Resumen
Seeds of Fraser fir [Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.] were soaked in solutions of gibberellins4+7 (GA4+7) at concentrations of 0, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1000 ppm. Following treatment, seeds were germinated in the presence and absence of light at 9/15 hr thermoperiods of 30°/20°C (86°/68°F) and 20°/10°C (68°/50°F). At 30°/20°C (86°/68°F), 42-day germination of seeds maintained in darkness was significantly increased at GA4+7 concentrations of 500 and 600 ppm. Stimulation was not noted for illuminated seeds at 30°/20°C (86°/68°F) or for seeds germinated at 20°/10°C (68°/50°F).

Low frequency electric fields were exposed to various water samples using platinum electrodes mounted near the water surface. Responses were monitored using a spectro-radiometer and a contact-angle goniometer. Treatment of DI (deionized), EZ (Exclusion Zone), and bulk water with certain electromagnetic frequencies resulted in a drop of radiance persisting for at least half an hour. Compared to DI water, however, samples of EZ and bulk water showed lesser radiance drop. Contact-angle goniometric results confirmed that when treated with alternating electric fields (E = 600 ± 150 V/m, f = 7.8 and 1000 Hz), droplets of EZ and bulk water acquired different charges. The applied electric field interacted with EZ water only when electrodes were installed above the chamber, but not beneath. Further, when DI water interacted with an electric field applied from above (E = 600 ± 150 V/m, f = 75 Hz), its radiance profile became similar to that of EZ water. Putting these last two findings together, one can say that application of an electric field on DI water from above (E = 600 ± 150 V/m, f = 7.8 to 75 Hz) may induce a molecular ordering in DI water similar to that of EZ water.

Thermal preconditioning is a process in which coal/water mixtures are vaporized to produce coal/steam suspensions, and then superheated to allow the coal to devolatilize producing suspensions of char particles in hydrocarbon gases and steam. This final product of the process can be injected without atomization, and burned directly in a gas turbine combustor. This paper reports on the results of an experimental program in which thermally preconditioned coal/water mixture was successfully burned with a stable flame in a gas turbine combustor test rig. Tests were performed at a mixture flowrate of 300 lb/hr and combustor pressure of 8 atm. The coal/water mixture was thermally preconditioned and injected into the combustor over a temperature range from 350°F to 600°F, and combustion air was supplied at between 600°F to 725°F. Test durations varied between 10 and 20 min. Major results of the combustion testing were that: A stable flame was maintained over a wide equivalence ratio range, between φ = 2.2 (rich) and 0.2 (lean); and combustion efficiency of over 99 percent was achieved when the mixture was preconditioned to 600°F and the combustion air preheated to 725°F. Measurements of ash particulates, captured in the exhaust sampling probe located 20 in. from the injector face, show typical sizes collected to be about 1 μm, with agglomerates of these particulates to be not more than 8 μm. The original mean coal particle size for these tests, prior to preconditioning, was 25 μm. Results of additional tests showed that one third of the sulfur contained in the solids of a coal/water mixture with 3 percent sulfur was evolved in gaseous form (under mild thermolized conditions) mainly as H2S with the remainder as light mercaptans.

Penelitian dilaksanakan di Kelurahan Korong Gadang, Kecamatan Kuranji, Kota Padang, pada bulan Maret hingga Juni 2023. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk melihat pengaruh dan dosis bokashi kirinyuh yang terbaik terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil terong ungu. Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) dengan 5 perlakuan dan 5 blok, sehingga diperoleh 25 unit percobaan. Perlakuan yang diberikan adalah beberapa dosis bokashi kirinyuh dengan uraian sebagai berikut: A = 0 g/tanaman, B = 200 g/tanaman, C = 400 g/tanaman, D = 600 g/tanaman, E = 800 g/tanaman. Data hasil pengamatan dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan sidik ragam (uji F), apabila F-hitung > F-tabel maka untuk mengetahui pengaruh perlakuan dilanjutkan dengan uji Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) pada taraf nyata 5%. Uji dosis bokashi kirinyuh memberikan pengaruh yang berbeda sangat nyata terhadap tinggi tanaman, panjang buah, diameter buah, jumlah buah per tanaman dan berat buah per tanaman, kemudian memberikan pengaruh yang berbeda nyata terhadap jumlah bunga dan berat buah per petak, serta memberikan pengaruh yang tidak berbeda nyata terhadap umur berbunga dan umur panen. Perlakuan D (600 g/tanaman) memiliki kecenderungan berproduksi lebih baik dibandingkan perlakuan lainnya. Disarankan untuk menggunakan bokashi kirinyuh dengan dosis 600 g/tanaman untuk mendapatkan produksi terong yang optimal.

