With the continuous advancement of digital globalization, enterprises need to seek development opportunities in the context of diversification and resource shortage. Frugal innovation provides a new way for enterprises to realize social value and create a win-win situation. Based on 113 enterprises’ survey data, fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) and necessary condition analysis (NCA) are used to explore the multiple concurrency factors and causality mechanisms of digital transformation, organizational resilience, learning from failure and design thinking for frugal innovation. It is found that: (1) Digital transformation, organizational resilience, internal learning from failure, external learning from failure and design thinking cannot effectively stimulate frugal innovation alone, and linkage matching of multiple antecedents is needed to promote frugal innovation. (2) There are three paths to producing high frugal innovation, namely, external learning from failure and design thinking driving under digital transformation learning from failure driving under design thinking guidance, organizational resilience driving under digital transformation. (3) There are two paths to produce non-high frugal innovation, which are asymmetrical with high frugal innovation path. Our results are helpful for the study of digital transformation and frugal innovation at the enterprise level. In addition, our research results also provide practical solutions and a theoretical basis for enterprises to carry out frugal innovation activities under the new economic normal.

New information and communication technologies (ICTs) are contributing to the advancement and popularization of distance learning, and its use by educational institutions is accelerating. Some characteristics of distance learning are remarkable, such as its quantity, scalability, ability to serve many students at the same time, scope, lower costs, and so on. Some of these characteristics refer to a type of innovation called frugal, which is the ability to "do better with fewer resources for more people", that is, create significantly more value and minimize the use of resources. The objective of this research was to analyze the characteristics of distance learning through the theoretical lens of frugal innovation using the conceptual model of frugal innovation. The characteristics listed in the Rossetto model were researched qualitatively and quantitatively to obtain a solid conclusion, as this model uses a scale to identify and measure frugal innovation. The Rossetto model was developed and tested using the results of five collections of data from three different countries (Brazil, the United States of America, and India), with the entire development and refinement processes being subjected to an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The final validation of the scale was based on data from 1130 companies. The mixed (qualitative and quantitative) methodological procedures were used to analyze the data obtained from the field research. The qualitative analysis consisted of verifying the characteristics of frugal innovation through Rossetto's conceptual model, and exploratory factor analysis was chosen for the quantitative analysis. Ten of the characteristics of the model sought, analyzed in three dimensions, identified, and strongly indicated that ODL can be considered as a frugal innovation, convincing and confirming that ODL has as main characteristics of the FI such as cost reduction, focus on essential functionalities and improved performance in relation to face-to-face teaching and thus, highlighting that the main value created is to do better with fewer resources than traditional teaching for a greater number of students served.

The increasing demand for democratizing machine learning algorithms calls for hyperparameter optimization (HPO) solutions at low cost. Many machine learning algorithms have hyperparameters which can cause a large variation in the training cost. But this effect is largely ignored in existing HPO methods, which are incapable to properly control cost during the optimization process. To address this problem, we develop a new cost-frugal HPO solution. The core of our solution is a simple but new randomized direct-search method, for which we provide theoretical guarantees on the convergence rate and the total cost incurred to achieve convergence. We provide strong empirical results in comparison with state-of-the-art HPO methods on large AutoML benchmarks.

Les entreprises ont besoin d’employés capables de répondre aux nouveaux défis dans les domaines commerciaux, sociaux et environnementaux. Cette étude analyse l’impact de certaines méthodes innovantes d’apprentissage. Avec un échantillon de 462 étudiants et un design casi-expérimental avec pré et post-test et un groupe de control, notre étude combine le comportement au travail innovant (CTI) avec les principes de l’innovation frugale (PIF) pour obtenir le comportement au travail innovant et frugal (CTIF). Les résultats révèlent que les étudiants de troisième cycle en alternance présentent un CTIF plus élevé que les étudiants qui n’effectuent pas de stage en entreprise et qui ne font qu’étudier.

While Industry 4.0 focuses on enabling real-time decision-making with sophisticated technology to enhance productivity, digital taxation can serve as an important tool for improving business sustainability. Institutions of higher learning (IHL), which aim to design an IR 4.0 educational ecosystem, can embrace digital taxation, as they face various challenges with different resources. The literature indicates that frugal innovation through digital taxation in institutions of higher learning, can solve emerging resource challenges. Method: We present a systematic review of studies on digital taxation to promote frugal innovation published in the past three decades (1991 to 2021). We obtained a total of 21 papers from a ‘digital taxation’ keyword search, 10 of which were related to digital taxation. However, the 10 papers were not related to frugal innovation. Result: We present two major findings. Firstly, research on digital taxation for frugal innovation is scant. Secondly, challenges exist in digital taxation implementation, which requires further attention. Conclusion: We conclude this review with a recommendation for the conceptual framework, to highlight potential research warranting the attention of the research community.

