Ve´lez-Serna, Mari´a Antonia. "Film distribution in Scotland before 1918". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3605/.

Resumen
This thesis proposes an empirical approach to the history of film distribution and exhibition in Scotland before 1918. It deploys geo-database tools as a way to collect and analyse data from a range of archival and print sources, and to engage with historiographical questions about the emergence of cinema as an institution in a non-metropolitan context. The first part introduces the theoretical and methodological premises that underpin the project, situating it in relation to growing academic interest in early distribution and local film practices. A research method is outlined, involving the construction of a relational database documenting the places of film exhibition and the geographical variation in programming practices. This database, working alongside more detailed archival case studies, constitutes the foundation for broader discussions about the commercial, social and ideological roles of film and cinema. The analytical framework incorporates notions such as the commodity nature of film and the tension between different conceptions of the social role and position of cinema within Scottish communities. The emergence of institutional practices and structures in Scotland is thus described as occurring in a complex field of forces where two main polarities appear as prominent: Firstly, a tension between decentralised, local practices and the increasingly globalised operations of the film industry; and secondly, a shifting balance between regularisation and distinction, or the ordinary and the extraordinary. It is in terms of this fluid equilibrium that two overlapping moments in the history of the early Scottish film trade are described in the second and third parts of the thesis. Part II follows the creation and expansion of the Scottish market and popular demand for moving pictures, showing how different forms of film supply enabled the coexistence of various types of itinerant exhibition, and then of a gradual transition to fixed-site shows. It starts by exploring the continuities between film exhibition and existing cultural forms such as lantern lecturing and the music hall. It highlights the significant level of agency exercised by local exhibitors and renters within an open-market model that allowed the outright sale of films, and which also established a commercial interdependency between city-centre and peripheral exhibition. Part III argues that, once the market reached a relatively stable state with the regularisation of supply and the growing standardisation of the film product, the increasing concentration of capital and power in larger companies (both in the regional and the global scale) marked a shift in the balance of forces, away from unrestricted circulation and towards exclusivity. This is seen as a reformulation of the commodity status of film, associated with the emergence of feature programming. The consequences of the new textual and industrial trends for the Scottish distributors and exhibitors are considered, revealing geographical variation in their adoption, as well as incipient forms of resistance to the emerging institutional practices.

Title as it appears in MIT Commencement Exercises program, June 5, 2015: Online independent film distribution platforms: what is missing? Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references.
This thesis proposes a new model for online platforms for independent films. Today, platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, and YouTube are in the face of major industry challenges: more competitors are entering the market; consumers are demanding more diverse content and higher quality service; and cost of content acquisition keeps increasing. In addition, the independent film industry has a fragmented value chain, which makes it challenging for filmmakers to fund and distribute their films. By applying the platforms framework proposed by Prof. Annabelle Gawer, as well as the "coring and tipping" strategy outlined by Prof. Gawer and Prof. Cusumano, the analysis in this paper shows that a company can become a platform leader by integrating two sides of the value chain: distribution and funding. This strategy will incentivize filmmakers and distributors to use the platform instead of competitors; and it will solve the problem of industry fragmentation. This model can also give the platform access to new data on its consumers' preferences; and enable it to acquire films in its early stages at a lower cost.

Nikdel, Elliott. "Online distribution and the relocation of specialised film". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/412010/.

Resumen
The recent advent of online film distribution has inspired a utopian vision of change and disruption. In particular, online distribution is believed to foster a new democratic dawn of content distribution, widening the range of choice and opening pathways to a plethora of cultural content. This is deemed to have a particularly enriching impact on the diversity of film culture by dragging specialised and niche films from the fringes of the market to the centre of cultural life. In light of these claims, this thesis considers whether online film distribution is the disruptive force that many promise. In particular, this thesis assesses whether online distribution widens public access to niche content and stimulates greater public engagement with a range of specialised film. As a means of exploring these issues, this thesis proposes an alternative approach to the study of online film distribution. Rather than subscribing to the notion of disruption, this thesis argues for a model of continuity. This is achieved by analysing the current changes in content delivery through a historical lens of study. Firstly, by surveying the important chapters in the history of film distribution and exhibition in Britain, this thesis identifies a number of patterns and practices which have served to limit public access to specialised film. Following this, we see how a number of these practices and trends resurface online albeit in slightly new and interesting ways. This is evident across the broader digital landscape, addressing issues such as the renewed influence of marketing and content visibility; the continued importance of theatrical exhibition; the profound ways in which traditions of specialised distribution and exhibition shape the online platform MUBI; and the reinforcement of social distinction in the context of illegal online filesharing. By examining these and other issues, this thesis challenges the utopian discourse by painting a more complex portrait of the digital landscape, one in which the future is profoundly tethered to the past.

McKenna, Mark. "Rethinking the 'video nasties' : economics, marketing, and distribution". Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2017. http://eprints.staffs.ac.uk/5264/.