The herein reported study was conducted to evaluate the parasitic potential of Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) against larvae of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) and Sitophilus oryzae (L.) while, adult pests on the food medium treated with two formulations of diatomaceous earth (DE); Marine (Celite) and fresh water (Perma Guard) as grain protectants. The DE was applied at three dose rates i.e., 200, 400 and 600 ppm, at 25°C temperature and 65% relative humidity. Mortality and emergence of adults of tested insects and parasitoid were observed after 14 and 28 days of exposure respectivly. The highest mortality of C. maculatus was 43.37% against higher dose of Perma Guard (600 ppm) while the maximum mortality of S. oryzae was recorded 39.56% on application of Celite (600 ppm). The maximum mortality of A. calandrae parasitoid was observed 66.86% in S. oryzae infested grains treated with higher dose of Perma Guard (600 ppm), while 63.81% mortality of parasitoid was observed in S. oryzae infested grains at higher dose of Celite DE (600 ppm). The Perma Guard effectively controls population of tested insect’s mortality than the Celite. The highest emergence of C maculatus observed was 62.44% at lower dose of 200 ppm of Perma Guard DE while the highest emergence recorded on application of Celite was 60.66% from C. maculatus. The highest emergence of A. calandrae was 65.65% from S. oryzae at lower dose of 200 ppm of Perma Guard DE while the highest emergence of parasitoid recorded on application of Celite was found 60.66% at lower dose of 200 ppm from C maculatus. The emergence of tested insects and parasitoid increased with the decrease in dose rate of DE in most of the tested combinations. Higher dose (600 ppm) of both DE (Celite and Perma Guard) used in experiment showed mortality of tested insects and parasitoid activity of Anisopteromalus calandrae and furthermore release of A. calandrae on host insects would be adversely affected by use of diatomaceous earth product on stored grains. The experiments were carried out in laboratory of Grain Research, Training and Storage Management cell, Department of Entomology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad.

El acamprosato, comercializado en varios pa¨ªses de la Uni¨®n Europea yautorizado recientemente en EE.UU., est¨¢ indicado en la terapia de mantenimiento dela abstinencia en pacientes dependientes al alcohol sometidos a tratamientodeshabituador. Este f¨¢rmaco presenta como principal problema su bajabiodisponibilidad oral en humanos (aproximadamente un 10%) cuando se administraen forma de comprimidos con recubrimiento gastrorresistente. A pesar de losnumerosos estudios realizados, en el momento de la realizaci¨®n de la presentememoria se desconoc¨ªan aspectos relevantes de su farmacocin¨¦tica, como son losmecanismos y rutas utilizados para su absorci¨®n intestinal.Por este motivo y con la finalidad de identificar posibles causas de su escasabiodisponibilidad oral, el principal objetivo de este proyecto ha sido el estudio delmecanismo de absorci¨®n intestinal del acamprosato en el tramo medio del intestinodelgado de rata, utilizando para ello una t¨¦cnica in vitro. Adem¨¢s, se ha estudiado si lainfluencia de otros factores como son el alcoholismo, el tipo de dieta o la existencia deciertos amino¨¢cidos pueden influir en su absorci¨®n.Los estudios realizados indican que la absorci¨®n del acamprosato en el tramomedio del intestino delgado de la rata se realiza mayoritariamente mediante difusi¨®npasiva en el amplio ¨¢mbito de concentraciones estudiadas. Por tanto, la absorci¨®n delf¨¢rmaco a nivel intestinal se podr¨ªa realizar, bien por difusi¨®n a trav¨¦s de la membranalip¨ªdica (v¨ªa transcelular) o bien a trav¨¦s de las uniones estrechas existentes entre losenterocitos (v¨ªa paracelular).Adem¨¢s, en nuestras condiciones de experimentaci¨®n, factores como elalcoholismo y el tipo de dieta utilizada (l¨ªquida frente a s¨®lida) no afectan desde elpunto de vista pr¨¢ctico a la absorci¨®n del f¨¢rmaco.Por ¨²ltimo, los estudios de inhibici¨®n de la velocidad de absorci¨®n realizadoscon determinados amino¨¢cidos inhibidores (glicina, prolina, GABA y taurina) indicanque los transportadores de imino¨¢cidos presentes en el intestino delgado de rata,podr¨ªan estar implicados en la absorci¨®n del f¨¢rmaco a nivel intestinal. Sin embargo,su participaci¨®n en el proceso global de absorci¨®n ser¨ªa cuantitativamente pocoimportante y predominante solo a bajas concentraciones del f¨¢rmaco (¡Ü100 ¦ÌM).
Acamprosate was approved in different countries of the European Union andrecently, the FDA has approved in the USA and is indicated for the maintenance ofabstinence from alcohol in patients with alcohol dependence who are abstinent attreatment initiation as a part of a comprehensive management program that includespsychosocial support. One of the main problems of this drug is its low bioavailability inhuman (around 10%) when it is administered as enteric coated tablet. At the moment ofthe preparation of this thesis, and despite the great amount of studies done, relevantaspects of its pharmacokinetics properties as the intestinal routes of absorption wereunknown.With the purpose of identified the reason of its poor oral bioavailability, the mainaim of this study was to caracterize the intestinal absorption mechanism ofacamprosato in the rat jejunum, using an in vitro technique. Other objectives was tostudy the influence of different factors, as alcoholism, diet or the present of somestructurally related compounds in the intestinal lumen, in the intestinal absorption ofacamprosato.Intestinal acamprosate absorption was found to occur mainly by passivediffusion in the rat mid-jejunum in the wide concentration of acamprosato used. Andthis diffusion of the drug could take place by the transcelular route (across the intestinalmembrane) or by the paracellular using the tight junction.Moreover, neither chronic ethanol intake nor the type of diet (liquid vs. solid)seems to alter the intestinal absorption of the drug, so in this type of experiment it ispossible to use animals fed a solid diet.The results of the inhibition studies with structurally related aminoacids (GABA,taurine, proline, and glycine) suggest that acamprosate in the rat jejunum, could betransported, in part, by a carrier system. However, its repercussion in the overallprocess would be not quantitative important.

