Resumen
In order to compare the frictional resistance of three kinds of ship’s hull coatings (Foul Release, SPC copper, SPC TBT) in the unfouled conditions, the numerical studies have been made. Simulations have been carried out for different Reynolds numbers in the range of 2.85 × – 5.5 × based on the plate length and flow velocity. Antifouling coatings have a larger mean roughness than Foul Release. The results have indicated that frictional resistance coefficient of Foul Release test plate is lower than SPC copper and SPC TBT test plates. The total resistance obtained by computational fluid dynamics has been compared with the experimental data and good agreement in results has been found which those have shown the ability of CFD modeling in calculating of fluid flow resistance by considering the coating characteristics.

Resumen
The complex and inhomogeneous nature of sediments in sewers, and the variability of the particles and dissolved substances flowing in dry and wet weather combined sewage, make the prediction of sediment erosion and pollutant release a difficult proposition. It is apparent that the erosion of sediments in sewers can release pollutants in concentrations which exceed by many times the levels found in the various contributing sources of the sediments and pollutants, and whilst this release is normally in the form of an initial highly polluting foul flush at the start of wet weather flow, the occurrence of foul flushes has not been found to be ubiquitous, even from event to event in the same sewer. The origins of foul flushes may be attributable to the speedy erosion of a weak layer of highly concentrated surficial sediments (or bed-load) at the start of wet weather flows. Various models have been proposed, and some successfully applied to field data, to simulate the erosion and movement of sediments and associated pollutants in combined sewer systems.

Resumen
The feces and livestock wastewater is characterized with complicated and high level in pollutant and foul odor, great change with loading. Humus activated sludge process with anaerobic-intermittent aeration mode were adopted to treat feces and livestock wastewater complex. The design and operation result showed that the process could remove effectively high concentration organic matter, TN,TP and SS, no foul gas release in residual sludge and during operation, the system has strong tolerance to the high hydraulic load through adjusting aeration period and reflux ratio. The feces and livestock treatment in China can draw lessons from the Yongin feces and livestock wastewater complex treatment system in Korea

Kenny, Stephen. "In situ surface analysis of novel marine foul-release coatings". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/42564/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Exposure of artificial surfaces such as ship hulls to a marine environment leads to the attachment of assorted biomolecules, single celled organisms and marine invertebrates such as barnacles or mussels. Together, they form a structure known as a biofilm. These films lead to higher fuel consumption and add considerable expense to the operation of ships used by industrial and naval organisations. The work presented in this thesis describes the surface analysis of a novel poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) based foul-release coating. The coating also contains poly(ethylene glycol) groups (PEG). The differing chemical properties between these two domains led to an observed surface modification effect in water, whereby contact angle measurements decreased from ~110o to ~65 o over a period of five minutes. This effect was rapidly reversible on drying. Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry cryogenic depth profiling experiments confirmed this change in surface chemistry where the frozen surface of the coating was shown to have a higher intensity of ions associated with PEG groups at the surface compared to that in the bulk. Water immersion also led to a swelling of the surface seen by a change in the surface topography by Atomic Force Microscopy investigations. When applied to glass surfaces the coatings were flat and generally defect free regardless of the application method used. On exposure to Pseudomonas aeruginosa the coatings were found to be ten times more effective at preventing bacterial adhesion in the first instance than a PDMS standard. The mechanism of action was shown to be non-toxic by live/dead staining and did not appear to affect the way in which bacteria move on a surface. A flow adhesion assay demonstrated that a flow rate of almost two orders of magnitude lower was required to remove fifty percent of bacteria from a coated surface than on a glass standard, demonstrating the foul-release ability of the switching coating. Sea trials in a French coastal region highlighted the importance of exposing candidate coatings to a true marine environment for a suitable duration in order to determine their potential for use. Ultimately we show that the coating presented is a candidate for use as an effective coating for preventing marine biofouling and surface analysis was deemed to be an appropriate methodology to analyse coatings that have changing properties on exposure to water.