Frugal Living or commonly known as a frugal lifestyle is a lifestyle that places a person's consciousness at the highest level when using the money they have while still paying attention to the value of an item. Many people interpret a frugal lifestyle as a frugal lifestyle, which is not wrong, although when it comes to the word frugal, individuals usually put aside the qualities obtained by adopting a frugal lifestyle. Childfree is a term that is often referred to as a concept when married couples decide to choose a life path of not having or raising children. Frugal Living and Childfree are lifestyles that are widely adopted by society, especially young married couples, for the reason that the decision not to have or raise children is because they do not have enough income so that if they have or raise children it will only increase their obligations which will lead to difficulties in managing them. Family finance. These couples of childbearing age (PUS) believe that frugal living is one of their actions by not having or raising children so that their finances can be managed well. Financial literacy is the ability to understand and use a variety of financial skills effectively, including personal financial management, budgeting, and investing. When you are financially literate, you have a basic relationship with money, and it is a lifelong learning journey. The earlier you start, the better off you will be, because education is the key to success when it comes to money. This research seeks to find a relationship between the literacy level of every young couple in Indonesia and the decision to adopt a frugal and childfree lifestyle, especially in West Java Province.

Algorithms typically come with tunable parameters that have a considerable impact on the computational resources they consume. Too often, practitioners must hand-tune the parameters, a tedious and error-prone task. A recent line of research provides algorithms that return nearly-optimal parameters from within a finite set. These algorithms can be used when the parameter space is infinite by providing as input a random sample of parameters. This data-independent discretization, however, might miss pockets of nearly-optimal parameters: prior research has presented scenarios where the only viable parameters lie within an arbitrarily small region. We provide an algorithm that learns a finite set of promising parameters from within an infinite set. Our algorithm can help compile a configuration portfolio, or it can be used to select the input to a configuration algorithm for finite parameter spaces. Our approach applies to any configuration problem that satisfies a simple yet ubiquitous structure: the algorithm's performance is a piecewise constant function of its parameters. Prior research has exhibited this structure in domains from integer programming to clustering.

This study proposes an implementation of an incremental neural network (INN) that was initially designed for affective computing tasks. INNs are a family of machine learning algorithms that combine prototype-based classifiers with neural networks. They achieve state-of-the-art performance with less data than traditional approaches. In this research, we conduct an in-depth review of INN mechanisms and present a research-grade framework that enables the use of INNs on arbitrary data. We evaluated our implementation on two different datasets, including the AVEC2014 Challenge, which involved predicting depressive state from auditive and visual modalities. Our results are encouraging, demonstrating the potential of INNs in situations where approaches have to be explainable or when data are scarce.

This study aims to learn the impact of human capital, social capital, and financial constraints on frugal innovation as perceived by family businesses in the Philippines. Quantitative research was performed using data collected from 93 family businesses, which were analyzed using simple linear regression and structural equation modeling. The results showed that human capital, social capital, and financial constraints, individually and collectively, have a significant impact on frugal innovation. The results also indicated that all measures used for human capital and financial constraints are acceptable, while some measures of social capital and frugal innovation were deemed unfit and were removed from the model. The academe should expand or improve its discussion and curriculum on frugal innovation and continue to look at this through the lenses of its theoretical and practical aspects. Moreover, professors and students should study the relationship further and ultimately expand knowledge and understanding. Family businesses should prioritize improving their human capital to enhance their frugal innovation capabilities. Implementing efficient financial procedures, investigating alternative funding sources, and actively seeking external finance opportunities are crucial. Moreover, family businesses should develop robust social networks. Lastly, the Philippine government should actively encourage continuous learning through mentorship programs and networks.

Learning outcomes The learning outcomes are as follows: Understand the concept and characteristics of Bottom of Pyramid (BoP) markets; understand the concept and characteristics of frugal innovations; understand the Design Thinking approach to product design and how it might be useful to develop frugal innovations for BoP markets. Case overview/Synopsis The case details the journey of a group of students at a premier engineering college in India. The group aimed to develop and implement a social innovation that addressed a serious and important health issue – menstrual hygiene practices among urban slum dwellers in India. The case begins with how a chance visit to an NGO inspired a pair of students to take up this issue, how the project unfolded at their college, the challenges faced in their journey and, finally, an outcome that was only a partial success. It raises important questions of challenges that are specific to bottom of pyramid markets in emerging economies. The case can provide a context for discussions on approaching frugal innovations from a Design Thinking perspective. Complexity academic level This case can be used in social innovation courses/modules at an undergraduate or graduate level in social innovation and social entrepreneurship courses. The case is best positioned towards the beginning of the course as an overview of the process of Social Innovation, and to discuss the relevance of concepts of BoP markets and frugal innovation. Students' frugal attitude is influenced in part by their understanding of economics education delivered by teachers. Economics education is a dynamic learning process closely linked to students' everyday lives, encompassing concepts like needs, priority scales, and economic principles. This research aims to investigate the impact of economics education on students' frugal lifestyles. It employs a qualitative descriptive approach, specifically a case study research design. The findings reveal that 1) The economics education process at MAN 1 Terbanggi Besar consists of several stages: (a) The pre-instructional stage, an initial phase where the teacher takes attendance, inquires about previous discussions, conducts post-tests and pre-tests, and briefly reviews prior material. (b) The instructional stage, involving the presentation of prepared lesson materials, which includes explaining learning objectives, delivering subject matter, providing concrete examples, using tools and media, and summarizing discussion outcomes. (c) The evaluation stage, aimed at assessing the success level of the second stage, the instructional phase. 2) The Impact of Economics Education on the Frugal Lifestyle Attitude of 12th-Grade Students at MAN 1 Terbanggi Besar encompasses: (a) Prioritizing needs over wants, (b) Being wise in spending, (c) Leading a simple life, (d) Practicing disciplined saving.

