Cet article nous raconte l’histoire de la famille des Santa Oliva, de sa formation, de sa consolidation et plus tard de sa décadence. Les Santa Oliva devinrent châtelains du château d'Eramprunyà, non pas comme on le crut, en se basant sur les études faites par F. Bofarull, au XIIeme siècle, mais bien dès le XIeme siècle, quand Mir Geribert proposa au Comte de Barcelone qu'il accepte Ramon Isimbert comme châtelain d'Eramprunyà, un domaine perché tout en haut d'une montagne et duquel on embrasse une ample zone de côte, depuis la partie inférieure du Llobregat jusqu'au massif de Garraf. L'article prétend démontrer comment la famille des Santa Oliva a ses origines sous la protection de deux grandes institutions comme furent Sant Cugat et la haute noblesse de Sant Martí, alliée à la Maison des Comtes, et ce, à un moment crucial de l'histoire européenne, pendant la premiere moitié du XIeme siècle, celle-ci vécut son apogée au siècle suivant et commença son déclin au XIIeme siècle. Son patrimoine est établi uniquement sur la base de terres et du pouvoir seigneurial. Les Santa Oliva furent les derniers châtelains d'Eramprunyà.

Flaubert undeniably represents a fascinating case with regard to stereotyping, especially if one considers not only his masterpiece, Madame Bovary, but also his last volume, left unfinished in perhaps a symbolic way, Bouvard et Pécuchet, and the collections of clichés included in his Dictionnaire des idées reçues and Le Sottisier. What is prosaic is important for the novelist. Moreover, in his Correspondence we find a real and fascinating interest in the topic of the cliché. A key sentence concerning what is commonplace suggestively describes Charles Bovary’s conversation: “Charles’ conversation was as flat as a pavement, and people’s ideas paraded on it in their ordinary outfit, without vibrating with emotion, with laughter or with daydreaming” (my translation). Essentially, our aim is to dwell on language and gesture stereotypes as presented in some of Flaubert’s novels as well as in the short story Un cœur simple (A Simple Heart) and even in his travel notes. Furthermore, through the agency of Jean-Paul Sartre’s ample work L’Idiot de la famille (The Family Idiot), it is our aim to look into the language mechanisms which lead to mal du siècle in Flaubert’s view, namely the stupidity of wanting a conclusion and the circulation of received ideas.

Resumé: IL’équivalence de l’institution du mariage, en dépit des différences entre les règlementations nationales, rend très rares les cas de non-reconnaissance du statut de personne mariée. A cette homogénéité s’oppose l’hétérogénéité des partenariats enregistrés. Dans certains pays, leur incompatibilité avec les principes de base de la politique sociale et de la famille peut atteindre voire dépasser le seuil de l’ordre public. Pour éviter une amputation excessive des droits individuels acquis à l’étranger, des solutions de compromis, parfois proches du paradoxe, s’imposent. Cette harmonie partielle est réalisée par la reconnaissance de certains des effets rattachés au statut acquis à l’étranger. Le statut boiteux qui en résulte, loin de générer un “effet de surprise” susceptible de décevoir les expectatives des individus concernés, est devenu un “effet recherché”, dans le but de réaliser une pression croissante sur la politique législative, en vue de réaliser une uniformisation plus ample du droit de la famille de l’époque néolibérale. En attendant l’évolution future, les systèmes de droit international privé nationaux évaluent l’équivalence des institutions étrangères à leurs propres institutions, afin de les faire vivre à l’intérieur de leurs frontières.Mots clés: unions civiles, partenariats enregistrés, régimes matrimoniaux, droit international privé, reconnaissance, equivalence.Abstract: This paper analyses the current existing models of “civil unions” in comparative perspective with a view to identify the conditions for their exportability. Their exportability is also a ground for identifying the most suitable model for a pos-sible future harmonisation of civil unions and, in this respect, to verify whether, following a Scandinavian trend, the traditional marriage, transmuted into a marriage between two neutral beings, could represent such model. Four main governmental attitudes towards homosexual couples offer at present a fertile ground for conflicts of laws, whose content is explored with special reference to Switzerland, Italy and to the European Area of Freedom, Justice and Security. Ensuring full international harmony of solutions implies renouncing to basic social policy principles on family law, when these are incompatible with the model whose import is demanded by the individuals concerned. Hence, compromise solutions are found to ensure at least a partial harmony through the recognition of some of the effects attached to the foreign status, if the latter cannot be considered equivalent to a correspondent domestic one. The limping unions that result are often far from unpredictable, and rather enshrine a political vision aimed at influencing legislative policies.Keywords: homosexual couples, matrimonial property, civil unions, recognition of foreign acts, and equivalence.

