Wang, Fangfang. "Le port de Shanghai, porte maritime de la Chine, 1843-1912". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023SORUL054.

Texto completo
This thesis focuses on the development of the Shanghai port from 1843 to 1912, with a particular emphasis on the history of foreign enterprises established in Shanghai during this period. At a time when China is promoting its Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at expanding its global influence by assisting participating countries in developing their public infrastructure, including ports, it is interesting to reexamine the history of the development of the Shanghai port during the concession period. The foreign concessions in Shanghai and the private enterprises established there between 1843 and 1912 played a crucial role in the construction of the port, which later became a development model for other Chinese port cities. The city of Shanghai as we know it today has its foundations in this period. This thesis seeks to demonstrate how the commercial competition among foreign enterprises in Shanghai drove the development of its port. It explores the historical context, key stages of port construction, planning and management, as well as Western imperialism and the emergence of Chinese national consciousness

Resumen
Shanghaiis one of the cities that are often considered to be have lost identity in globalization. Importing foreign architecture since 1978 is believed by some experts a key causal factor. According to the critical regionalism identifying typical lifestyle patterns like cooking can be a starting point to find a city identity ofShanghai. This essay is aimed at testing this method. It is approached by learning how cooking influences on architecture (building, street and urban fabric) in ancient, modern, and contemporary times through three relations: cooking and kitchen, kitchen and façade, kitchen and street/urban fabric.   The initial hypotheses of this master thesis were that first importing of foreign architecture causesShanghailost identity; second foreign architecture especially residential buildings are hard to adapt to local life without understanding lifestyle; and third cooking as a typical lifestyle pattern can helpShanghaifind her character. However, research results show that technique today can offset most of the constraints brought by traditional cooking. Thus, the conclusion of this paper is that influence of cooking on architecture is limited, and to find urban identity should depend on architects’ and stakeholders’ awareness.

Resumen
During the 1860s, Chinese merchants reestablished their commercial organizations which are recorded as Guilds (hanghui) in the sources compiled under the guidance of the Qing local government officials. From the decade until the end of the 1880s, English sources emphasized the solidarity of the commercial organizations of Chinese merchants and their superiority to the British mercantile community in the commercial conflicts in which they were engaged. However, from the 1890s, English sources ceased to complain the strength of the commercial organizations of Chinese merchants, and, at the same time, Chinese sources emphasized the existence of a crisis in which Chinese merchants were losing their solidarity. Moreover, the Qing local government officials endeavoured to maintain their control over the commercial organizations of Chinese merchants, an attempt which led to the birth of Chinese chambers of commerce in the early twentieth century. Former studies, which dealt with the superiority of the Chinese merchants' organizations to the British mercantile firms in the 1860s and the 1870s, or the birth of the Chinese bourgeoisie and the activities of their commercial organizations in the early twentieth century, have not been able to reveal what happened in the commercial organizations of the Chinese merchants during the late nineteenth century. The solidarity of the Chinese merchant organizations was maintained by the rule that no one could claim the privilege of doing business without paying the Lijin tax imposed upon it, and the collapse of their solidarity began with when some Chinese compradors and merchants found it possible to do their business without keeping this rule by means of cooperating British mercantile firms, who enjoyed key privi- leges under the Treaties as regards non-payment of the Lijin tax and investment on the basis of limited liability. By intensively analyzing three commercial conflicts between prominent Chinese merchant organizations and British mercantile firms that took place in Shanghai between the end of the 1870s and the end of the 1880s, this study reveals how, and under what conditions some Chinese compradors and merchants could do their business without observing the afore-mentioned rule governing the Chinese merchants' organizations, what happened when British mercantile people became aware what their compradors or cooperative Chinese merchants had doing behind their back, and how these developments contributed to the end of the old-style merchant class, and the beginning of a bourgeoisie. By bringing these facts to the surface for analysis, this study shows a little known aspect of the Chinese society and tries on the basis to re-evaluate an aspect of concept of "China's response to the Western impact."

