Resumen
This thesis examines Carl Jung's autobiography, Memories, Dreams, Reflections. Within this text the reader is provided with rich and profound insights into the life of Carl Gustav Jung. This document sheds enormous light on the personality of one of this century's most important figures in the world of psychology and religion. For a generation after Jung's death, scholars have depended almost exclusively on Memories, Dreams, Reflections for their biographical facts about Jung. This text is invaluable for data about his early childhood, and vital for the description of the catastrophic break with Freud. While the autobiography is a summary of the whole of Jung's life, this work examines that life with an eye to the early years in the vicarage. The writer has a special interest in exploring Jung's relationship to his father, the Reverend Paul Jung, a kinship not only vital and revealing but to this point in time, a relationship which has been largely ignored. To date there has been little data available on the Reverend Paul Jung, and even less research on his influence upon his son, Carl. Within this dissertation the reader will discover new information, fresh insights into Jung's father and his lasting influence upon his quite remarkable son. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Resumen
Thesis advisor: Andrew Sofer
In this thesis, it is my task to explore Shakespeare’s social analysis concerning the patriarchal structure of the family and the economic implications of this system. Four plays in particular, King Lear, Henry IV, As You Like It, and The Tempest resonate with these thematic elements. At the heart of these plays is the issue I call the paternal dilemma; the father or patriarch is a mere human, cannot live forever, and therefore needs to rely on an inheritance scheme to ensure the continuation of his line. This problem sees the institution of inheritance (namely, primogeniture) as a solution or antidote to mortality. In an investigation of these issues, I place myself in an already rich field of secondary criticism, examining how genre and family structure combine in what is ultimately a conservative understanding of the Elizabethan family

Resumen
Although there has been a new wave of research on fathering, little has focused specifically on the father and son relationship during adolescence. Previous research has documented that fathers and their daughters tend to distance themselves and disengage at the onset of menarche; however, the study and analysis of what happens to fathers and sons during the onset of puberty has been practically neglected. Several studies through the mid 80s and early 90s documented that parents and children tend to separate during adolescence, but only scant research has been conducted since that time. The goal of this study was to advance the knowledge base of father and son relationships during adolescence by examining the associations between pubertal status and psychosocial status, pubertal status and father involvement and psychosocial status and father involvement. Erikson's theory of psychosocial development was well-suited to guide this research because of his emphasis on development through the life-span. Particularly, Erikson's postulates regarding identity, adolescence and mid life were helpful in driving the research methodology and explaining the findings. First, the Peterson Development Scale was used to assess pubertal status from both a father and son viewpoint. The measure was also useful in categorizing the young men studied into three pubertal groups. Second, the Parental Support Inventory was used to measure father-son involvement from the perspective of both fathers and their sons. Third, to measure the son's psychosocial status, the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status was employed, and to measure the father's psychosocial status, the Identity Status Inventory was utilized. Findings suggest that pubertal status does impact psychosocial development. In fact, there were statistically significant differences reported by fathers and sons between the three pubertal groups (pre, trans, and post) on the psychosocial status scale of foreclosure. The young men in the study scored high on the foreclosed scale in prepuberty and low in post-puberty. Typically, young men who score high on the foreclosure scale adopt the values and beliefs of their parents and rarely engage in questioning. Hence, as young men move through pubertal development, they begin to separate from the ideologies of their parents and seek out their own beliefs and opinions. Another finding suggested that as young men move through puberty, involvement with their father decreases, particularly on the dimensions of physical affection and general support. This study also demonstrated that fathers and sons do not perceive involvement or satisfaction in the same way. In fact, what fathers and sons need from each other appears to be different. Another significant finding was that fathers who score high on the information orientation scale (thoroughly consider relevant information before decisions and commitments are made) and the normative information scale (primarily concerned with the expectations of others) were less likely to have a son who scored high on the diffusion scale (low commitment, low exploration, live for the moment, impulsive). Finally, fathers who score high on the diffuse scale (procrastinating or failing to resolve conflicts) are less involved with their sons when compared to fathers who score high on the information or normative scales. In fact, fathers who score high on the information orientation and sons who score high on the foreclosed orientation are more involved with each other than any other psychosocial group.

