Resumen
The mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases are a family of serine/threonine kinases that are regulated by distinct extracellular stimuli. The currently known members include extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1 (ERK1), ERK2, the c-Jun N-terminal kinase/stress-activated protein kinases (JNK/SAPKs), and p38 MAP kinases. We find that overexpression of the Ste20-related enzymes p21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1) and PAK2 in 293 cells is sufficient to activate JNK/SAPK and to a lesser extent p38 MAP kinase but not ERK2. Rat MAP/ERK kinase kinase 1 can stimulate the activity of each of these MAP kinases. Although neither activated Rac nor the PAKs stimulate ERK2 activity, overexpression of either dominant negative Rac2 or the N-terminal regulatory domain of PAK1 inhibits Ras-mediated activation of ERK2, suggesting a permissive role for Rac in the control of the ERK pathway. Furthermore, constitutively active Rac2, Cdc42hs, and RhoA synergize with an activated form of Raf to increase ERK2 activity. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized connection between Rho family small G proteins and the ERK pathway.

Resumen
Succession is the ultimate test of success reflected as sustainability in business, when managing business changes hands from a family leader to a non-family leader. This means when a family business is owned by the family but managed by a non-family member. This article explores the possibility of approaching succession process using design thinking—an approach based on appreciative inquiry. By identifying the various dimensions in which succession in family business takes place, this article introduces to business leaders a strength-based approach for creating an imagined future, that is satisfactory and acceptable after the incumbent phase out and successor phase in take place. The article emphasizes on creating of a singular image—a shared cognitive map for succession. When business leaders wilfully design a singular image, they have shared cognitive map that facilitates succession. The article provides guiding questions for design thinking in succession in family business.

Resumen
AbstractMitogen-activated protein (Map) kinases are widely expressed serine-threonine kinases that mediate important regulatory signals in the cell. Three major groups of Map kinases exist: the p38 Map kinase family, the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) family, and the c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) family. The members of the different Map kinase groups participate in the generation of various cellular responses, including gene transcription, induction of cell death or maintenance of cell survival, malignant transformation, and regulation of cell-cycle progression. Depending on the specific family isoform involved and the cellular context, Map kinase pathways can mediate signals that either promote or suppress the growth of malignant hematopoietic cells. Over the last few years, extensive work by several groups has established that Map kinase pathways play critical roles in the pathogenesis of various hematologic malignancies, providing new molecular targets for future therapeutic approaches. In this review, the involvement of various Map kinase pathways in the pathophysiology of hematologic malignances is summarized and the clinical implications of the recent advances in the field are discussed.

Resumen
A polyazimuthal map projection is a mapping that represents parallels as non-concentric full circles on the plane. Polyazimuthal mappings are almost never mentioned in the literature dealing with map projections. However, these projections are flexible; their distortion characteristics are highly mutable. This paper expands the theory of polyazimuthal map projections. Furthermore, this study also shows the derivation for variants of this projection family (e. g. equal-area, orthogonal). The article concludes with some practical applications in the field of low-distortion map projections to demonstrate their advantages.

Resumen
Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases comprise an evolutionarily conserved family of proteins that includes at least three vertebrate protein kinases (p42, p44, and p55 MAPK) and five yeast protein kinases (SPK1, MPK1, HOG1, FUS3, and KSS1). Members of this family are activated by a variety of extracellular agents that influence cellular proliferation and differentiation. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, there are multiple physiologically distinct MAP kinase activation pathways composed of structurally related kinases. The recently cloned vertebrate MAP kinase activators are structurally related to MAP kinase activators in these yeast pathways. These similarities suggest that homologous kinase cascades are utilized for signal transduction in many, if not all, eukaryotes. We have identified additional members of the MAP kinase activator family in Xenopus laevis by a polymerase chain reaction-based analysis of embryonic cDNAs. One of the clones identified (XMEK2) encodes a unique predicted protein kinase that is similar to the previously reported activator (MAPKK) in X. laevis. XMEK2, a highly expressed maternal mRNA, is developmentally regulated during embryogenesis and expressed in brain and muscle. Expression of XMEK2 in yeast cells suppressed the growth defect associated with loss of the yeast MAP kinase activator homologs, MKK1 and MKK2. Partial sequence of a second cDNA clone (XMEK3) identified yet another potential MAP kinase activator. The pattern of expression of XMEK3 is distinct from that of p42 MAPK and XMEK2. The high degree of amino acid sequence similarity of XMEK2, XMEK3, and MAPKK suggests that these three are related members of an amphibian family of protein kinases involved in the activation of MAP kinase. Discovery of this family suggests that multiple MAP kinase activation pathways similar to those in yeast cells exist in vertebrates.

