Thermal preconditioning is a process in which coal/water mixtures are vaporized to produce coal/steam suspensions, and then superheated to allow the coal to devolatilize producing suspensions of char particles in hydrocarbon gases and steam. This final product of the process can be injected without atomization, and burned directly in a gas turbine combustor. This paper reports on the results of an experimental program in which thermally preconditioned coal/water mixture was successfully burned with a stable flame in a gas turbine combustor test rig. Tests were performed at a mixture flowrate of 300 lb/hr and combustor pressure of 8 atm. The coal/water mixture was thermally preconditioned and injected into the combustor over a temperature range from 350°F to 600°F, and combustion air was supplied at between 600°F to 725°F. Test durations varied between 10 and 20 min. Major results of the combustion testing were that: A stable flame was maintained over a wide equivalence ratio range, between φ = 2.2 (rich) and 0.2 (lean); and combustion efficiency of over 99 percent was achieved when the mixture was preconditioned to 600°F and the combustion air preheated to 725°F. Measurements of ash particulates, captured in the exhaust sampling probe located 20 in. from the injector face, show typical sizes collected to be about 1 μm, with agglomerates of these particulates to be not more than 8 μm. The original mean coal particle size for these tests, prior to preconditioning, was 25 μm. Results of additional tests showed that one third of the sulfur contained in the solids of a coal/water mixture with 3 percent sulfur was evolved in gaseous form (under mild thermolized conditions) mainly as H2S with the remainder as light mercaptans.

Spherical carbon nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel polymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde in the presence of CTAB(cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) and subsequent carbonization at 900°C. It is found that the amount of CTAB, water and catalyst showed a significant impact on the morphology and size of carbon nanoparticles. According to the BET surface area and capacitance, the nanoparticles were divided into two groups. The carbon nanoparticles with surface area of 725-758 m2/g showed capacitance between 120-140 F/g, while those with surface area of 596-649 m2/g showed capacitance only 60-80 F/g. Difference in the pore size of 1.5 nm to 3.0 nm probably contributed to the difference of capacitance.

Native phytochrome (124 kdalton) was isolated from etiolated seedlings of Avena sativa L. cv. Pirol (Baywa, Munich). From low temperature spectra (0°C to - 165 °C) of phytochrome samples irradiated either with red or far-red light, spectra of intermediates were calculated. Both absorption bands of the phytochrome chromophore were reported. On the pathway Pr → Pfr, native phytochrome does not form a bleached intermediate (meta-Rb) in contrast to degraded phytochrome. An additional intermediate, meta-Rc (λmax = 725 nm), is formed instead. On the reverse pathway only two intermediates were found, lumi-F and meta-F. Oscillator strengths′ values were calculated and interpreted in terms of chromophore conformation. A scheme of intermediates for native phytochrome is presented.

AbstractWe are interested in entire solutions for the semilinear biharmonic equation Δ2u = f(u) in ℝN, where f(u) = eu or –u–p (p > 0). For the exponential case, we prove that for the polyharmonic problem Δ2mu = eu with positive integer m, any classical entire solution verifies Δ2m–1u < 0; this completes the results of Dupaigne et al. (Arch. Ration. Mech. Analysis208 (2013), 725–752) and Wei and Xu (Math. Annalen313 (1999), 207–228). We also obtain a refined asymptotic expansion of the radial separatrix solution to Δ2u = eu in ℝ3, which answers a question posed by Berchio et al. (J. Diff. Eqns252 (2012), 2569–2616). For the negative power case, we show the non-existence of the classical entire solution for any 0 < p ⩽ 1.