Resumen
Parents play a vital role in the education of their children. Apart from providing material resources, they are also responsible for enhancing what is learnt at school and providing relevant background information about their children that is helpful to teachers. This research project focuses on engaging fathers in the education of their sons. It explores the roles played by fathers in the education of their sons and some of the barriers they encounter in trying to work with schools. For various reasons, fewer fathers engage in the education of their children yet they can play a vital role. Although the contribution to education by mothers cannot be ignored, this thesis contributes new knowledge to the unique influence that fathers have in the education of their sons. This enquiry is based on a qualitative case study carried out on a specialist secondary school in the UK. The participatory action research case study methodology adopted in this PhD thesis provided an opportunity to make an in-depth study of the phenomena. A triangular approach was employed in which the views of the fathers, boys and teachers were considered through interviews, document analysis and observations. The enquiry used a participatory action research approach in which participants were involved in the identification of the problem, implementation of an action and reflection of the whole process. Fathers, boys and teachers in the school participated in a series of meetings to suggest ways in which the school could improve the engagement of fathers. The research helped the school to formulate policy that improved the achievement of boys through the engagement of their fathers. Management at the school has taken on board most of the recommendations and is now in the process of improving and strengthening relationships with parents and fathers in particular. The school has employed a family liaison officer responsible for working with parents and advising staff on how to engage better with fathers. This research project has been driven by my own experiences as a father, teacher and son. It contributes new knowledge in the form of a "Father Engagement Model" designed for the school to engage and maintain relations with more fathers. The style of writing adopted in this thesis has been aimed at engaging a wide range of readers including the fathers and their sons of various reading levels.

Resumen
Many authorities believe that our relationship with our parents has an effect on later relationships. Attachment theory and the more recent "men's movement" have focused on parents and their role in the development of the child. To study fathers' influence, 122 male undergraduate students were surveyed at a mid-sized Indiana university regarding their relationships with their father, friend, and romantic partner. The average age of the participants was 20.7 years, and the majority of the students were either Black (11.5%) or White (85.2%). Although 70.5% of the participants had married parents and 23.8% had divorced parents, most men (89.3%) referred to their biological father in completing the survey. The present study found that closeness to fathers while growing up did not predict closeness within the men's friendships. Father closeness was predictive of romantic relationship closeness but did not predict whether or not the men would be involved in such a relationship. Individual differences prevail, however, as information obtained from personal interviews indicated that some men believed their father influenced both their friendships and their romantic relationships.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: Although Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is acknowledged to have an impact on families as a whole, few studies have investigated psychosocial aspects. Investigation of fathers in paediatric psychology literature is also neglected, and available DMD studies focus on maternal adjustment. This study addresses calls for both, research within the area of DMD and inclusion of fathers. Aims: The overall aim was to investigate psychosocial adjustment, and experiences, of fathers of sons with DMD by studying associations between paternal adjustment and: •boys’ functioning (physical and psychological) •perceived paternal involvement in condition management •perception of support •fathers’ experiences of parenting a son with DMD. Methods: A mixed methods approach, incorporating questionnaires evaluating level of boys’ functional ability (Functional Disability Inventory) and psychiatric adjustment (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire); paternal involvement in condition management (Dads Active Disease Support Scale); paternal ratings of satisfaction, and paternal adjustment (General Health Questionnaire), was used. In-depth interviews were also undertaken, and written accounts of experiences and views recorded. Results: 50 fathers completed questionnaires and 48 provided written accounts, with a cohort of 15 participating in interviews. Paternal adjustment was comparable to that of mothers, as noted in previous studies, with 38% above cut off for risk of psychological problems. Predictors of paternal adjustment were boys’ psychosocial adjustment, perceived amount of involvement in condition management and perceived support from friends. Themes emerging from the qualitative strand were 1) loss and acceptance; 2) support versus isolation; 3) the fight for resources and 4) race against time. Conclusion: Findings emphasise the need for bio-psychosocial interventions, acknowledging fathers’ needs, role, and involvement in their child’s condition. Alongside consideration of the family, the psychosocial impact for fathers should be acknowledged as being equally important to dealing with physical issues surrounding DMD. Professional awareness is needed of the emotional implications, and issues fathers face.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Legend, the Madman, and the Prophet is a memoir about fathers and sons, about the experience of being a son of a man of the Rocky Mountains, a legend grown old. The narrative centers around my struggle with the fact that my father had grown old and sick while I was still young, and my consequent search for other fathers, employing two primary examples—a martial-arts instructor from my high-school years who was later exposed as a pedophile, and the eccentric figure of my ex-girlfriend’s wealthy and traditional Egyptian-American father. The memoir relates the story of my father’s impact on my perception of manhood, my own experience with depression in the wake of his death, and the story of a spiritual search he began in me, which led me from my boyhood Mormonism toward eventual conversion to Islam. This is a story about fathers and sons, about what it means to lose a father, to want a father, and to learn to be a father to myself.