Deep learning increasingly accelerates biomedical research, deploying neural networks for multiple tasks, such as image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation. However, neural networks are commonly trained supervised on large-scale, labeled datasets. These prerequisites raise issues in biomedical image recognition, as datasets are generally small-scale, challenging to obtain, expensive to label, and frequently heterogeneously labeled. Furthermore, heterogeneous labels are a challenge for supervised methods. If not all classes are labeled for an individual sample, supervised deep learning approaches can only learn on a subset of the dataset with common labels for each individual sample; consequently, biomedical image recognition engineers need to be frugal concerning their label and ground truth requirements. This paper discusses the effects of frugal labeling and proposes to train neural networks for multi-class semantic segmentation on heterogeneously labeled data based on a novel objective function. The objective function combines a class asymmetric loss with the Dice loss. The approach is demonstrated for training on the sparse ground truth of a heterogeneous labeled dataset, training within a transfer learning setting, and the use-case of merging multiple heterogeneously labeled datasets. For this purpose, a biomedical small-scale, multi-class semantic segmentation dataset is utilized. The heartSeg dataset is based on the medaka fish’s position as a cardiac model system. Automating image recognition and semantic segmentation enables high-throughput experiments and is essential for biomedical research. Our approach and analysis show competitive results in supervised training regimes and encourage frugal labeling within biomedical image recognition.

Objetivo: Analisar a produção científica na área de Inovação Frugal (IF), nas bases de dados Web of Science e Scopus (CAPES, 2021). Metodologia: A pesquisa é caracterizada como descritiva com abordagem quantitativa e aplicação da técnica bibliométrica. Assim, após definir a técnica e tema, a busca foi realizada nas bases WoS e Scopus por tópico, utilizando os termos “frugal innovation”, com intervalo de tempo de 2010 a 2020, resultando em 306 publicações na WoS e 396 na Scopus. Em seguida, os dados foram organizados na Planilha Excel e após, as publicações foram identificadas nas seguintes categorias: evolução temporal, áreas temáticas, publicações por países, autores e frequência de citações. Por fim, utilizou-se o software VOSViewer para a criação de mapas textuais e clusters de co-citação. Resultados: Destaca-se que a temática de Inovação Frugal vem crescendo em frequência de publicações, destacando-se o ano de 2020. Dentre os resultados, a Índia e Estados Unidos encontram-se entre os primeiros que mais publicam e em nona posição encontra-se o Brasil encontra-se em nona posição. Quanto a area, Gestão, Negócios e Contabilidade tem a primeira posição. Entre os anos de 201 a 2020, somando entre as bases, tem-se o total de 5.281 citações. Originalidade/Valor: O uso da técnica de bibliometria apresenta-se como uma ferramenta relevante para a disseminação do conhecimento científico e tecnológico, possibilitando aos pesquisadores a análise quantitativa, descritiva e prognóstica de publicações realizadas em uma determinada área da ciência. Além disso, este estudo contribui com a disseminação do conhecimento sobre a inovação frugal, que é necessária para países que buscam o desenvolvimento econômico a partir da diminuição do uso de recursos e atendendo uma maior quantidade de pessoas, que antes não tinham acesso a determinados mercados e produtos. Saving is an activity of setting aside some of the money or income you have to be saved for the purpose of managing the money. Seeing a lack of behavioral awareness saving students in Kukuk Sumpung Village, Gobang Village, Rumpin District, Bogor Regency, UPNVJ Lecturers and Students have the desire to provide guidance on how important it is to save and have a frugal lifestyle. for elementary school students and their parents by doing strengthening financial literacy and conducting outreach to students by involving students to help the school carry out fun teaching and learning activities and bring out innovations. Research with using this qualitative method was carried out in one of the villages at the top of Mount Eusing by giving lectures, in-depth observation and observations, socialization and practical teaching. Research result shows that the counseling carried out has helped the implementation of teaching and learning activities. By using Qualitative methods, in this case are used to measure the extent of students' awareness about saving, and students' knowledge in carrying out practices which are the result of socialization This was done to find out whether students can apply a frugal lifestyle in their daily lives.