The recently discovered, chlorophyll-f-containing, far-red photosystem II (FR-PSII) supports far-red light photosynthesis. Participation and kinetics of spectrally shifted far-red pigments are directly observable and separated from that of bulk chlorophyll-a. We present an ultrafast transient absorption study of FR-PSII, investigating energy transfer and charge separation processes. Results show a rapid subpicosecond energy transfer from chlorophyll-a to the long-wavelength chlorophylls-f/d. The data demonstrate the decay of an ∼720-nm negative feature on the picosecond-to-nanosecond timescales, coinciding with charge separation, secondary electron transfer, and stimulated emission decay. An ∼675-nm bleach attributed to the loss of chl-a absorption due to the formation of a cation radical, PD1+•, is only fully developed in the nanosecond spectra, indicating an unusually delayed formation. A major spectral feature on the nanosecond timescale at 725 nm is attributed to an electrochromic blue shift of a FR-chlorophyll among the reaction center pigments. These time-resolved observations provide direct experimental support for the model of Nürnberg et al. [D. J. Nürnberg et al., Science 360, 1210–1213 (2018)], in which the primary electron donor is a FR-chlorophyll and the secondary donor is chlorophyll-a (PD1 of the central chlorophyll pair). Efficient charge separation also occurs using selective excitation of long-wavelength chlorophylls-f/d, and the localization of the excited state on P720* points to a smaller (entropic) energy loss compared to conventional PSII, where the excited state is shared over all of the chlorin pigments. This has important repercussions on understanding the overall energetics of excitation energy transfer and charge separation reactions in FR-PSII.

In order to realize alternative fueling for military and commercial use, industry guidelines be met. These aviation fueling requirements are outlined in MIL-DTL-83133F(2008) or ASTM D 7566-Annex standards and are classified as “drop-in” fuel replacements. This paper provides combustor performance data for synthetic-paraffinic-kerosene- (SPK-) type (Fisher-Tropsch (FT)) fuel and blends with JP8+100, relative to JP-8+100 as baseline fueling. Data were taken at various nominal inlet conditions: 75psia (0.52 MPa) at 500°F (533 K), 125 psia (0.86 MPa) at 625°F (603 K), 175 psia (1.21 MPa) at 725°F (658 K), and 225 psia (1.55 MPa) at 790 F (694 K). Combustor performance analysis assessments were made for the change in flame temperatures, combustor efficiency, wall temperatures, and exhaust plane temperatures at 3%, 4%, and 5% combustor pressure drop (%P) for fuel:air ratios (F/A) ranging from 0.010 to 0.025. Significant general trends show lower liner temperatures and higher flame and combustor outlet temperatures with increases in FT fueling relative to JP8+100 fueling. The latter affects both turbine efficiency and blade/vane life. In general, 100% SPK-FT fuel and blends with JP-8+100 produce less particulates and less smoke and have lower thermal impact on combustor hardware.

Введение. Обзор литературы, посвященной изучению закономерностей экономической социализации подростков, позволяет сформулировать предположение о том, что отношение подростков к деньгам (осознанность отношения к деньгам и уверенность в своих финансовых правах) опосредовано характеристиками их личностной зрелости. В статье впервые представлены результаты эмпирической проверки этой гипотезы. Методы. В исследовании приняли участие 1145 подростков в возрасте 13–17 лет (725 девочек и 418 мальчиков), не имеющих самостоятельных источников дохода. Сбор эмпирических данных осуществлялся с помощью «Шкалы самооценки зрелости личности» (А. В. Микляева) и «Шкалы отношения подростков к деньгам» (I. Beutler, C. Gudmunson). Результаты. Показатель финансовой осознанности увеличивается по мере взросления (F = 4,17 при р < 0,01), показатель финансовых прав претерпевает менее выраженные изменения (F = 1,34 при р > 0,05). Показатель финансовой осознанности достоверно выше в выборке девочек (F = 17,16 при р < 0,001). На протяжении всего старшего подросткового возраста показатель финансовых прав положительно связан с показателем регуляторной зрелости (F = 3,11 при р = 0,05), показатель финансовой осознанности положительно связан с показателем рефлексивной зрелости (F = 9,92 при р = 0,001) и отрицательно – с показателями регуляторной (F = 7,92 при р = 0,001) и когнитивной (F = 3,50 при р = 0,03) зрелости. Обсуждение результатов. Результаты интерпретируются в контексте социально-психологического подхода к становлению личности в процессе взросления. Делается вывод о том, что фиксируемое изменение отношения к деньгам в подростковом возрасте оказывается тесно сопряжено с оценкой подростками своего личностного потенциала, в частности – тех его сторон, которые позволяют принимать самостоятельные финансовые решения. Формулируются предложения для разработки программ мероприятий, направленных на содействие конструктивной экономической социализации подростков.