Axup, Tina E. J. "Exploring the experiences of fathers raising sons with Asperger syndrome : an interpretative phenomenological analysis". Thesis, University of East London, 2012. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/1791/.

Texto completo
Resumen
My study explores the life-worlds of fathers who are raising a son diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. It was inspired by previous research where I considered the emotional journeys of parents and the support offered for parenting this group of children (Axup, 2003). Mothers were more accessible and willing to take part than fathers. Findings suggested that fathers had a very different experience from mothers and were rarely heard. This study seeks to uncover this group of fathers' specific needs and recognises they have an important story to tell. Exploring fathers' stories could aid both understanding and support offered, whilst giving them a voice. Fathers' journeys suggested cyclical patterns, where events and transitions surrounding their sons triggered feelings of denial, guilt, worry, frustration, hope and fear (Roll-Pettersson, 2001). I took a relativist epistemological stance, whereby multiple realities are assumed and social construct, interpretivism and the concept of phenomena are important in uncovering how participants make sense of their experience (Smith, Flowers and Larkin, 2009). The methodology I selected was Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Nine fathers took part in individual semi-structured interviews where I explored their experiences of raising a son with Asperger Syndrome. I analysed my data case by case and identified six main themes. These revolved around different aspects of selfhood which featured within the fathers' stories: Self through time, the importance of identity, relating to the syndrome, position within the family dynamic, their place in the world, and the practice of parenting. I also explored core values and beliefs in relation to fatherhood and their sons' difficulties. My findings revealed the significance of the phenomena of being a father raising a son with Asperger Syndrome pervading all aspects of their lives. All had a great deal to say, yet some had never been heard by family, friends or professionals. Although a small-scale study, the narratives are supported by literature which suggested that fathers are frequently isolated by their families and professionals (Page, Whitting and Mclean, 2008). Research implications for iii Educational Psychologists and wider children's service professionals suggested pro-active work is needed to help fathers engage with their sons and services. Fathers felt a caseworker whom they could trust would help them make sense of bureaucratic systems and provide support from the early years, during diagnosis and transition periods into adolescence and adulthood.

Resumen
Ernest J. Gaines’ affirmation that Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons (1862) was “as a Bible when I was writing Catherine Carmier” (1964) is the starting point for a comparative analysis of the two novels and the literary mode of the pastoral they deploy. Given that in the United States the Southern Pastoral was employed by the authors of the plantation tradition as a means to conceal the reality of slavery under a façade of idyll, African American authors like Gaines followed example set by the 19th-century Russian author, and through their narratives reconnected to the natural landscape without sentimentalizing the sometimes hard experience of ordinary people. Serfdom in Russia and slavery in the US provide a common ground to address philosophical questions concerning man’s relation to nature and to humanity as a whole. My thesis focuses in particular on the theme of death in an Arcadian world and on the influence of Schopenhauer’s thought in the two texts.

Resumen
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Jacqueline Marie Wilcox, for the Master of Science degree in COMMUNITY NUTRITION, presented on October 19,2012, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: HOW FATHERS AFFECT BODY IMAGE PERCEPTION IN THEIR SONS:A COMPARISON OF FOUR AGE GROUPS MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Sara Long Roth This study examines the role a father or male role model plays in affecting his son's body image perception via comments and feedback. A cross-sectional study design was conducted to examine 396 men who ranged in age from 18-92 years old. Men who participated in this study were evaluated as a whole as well as four different age groups (18-31, 32-47, 48-66, 67+). Results indicate most men did not receive feedback from their fathers in regard to altering their muscularity or to gain or lose weight. Participants who received feedback reported positive paternal comments about body shape, weight and muscularity. Men aged 18-31 received more positive paternal feedback than any other age group. Positive body image perception was significantly associated with body mass index and high self-esteem. Results of this study suggest other social factors may be connected with negative body image perception.

Resumen
The father's role in families where there has been domestic violence is now known to have significance impact on future intergenerational abuse (Dutton, 1998). Fathers who shame and physically abuse their sons are putting these young boys at risk for becoming potential abusers. However, even though this risk factor is known, the literature review conducted through this study shows the absence of information on the father/child relationship. Also absent was a knowledge on parenting groups available for these men. In attempting to address this gap in the research and to gain a better understanding of how these fathers experienced the parenting group, I realized I first needed to understand how these men experienced their lives. Using interpretive inquiry, three men were interviewed about their understanding of their life experiences. The men chosen for the research had a history of domestic abuse within the family. Data collection included observations made during the parenting group, profiles gathered from intake files, and transcripts from the interviews. The data were analyzed for themes, patterns, confirmations, and contradictions, and then interpreted to reconstruct the men's stories. The findings of the study indicate several topics common to all three men: custody, visitation, the role of the father, emotional functioning, and past and present relationships. Interwoven among the topics were the themes of inefficacy, personal care, emotional nurturance and attachment, and awareness of the way they use language. Their stories echo the same message: they love their children and want to be with them.

