Texto completoIn human computer interaction, virtual humans are now established as a specific object of research. They build on human to human interaction routines to serve various application goals. Although Virtual Humans (VH) have bodies, current researches suffer from two major limitations which impair the experienced credibility: modeled bodily behaviors lack of social interactivity and do not account for individual differences. Recent developments in human sciences call for a more integrative approach with at its heart the constitutive role of social interaction. Of particular importance is the central and interdisciplinary position of virtual humans in this new research agenda: they are both a way to better investigate the various socially interactive phenomena (VH as experimental tools) and potential solutions for societal challenges (VH as applications). The main goal of this PhD thesis is to contribute to both computer and human sciences by studying together bodily interaction and individual differences. Central to this study is the long term objective to develop interactive virtual humans at the interface of these domains, with the idea that requirements from both fields would constrain positively future propositions. To limit the scope of the thesis, we focused on body movements (not considering static bodily aspects or other modalities), low level coupling mechanisms and the moderating role of individual differences with the aim to propose proof of concept of virtual human prototypes (rather than complete functional software) embedding full body dyadic interaction models. Our research methodology can be summarized in four main steps. First, models and hypotheses linking social interaction processes and individual differences emerged from a review of the literature in both computer and human sciences. As the identified relevant individual differences appeared barely theoretically associated, our second step aimed at investigating their interrelatedness in a large scale study. Thirdly, bodily interactions were analyzed in two case studies which present application and experimental interests. In both cases, corpuses were collected with full body interacting dyads and individual differences measured. The final phase was to develop virtual human prototypes inspired by previous analyses and based on the collected data. The proposed general model of individual differences was shown to be consistent with real word data (collected by self-report questionnaires): dispositions in pro-social orientations, empathy and emotion regulation were closely related. The two case studies partially confirmed our initial hypotheses: various individual differences modulated the bodily interactive processes. These studies enabled the definition of parsimonious virtual human interactive models. The main critical contribution of the two case studies to the proposed model of individual differences is the clear necessity to take into consideration the task context before drawing any hypotheses. Future directions of research are proposed including an integration of individual differences identified in case studies

"Full-fledged semantic indexing and querying model designed for seamless integration in legacy RDBMS". Elsevier B.V, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10757/624626.
Texto completoIn the past decade, there has been an increasing need for semantic-aware data search and indexing in textual (structured and NoSQL) databases, as full-text search systems became available to non-experts where users have no knowledge about the data being searched and often formulate query keywords which are different from those used by the authors in indexing relevant documents, thus producing noisy and sometimes irrelevant results. In this paper, we address the problem of semantic-aware querying and provide a general framework for modeling and processing semantic-based keyword queries in textual databases, i.e., considering the lexical and semantic similarities/disparities when matching user query and data index terms. To do so, we design and construct a semantic-aware inverted index structure called SemIndex, extending the standard inverted index by constructing a tightly coupled inverted index graph that combines two main resources: a semantic network and a standard inverted index on a collection of textual data. We then provide a general keyword query model with specially tailored query processing algorithms built on top of SemIndex, in order to produce semantic-aware results, allowing the user to choose the results' semantic coverage and expressiveness based on her needs. To investigate the practicality and effectiveness of SemIndex, we discuss its physical design within a standard commercial RDBMS allowing to create, store, and query its graph structure, thus enabling the system to easily scale up and handle large volumes of data. We have conducted a battery of experiments to test the performance of SemIndex, evaluating its construction time, storage size, query processing time, and result quality, in comparison with legacy inverted index. Results highlight both the effectiveness and scalability of our approach.
This study is partly funded by the National Council for Scientific Research - Lebanon (CNRS-L), by the Lebanese American University (LAU), and the Research Support Foundation of the State of Sao Paulo ( FAPESP ). Appendix SemIndex Weighting Scheme We propose a set of weighting functions to assign weight scores to SemIndex entries, including: index nodes , index edges, data nodes , and data edges . The weighting functions are used to select and rank semantically relevant results w.r.t. the user's query (cf. SemIndex query processing in Section 5). Other weight functions could be later added to cater to the index designer's needs.