The surface of hot rolled ribbed steel bar after remained-heat-treatment process readily corrodes and rusts on store and transportation process due to falling off of the surface of its oxide layer in the steel production. By studying different cooling intensity having what effect on rebar structure, mechanical property and the thickness and component of surface oxide layer, this paper analyses the influence factor of strengthening mechanism and anti-corrosion on the surface oxide layer of hot rolled ribbed steel bars (HRB). The result indicates that there is a certain extent improvement on the bar’s yield strength and strength of extension after remained heat treatment, and that this change in large size bar is more distinct than which in small size’s. The most distinct strengthening effect happens in a temperature on cooling table about 720°C. Above 820°C —the temperature on cooling table, all metallographic structure consist of ferrite and pearlite (F+P); under 725°C, the sclerotic structure like bainite appears. With the temperature on cooling table arising, surface oxide layer thickens. In low temperature on cooling table, the sample integrates with matrix comparatively closely and has relatively better anti-corrode property.

Summary:Protein (P), fat (F), and carbohydrate (C) concentration in expressed human bank milk was determined by infrared analysis of 2,554 samples from 224 mothers. The mean contents of P, F, C, and energy (E, calculated from P, F, and C) were 9.0 g/L, 39.0 g/L, 71.9 g/L, and 696 kcal/L, respectively. There was a large variation in the concentration of energy‐yielding macronutrients. The contents of P. F, C, and E in the samples with the highest values (97.5 percentile) were 2.3‐, 4.8‐, 1.2‐, and 2.3‐fold, respectively, above the contents in the samples with the lowest values (2.5 percentile). The P content decreased exponentially during the 1st 8 months, followed by an increase during the following months. The F content decreased during the 1st 4 months, followed by an almost linear increase. The possible influence of different maternal characteristics on the macronutrient content of the milk was examined. The main results were as follows: the P and F contents increased slightly with increasing body mass index of the mother, the P content decreased with increasing amounts of milk delivered to the milk bank, and the F content was higher in mothers delivering large amounts of milk. By selecting incoming milk with a high P content, we have developed a “high‐protein” milk with a P content of about 12 g/L (true protein) and an E content of about 725 kcal/L. Thus, by continuous monitoring of macronutrient content in human bank milk it is possible to develop a “high‐protein” milk with sufficient P and E content to cover the needs of preterm infants with very low birth weights (< 1,500 g).

We prove a functional equation for the characteristic ideal of the "big" Selmer group 𝒳(𝒯ℱ/F cyc ) associated to an ordinary Hida family of elliptic modular forms over the cyclotomic ℤp extension of a general number field F, under the assumption that there is at least one arithmetic specialization whose Selmer group is torsion over its Iwasawa algebra. For a general number field, the two-variable cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for ordinary Hida family is not proved and this can be thought of as an evidence to the validity of the Iwasawa main conjecture. The central idea of the proof is to prove a variant of the result of Perrin-Riou [Groupes de Selmer et accouplements; cas particulier des courbes elliptiques, Doc. Math.2003 (2003) 725–760, Extra Volume: Kazuya Kato's fiftieth birthday] by constructing a generalized pairing on the individual Selmer groups corresponding to the arithmetic points and make use of the appropriate specialization techniques of Ochiai [Euler system for Galois deformations, Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble)55(1) (2005) 113–146].