Resumen
We derive a new variational principle, leading to a new momentum map and a new multisymplectic formulation for a family of Euler–Poincaré equations defined on the Virasoro–Bott group, by using the inverse map (also called ‘back-to-labels’ map). This family contains as special cases the well-known Korteweg–de Vries, Camassa–Holm and Hunter–Saxton soliton equations. In the conclusion section, we sketch opportunities for future work that would apply the new Clebsch momentum map with 2-cocycles derived here to investigate a new type of interplay among nonlinearity, dispersion and noise.

AbstractWe prove that every complete family of linearly non-degenerate rational curves of degree e > 2 in ℙn has atmost n–1 moduli. For e = 2 we prove that such a family has at most n moduli. The general method involves exhibiting a map from the base of a family X to the Grassmannian of e-planes in ℙn and analyzing the resulting map on cohomology.

Resumen
Abstract Stimulation of hemopoietic cells with IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, granulocyte-macrophage-CSF and Steel factor-(SLF) induced tyrosine phosphorylation of a number of protein substrates. Two of these proteins, designated p42 and p44, were tyrosine phosphorylated rapidly in response to treatment with IL-3, IL-5, granulocyte-macrophage-CSF and SLF, but not IL-4. We demonstrate that these common substrates are members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase) family of protein serine/threonine kinases. Ion-exchange chromatography yielded a peak of MAP kinase activity eluting at 0.3 to 0.32 M NaCl. Immunoblotting of column fractions with antiphosphotyrosine antibodies showed coelution of the peak of MAP kinase enzyme activity with the p42 and p44 tyrosine phosphorylated species, and with two proteins of 42 and 44 kDa which were immunoreactive with anti-MAP kinase antibodies. Moreover, a characteristic shift in mobility of the p42 and p44 species was observed after factor treatment. Time-course analyses and subsequent ion-exchange chromatography demonstrated SLF activation of MAP kinase activity was maximal after 2 min of factor treatment and decreased to basal levels after 30 min stimulation. By contrast, activation of MAP kinase after IL-5 treatment was not as rapid. Maximal activity was observed 15 min after stimulation and remained elevated for up to 60 min after IL-5 addition. Investigation of the role of protein kinase C in the mechanism of activation by these growth factors demonstrated that specific inhibition of protein kinase C led to a reduction, but not ablation, of the SLF and IL-3 induced stimulation of MAP kinase activity. The use of synthetic peptide substrates confirmed SLF and IL-5 activate isoforms of MAP kinases. These results demonstrate that members of the MAP kinase family are involved in common signal transduction events elicited by IL-3, IL-5, granulocyte-macrophage-CSF and Steel factor, but not those involving IL-4.

The invariant Cantor sets of the logistic map gμ(x) = μx(1 - x) for μ > 4 are hyperbolic and form a continuous family. We show that this family can be obtained explicitly through solutions of initial value problems for a system of infinitely coupled differential equations due to the hyperbolicity. The same result also applies to the tent map Ta(x) = a(1/2 - |1/2 - x|) for a > 2.

Resumen
In one of the previous papers, we defined a map, called the hyperbolic Schwarz map, from the one-dimensional projective space to the three-dimensional hyperbolic space by use of solutions of the hypergeometric differential equation, and thus obtained closed flat surfaces belonging to the class of flat fronts. We continue the study of such flat fronts in this paper. First, we introduce derived Schwarz maps of the hypergeometric differential equation and, second, we construct a parallel family of flat fronts connecting the classical Schwarz map and the derived Schwarz map.