There is ample evidence that families are important in supporting the development of giftedness in children. Although there has been a great deal of research addressing individual and school factors in promoting giftedness, the role of parents and caregivers is comparatively underresearched, particularly in Australia. This study investigated the ways in which parents supported their children’s development, drawing on the educational and learning capital framework within the Actiotope Model of Giftedness. A qualitative design was adopted and semistructured interviews were conducted with 32 parents and caregivers. The data demonstrated that parents draw on all 10 educational and learning resources in creating favorable environments to support their children’s development.

The conventional approach in molecular replacement is the use of a related structure as a search model. However, this is not always possible as the availability of such structures can be scarce for poorly characterized families of proteins. In these cases, alternative approaches can be explored, such as the use of small ideal fragments that share high, albeit local, structural similarity with the unknown protein. Earlier versions of AMPLE enabled the trialling of a library of ideal helices, which worked well for largely helical proteins at suitable resolutions. Here, the performance of libraries of helical ensembles created by clustering helical segments is explored. The impacts of different B-factor treatments and different degrees of structural heterogeneity are explored. A 30% increase in the number of solutions obtained by AMPLE was observed when using this new set of ensembles compared with the performance with ideal helices. The boost in performance was notable across three different fold classes: transmembrane, globular and coiled-coil structures. Furthermore, the increased effectiveness of these ensembles was coupled to a reduction in the time required by AMPLE to reach a solution. AMPLE users can now take full advantage of this new library of search models by activating the `helical ensembles' mode.

This study examines the coping capacities of families during the Covid-19 lockdown in relation to their material and social resources. Specifically, we examine (1) how familial modes of living changed during the lockdown; (2) how the affected families coped with these changes; and (3) how families’ coping strategies were influenced by their social and material capital. We analyze problem centered interviews with 30 families and the ego-centered networks of these families, conducted in spring 2020 and autumn 2021. Our typology shows that inequalities increased in the pandemic. In families that had both strong networks and ample material security, the crisis had only a minor impact on how they lived their everyday lives. By contrast, families that had neither supportive networks nor sufficient material resources felt vulnerable during the crisis, and threatened to break down. Families that had either support from their networks or greater material security were able to cope only with great effort.