Texto completo
Resumen
There are two things that most people know about the ‘video nasties.’ The first is that prior to 1984 the video industry was completely unregulated and the absence of any regulation allowed a space for immoral and disreputable elements of the businesses to thrive. The second is that a series of public complaints about the advertising used to promote the ‘video nasties’ triggered a moral panic that led to introduction of the Video Recordings Act in 1984. Neither of these statements is entirely true, but both have allowed a popular history to persist that continues to hold the independent distributor directly accountable for the events that led to a scheme of government sanctioned censorship that continues to this day. Through exploring the marketing and distribution of the ‘video nasties’, this thesis will challenge this established history and will contextualise the ‘video nasties’ within the emerging landscape of the wider home video industry. Moving beyond the explicitly social readings that have dominated these histories and that have positioned them as an explicitly British concern, this study offers a reading that considers the ‘video nasties’ as part of, and not separate from, a broader global film industry and wider industrial practice. This will be accomplished over three sections. In the first section I will detail the established social history before reconsidering the accuracy of this narrative when it is considered alongside a previously neglected economic and technological history. This context will provide the foundation for the rest of the thesis, providing a basis that reconceptualises the ‘video nasties’ both historically and as part of wider film markets. In the second section I will return to the claims made against the promotional strategies of the early distributors and historicise this type of promotion, tracing a lineage to the ballyhoo of William Castle and the early promotions of P.T Barnum. This will provide context for a study that considers the marketing and branding of both the films and the companies that produced them, following the market through Video, DVD and Blu-ray. The final section documents the evolution of both the product and the marketplace, considering how theoretical constructs arising from film studies can help us understand the marketplace of the ‘video nasties’. The thesis is a revisionist history that reconsiders the birth of the independent video industry in the United Kingdom through the films and distributors that were marginalised and castigated.

Niro designed and built five near-identical milk evaporators for Fonterra’s production site at Clandeboye and five at the Edendale site. Tubes in the Clandeboye evaporators often fouled excessively and occasionally blocked, requiring water blasting to clear them. Large amounts of undesirable foam from milk were observed in the second effect of some evaporators. This was known to be related to fouling and early shutdowns. The fouling increased the cleaning chemical and utility usage, and the evaporator downtime. The problems were believed to be related to the liquid distribution system at the top of the tubes. Evaporator liquid distribution has received relatively little research but it has been shown that the efficiency of evaporation reduces when there is poor wetting. Some estimates were available from previous work for the minimum flowrates required to obtain a complete falling film inside a tube. Many tasks were performed to assess the performance of the liquid distribution systems. The minimum wetting rates of three different milks were found in a model evaporator tube under isothermal, heat transfer and evaporation conditions at 60ºC. Numerous measurements of evaporators at Clandeboye were made to thoroughly analyse the evaporator performance. The overall heat transfer coefficients and wetting rates were calculated throughout the evaporators. Physical measurements were taken of the dimensions of the distribution systems in every evaporator. Many potential problems were found including warping, inconsistent hole sizes and fabrication faults. An analysis of the tube and distribution hole arrangements showed that every pass had some liquid misdistribution which was confirmed by a water trial. The evaporators were inspected before cleaning after 22 hours of whole milk production and after 5 hours of milk protein concentrate (MPC) production. There was considerable fouling at the bottom of some tubes that received low whole milk flows and large particles of MPC were blocking distribution plate holes. Observation and analysis showed that the foaming was likely to be caused by an upward flow of vapour from some passes which disrupted the downward flow of milk. As a result of this project there is sufficient confidence to justify modification of effects 2 and 4 of the evaporators. Sixteen tubes in effect 4 will be welded shut and the distribution systems in effects 2 and 4 will be redesigned to give a better liquid distribution. For effect 2, vertical tubes called ‘vapour risers’ should be installed to allow the vapour to flow upwards through the distribution plate without creating foam. The heights of the partitions dividing the effect 2 passes will be modified to encourage any foam in pass 1 to flow preferentially to pass 2. Installing a filter after the MPC direct steam injector will reduce the number of blocked distribution plate holes. Both modifications are expected to enable the evaporators to run continuously for 20 hours instead of 15 hours, giving up to 33% fewer cleans. The cleaning costs are approximately $700 and milk losses are approximately $200 per clean. The modifications should save up to $438,000, based on cleaning and water blasting in the 2003-2004 milk powder season. The design of future evaporator distribution systems must be improved to avoid retrofitting.

Resumen
Cultural flow, the access producers have to markets and the range of films available to audiences are heavily circumscribed by gatekeeping arrangements that have developed between sales agents and distributors in the film distribution business. This thesis examines how sales agents and distributors operate in that business: the sort of roles they have taken on over time, their ability to regulate the circulation of and access to films, the way they exercise power over distribution, and how they operate as part of gatekeeping networks.