This paper applies a social learning model to the optimal consumption rule of Allen and Carroll [Macroeconomic Dynamics5(2001), 255–271] and delivers convincing convergence dynamics toward the optimal rule. These findings constitute a significant improvement over previous results in the literature, in terms of both speed of convergence and parsimony of the learning model. The learning model exhibits several appealing features: it is frugal, is easy to apply to a various range of learning objectives, and requires few procedures and little information. Particular care is given to behavioral interpretation of the modeling assumptions in light of evidence from the fields of psychology and social science. Our results highlight the need to depart from the genetic metaphor, and account for intentional decision-making, based on agents' relative performances. By contrast, we show that convergence is strongly hindered by exact imitation processes, or random exploration mechanisms, which are usually assumed when modeling social learning behavior. Our results suggest a method for modeling bounded rationality, which could be interestingly tested in a wide range of economic models with adaptive dynamics.

Large Language Models (LLM) exhibit zero-shot mathematical reasoning capacity as a behavior emergent with scale, commonly manifesting as chain-of-thoughts (CoT) reasoning. However, multiple empirical findings suggest that this prowess is exclusive to LLMs that have exorbitant sizes (beyond 50 billion parameters). Meanwhile, educational neuroscientists suggest that symbolic algebraic manipulation be introduced around the same time as arithmetic word problems so as to modularize language-to-formulation, symbolic manipulation of the formulation, and endgame arithmetic. In this paper, we start with the hypothesis that much smaller LMs, which are weak at multi-step reasoning, can achieve reasonable arithmetic reasoning if arithmetic word problems are posed as a formalize-then-solve task. In our architecture, which we call SyReLM, the LM serves the role of a translator to map natural language arithmetic questions into a formal language (FL) description. A symbolic solver then evaluates the FL expression to obtain the answer. A small frozen LM, equipped with an efficient low-rank adapter, is capable of generating FL expressions that incorporate natural language descriptions of the arithmetic problem (e.g., variable names and their purposes, formal expressions combining variables, etc.). We adopt policy-gradient reinforcement learning to train the adapted LM, informed by the non-differentiable symbolic solver. This marks a sharp departure from the recent development in tool-augmented LLMs, in which the external tools (e.g., calculator, Web search, etc.) are essentially detached from the learning phase of the LM. SyReLM shows massive improvements (e.g., +30.65 absolute point improvement in accuracy on the SVAMP dataset using GPT-J 6B model) over base LMs, while keeping our testbed easy to diagnose and interpret, and within the reach of most researchers.

Development policies need to be based on an integrated interpretation of values, facts and trends. With such an aim, the notion of Sustainable Human Development is described as the normative starting point. It can be fruitfully combined with the Innovation Systems’ conceptualization of some main empirical issues that shape development possibilities; a factual approach is sketched where particular attention is given to issues of power. Such a combination of a normative approach with a factual approach needs to be complemented by a prospective approach. Here, some possible and interrelated outcomes of trends concerning knowledge, production, the environment and inequality are discussed. Probable scenarios, main risks and better alternatives are considered; the last include special combinations of ideas, agency and technology. Inclusive and frugal innovation emerges as a fundamental challenge. The success of related policies appears to be highly dependent on solving the difficult political problem of connecting advanced knowledge and not privileged sectors.

Hybrid learning has become the only solution to ensure the learning process still occurs in place of traditional classroom activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Following this condition, the phenomenon of "Zoom Fatigue" has emerged. Some of the symptoms reported are decreased learning motivation, low attention, and reduced responses. Thus, a refresher process, including the use of new playful and frugal learning media is necessary for varying children's learning activities. A learning intervention was designed to teach anatomy playfully as part of a biology curriculum. The Augmented Reality technology used in this research is a Humanoid 4D+ mobile application with flashcards, developed by Octagon Studio. This media displays information virtually on a smartphone screen when the application uses the camera to scan flashcards containing visual markers. A hybrid learning space is formed as students can see information virtually. But, physically, they are in control because they run applications and choose the type of flashcard they want to scan.
The research was undertaken in several learning parks in Solo City, Central Java Province, Indonesia, with a total of 43 volunteer teachers and 132 early primary students participating. Previously, the ACES team (part of a UKRI funded project) had provided online training on the use of this media with teachers. Each teacher would then implement the media for all students in each learning park. The teachers demonstrate the media and each student takes turns running the application to view information virtually, therefore experiencing interactive learning. The qualitative approach was conducted for capturing teachers’ perceptions of Augmented Reality media. A survey using the JISC online platform was distributed to capture participants’ reflections on the activities and media used. Based on findings, the media appears beneficial, effective, and efficient for teaching anatomy concepts. Its virtual features can attract the children’s attention and teachers do not need to bring a lot of physical teaching aids, just one application to explain all organ system concepts. Students can learn playfully on their own and feel new learning experiences. The results indicated that the intervention could create playful and frugal activities which build student engagement as a potential solution to address issues of Zoom Fatigue. The next stage of the project will involve volunteer teachers implementing the technology more widely in their classes.

Humans choose actions based on both habit and planning. Habitual control is computationally frugal but adapts slowly to novel circumstances, whereas planning is computationally expensive but can adapt swiftly. Current research emphasizes the competition between habits and plans for behavioral control, yet many complex tasks instead favor their integration. We consider a hierarchical architecture that exploits the computational efficiency of habitual control to select goals while preserving the flexibility of planning to achieve those goals. We formalize this mechanism in a reinforcement learning setting, illustrate its costs and benefits, and experimentally demonstrate its spontaneous application in a sequential decision-making task.