Resumen
Genetic predisposition and exposure to alcohol and stress increase the risk for alcoholism, possibly by forming a threefold interaction. This is suggested by various aspects of alcohol-induced stress response dampening in offspring of alcoholics. We tested whether such an interaction is also revealed by prolactin secretion, which is predominantly controlled by hypothalamic dopamine. Plasma prolactin was measured during four experimental days in 26 young males with a paternal history of alcoholism (PHA) and in 22 family history negative (FHN) controls. A public speaking stress paradigm was applied on the first 2 days, and a non-stress acoustic startle experiment on the others. Before the tests, subjects drank alcohol (0.6 g/kg) or placebo in a randomized, double-blind crossover design. During placebo experiments, prolactin levels significantly increased after stress, but not after startle, and did not differ between risk groups. Alcohol administration significantly increased prolactin before stress and during startle in both groups, did not alter stress-induced prolactin stimulation in FHN, but significantly attenuated the prolactin stress response in PHA subjects. The alcohol effects on prolactin, cortisol, and adrenocorticotropin stress response were positively interrelated with each other. These data confirm that alcohol specifically dampens the stress response in PHA but not FHN subjects. Since prolactin responses to stress alone and alcohol alone were normal in PHA, we conclude that this genetic effect is not related to altered physiology of the hypothalamic dopaminergic system, but to risk-group specific alcohol effects on hierarchically higher brain areas controlling the stress response in general.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to evaluate African American sons' perceptions of their fathers' influence on their decision whether to pursue higher education. This research has qualitatively explored the connection between fathers' influence and sons' decision whether to pursue higher education. Data collection consisted of a preliminary focus group discussion, two rounds of individual interviews, and a post focus group discussion. Themes that emerged from participants' stories were: (a) similar definitions of the term"father", (b) perceptions of fathers' educational level vs. being a role model, (c) thoughts regarding fathers' emotions and masculinity, (d) beliefs that fathers have an influence on sons' decisions whether to pursue higher education, (e) similar beliefs toward higher education, (f) justification for their level of education, (g) feelings of college being an inconceivable thought for some males, and (h) similar spiritual beliefs. Data obtained from interviews and focus group discussions resulted in The Black Father-Son Median Theory.

Resumen

This study argues that the Virginia slavery debate of 1831-32 was an occasion when radical transformations in the nature of the proslavery argument occurred and where changing popular perceptions about the role of government can be seen. Since the Revolution, government in Virginia had been based upon the Lockean concept of the inviolable right of private property and of property's central relationship to government. During the slavery debate, when the initial emancipationist plan, which addressed the slaveholders' property rights, was dismissed as impractical, a more radical antislavery doctrine was proposed that challenged traditional beliefs concerning property and the function of government. This doctrine was the legal concept of eminent domain, the right of the state to take private property for public purposes without the consent of the owner. Arguing that slavery threatened public safety, emancipationists called on the state government to act within its eminent domain powers to confiscate this harmful species of property.

In the climate of increased public fear, brought on by the recent slave insurrection in Southampton County, this particular emancipationist argument subverted the traditional necessary evil justification for slavery. Defenders of slavery became impaled upon the horns of a dilemma. If they continued to acknowledge that slavery was evil, then they risked engendering the expansive government powers that the emancipationists advocated. If slavery could no longer be justified as a necessary evil, then upon what grounds must its defense now rest? In the face of this dilemma, defenders abandoned their traditional apologetic justification and instead advanced the idea of slavery as a "positive good."

Resumen
The United States has the highest teen pregnancy and adolescent STD rates of any industrialized nation. Numerous factors are involved in adolescent sexual decision-making and the social-ecological framework suggests that there are multiple levels of influence on adolescent development, including familial. Utilizing survey data from the Virginia Abstinence Education Initiative (VAEI), this project specifically explores paternal influences on adolescent sexual behavior and beliefs by examining paternal residence in the home, perceived paternal figure sexual beliefs, and father-child relationship factors. Results indicate that paternal figures influence their daughters' and sons' sexual behaviors as well as beliefs. Differences in paternal figure influence across gender were found as well. Those endeavoring to develop more effective teen pregnancy prevention and abstinence education programs may consider the involvement of paternal figures in future efforts.