L'aéroservoélasticité concerne les études des interactions entre les forces aérodynamiques, les systèmes de commande active et la structure flexible de l'avion modélisée par des éléments finis. Un des principaux aspects du domaine de l'aéroservoélasticité concerne la méthode de conversion par des moindres carrées (Least Squares LS) des forces aérodynamiques du domaine fréquentiel (en aéroélasticité) au domaine de Laplace (en aéroservoélasticité). Cette méthode est appliquée sur deux modèles d'avion: le F/A-18 SRA (System Research Aircraft) de la NASA Dryden Flight Research Center et le CL-604 de Bombardier Aéronautique.

L'etude porte sur le depot et la caracterisation physico-chimique et electrique de couches minces d'arseniure de gallium amorphes deposees par pulverisation cathodique r. F. Sur quatre types de substrats (verre ordinaire, feuilles de molybdene, silicium et verre revetu d'une couche d'oxyde d'indium dope a l'etain (i. T. O. )). Nous avons montre que pour favoriser le developpement de la phase amorphe il est necessaire de minimiser l'energie des particules qui bombardent la couche en utilisant une faible tension d'autopolarisation et un produit pression-distance eleve afin de thermaliser ces particules. La temperature maximale de substrat pour l'elaboration de la phase amorphe depend du bombardement, et suivant les conditions de depot elle ne doit pas depasser un certain seuil favorisant la mobilite des adatomes en surface. Dans ces conditions, nous avons prepare des couches de gaas amorphes a des temperatures de substrat aussi elevees que 600c. La correlation entre la temperature, la nature du substrat et la composition du materiau a permis de montrer qu'on peut obtenir un compose stchiometrique a 290c sur verre, 400c sur le molybdene et 500c sur i. T. O. Aux temperatures inferieures, le compose est riche en arsenic, et un exces de gallium est obtenu aux temperatures superieures. L'etude de l'influence de l'energie des particules incidentes sur les proprietes electriques du materiau montre que le bombardement augmente la conductivite electrique a temperature ambiante, son facteur preexponentiel et la densite d'etats au voisinage du niveau de fermi. La conductivite et le facteur preexponentiel passent par un minimum au voisinage de la stchiometrie, ce qui indique theoriquement un changement de type de conduction (n pour x<0,5 et p pour x>0,5; x etant la concentration de gallium) et une possibilite d'autodopage pour les valeurs de x comprises entre 0,49 et 0,51

Nous avons conçu, implémenté puis validé une nouvelle méthode d'approximation des forces aérodynamiques non stationnaires à l'aide des polynômes orthogonaux de Chebyshev. Cela représente une contribution originale dans l'analyse des interactions aéroservoélastiques. La première série de résultats obtenus par cette nouvelle méthode (erreurs d'approximation des forces aérodynamiques non stationnaires) est comparée avec les résultats des méthodes LS et de Padé. La deuxième série de résultats (vitesses et fréquences de battement obtenues avec cette nouvelle méthode) est comparée avec celles obtenues par les méthodes classiques LS et de Padé. Ces deux séries de résultats obtenus par notre méthode et par les deux méthodes classiques LS et de Padé sont validées sur trois types différents d'avions: l'ATM (Aircraft Test Model), le F/A-18 en collaboration avec les laboratoires de la NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, et enfin le Challenger CL-604 de Bombardier Aéronautique.