Resumen
ABSTRACT Members of the MEF2 family of transcription factors bind as homo- and heterodimers to the MEF2 site found in the promoter regions of numerous muscle-specific, growth- or stress-induced genes. We showed previously that the transactivation activity of MEF2C is stimulated by p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase. In this study, we examined the potential role of the p38 MAP kinase pathway in regulating the other MEF2 family members. We found that MEF2A, but not MEF2B or MEF2D, is a substrate for p38. Among the four p38 group members, p38 is the most potent kinase for MEF2A. Threonines 312 and 319 within the transcription activation domain of MEF2A are the regulatory sites phosphorylated by p38. Phosphorylation of MEF2A in a MEF2A-MEF2D heterodimer enhances MEF2-dependent gene expression. These results demonstrate that the MAP kinase signaling pathway can discriminate between different MEF2 isoforms and can regulate MEF2-dependent genes through posttranslational activation of preexisting MEF2 protein.

For parameter values $a$ where the quadratic map $f_a(x) = 1-ax^2$ has an attracting periodic point, and small values of $b$, the Hénon map $H_{a,b}(x, y) = (1 + y - ax^2, bx)$ has a periodic attractor and an attracting set that is homeomorphic with the inverse limit of $f_a|_{[1-a, 1]}$. This attracting set consists of the collection of unstable manifolds of a hyperbolic invariant set together with the attracting periodic orbit. In the case in which $f_a$ is also not renormalizable with smaller period and $b < 0$, we give a symbolic description of the collection of stable manifolds of this hyperbolic set and show that this collection is homeomorphic with the collection of unstable manifolds precisely when the attracting periodic orbit is accessible from the complement of the attracting set, a condition that can be characterized in terms of the kneading sequence of the quadratic map. As an application, we answer a question raised by Hubbard and Oberste-Vorth by proving that the basin boundaries corresponding to three distinct period five sinks in the Hénon family are non-homeomorphic.

Resumen
A Care Multidisciplinary Action Plan was developed at a 300-bed rural medical center in 1994. Once a potential organ donor is identified and referred to the organ procurement organization and the family has consented to donation, the ICU nurse initiates the Care Multidisciplinary Action Plan, which is based on an 8-hour time frame for ICU care that may be adjusted as needed. The first hour includes prompts for coroner notification, billing changes, and completion of hospital-specific death notice forms. The remaining hours are spent administering tests and preparing the donor for organ retrieval. Collaborative issues such as donor family support also are addressed. ICU nurses who used the donor care Multidisciplinary Action Plan were interviewed to determine its effectiveness.

Resumen
Most well-known multidimensional continued fractions, including the Mönkemeyer map and the triangle map, are generated by repeatedly subdividing triangles. This paper constructs a family of multidimensional continued fractions by permuting the vertices of these triangles before and after each subdivision. We obtain an even larger class of multidimensional continued fractions by composing the maps in the family. These include the algorithms of Brun, Parry-Daniels and Güting. We give criteria for when multidimensional continued fractions associate sequences to unique points, which allows us to determine when periodicity of the corresponding multidimensional continued fraction corresponds to pairs of real numbers being cubic irrationals in the same number field.

Resumen
The Boros–Moll map appears as a subsystem of a Landen transformation associated to certain rational integrals and its dynamics is related to their convergence. In the paper, we study the dynamics of a one-parameter family of maps which unfold the Boros–Moll one, showing that the existence of an unbounded invariant chaotic region in the Boros–Moll map is a peculiar feature within the family. We relate this singularity with a specific property of the critical lines that occurs only for this special case. In particular, we explain how the unbounded chaotic region in the Boros–Moll map appears. We especially explain the main contact/homoclinic bifurcations that occur in the family. We also report some other bifurcation phenomena that appear in the considered unfolding.