Resumen
The purpose of the research conducted is to investigate the effects of local managers' education and training on corporate culture in foreign companies in the People's Republic of China. In order to realise the purpose, the project sets up three corresponding aims. First, an examination of corporate values and the corresponding cross-cultural issues in Western companies in a Chinese context is given. Second, a prescription of various adaptation forms of these companies is provided. Finally, the effects of the training on the corporate culture are evaluated and presented. The study employs a qualitative methodology for the exploration. Foreign companies covering the main fields of business activities in China were selected with an emphasis on the two countries: the United Kingdom and the United States. Thirty participants from those sample companies were interviewed face-to-face with semi-structured questions. The fieldwork was carried out mainly in Shanghai, which is the biggest city and an economic zone in China. At the same time, documentation was used as a complementary method in terms of providing relevant information. Data were also collected from two Asian foreign enterprises in China for benchmark. Final results in light of the research purpose and aims indicate that a foreign company in China, which is internationally accepted, is likely to apply a corporate culture that accommodates both similarities and differences between the local culture and the original culture of the foreign parent company. Such a corporate culture is not judged by its form, for it is neither a typical culture of a Western organisation nor typical one of a Chinese enterprise. It allows the corporation to keep international standards and simultaneously be capable of cultivating local managers to accept it emotionally. In this sense, local managers' education and training need to be perceived as a cultural process and delivered in a flexible way. The effects of the training upon the corporate culture are identified.

Wei, Xiaoying. "The Effects of the Flipped Classroom Model on Students' Learning in a College English Class in Shanghai, China". Scholarly Commons, 2019. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/3647.

Resumen
For many decades, college English teaching in China has been teacher-centered, mainly focusing on the enhancement of students’ four basic English language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with little attention paid to the cultivation of students’ higher order thinking skills (Tang, 2016; Wang, Xu, & Zhou, 2016). The teacher-centered teaching approach has led to the problem that after having learned English for many years, students cannot speak English fluently (Dai, 2001). There has been a call for promoting the student-centered teaching model in China (NACFLT, 2000). One relatively new approach to support student-centered active learning is flipped instruction (Egbert et al., 2015). In a flipped classroom, the transmission of information in a traditional face-to-face class is moved out of class time, and the class time is devoted to engaging students in active learning to foster deeper understanding of course content and problem-solving skills. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the effects of the flipped classroom model on the learning of Chinese undergraduate students in a college English class. Using a purposeful sampling strategy, I selected a flipped English class in a private college in Shanghai, China, which can be regarded as a pioneer in promoting the flipped classroom model in China. I identified six second-year college students to be my respondents. During the six weeks of study in the fall semester of 2019, I collected data from multiple sources including one individual semi-structured open-ended interview with the instructor and each of the student participants, classroom observation, and documentation such as the teacher’s teaching plans, students’ journal entries, course projects, word maps and worksheets (both online or written ones). With a holistic analysis of the data collected, I explored students’ perceptions of the learning experiences in the flipped college English class, which lent an insight into the effects of the flipped classroom model on students’ learning. This study found that the teacher partly flipped her English class. Most of the learning of vocabulary and grammar was moved out of class. The learning of the articles in the textbook was partly flipped, with the initial understanding of the article done before class and the in-depth text analysis carried out in class. In class time, the teacher created an active learning environment with a variety of activities, encouraging students to think and speak English. The flipped learning tasks prepared students for the active learning in class, and the post-class learning tasks engaged students in further learning and thinking. All the six students regarded the teaching model as “original” and “helpful”. They perceived improved learning in the active learning environment in class. In addition, they perceived enhanced autonomy in learning, improvement in their English listening and speaking proficiency, and opportunities for cultivating higher order thinking skills. However, they were also faced with challenges in learning which they attributed to their low proficiency level of English listening and speaking. There was one outlier who preferred the traditional way of teaching and learning English, though he acknowledged the value of the teaching model adopted in this partly flipped English class.

