Resumen
BackgroundThe rough labour market in the Philippines affects the employability. The Philippines has a unemployment rate of in-between 7-8 percent. Therefore, many Filipinos are seeking employment overseas. Today, ten percent of the population are working on the globalized market. The globalization has affected the industry, where 28 percent of the entire worlds seafarers are Filipinos. Previous researches establish that Filipinos are popular because of their knowledge in English and due to their adaptability.PurposeOur aim is to examine why a group of Filipino seafarers choose their profession. The aim is also to examine how they experience their work on international vessels, as well as if they experience any changes in life when working as international seafarers.MethodWe made a qualitative study through a ship management located in Manila in the Philippines. We used semi-structured interviews, which were applied on ten seafarers.ResultsOur respondents mention the well-paid wages as an important reason when choosing to work as a seafarer. The wages are significant in order to support family members and to have the opportunity to live a wealthy life. The seafarers are working long periods away from home that causes homesickness. A good relationship with the crew is for many seafarers important, since they are living and working together.

Resumen
Filipino youth in Montreal have one of the highest rates of not being in school. Reports of behavioural problems, difficulties integrating, school failure and parent-child relationship difficulties have been reported among Filipino Youth who came to Canada after their mothers came to work in Canada under the Live-In Caregiver Program and its predecessor, the Foreign Domestic Movement. Using a sociocultural framework, I interviewed seven Filipino youth to examine the factors that interact to influence their educational outcomes. I discovered that several of their problems were related to long periods of family separation. The inability to develop a close relationship with their mother, along with economic struggles was a source of difficulty and directly affected educational outcomes. The focus of learning French in order to do well in the Quebec High School system is another factor affecting the ability of Filipino youth to succeed in school.

Resumen
The Filipino community is one of the most rapidly expanding non-English speaking background communities in Australia: a young vibrant community, well educated and qualified, possessing exceptional English language proficiency.Because of a significant proportion of Filipino-Australian intermarriage, and a large family-oriented immigration trend, many unique cross-cultural and social issues have emerged in the Filipino community. An examination of the literature revealed that many aspects on Filipino immigration to Australia are disproportionately studied, leading to the perpetuation of stereotypes and myths. There has been a tendency to focus on Filipino wives (not women), without reference to Filipino men, or to cultural values and experiences of Filipino families. The main objective of this study was to provide a broad sociological survey of Filipino immigrant families and latter generations in Australia. This study analysed the amalgamation of Filipino and Australian cultures through diverse family structures, and highlighted both differences and commonalities. The recognition of Filipino immigrants as active agents in their own settlement, provided an understanding of the adaptive reconstitution of Philipino culture through family interactions, child-rearing practices, employment and intergenerational experiences. An historical and cross-cultural perspective has employed to analyse the development of Filipino immigration to Australia and the socio-cultural issues affecting Filipino families.

Resumen

The Filipino culture recognizes the elderly as part of its human resources. As a culture that considers family as a basic unit of society, the elderly play a central role. When elderly Filipinos, those that are 65 years of age and older, migrate to the United States, they expect that their families are able to take care of them. However, work demands and living situations among family members prevent them from receiving proper care.

With the increasing population of elderly Filipinos in Palm Springs, demand for a new Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) is important. Agbayani's Residential Care Facility for Elderly Filipinos in Palm Springs, CA will offer supportive, quality, and long-term care for institutionalizing family in the facility. This business plan will show how Agbayani's RCFE intends on providing elderly Filipinos the quality of service and community they are accustomed to while maintaining a viable business.

Bayog, Maria Lourdes Geronimo. "Impact of Acculturation and Lifestyle Health Behaviors on Cardiovascular Health among Filipinos in California". Thesis, University of California, San Francisco, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10133432.

Texto completo
Resumen

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among all major racial and ethnic groups in the United States (US) and worldwide. Filipinos are the second largest Asian immigrant group in the US. Healthful lifestyle behaviors are cardioprotective factors, but have been under-, overestimated, or not studied among Asian American subgroups.

Objective: The purpose of this dissertation was to describe the cardiovascular health, cardiovascular mortality, cardiometabolic and lifestyle health behaviors, acculturation, and predictors associated with CVD in the Filipino American population.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted which focused on the cardiovascular mortality, disease and clinical and behavioral risks of Filipinos in the US. Two secondary analyses of the 2011-2012 California Health Interview Survey dataset were conducted which focused on the cardiovascular health, CVD, acculturation, metabolic and lifestyle health behavior of Filipino Americans (n = 555).

