Resumen
The facet-based two scale model (FTSM) is widely applied in SAR image simulations of the anisotropic ocean surface. However, this model is sensitive to the cutoff parameter and facet size, and the choice of these two parameters is arbitrary. We propose to make an approximation of the cutoff invariant two scale model (CITSM) to improve the simulation efficiency while remaining the robustness to cutoff wavenumbers. Meanwhile, the robustness to facet sizes is obtained by correcting the geometrical optics (GO) solution, taking into account the slope probability density function (PDF) correction induced by the spectrum within an individual facet. The new FTSM, with less dependence on cutoff parameters and facet sizes, is proved to be reasonable in the comparisons with advanced analytical models and experimental data. Finally, SAR images of the ocean surface and ship wakes with various facet sizes are provided to prove the operability and applicability of our model.

Resumen
Currently, it is not understood how metal nanoparticles influence the formation of protein fibrils, although recent literature highlights that the shape and chemical composition of such nanoparticles can strongly influence the process. Understanding this process at a fundamental level can potentially unlock routes to the development of new therapeutics, as well as novel materials for technological applications. This requires a microscopic picture of the behaviour of amyloidogenic proteins on metal surfaces. Using replica exchange molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the conformation of the model amyloidogenic peptide, Aβ(16–22), on different gold and silver surfaces. The conformation of the peptide on gold surfaces also shows a strong facet dependence, with fibril-like conformations being promoted in the 100 surface and inhibited on the 111 surface. A smaller degree of facet dependence is seen for silver with the peptide behaving similar on both of these. The difference in the facet dependence can be related to the difference between direct adsorption onto the gold 111 surface, with a preference towards indirect (water mediated) adsorption onto the other surfaces. This new information on the behaviour of an amyloidogenic peptide on metal surfaces can give insight into the size-dependent effect of nanoparticles on fibril formation and the use of surfaces to control fibrillation.

Resumen
Objective. To clarify indications for dynamic and rigid stabilization based on the analysis of correlation between neuroimaging parameters of facet joints (FJ) and clinical outcomes of surgical treatment of patients with degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine. Material and Methods. A total of 141 patients with degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine were surgically treated. Patients were divided into three groups: patients of Group I (n = 48) underwent surgical intervention with artificial intervertebral disc prosthesis; those of Group II (n = 42) – with interbody fusion and combined transpedicular and transfacetal stabilization; and those of Group III (n = 51) – with interbody fusion and bilateral transpedicular stabilization. The correlation between long-term clinical outcomes (pain syndrome according to VAS, functional state according to ODI, and satisfaction with surgical result according to MacNab scale) and preoperative neuroimaging parameters of FJ (degenerative changes according to Fujiwara, facet angle magnitudes, and the presence of tropism) was analyzed. Results. A direct significant nonparametric correlation of neuroimaging parameters of facet angles and FJ tropism with long-term clinical outcomes of surgical treatment according to VAS and ODI was revealed. It was established that good clinical outcomes were achieved with the following preoperative parameters: in Group I, the facet angle was less than 60°, while the presence of tropism had no correlation dependence; in Group II, the facet angle – more than 60°, in the absence of FJ tropism; and in Group III, the facet angle – more than 60°, in the presence of FJ tropism. Conclusion. Objective neuroimaging parameters of the facet angle magnitude of less than 60°, regardless of the presence of tropism, allow performing total arthroplasty. If the facet angle is more than 60°, the rigid stabilization of the operated segment is indicated; in the absence of tropism, a contralateral transfacetal fixation is possible, and in its presence – a bilateral transpedicular stabilization is reasonable.

Resumen
This paper studies the cathodic corrosion of a spherical single crystal of platinum in an aqueous alkaline electrolyte, to map out the detailed facet dependence of the corrosion structures forming during this still largely unexplored electrochemical phenomenon. We find that anisotropic corrosion of the platinum electrode takes place in different stages. Initially, corrosion etch pits are formed, which reflect the local symmetry of the surface: square pits on (100) facets, triangular pits on (111) facets, and rectangular pits on (110) facets. We hypothesize that these etch pits are formed through a ternary metal hydride corrosion intermediate. In contrast to anodic corrosion, the (111) facet corrodes the fastest, and the (110) facet corrodes the slowest. For cathodic corrosion on the (100) facet and on higher-index surfaces close to the (100) plane, the etch pit destabilizes in a second growth stage, by etching faster in the (111) direction, leading to arms in the etch pit, yielding a concave octagon-shaped pit. In a third growth stage, these arms develop side arms, leading to a structure that strongly resembles a self-similar diffusion-limited growth pattern, with strongly preferred growth directions.