Resumen
Surfaces submerged in marine environments rapidly get colonized by marine organisms, a process known as biofouling. Fouling costs maritime industries billions of dollars annually. The most common methods of combating marine biofouling are toxin containing antifouling coatings which often have detrimental non-target environmental effects. These effects and proposed bans on harmful substances in antifouling coatings, mandates development of more environmentally friendly antifouling technologies. Of these, foul-release coatings, which minimize attachment and adhesion of fouling organisms (rather than killing them) are promising alternatives. Here I explored the utility of petroleum waxes as novel antifouling/foul-release coatings. I first investigated the responses of propagules (larvae or spores) of six common fouling organisms to wax coatings in the laboratory. A wide variation in the response of these different organisms, and in the different types of response (settlement, adhesion, etc.) by the same organism, was observed, but the most inhibitory coatings were those made from microcrystalline wax and silicone oil. However, in field trials in Sydney Harbour, paraffin waxes had the strongest antifouling performance, with activity up to one year (the trial duration). These waxes also had strong foul-release effects, with fouling that did attach mostly removed by a low pressure water jet. Composition of fouling communities on paraffin waxes differed significantly from other waxes or controls, with little or no hard fouling organisms (barnacles, bivalves) on paraffin. The mechanisms of antifouling and foul-release actions of paraffin waxes appear to be due to changes in surface properties. The surfaces of the paraffin waxes changed noticeably after 4 - 8 weeks immersion in the sea or in seawater aquaria. Antibiotic treatments showed that this change in surface appearance was due to biological (microbial) activity. Bacteria appear to remove the amorphous phase from the surface of the paraffin waxes, revealing an underlying crystalline phase, which is less affected by bacterial action. I suggest that these crystals form a microstructured ?bed of nails? of crystals of varying shapes and sizes which inhibit settlement and reduce adhesion strength of those organisms which do settle.

Resumen
Pennell’s chapter engages with the idea that objects acquire individual and social meaning partly because of the emotions that subjects attach to them, in the context of the often fragile hold that the eighteenth-century poor had on their goods and chattels. The poor might routinely pawn possessions or surrender them to distraint for debt, or for release from the sponging house or debtors’ prison. Pennell focuses in particular on the commonplace drama of distraint, increasingly visible across the eighteenth century following the 1689 Sale of Goods Distrained for Rent Act. Accounts suggest that those who fell foul of warrants for distraint often experienced suffering more because their home was violated than because of the loss of specific goods within it. This suggests a pragmatic view of possessions in which goods were regarded as stores of value, more than as objects of emotional investment.

Resumen
Bob Dylan has constantly reinvented the persona known as “Bob Dylan,” renewing the performance possibilities inherent in his songs, from acoustic folk, to electric rock and a late, hybrid style which even hints at so-called world music and Latin American tones. Then in 2016, his achievements outside of performance – as a songwriter – were acknowledged when he was awarded the Nobel Literature Prize. Dylan has never ceased to broaden the range of his creative identity, taking in painting, film, acting and prose writing, as well as advertising and even own-brand commercial production. The book highlights how Dylan has brought his persona(e) to different art forms and cultural arenas, and how they in turn have also created these personae. This volume consists of multidisciplinary essays written by cultural historians, musicologists, literary academics and film experts, including contributions by critics Christopher Ricks and Nina Goss. Together, the essays reveal Dylan’s continuing artistic development and self-fashioning, as well as the making of a certain legitimized Dylan through critical and public recognition in the new millennium. This volume seeks to reflect the range of Bob Dylan’s multiple activities, the ‘late style’ of his creativity and his personae in all their later variety, from the Time Out of Mind album (1997) up to the release in March 2020 of ‘Murder Most Foul’. Bob Dylan (born 1941) is perhaps best-known as a singer and songwriter whose major impact occurred several decades ago. His achievements as a songwriter and master of language were – provocatively? – acknowledged when he was awarded the 2016 Nobel Literature Prize. However, Dylan has never ceased to broaden the range of his creative identity, especially through intermediality, taking in painting, film, acting, radio-presenting and prose writing, as well as advertising and even own-brand commercial production, either reinforcing or calling into question his perceived authenticity. The book highlights how Dylan has brought his persona(e) to different art forms and cultural arenas, and how they in turn have also created these personae. Chronicles, Volume One, his autobiography, charts his beginnings as a folk singer and the later recording of the Oh Mercy album. In terms of his identity as a visual artist, while Dylan’s Revisionist Art exhibition focused on his reworkings of magazine covers, the Brazil Series paintings show him extending his visual creativity to cultural spaces beyond the United States. Dylan has constantly reinvented the persona known as ‘Bob Dylan’.