Results: The systematic review suggested that Filipino Americans are at high risk for developing cardiovascular disease, for having CVD-related clinical health risks, for engaging in unhealthy CVD lifestyle behaviors, and dying from CVD, as compared to White, non-Hispanic and other Asian Americans in general and by gender. The prevalence of CVD was 7.4% among Filipinos in California. Hypertension, diabetes, physical inactivity, being overweight/obese, and inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables were prevalent among Filipinos. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that only hypertension was a significant predictor of CVD, controlling for the effects of age, gender, being born in the US, and diabetes. When taking into consideration acculturation factors in chronic diseases and health behaviors, US-born Filipinos had a significantly lower proportion of chronic diseases as compared to Filipinos not born in the US. Filipinos who lacked English proficiency reported more hypertension as compared to Filipinos who reported proficiency in English. A higher proportion of several positive health behaviors were reported among Filipinos not born in the US and those who did not speak English at home ate the recommended 35 or more servings per week of fruits and vegetables compared to their counterparts.

Conclusions: Further research is needed for culturally-appropriate interventions, education, and prevention programs which focus on health behaviors and chronic diseases, such as CVD, for Filipino Americans.

Cases, Rizza Kaye. "Changing ties, ambivalent connections: mobilities and networks of Filipinos in London and New York metropolitan areas". Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2018. https://hdl.handle.net/11572/367958.

Resumen
The role of social networks in creating and sustaining migration flows, as well as in the adjustment and settlement of migrants, has long been recognized in migration studies. However, cross-fertilization between migration research and network approaches is still uncommon. Utilizing a mixed-method network approach, this study contributes in furthering the understanding of how migrant networks operate. Migrant networks are conceptualized as embedded in dynamic and changing systems, and shown as evolving depending on various contexts and situations. Examined are ego-centric networks of the 134 respondents (58 in London and 76 in New York) in three migration phases: before coming to London or New York; initial period of adjustment; and the current network as a result of the subsequent process of settlement in the place of destination (in total, 402 network maps). In particular, compared are three different occupational groups – nurses, domestics, and care workers. Conceptually dividing the migration process in three phases provided the opportunity to study network dynamics and networking practices, albeit retrospectively. Eliciting migrant networks was embedded within in-depth interviews using both electronic and paper-based network visualization. The findings suggest contrasting network composition in two global cities and across the three occupational groups. In New York, familial ties play an almost exclusive role in facilitating and supporting the movement of Filipino migrants. In London, most of the research participants relied on former employers (in the case of domestic workers) or recruitment agencies (in the case of nurses and care workers in institutional facilities) to facilitate their move. These differences in pre-migration networks then shaped subsequent network formations, adjustments, and settlement experiences. Findings also illustrate that although networks have supportive influence on facilitation of the move and post-migration settlement, familial and co-ethnic ties can also be exploitative to the newly-arrived and undocumented migrants. Situating the particular cases in macro-level context, the study explores how the narratives of attaining the good life through overseas work are interconnected to the need and demand for care labor in the US and the UK as well as the Philippine state-led marketization of high-quality workers as an export commodity.

Resumen
The subaltern is a recurrent literary figure in Mexican narrative. The objective of this thesis is to investigate three ethnic groups – indeed, subalterns – in Mexico which include: Afro-Mexicans, indigenous groups, and Filipino colonial subjects from the perspectives of the Mexican Revolution, post-revolutionary Mexico, and the conquest of the Philippines in the sixteenth century. The principal characters play crucial roles in events shaping the history and culture of Mexico and thus demonstrate their importance to the country's development while also revealing the reality of subalterns. The literary research shows that trying circumstances or a lack of self-identity were the main causes for a character to be or become a subaltern in addition to their inherent ethnic disadvantages. However, the characters who overcame their subaltern state often changed personality traits or adapted to their surroundings in order to be assimilated into the majority culture.

García, Laguía Alexandro-Xavier. "Documentation of Northern Alta: grammar, texts and glossary". Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/664081.