In 1965, the presence of Indian films in the Arab region is sparking debate. While some perceive the popularity of Indian films as an “invasion”, the reasons for this success are formulated in essentialist terms by the film historian Georges Sadoul, as “a kind of innate spontaneity” (Inter-Arab Center for Cinema and of television 1965). To render these ambivalences, the purpose of this work was not to offer the arguments of a cultural connivance between Indian films and Arab countries, but to document the circulation of films, contributing to a global history of South-South cinematographic circuits. This research articulates the circulation modes of Indian films over a long period, from 1954 to 2014, in order to give to these cinematographic exchanges all their historicity. Questioning the Middle East from the perspective of the Indian film industry formulates an alternative vision of this region. It contributes to give their place to unsung actors, to make a history of distributors and cinemas in light of the circuits of Indian films. At the same time, undertaking this story requires understanding how the Bombay film industry perceives and invests foreign territories in broadcasting its films. Returning to the process of circulation in themselves over a period of 60 years opened the door to asperities, to the stumbling of stories. A transnational ethnography of circulation networks of Hindi films in Beirut, Cairo and Dubai, shows differently permeable territories. In an approach that documents film circuits and distinguishes its agents, this work focuses on a historical anthropology of the distribution field. The typology of the networks indicates their plasticity and shows all the ingenuity of the actors of the diffusion, adapting, modulating and anticipating even the historical mutations of the region

I believe film has the power to transform people's lives and minds and to enlighten today's generation like any other medium. This is why I wanted to write my thesis about film distribution as it will determine the future of the industry itself. The way films are distributed, accessed and consumed will be critical in shaping our future entertainment culture and the way we approach content. The goal of this thesis is to analyze current distribution models, consumer behaviors and distributors marketing efforts to try anticipating the best models for the film industry. I also want to explore what the changes in the distribution landscape mean for the creatives and the content creation in overall. I will focus my analysis on movie distribution in the United States as I consider this country to be the most changing and dynamic market in the whole industry. Trends and practices in the US should be predictive of future distribution and consumption models in international territories. In addition to the high number of articles that helped me for this thesis, I will very often refer to Chuck Tryon's On-Demand Culture: Digital Delivery and the Future of Movies (2013), and Anita Elberse' s Blockbusters: Why Big Hits - and Big Risks are The Future of the Entertainment Business (2013).

Resumen
This paper aims to discuss how the changing perception of film accessibility affects the exploitation and distribution of movies. Films are now seen as an extremely available and far-' reaching source of entertainment, and consumers have recently adapted in new ways due to the advent of new technological movie-viewing resources. The emergence of consumers who have the ability to watch their favorite movies on a small, handheld tablet demonstrates just how far the distribution of film has come. With many new options to find and watch movies, a person's preferences and schedule can typically be matched with some form of viewing technology. This new widespread availability of film, and how young consumers view films, will be the basis of this thesis, focusing upon college undergraduates and their common behaviors of seeking and viewing movies and in-depth research on the changes of the industry. A series of four studies were conducted to explore the movie viewing behaviors and preferences of undergraduate students and the University of Arizona.

Resumen
This thesis has two interrelated research objectives. First, to understand the circulation of Chinese cinema in Britain through the cultural authorities and gatekeepers responsible for the canonisation of international film. Second, to use Chinese-language films as case studies through which to deconstruct and better understand the mechanisms that make up British film cultures and their tastemaking practices. English-language Chinese film studies has long been preoccupied with the semantic issue of how to define such a loaded and diverse concept as “Chinese cinema”, with investigations generally focusing on film form and production contexts. This thesis extends these studies to include considerations of the role played by film circulation, to observe how the parameters of these analyses and the films of their focus are defined in the first instance. This thesis traces the lineage of Chinese cinema as it has appeared in Britain's film cultures from 1954 through to 2014 when this project began. Taking emblematic moments of this history as case studies to anchor the investigation, each chapter contextualises the cultures into which Chinese-language films arrived. Using the sociological theories of Pierre Bourdieu and others, these investigations note how, in addition to their negotiation of international trends, domestic skirmishes for cultural authority within Britain have had significant effects on the perceived value of Chinese cinema. This thesis considers the various social, cultural, and class contexts that support Britain's key tastemakers in the circulation of Chinese cinema. It shows not only the ways modes of evaluation and film availability are cultivated through these contexts, but that the activities therein result also from, and curate, assumptions toward Chinese as a cultural, political and ethnic signifier. Those commanding the discourse around Chinese cinema in Britain have done so with conceptions about Chineseness that result from and contribute to domestic conflicts of taste, class and social standing. The inevitable intersections between film tastes and cultural assumptions have worked to curate a parochial definition of Chinese cinema that prioritises certain kinds of films at the expense of others, dependent more on the idiosyncrasies of British film cultures than the activities of Chinese film industries.

This thesis explores how pirate cultures and “informal” distribution circuits operate on the ground level and integrate global media texts (mainly Hollywood films) into a small section of the local everyday society of Hanoi, Viet Nam. Situating the pirate stores and its components as active and central, this thesis will examine the physical flow of media through these store sites. In addition, by exploring the interactions between media texts, store owners and workers, customers, and the store’s design itself, this thesis will reveal how media piracy (as a form of distribution and “normal” access) influences and negotiates modernity, cultures, identities, and meanings in Hanoi and Viet Nam.