Resumen
Vivianite plays an important role in alleviating the phosphorus crisis and phosphorus pollution. The dissimilatory iron reduction has been found to trigger the biosynthesis of vivianite in soil environments, but the mechanism behind this remains largely unexplored. Herein, by regulating the crystal surfaces of iron oxides, we explored the influence of different crystal surface structures on the synthesis of vivianite driven by microbial dissimilatory iron reduction. The results showed that different crystal faces significantly affect the reduction and dissolution of iron oxides by microorganisms and the subsequent formation of vivianite. In general, goethite is more easily reduced by Geobacter sulfurreducens than hematite. Compared with Hem_{100} and Goe_L{110}, Hem_{001} and Goe_H{110} have higher initial reduction rates (approximately 2.25 and 1.5 times, respectively) and final Fe(II) content (approximately 1.56 and 1.20 times, respectively). In addition, in the presence of sufficient PO43−, Fe(II) combined to produce phosphorus crystal products. The final phosphorus recoveries of Hem_{001} and Goe_H{110} systems were about 5.2 and 13.6%, which were 1.3 and 1.6 times of those of Hem_{100} and Goe_L{110}, respectively. Material characterization analyses indicated that these phosphorous crystal products are vivianite and that different iron oxide crystal surfaces significantly affected the size of the vivianite crystals. This study demonstrates that different crystal faces can affect the biological reduction dissolution of iron oxides and the secondary biological mineralization process driven by dissimilatory iron reduction.

Resumen
Objective To study morphological and radiological parameters of facet joints depending on the grade of the intervertebral disk degeneration. Materials and methods To study the facet joints of the lumbar spine in 145 patients with various grades of degeneration according to Pfirrmann and treated using rigid fixation and TLIF technology, MSCT in 2-energy mode and morphological investigation of the intraoperative material were performed. Results In Pfirrmann grade 2, an increase in the volumetric content of chondrocytes, Hounsfield density of the cartilage plate, and the level of Ca in the facet joints was visualized. They indicate that the joint remains functional. In Pfirrmann grade 5, deep pathological changes occurred with violation of the architectonics of the cartilage formations of the facet joints, formation of bone elements and connective tissue growth into the cartilage and bone structures of the joint, which correlated with the results of MSCT. Conclusion The data obtained show that there is a close relationship between morphological and radiological changes in the facet joints. Modulating the data obtained allows us to obtain objective criteria for evaluating the grade of pathological processes in facet joints and use them as a diagnostic component when planning decompression and stabilizing operations in patients with degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine.

Resumen
Abstract The faceting and migration of individual triple junctions in Zn tricrystals under a constant driving force was investigated. The triple junction (TJ) was formed by three [101̅0] tilt grain boundaries (GBs) with misorientation angles θ of 43°, 37° and 6°. The stationary shape of the migrating triple junction was studied, and the migration rate was measured in-situ between 670 and 688 K using polarized light. In some experimental runs, a facet was formed on the θ = 37° [101̅0] tilt GB. This facet was parallel to the close-packed plane in the constrained coincidence site lattice (CCSL). The length of this facet decreases with increasing temperature and becomes zero at 688 K. The temperature dependence of the facet length is better described by the mean-field Andreev approximation than by the solid-on-solid model. The step energy estimated in the framework of the Bonzel approximation is about 0.1 eV/atom. In other experimental runs, the θ = 37° [101̅0] tilt GB did not facet and remained rough in the same temperature interval. This fact allowed us to compare the stationary migration of the same TJ with faceted and rough GBs. ATJ formed by faceted GBs migrates one to two orders of magnitude more slowly in comparison with a rough TJ. An unrealistically high value of the apparent migration activation enthalpy of faceted TJs can appear due to the changing geometry of faceted GBs, similar to the case of migration of faceted twin tips.