A presente investiga??o ? quantitativa, caracteriza-se como sendo um estudo experimental, em um delineamento de efic?cia. A popula??o alvo foi formada pelas pessoas com mais de 60 anos do munic?pio, totalizando 109 indiv?duos, que foram selecionados previamente atrav?s de exames m?dicos e avalia??o f?sica, cujos dados est?o contidos em prontu?rio pr?prio. Os crit?rios de inclus?o, al?m da faixa et?ria, dizem respeito a sujeitos da pesquisa que apresentam lombalgia cr?nica, em condi??es de realizar os itens previstos na metodologia da presente pesquisa. Os selecionados foram divididos aleatoriamente, atrav?s de inscri??o par/ ?mpar, em dois grupos. Grupo um: os que fizeram o trabalho fisioter?pico, acompanhado de exerc?cio f?sico, de forma simult?nea, grupo dois: os que fizeram apenas o trabalho fisioter?pico, constituindo dessa forma o grupo controle. Resultados Quanto ? an?lise descritiva das caracter?sticas dos grupos calculou-se m?dia de idade em 66,74?6,35 anos, sendo a maioria indiv?duos do sexo feminino, contabilizando 78,18% de idosas no grupo um e 77,77% de idosas no grupo dois. Ap?s an?lise estat?stica para compara??o das medidas encontradas em pr? e p?s-teste dos grupos exerc?cio f?sico e controle ?ndice de Massa Corporal os dois grupos apresentaram diferen?as estat?sticas tendo obtido uma diferen?a maior em rela??o ? m?dia de diminui??o de 0,98 kg/m? no grupo controle para 0,24 kg/m? no grupo um. Em rela??o ao percentual de gordura observamos uma maior igualdade neste protocolo apresentando valores de diferen?a de m?dias parecidos, obtendo uma diferen?a entre os grupos de apenas 0,4% de gordura o que n?o ? significativo. A circunfer?ncia de cintura foi o teste que mais apresentou diferen?as entre os grupos, no grupo um a m?dia ficou em 2,51cm j? o outro grupo controle 0,29cm. Na flexibilidade, os dados coletados n?o apresentaram uma distribui??o normal, sendo assim, utilizou-se o teste de compara??o de Wilcoxon, obtendo diferen?as estat?sticas significantes nos dois grupos. Sendo 2,31 cm no grupo um e de apenas 0,29 cm no grupo controle entre pr? e p?s teste, flexibilidade de ombro, n?o mostrou diferen?as significativas entre pr? e p?s testes nos dois grupos. Na for?a obteve-se as maiores diferen?as em rela??o aos grupos, ocorrendo uma diferen?a estat?stica significativa no grupo um de 3,27 kg e 0,24 Kg no grupo dois. A escala da dor, essa vari?vel apresentou diferen?as significativas nos dois grupos, ao se comparar as m?dias identificou-se que a diferen?a encontrada foi de 2,03 no grupo um e 0,23 no grupo dois em rela??o ? diminui??o da dor. Conclui-se que a a??o combinada de exerc?cio f?sico com a fisioterapia ocorreu uma melhora significativa nas val?ncias f?sica analisadas principalmente na diminui??o da dor e com isso tendo um tempo menor para a recupera??o da lombalgia no Grupo 1.