We first establish a fixed point theorem for a k-set contraction map on the family KKM(X,X), which does not need to be a compact map. Next, we present the KKM type theorems, matching theorems, coincidence theorems, and minimax theorems on the family KKM(X,Y) and the Φ-mapping in FC-spaces. Our results improve and generalize some recent results.

Resumen
We introduce a new flexible modified alpha power (MAP) family of distributions by adding two parameters to a baseline model. Some of its mathematical properties are addressed. We show empirically that the new family is a good competitor to the Beta-F and Kumaraswamy-F classes, which have been widely applied in several areas. A new extension of the exponential distribution, called the modified alpha power exponential (MAPE) distribution, is defined by applying the MAP transformation to the exponential distribution. Some properties and maximum likelihood estimates are provided for this distribution. We analyze three real datasets to compare the flexibility of the MAPE distribution to the exponential, Weibull, Marshall–Olkin exponential and alpha power exponential distributions.

Resumen
We define and study a family of cubic surfaces in the projectivized tangent bundle over a four-dimensional projective space associated to the root system D5. The 27 lines are rational over the base and we determine the classifying map to the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces. This map has degree two and we use it to get short proofs for some results on the Chow group of the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces.

Resumen
AbstractEchinococcus granulosus is an important zoonotic parasite that is distributed worldwide. The EG95 vaccine was developed to assist with control of E. granulosus transmission through the parasite's livestock intermediate hosts. The vaccine is based on a recombinant antigen encoded by a gene which is a member of a multi-gene family. With the recent availability of two E. granulosus draft genomes, we sought to map the eg95 gene family to the genomes. We were unable to map unequivocally any of the eg95 gene family members which had previously been characterized by cloning and sequencing both strands of genomic DNA fragments. Our inability to map EG95-related genes to the genomes has revealed limitations in the assembled sequence data when utilized for gene family analyses. This study contrasts with the expectations expressed in often high-profile publications describing draft genomes of parasitic organisms, highlighting deficiencies in currently available genomic resources for E. granulosus and provides a cautionary note for research which seeks to utilize these genome datasets.

Resumen
Microtubules play central roles in various cellular processes in eukaryotes. The dynamics and organisation of interphase microtubules and mitotic spindles are dramatically altered during the cell cycle and development. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this dynamic behaviour remain to be understood. In recent years, a novel family of microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs), the Dis1/TOG family, has emerged as a versatile regulator of microtubule function. These MAPs are highly conserved in eukaryotes from yeasts and plants to humans. The localisation and function of these MAPs are not determined simply by their intrinsic microtubule-binding activity. Instead this family executes its diverse roles by interacting with other regulatory molecules, including microtubule motors and centrosomal proteins. The modular structure of these MAPs may allow them to interact with multiple proteins and thereby be involved in a wide variety of microtubule and spindle functions. Movies available on-line

AbstractIn this work we map one of the most populated regions in the main belt - the asteroid family Themis. Computed with a good choice of parameters, the map enables us to get a refined picture of the dynamics in the family, to reexamine the role of resonances therein, to understand better the distribution of asteroids inside the region and to identify dynamical pathways along which particles can drift away.

Assume that H1 and H2 are two given closed subintervals of ℝ and that f2:H1⟶H2 and f1:H2⟶H1 are continuous maps. Let ϒh1,h2=f1h2,f2h1 be a Cournot map over the space H1×H2. In this paper, we study G1,G2-chaos (resp. strong G1,G2-chaos) of such a Cournot map. We will show that the following are true: (1) ϒ is G1,G2-chaotic (resp. strong G1,G2-chaotic) if and only if ϒ2Λ1 is G1,G2-chaotic (resp. strong G1,G2-chaotic) if and only if Γ2Λ2 is G1,G2-chaotic (resp. strong G1,G2-chaotic). (2) ϒ is G1,G2-chaotic (resp. strong G1,G2-chaotic) if and only if ϒ2Λ1∪Λ2 is G1,G2-chaotic (resp. strong G1,G2-chaotic).