Les sous-graphes isométriques d'hypercubes (dit cubes partiels) constituent une classe centrale de la théorie métrique des graphes. Ils englobent des familles de graphes importantes (arbres, graphes médians, etc.), provenant de différents domaines de recherche, tels que la géométrie discrète, la combinatoire ou la théorie géométrique des groupes. Nous étudions tout d'abord la structure des cubes partiels de VC-dimension 2. Nous montrons que ces graphes peuvent être obtenus par amalgamations à partir de deux types de cellules combinatoires.Cette décomposition nous permet d’obtenir diverses caractérisations. En particulier, tout cube partiel de VC-dimension 2 peut être complété en cube partiel ample de VC-dimension 2. Nous montrons ensuite que les graphes de topes des matroïdes orientés et des complexes de matroïdes orientés uniformes peuvent aussi être complétés en cubes partiels amples de même VC-dimension.En utilisant un résultat de Moran et Warmuth, nous établissons que ces classes vérifient la conjecture de Floyd et Warmuth, l'une des plus vielles conjectures en théorie de l'apprentissage. They comprise many important graph classes (trees, median graphs, tope graphs of complexes of oriented matroids, etc.), arising from different areas of research such as discrete geometry, combinatorics or geometric group theory.First, we investigate the structure of partial cubes of VC-dimension 2. We show that those graphs can be obtained via amalgams from even cycles and full subdivisions of complete graphs. This decomposition allows us to obtain various characterizations. In particular, any partial cube can be completed to an ample partial cube of VC-dimension 2. Then, we show that the tope graphs of oriented matroids and complexes of uniform oriented matroids can also be completed to ample partial cubes of the same VC-dimension.Using a result of Moran and Warmuth, we establish that those classes satisfy the conjecture of Floyd and Warmuth, one of the oldest open problems in computational machine learning. Particularly, they admit (improper labeled) compression schemes of size their VC-dimension.Next, we describe a proper labeled compression scheme of size d for complexes of oriented matroids of VC-dimension d, generalizing the result of Moran and Warmuth for ample sets. Now, through 1,900 letters from friends and readers, Francesca Nencioni offers a different and more ample overview of the fundamental stages in the life and works of the writer, focusing above all on the years of his university training in Pisa. The purpose of this book is show how research on families can be used to offer inspiration, suggestions, and guidance to intercultural families choosing to school their children in the regular Japanese school system. Each chapter is written by a parent or parents who are themselves researchers and thus bring their skills to the task of writing about issues which have affected their families, and are likely to affect other families in similar ways. There are also suggestions for other non-Japanese parents coping with similar issues. The book is divided into three sections: The first, “Finding our own way”, deals with children’s and parents’ struggles with identity and inclusion in Japanese schools and society. The second, “Dealing with the Japanese school system”, offers narratives and advice on such topics as coping with homework and dealing with more than one school system, as well as what government-accredited Japanese overseas schools have to offer. The third section, “Coping with challenges”, examines the experiences of families where children are “different” because they have physical or intellectual challenges, or live with foster or adoptive families. The book concludes with a narrative about a family who made the decision to remove their children from the Japanese system entirely and send them abroad for schooling. The authors of the chapters in this book are all current or former university faculty, living in different areas of Japan. Some, who live in highly-populated urban areas, have had ample opportunities to locate educational options for their children, while others, living in rural communities, have had to struggle to advocate for their children’s inclusion in mainstream classes. Their stories are all compelling and their advice is certain to be helpful to those planning to or already raising children in Japan. This book will also be of value to researchers and educators, particularly those with an interest in bilingualism, intercultural families, and cross-cultural issues, along with anyone wishing to learn more about contemporary Japanese society.

This chapter offers an account of the role and place of jus post bellum within just war theory and highlights avenues of inquiry on the aftermath of war that have been largely ignored. The author discusses recent arguments to the effect that jus ad bellum and jus in bello exhaust just war theory and that jus post bellum, far from being a key member of the family, in fact does much better as an outsider. The author claims, on the contrary, that there is ample space for jus post bellum within just war theory; in partial agreement with those arguments, however, the author agrees that a full account of the ethics of war’s aftermath must also draw on other fields of normative inquiry and fleshes out in greater details connections and disconnections between jus post bellum on the one hand and the other two jura on the other.

Deemed one of the major concerns of our time, income inequality has been on the rise for decades. While there is ample discussion and a vast body of knowledge already written on the subject, the focus of this chapter is on tracing the geography of rising inequality starting in the 1970s. An absence of support to maintain a middle class, an erosion of the value of wage labour, and stagnant minimum wages are a few of the many reasons for rising income inequality. Data show that inequality is highest in areas where there are growing disparities in the difference of employment opportunities between high- and low-income families. Evidence also suggests income and wealth gaps go hand in hand. If you do not own anything now your chances of ever owning anything in the future are bleak despite the pacification accorded the American dream. While this chapter highlights events and policies within the USA, rising income inequality is a significant global issue.

This book is a comprehensive look at the results of a study, done under the auspices of Kent State University, that explored the attitudes, beliefs, and life orientation of 253 women between the ages of 25 and 45. Depending upon the amount of employment that the subjects' mothers had outside the home while the subjects were growing up, the adult subjects responded to questions of adjustment to life, overall sense of well-being, emotional stability, and sense of self-fulfillment. The overwhelming response was that women whose mothers had worked while they were growing up were more likely to suffer from depression, to feel less effective as parents, and to report less satisfaction with their parenting skills, careers, and life in general. Contrary to perceived notions of family adjustment to working mothers, day care, and women's liberation, this study forces us to respond to the warning signals issued by a generation of the daughters of working mothers. While Sugar's findings are clear and unambiguous, she provides ample information for the reader to explore other interpretations of the data and the cause and possible solutions.