AbstractMarketing science seeks to prescribe better marketing strategies (advertising, product development, pricing, etc.). To do so we rely on models of consumer decisions grounded in empirical observations. Field experience suggests that recognition-based heuristics help consumers to choose which brands to consider and purchase in frequently-purchased categories, but other heuristics are more relevant in durable-goods categories. Screening with recognition is a rational screening rule when advertising is a signal of product quality, when observing other consumers makes it easy to learn decision rules, and when firms react to engineering-design constraints by offering brands such that a high-level on one product feature implies a low level on another product feature. Experience with applications and field experiments suggests four fruitful research topics: deciding how to decide (endogeneity), learning decision rules by self-reflection, risk reduction, and the difference between utility functions and decision rules. These challenges also pose methodological cautions.

On-device artificial intelligence has attracted attention globally, and attempts to combine the internet of things and TinyML (machine learning) applications are increasing. Although most edge devices have limited resources, time and energy costs are important when running TinyML applications. In this paper, we propose a structure in which the part that preprocesses externally input data in the TinyML application is distributed to the hardware. These processes are performed using software in the microcontroller unit of an edge device. Furthermore, resistor–transistor logic, which perform not only windowing using the Hann function, but also acquire audio raw data, is added to the inter-integrated circuit sound module that collects audio data in the voice-recognition application. As a result of the experiment, the windowing function was excluded from the TinyML application of the embedded board. When the length of the hardware-implemented Hann window is 80 and the quantization degree is 2−5, the exclusion causes a decrease in the execution time of the front-end function and energy consumption by 8.06% and 3.27%, respectively.

Continuous, real-time monitoring of occupational health and safety in high-risk workplaces such as construction sites can substantially improve the safety of workers. However, introducing such systems in practice is associated with a number of challenges, such as scaling up the solution while keeping its cost low. In this context, this work investigates the use of an off-the-shelf, low-cost smartwatch to detect health issues based on heart rate monitoring in a privacy-preserving manner. To improve the smartwatch’s low measurement quality, a novel, frugal machine learning method is proposed that corrects measurement errors, along with a new dataset for this task. This method’s integration with the smartwatch and the remaining parts of the health and safety monitoring system (built on the ASSIST-IoT reference architecture) are presented. This method was evaluated in a laboratory environment in terms of its accuracy, computational requirements, and frugality. With an experimentally established mean absolute error of 8.19 BPM, only 880 bytes of required memory, and a negligible impact on the performance of the device, this method meets all relevant requirements and is expected to be field-tested in the coming months. To support reproducibility and to encourage alternative approaches, the dataset, the trained model, and its implementation on the smartwatch were published under free licenses.

e18201 Background: Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) is prognostic for cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). We showed the change in NLR early during treatment to be a stronger, curvilinear predictor, i.e. patients with an intermediate change in NLR performed better than those with large decreases or increases. This led us to re-examine whether NLR is an optimal predictor of overall survival (OS). Methods: A retrospective review of 467 patients with advanced cancer who received ICIs from 2011 to 2017 at the Ohio State University was performed with IRB approval. NLR was collected at the initiation of ICI and on-treatment (median 21, IQR 8 days) and calculated as ratio of absolute neutrophil to lymphocyte counts. Variable selection machine-learning algorithms included fast and frugal decision trees and random forest, performed in R. Results: The machine-learning algorithm fast and frugal decision trees identified the ratio of NLR on treatment to baseline NLR, the NLR on treatment, the change in NLR and the cubic change in NLR to be the most informative predictors of survival at 12 months. A random forest algorithm identified the same four variables as the most important for prediction accuracy. Age, sex and cancer type were the least informative predictors in the model, suggesting the on-treatment NLR variables are of value across wide range of demographics. Conclusions: NLR measured during treatment, and its derivative values of the ratio to baseline, change from baseline, and the cubic change from baseline, hold more predictive value than NLR measured at baseline. Common control variables such as age, and sex showed little effect on the model, suggesting on-treatment NLR is useful across wide demographic space. [Table: see text]

Building extraction in aerial orthophotos is crucial for various applications. Currently, deep learning has been shown to be successful in addressing building extraction with high accuracy and high robustness. However, quite a large number of samples is required in training a classifier when using deep learning model. In order to realize accurate and semi-interactive labelling, the performance of feature description is crucial, as it has significant effect on the accuracy of classification. In this paper, we bring forward a compact and hybrid feature description method, in order to guarantees desirable classification accuracy of the corners on the building roof contours. The proposed descriptor is a hybrid description of an image patch constructed from 4 sets of binary intensity tests. Experiments show that benefiting from binary description and making full use of color channels, this descriptor is not only computationally frugal, but also accurate than SURF for building extraction.