Detta arbete handlar om förslag till direktiv COM(2016)723/F1och dess regler om rekonstruktionsplanen och gäldenärens avtal samt gällande rätt på samma område. Arbetet handlar om problematiken som råder i gällande rätt och om reglerna i förslaget skulle kunna åtgärda dessa problem vid implementering av reglerna i svensk rätt. I gällande rätt får gäldenärer som inlett företagsrekonstruktion skydd mot att motparten häver ett avtal om denne före beslutet om företagsrekonstruktion erhållit rätt att häva avtalet på grund av att gäldenären hamnat i dröjsmål med prestation. I förslaget ges gäldenären istället rätt att ansöka om att avbryta en eller flera borgenärers rätt att driva in sin fordran denne har mot gäldenären. I gällande rätt avseende rekonstruktionsplanen finns inga krav på innehåll eller att den ska fastställas av en myndighet. Den ska tillställas rätten och borgenärer men dessa har inget att invända mot gällande planens utformning eller innehåll. I förslaget ställs dels krav på vad planen ska innehålla samt att en ansvarig myndighet och borgenärerna ska bekräfta och anta planen. Det är dessa regler som granskas i uppsatsen och en analys sker utifrån problematiken som författaren identifierat i den gällande rätten och i vilken mån reglerna i förslaget kan lösa problemen.  Det författaren kommit fram till är att flertalet problem som identifierats avseende gäldenärens avtal går att lösa genom en implementering av direktivet. Andra problem är inte möjliga att lösa enbart genom reglerna i förslaget utan kan behöva kompletteras av andra regler i nationell rätt och vissa problem kanske det inte är lämpligt att lösa då det snarare skulle leda till att nya problem skulle uppkomma. Problemen som föreligger gällande rekonstruktionsplanen i gällande rätt skulle lösas genom en implementering av direktivet då det i gällande rätt råder en avsaknad av regler medan rekonstruktionsplanen är starkt reglerad i förslaget.
This essay is about the proposal for directive COM(2016)723/F1and its regulations regarding restructuring plan and debtors contracts along with the Swedish regulation of today regarding the same areas. The essay is about the problem areas in the Swedish regulation and to what extent the problems were to be solved by implementing the directive in Swedish law. According to Swedish law the debtors whose been granted restructuring receives a protection of their contracts meaning that the counterpart can’t cancel the contract if they before the initiation of corporate reconstruction had the right to cancel the contract due to the debtor’s delay. In the proposal the debtor are instead given the opportunity to apply for stay of individual enforcement actions, meaning that one or more creditors can’t collect their claim. There are no content requirements or requirements of acceptance regarding the restructuring plan in Swedish law. The debtor are to give the plan to a court of law and to the debtor’s creditors but neither have any right to object due to the plan being inadequate in some sort of way. The proposal presents regulations demanding both the contents of the plan as well as an authority to accept the plan and creditor’s right to vote for the plan’s acceptance. It’s these rules that are being reviewed in the essay and the author presents an analysis based on the problem areas in Swedish law and to what extent the regulations in the proposal can solve the problems.  The author’s conclusion is that multiple problems identified in Swedish law considering debtors contracts is possible to solve by implementing the directive. Other problems aren’t possible to resolve merely by the regulations in the proposal but might be able to solve by supplementing them with national regulations and lastly some problems might not be appropriate to solve because it might lead to new problems occurring. The problems due to the restructuring plan in Swedish law would be solved by implementing the directive since there is a lack of rules in Swedish law while the plan is highly regulated in the proposal.

L'originalitat de l'arquitectura d'Antoni Gaudí (Reus 1852- Barcelona 1926) ha sorprès des de la primeria del segle XX diverses generacions de crítics i historiadors. Aquest estudi intenta situar-la ideològicament. Per això partim d'una crítica del concepte de Modernisme, tot analitzant les diverses ideologies que s'integraren en aquest moviment. Això ens portava a recercar les arrels romàntiques de la ideologia de Gaudí, l'idealisme alemany i l'arquitectura neogòtica europea, especialment en les figures de Pugin i Ruskin.
De la filosofia alemanya es dedueix el concepte d'arquitectura cristiana identificada amb el gòtic; dels dos teòrics anglesos una sèrie de preceptes morals que havien de caracteritzar aquesta arquitectura. Alhora es justifica com es transmeté el pensament romàntic a Catalunya a través de Piferrer i Rogent.
Una anàlisi del Park Güell com a símbol de la dialèctica entre naturalesa i cultura ens condueix al temple de Delfos i als plantejaments de l'Estètica de Hegel i d'El Naixement de la Tragèdia de Nietzsche,
A la Sagrada Família, en canvi, ens enfrontem a dos misticismes. D'una banda a l'arquitectura de l'espai concebut com a buit, com a esperit; de l'altra a l'arquitectura simbòlica del material, dos conceptes que procedien de Hegel.
Finalment, a la cripta de l'església de la Colònia Güell, Gaudí portarà a terme la síntesi d'aquests dos misticismes, tot recercant l'espiritualitat del material.
The originality of Antoni's Gaudí (1852- 1926) architecture has amazed several generations of critics and historians from the early 20th century onwards. This thesis tries to place it ideologically. This is the reason why we set up from a criticism of the concept of Catalan Modernist Movement, with an analysis of the ideologies that composed this movement. This takes us to the romantic roots of Gaudí's ideology, the German idealism, and European gothic revival, specially focusing on Pugin and Ruskin.
From German philosophy we deduce the concept of Christian architecture identified with gothic and from the English thinkers some moral precepts that gave character to this architecture. We also justify how this romantic architectonic thought was transferred to Catalonia along the 19th century by Piferrer and Rogent.
The analysis of the Park Güell as a symbol of the dialectic between nature and culture leads us to the temple of Delphi and to the thesis of Hegel's Aesthetics and Nietzsche's The Birth of the Tragedy.
Moreover, we find two mysticisms in the Sagrada Família. First, we stand up to the architecture of the space, as vacuum, as spirit. Likewise, we challenge with symbolic architecture of material; two concepts that came from Hegel.
Finally, in the crypt of the church of Colònia Güell, Gaudí will achieve the synthesis of these two mysticisms, searching for the spirituality of material.