AbstractAdolescence is a sensitive developmental period, with important changes occurring at biological, cognitive, emotional and social levels. As evidenced by several studies, adolescence is also a vulnerable period for the onset of serious mental disorders, which then tend to persist into adulthood. While there is ample evidence concerning risk factors of mental disorders in adolescence, a lot less is known about protective factors: however, one important protective factor to have emerged from recent research concerns attachment security. The aim of the current paper is to explore the effects of attachment on emotion regulation (in terms of physiological reactivity), autonomy and relatedness, and behavioral problems in adolescence, and how attachment is in turn influenced by parental reflective functioning (PRF), parenting behaviors (operationalized in terms of behaviors promoting and undermining autonomy relatedness) and parenting stress (in terms of cortisol reactivity). The findings point to the potential utility of interventions aimed at enhancing attachment security, thus allowing a better psychological adjustment, and at improving PRF, especially in divorced families, given its protective effect on parenting stress and parenting behaviors.

School reintegration for the student with a chronic medical condition requires ample preparation and coordination among the student, family, medical providers, and school-based professionals. Changes experienced by the student frequently require that accommodations and interventions are made available to support the return to school. School personnel must clearly understand the challenges experienced by the student in order to appropriately plan for necessary accommodations and interventions. This chapter discusses important factors to consider in support of school reintegration for the student with a chronic medical condition into school. These include medical needs, safety issues, and cognitive, academic, and social-emotional factors. The chapter presents accommodation and intervention strategies that are commonly considered to support school reintegration, such as alternative education settings, modified schedules, and preparation strategies for students, families, peers, and school personnel.

More importantly, these three young adult texts, which disrupt shallow problem-novel expectations, are disability narratives, which stand as complex works of literature that simultaneously explore and respond to political and social movements. A truly exceptional problem novel, Accidents of Nature places ample attention on political lessons, but does so by delving into complex and compelling social issues. Accidents of Nature works as an exemplary problem novel: a politicized text with a deliberate structure and well-developed characters that both explain and illustrate the primary “problem” with theoretical ideas and political causes.

If she was going to prevent Jiang’s expulsion, Roseanne knew that she needed to help his teachers form a positive relationship with the boy’s family. A child’s parent-teacher relationship is essential to their academic and social success and directly influences their likelihood of being expelled. Despite ample evidence of the power of these early relationships, teachers and parents routinely report that it is difficult to form and maintain open, collaborative, and supportive home-school connections. This chapter lays out the evidence for the critical role that empathy and communication can play in forestalling the expulsion process described in the previous chapter. Vignettes and quotes from families and teachers also frame a discussion of the implicit biases and logistical challenges that impede the formation of these connections and enhance disciplinary disparities. The chapter concludes with some recommendations for steps that teachers and administrators can take proactively to support positive parent-teacher relationships.

Abstract In §2, we had the debut of many of the nearrings whose influence on the theory has been profound. Later, in Chapter 3, we explored an Eden for many of these influential families of nearrings. In this chapter, we wish to get better acquainted with some of these first families of nearrings. With a better understanding of these first families, one should be able to find the abstract structure theory more meaningful and alive. Also, these first families continue to provide geneses for important research. Before we explore these first families further, we shall first find it useful to develop the concept of a nearring module. It has been rather traditional to take one particular viewpoint on this subject, even though it was known that an alternative existed. With promptings from J. D. P. Meldrum [M], Gary Grainger [GG] explored the alternative viewpoint and has found ample evidence that the alternative deserves serious attention.