Resumen
This study was predicated on the belief that a father brings something unique to the family, thus, making irreplaceable contributions to the life of a child. Fathers are unique in that they provide something different from mothers. They are irreplaceable because when they are absent, children are said to suffer emotionally, intellectually, socially, and behaviorally. The contributions of fathers to a child's well being cannot be fully replaced by better programming, ensuring child support programs, or even by well-intentioned mentoring programs. A review of literature relevant to delinquency and adolescent behavioral and academic success revealed that there may be a correlation between a male role-model and the teaching of self-control and socially appropriate behaviors. Indeed, much of what the large body of research pertaining to fatherhood reveals is that, compared to children raised in two-parent homes, children who grow up without their fathers have significantly worse outcomes, on average, on almost every measure of well being (Horn, 2002). In addition, an understanding of the factors that may influence delinquent behaviors, in particular within the family unit, can better equip parents and educators to support those who may be exhibiting the beginning signs of delinquent behavior. This study was designed to determine the influence of, or correlation between, juvenile delinquency and the presence or absence of a father-figure in a child's life. Responses made on the Delinquency Check List between two sample sets, delinquent and non-delinquent adolescents, were examined. The study attempted to determine if delinquent activity among adolescents was differentiated by the absence or presence of a father-figure in a child's life. This study also investigated the frequency and severity of delinquent activities between adolescents in the determined sample groups.

Resumen
The dissertation is a collection of eighteen short stories. These stories relate the life experiences of the first-person narrator and chronicle a period of twenty years. They are arranged in five thematic groups: Expectations, Questions, Lighter Moments, Answers, and Separation. The focus of each one represents the narrator's experiences with his father, as the narrator attempts to understand a man who exerts such control over his life. Expectations contains three stories, with the first depicting the narrator's earliest association with his father. The other two represent significant growth experiences. The five stories in the Questions portion focus on the youthful narrator as he tries to understand the reasons behind his father's values and moral lessons. In the section, Lighter Moments, there are four stories in which the narrator is in his late teens and recalls four incidents that lacked the usual serious undertones prevalent in most of his experiences with his father. Answers is composed of three stories in which the narrator, nearing manhood, struggles with feelings of disillusionment with the life his father has planned for him, as well as the realization that his father controls every aspect of his life. The final section of three stories, Separation, depicts the narrator, a young man in his twenties with his own family, coping with the need to escape his father's control.

Resumen
Familial risk and environmental stress promote the development of alcohol dependence. We investigated whether a positive family history of alcoholism affects the neuroendocrine response to a standardized laboratory stress test in healthy subjects without alcohol use disorders. Twenty-four high-risk subjects with a paternal history of alcoholism (PHA) and 16 family history negative (FHN) controls were evaluated. Psychosocial stress was induced by having subjects deliver a 5-min speech and mental arithmetics in front of an audience on separate days, after drinking either placebo or ethanol (0.6 g/kg) in a randomized sequence. Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) was measured in 10 plasma samples covering up to 75 min after the stress test. Plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) was determined before the stressor, at the time of maximum ACTH secretion, and at 75 min after stress onset. The stress test induced a phasic increase in ACTH secretion. At the time of maximum ACTH, AVP was significantly increased in relation to baseline. Compared to placebo, alcohol administration significantly attenuated maximum ACTH concentration in PHA but not FHN subjects, and decreased AVP measured in the same samples in PHA but not FHN subjects. We conclude that activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal system by psychosocial stress is accompanied by an increase in peripheral plasma AVP levels. Secretion of both ACTH and AVP suggest that alcohol attenuates the stress response selectively in PHA but not FHN subjects. This might imply some short-term positive alcohol effect in sons of alcoholics, but also constitute a mechanism by which their risk to develop alcohol use disorders is increased.

Resumen
Plenzdorf's works, one written before the fall of socialism in the German Democratic Republic (hereafter referred to as the DDR), and one after, portray relationships between fathers and sons, which act as a metaphor to express a personal perspective of the state, revealing that the DDR was neither as repressive or as omnipresent for the average citizen as outsiders are often given to believe. The father, or Übervater, a figure deeply rooted in the German consciousness, is represented by the state and proves itself as an entity which gives the protagonists in both works little notice, despite their best efforts to seek out a paternalistic presence.