Background: The detrimental impact of fluid overload (FO) on intensive care unit (ICU) morbidity and mortality is well known. However, research to identify subgroups of patients particularly prone to fluid overload is scarce. The aim of this cohort study was to derive “FO phenotypes” in the critically ill by using machine learning techniques. Methods: Retrospective single center study including adult intensive care patients with a length of stay of ≥3 days and sufficient data to compute FO. Data was analyzed by multivariable logistic regression, fast and frugal trees (FFT), classification decision trees (DT), and a random forest (RF) model. Results: Out of 1772 included patients, 387 (21.8%) met the FO definition. The random forest model had the highest area under the curve (AUC) (0.84, 95% CI 0.79–0.86), followed by multivariable logistic regression (0.81, 95% CI 0.77–0.86), FFT (0.75, 95% CI 0.69–0.79) and DT (0.73, 95% CI 0.68–0.78) to predict FO. The most important predictors identified in all models were lactate and bicarbonate at admission and postsurgical ICU admission. Sepsis/septic shock was identified as a risk factor in the MV and RF analysis. Conclusion: The FO phenotypes consist of patients admitted after surgery or with sepsis/septic shock with high lactate and low bicarbonate.

Case overview Reboot Systems was conceived as a reverse engineering/refurbishing company for used computers when Rahul Chowdhury and Subbarao came in contact with Anand Tater who had started a small business in the used computer market. The team recognised the potential of the refurbished computer market in India, which was largely unorganised with penetration of personal computers pegged at less than 5 per cent. They identified the opportunity to address the digital divide, caused by lack of affordability and accessibility, by providing inexpensive “as good as new” used computers to those who aspired to own a computer. Additionally, in extending the life of used computers on a large-scale through “frugal innovation”, they hoped to reduce the extent of e-waste generated in the economy. This case provides a rich description of an emerging market characterised by market heterogeneity, social-political governance with poor policy measures, unorganised markets, chronic shortage of resources and inadequate infrastructure. Entrepreneurs hoping to address social issues must tackle these problems at the grass-root level and come up with improvised solutions that address the unique needs of the heterogeneous and resource constrained market. Some of Reboot Systems pressing challenges were in building a viable strategic approach to the market and ensuring scalability in a sustainable way. Indonesian proverbs contain positive cultural values which are part of the character education of the Indonesian people. Therefore, this study aims to explain the values of character education in Indonesian proverbs. This research method is descriptive qualitative. Data were collected from Indonesian proverb books. Data analysis was carried out by identifying and classifying the proverbs based on the educational values they contain. This study finds that Indonesian proverbs have a minimum of 13 character education values: religious, honesty, discipline, justice, hard king, humility, independence, love of knowledge, loyalty, courage, frugal living, and social care. These values are very important for the younger generation. Therefore, the use and preservation of Indonesian proverbs in learning or the world of Indonesian education are very important to continue.

AbstractGranting a short-term loan is a critical decision. A great deal of research has concerned the prediction of credit default, notably through Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. However, given that their black-box nature has sometimes led to unwanted outcomes, comprehensibility in ML guided decision-making strategies has become more important. In many domains, transparency and accountability are no longer optional. In this article, instead of opposing white-box against black-box models, we use a multi-step procedure that combines the Fast and Frugal Tree (FFT) methodology of Martignon et al. (2005) and Phillips et al. (2017) with the extraction of post-hoc explainable information from ensemble ML models. New interpretable models are then built thanks to the inclusion of explainable ML outputs chosen by human intervention. Our methodology improves significantly the accuracy of the FFT predictions while preserving their explainable nature. We apply our approach to a dataset of short-term loans granted to borrowers in the UK, and show how complex machine learning can challenge simpler machines and help decision makers.

This paper proposes an improved control strategy of a robotic arm joint using hybrid controller consist of H∞ robust controller and iterative learning controller. The main advantage of this controller is the simple structure that made it possible to be implemented on a small embedded system for frugal innovation in industrial robotic arm development. Although it has a simple structure, it is a robust H∞ controller that has robust stability and robust performance. The iterative learning controller makes the trajectory tracking even better. To test the effectiveness of the proposed method, computer simulations using Matlab and hardware experiments were conducted. Variation of load was applied to both of the processes to present the uncertainties. The superiority of the proposed controller over the proportional integral derivative (PID) controller that usually being used in a low-cost robotic arm development is confirmed that it has better trajectory tracking. The error tracking along the slope of sinusoidal trajectory input was suppressed to zero. The biggest error along the trajectory that happened on every peak of the sinusoidal input, or when the direction is changed has been improved from 15 degrees to 4 degrees. This can be conceived that the proposed controller can be applied to control a low-cost robotic arm joint position which is applicable for small industries or educational purpose.

Abstract I describe dynamic teaching to adult, mainly immigrant students, who are new to philosophy and often are college “firsts.” Adult students have family, financial, and work obligations, whereas standard students are leisured outside of class and approach philosophy as consumers. I teach from assigned texts, dismissing as a conceit of philosophers that philosophical questions arise from real life experience. My students are intensely focused on their grades, frugal with their expenditure of academic effort, and prone to submit all of their coursework at the end of the semester. A syllabus requiring weekly assignments with citations curtails that. For immigrant students, who value their college degree as entry to the American dream, the hard work usually ascribed to them is, here, academic work. Learning to do philosophy in this way can result in enduring meta-skills of time management, focused reading, thinking, and group participation that carry over to other subjects and real life.