Kleine Moleküle wie Treibhausgase, aber auch Distickstoff und Disauerstoff stehen im Fokus der chemischen Forschung. Solche Moleküle sind durch ihr Vorkommen in der Atmosphäre ubiquitär vorhanden, preiswert und könnten als Synthesebausteine für die Darstellung von komplexeren Molekülen verwendet werden. In dieser Arbeit wurde die Reaktion koordinativ ungesättigter Diketiminato-Nickelkomplexe ([LNi] Komplexe) mit kleinen Molekülen untersucht. Zunächst wurden die Mechanismen der N2-Aktivierung durch reduzierte [LtBuNiI]- und [LMe6NiI] Komplexe miteinander verglichen. Dabei konnte das distickstoffaktivierende Schlüsselintermediat identifiziert und strukturell charakterisiert werden. Weiter wurden die N2-Komplexe [(LtBuNiI)( 1 1 N2)] bzw. K2[(LtBuNiI)( 1 1 N2)], die Vorläufer für [LNiI]- und [LNi0]– Komplexfragmente darstellen, hinsichtlich ihrer Potentials zur Aktivierung der reaktionsträgen Treibhausgase SF6 und NF3 untersucht. Über Reaktionen von Übergangsmetallkomplexen mit NF3 war bis dahin noch nicht berichtet worden; zur Umsetzung von SF6 existierten wenige Publikationen, in denen aber sehr viele mechanistische Fragen offengeblieben sind. Die Mechanismen der SF6- und NF3-Aktivierung wurden durch Kombination einer Vielzahl von ex- und in situ Analysen beleuchtet. Im Falle der SF6 Aktivierung gelang es zudem, ein Nickel(I)-Intermediat zu isolieren. Ein Produkt beider Systeme war der Fluorido-Nickel(II)-Komplex [LtBuNiIIF], dessen Reaktionsverhalten ebenfalls studiert wurde. Doch nicht nur Komplexe mit Nickelatomen in niedrigen Oxidationsstufen erwiesen sich für die Aktivierung kleiner Moleküle geeignet, sondern auch kationische [LtBuNiII(D)]+-Komplexe. Diese Nickel(II)-Komplexe reagierten mit fluorierten Molekülen, N2O sowie O2, was bemerkenswert ist, da Nickel(II)-Komplexe üblicherweise inert gegenüber O2 sind. Im Zuge der O2-Studien wurde ein metastabiler Oranoperoxidkomplex isoliert und strukturell charakterisiert, was beispiellos in der Literatur ist.
Current research focuses on the activation of small molecules like greenhouse gases, thermodynamically stable molecules like N2 and kinetically stabilized molecules like O2, which are all abundant in the atmosphere. Thus, it appears to be alluring to use them as cheap and readily available building blocks for the synthesis of value-added compounds. This dissertation deals with the reaction of low-coordinate diketiminate nickel complexes [LNi] and such small molecules. Initially, the mechanisms of the dinitrogen activation by reduced [LtBuNiI] and [LMe6NiI] complexes were studied. As a result, the key intermediate [(LtBuNiI)x(3 Br)xKx] (x > 1) was identified and structurally characterized. Subsequently, the nickel complexes [(LtBuNiI)( 1 1 N2)] and K2[(LtBuNiI)( 1 1 N2)], which represent sources for [LtBuNiI] and [LtBuNi0]– moieties, were applied to the activation of the inert, but very efficient greenhouse gases SF6 and NF3. Prior to these investigations, no transition metal complex had been reported to react with NF3. Publications dealing with the conversion of SF6 had been scarce, too, while at same time, the mechanisms involving its activation had been speculative. The mechanisms of the NF3 and SF6 activation reactions were deduced combining numerous ex-situ and in situ analytical methods. In case of the SF6 activation, even an intermediate could be isolated. In both systems, the nickel fluoride complex [LtBuNiIIF] was formed and its reaction behaviour was also studied. Furthermore, not only [LtBuNiI]- and [LtBuNi0]– moieties proved to be reactive towards small molecules, but also cationic [LtBuNiII(D)]+ complexes, which were specifically developed for this purpose. The reactions of [LtBuNiII(D)]+ complexes with fluorinated molecules (e. g. PhF, NF3), O2 and N2O were studied. In course of the O2 activation, a metastable organoperoxide complex was isolated and structurally characterized, which is unparalleled in the literature.

Abstract Around 1900 there was an intense controversy involving F. A. Gevaert, Amadee Gastoue, Peter Wagner, and others, concerning the role of Pope Gregory I (590-604) in the development of the repertory of chant that bears his name. Since 1950 the controversy has shifted to a somewhat different issue; but the persistent reality behind the Gregorian issue is that the time-if not the reign-of Pope Gregory represents a barrier. Since his time we can imagine the development of the repertory as it is preserved in sources after 750; before his time, that is, before 600, the development of Roman chant is hidden from us, for lack of data that can be fitted into a continuum. After 600, to be sure, we still have no agreed version of the development; we have enough information to imagine several possible developments, but not enough to decide among them.

A 48-year-old man was brought to the emergency department (ED) after being found in his bed unresponsive. The patient’s medical history was notable for remote alcohol abuse, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. He weighed 103 kg. In the ED, the patient was febrile at 101.1°F, BP 151/79 mmHg, HR 80 bpm, and O2 saturation 99%. Because of the altered mental status, he was intubated for airway protection. On arrival, the fingerstick glucose read “HI” (≥600 mg/dL). The patient had no history of diabetes and a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was 5.1% 1 year prior.

