Texto completoThe work presented in this manuscript deals with the optimization of the process of deposition of thin films on a moving stainless steel wire. Two inverted cylindrical magnetrons (ICMs) are used to study different aspects of sputtering. At first, an analytical model allowing the evaluation of the thermal contributions to the heating of the substrate is confronted with series of measurements. The results obtained are conclusive but suffer from the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field, which is responsible for the localized loss of high energy secondary electrons. In order to limit the thermal contribution of the charges on the substrate, auxiliary anodes designed to recover the energy flow, are added to each end of the magnetrons. Their influence on the plasma distribution, the microstructure and the chemical composition of the coatings is then discussed. In a second part, the study of reactive sputter deposition with ICMs highlights the need to homogenize the magnetic field in the cathodes. A discussion is then conducted on the influence of the magnetic field on the distribution of deposition rates within the magnetrons and an analytical model, aimed at reproducing the deposition profiles, is developed on the basis of the results obtained. A parametric study (pressure, target – substrate distance, magnetic field strength) is also performed to determine optimal deposition conditions in an ICM. Finally, finite element modeling using commercial software closes the manuscript

Texto completoThis research addresses the ways in which female artists have been working in the field of sculpture since 1950. Irrespective of the medium of expression they have chosen to explore, and of the works they have given rise to, the aim here is to understand the meeting between a work of art conceived by a female sculptor and the way in which it is viewed externally. This meeting marks the confrontation of two worlds: that of the observer − subject to his or her own perceptions and offering an often slanted interpretation and reading of the work − and that of the sculptress whose constructed work is subjected to judgement. The differences, and even misunderstandings, caused by these perspectives on sculptural works by women viewed externally lead to a deeper questioning of the artistic, material and intellectual routes followed by creative females in the area of sculpture. What are the material and symbolic elements that guide their searches in this art form? What are their sources of inspiration? What are they seeking to express via their artistic alternatives? Answering these questions may be difficult, but it can lead to the core of creation and, notably, to a perception of its processes. Although female sculptors have followed numerous paths, it nonetheless appears certain that some of them have striven to develop, over and above a physical mode of expression, a language that will reveal the truths within them. The expression of this language, of which they know the mysteries, is based on giving form to textile materials, using two principles of construction: needle and thread. Beyond a purely material approach, female sculptors come into contact with an imaginary territory of mythical tales that surround weaving, and the characters that people those tales such as Arachne, Penelope, Clotho or Atropos. In these inter-linked dimensions, where the intensity of working creatively with textiles melds with the contact with a world of symbols, weaving, creative women are continuing to trace out one of the significant paths they have been following in sculpture since 1950

Texto completoMain objective of this work is to study the washing behavior of textile based connections developed by using conductive threads. Two metallic threads (M-l & M-2) and one silver coated thread (S.C) have been used to make samples. The samples have been fabricated with different numbers of stitches per cm by using these conductive threads. After several tests it has been concluded to use the metallic thread in the bobbin of Jock stitch machine or embroidery machine. Embroidery machine has been used to make the samples. The embroidery has been done with zigzag stitch and samples were made. Three different distances between two consecutive stitches have been used that are 1mm, 2mm and 3mm. Samples have been characterized for mechanical (shear & bending) properties, using a KAWABATA testing instrument. Considerable differences have been observed among three types of threads. Graphical representation made it easy to highlight the behavioural aspects of each type. Then at other series of samples have been produced having different stitch densities. These samples then analyzed for electric properties by using mulitmeter, teraohm meter. Samples were also analyzed for signal transmission properties with the help of a frequency generator and an oscilloscope. The attenuation and phase angles were calculated at different frequencies ranging from 100Hz to 11MHz. Very interesting behaviour of the circuits have been observed and discussed in detail. AIL the samples are then subjected to washing and were again tested for all properties (shearing, bending, electric, and signal transmission). The tests have been repeated after each wash and observed the changes. In the final part of thesis all the results have been discussed, reasons have been identified and conclusion has been made

Texto completoThis dissertation in Fine Arts questioned about the undetected of our creations, in space, in time or physically and is an invitation to observe what is easily missed, that touches and goes through us, without our noticing. It is a study on subtle power and how it influences certain movements, plastic, poetic and scientific practices. The first part will focus on metaphors surrounding the thread and the acrobat, they become the model to reflect upon the potential of the unnoticeable and to consider an active form of disorientation. On the one hand, structure made of thread and wefts of fabric allow us to think the value of empty spaces since it is these gaps that are responsible for the suppleness, the resistance or the opacity of the fabric. Then the interstice, the interval or the in-between become essential. On the other hand, the tightrope walker is the one acting on the rope. He is in a risky position, struggling with disequilibrium, doubts, hesitations and he needs to renew his attention after each step according to his physical feelings and atmospheric conditions. The metaphors of the tightrope walker creates an imaginary scenario of our own disorientations in front of what evades us, at the edge of our space, rhythm, vision or listening, which is not easily perceptible. The second part points out elements in our environment which make us become tightrope walkers by inducing unsteadiness and disorientation. What are the physical, physiological, psychological or social conditions for disequilibrium ? What can be accommodated at the limit of our space, at the edge of our vision and in the depth of our hearing ? How certain actions broaden our vision towards the unnoticeable of our environment and to reveal its potential ?