Abstract Water consumption during irrigation has been a much-researched area in agricultural activities, and due to the frugal nature of different practiced irrigation systems, quite a sufficient amount of water is wasted. As a result, intelligent systems have been designed to integrate water-saving techniques and climatic data collection to improve irrigation. An innovative decision-making system was developed that used Ontology to make 50% of the decision while sensor values make the remaining 50%. Collectively, the system bases its decision on a KNN machine learning algorithm for irrigation scheduling. It also uses two different database servers, an edge and an IoT server, along with a GSM module to reduce the burden of the data transmission while also reducing the latency rate. With this method, the sensors could trace and analyze the data within the network using the edge server before transferring it to the IoT server for future watering requirements. The water-saving technique ensured that the crops obtained the required amount of water to ensure crop growth and prevent the soil from reaching its wilting point. Furthermore, the reduced irrigation water also limits the potential runoff events. The results were displayed using an android application.

Most government schools and colleges run on low budgets in India, yet they cater to a large population of students. In government settings, biology labs lack basic equipment such as simple microscopes or compound microscopes or sometimes possess just one instrument. In the absence of compound or simple microscopes, the students lose interest in science. To solve this issue, the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, introduced the origami microscope, the foldscope, into the Indian educational system. In this article, we describe the design of a sustainable, inclusive, and equitable curricula for teaching biological concepts using the foldscope. We describe the implementation of foldscope-adapted curricula in post-secondary settings to teach natural selection, developmental biology, parasitology, and economic Zoology via individual, small-group, and large-group field trips, and project-based learning that involves experiential learning. We found that these culturally sensitive pedagogies involving translingual instructions had the potential to retain students and make science education accessible for the linguistically and culturally diverse population of India. We could successfully implement our project as per the five priority action areas outlined by UNESCO. Therefore, we propose the adoption of the foldscope-adapted curricula under SDG4 to make STEM education accessible in budget-frugal settings.

Case overview – This case describes the strategy adopted by Cisco India to develop the Advanced Services Router 901 (“ASR 901”), which is a next-generation 3G/LTE capable mobile backhaul and carrier Ethernet platform that is deployed at a cellular tower site or business premise to backhaul voice and data traffic into the core of the network. This was part of a larger strategy by Cisco headquarters to understand what could be built in the developing markets for the developing markets, as opposed to products conceived with only developed markets as the focus. Within a time frame of a few months, a team formed from scratch developed the ASR 901, the next-generation global networking technology product that was developed completely – from conception to launch – at the Bangalore site in India. The ASR 901 successfully took on the challenge of delivering all the functionalities and features required by sophisticated telecom clients, while meeting the specific requirements of its customers from the developing markets. ASR 901 was undoubtedly a milestone in Cisco India's indigenous innovation initiatives, and this case discusses the many challenges that had been faced during the process and the actions that had been taken to achieve success during this process. Expected learning outcomes – Through this case, students will understand the concepts of innovation, particularly reverse innovation, frugal innovation and disruptive innovation. They will learn how large organisations have managed to successfully innovate by creating small and independent teams within the organisation. The age of the students in primary school is at the concrete operational phase. A child at the concrete operational stadium is able to think operationally with a condition that his or her thinking material is in a concrete manner. Thus, it needs a research to figure out how the learning design is to build the religious and creative character. This research is conducted using the qualitative subject and object taking the background of State Primary School of Rejowinangun 1 Yogyakarta. The data was collected by means of observation, interview and documentation. The data analysis was conducted by defining the data collected and then a conclusion is made. The data validity was examined through the triangulation technique. The result of the research showed that the learning design of scientific-cum-doctriner-based Islamic education started from the need analysis of the student, objective design, materials, steps, sources and learning evaluation. The building of religious and creative character can result in: the habit to say salaam (greeting), doing a frugal behaviour as taught by the Prophet of Muhammad SAW, able to read the short Qur’an verses before starting to study, doing Shalat in congregation, doing Shalat Dhuha, doing Shalat punctually, implementing the readings and invoking after shalat, greeting firstly when meeting other people, buying the goods as needed and saving. Having a habit to read the book in the spare time and showing the active behaviour in the class.

The culture of saving discipline is one way to accustom children to managing money, the benefits of saving can be obtained when carrying out this saving activity regularly and diligently. This aims to carry out a frugal lifestyle and is also a development characteristic not to generate money which should be implemented early on. This research aims to apply the discipline of saving by utilizing piggy banks in the learning process. The type of research carried out is Evaluative (summative evaluation). The research design used is qualitative. Understanding of how to manage personal finances wisely and according to needs. This financial education must be given from an early age to children, especially preschool and elementary school children. The goal is that introduction from childhood will help children get used to managing their money properly and correctly from childhood to adulthood and be able to make the right decisions in using their money. The population in the study were all class III B MI DDI Tani Aman students in the 2023/2024 academic year with a sample of 1 class with a total of 28 students. The results of this study indicate that the use of piggy banks in the learning process of saving a culture of saving among students, it can be concluded that the use of piggy banks has a significant effect on students' attitudes in setting aside their money for savings and learning to save life and value money from an early age.

