Resumen
In November 2012, Barack Obama was re-elected as President of the United States. Meanwhile, I was 3,000 miles across the Atlantic living and studying in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The re-election of Barack Obama became significant because of its insignificance in my life. It felt at once distant and immanent. What I hope to recover in these cobbled-together moments of autoethnographic exploration is a sense of interconnectedness. North or South, German or American, Democrat or Republican, our civic and individual lives are indebted to the otherness of others. Indeed, borders are arbitrary.

Structural and dynamic analyses of a new machining fixture help Porsche AG get production up and running faster. Porsche contracted with KTW Konstruktion Technik K. Weisshaupt GmbH of Friedrichshafen, Germany, to design and produce the fixtures required to hold automobile motor parts in place during drilling and high-precision milling. It has been noted that using a 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) solid modeler can point out weaknesses before a design leaves the computer. In order to avoid the need for costly generations of prototypes prior to the casting process, Speedy Engineering in Immenstaad, Germany, used finite element analysis software to perform linear static and dynamic (vibration) analyses of the motor component fixture geometry within only a few days of its design, to determine displacements and eigenfrequencies of the geometry. The results of the static and dynamic analyses enabled Speedy to specify maximum working loads for •production, which guaranteed success with the first use of this fixture design.

Resumen
Background:District Energy (DE) is a technology capable of using renewable energy (e.g., solar thermal systems) and waste heat as energy sources efficiently. DE technology nonetheless has potential for improvement. Thermal Energy Storage (TES) can enhance DE performance significantly. Objective:An exergy analysis of a DE system which includes a solar thermal energy system and TES is performed, so as to improve understanding of its performance.Method:A case study based on the Friedrichshafen DE system in Germany is used to assess thermodynamically the role of solar energy and TES in a DE system. The system performance is separated into three modes: (1) fossil fuel is the only source of energy, (2) a discharging TES and fossil fuel provide heat for the DE system, and (3) solar energy and fossil fuels are the energy supplies. Exergy analyses are conducted for each performance mode and the overall DE system. Results:The results quantify the benefits of incorporating solar energy and TES on the performance of the Friedrichshafen DE system, and demonstrate that the overall exergy efficiency of the DE system increases from 23% to 27% with assistance of solar thermal collectors and TES, while the total energy efficiency increases from 83% to 87%.Conclusion:An increase of exergy efficiency is observed when TES is added to a DE system, due to a reduction in solar thermal energy loss by the TES, which allows more solar energy to be converted to useful energy to satisfy the DE system thermal energy demand.

Resumen
This article reviews how computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis provides an enhanced understanding of a low-emission combustion system. When AlliedSignal Engines in Phoenix wanted its ASE40 industrial gas turbine to meet tough new standards for nitrogen oxide emissions, the company decided to try a design that injected water into the combustion zone so the system would burn cooler. AlliedSignal combined full-scale engine tests and computer models to study the effect of water injection on the ASE40. CFD provided detailed flow field information not available from engine tests. This information allowed engineers to verify the effectiveness of the numerous design changes made in axial air swirlers, mixing jets, and cooling flows. Work is also in progress on a dual-fuel system with water injection, using the same gas/water manifold and combustor. Oil fuel will be introduced through the original water circuit, with water being introduced into the gas side. This system will be distributed for the European market by AlliedSignal’s partner, Motoren-und Turbinen-Union (MTU) of Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Resumen
Groundwater (GW) flooding mechanisms differ from river flooding, both spatially and temporally, and preventative methods against groundwater flooding must take this into account. Although groundwater flooding caused by a rise of river water seldom occurs, it can occasionally become severe and last for a long time if the river is significantly flooded. In the southwest portion of the research domain, Friedrichshafen, Germany, with a few urban communities, the level of the groundwater table was discovered to be roughly 1 m below the surface. In the study region, it is typical for the bottom level of the foundation of a single-story building to extend up to a depth of about 1.5 m. Therefore, flood mitigation methods are taken into account for the southwest portion of the study region. In this study, FEFLOW is used to explore the preventative methods for groundwater flooding caused by river water increase in urban settings, the spread of contamination, and the strategizing of effective mitigation solutions for flooding. The installation of a pumping well, drainage, and a barrier in the affected area are three different flood control strategies that are taken into consideration for the study area. Pumping well installation, reducing up to 1.5 m of hydraulic head, was found to be the most effective flood control measure locally in a small region. By contrast, removing groundwater by building drainage and barriers was shown to be ineffective for lowering the groundwater table over an extended region, and was significantly more expensive than the installation of wells. Additionally, when river flooding is taken into account, compared to the default scenario where no intake of water from the river is included along the western border of the study area, it was discovered that the spread of pollution (nitrate concentration) is significantly greater.