York Bowen (1884-1961), an English composer, dedicated his whole life to piano performance, composition, and pedagogy. With his post-romantic idioms, Bowen left to the world a large number of works, amid a wide variety of music styles in the twentieth century. Bowen’s one hundred approximately piano solo pieces cover several genres, such as sonatas, preludes, impromptus, etudes, ballades, humoresques, songs without words, and so on. In this thesis, the author focuses on Bowen’s Sonata in F Minor, Op. 72, which is one of his most famous piano works. Of Bowen’s six sonatas, this one is the largest in scale and the most complete in form. However, there is a paucity of research into this work. The chapters in this thesis elaborate on Bowen’s life, characteristics in composition, the analysis and interpretation of the three movements in Sonata in F Minor, Op. 72. The literature on the recovery of signals and images is vast (e.g., [23, 110, 112, 257, 391, 439, 791, 795, 933, 934, 937, 945, 956, 1104, 1324, 1494, 1495, 1551]). In this Chapter, the specific problem of recovering lost signal intervals from the remaining known portion of the signal is considered. Signal recovery is also a topic of Chapter 11 on POCS. To this point, sampling has been discrete. Bandlimited signals, we will show, can also be recovered from continuous samples. Our definition of continuous sampling is best presented by illustration.Asignal, f (t), is shown in Figure 10.1a, along with some possible continuous samples. Regaining f (t) from knowledge of ge(t) = f (t)Π(t/T) in Figure 10.1b is the extrapolation problem which has applications in a number of fields. In optics, for example, extrapolation in the frequency domain is termed super resolution [2, 40, 367, 444, 500, 523, 641, 720, 864, 1016, 1099, 1117]. Reconstructing f (t) from its tails [i.e., gi(t) = f (t){1 − Π(t/T)}] is the interval interpolation problem. Prediction, shown in Figure 10.1d, is the problem of recovering a signal with knowledge of that signal only for negative time. Lastly, illustrated in Figure 10.1e, is periodic continuous sampling. Here, the signal is known in sections periodically spaced at intervals of T. The duty cycle is α. Reconstruction of f (t) from this data includes a number of important reconstruction problems as special cases. (a) By keeping αT constant, we can approach the extrapolation problem by letting T go to ∞. (b) Redefine the origin in Figure 10.1e to be centered in a zero interval. Under the same assumption as (a), we can similarly approach the interpolation problem. (c) Redefine the origin as in (b). Then the interpolation problem can be solved by discarding data to make it periodically sampled. (d) Keep T constant and let α → 0. The result is reconstructing f (t) from discrete samples as discussed in Chapter 5. Indeed, this model has been used to derive the sampling theorem [246]. Figures 10.1b-e all illustrate continuously sampled versions of f (t).

The Shell DeNOx System (SDS) is an innovative selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system in which NOx emission reduction efficiencies greater than 90% can be achieved from fluegas streams at temperatures as low as 163 °C (325 °F). The low temperature capability allows the SDS to be positioned at the tail-end of a furnace convection section or gas turbine HRSG. This feature permits the installation of SDS without the extensive retrofit costs associated with the implementation of conventional (medium or high) temperature SCRs which require a 288–385 °C (550–725 °F) or 427–593 °C (800–1100 °F) temperature window, respectively. This paper will discuss the application and operating experience of the SDS on gas turbines heat recovery steam generators (GT-HRSG).