Resumen
The history of British cinema is often approached from the perspective of charting and analysing the history of British film production, taking in the contribution made by directors, actors, writers and studios. In this thesis I assert that a history of British cinema ought to take into consideration what was being presented to British audiences in cinemas. During this period independent distributors imported hundreds of European films into the UK to fill the constant need cinemas had for new product, a need which could not be met from Hollywood or the British film industry alone. This thesis focuses on specific popular genres; the peplum, or sword-and-sandal film, the Eurospy thriller and sexploitation. The latter is further divided into loose sub-genres; the prostitution drama, the “Mondo” documentary and the sex education film. Taking the lead from the New Film History and the work of Sarah Street in document analysis, material is used from several different archives to reveal information about the practices of these chosen distributors, which enables an original view on the way independent distribution worked in the 1960s and 1970s. Oral history interviews with people who either worked in the sector or who had direct contact with the distributors under discussion are also included, offering new information and historical data. These interviews provide a unique insight into a part of the film industry which has otherwise been neglected by official histories of British cinema. Analysis of some of the key texts has also taken place, in order to present a wider understanding of the genres and the way the marketing material and exploitation techniques often served to misrepresent the texts themselves. Issues around Imperialism and Orientalism have been explored in relation to some of these texts to contextualise the genres under discussion. The findings of this thesis demonstrate that, for historians, the field is still open to new areas of research.

Resumen
Film flow measurements at several axial positions in round pipes with variousaxial power distributions are presented for conditions corresponding to normaloperation of a BWR. It is confirmed that the film flow rate approaches zero atthe onset of dryout. Selected phenomenological models of annular two-phaseflow are shown to reasonably reproduce the measurements. It is concluded thatmodels are in better agreement with measurements if terms corresponding topossible boiling induced entrainment are excluded. A method to perform film flow analysis in subchannels as a post-processto a standard two-field subchannel code is suggested. It is shown that thisapproach may yield accurate prediction of dryout power in rod bundles to alow computational cost and that the influence of the power distribution is wellpredicted by the model.

Resumen
This thesis provides an integrated analysis of formal and informal distribution networks for East Asian Cinema in the UK through interviews and ethnographic-style research. It examines what motivates and shapes the acquisition decisions of distributors in these contexts and how these motivations might conflict, interact with, or complement one another. Whilst existing literature has focused on formal distribution and ‘piracy’ as distinct phenomena, this thesis considers both in conjunction with each other and also uncovers the distinct social contexts of each environment. Through anti-piracy discourse, the positions and priorities of ‘pirates’ and the ‘industry’ are repeatedly constructed as unequivocally distinct and oppositional. However, on the basis of my research, I argue that these seemingly opposed groups -- professional distributors and filesharers -- are more similar than we might imagine. The connections between the online and offline distributors can be noted in a number of ways. First, the actions of distributors within formal and informal networks involve complex social and cultural interactions rather than purely economic considerations. Second, an individual’s position in a socially imagined ‘knowledge community’ is perceived to be more significant than economic interest in motivating the activities of distributors within both formal and informal channels. Third, by applying Molteni and Ordanini’s principle of socio-network effects, I argue that distributors online and offline are engaged in a symbiotic relationship where each party can be said to benefit socially and culturally, if not necessarily economically, from the actions of each other. Overall, this thesis argues that social contexts of distribution in formal and informal settings shape the distribution process. Indeed, rather than just representing the movement of an economic commodity, the act of film distribution also mediates and facilitates the social and professional relationships of distributors across both sectors.

The aim of this work is to analyze attitudes of Prague film viewers towards watching films at the cinema and at home and to find out on what factors do they base their decision to watch a particular film. The means to achieve this goal are research of existing literature related to this subject and my own research through a questionnaire survey on a sample population of Prague with a corresponding demographic composition. The most crucial conclusions from this investigation are related to the frequency of watching movies in the cinema and at home, attitudes towards the origin and localization of movies, attitudes towards various genres, factors influencing the choice of a film and comparing the results of various demographic groups (by gender, age and education) within these topics.

The first part of this study deals with the modelling of the impact of a thin plane gas jet a flat plate in order to define the pressure and shear stress distributions on the wall. In the second part, these results are used to study the behavior of viscous film liquid on the strip moving upward and submitted to the jet action. The jet actions are determined by a numerical computation based on finite volume scheme. The impingement of a plane two dimensional turbulent and compressible jet is modelised using the k-ɛ model combined to the wall functions. In order to reduce the near wall gnd influence on the shear stress calculation, a hybrid wall law is proposed resulting from simultaneous use of the logarithmic law and generalized one. Pressure and shear stress distributions on the flat plane are calculated and validated by experimental data. The motion of liquid coating is modelised by taking into account the inertia terms, neglected in the previous studies. This model is applied to the galvanization process and compared with measurements obtained in various conditions

Resumen
In this study I analyse the thirty-year journey of Karunamayudu (1978), an Indian Jesus film, from its production to its recent reception. Drawing on a combination of historical and empirical data I explore questions such as: What religious traditions and experiences have informed Karunamayudu's production, content, distribution and reception? How has this film been appropriated by distributors, producers, and viewers? And how does such an understanding of the history of Karunamayudu (1978), arguably India's best-known Jesus film, contribute to our understanding of the tangled relationship between film, religion, and theology? In the first chapter I demonstrate how this study contributes to gaps in the existing scholarship on film, religion, and theology, Jesus in film, and religion in Indian cinema. In the second chapter I provide a rationale for the methodologies I employed. The third and fourth chapters address the production history and context of the film, and the fifth is a review of the film itself. In chapters six and seven I discuss the distribution and reception of the film, respectively, and in the eighth and concluding eighth chapter I reflect on the implications of this account for ongoing scholarship in the field of film, religion, and theology.

