Texto completoHegel’s Jugendschriften represent a privileged way in the understanding of the whole Hegelian speculative system. Many critics have considered them for a long time as juvenile papers dense of romantic and mystical afflatus, destined to be substantially abandoned in the speculative-rational works of his maturity. This research aims at illustrating the development of the fundamental axis of Hegel’s thought in the philosopher’s early writings. From this recognition emerges the systematic role of the investigation into the religious form, perceived above all in the abolishment (Aufhebung) of the spirit of the Law in the law of the Spirit and in its preserving. With regard to this hermeneutical assumption, the research examines analytically the dialectical relationship between law and love, the Letter/Spirit contrast, the concept of destiny, the notion of positivity, the eschatological meaning of time, the project of a new religious vitality for his epoch. This study aims at enlightening the connection of these figures and, above all, of the categories of law and love, which constitute the basis for the elaboration of the dialectics, with the theological background of Paul’s Epistles, which Hegel had studied during his education in Stuttgart, Tubingen and Frankfurt.

Texto completoThe dissertation provides an in-depth analysis of the scholarship of Stanley Hauerwas, a very prominent figure in the American academy whose body of work is widely read in many countries. By providing a close reading of Hauerwas’ entire corpus, the dissertation aims at discussing the contested relationship between Christianity and liberalism. It does so first, by focusing on the philosophical presuppositions that shape Hauerwas’ overall argument. Second, it reflects on the main liberal commitments and institutions and their relationship with Christianity. Third, it describes Hauerwas’ ethical proposal and its bearings on the political commitments that the church and Christians ought to have. Following the breadth of Hauerwas’ work, the dissertation deals with a great number of philosophers, political theorists, and theologians, spanning from the writings of Aristotle and Aquinas, to the philosophy of language of McCabe, Murdoch, and Wittgenstein, to the ethical reflections of Kovesi, Anscombe and MacIntyre, and to the political theory of Rawls, Stout, and Coles. Through his stress on the role of virtues and moral formation, and by emphasizing the importance that the church’s tradition, language, and practices have in shaping the imagination and lives of Christians, Hauerwas gives a constructive and fruitful description of what a genuine Christian politics looks like and helps us navigate the complex world of today.

William James e Carl Stumpf. A scientific and human relationship through the letters As mentioned clearly in the title of this dissertetion, the subject of our research is the scientific and human relationship that William James and Carl Stumpf developed over the years. Right after their meeting in Prague, they went on their communication almost entirely in epistolary form. For this reason it was also curicial to examine the chronological perspective of their communication, as well as taking the most interesting and important aspects of their humanistic and intellectual biographies into account. For this aim we used the letters of James to Stumpf - almost fully published - as well as those from Stumpf to James. Since the letters from Stumpf were only partially published, the bibliographical material had a certain scarcity. Therefore, we used the handwritten form of stumpfian letters (preserved in the library of the Harvard University, and granted in consultation), which are fully transcribed and annotated in the critical Appendix at the end of this dissertation. In this paper we preferred to publish all the handwritten form of Stumpfs letters – not only a partial selection from those – because we consider the whole correspondence as a privileged tool to study and understand the relationship between James-Stumpf. In order to help the reader to recognize the many levels of meaning arisen from this relationship, we have also integrated and included in the critical Appendix a summary of James’s responses. In this doctoral work through three chapters, where we have referred to the original papers, it can be recognized, how the relationship between James-Stumpf progressed from many different aspects through the years. Aim of this work is not only to emphasize the system of scientific and intellectual similarities and differences between James and Stumpf; on the contrary we underline and visualize different levels of meaning arisen from this relationship. However, it is possible to find these both elements in their communication: from one hand, the compatibilty and a shared theoretical trend, on the other hand the signs of a conflict, which are sometimes more, sometimes less radical. From this point of view it should be also noted that, while the correspondence is an essential and important context of study in this relationship, it was necessary in some cases to take some of their central works into account, and therefore it leaded to an unavoidable selection of the topics treated. Under these circumstances, it must be pointed out that we don’t aim a complete examination of James’s and/or Stumpf’s thoughts, but mainly a development of their relationship, starting from some emblamatic and significant issues, which can be directly found in their correspondence.

Texto completoThe aim of the present work is to investigate the hermeneutical perspective developed by the Belgian scholar Julien Ries, founder of a discipline known as religious or symbolic anthropology. Irreducible to history of religions, phenomenology or to hermeneutic, it is rather a synthesis of them, in which converge different methods and approaches. The result of this virtuous integration is a humanistic discipline that clarifies the fundamental structures of homo religiosus, as an essential category of religiosus anthropology. In this work we studied the theoretical structures which innervate Ries’ point of view, namely the conceptual structure of a work otherwise merely historical. Once being identified the principal Ries’ sources in Jacques Vidal, Mircea Eliade, Gilbert Durand and Carl Gustav Jung, we worked with a double concern. Firstly, we have clarified the chief points of the perspective of the four scholars, in order to clarify their position concerning religious experience; secondarily, we compared these results with Ries’ valorisation of them. After having developed the basis of a symbolic anthropology, this work opens to further perspectives towards a “new symbolic ontology”, in order to renew anthropology tout court.