Chabaille, Fleur.

This thesis aims to further clarify the territorial deployment of foreign settlements in China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although the period examined extends from 1846 to the retrocession of the last concessions in 1946, special emphasis is placed on the 1910s, a decade which spelled the end of expansionist logic. The first part analyzes the project of expansion led by the French Municipality of Tianjin from 1902 to 1946 in the Laoxikai District 老西開. This symbolic example serves both as pillar and springboard for writing a connected history of the expansion of foreign settlements. The case study on Tianjin provides a clearer analysis that encompasses Shanghai and Hankou in the second part. Establishing a perspective on the three cities reveals the principles and conditions under which foreign imperialism evolved in China, where mutually competing forces played leading roles. Further, it captures and illustrates the mechanisms of exchange and compromise engaged with Chinese officials and urban citizens. It also discloses the difficult position and weakness of the Chinese State before and after the 1911 Revolution, and the complexity of the relationship between national and local authorities. Finally, it offers a unique vantage point from which to observe sections of Chinese society within the treaty ports whose forms of expression and protest experienced a significant turning point in the 1910s. Relationships between these intertwined evolutions challenge both the dominant historiographical narrative on Western triumphant imperialism and orthodox representations associated with Chinese "modern" nationalism

The thesis concentrated on studying Shanghai’s transformation of industrial and business environment since 1990. Here, the researcher used China''s entry into the WTO as the demarcation in this research. Moreover, the research reviewed major policies and foreign investors’ arrangements in Shanghai, and then applied the “PEST” model to foreigners’ commentaries about Shanghai business environment. By casting correlative data, the researcher found that “human governing” in bureaucracy, a risk would not be estimated, probably played the most important role in foreign investment environment. According to this finding, the researcher argued that the innovation would help the investors to decrease the risk.

Resumen
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) first came into being as a result of border negotiations between Russia and China but evolved shortly thereafter into more than this. A regional organization comprised of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and China the SCO’s mandate now encompasses trade and security. Most secondary literature on this organization tends to detail the interests of its constituent members, while overlooking the historical relationships underlying the SCO’s growth and evolution. This thesis argues that Russia’s long-standing relationships with the states of Central Asia created the conditions making the SCO a necessary tool of Russian foreign policy, while Moscow’s relations with China and the US have driven the development of the group. It concludes that the SCO has become the most viable of Central Asia’s regional organizations because it has effectively resolved contradictions and conflicts in Russia’s relationships with the other SCO members.