This chapter focuses on leprosy, an ancient disease that has been the cause of great morbidity and mortality for centuries. A 4,000-year-old skeleton with evidence of lepromatous leprosy was found in India, and DNA from the causative agent, Mycobacterium leprae, has been isolated from a Byzantine skeleton from Israel dated to 300–600 ad. More recent evidence has demonstrated cases of leprosy in England dating to approximately 400–500 ad. M. leprae is an unculturable, obligate intracellular, gram-positive, acid-fast bacillus. It multiplies very slowly in the host and grows best at 33°C to 91°F, which accounts for its predilection for cooler parts of the body such as the skin, testis, anterior segment of the eye, mucous membranes of nasal passages, ear lobes, and extremities.

This chapter describes the Battle of Keller’s Bridge at Cynthiana, Ky., the second of three engagements in the Second Battle of Cynthiana. While the initial battle was being fought in Cynthiana the morning of June 11, 1864, Union reinforcements arrived by train one mile northwest of Cynthiana at Keller’s Bridge on the Kentucky Central Railroad, which the Rebels burned a few days earlier. General Edward H. Hobson and Col. Joel F. Asper with 600 men of the 171st Ohio infantry, unaware of the ongoing battle in Cynthiana, unloaded the train for breakfast. Soon, Rebels stumbled upon the regiment and a battle took place along the Kentucky Central Railroad. Hobson was surrounded after a standoff lasting several hours, and surrendered. The chapter explores why Morgan decided to stay and fight Burbridge while outnumbered and low on ammunition.

<em>Abstract.</em>—Commercial harvest of Atlantic sturgeon <em>Acipenser oxyrinchus</em> from the Hudson River Estuary peaked in the late 1800s, declined precipitously soon after, and remained at low levels until the late 1970s when a resurgence in the fishery occurred. Preliminary analysis of the fishery suggested that the harvest was not sustainable. The state of New York banned possession of Atlantic sturgeon in 1996. A coastwide ban followed in 1998. We examined available data to determine whether the closures of the 1990s were warranted and to track stock recovery since the closure. We used an eggper-recruit model to determine an acceptable fishing rate (<EM>F</EM><sub>50%</sub>). We assumed a maximum age of 60 and a natural mortality rate <EM>M</EM> of 0.07 and obtained an <EM>F</EM><sub>50%</sub> of 0.03. The fishing rates <EM>F</EM> estimated during the recent fishery were 0.33 for males and 0.17 for females, well over the <EM>F</EM><sub>50%</sub>. We set an abundance target for spawning females at 3,000 animals, which was 50% of the estimated maximum abundance in the late 1800s. We estimated mean annual spawning stock size during the fishery as mean annual harvest divided by exploitation rate. Estimated numbers of mature fish were approximately 600 males and 270 females (less than 10% of the abundance threshold). Our estimates of fishing rate and female stock size suggest that the stock was severely overfished prior to and during the recent fishery. We used changes in relative abundance of juveniles to infer changes in recruitment. Relative estuarine abundance of premigrant juveniles declined in the late 1970s in the bycatch of the American shad <em>Alosa sapidissima </em>commercial gill-net fishery and in the mid-1980s in a 3-m bottom trawl survey. Both in-river indices suggest a slight improvement since the late 1990s. Relative abundance of postmigrant juveniles in a bottom trawl survey off the coast of northern New Jersey declined from the late 1980s through the present.

Electromagnetic radiation in the form of UV and visible light has long been used as a reactant in inorganic reactions. The energy of light in the 200- to 800-nm region varies between 143 and 36 kcal mol-1, so it is not surprising that chemical bonds can be affected when a system absorbs light in this readily accessible region. Systematic mechanistic studies in this area have benefited greatly from the development of lasers that provided intense monochromatic light sources and from improvements in actinometers to measure the light intensity. Prior to the laser era, it was necessary to use filters to limit the energy of the light used to a moderately narrow region or to just cut off light below a certain wavelength. Pulsed-laser systems also allow much faster monitoring of the early stages of the reaction and the detection of primary photolysis intermediates. The systems discussed in this chapter have been chosen because of their relationship to substitution reaction systems discussed previously. For a broader assessment of this area, various books and review articles should be consulted. Mechanistic photochemistry incorporates features of both electron-transfer and substitution reactions, but the field has some of its own terminology, which is summarized as follows: The quantum yield,F , is the number of defined events, in terms of reactant or product, that occur per photon absorbed by the system. An einstein, E, is defined as a mole of photons, and if n is the moles of reactant consumed or product formed, then F = n/E. For simple reactions F£ 1 but can be >1 for chain reactions. An actinometer is a device used to measure the number of einsteins emitted at a particular wavelength by a particular light source. Photon-counting devices are now available and secondary chemical actinometers have been developed, such as that based on the Reineckate ion, Cr(NH3)2(NCS)4-, as well as the traditional iron(III)-oxalate and uranyl-oxalate actinometers. An early problem in this field was the lack of an actinometer covering the 450- to 600-nm range and the Reineckate actinometer solved this problem.