Abstract There is ample research showing that by adolescence, girls—compared with boys—are likely to report greater concern about their appearance and behavior and to have lower self-esteem and career aspirations. In addition, they are less likely to speak out in class, challenge others, or express angry feelings. It appears that by this stage in life, many girls have internalized cultural messages that their worth lies mainly in being seen as physically attractive, sociable, modest, and docile. For researchers, clinicians, and educators concerned with the detrimental effects of such gender differences on girls’ psychological health and development, important questions are how and why these differences emerge. Years of exposure to stereotyped and distorted depictions of females in magazines, television, movies, and popular music certainly contribute to the gender role conceptions that adolescent girls develop. In addition, factors within the school environment, particularly during the middle school and high school years, may amplify those cultural messages.

Abstract John Sullivan Dwight, born in Boston the midst of the War of 1812, was the scion of an old and respected New England family. The first Dwights arrived in the mid-1630s; John Sullivan Dwight belonged to the branch that settled in Shirley, Massachusetts, a musically advanced town. His parents’ early exposure to music deeply affected him and his siblings, and a passion for music was a hallmark of the Dwight family. Although they were nominally religious, Dwight was born and raised on Court Street, a cultural beehive that gave him ample contact with music in a secular setting. He was ideally positioned to experience music—which was generally employed for worship, for dancing, and for social gatherings—as it emerged in America as a vehicle for artistic expression and intellectual and emotional engagement.

The indigenous plants of Ranapur reserve forest of Odisha state, India, possess ample scope in ethnobotany due to their medicinal properties. Keeping in view of the requirements of the urbanites, this work highlights the utilization of native flora, identification, ethnobotany, floristic survey, and preservation of natural and cultivated plant species within the hills of Ranapur, Odisha. A field study around the Ranapur forest resulted in a wide diversity accounting for 143 plant species belonging to 53 families, which were identified and documented alongside their botanical name, family, and habitat following local herbaria, archives of Flora of Orissa, monographs, and standard taxonomic study. Gmelina arborea, Rauwolfia serpentina, and Crataeva nurvala (Varuna) fall into the RET taxa (Rare, Endangered, and Threatened) and are groundbreaking against various diseases. A few wild plants such as Shorea robusta, Dalbergia sissoo, Pterocarpus marsupium, Murraya koenigii, and Schleichera oleosa were the most dominant species in the study area. The present study adds detailed database concerning the floral diversity and their medicinal values, which attracts many researchers as well as the local populace to conserve and explore their wide-spectrum applications. This could be useful in novel drug discovery and authenticates the ethnomedicinal knowledge.

Abstract Social science research has long recognized that the characteristics of an individual’s family and the relationships among family members can have important implications for an individual’s economic outcomes. For example, research has noted that the number of siblings a child has can influence the child’s life chances by affecting the amount of resources that parents are able to devote to the child during critical phases of his or her childhood. More siblings can mean poorer outcomes during adulthood due to resource dilution. Researchers also have investigated the relationships between parents and their adult children, revealing that the desire and ability to control children can affect bequests and that individuals’ labor market prospects and wealth outcomes are influenced by parental bequests and inter vivos transfers. The research in this area offers ample evidence to suggest that significant and transformative transfers are often made from parents to children when the children are adults—in the forms of “gifts” of tuition assistance, down payment assistance for home purchases, or transfers of wealth at death (e.g., Kotlikoff and Summers, 1981; Laitner and Juster, 1996; Oliver and Shapiro, 1995).

The goal of this research is to develop energetically efficient robots that can produce stable gait. One cannot ignore the promise of robots that can walk by using very little energy. Gravity powered bipeds provide ample proof that this is possible. It is conceivable that mechanisms that are much simpler than legged robots can also produce gravity powered locomotion. It is also plausible that one can get deeper understanding of the dynamics of such simple mechanisms. In addition, evolutionary biology tells us that one can learn a great deal by studying the hereditary traits of organisms that evolve over generations. Thus, we study a chain of mechanisms that span from the very simple to the progressively more complicated. Each member derived from the previous one by making well defined incremental changes. Hence, our goal is to generate a family of planar mechanisms, with members that can be as simple as a bouncing ball or as complex as a five link biped. This presentation will be the first step of this study.