Abstract Organization and system can be used to connect the network relationship for the doers at various levels, which both imply the way and result that will affect the acquisition and utilization of resources of the doers. That is to say, they both imply the specific stake mode related to the political and economic characteristics of each doer, this mode can be abbreviated as the Bias. The Bias of a good or more feasible organization and system shall be able to match up with the internal and external political and economic power system as well as the rationalized direction of politics and economy, otherwise the relevant politics and economy shall be adjusted. (Shiau, Chyuan-Jeng, Mar. 1997, The National Chi Nan University Journal) This study focuses on “The Shanghai Cooperation Organization” (SCO), a permanent intergovernmental international and the first multi-lateral cooperation organization. Named after “Shanghai”city. The SCO was proclaimed in Shanghai in the early twentieth century consisting mainly of six countries-People’s Republic of China, Russian Federation, Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Tajikistan and Republic of Uzbekistan. It was established on the basis of the "Shanghai Five" mechanism. Except for Uzbekistan, the other countries had been members of the Shanghai Five; after the inclusion of Uzbekistan in 2001, the members renamed the organization. Its member states cover an area of over 30 million km2, or about three fifths of Eurasia, with a population of 1.455 billion, about a quarter of the world''s total. The SCO accepted Mongolia, India, Pakistan and Iran as observers. From Shanghai Five to the establishment of the SCO, the implied political and economic characteristics, the “Bias Mobilization”, has associated with the China diplomacy to some degrees. The People’s Republic of China, established in 1949, ranging from Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping to Jiang Zemin, has proposed ''Three World'' Theory”, “Reformation and Opening-up”, “Peace and Development” and “Multi-faceted Diplomacy”. Besides, under the national development strategy of “Rise in Peace”, Mainland China has shaped the “Peace, Cooperation, and Development” foreign strategy. This transition reveals Mainland China made “Mobilization of bias” with regard to its change of situation in different periods. Mainland China is aggressively participating and joining the operation of international or regional organizations, and leading to establish different kinds of regional cooperative organization. The said organization shall be one of tools for Mainland China to object the hegemony, regional despot, break out the encirclement of the United States and European countries, and challenge the unilateralism of the United States as well as contend the hegemony with the United States. Whether the foreign strategy of Mainland China is effective or not, especially the strategic objective of “Stabilizing the Northeast, Progressing to the Southwest”, will depend on whether the operation of this organization is successful or not, which is one of the evaluation indexes. The framework of this study is based on three parts: the historical level, organizational level, systematic level. Under this framework, we try to analyze the establishment, operation, change process of the SCO and "Shanghai Five"; meanwhile, this study also examines whether the “Mobilization of bias” of the SCO is in correspondence to the Mainland China foreign strategy. Studies show that the SCO has an important position in geo-economics, energy and security, of which the establishment, operation, and the adjustment of cooperative topics, items, contents of the relevant system of the SCO is compatible with foreign strategic demand of Mainland China at different periods. It also shows the “Mobilization of bias” of its predominating in the establishment, operation and change of said organization. As regards the history of the SCO development, from strengthening mutual trust and good-neighborly relations in military and international security to promoting their effective cooperation in political affairs, economy and trade, scientific-technical, cultural, and educational spheres as well as in energy, transportation, and environment protection fields; Mainland China will continue to strengthen the cooperation in aspects such as politics, economics, security, energy and anti-terrorism. In the meanwhile, it will also take a further step to recruit more members to join this organization, to enhance the cooperation and relation with other international or regional organizations, and to reduce the degree of dependence of countries in Central Asia and in Mainland China border regions dominant to the west head of the United States to accord with its foreign statement opposing local despots, reach its goal to dominate in local area, and then reach its wild ambition of contending for hegemony with the western big countries, such as the United States, European countries etc.

Since 1978, China has adopted the so-called “open door policy”, attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) has become one of the most important methods to facilitate its economic growth. However, foreign countries didn’t invest large amount toward China until Deng Xiaoping’s southern trip in 1992. The purpose of this study is thus to investigate the determinants of FDI from different foreign countries to different regions in China after foreign countries started to invest tremendous amount toward China. This study adopts fixed-effect model and random-effect model to investigate the determinants of FDI in China with panel data of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong during the period of 1993-2003. The result shows relative wage rate, trade dependence to China, relative exchange rate and relative borrowing cost are the most important factors in attracting FDI in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong during 1993-2003. Finally, in order to reduce the mistakes occurred in positive models and enable the study more rigorous, then uses more methods to test the models and the result.

Taiwanese catering industry has a long-term investment boom in China. Many successful companies have made Taiwanese catering industry eager to try. In addition to the advantages of the same language in China, China also has a vast domestic demand market. It is the kinetic energy that companies can continue to grow in the future. Therefore, caterer operators must understand what important factors affect their entering foreign markets. If the catering industry is able to grasp the importance of the factors that influence the entering foreign markets., it can be allocated to the best resources to increase the chances of success. This study uses eclectic theory as the basis of research theory to explore the analysis of factors in the foreign market of catering industry investment. In the case of Shanghai, through the literature to explore the construction of 3X3 level factor table, the target layer is three levels: ownership advantage, location market advantage and enterprise Internalization advantages, there are 27 factors in the target layer and the criteria layer at the three levels. Then the design expert questionnaire is sent to the senior director of the Taiwanese catering industry in Shanghai. After the questionnaire is collected, all the aspects are calculated by the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process method (FAHP). The weights of the influencing factors are sorted, and six key success factors are identified by the concept of acceptable advantages in the VIKOR: Corporate Capital, Patent Utility, Transaction Cost control, Risk Taking, Product Differentiation Capabilities and Industrial Experience. After six items are analyzed and proposed, the conclusions will be discussed in depth from the academic and practical perspectives. The results of this study provide an important reference for decision makers to entering foreign markets.