Resumen
This institutional and cultural history seeks to restore the foreign language art film to its influential position in postwar British film culture. Its central argument is that the elevation of a group of mainly European directors and films to the newly autonomous field of cinematic art reached its heights in the 1950s and 1960s. Three main factors which drove this process are explored: firstly, changes in society related to education and social mobility that created new audiences; secondly, changing economic and cultural contexts, especially the film festival, whereby European productions were able to challenge Hollywood; and thirdly the construction of new institutional frameworks through publications, distribution companies, cinemas, and film societies. A further argument is that film critics, who were increasingly promoting the ideas of personal authorship inflected by national histories, provided audiences with analytical tools for their readings of art films, thus becoming key agents in the construction of intellectual discourses which separated the art film from Hollywood studio production. The period also saw the combination of sexual explicitness in the ‘serious’ art film with an increasing number of continental X films being sold on their sexual titillation. This study investigates how and why these two trends sometimes met in the same spaces of distribution and exhibition, and how the overlapping identities of ‘sex’ and ‘art’ were negotiated by censors, critics, and audiences. The thesis presents a national picture through new research on local case studies across the UK, mapping the impact of art films outside, as well as within, London and exploring how the particularities of place shaped audiences and programmes. Finally, an analysis of the findings from Cinema Memories, a project conducted for this thesis, provides fresh insights into the reception of foreign language films.

Resumen
Ethyl cellulose (EC) is one of the most important coating materials for controlled release formulations. To achieve the desirable drug release, the physical properties of EC films incorporated with various functional additives need to be fully understood. Therefore, the aim of this project is to characterize the physical properties of EC films incorporated with various plasticizers and pore forming agents, hence to understand the drug release mechanisms in relation to the physical characteristics of EC films. The thermal properties of EC powder and EC films were initially characterized by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), modulated temperature DSC (MTDSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Subsequently, oleic acid (OA), dibutyl sebacate (DBS) and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) were incorporated as plasticizers while hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was utilized as the pore forming agent. The thermal, thermo-mechanical and phase distribution of EC films incorporated with plasticizers and/or HPMC were investigated using MTDSC, DMA and localized thermal analysis (LTA). These results were compared with the thermal properties and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the free films after immersion into water, pH 1.2 and 6.8 buffers. Dissolution of metoprolol succinate and paracetamol from SureSpheres® pellets coated by these films were then carried out. OA and DBS were more efficient than MCT for EC films. OA and DBS showed good compatibility with EC, whereas at 20% plasticizer level and beyond, EC/MCT films presented two EC phases with 8% and 24% MCT respectively. The addition of HPMC to EC films did not show a significant effect on their thermal properties. However, the phase distribution of HPMC domains was affected by the HPMC levels. After immersion into the release media, HPMC generated water filled pores quickly in the first two hours. The shape and sizes of these pores were corresponding to the phase distribution of HPMC domains. The release from these films appeared to follow zero-order kinetics, except for metoprolol succinate from pellets coated by EC/plasticizer/HPMC films, which followed the Higuchi model. It is suggested that the dissolution rate of HPMC, film properties and solubility of the model drugs is the ratedetermining step.

The industrial model of filmmaking is structured by dividing the production of a film between three sectors. Production, distribution and exhibition, and the gradual and sequential content offer in the viewports. The distribution and exhibition sectors are responsible for the film commercialization, both work together in order to enable commercial success of production and monetize their own activities. Currently, the distribution activity is exercised by American conglomerates of media, the majors, and by independent distributors that operate on a national scale, usually with smaller films, called niche films. However, the development of new media and the communication media's convergence resulted in a model that proposes the content display on multiple windows and production by niche's demand . This research proposes to discuss and understand the role of the new display windows, potentiated by the convergence of media vehicles, as diffusion of alternative independent audiovisual productions. As an example, it will be discussed the distribution strategy for the movie 3 Efes (Carlos Gerbase, 2007).

Theodore Is Dying is a feature length film written and directed by Ryan Ceri Pomeranz. It was undertaken as a partial fulfillment of the requirements to receive a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Digital Media from the Department of Film in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida. The film aims to explore both the immediate and the long-term effects of choices made by four people at specific moments of demarcation in their lives. Structurally, the film is presented in an episodic and non- linear style that attempts to examine each protagonist's own set of conflicts, while simultaneously exposing how the choices they make affect one another. The film's production presented many unique challenges to our producing team, cast and crew such as shooting on location in Scranton, Pennsylvania over one thousand miles from home and figuring out where to allocate funds from our “ultra-low” budget. These challenges were met head on and often times acted as catalysts for rethinking the way that films at our budget level could be produced. As a result, the account of the making of Theodore Is Dying, from development through distribution, aims to contribute these ideas to the larger conversation about the role of Ultra-Low Budget Filmmaking in the modern filmmaking era.