This article explores the possibilities of a cheap one-dollar microscope, the Foldscope, for enhancing out-of-school science education. Developed by Manu Prakash and Jim Cybulski from Stanford University, these origami-type paper microscopes make it possible to provide all students with their own microscopes, due to the low cost. This provides students the opportunity to engage in science outside of the classroom, as amateur sleuths engaged in environmental inquiries, e.g., determining the levels of pollution of local water resources. In this article the authors share two sets of research data: an activity where school students engaged in authentic problem-based learning using the Foldscopes, as well as student teachers’ experiences of engaging with Foldscope microscopes. The outcomes of the first research project indicate that affective outcomes and cognitive gains were achieved. Responses in the second research project included five categories: preparation and presentation; potential of the Foldscope; use of slideshow; energy/complements; and limitations. The conclusion reached was that Foldscopes hold possibilities for enhancing STS (science-technology-society) approaches inside and outside the classroom. One recommendation is that such frugal-science approaches are emphasized more in both pre-and in-service teacher education.

The concept of good character was popularized by Thomas Lickona by referring to the concept put forward by Aristotle as follows "the life of right conduct, right conduct in relation to another person and in relation to self", which means a life of good behavior/full of virtue is to behave well towards other parties (God Almighty, humans, and the universe) and towards oneself. There is one event that we can make an example of as a person with good character. Indonesia will become the fifth largest country in the world, so its people must be educated to contribute to the country and global civilization by having good character or values. The values that must be taught to society from an early age are discipline, polite, honest, simple, clean, good deeds, frugal, patient, and exemplary. The way to teach good character or values is through educational institutions, both formal and non-formal. The learning process in value education involves mixing good values that you want to instill, facilitating students to learn actively, and using learning models that empower students. In addition to having to exemplify these values, educators, both teachers and lecturers, must also have insight into the concepts used in facilitating the learning process, namely the sources of norms, noble values that need to be developed, learning approaches and strategies, and understanding of students. The estuary of values education is the creation of a conducive and democratic atmosphere for improving human resources who are religious and have an international outlook based on Indonesianness and Islam. so that the character of a nation that is cultured and has noble character is formed, and a civilized and noble national civilization is realized as a strong pillar of civilization.

The bamboo–wood composite container floor (BWCCF) has been wildly utilized in transportation in recent years. However, most of the common approaches of mechanics detection are conducted in a time-consuming and resource wasting way. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a frugal and highly efficient method to predict the short-span shear stress, the modulus of rupture (MOR) and the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the BWCCF. Artificial neural network (ANN) models were developed and support vector machine (SVM) models were constructed for comparative study by taking the characteristic parameters of image processing as input and the mechanical properties as output. The results show that the SVM models can output better values than the ANN models. In a prediction of the three mechanical properties by SVMs, the correlation coefficients (R) were determined as 0.899, 0.926, and 0.949, and the mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) were obtained, 6.983%, 5.873%, and 4.474%, respectively. The performance measures show the strong generalization of the SVM models. The discoveries in this work provide new perspectives on the study of mechanical properties of the BWCCF combining machine learning and image processing.

Smart parsimonious and economical ways of irrigation have build up to fulfill the sweet water requirements for the habitants of this world. In other words, water consumption should be frugal enough to save restricted sweet water resources. The major portion of water was wasted due to incompetent ways of irrigation. We utilized a smart approach professionally capable of using ontology to make 50% of the decision, and the other 50% of the decision relies on the sensor data values. The decision from the ontology and the sensor values collectively become the source of the final decision which is the result of a machine learning algorithm (KNN). Moreover, an edge server is introduced between the main IoT server and the GSM module. This method will not only avoid the overburden of the IoT server for data processing but also reduce the latency rate. This approach connects Internet of Things with a network of sensors to resourcefully trace all the data, analyze the data at the edge server, transfer only some particular data to the main IoT server to predict the watering requirements for a field of crops, and display the result by using an android application edge.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to draw on the author’s background testing resilience in “no fail” organisations at the heart of UK government. The paper outlines a lean approach to high-impact training for strategic leaders, achieved in the form of low-cost exercises and harnessed to build resilience by surfacing risks, engaging with options and modelling decision outcomes. Repeated rehearsal of crisis and risk management responses grows organisational resilience and human capacity and reduces reputational, legal, operational and other costs. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology employed scenario-driven exercises (SDEs) is described for the first time in the open literature. Findings – Approaches such as SDEs build strategic resilience through effective training and learning, focusing on the fundamental priorities of strategic delivery, reputation and crisis management through avoiding and reacting to challenging circumstances. Practical implications – By being targeted at probing and gaming participants’ taking of decisions and logic of analysing available information, the use of frugal SDEs can provide substantial value in organisations where robust testing is welcomed and its findings implemented. Originality/value – SDEs are described for the first time in the open literature.