Texto completo
Resumen
The first chapter of the dissertation provides a description of the sociolinguistic background of Northern Alta and subsequently presents the methods used to collect data in the field, including recording methods, elicitation techniques, and type and level of annotations added to each recording. The structure and outputs of the documentary collection, including the metadata structure and organization of the data using the ELAN software, are then described. Finally, the way in which the data is presented in this dissertation is discussed at the end of the first chapter. Chapter 2 deals with the phonology of the language and discusses the orthography used in the corpus of annotated recordings. Chapter 3 examines morphology, with a focus on the morpho-phonological alternations occurring frequently in the language, which include assimilation, gemination, consonant deletion, epenthesis, nasal substitution, aphaeresis, stress change, syncope, vowel lengthening and vowel lowering. The chapter ends with a preliminary analysis of reduplication patterns. Chapter 4 discusses the types of phrases attested in Northern Alta, describing their possible constituent structure and syntactic functions. The second part of the chapter provides an overview of the possible clause types, which are defined in terms of the type of predicates they have. Three main clause types are defined: clauses with voice-marked predicate, clauses with voice-unmarked predicate and clauses with an Existential as predicate. Chapter 5 presents a classification of the parts of speech. The first part of the chapter deals with proforms, which include Personal Pronouns, Demonstratives and Interrogative Pronouns. The second part of the chapter introduces the different classes of function words. The third part of the chapter discusses the problems related to the classification of Northern Alta content words, and defines two major classes on the basis of morphological criteria, V-words and U-words. Other classes of content words include Adverbs, Existentials and another group of content words that we refer to as content words derived by affixes. Chapter 6 presents an analysis of case relations, conducted on the basis of the syntactic functions and semantic roles of the different case-marked constituents, such as Determiner Phrases, Pronouns and Demonstratives. The results of the analysis distinguish four different cases: Absolutive, Genitive, Oblique and Locative. Chapter 7 deals with the classification of V-words, distributed in four main classes, nonderived words, Potentive words, Stative words and Causative. Since V-words are defined in terms of their voice and aspectual morphology, we discuss voice affixation and aspectual inflection for each subclass, and illustrate them with glossed examples. Chapter 8 provides interlinear morpheme glossing for a twenty-five minute monologue that was recorded with native speaker Ginalyn Garcia. The monologue was recorded in a place called Minero, an area where the Alta used to dwell in the past but decided to abandon when they settled in the barangays. The contains a high number of Demonstratives, including phrases where the Demonstrative appears in the article slot of a DP. The video provides an additional value to the text given that many of these Demonstratives are accompanied by gestures. The text is also valuable from a historical perspective as it offers a number of stories from the time the Alta were living there. Finally, Chapter 9 provides a glossary of the language which was compiled by extracting the lexical data of the database that was created using the SIL software Fieldworks Language Explorer. The chapters begins with an introduction to the glossary, in which the sources of words, the content of an entry, as well as other related problems are discussed. The second part of the chapter contains the Northern Alta-English glossary and the third part of the chapter provides an English-Northern Alta reversal index.

The reopening of Japan and the transformation during the Meiji period had regional implications linked to the intensification of the relationship with the Asian colonies of the Spanish empire during the second half of the 19th century. In the context of the relationships initiated with the project for the Japanese-Spanish treaty of 1868, it is possible to highlight three historic processes. First is the Spanish project to join the unequal treaty system established in Japan. Secondly is the role of the Philippine, Marianas and Caroline islands within the nanshin-ron 南進論 or “theories of the advance towards the South Seas” to promote the penetration of the Japanese interest in the Nanyō 南洋 or “South Seas”. Lastly is the process of strengthening linkages between Japan and the Philippines during the last decade of this century. The analysis of these processes allows us to observe how the decline of a Spanish empire trying to maintain its Asian colonies was parallel to the rise of Japan as a new power, which explored new possibilities to expand its interests in the region where these colonies were located.