Resumen
This research is primarily focused on utilizing available airborne LiDAR data and spatial data from the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database to generate 3D models of buildings for a large-scale urban area. The city center of Ljubljana, Slovenia, was selected for the study area due to data availability and diversity of building shapes, heights, and functions, which presented a challenge for the automated generation of 3D models. To extract building heights, a range of data sources were utilized, including OSM attribute data, as well as georeferenced and classified point clouds and a digital elevation model (DEM) obtained from openly available LiDAR survey data of the Slovenian Environment Agency. A digital surface model (DSM) and digital terrain model (DTM) were derived from the processed LiDAR data. Building outlines and attributes were extracted from OSM and processed using QGIS. Spatial coverage of OSM data for buildings in the study area is excellent, whereas only 18% have attributes describing external appearance of the building and 6% describing roof type. LASTools software (rapidlasso GmbH, Friedrichshafener Straße 1, 82205 Gilching, GERMANY) was used to derive and assign building heights from 3D coordinates of the segmented point clouds. Various software options for procedural modeling were compared and Blender was selected due to the ability to process OSM data, availability of documentation, and low computing requirements. Using procedural modeling, a 3D model with level of detail (LOD) 1 was created fully automated. After analyzing roof types, a 3D model with LOD2 was created fully automated for 87.64% of buildings. For the remaining buildings, a comparison of procedural roof modeling and manual roof editing was performed. Finally, a visual comparison between the resulting 3D model and Google Earth’s model was performed. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the efficient modeling process using open data and free software and resulting in an enhanced accuracy of the 3D building models compared to previous LOD2 iterations.

Resumen
This paper presents results of a research project which is carried out at the Technical University Munich, Germany. In this project the “CVT-Hybrid-Driveline” is designed, manufactured and investigated in close cooperation with OEM (GM Powertrain Europe) and suppliers (EPCOS AG, ZF Friedrichshafen AG and ZF SACHS AG). The focus is put on reduction of fuel consumption at low additional cost for hybrid components. The “CVT-Hybrid-Driveline” is a hybrid car driveline using Diesel-engine, electric motor with double layer capacitors and a CVT-type transmission. The driveline is assembled into an OPEL VECTRA vehicle for investigations on practical use of this hybrid system. In addition the driveline is installed at test rig for detailed investigations on consumption, energy flow and control system behavior. The concept is presented and explained in this document. Based on simulation of the hybrid system the drivability is shown for various situations of driving; fuel consumption of the CVT-Hybrid is evaluated and discussed both for standard cycle and for specific driving course.

Resumen
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">With the law on autonomous driving and the associated ordinance, it has been possible in Germany since June 2022 to grant operating permission to vehicles with automated driving function and to admit them to road traffic. For public transport, automated shuttle buses offer the opportunity to maintain the existing service despite a shortage of personnel and to close gaps in supply. The safety of vehicle occupants, other road users and third parties is a key concern in the operation of automated shuttle buses.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">As part of the project RABus “Real laboratory for automated bus operation in public transport in urban and rural areas”, which is funded by the Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg, the operational reliability of automated shuttle buses (SAE Level 4) in public transport is being scientifically investigated.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In the implementation of automated driving, obstacle detection/avoidance is a safety-critical driving function. The number of possible scenarios in the real world is almost infinite, which makes the technical and systematic evaluation of automation function a challenge for developers, testers, and certification bodies of automated driving.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In this work, we present the state of the art in terms of obstacle detection and compares metrics for evaluating obstacle detection function. The technical evaluation of obstacle detection of a vehicle with automated driving function is shown using the example of the real labs in Friedrichshafen and Mannheim in the RABus project. For both cities, the infrastructural requirements in the operational design domain are surveyed. Current developments in the field of (international) standardization in the description of operational conditions/operational domains (including ASAM OpenODD) will be followed and evaluated for applicability.</div></div>