In order to realize alternative fueling for military and commercial use, the industry has set forth guidelines that must be met by each fuel. These aviation fueling requirements are outlined in MIL-DTL-83133F(2008) or ASTM D 7566-Annex standards and are classified as “drop-in” fuel replacements. This paper provides combustor performance data for synthetic-paraffinic-kerosene- (SPK-) type (Fisher-Tropsch (FT)) fuel and blends with JP-8+100, relative to JP-8+100 as baseline fueling. Data were taken at various nominal inlet conditions: 75 psia (0.52 MPa) at 500 °F (533 K), 125 psia (0.86 MPa) at 625 °F (603 K), 175 psia (1.21 MPa) at 725 °F (658 K), and 225 psia (1.55 MPa) at 790 °F (694 K). Combustor performance analysis assessments were made for the change in flame temperatures, combustor efficiency, wall temperatures, and exhaust plane temperatures at 3%, 4%, and 5% combustor pressure drop (%ΔP) for fuel:air ratios (F/A) ranging from 0.010 to 0.025. Significant general trends show lower liner temperatures and higher flame and combustor outlet temperatures with increases in FT fueling relative to JP-8+100 fueling. The latter affects both turbine efficiency and blade/vane life. In general, 100% SPK-FT fuel and blends with JP-8+100 produce less particulates and less smoke and have lower thermal impact on combustor hardware.

Process industries such as oil, gas and petrochemical plants have critical process equipment operating at high temperatures. These equipment require periodic comprehensive integrity assessments for safe and reliable operation. Conventional NDE techniques such as manual ultrasonic are not only slow and subjective, but also often unsuccessful beyond 300°F (150°C). There have been tremendous efforts in the industry to invent suitable new technologies for high temperature application. Hence, comprehensive monitoring of large size equipment operating at higher temperatures remained as a challenging task for decades. In line with this requirement, and in an ongoing effort to deploy new technologies, Uthmaniyah Gas Plant (UGP) in Saudi Aramco, one of the largest gas processing plants in the world, partnered with the Inspection Department in a pilot test program to validate a new corrosion mapping technology at high temperature application up to 500°F. Implementation of this breakthrough technology for the first time in Saudi Aramco at UGP has been successful. This technology also has the capability to scan the process equipment at an operating temperature beyond 725°F (385°C). This paper provides an overview of the importance of a comprehensive assessment to critical process equipment operating at high temperature, ongoing developments to enrich the assessment capabilities and how this technology added value in enhancing the safety and reliability of the operating facility.

We report the first experimental investigation on the long standing, fundamental problem of QED intra-atom quantum correlations1,2,3. It is well known that the quantum analysis of the problem of the interacting atoms in free-space, based on a Dicke Hamiltonian, shows an unexpected non causal intra-atom correlation transfer. We show theoretically that the problem is fully resolved by the use of the complete hamiltonian, i.e., including the anti-resonant contribution4. However, in spite of the existence of this satisfactory quantum-theoretical approach, the transfer of QED correlations within a single-mode, plane, Casimir microcavity still shows a somewhat puzzling noncausal behavior when the atoms are correlated by transverse interactions, i.e., taking place in direction parallel to the plane of the cavity and then orthogonal to the K - vector of the allowed mode. The "spatial" conterpart of this problem, the establishment of the transverse "size" of the mode, was already investigated by us in an early paper5. In that work it was demonstrated that the transverse correlation between two atoms inside a microcavity takes place within the coherence length lc = 2λ(fm)1/2, where f and m represent the finesse and the order of the microcavity respectively. By the present work, the investigation is carried out to the theoretical, as said, and the experimental analysis of the complete correlation problem in space-time, then fully implying the Einstein causality within the process. The experimental layout is shown in Fig.1. Two equal, mutually delayed, 50 fs, 10 Mw laser pulses generated by an amplified CPM laser are injected and focussed in a region of 15 μm of diameter in an active microcavity with a molecular solution of oxazine - 725 as active medium: the two pulses are then the "pump" of two identical, virtually "thresholdless" microlasers placed at a transverse distance d in the cavity plane, with d⩽lc.