Resumen
This thesis examines the significance of crowdfunding for Australian filmmakers and provides an empirical basis to current claims about the role of crowdfunding in the film production and policy sectors. It has found that crowdfunding is a small but growing source of supplementary finance which is opening up new possibilities for Australian independent screen content producers. This project also highlights the discussion within Australian film policy circles that is opening the way for crowdfunding to potentially become a larger and more formalised component of current and emerging policy initiatives.

Resumen
Digital transformation has led to major shifts in the customer landscape and the roles of distribution channel partners, resulting in implications for the distribution channel strategy of manufacturing firms. Whereas previous research in the field focused primarily on the impact of the shifting customer landscape, a gap in the literature was identified concerning digital transformation in relation to a manufacturing firm's distribution channel strategy. This study therefore aims to explore how the distribution channel strategy of manufacturing firms is affected by digital transformation and what the main challenges are for manufacturers, in order to address these implications. Building on existing work on multi-channel strategies and technological advancements, the main research question is: How can manufacturing firms adapt their distribution channel strategy in the face of digital transformation? An exploratory case study on a manufacturing firm was conducted utilizing semi-structured interviews as the main source of data, and analysis of the case study indicates that digital transformation affects the strategic choices of manufacturing firms related to their end users and channel partners. Based on the findings, the thesis contributes with practical considerations: that manufacturers should adapt the distribution channel strategy by focusing on the transformation of culture towards a holistic ecosystem approach to an integrated multi-channel strategy and by promoting win-win channel partner relationships. Also, the thesis makes a theoretical contribution by generating empirical evidence from a case study of a manufacturing firm, highlighting strategic challenges in the face of digital transformation.

Navigating the synthesis landscape poses many challenges when developing novel solid state materials. Advancements in both synthesis and characterization are necessary to facilitate the targeting of specific materials. This dissertation discusses the formation of chalcogenide heterostructures and their properties in the first part and the development of thin film pair distribution function analysis (tfPDF) in the second part. The heterostructures were formed by the self-assembly of designed precursors deposited by physical vapor deposition in a modulated elemental reactants approach, which provides the control and predictability to synthesis. Specifically, a series of (BiSe)1+δ(TiSe2)n, where n = 2,3,&4, were synthesized to explore the extent of charge transfer from the BiSe to TiSe2 layers. To further explore the role Bi plays in charge donation, a family of structurally similar compounds, (BixSn1-xSe)1+TiSe2 , where 0≥x≥1, were synthesized and characterized. Electrical measurements show doping efficiency decreases as x increases, correlated with the structural distortion and the formation of periodic antiphase boundaries containing Bi-Bi pairs. The first heterostructures composed of three unique structural types were synthesized and Bi2Se3 layer thickness was used to tune electrical properties and further explore charge transfer. To better understand the potential energy landscape on which these kinetically stable compounds exist, two investigations were undertaken. The first was a study of the formation and subsequent decomposition of [(BiSe)1+δ]n(TiSe2)n compounds, where n= 2&3, the second an investigation of precursor structure for thermodynamically stable FeSb2 and kinetically stable FeSb3. The second section describes the development of thin film pair distribution function analysis, a technique in which total scattering data for pair distribution function (PDF) analysis is obtained from thin films, suitable for local structure analysis. This study illustrates how analysis of the local structure in amorphous precursor films can help to understand the crystallization processes of metastable phases and enables a range of new local structure studies of thin films. tfPDF was then demonstrated on In-Ga-O film materials and compared to traditional powder PDF analysis. This highlights differences between the products, and the utility of tfPDF to determined structural features of amorphous materials. This dissertation includes previously published and unpublished co-authored materials.

Resumen
This thesis examines the relationship between Italian immigrants and cinema in early twentieth century London. Through an investigation into a variety of both primary and secondary sources, I retrace the journey of migrant people and of moving images from Italy to the British capital. The aim of this study is to examine how the cultural identity of London's Italian community was constructed between 1890 and 1918 and the place of cinema within this process. The research engages with a series of questions that are linked to the notion that cinema's social role and the access of Italians to and involvement in cinema is better determined by first defining the immigrant community both culturally and historically. A discussion of the representations of, and discourses circulating about, Italians and Italian-ness, and the relative availability of cinematic images produced in or depicting Italy, permit further hypotheses about the response of the colony to moving images. The study of a very particular audience and the context in which it was situated, therefore allows me to explore a complex set of cultural and social histories. As such, the histories of emigration, film production, distribution and exhibition, and film culture more generally developed in this thesis inform a thoroughly contextual understanding of the relation between the 'Little Italians' and the cinema. In its conclusions the thesis reveals that, among London's Italian community, the formation of a sense of national identity and of a sense of belonging, whether to the country of origin or to the country of destination, remained problematic, even contested. It was elite groups above all that promoted a strong sense of national affiliation and identity, which was rather different to the experiences and allegiances of the working class members of the immigrant community. In this sense, my thesis argues that the importance of the cinema in the cultural life of the London's Italian colony was principally a result of the use made of it by the upper/middle-class immigrant elite during wartime.

