Texto completoThis thesis, presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Business Administration/Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Management, investigates the business models used by performing arts festivals known as "fringe festivals." In the United States, there are three basic fringe festival models: the open access or Edinburgh model, the limited access model, and the adjudicated model. Interviews with artists who participated in fringes as producers reveal that the model impacts the participant experience less than the degree of scaffolding the fringe offers and the degree to which the fringe constrains producing choices. This thesis suggests a fringe festival framework, classifying fringes by degree of scaffolding and constraint, which can be used by producers to identify festival settings that will be the best fit for their needs. The framework can also be used by fringe festival organizers as a tool for self-reflection and festival assessment.

The years from 2005-2010 brought two major events that shook the basic assumptions underlying housing delivery in the United States of America. First, Hurricane Katrina and the catastrophic flooding of New Orleans that followed brought into stark focus the folly of decades of short-sighted land use policy and housing development that largely ignored environmental vulnerabilities. Second, a massive foreclosure crisis exposed the economic flaws of a housing delivery system that relies on reckless and unsustainable mortgage lending and borrowing to drive the construction and purchase of oversized, inefficient homes on the periphery of the suburban fringe. This thesis proposes a new model for high-density, low-rise urban housing that provides an environmentally responsive infrastructural framework upon which homeowners can readily expand to suit their needs and desires. Such an incremental approach provides for more economically and environmentally efficient housing while encouraging formal and spatial diversity in the urban experience.

Texto completoIn the past 15 years, there has been a worldwide proliferation of arts festivals, including so-called "fringe" festivals, which encouraged more experimental and avant-garde productions. While fringe festival productions had the potential to generate significant income for producers, their aims were primarily related to artistic innovation and it is well known that putting on a fringe show is highly unlikely to provide financial gain for most producers. This is what is referred to in statistics and marketing as a "long tail" distribution, in which a minority of producers in a particular market earn the vast majority of industry income. However, for individual producers of live theatre, such a distribution represents high risks and potentially large financial losses. This article uses producer data from two different fringe festivals in South Africa to explore determinants of ticket sales and box-office income. Included in the analysis is a consideration of the impact of genre and pricing strategies on the probability (Logit model) of shows being in the top 10%, 30% and 50% of best-selling and earning productions. Results support the long tail hypothesis.

This thesis has sought to construct a diagnostic study of small downtown revitalization in Somersworth, New Hampshire, and Berwick, Maine. To develop a holistic understanding of downtown revitalization in Somersworth-Berwick, and other such small towns on the urban fringe, this research was divided into three broad parts: [1] local contextualization of Somersworth-Berwick and empirical studies of small town revitalization, [2] a local market analysis, and [3] a site plan and financial feasibility model. The methods used to complete this research included focused interviews, market analysis, and financial modeling. These methods are coupled with a review of literature and sought to answer what potential market-based downtown revitalization strategies are and how economically and financially viable these might be in the context of Somersworth-Berwick. While this thesis has fashioned a robust framework specifically in the context of Somersworth-Berwick's downtown revitalization, its methodological approach and findings are applicable for similar small and fringe communities. The findings of this thesis highlight that market-based revitalization efforts, such as catalytic real estate development, do hold promise in advancing revitalization efforts yet often require subsidy in the face of weak real estate markets and market failure. As such, broad-based and non-traditional revitalization efforts are key elements to a holistic and effective downtown revitalization plan.

Numerous authors have noted that the patchy, sprawling pattern of development characterizing the metropolitan fringe results in part from the decisions of individual landowners regarding the use, subdivision, development, sale, or transfer of land. These decisions are related to owners' interests in their land: the set of benefits, derived from ownership, that enhance owners' physical, financial, or emotional well-being. In this dissertation, I develop a framework for exploring landowners' interests in their fringe properties. The framework proposes a set of interests owners might hold in land, explains how they are influenced by personal and external circumstances, and discusses how interests shift over time. In developing this framework, I draw from research on landowners' roles in land conversion and Marxist scholarship on "exchange" and "use" values in urban land. The framework also emerged from research conducted in the Austin, Texas fringe, involving a telephone survey of over 500 landowners, interviews with owners and experts on the region's growth, and a field visit.
(cont.) The study reveals that Austin-area owners are a diverse group whose land interests relate to monetary gain, the use of land for residence or business, and emotional satisfaction from the enjoyment of resources or activities on their property; and that individual and family owners typically hold multiple interests in their land at any given time. However, the study also identifies general "orientations" toward agriculture, enjoyment, and investment, which, with other key variables (including residency, parcel size, tenure, and location), may be associated with specific behaviors including use, sales, purchases, and transfers to children. The research also reveals that, over time, personal and external factors (such as intensifying development pressures) may serve some interests but be deleterious to others, complicating owners' decision-making, but explaining why some elect not to sell land despite potential profits, and why, over the course of ownership, individual landowners may play multiple roles in land conversion, contributing to the uneven nature of fringe growth. For planners and policymakers, the dominance of individual and family owners, their interests, and the stories of their histories with their land can inform efforts to encourage alternative forms of development.

25 years after India initiated its landmark reforms for economic liberalization, it continues to be challenged in balancing rapid economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability. As the world seeks ways to curtail emissions ahead of a critical juncture in climate change, India's choice - representing 17.5% of humanity, of a growth-propelled, market-led development pathway has the potential to offset global efforts with irreversible consequences. Kalinganagar, located in the resource rich northeastern peninsular belt, is a paradigmatic case of neoliberal industrial urbanism. Here, the demand for commodities and resources from a burgeoning, globalized, aspiring middle class subordinates communities depending on natural environments within their localities for livelihood security and most material needs. Habitats of its indigenous populations, once marginalized rural hinterlands, are now sites of multilateral contestations as neoliberal policies and governance enable their transformation into geographies of extraction. The ensuing severance of linkages between communities and their landscape results in the loss of a critical interest group in the preservation of natural ecologies. In an impasse between fallacious optimism and cynical pessimism, the thesis explores the synergetic prospects of grassroots governance and liberal capitalism, for a rurban model of regional development. An alternative method for locking a second-harmonic generation (SHG) cavity on resonance is described and implemented. The usual method, Pound-Drever-Hall locking, is prone to long-term power fluctuations from power variations in the incident laser. When using the second harmonic field for squeezing, these power fluctuations need to be stabilized with an additional control loop (usually a Mach-Zender interferometer). The alternative method, side-fringe locking, involves a simple DC offset on the second-harmonic signal at the desired power to generate the error signal. This thesis demonstrates the insensitivity of side-fringe locking to such long-term power fluctuations and that the noise spectrum is comparable to PDH locking-explained largely due to PZT noise length fluctuations off-resonance..
