[Abstract – UK]Perceptions of the good family – an educational challenge?Families today are composed in numerous ways but despite the diversity of the families’ composition, one normative understanding of family nevertheless seems to dominate; namely the nuclear family. In this article, we explore how the concept of a good family has developed historically and examine the meanings these understandings have for family life today. We analyze historical understandings of a good family and investigate how prescriptive understandings of a good family also today set a specific framework for both parents’ endeavoring to arrange good conditions for family life, but also for educators’ cooperation with parents. With this analytical approach, we seek to understand contemporary conditions of family life by mirroring them in their cultural-historical heritage.

Internationally there is wide scientific and legislative agreement on the relevance of school-family collaboration in education. Following this premise, this study explores the notions of collaboration that sustain participation and involvement practices in five schools in Chile. Utilizing a questionnaire based on Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler´s scales of parental involvement and individual and group interviews with teachers and families, meanings about school-family collaboration, roles and teachers´ expectations for families are explored. Results show how notions of collaboration held by teachers and families privilege certain aspects while invisiblizing others. Further results indicate accountability and blame discourses for the failure of successful school-family collaborations attributed to non-participating families by teachers and those families who do participate in school-based activities.

ENGELSK ABSTRACT: Jorid Krane Hanssen: Homosexual Parents – (Un)normal Families? Some Experiences from Growing up in Families with Homosexual Parents Families are constructed in many different ways. The diversity can be expressed as a bewildering variety of alternative lifestyles (Cheal 1999), and indicates the need for a discussion whether “the family“ really exists. The analysis re-ported on in this article is part of a larger study, based on in-depth interviews with 25 persons – aged 15 to 45 – who have grown up with homosexual parents. The focus in this particular article is on how “family“ is experienced and conceptualized among the interviewees. The article discusses how the interviewees construct their images of family, family-life and parenthood, and also how they reflect upon whether their families are accepted as “real“ families in the society. The first part of the article discusses the concept of family from a perspective of diversity, while the second part concentrates on the interviewees’ reflections in relation to two main themes in the analysis; “doing family“ and “family relations“. The aim of the article is to provide some insight into the life of families with same-sex parents, from the perspective of those who actually have grown up in these families. Key words: Family, relations, homosexual parents, parenthood, diversity.

Resumen
AbstractThe authors report on two multiple myeloma sibling pairs. In the absence of a known disease-specific marker one can only speculate on an explanation: is it because of inherited errors or is it related to the same environmental exposure, or both? In this study HLA typing and metabolizing enzyme polymorphism studies have been carried out with the aim of finding inherited similarities in the siblings or characteristics that might differ from the average population. Sibling pair 1 shared an HLA haplotype. Sibling pair 2 shared only HLA-B51, DR4, DRw53, DQ3. Sibling 1/1 was GSTT1 / GSTM1 null and GSTP1 Ile105Val; sibling 1/2 was a GSTT1 / GSTM1 heterozygote and GSTP1 Ile105Val; sibling 2/1 and 2/2 were GSTT1 heterozygotes and shared GSTM1 null / GSTP1 Ile105Ile. The siblings had identical light chain or heavy chain secretion, or both. The similarities found in the inherited factors together with the same environmental exposure in the siblings’ first 20 years of life imply that the development of the same disease cannot be a coincidence.

Resumen

The following paper looks into Maternity\Paternity leave and how the parents make use of it. The underlying reasons for the paper, is a pattern of unequal division of leave between the mother and father.

By using a qualitative in depth interview technique with couples that have children between 2 and 3 years old we have looked for reasons why the decisions, around the division of leave, have been taken, and what factors influence the outcome.

We have found that great importance is attached to, how, the negotiations are carried out between the parents, although these negotiations are influenced by a series of circumstances where the families economic situation influenced by the employment market are important factors.

The results from the empiric part of the study showed a link between the childs age and which parent stayed home.

Furthermore, the results show the families place in relationship to the structure of society also plays an important part in the concluding division of leave.

Resumen
Magister Artium (Child and Family Studies) - MA(CFS)
Participation of diverse families in familial needs studies, assist in understanding and comparing their descriptive account of their families and experiences today. This descriptive study compared traditional and non-traditional families of public officials with a focus on (1) form and income, (2) familial needs as per key propositions, (3) families perceptions/experiences at community and broader societal levels and (4) familial needs government must assist them with. The study was contextualized within a contemporary family discourse. It was primarily influenced by a feminist perspective as well as a critique of the nuclear or traditional family grounded in functionalist theory. The public official, as focus, was framed in a human rights and an employee assistance policy discourse influenced by the South African public service context. The study used a quantitative research paradigm, whereby a survey was implemented. The survey was administered to 600 public officials and culminated in a final sample of 70 participants. The study indicated that public officials, as members of families, live in both traditional and non-traditional families. Public officials have familial needs similar to any other family and are also influenced by similar factors in broader society. As both rights holders and duty bearers they can improve their own family lives and also serve families in broader society better. However they too need to be supported with their own family needs. Public officials suggested the areas in which they needed help from the Provincial Government of the Western Cape.