Resumen
Abstract Molecular dynamics simulations are used to examine the migration behavior of one incoherent twin, a Σ3 (11 8 5) / (8 11 5) grain boundary. The boundary is known to exhibit non-Arrhenius boundary migration that slows as temperature increases. This behavior is examined in 165 metastable structures of the same boundary and in a large simulation cell where smaller length scales can have less of an effect. The metastable boundaries show diverse migration behaviors from non-Arrhenius to Arrhenius, though the majority of them exhibit non-Arrhenius behavior. The large simulation cell sizes show no dependence on system size, eliminating concerns about the effect of facet nucleation on the migration in periodic simulation cells. However, facet structures play an important role in the migration of the metastable boundaries. Boundaries with larger facets typically migrate faster than those with smaller facets and with defects in the boundary structure.

Resumen
The polarization dependence of the photosensitivity (PS) of the Schottky barrier photodiodes based on the InGaAs / GaAs quantum well (QW) structures has been studied using the in-plane photoexcitation of the QW by linearly-polarized light through a cleaved facet. The interband optical transitions involving the quantum confined heavy-hole (hh) and the light hole (lh) states were identified in the PS spectra by their different polarization dependences. The latter follow the theoretical ones for the absorption coefficient with good agreement. The effect of lifting of the polarization selection rules in the QW due to the hh and lh mixing at the QW heterointerface has been studied both theoretically and experimentally. The importance of taking this effect into account in analysis of the PS polarization dependence in the excited state transition bands has been shown.

Resumen
BackgroundNicotine dependence has been shown to represent a heritable condition, and several research groups have performed linkage analysis to identify genomic regions influencing this disorder though only a limited number of the findings have been replicated.MethodIn the present study, a genome-wide linkage scan for nicotine dependence was conducted in a community sample of 950 probands and 1204 relatives recruited through the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Family Alcoholism Study. A modified version of the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism (SSAGA) with additional questions that probe nicotine use was used to derive DSM-IV nicotine dependence diagnoses.ResultsA locus on chromosome 2q31.1 at 184 centiMorgans nearest to marker D2S2188 yielded a logarithm (base 10) of odds (LOD) score of 3.54 (point-wise empirical p=0.000012). Additional peaks of interest were identified on chromosomes 2q13, 4p15.33-31, 11q25 and 12p11.23-21. Follow-up analyses were conducted examining the contributions of individual nicotine dependence symptoms to the chromosome 2q31.1 linkage peak as well as examining the relationship of this chromosomal region to alcohol dependence.ConclusionsThe present report suggests that chromosome 2q31.1 confers risk to the development of nicotine dependence and that this region influences a broad range of nicotine dependence symptoms rather than a specific facet of the disorder. Further, the results show that this region is not linked to alcohol dependence in this population, and thus may influence nicotine dependence specifically.

Resumen
In this paper, we report on electrically pumped terahertz emitters based on silicon doped with boron acceptors. At cryogenic temperatures, three narrow spectral emission lines attributed to radiative transitions from p-like excited hydrogenic states to the s-like Γ8 ground state associated with the boron dopants were observed centered around 8 THz. The spectral emission line center frequencies were in remarkable agreement with values reported from absorption measurements and theoretical calculations. The total time-resolved terahertz emission power was found to be up to 31 μW per device facet. We have solved the rate equations describing the populations in the hydrogenic dopant states involved in the emission mechanism and derived expressions for the current pumping and temperature dependence of the emitted terahertz power, yielding excellent agreement with the experimental data. These results suggest that silicon-based terahertz emitters may be fabricated without epitaxial quantum wells. The observed temperature dependence suggests that electric field assisted thermal escape of carriers from upper hydrogenic states may be responsible for lower output powers at higher temperatures.