Vessels typically house large sets of different, complex types of equipment; functional failures in them lead to operational stoppage or downgrade with impacts on performance, quality and/or cost. Preventive maintenance schedules are commonly employed, the optimization of which relates to the need of maintenance, the specific component where a problem is detected, the identified fault type, the severity, the expected remaining life within acceptable performance (confidence) limits, etc. Recent advances in sensors and in Machine Learning (ML) methods, have boosted both the fault diagnosis and prognosis, thus incenting companies to invest on the development of efficient Predictive Maintenance (PdM). In this work, we explore the PdM problem for a family of equipment, namely, compressors, through the application of ML techniques on large datasets obtained from on-board sensors. We first deal with the problem of identifying the most useful features in the frequency and time domains, that enable efficient classification and we demonstrate results on data pre-processing and feature extraction. We apply two different clustering and classification algorithms, namely, k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) Support Vector Machines (SVM) on big datasets obtained from laboratory and industrial setups. We demonstrate that early failure prediction and fault classification is feasible and provides ample opportunities for the development of PdM tactics that reduce cost and minimize risk. Finally, we comment on the appropriateness of features and evaluate the classification accuracy for simple fault cases.

In the final week of March 2020, approximately 4.7 million employees in Canada shifted to a work- from-home (WFH) arrangement in response to the pandemic. A similar transition occurred on a global scale. With the growing trend of remote work and the shift towards home offices, understanding the effects of objective and subjective indoor environmental quality (IEQ) on individuals' well-being and productivity is crucial. Much of the existing research has been conducted in traditional office environments rather than in WFH settings. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the subjective evaluation of IEQ conditions within WFH settings and their perceived influence on both work performance and well-being. The analysis is based on a field study conducted in the summer of 2022, which involved 94 participants. The most prevalent features available in the workspaces of these individuals included access to exterior views, operable windows, ample daylight, and sufficient workspace. Notably, these features not only received the highest satisfaction ratings from the participants but also appeared to exert a positive impact on both work performance and well-being. Conversely, the most frequently encountered challenges by WFH employees were associated with disturbances originating from street noise and family members, as well as unwanted interruptions. These issues were found to have a more pronounced effect on workers' well-being compared to their impact on work performance. Furthermore, the study revealed significant correlations between overall workspace satisfaction and performance, as well as between well-being and performance, underscoring the interconnectedness of these factors in the WFH context.

Abstract The study of size effects in electronic structural components and solders is important when dimensions are being continually downsized. It is crucial to obtain a constitutive model that describes material behavior of electronic package solders at small scales. Ample studies are available to describe the deformation behavior of SAC alloys at bulk level. For instance, stress-strain, creep, and shear behaviors have been investigated for bulk SAC samples. Although solder joints are very small in dimensions, most researchers have not explained the solder deformation considering size effects. With further miniaturization of solder joints in high density packaging, the localized material behavior can influence significantly the overall system. For instance, knowledge of individual grain properties of a crystalline materials is essential in determining material behavior of miniaturized products. Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) alloys are the most widely used lead-free materials to fabricate solder interconnects in microelectronic packaging. For most of the SAC alloys, more than 95% weight percentage is β-Sn which is a highly anisotropic material in terms of elastic modulus (E) and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Moreover, due to the crystalline nature of β-Sn material, plastic deformation beyond the elastic limit is described by various atomic planes and directions, which are termed as slip systems. Ten different slip families with 32 slip systems have been recognized for β-Sn body-centered tetragonal (BCT) crystals. When external loads are applied on solder joints, plastic deformation is dictated by the movement of dislocations and direction of deformation is defined by slip systems. When structural components are miniature in dimensions, crystal plasticity theory can accurately predict the material response considering crystallographic deformation mechanisms. In this study, a crystal plasticity-based DAMASK code was used to explain the mesoscale deformation behavior of polycrystal beta-tin samples. Polycrystalline beta-tin samples were obtained using Voronoi tessellation in NEPER with random grain orientations, which is the case for real samples. Shear simulations were performed for a sample with reasonably large number of grains. The model was then calibrated with experimental stress-strain data for a reflowed SAC305 alloy to determine a set of beta-tin slip properties. Subsequently, multiple polycrystalline models were generated with varying number of Sn grains, and a spectral solver was used to determine the sample responses under shear loads on three orthogonal planes. Samples with large number of grains exhibited isotropic deformation behavior. However, samples with fewer number of grains demonstrated anisotropic behavior. This study determined the overall average grain size to sample size ratio at which isotropic behavior breaks down under the application of shear loads.