This doctoral thesis is inserted in the confluence of several historiographic trends that have gained interest in the last decades in Spain. These are, on the one hand, the study of the economic, social, political and cultural relations of the Hispanic colonial space of the Pacific -that is, of Philippine Islands- which constituted the last colonial edge of the Hispanic Empire. Especially since the celebration of the fourth centenary of the discovery of America, research on the relations between the old metropolis and its colonies has been revitalized, both in the American territories and in the Pacific islands. On the other hand, in the last decades the studies on the Society of Jesus have stopped being limited to the historians of the own order, always pressured by this one, so that researchers of diverse specialties have deepened in their history and trajectory and in their influence in the historical processes of early modern times, fleeing from the simplistic and apologetic vision of the Jesuit authors. This new look is integrated into the renewal of cultural and religious history in our country, which has focused on the analysis of discourses and cultural practices, in our case of religious orders in the Hispanic world, where the Jesuits stand out. The Ignatians, as religious, cultural and also political agents of the border areas, have always constituted exceptional spectators of the interaction between the metropolis and its colonies. However, both in the study of the Ignatian Institute and in the Philippine colonial world there is a gap in the nineteenth century, that chronological space between modernity and contemporaneity that, historiographically, has been orphan. It is for this reason that our geo-chronological framework is the nineteenth-century Philippines, where the Society of Jesus returned after almost a century of absence. The objective of this thesis is to trace the trajectory of the Ignatian Institute in the Philippine Islands since its return in 1859 until the end of Spanish sovereignty over the islands in 1898. The uniqueness of the study lies in the third historiographic current in which this is inserted work: the so-called “history of emotions”, a new theoretical and methodological approach still under development, but in expansion, especially since the turn of the century. The thesis is not focused on the institutional discourse of the Company, but on the particular perception that the workers of the order had of the reimplantation of the corporation in the Philippines and of its subsequent evolution, and especially in the personal and emotional dimension. Thus, given that there is no compilation of the Society of Jesus in the nineteenth-century Philippine Islands, the transit of the order in the islands has been reflected, with its educational work in the Ateneo and the Escuela Normal de Maestros in Manila, its scientific advances in the capital’s Observatory, its missionary deployment on the island of Mindanao and its political position and influence on the Philippine Revolution. But, above all, it has been prioritized the reconstruction of the life experience of those Jesuits in the Philippines and especially of each individual. The foundation of the study is the handwritten correspondence of those nineteenth century Jesuit missionaries, which are preserved in the Historical Archive of the Society of Jesus in Catalonia. Far from the bucolic version offered by the official works of the religious order, the original uncensored letters discover a silenced reality that demystifies the traditional representation of the “perfect Jesuit” and that demonstrates the existence of a heterogeneous, plural, conflictive and riddled community of weaknesses, fears, doubts and thoughts inadequate to his condition, completely affected by the hard life in the missions.

The authors examine the history of immigrant military service in the United States, explore the motivations of noncitizen enlistees, and analyze the military performance of noncitizens relative to that of citizen enlistees. Information sources include a comprehensive review of literature, focused interviews with a small sample of noncitizen enlistees, and cohort data files of enlisted personnel who entered the military from 1990 through 1998. The history of noncitizen service corresponds roughly to the nation's history of immigration and naturalization policy, with military service having offered immigrants economic benefits, as well as a path toward assimilation. Service by noncitizens has also provided the country a way to meet its military manpower needs. The results of statistical analyses suggest noncitizens have lower predicted rates of first-term attrition, and higher estimated rates of retention beyond the first term and promotion to E-4. The authors conclude that noncitizens provide a valuable source of manpower, and fulfill important roles as influencers for the next generation. Thus, it may be worthwhile to provide noncitizens more information about enlistment opportunities, and to implement unique reenlistment incentives including expedited green-card status for family members. Future research should examine specific ethnic categories of interest within the population of noncitizens.

Resumen
This thesis examines the Philippine labor diaspora in the United States, both historical and modern, with a specific focus on the modern period of migration to midsize urban places in Indiana. The historical or pre-1965 period is marked by two successive waves of movement to the United States, each of which is based upon different labor demands for unskilled labor. The modern period was initiated by the 1965 United States Immigration and Naturalization Act and is marked by far greater volumes of Filipinos entering the country. This most recent influx is characterized by significant numbers of professionals, an expression of the regional division of `skilled' labor migration flows between developing and developed countries associated with globalization. Quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews with 30 FilipinoAmerican professionals in six mid-size cities in Indiana examined topics of labor recruitment practices, secondary migration patterns, and the remittance practices and group formation associated with transnational identities.

Resumen
This dissertation explores the construction of Filipino national identity by examining the Philippine national government’s appropriation of Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) between 1975 and 2010. FMA’s nationalization offers a window into the larger dynamics of nation-building in the Philippines. Having been colonized for nearly four centuries (1565-1946), the Philippine national government reified the Filipino nation by appropriating older symbols as national ones, and with the purpose of articulating a unique Filipino national identity. The nationalization of FMA is analyzed using Benedict Anderson’s constructivist interpretation of nations as ‘imagined communities’. The dissertation argues that in order to understand the logic behind the national government’s nation-building project using FMA, Filipino postcolonial anxieties over national identity (or their perceived lack of) must be taken into consideration. In this regard, FMA’s nationalization is engaged with Anthony Smith’s concept of the ethnie (ethnic community). Studying the history of how decentralized indigenous martial arts practice became institutionalized in FMA clubs, the dissertation finds that FMA as an ethnographic concept was formulated mainly since the 1970s in consonance with its commercialization, increasing popularity and nationalization. By looking at how national identity is represented in FMA films and in reconstructions of the national hero Lapulapu, the dissertation argues that FMA practitioners seek to highlight their localized identities by inserting their own symbols and interpretations into the national identity being articulated. This process, termed the ‘reverse appropriation’ of nationalism, was a way for FMA clubs to preserve their local institutions and identities from being totally consumed by the nationalization and nation-building project.

