems-level neurobiology research suggests that PNES may develop in the context of alterations within and across brain networks mediating emotion processing, regulation and expression, cognitive control, multimodal integration, and sensory-motor functions. An improved biological understanding of PNES may reduce the stigma associated with this neuropsychiatric disorder and aid the development of biologically informed treatments and biomarkers of treatment response in this population.

Resumen
Abstract Harris' Developmental Neuropsychiatry is an update of the First Edition, which introduced the integration of developmental neuroscience into the understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of children with neuropsychiatric conditions. It opens with a comprehensive review of methods of assessment including behavior rating scales and neuropsychological testing moving from the scientific underpinnings to clinical application. The developmental aspects of components of cognition including attention, emotion, language, memory and consciousness are reviewed. It addresses how current brain imaging techniques have transformed our ability to link specific cognitive/emotional states to brain structure and function in health and disease. Historically, discussion of social and emotional development did not generally include the role of the brain. The Harris textbook commits significant space to connecting attachment, social development and temperament to normal brain maturation and pathologies associated with genetic disorders and environmental risk factors. The textbook closes by reviewing the diagnosis and treatment of several childhood neuropsychiatric disorders that can now be viewed through a lens informed by the prior basic chapters. The late James Harris, MD was a pioneer in bringing the brain into Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and this textbook demonstrates how radically the advances in neuroscience and genetics have transformed the field and improved the care of this vulnerable population.

Resumen
This chapter reviews aging and the brain from an important, alternative, still-underappreciated scientific and medical perspective. It briefly describes the history of brain plasticity-related neuroscience, then describes change processes that shape our brains in ways that ultimately distinguish the typical struggling older versus peak-performing younger brain. It considers how and why processes that contribute to personal growth at a younger age are commonly thrown into reverse at an older age. It reviews the development of new brain science–based tools that appear to throw the “plasticity switch” for brain health back in a corrective and strengthening direction, where change processes again support the growth and the more reliable maintenance of physical and functional brain health. Finally, it summarizes how this translational science shall almost certainly evolve to enable a new, neuroscience-directed medical era of brain health management for our older-age populations.

Resumen
The pressure for reduction in science is an artifact of what we call the nomic conception of science (NCS): the idea that the content of science is a collection of laws, together with the deductive-nomological model of explanation. NCS in effect identifies explanation with reduction, thus making no room for the explanatory autonomy of function-analytical explanations. When we replace NCS with something more descriptively accurate, however, we find that the kind of explanatory autonomy of functional-analytic explanations is ubiquitous in the sciences. Key to showing this is a distinction between horizontal and vertical explanation. Horizontal explanations explain the capacities of a complex system by appeal to the design of the system. Vertical explanations, by contrast, explain how a design is implemented in a system. We argue that the distinction between horizontal and vertical explanations provides us with a better picture of the relationship between functional analysis and mechanistic explanation.