Texto completoThis dissertation consists of a critical edition, Italian translation and introductory essay to Jean Bodin's Methodus ad facilem historiarum cognitionem. Jean Bodin (1530-1596) is best known as the author of the Six livres de la République (1576), a true masterpiece of sixteenth-century political thought. First published in Paris in 1566, the Methodus was then reworked, revised and augmented by Bodin, and printed again by the same editor in 1572. The Methodus belongs to a crucial and fascinanting period of Bodin's thought, which was then still largely evolving. The République is still a long way to come, and yet one can already spot in the Methodus a few hints of Bodin's ongoing journey from constitutionnalism (basically, the idea of a monarchy limited by a range of checks and balances) to absolute sovereignty – a concept that Bodin formulates for the first time in 1576, and that represents a crucial step in modern political theory. This edition results from systematic comparisons between the first two French editions (1566, 1572), the only ones directly supervised by the author himself. All of the variants and additions which Bodin made in view of the second edition of 1572 have been carefully identified, shown in the critical apparatus, and thoroughly discussed. Thanks to this fresh textual material, it will now be possible to study the evolution of Bodin's thought more closely across this crucial decade, 1566-1576; it will also be possible to recontextualise Bodin's political ideas, to formulate new hypothesis concerning their genesis, and hopefully to better grasp differences and analogies between the Methodus and the République. In the introductory essay, a few points are made to argue in favour of the internal unity of the Methodus and its relative autonomy vis-à-vis the République. Then, using abundant evidence yielded by the variants and additions of 1572, it is argued that, contrarily to what many believe, there was nothing like an “absolutist turn” in Bodin's thought, and that Bodin's drifting away from constitutionnalism towards “absolute sovereignty” should not be too rigidly connected with St Bartholomew's massacre and with the consequent polemics against the monarchomaques. As far as Bodin is concerned, indeed, his intellectual evolution had taken an anti-constitutionnalist direction well before August 1572, for reasons which seem to owe less to the political context of 1570's France, than to a concern for conceptual exactness and consistency which is in fact quite typical of this author

Texto completoThe work presents a new critical edition of the greek text of "Excerpta ex Theodoto" of Clement of Alexandria together with the first complete Italian translation. Some introductory chapters and an extensive commentary allow you to appreciate the richness of the contents of this early third century source for the study of Gnosticism, ancient Christian literature, patristic and history of dogma. The ETh are not a collection of original fragments copied from Gnostic sources mainly valentinian, as believed to routinely. For an in-depth analysis they appear to be a compilation of thirteen fragments from "Hypotyposeis", lost work of Clement. The nature and extent of these fragments show that the traditional division of the ETh in four sections is unacceptable. It must also be abandoned the attempt to accurately identify 'valentinian' and 'clementinian' parts. Clement shows a few quotes verbatim from his sources. Very often shows 'heterodox' doctrines indirectly proposing summaries ('epitomes'). In the first part of the collection Clement presents and discusses especially valentinian doctrines, probably 'eastern'. Instead, starting mainly from the fragment 11, he presents the Theodotus thought. He seems develope and modify doctrines of 'western' valentinianism, as demonstrated by the comparison with the 'Great Notice' of Irenaeus.