Texto completo
This doctoral dissertation studies the presence of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines in the period 1581-1768. But the intention is not to write a complete history of the Jesuits in the archipelago, but to contrast the image that they tried to offer about themselves and their environment with the missionary reality that they carried out before the expulsion from the hispanic territory in the time of Carlos III. The work is divided in three parts, preceded by a preamble. This is a brief historic introduction to the Philippine colony, from the first contacts with Europeans to the half of the eighteenth century, marking the main political events and offering some information about the political, social and economic system of the colony. The first part is a digest of the historical trajectory of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines form 1581 to 1568. In the second part we offer elements for the understanding of the jesuit evangelic enterprise in the archipelago, from an inner view of the Society. From the analysis of a lot of letters, we analyse some fundamental topics in the construction process of the image of the Jesuits and their work in the Philippines. The first topic is about the precarious first years of the mission. The second one is about the organization in the different evangelization areas that were in charge of the Jesuits. Finally, the hard conditions that the missionary defied while working on the ground. The third part of the thesis approaches the cultural discourse that the members of the Society constructed about the nature of their missional action in the Philippines. First, we analyse the works of the official chroniclers of the Province of the Philippines, and the work of other “minor” authors. We also study the vision that the missionary had about the people that they potentially could evangelise, especially Filipino natives and Chinese. The image of the first was very influenced by the previous american experience, with the pattern of the “good savage” and the “monster” as a reference. Meanwhile, the vision of the Far East and their peoples had a centenary tradition, and was always an utopia for the colonisers of the Philippines.

Texto completo
Resumen
The study explores Filipino seafarers’ integration and cross-border practices using a transnational paradigm. As seafarers’ lives span the ship and the shore, a transnational framework entails looking at whether belongingness is manifested simultaneously and the extent to which this can be possible. The study’s multi-sited approach considers both the everyday realities in the community and on board the ship including the transnational linkages they maintain and deploy to remain part of both realms. The analyses show that seafarers’ repeated reincorporation and conformity in the community reflects how belongingness is largely constituted as aspirational at home. Integration on board, largely work-oriented and subject to a racialised hierarchy, favours less the social aspect of integration. The limited involvement in both contexts mutually reflects fringe belonging. Under conditions of high mobility, cross-border practices are constrained inasmuch as they are facilitated through access to communication technologies. The ties of reciprocity under extensive kin relations similarly accentuate the strain affecting connection at home. Such conflicting outcomes undermine the connectivity and continuity of social relations that is purportedly enhanced by linking across borders. Such ties are nonetheless employed as a strategy of counteracting labour insecurities despite the burden arising from such tenuous links. This thesis concludes that seafarers evince a form of transactional transnationalism such that they inhabit both worlds only if on board.

The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to investigate how the mentality of a missionary translator was like in a specific historical period and in a very different cultural context compared to his own. Based on a critical review of the postcolonial approach, the thesis proposes a complex study of the mentality of missionary translators, considering not only their commitment to the social and religious institutions of the moment but also to their own identity as religious and theologians. In the thesis, the analysis of their theological ideas allows us to shape an explanatory model for the understanding of the translation decisions they carried out, while the consideration of a modern theological perspective focused on the relationship between the Gospel and cultural diversity provides a critical model for evaluating the cultural attitudes underlying such decisions. The thesis verifies the applicability of this model in the historical period of the Middle Ages and in the context of the "discovery" of America, and this is followed by a focus on the case study of Spanish Dominicans translating Chinese in the Philippines between the 16th and 17th centuries, with the final objective of establishing the characteristics of the reasoning and the attitudes involved in their evangelizing and translating work among the Chinese "Sangleyes" in the colonial society of Manila. The thesis devotes special attention to the consideration of the problem of translating Christian terms into the Chinese language, as well as Chinese philosophical and religious concepts into Spanish in the five translation works on these topics produced by the Dominicans in this context. In the light of this research, the thesis demonstrates the complexity of the attitudes of Dominican translators towards Chinese culture and the impossibility, therefore, of interpreting in a univocal or dichotomous way the translation strategies that they took in their missionary work.