Abstract High pressure turbine (HPT) blades manufactured from single crystal (SX) materials exhibit tip degradation during service resulting in loss of coatings and parent metal, primarily from abrasion, thermal-mechanical fatigue cracking (TMF), creep, and oxidation. Currently, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Laser Beam Welding (LBW) with Merl 72 and Rene 142 (R142) welding materials are used for repairing the tips of SX HPT blades. Tips repaired with Merl 72, despite the superior oxidation resistance of the cobalt welding material, are prone to cracking due to the low mechanical properties of the Merl 72 welds at temperatures exceeding 1800°F (982°C). Additionally, despite the high strength of R142 in its cast condition, R142 welds are prone to weld stress-strain cracking and thus require preheating of the blades above 1700°F (926°C) to repair the part with a predetermined level of micro cracking present. Preheating can adversely affect the inert atmospheric conditions of the argon protection. This inadequate shielding of the welding area may result in contamination of welds with non-metallic inclusions which reduce creep and TMF properties. The current study focuses on substantiating the replacement of Merl 72 with alternative LW3 and LW4280 nickel based welding materials for minor dimensional restoration and full tip replacement on SX HPT blades with a solid tip cap. LW3 and LW4280 contain 28 vol.% and 49 vol.% gamma prime phase respectively, after post weld aging heat treatment. A time-transient thermal mechanical Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the SX HPT blade was completed for takeoff, cruise, and landing conditions. The resultant temperature and stresses from the FEA study were used as the basis for qualification of the tip repair. Tensile and stress rupture properties of dissimilar SX-LW3 and SX-LW4280 welds produced at ambient temperature using manual GTAW and Laser Direct Energy Deposition (L-DED) on a LAWS1000 welding system utilizing a 3D additive manufacturing (AM) concept were studied. It was demonstrated that LW4280 welds had superior stress rupture, and fatigue properties when compared to M 72. Cyclic oxidation resistance of LW4280 at 2048°F (1120°C) was found to be sufficient to ensure required durability of repaired blades for 6,000 cycles in cases of damage to protective coatings. Some examples of repairs of HPT blades developed using these materials and technologies are provided.

Combustion dynamics have detrimental effects on hardware durability as well as combustor performance and emissions. This paper presents a detailed study on the impact of combustion dynamics on NOx and CO emissions generated from a prototype gas turbine combustor operating at a pressure of 180 psia (12.2 bars) with a pre-heat temperature of 720 F (655.3 K) (E-class machine operating conditions). Two unstable modes are discussed. The first is an intermittent mode, at 750 Hz, that emerges at flame temperatures near 2900°F (1866.5 K), resulting in high NOx and CO emissions. With increasing fuel flow, NOx and CO emissions continue to increase until the flame temperature reaches approximately 3250°F (2061 K), at which point the second acoustic mode begins to dominate. Flame images indicate that the intermittent mode is associated with flame motion which induces the high NOx and CO emissions. The second mode is also a 750 Hz, but of constant amplitude (no intermittency). Operation in this second 750 Hz mode results in significantly reduced NOx and CO emissions. At pressures higher than 180 psia (12.2 bars), the intermittent mode intensifies, leading to flashback at flame temperatures above 2850°F (1839 K). In order to mitigate the intermittent mode, a second configuration of the combustor included an exit area restriction. The exit area restriction eliminated the intermittent mode, resulting in stable operation and low emissions over a temperature range of 2700–3200°F (1755–2033 K). A comparison of the NOx emissions, as function of flame temperature, with previous published data for perfectly premixed indicates that, while the low amplitude 750 Hz oscillations have little effect, the intermittent mode significantly increases emissions. Mode shape analysis shows that the 750 Hz instability corresponds to the 1/4 wave axial mode. In the current research a ceramic liner is used while the previous published data was collected with a quartz liner. Typically, quartz is avoided due to reductions in effective flame temperature by radiation losses. Experiments showed that NOx emissions were not affected by the combustor liner type. This agreement between the quartz and ceramic liners data indicates limited effect from the radiation heat losses on NOx emissions.

Abstract Surfactant-based, SB fluids exhibit complex rheological behavior due to substantial structural changes caused by the molecules self-assembled colloidal aggregation. Temperature and salinity affect their rheology and flow properties. In this study, both rheological and viscoelastic properties for the optimum concentration, 4%, of Aromox® APA-T viscoelastic surfactant (VES) were investigated using two brine solutions; 2 and 4% KCl and wide range of temperatures (72°F – 200°F). Flow properties were examined using a 1/2-in. straight and coiled tubing (CR = 0.019). The results show that increasing solution salinity promotes formation of rod-like micelles and increases its flexibility. Salinity affects micelles growth and their rheological and viscoelastic behavior is very sensitive to the nature and structure of the added salt. Different molecular structures are formed; spherical micelles occur first and then increased temperature and/or salinity promotes the formation of rod-like micelles. Later, rod-like micelles are aligned in the flow direction and form a large super ordered structure of micellar bundles or aggregates called shear induced structure (SIS). Different structures implies different rheological and flow properties. Likewise, rheology improves with increasing temperature up to 100°F. Further increase in temperature reverses the effects and viscosity decreases. In addition, drag reduction and flow characteristics of SB fluids are improved by the addition of salt and/or increasing temperature up to 100°F. Results obtained are in full agreement with rheological and viscoelastic behavior of SB fluids for both salinity and temperature.