BONVICINI, Laura. "Compimento e rischio nell'accadimento della fede.Il contributo critico di Bernhard Welte all'approfondimento della comprensione della fede a partire da Karl Jaspers e alla luce dell'ermeneutica della fatticità di Martin Heidegger, in riferimento soprattutto al ciclo di lezioni su "cattolicità e ragione" tenute presso l'Università di Freiburg". Doctoral thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11562/344000.
Texto completoWhat kind of relationship could there be between revealed faith and the man's thought today? How can it be combined with the freedom of consciousness? Is it possible to believe, remaining free to think? In order to try to find possible answers to these questions, I referred to the contributions of Bernhard Welte, who has worked and taught in Freiburg (Germany) since the 80s of the 20th century. I especially referred to a cycle of lessons he held in 1949, Catholicism and Reason, (B. WELTE, Nachlass, Bestand E 8, Nr. 15: Katholizität und Vernunft, Einstündige publice Vorlesung Sommersemester 1949). Today, these lessons are kept at the archive of the University of Freiburg. The topic of this work is represented by religious faith. This is the starting point for a reflection that could justify its rational validity and its coherence with the idea of a spiritually free human being. In such a context, philosophy is called to reach the conceptual definition of the original dimension of being a man, in order to evaluate why, how and how much the result could reasonably match a religious decision. Maintaining themselves mutually independent, faith and philosophy could reach extremely important meeting points. This can especially happen when rigorous reasoning becomes self-critical and, while considering its limits, contributes to the understanding of a choice -faith- that goes beyond the sphere of sole rationality. In this work, the matter is considered from a phenomenologic point of view. The starting points are the question about the essence of the man (who is “the man”?) and the question about the meaning of reality (why do things exist?); in order to get rid of all unjustified assumptions and anticipations, we try to observe things (the man and the world) and to highlight the intentional and relational nature of man. His historical structure determines the way the world (intended as the place where the being opens) is. This is intended to show that faith can become either a coherent answer to the state of things, or an attitude that aims to answer the needs of the spirit of the man, without contrasting them. Husserl's thought contributed to this descriptive sensitivity (about the elements that build up the essential structure of faith, intended as a phenomenon) and to a return to the original meaning of things. Anyway, Welte's analysis is wider and it includes Heidegger's perspective. Heidegger defines the relationship between the man and the world with historical poignancy. Time resizes its main features -being measurable and regular- in order to regain its connection to existence and reveal itself as an event that can provoke the question related to the being in general and in particular to the being of man. Important matching points between the thoughts of Welte and Levinas have been found thanks to their common philosophical field, that was especially built by the thoughts of Husserl and Heidegger. The aim is to lead the thought to its foundation. Welte made a deeper and more detailed comparison with Jaspers. In his cycle of lessons, he committed himself to an -at times strict- “dialogue” with some provocations made by his colleague, who lived in Basil, in particular in his work Von der Whrheit (Piper, München 19833), where a paragraph deals with the relationship between catholicism and reason. Jasper's theme of philosophical faith and his critical attitude towards historical religions, Catholicism in particular, made Welte doubt his personal beliefs and made him research how revealed faith can guarantee the man the freedom he needs to define himself such. According to Welte, not choosing a determined faith in order to stick to philosophical faith doesn't give the possibility to unconditionally question oneself. It prevents form experiencing the Absolute, because of the concrete and limited reality that typifies the man. Jasper's philosophical faith holds the man down to a state of suspension that cannot constitute any kind of decision. It determines the impossibility to make a precise choice; the only possible choice would be not choosing. The objections underlying Welte's considerations about philosophical faith are similar to the ones Heiddegger had about the way his colleague from Basel intends the reality. This way of describing the reality is not so different from the static and detached conception, that is typical of Cartesio's scientific thought. According to Welte, what Jaspers thought about philosophical faith is an unavoidable result, even if the declarations of his purposes are very different; he can't get rid of a conception of reality that is similar to traditional metaphysics, even if he had accused traditional metaphysics not to be able to authentically understand the world, only giving an explanation. Jaspers tries to understand the reality starting from the concept of man as an self-referential entity that is independent from his historical context. The historical context has to be outpaced while trascending; because the man is historically determined, it cannot be seen as a trascending entity. Concrete existence is not a primary resource of the process where we try to understand reality. Historical concreteness is an obstacle that has to be overcome in order to be able to understand everything. In such a way and from Welte's heideggerian point of view, Jaspers considers the elements that characterize the choice for philosophical faith, man and reality. Once we surrender and stop trying to recognize the historical aspect of the man and the world, Jaspers' philosophical faith appears to be a vague answer that, according to Welte, cannot explain the limited and temporal choices of the man. Only the decision to follow an historically determined faith allows us not to create an image of an abstract and atemporal man. In such a context, it is important to highlight two main aspects: the first is that faith has to be intended as an historically determined choice; the second is the relational nature of the two entities involved in the religious experience: the man in his concrete reality and the Absolute. Faith can be a choice that is coherent with all the other aspects of a person and it can be the answer to a structural need of the man.

Texto completoThis research is concerned with the religious issue in the most recent papers by Julia Kristeva, a thinker that apprehends the unquietness and the disorientation of the contemporary Subject and that endeavors to answer to them by proposing a novel Humanism. Kristeva’s Humanism takes shape by questioning the symbolic poverty of our age from some privileged observation points: the Holy, the Motherly, the Atheism. Throughout this route the need to believe is unveiled as crucial: by its pre-religious meaning it becomes the undroppable key to reconfigurate Reason, otherwise doomed to be dissolved into the emptiness of abstraction were it to neglect the deep layers of language where the remnants of all heterogenities unrelentlessly challenging the concept lie. Only within this complexity new spaces are opened to acknowledge and to recognize the Limit, the Feminine and the Real.