A high-temperature molten salt pump, described as mechanical, free-surface, centrifugal, vertical-shaft, sump type, working at 500°C [932°F] to 600°C [1112°F], has been developed for the Thorium-Based Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR). Flow passage components of the pump are made of Hastelloy C-276 to ensure sufficient strength and corrosion resistance at high temperature. Also, a heat shield plug with air-cooled channels was designed to separate the drive motor, seal elements, and bearings from intense radioactivity and to keep the temperature of the flange seal below 150°C [302°F] and the temperature of the bearing below 80°C [176°F]. A dry gas seal was used so that there is zero leakage. Furthermore, some analysis of hydraulics characteristics, temperature field, thermal stress, and strain was performed to research the pump’s performance, and then the temperature field and the hydraulics were measured to validate the analysis results. The results show that the hydraulics, thermal stress, and strain meet the design value very well. The pump has been successfully operated on a LiF-NaF-KF test loop for over 250 hr. at temperatures of 500°C [932°F] to 600°C [1112°F], speeds of 1050 to 1450rpm, and flows of 15 m3/h [66 gpm] to 25 m3/h [110 gpm]. Abstract Present study investigates the roughness effect on laminar gas flow for microchannels ranging from 40 to 600 μm with various roughness heights (40–82 nm) by systematical experiments. The micro-channels are manufactured by micro-machining technology and KOH anisotropic etching is employed to achieve various roughness patterns. Experimental results shows that higher product levels of Reynolds number (Reh) and friction factor (f) are obtained for microchannels of larger size and smaller relative roughness and friction factor f approaches to laminar flow theory value f0 for very smooth channel but the ratio of (f/f0) decreases as the surface roughness increases.

Reactors of cyclic catalytic reformers require catalyst regeneration about every 7 days (∼50 cycles per year). To facilitate the in situ regeneration, large diameter motor operated valves (MOV) are used (typically Class 600 NPS 8 to NPS 16 API 600 gate block valves). Double block-n-bleed arrangements of the MOVs are used to assure isolation of the 350 psig 960°F process and regeneration media. The regeneration MOVs will be closed and in isolation for up to 4 days and can reach temperatures close to ambient depending on their distance from the process flow. Once the MOVs are swung open, the valve body quickly transitions from ambient temperature to 960°F over a matter of minutes. Such an extreme thermal shock has historically led to a number of cracks in the MOV valve bodies. With each unit having over 50 MOVs, it becomes expensive and time consuming to open every MOV at a scheduled turnaround, inspect, and repair any cracking noticed.

A start-up of a gas turbine means that stress and forces are put on the machine. A start-up in cold climate conditions means that the forces are more critical since the material in the machine becomes more brittle. At a certain temperature the material is utilized to its limits (with appropriate margins applied) and for the SGT-600 ambient temperatures below −30°C (−22°F) become critical. In earlier installations in an arctic climate, an electric pre-heater has been utilized to prevent the critical components from becoming too brittle. This additional hardware costs money, is consuming auxiliary power and may contribute to unavailability. Another way to solve this issue may be to install material that is less brittle, but this will also increase the cost of the installation. Siemens is now applying an improved control logic during start-up, solving this issue in the software, without any additional hardware and avoiding unnecessary material changes. This new innovative start-up procedure is performing an automatic check of the stress levels before loading the machine, resulting in a safe and reliable start at temperatures below −30°C (−22°F).