Although there is ample support for the causal link between home visit parenting programs and child development outcomes, few studies have explored what it is that drives this relationship -to what extent home visit programs are implemented as designed in terms of the content and strategies used by home visitors. To our knowledge, comparable data on the quality and fidelity of implementation in home visit programs in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) does not exist. In light of this gap, this note presents a snapshot of home visit quality in seven countries inwhich home visits reach a considerable number of children. Using an observational checklist tool, we find strong rapport between visitors and families, and consistent involvement of caregivers and children in practicing activities during the visit. However, visitors rarely explain the importance of these activities in relation to child development, often times do not bring the necessary materials, and do little to encourage meaningful dialogue and feedback from caregivers nor demonstrate the desired activity or behavior. Only one third of the observed visitors emphasized language development throughout the visit. It is important to emphasize that these results are not generalizable due to the small and non-random nature of the sample of home visits observed. Nonetheless, this study serves as a pilot of the instrument and type of domains that can and should be measured in a home visit program in order to ensure implementation quality.

Abstract Mitochondria are the site of respiration and numerous other metabolic processes required for plant growth and development. Increased demands for metabolic energy are observed during different stages in the plants life cycle, but are particularly ample during germination and reproductive organ development. These activities are dependent upon the tight regulation of the expression and accumulation of various organellar proteins. Plant mitochondria contain their own genomes (mtDNA), which encode for rRNAs, tRNAs and some mitochondrial proteins. Although all mitochondria have probably evolved from a common alpha-proteobacterial ancestor, notable genomic reorganizations have occurred in the mtDNAs of different eukaryotic lineages. Plant mtDNAs are notably larger and more variable in size (ranging from 70~11,000 kbp in size) than the mrDNAs in higher animals (16~19 kbp). Another unique feature of plant mitochondria includes the presence of both circular and linear DNA fragments, which undergo intra- and intermolecular recombination. DNA-seq data indicate that such recombination events result with diverged mitochondrial genome configurations, even within a single plant species. One common plant phenotype that emerges as a consequence of altered mtDNA configuration is cytoplasmic male sterility CMS (i.e. reduced production of functional pollen). The maternally-inherited male sterility phenotype is highly valuable agriculturally. CMS forces the production of F1 hybrids, particularly in predominantly self-pollinating crops, resulting in enhanced crop growth and productivity through heterosis (i.e. hybrid vigor or outbreeding enhancement). CMS lines have been implemented in some cereal and vegetables, but most crops still lack a CMS system. This work focuses on the analysis of the molecular basis of CMS. We also aim to induce nuclear or organellar induced male-sterility in plants, and to develop a novel approach for fertility restoration. Our work focuses on Brassicaceae, a large family of flowering plants that includes Arabidopsis thaliana, a key model organism in plant sciences, as well as many crops of major economic importance (e.g., broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and various seeds for oil production). In spite of the genomic rearrangements in the mtDNAs of plants, the number of genes and the coding sequences are conserved among different mtDNAs in angiosperms (i.e. ~60 genes encoding different tRNAs, rRNAs, ribosomal proteins and subunits of the respiratory system). Yet, in addition to the known genes, plant mtDNAs also harbor numerous ORFs, most of which are not conserved among species and are currently of unknown function. Remarkably, and relevant to our study, CMS in plants is primarily associated with the expression of novel chimericORFs, which likely derive from recombination events within the mtDNAs. Whereas the CMS loci are localized to the mtDNAs, the factors that restore fertility (Rfs) are identified as nuclear-encoded RNA-binding proteins. Interestingly, nearly all of the Rf’s are identified as pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins, a large family of modular RNA-binding proteins that mediate several aspects of gene expression primarily in plant organelles. In this project we proposed to develop a system to test the ability of mtORFs in plants, which are closely related to known CMS factors. We will induce male fertility in various species of Brassicaceae, and test whether a down-relation in the expression of the recombinantCMS-genes restores fertility, using synthetically designed PPR proteins.