Texto completoUsing an identity arising in path sampling, we then derive general expressions for the Kullback-Leibler (KL) and Jeffrey (J) divergences between two distributions with common support but from possibly different parametric families. These expressions naturally stem from path sampling when the popular geometric path is used to link the extreme densities. Expressions for the KL and J-divergences are also given for any two intermediate densities lying on the path. Estimates for the KL divergence (up to a constant) and for the J-divergence, between a posterior distribution and a selected importance density, can be obtained directly, prior to path sampling implementation. The J-divergence is shown to be helpful for choosing importance densities that minimize the error of the path sampling estimates.
Finally we present the results of a simulation study devised to investigate whether improvement in performance can be achieved by using the KL and J-divergences to select sequences of distributions in parallel (population-based) simulations, such as in the Sequential Monte Carlo Sampling and the Annealed Importance Sampling algorithms. We compare these choices of sequences to more conventional choices in the context of a mixture example. Unexpected results are obtained, and those for the KL and J-divergences are mixed. More fundamentally, we uncover the need to select the sequence of tempered distributions in accordance with the resampling scheme.

Texto completoThe initial hypothesis of this study was that immigrants' involvement in narrow transnational activities is linked to their weaker integration into Quebec society. To test this hypothesis, a series of interviews was conducted with members of the Dominican community of Montreal. These Dominicans were involved in varying levels of transnational activities within political, economic, and cultural spheres. The interviews were aimed at determining the integration process experienced by the different interviewees.
The results of this study showed, in contrast to the hypothesized predictions, that involvement in transnational activities was not linked to lesser levels of integration. In fact, the Dominicans involved in the most intensive transnational activities revealed a capacity to integrate into the receiving society as easily as other Dominicans, often showing a greater dynamism in their integration. Involvement in intensive transnational activities seems to show a capacity on the part of some immigrants to grow and develop in two universes at the same time, that of the receiving and that of the sending society.

Texto completoThe scheme consists of using an orthogonal mesh of width h to decompose the region into some standard group of geometrical subregions for which numerical integration formulae are developed. Error formulae for these standard subregions are derived by approximating the integrand with its local Taylor polynomial approximation.
The method is adaptive in that only those subregions with insufficiently small error are further subdivided. The global error is shown to be of the fourth order in h, ensuring that subsequent refinements will result in a satisfactory total error. The scheme is illustrated with examples run on a programme written in the language UBASIC.

Texto completoThis work is devoted to the simulation of electrical/electronic circuits incorporating electromagnetic devices. The focus is on different couplings of the circuit equations, modeled with the modified nodal analysis, and the electromagnetic devices with their refined model based on full-wave Maxwell's equations in Lorenz gauged A-V formulation which are spatially discretized by the finite integration technique. A numerical analysis extends the topological criteria for the index of the resulting differential-algebraic equations, as already derived in other works with similar field/circuit couplings. For the simulation, both a monolithic approach and waveform relaxation methods are investigated. The focus is on time integration, scaling methods, structural properties and a hybrid approach to solve the underlying linear systems of equations with the use of specialized solvers for the respective subsystems. Since the full-Maxwell approach causes additional derivatives in the coupling structure, previously existing convergence statements for the waveform relaxation of coupled differential-algebraic equations are not applicable and motivate a new convergence analysis. Based on this analysis, sufficient topological criteria are developed which guarantee convergence of Gauss-Seidel and Jacobi type waveform relaxation schemes for introduced coupled systems. Finally, numerical benchmarks are provided to support the introduced methods and theorems of this treatise.

Economic reform and open door policies implemented over the last two decades have transformed China from a closed economy into a major trading power. China, which for more than a decade has unsuccessfully sought to join the GATT/WTO, finds APEC to be of immense symbolic and practical value. As a major member of APEC, China has made constructive role in the APEC process. With its dynamic economic growth and continuing economic reforms, China is poised to play an even greater role in APEC in the near future.

More specifically, it was the intent to measure the perceptions of persons directly involved with the program on such variables as social acceptance, social interaction, self-concept, motor performance, peer performance, attitude, expectations, and perceptions. A questionnaire was distributed to subjects in four groups: students, peers, physical educators, and parents. Mean response scores from each group were reported for each variable. Results indicated a general positive perception regarding the integrated program from all groups.

Texto completoIt is argued that as a strategy for development, the ECOWAS integration effort was inadequate because of undue reliance on tariff reductions--- so called "negative integration" measures. It is suggested that to facilitate a more cohesive integration program, countries in the region ought to adopt positive integration measures in the form of common policies on money and payments, industrialization and most significantly, a common policy on investments.
With respect to investment regulation, it is my argument that because liberalization of investment laws at the national level failed to attract the desired flow of foreign investment to the region, ECOWAS Member States ought to harmonize their regulatory framework with a view to ultimately adopting a single legal regime for international investment.
As a framework for analysis, I adopt the criteria of economic efficiency. This is a cost/benefit analysis of the transformations that occur as the result of contractual transactions. Where the costs to the parties exceed or are likely to exceed the benefits of the transaction, it is said to be inefficient. Using these criteria, I argue that in order to inject a level of fairness in investor/host state relations, and to avoid the costs of FDI to host societies exceeding the gains therefrom, international law ought to make binding prescriptions to govern corporate conduct. Based on this reasoning, I suggest a framework for improving the investment climate in West Africa.