Resumen
Limited economic opportunity for many Filipinos has created substantial emigration of the country’s educated work force. The economic opportunities in the United States have attracted Philippine immigrants seeking employment opportunities. Thus, the U.S. now has a substantial foreign-born Filipino population. Although the majority of Philippine immigrants to the U.S. possess bachelor’s degrees or advanced degrees (Allard & Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2011; Camarota, 2012; Commission on Filipinos Overseas, 2012), many are underemployed or work in fields relatively unrelated to their education and experience. This thesis examines Philippine college and university graduates’ social networks, educational attainment, degree field, English language proficiency, immigration status, age, and gender, factors which influence and determine Philippine graduates’ employability in the U.S. labour market. The Triangulation Mixed Methods Design also known as the Concurrent Triangulation Design was employed to effectively measure the complex phenomenon of Philippine graduates’ employability by integrating quantitative and qualitative data sets. The null hypotheses for this thesis were rejected exclusive of age and gender differences. Data revealed employability was enhanced when Philippine graduates networked with Weak Ties during initial employment and continued to be advantageous for being adequately employed (i.e. resulted in lower underemployment). However, lower employability and underemployment negatively affected graduates with a bachelor’s degree (particularly a business-related degree), those who were less proficient in English, and those who were Green Card holders. The factors that were influential in the employability of Philippine graduates coincided with the labour market demands of the American employers sampled in this study. The thesis found that the current status of Philippine graduates has improved substantially with a higher percentage of the respondents obtaining jobs commensurate with their educational qualifications as opposed to their initial employment. Philippine graduates with medical technology degrees were particularly successful at obtaining jobs commensurate with their educational qualifications despite relatively few holding advanced degree, but on average this group had resided in the U.S. the longest. Graduates with business-related degrees continued to lag behind those in other degree fields and experienced lower employability and higher underemployment. Despite their initial employment disadvantage, these degree holders were less likely to pursue continuing education or receive additional U.S. school/educational credits. The findings of this thesis provide insight into the employability of Philippine graduates. Because of the sampling restrictions, the findings cannot be extrapolated beyond the scope of this research. These results should only be treated as indicative within the context of this research. However, they provide useful insights for policy-makers, stakeholders and academics in the Philippines.

Resumen
This qualitative study analyzed the experience of parenting within Filipino Overseas families as perceived by adult children. The impact of overseas workers is invaluable to the Philippine economy. The current study explored the dimensions of having a parent, mother or father, who is an overseas worker, acknowledging that there are clear challenges of parenting children with the barriers of geographical distance. International long distance telephone interviews were conducted with adult children of Filipino overseas workers. Results from consensual qualitative research analysis (C. E. Hill et al., 2005; C. E. Hill, B. J. Thompson, & E. N. Williams, 1997) indicated two significant themes: parental work overseas was for the family benefit and the communal nature of childrearing.

Resumen
With increased life expectancy, more individuals will need to rely on caregivers and/or caregiving services. Filipino Americans are reluctant to depend on outside help when it comes to caring for their family members. There was a gap in the literature concerning the specific impact of the caregiving role on Filipino Americans and how cultural values affect the care provided to their family members. The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain understanding of how Filipino cultural values and life roles affected Filipino Americans' experiences of caregiving. The conceptual framework included the sociocultural stress and coping model. The central research question for the study was used to explore the personal impact of caregiving for Filipino Americans and the sociocultural factors affecting this role. A phenomenological research design guided the data collection and analysis process. Individual, semistructured interviews were conducted with 8 participants, recruited from several Catholic Church groups and Filipino community groups located in the Southwestern region of Houston, Texas. Data were analyzed using Moustakas' steps for phenomenological data analysis and 7 themes were identified: responsibility of caregiving, impact of caregiving on employment status, impact and importance of religion to caregivers, impact of Filipino heritage on caregivers, impact of care recipient's illness on the caregiver and recipient, resources for caregivers, and reflections on the caregiver experience. Filipino Americans are unique in their practices to provide care for their family members rather than relying on outside providers and institutions. This study may result in positive social change by understanding how societal supports can encourage a model of care based on cultural and familial values rather than outside institutional care.