The swedish film industry is regulated by a film contract between the state and representatives of the industry. This contract shall be renewed during 2013. The swedish state has in a declaration of intention expressed a wish of changes about the conditions to acquire financial support from the state for film production in Sweden. A so-called technology neutrality shall be instated which means that film production no longer in forehand needs to have secured a cinema distribution deal to acquire financial support from the state. This could mean a change for distribution of swedish films in Sweden which now consist of a somewhat strict order of viewing windows. Our research addresses how swedish film producers, distributors and cinema owners think about the distribution of swedish feature films. Qualitative interviews were conducted with these professionals to get a conclusive picture of the situation in Sweden to date and what the future might bring. The essay deals with the cinema's importance, the growth of Video on demand, and producers and distributers wishes of a more flexible way for distribution of film. The possibility to be able to tailor the distribution for every individual film and the window systems impact on the films up-to-dateness.

Rungta, Meha. "Carbon molecular sieve dense film membranes for ethylene/ethane separations". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50121.

Texto completo
Resumen
The current work focused on defining the material science options to fabricate novel, high performing ethylene/ethane (C₂H₄/C₂H₆) separation carbon molecular sieve (CMS) dense film membranes. Three polymer precursors: Matrimid®, 6FDA-DAM and 6FDA:BPDA-DAM were used as precursors to the CMS membranes. CMS performances were tailored by way of tuning pyrolysis conditions such as the pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, pyrolysis atmosphere etc. The CMS dense film membranes showed attractive C₂H₄/C₂H₆ separation performance far exceeding the polymeric membrane performances. Semi-quantitative diffusion size pore distributions were constructed by studying the transport performance of a range of different penetrant gases as molecular sized probes of the CMS pore structure. This, in conjunction with separation performance data, provided critical insights into the structure-performance relationships of the CMS materials. The effects of testing conditions, i.e. the testing temperature, pressure and feed composition on C₂H₄/C₂H₆ separation performance of CMS dense films were also analyzed. These studies were useful not just in predicting the membrane behavior from a practical stand-point, but also in a fundamental understanding of the nature of CMS membrane separation. The study helped clarify why CMS membranes outperform polymeric membrane performance, as well as allowed comparison between CMS derived from different precursors and processing conditions. The effects on C₂H₄/C₂H₆ separation in the presence of binary gas mixture were also assessed to get a more realistic measure of the CMS performance resulting from competition and bulk flow effects. The current work thus establishes a framework for guiding research ultimately aimed at providing a convenient, potentially scalable hollow fiber membrane formation technology for C₂H₄/C₂H₆ separation

This work concerns the study of behavior the corrosion of two aluminum alloy: the alloy 2024 (AA 2024 T351) and 7075 (AA7075 T7351) and pure aluminum, used as reference, in a solution of 0.1 M Na2SO4 using electrochemical measurements (polarization curves, curves Levich and impedance spectroscopy) with rotating disk electrodes. Compared to published studies, quantitative data on the anodic and cathodic processes occurring on the two alloys were obtained. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the microstructural characterization of two alloys: size, chemical composition of precipitates and surface fraction occupied by the different phases. The second part presents the results of impedance obtained at the corrosion potential for different immersion times and different speeds. At this potential, the behavior of materials is mainly controlled by the passive film. The impedance diagrams exhibit a frequency dispersion, expressed in terms of "constant stage element (CPE)." This behavior was analyzed using a physical model which allows to show a distribution of resistivity in the thickness of oxide films. In the last part, special attention was paid to the analysis of the cathodic reaction on the surface of the two alloys that is causing their degradation. The oxygen reduction occurs mainly on the intermetallic particles. Surprisingly, the cathode current density is significantly lower for the alloy 7075 which has a greater surface area covered by the particles. It was shown that for 2024 alloy, the cathodic reaction is controlled by material transport by convective diffusion of small electrodes, while for the alloy AA 7075, most of the particles, very small, behaves as microelectrodes for which the current is set by the spherical diffusion, independent of the convection