Texto completoThe study offers an overview of Quebec's past and present immigration and integration policies and programs. It considers those policies in light of identity theory and, more specifically, focuses on the relationships between language learning, integration, and identity in the experience of adolescent immigrants within a francophone secondary school in Montreal. Based on interviews and participant observation conducted over 15 months, the study describes the ways in which the participants' integration and identity are shaped by school discourses and the standardizing imperative of most North American educational institutions. Findings suggest that the participants resist the school's discourses in order to assert themselves dialogically and relocate their sense of identity in their host society. However, the dialogic relationships that the students are able to establish with and within the school discourses are imbalanced, leaving several students to feel dislocated both physically and psychically throughout the study. The study indicates that a distributed notion of the Self might improve theory, policy, and pedagogy related to newcomer integration. Finally, specific suggestions are made for building on current educational-integration research and practice.

Texto completoThe double-grating coupler consists of two gratings: one acting as an outcoupler to couple the guided light from a waveguide to its radiation mode, and the other acting as an incoupler to couple the light in the radiation mode to the guided mode of another waveguide. The coupling between these two waveguides is therefore achieved. Since the coupling does not require field overlap between the guided modes of the two waveguides, the separation between the two waveguides can be large. This advantage leads to promising applications in optical integration in multi-layer photonic integrated circuits. A transfer efficiency of 29% is achieved between two SOI waveguides, and further optimization is possible by using blazed-gratings and Bragg reflectors.
In the second part of this thesis, we investigate a new theory for nonlinear frequency conversion in directional couplers. As is well known, when a harmonic oscillator is driven at resonance by an external harmonic force, the largest possible oscillation amplitude is obtained. Coupled mode theory shows that similar phenomena occur when the nonlinear effect takes place in a waveguide directional coupler. We show that by considering the amplitude of the second harmonic signal in the coupled waveguides as an oscillator and the nonlinear polarization as an external harmonic force, a resonant condition can be found, resulting in highly efficient power transfer from pump to signal. Similar resonant effects also occur in other nonlinear frequency conversion effects. The proposed phenomena can also be understood by phase-matching between the supermodes of directional couplers. On one hand, the new theory has fundamental significance for nonlinear optics, on the other hand, it also demonstrates that waveguide directional couplers can be found in a new application area besides integrated optics and optical communication. We also report the first experimental observation of continuous-wave second-harmonic generation in waveguide directional couplers. We employ a GaAs/AlGaAs system and observe four resonance peaks in a ∼15nm spectral range, with a maximal conversion efficiency of 1.6%W-1cm-2. This new configuration has the potential to open a new range of applications for nonlinear frequency conversion.

Texto completoA theoretical model of experts' knowledge was developed from a semantic analysis of expert-produced texts. This "expert model" was used to evaluate the extent of students' theoretical knowledge of photosynthesis, and its accessibility while applying it to the experimental tasks. College students and university graduate students served as subjects in the study, permitting a contrast of groups varying in prior knowledge of and expertise in chemistry.
Statistical analyses of data obtained from coding subjects' verbal protocols against text propositions and the expert model revealed that prior knowledge and comprehension contribute significantly to predicting knowledge integration, but they are not sufficient for this process to take place. It appears that qualitative aspects and specific characteristics of subjects' knowledge structure contribute to the process of integration, not simply the amount of accumulated knowledge. There was also evidence that there are specific inferential processes unique to knowledge integration that differentiate it from test comprehension. Cues manifested their effects on performance on comprehension tasks and integrative tasks only through their interactions with other factors. Furthermore, it was found that textual complexity placed specific constraints on students' performance: the application of textual information to the integrative tasks and students' ability to build conceptual frame representations based on text propositions depended on the complexity of the textual material. Texto completoThe layout and design of the optical receiver is presented. The effects of misalignments, optical power variations, and device non-uniformity on receiver performance are considered. With these design parameters in mind, the construction of a receiver assembly is described from the first step of packaging the photodetector array to the last interconnecting cable connection. Specific packaging challenges that are discussed include power dissipation, connectivity, and electrical isolation as related to receiver performance. The method and results of characterization are presented in relation to its meeting the requirements of a receiver array in a free-space optical backplane. Future areas for improvement are then considered.