The purpose of this thesis is to make a comparative study between Swedish and Taiwanese foreign investments in China. Two variables that will be investigated are the influence of government policy and the role of business intermediaries. These factors play an important part in deciding the investment mode, whether it is direct investment or the establishment of an offshore company, of Swedish and Taiwanese corporations. The Swedish law and governmental policy impose few restrictions on Swedish private investments in foreign countries. Hence, the major concern related to the investments of Swedish corporations is mostly related to profit margins, e.g. if cost optimization can be achieved by moving some of the operations abroad. In addition to the non-restrictive investment regulations, Swedish corporations can also benefit from the assistance of Exportradet, a semi-governmental business agency, working in the aim of strengthening Swedish investments abroad. Taiwan in contrast to Sweden employs a restrictive cross-strait investment policy. For example Taiwanese direct investments to China are limited to one million USD. Similar to Exportradet, there are also business intermediaries, Taiwanese Chamber of commerce, representing Taiwanese business interests in China. Due to the different regulative standards employed by Sweden and Taiwan, this study will closer investigate how the regulatory environment affects the investment strategies of Swedish and Taiwanese corporations. The second area of interest resides in how the business intermediaries of two countries facilitate business development in China. For the purpose mentioned above, this thesis uses a qualitative research methodology. Data has been collected through interviews as well as secondary sources. The study is limited to the analysis of government policy (in Sweden, Taiwan as well as China) and the role of the business intermediaries (Exportradet and Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce) on the investment behavior of Swedish and Taiwanese corporations in China.

The two main purposes of this thesis are 1)to compare the differences of competitive strategies between state-owned department stores and foreign- invested department stores in Shanghai, and 2)to find out the factors of the differences in competitive strategies. According to comparetive analysis, this thesis finds the following three conclusions : 1. Shanghai state-owned department stores''competitive strategy is to adopt the cost-focus strategy. 2. The competitive strategy of Shanghai foreign- invested department stores is to use the differ- entiation-focus strategy. 3. The development experiences of each individual home country is one of the main factors in influencing what type of competitive strategies department stores choose to adopt.

The real estate has become a burgeoning industry in Shanghai since the Mainland deceased leader Deng Xiao-ping made his remarkable inspection tour of the South in 1992. Due to the fast growing market and desirable profit, uncountable foreign capital has flowed into the real estate industry of Shanghai. Housing prices have soared and already drew the attention of the authorities, which causes the restraint on real estate investment. Does foreign capital matter to real estate prices? What economic factors cause the movement of real estate prices? The purposes of this paper are to investigate the relationship between foreign direct investment and real estate prices of Shanghai. The empirical result shows: FDI, CPI, interest rate, exchange rate and income have significant positive effects on real estate prices in the long run. Nevertheless, stock market has significant negative effect. In the short run, however, FDI, interest rate, income and housing price itself have significant positive effects on real estate prices. In addition, overall CPI has no effect on real estate prices while some individual months of CPI have negative effect; exchange rate and stock market also have no effect on real estate prices in general. Furthermore, the policy of restraining foreign capital on real estate investment does not induce declining housing prices. To sum up, exchange rate is the main reason that affects real estate prices of Shanghai. FDI is not the “chief criminal” nor a scapegoat, neither. Penalizing the foreign capital is simply a warning from the Mainland government to seize the “hot money” in the real estate market.