Resumen
The aerospace industry is steadily increasing its use of polymer-matrix composites (PMCs) in airframe structures as it seeks to benefit from the high specific in-plane strength of laminated structural PMCs. However, PMC laminates suffer from low interlaminar shear strength due to their weaker polymer-matrix. Minimising risks of delamination is of paramount importance towards improving the safety of PMC structures. Multi-scale composites that are reinforced by both continuous fibres and nano-particles were identified as a potential solution for improving toughness and reducing risks of delamination in PMCs. An important challenge in the fabrication of multi-scale PMCs is to ensure that nano-particles are dispersed uniformly within the matrix. This is only achieved through minimal filtration of nano-particles during processing. The short resin flow lengths enabled by the resin film infusion (RFI) process make this process a prime candidate for the fabrication of multi-scale PMCs. The main objective of this thesis is to validate the possibility of using out-of-autoclave RFI for fabricating multi-scale carbon fibre composites featuring epoxy resins modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The work is accomplished in 5 phases. In phase 1, preliminary work investigates the fabrication of PMCs with and without CNTs, using out-of-autoclave RFI. Results show that the types of reinforcement and matrix have strong effects on the porosity and interlaminar strength of PMCs. These results ushered the need for more thorough investigation and understanding of the RFI process, beyond what is available in the literature. Phases 2 to 4 focus on understanding how the choices of materials and types of stacking configuration can affect parts made using RFI. Phase 2, the in-situ characterisation of resin saturation during RFI is performed. Results enable a detailed analysis of the way in which resin flows around and inside yarns. Phase 3 consists in the characterisation of void formation during RFI. Two types of voids are observed: flow-induced voids resulting from either the merging of resin flow fronts or the drainage from capillary action; and gas-induced voids resulting from resin volatiles going out of solution and remaining in the resin matrix. In this work, the greatest source of porosity was caused by volatiles. In phase 4, the distribution and filtration of CNTs during RFI processing is characterised. Results show that processing choices can limit filtration and that clustering of CNTs prevents a uniform dispersion of CNTs in PMCs. Finally, the possibility of using RFI for making a multi-scale PMC demonstrator part is investigated. The work culminated with the successful fabrication of a delta-stringer panel. This thesis makes several important contributions to the knowledge pertaining to multi-scale PMC processing and performance, and to RFI. Firstly, it provides a robust description of RFI processing beyond was it available in literature, through in-situ observations of resin flow and void formation. Secondly, it assesses the viability of RFI for producing multi-scale PMCs featuring CNTs. In-situ observations of RFI processing enabled the identification of mechanisms leading to a loss of CNT dispersion during processing, partly explaining the minimal improvements in the interlaminar properties of composites observed when adding CNTs to the matrix. Thirdly, the fabrication of a delta-stringer panel made of a multi-scale PMC was successful, making it the first validation of the scalability of out-of-autoclave RFI processing for manufacturing multi-scale PMCs. The work presented herein contributed to the dissemination of knowledge; one conference paper was presented at ICCM20 (20th International Conference on Composite Materials), and another was presented at CANCOM2017 (10th Canadian-International Conference on Composites), and one journal article written in collaboration with project partners was submitted to Composites Science and Technology.

The basis of marketing is dissemination of information. Enlightenment is provided through distribution towards targeted interest groups who consume the marketing message. The marketing works when the viewer buys into the emotion of the message. Experience of that emotion is based on the content´s context that appeals to the individual emotionally. This bachelor thesis aims at examination of how emotion and autobiographical memory can be used in marketing. Therefore investigate how context in film engages young people for recruitment in a technical niche industry. Context is formed based on how the individual perceives the aesthetic image. In addition, a context is created that the individual can relate to and spread it further in her social network. In this case, this study has experimented with the representation of the ventilation industry for recruitment. External analysis has been used for seeking information about the ventilation industry. Design methods have been used for communication of a vision upon approval during the iterative design process. Finally, image manipulation during film production was used to result in a recruitment film involving its target audience. The recruitment film depicts young people being recruited into the ventilation industry and two outsiders who show a desire for recruitment. Aesthetic symbolism conveys a context that embodies the feeling of employment rather than description of the experience. The actors' natural performance is reflected by the recipient who is experiencing the emotion. However, challenges during production have led us to revamp iterations of this project. Dilemmas such as the COVID-19 pandemic and our communication with the ventilation industry developed our design ability. With Löwgren’s and Stolterman’s example of how the designer handles dilemmas with retrospective reflection (Löwgren & Stolterman, 2004), our own creativity has been used in reflection upon what we could achieve despite the dilemma. The recruitment film will be distributed after the COVID-19 pandemic have diminished and the marketing will be put to the test. The film medium’s emotional connection to people can therefore be tested for further investigation.

Resumen
Approved for public release: Distribution is unlimited
Experimental results are presented which describe the development and structure of flow downstream of one row and downstream of two staggered rows of film-cooling holes with compound angle orientations. Results presented include distributions of iso-energetic Stanton number ratios, and adiabatic film-cooling effectiveness deduced from Stanton numbers using superposition. Also presented are plots showing the streamwise development of injectant distributions and streamwise development of mean velocity distributions. Spanwise averaged values of the adiabatic film-cooling effectiveness are highest for blowing ratio m=0.5 and decrease as blowing ratio increases for x/d less than 20. At farther downstream positions, spanwise averaged effectiveness values increase with blowing ratio, except for data obtained downstream of two rows of holes with a blowing ratio of 3.0 and data obtained downstream of two rows of holes with a blowing ratio of 3.0 and data obtained downstream of one row of holes with a blowing ratio of 4.0, where severe lift-off of injectant occurs. Spanwise averaged iso-energetic Stanton number ratios range between 1.0 and 1.4 and show little variation as x/d increases for each value of blowing ratio, however for each x/d, values increase with increasing blowing ratio.