Resumen
The study explored families' experiences of Mentalization Based Treatment for Families (MBT-F), using a qualitative approach. Five families, five parents and four children, who attended MBT-F at a single Child and Family Service (CFS) were interviewed post-therapy using a semi-structured interview schedule developed for the study. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA; Smith, Jarman and Osborn, 1999), which aims to systematically explore an individual's perception of an event, was used to explore the participants' experience of MBT-F. Rich descriptions of the individual participants' experiences were gained and themes for the parents and the young people were then identified. These highlighted both similarities and differences within and between participants. The findings increased understanding of how families experience MBT-F and therefore made a contribution to the evaluation and further development of the therapy. Clinical implications were discussed and further research suggested.

Resumen
As we move into the new millennium, computers will increasingly become part of the human culture. As such, computers will continue to effect families, and there will undoubtedly be a proliferation of computer usage across family types. Because computers will be an integral part of change in the next millennium, it is important to examine their potential impact on the basic unit of society- the family. This study, descriptive in nature, provides insight on families and their interactions as related to computer use in their homes. Better understanding of computers and family life can help provide the basis for a smoother transition for families into the expanding world of information technology. As the expansion of the digital age proceeds, its impact on family life would seem to warrant investigation. Information on who is using computers in the home, how those computers are being used, and how time is spent on computers can add to our appreciation of the impact of computer technology. In addition, the perceived impact of computers needs to be assessed in relation to outcomes for family life- interaction, relationships, and familial organization.

Nakamura, Megumi Esperanza. "Mixed families : an ethnographic study of Japanese/British families in Edinburgh". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/16447.

Texto completo
Resumen
Studies on mixed race and/or ethnicity families have tended to focus on the child’s struggle with identity. Although this topic is very important, in order to better understand how mixed families function as a whole, and how mixed children are socialised, my thesis explored the entire family, with a focus on the parents and kin. Specifically, I looked at the negotiations that take place between the Japanese mothers’ and British fathers’ differences, and the way in which culture, including customs, beliefs, and preferences, are then shared and transmitted to the mixed children. This qualitative, ethnographic study focused on twelve Japanese/British families in Edinburgh. Because socialisation and the transmission of culture tend to happen in the midst of doing mixed family, the following areas of the mixed families’ lives were explored: everyday lived culture, language choices, and food habits. When examining the foods eaten and the languages spoken by the mixed families, it seems that the mixed families are attempting to transmit both their linguistic and culinary heritages to their children, with their aspiration being to raise bilingual, bicultural children. In addition, this study explored the role that extended family and friends play in the lives of the mixed families as they attempt to form their new mixed family culture. The data collection was the result of 26 months of fieldwork consisting of participant observation at three local Japanese mother/toddler playgroups, interviews with both parents and extended family members, and home observations. Some major findings from the study were that, while mothers still tend to carry a heavier burden when it comes to everyday parenting, particularly in the domestic sphere, the fathers were also found to be involved in many aspects of everyday parenting. Additionally, both maternal and paternal kin were also found to offer the mixed families various types of support, with the most frequently mentioned types of support being practical and emotional. Further, mixed families were found to complicate this idea of ‘national culture’ because nationality is not tied to a culture. In this way, the transmission of culture becomes more fluid, allowing the British man to transmit “Japanese” customs and the Japanese woman to share her “British” interests with her children. Finally, while focusing on the intergenerational transmission of culture from parent to child, we find that children do indeed have agency in the transmission of culture, as they are the ones who ultimately decide whether their cultural heritage is a gift or a burden. The study thus offers a nuanced picture of mixed family lives in contemporary UK.

Glass, Valerie Q. "Black Lesbian Families and Their Relationships With Their Families of Origin". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29515.

Texto completo
Resumen
Twenty-two African American lesbians were interviewed in order to identify and examine the intersection of individual and family processes that African American lesbian couples engage in as a family with members of their families of origin. A qualitative research design based on grounded theory methods was used. Data were interpreted using an integrative framework of postmodern feminism, Black feminism, and symbolic interactionism. Findings revealed three major themes: a) Black lesbian couples go through a coming out process as a couple and as individuals, at times, simultaneously; b) Black lesbian families establish and enforce boundaries to protect their intentional, co-created families, and this boundary definition shapes lesbian family identity, and c) resources accessible from informal social supports by African American lesbian families are different from the types of social support and resources available to Black lesbian individuals. These findings provide valuable insights into lesbian family processes that can assist family studies, feminist scholars, family therapists, and community practitioners in identifying future research directions and clinical practices appropriate for African American lesbian families.