"The French in Shanghai: a study of cosmopolitan culture under the predominance of Anglo-American globalization". Thesis, 2010. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6074871.

Resumen
Globalization and transnationalism make us homogenized and heterogenized at the same time. This research looks into the social interactions of the French with other nationalities, and goes beyond the daily life in Shanghai to investigate the transnational connections with France. Based on interviews and participant observation for 12 months in 2006, this research finds that the majority of the French expatriates in Shanghai develop a cosmopolitan culture which incorporates the consumption of exotic cultural products of the Other---Asian antiques, furniture, Chinese materials which are not for decoration, reading French literature including that on the exotic Asia, learning Chinese and English language, speaking English, mobility, and French lifestyle. However, they are not cosmopolitan in terms of social network.
Globalization has witnessed the wide-spread adoption of English language and Anglo-American culture. Today the French, a previous world power, are still trying to promote the radiance of French haute culture. This research adds to the study of cultural imperialism and also contributes to the anthropological study of foreign communities in China, by linking cosmopolitanism, globalization, and transnationalism.
This research asks whether the French expatriates residing in Shanghai are cosmopolitan. Do the French retain the basic elements of their culture of origin within a mostly exclusive French community? Or, due to the nature of the globalized corporate world to which they belong, do they develop a community as part of an international cosmopolitan one with its own cultural norms and patterns of behavior?

As an important engine of China''s economic growth, foreign trade has played an important role in the rapid development of our economy since the implementation of the policy of reform and opening to the outside world in 1978. According to the National Bureau of statistics, in 1980 the total import and export 57 billion yuan, and in 2017 has risen to 277921 yuan, an increase of up to 487 times, and in 2017 827122 of GDP billion yuan, compared with 1980 of 454 billion 562 million yuan an increase of 182 times. Although the total import and export volume and GDP both have a relatively high growth rate, the growth rate of GDP is far less than that of the total import and export volume. This shows that foreign trade plays an important role in the rapid development of China''s economy. Since the "15" held since the country gradually to private enterprises gradually liberalization of foreign trade rights, in 1978 compared to the beginning of reform and opening, private enterprises import and export volume accounted for the proportion of China''s total import and export from 38.5% in 2017 to negligible, showing the strong vitality of the private foreign trade enterprises. Although the development achievements of China''s foreign trade economy is striking, but in fact the global economy since the 2008 financial crisis, the growth rate has slowed down, which led to trade protectionism in some countries has been strong, regarding the abuse of anti-dumping and anti subsidy investigation events continue to increase, coupled with raw materials and labor costs, RMB appreciation and other unfavorable factors, development private foreign trade enterprises in China have encountered some obstacles and difficulties. In addition, the global value chain has been gradually forming, but because the majority of enterprises in China is mainly responsible for the role of the manufacturers, the OEM production, resulting in only Chinese enterprises can obtain value-added income is very low, and high added value part is often in the value chain of transnational enterprises to easily obtain, not only that, Chinese enterprises are often foreign enterprises to squeeze profits, this kind of situation in China''s foreign trade enterprises profit has shrunk dramatically that it can not meet the needs of sustainable development of enterprises, foreign trade enterprises appeared to survive the difficult situation. Therefore, China''s foreign trade enterprises must seek better opportunities for survival and development through the method of transformation and upgrading. Foreign trade is an important part of China''s economy and plays a key role in China''s economic development. Therefore, it is necessary for our government and enterprises to make efforts for their sustainable and healthy development. Since there are many unfavorable factors at this stage of the international trade market environment, China''s foreign trade enterprises have encountered many obstacles and difficulties in the process of operation, so it is necessary to select the direction of the transformation and method of foreign trade enterprises in-depth research, to promote the smooth and safe transition target enterprises. This article takes Shanghai Han you limited company as an example, by analyzing the current situation of business development environment and combining with the conditions of enterprises, we find ways and means of transformation and upgrading based on global value chain, so as to provide new solutions for healthy transformation of foreign trade enterprises.