Resumen
The main goal of this study was to improve the performance of cold in-place recycling (CIR) mixtures by using a balanced mix design (BMD) approach. This study involved preparing and testing CIR mixtures in the lab at varying contents of bituminous additives and constant content of 1% ce-ment and 3% water. Eight combinations of CIR mixtures were produced for this study using two binders (emulsion and foamed asphalt), compaction efforts (30 and 70 gyrations), and curing processes (72 hours at 140°F and 50°F). Results showed that asphalt pavement analyzer, semicircular bend, and indirect tensile strength tests presented the highest correlation with the change of binder contents. The study successfully used the developed BMD for designing CIR mixtures and selecting their optimum binder contents. It then used three balanced CIR mixtures to construct full-scale pavement sections to validate the BMD approach in the field. A heavy vehicle simulator was used to apply different accelerated loadings on each section. Results showed that the CIR section with 2% binder presented the best rutting performance under truck loading and the highest rutting susceptibility under aircraft loading. Conversely, the CIR section with 3% binder presented the highest cracking resistance under both truck and aircraft loading.

In recent years, several pipe mills have produced heavy-wall, large diameter pipe from plates of microalloyed steels that were controlled-rolled to develop properties to meet the API 5LX Grade 70 or Grade 80 requirements and that were electric resistance welded (ERW) using advanced techniques. The use of advanced electric seam-welding practices on the steels produced using advanced steel making and processing methods offers the possibility of obtaining high strength line pipe at a lower cost than pipes produced from similar steels but with double submerged arc seam welds. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the properties of the pipe body and the ERW seam-weld region of a recently produced heavy-wall X70 line pipe. This report describes the evaluation of that pipe. The mechanical properties of the weld zone from this pipe were evaluated and reported under Task 18-89. Those data are included in this report. A high-frequency electric resistance welded (HFERW) X70 line pipe was evaluated to assess the strength properties, fracture behavior, thermal stability, and susceptibility to environmentally induced degradation that may affect its behavior in gas transmission service. A 20-inch-(508 mm)-diameter by 0.500-inch-(12.7 mm)-wall high-frequency, electric-resistance-welded (HFERW) X70 line pipe was evaluated to assess the strength properties, fracture behavior, thermal stability, and susceptibility to environmentally induced degradation that may affect its behavior in gas transmission service. The steel from which the pipe was produced was processed using advanced steel-making practices that resulted in a low sulfur content and was microalloyed with Cb, V, and Ti. The steel was controlled rolled with 75 percent of the rolling reduction being accomplished at temperatures below 1418 F (770 C); the finishing temperature was 1328 F (720 C) and the steel was hot coiled after finishing. The seam weld was produced by high frequency electric resistance welding and the seam weld region was post-weld normalized.

Endophytes were isolated from 16.7% of surface-disinfested seeds and 100% of stems and roots of field-growth plants. Strains from Israel with broad-spectrum in vitro antibiosis were mainly Bacillus spp., and some were chitinolytic. Following dipping of cut cotton roots into suspensions of these strains, endophytes were detected up to 72 days later by isolation and by autoradiograms of 14C-labelled bacteria. Selected endophytes exhibited biological control potential based on significant reductions in disease severity on cotton inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani or Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum as well as control of Sclerotium rolfsii on bean. Neither salicylic acid nor chitinase levels increased in plants as a result of endophytic colonization, suggesting that the observed biocontrol was not accounted for by PR protein production. Some biocontrol endophytes secreted chitinolytic enzymes. Model endophytic strains inoculated into cotton stems via stem injection showed only limited movement within the stem. When introduced into stems at low concentrations, endophytes increased in population density at the injection site. After examining several experimental and semi-practical inoculation systems, seed treatment was selected as an efficient way to reintroduce most endophytes into plants.