Resumen
AbstractElectromagnetic scattering from the sea surface is of great significance in radar detection, target recognition, ocean remote sensing, etc. By introducing the action spectrum, the modified spatio-temporal variation wave spectrum is used to establish a nonlinear sea surface with currents in this paper. Traditional capillary wave modification facet scattering model (CWMFSM) can only calculate the backscattering from the wind-driven sea surface. By using the new spatio-temporal variation wave spectrum to modify the scattering amplitude of every facet, the new CWMFSM can be used to calculate the nonlinear sea surface scattering with surface currents. Therefore, the model simultaneously considers the modulation of sea surface wind and currents to the radar back echo. The dependence of backscattering coefficient from nonlinear sea surface on the incident angle and the polarization are discussed. The results verify that the nonlinear model is more consistent with the measurement data. This paper also investigates the Doppler spectrum characteristics of the sea with currents. It is found that the effect of wave–current interaction on Doppler spectra is weaker than that of wave–wave interaction. The SAR images of nonlinear sea surfaces are also simulated and different bands, polarizations, and baseline length effects on sea current detection performance of along-track interference SAR are analyzed.

Resumen
The outer surface of the facet lenses in the compound eyes of moths consists of an array of excessive cuticular protuberances, termed corneal nipples. We have investigated the moth-eye corneal nipple array of the facet lenses of 19 diurnal butterfly species by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscope, as well as by optical modelling. The nipples appeared to be arranged in domains with almost crystalline, hexagonal packing. The nipple distances were found to vary only slightly, ranging from about 180 to 240 nm, but the nipple heights varied between 0 (papilionids) and 230 nm (a nymphalid), in good agreement with previous work. The nipples create an interface with a gradient refractive index between that of air and the facet lens material, because their distance is distinctly smaller than the wavelength of light. The gradient in the refractive index was deduced from effective medium theory. By dividing the height of the nipple layer into 100 thin slices, an optical multilayer model could be applied to calculate the reflectance of the facet lenses as a function of height, polarization and angle of incidence. The reflectance progressively diminished with increased nipple height. Nipples with a paraboloid shape and height 250 nm, touching each other at the base, virtually completely reduced the reflectance for normally incident light. The calculated dependence of the reflectance on polarization and angle of incidence agreed well with experimental data, underscoring the validity of the modelling. The corneal nipples presumably mainly function to reduce the eye glare of moths that are inactive during the day, so to make them less visible for predators. Moths are probably ancestral to the diurnal butterflies, suggesting that the reduced size of the nipples of most butterfly species indicates a vanishing trait. This effect is extreme in papilionids, which have virtually absent nipples, in line with their highly developed status. A similar evolutionary development can be noticed for the tapetum of the ommatidia of lepidopteran eyes. It is most elaborate in moth-eyes, but strongly reduced in most diurnal butterflies and absent in papilionids.

Resumen
AbstractIn recent years, there has been a renewed interest in the relationship between intelligence and personality. Extraversion, in particular, has been suggested to influence intelligence, but the direction of this relationship has been controversial (Wolf & Ackerman, 2005). In a young adult sample, the NEO PI-R was completed by 103 pairs of monozygotic twins, 181 pairs of dizygotic twins and 210 of their nontwin siblings. IQ data (Multidimensional Aptitude Battery) were available for approximately three quarters of this sample, and were collected at 16 years as part of an ongoing study of cognition conducted by the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. All extraversion facets were significantly influenced by genes with both additive and nonadditive genetic effects being important (heritabilities ranged from .25 for activity to .54 for warmth). While a significant correlation between the extraversion domain score and IQ was not found, the extraversion facet of excitement-seeking (E5) was significantly negatively correlated with both verbal (r = −.15) and performance (r = −.11) IQ scores. The facet of gregariousness was significantly correlated with verbal IQ only (r = −.09). The relationship between excitement-seeking and IQ was further shown to be solely due to additive genetic influences. These common genetic effects may stem from a dependence on brain dopamine, a neurotransmitter that has been implicated in both personality and cognition.

Resumen
Measurements of the cathodoluminescence (CL) and the degree of polarization (DOP) of (CL) from the facet of a GaAs substrate and in the vicinity of a SiN stripe are reported and analyzed. The deformation induced by the SiN stripe is estimated by fitting the measured DOP to 3D finite element method (FEM) simulations. The deformation is found to be more complex than an initial condition of biaxial stress in the SiN. A ratio of fit coefficients suggests that the dependence of DOP on strain is described by equations presented in Appl. Opt. 59, 5506–5520 (2020). These equations give a DOP that is either proportional to a weighted difference of the principal components of strain in the measurement plane, or proportional to the shear strain in the measurement plane, depending on the chosen orientation of the measurement axes.