Abstract Creep deformation behavior, creep strength property and microstructural evolution during creep exposure were investigated on Super 304H steel for boiler tube. In the high stress and lower temperature regime, creep rupture strength of Super 304H steel is higher than that of SUS304H steel. The slope of stress vs. time to rupture curve of Super 304H steel, however, becomes steeper with increases in creep exposure time and temperature, and the creep rupture strength of Super 304H steel becomes closer to that of SUS304H steel after the tens of thousands of hours at 700°C (1292°F) and above. In the short-term, at 600°C (1112°F), creep rupture ductility increases with increase in creep rupture life. However, it tends to decrease after showing this maximum value and the creep rupture ductility decreases with increase in temperature. The complex shape of creep rate vs. time curves, with two minima in creep rate, was observed at 600°C (1112°F). Several type precipitates of niobium carbonitride (Nb(C,N)), Z phase (NbCrN), and copper were observed in Super 304H steel, as well as M23C6 carbide and sigma phase observed in SUS304H steel. The change in slope of stress vs. time to rupture curve is caused by disappearance of precipitation strengthening effect during creep exposure. Accuracy of creep rupture life evaluation was improved by stress range splitting method which takes into account the change in slope of stress vs. time to rupture curves was demonstrated.

Cold Reheat Piping has received little attention in power plants for many years. Carbon Steel piping that handles steam at 500 F to 600 F has only had problems when not properly supported or water hammered on start up. Most recorded failures have been mechanical fatigue at a girth weld. A number of catastrophic failures in Cold Reheat Piping have occurred in recent years. Most of these recent failures can be traced back to water hammer or a change in the operation of attemperator sprays. This paper shows how a Cold Reheat Piping system, that was included in a nondestructive test program, failed in a short period of time due to thermal fatigue, from a change in spray operation.

This study examines the degradation of an exhaust oxidation catalyst on a Cooper-Bessemer GMVH 12C2 gas engine. Critical parameters were determined, such as light-off temperature and reduction efficiency at 450 and 600?F. The catalyst surface was analyzed to examine the location and rate of poison deposition. Catalyst life was examined based on NESHAP guidelines. Catalyst life is strongly dependent on catalyst temperature and space velocity. For similar industrial applications, if the engine unit particulars are known, site operators can use the information in this study to predict when the oxidation catalyst will need to be either replaced or regenerated (washed).

In summer 2021, air temperatures in Canada broke records multiple days in a row as a powerful heatwave spread over the Pacific Northwest, registering over 600 heat-related deaths and setting an all-time high-temperature record for the country at 49.6°C (121.3°F). An insufficient preparedness for such high temperatures meant that emergency response capacity was overwhelmed while the general public was unequipped to deal with anomalous temperatures. As climate change continues to make heat events such as this one more frequent and intense, the lessons learned during this disaster are critical to prepare for the next. This technical background report for the 2021/2022 edition of the Interconnected Disaster Risks report analyses the root causes, drivers, impacts and potential solutions for the British Columbia heatwave through a forensic analysis of academic literature, media articles and expert interviews.

F-GC-02 Informe de Inteligencia Competitiva y de Mercado1 Introducción Este estudio permite desarrollar inteligencia de mercado, científica y tecnológica sobre el extracto de Cannabis sativa, específicamente del Cannabidiol, para mapear los avances científicos y tecnológicos que se han venido desarrollando en los últimos años, así como su aplicación y desarrollo de productos derivados. El CBD es un componente extraído de la planta de cáñamo, la cual se refiere específicamente a Cannabis sativa con un THC total inferior a 1% en peso seco en hojas y cogollos. La marihuana y el cáñamo pertenecen biológicamente al mismo género, su única distinción es su concentración de THC. Por su baja concentración de THC el cáñamo no es psicoactivo, a diferencia de la marihuana (Hilderbrand, 2018). El cáñamo es cultivado en aproximadamente 40 países, siendo Canadá, Corea, Francia y China los más grandes productores (ONU, 2022). En el caso de América Latina los países más avanzados en el cultivo son Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador, Chile y Colombia, esto debido a que fueron los primeros países en poseer acciones legislativas a favor de la producción y uso del cáñamo (LAIHA, s. f.). El cultivo de cáñamo se considera sostenible y versátil porque se aprovecha la totalidad de la planta, absorbe grandes cantidades de CO2 y se usa en productos alimenticios, biocombustibles, textiles y materiales de construcción. Este cultivo cumple con varios de los atributos demandados para las producciones agropecuarias actuales, se puede mencionar el aprovechamiento industrial de toda la planta y el alto potencial como cultivo orgánico. El mercado mundial del cáñamo, en su totalidad de industrias, podría alcanzar los 18 600 millones de dólares en 2027 (ONU, 2022)

Till (n=196) and stream sediment (n=60) samples were collected in the area south and west of Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories (NTS 85B, C, F, and G), over the course of 3 summer field seasons. Samples were processed to recover kimberlite and other indicator minerals. This report summarizes results of the kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) studies, including measures of KIM mineral types, abundances, and chemistry (major, trace, and rare earth elements). KIMs were present in 24% of the samples collected, and only 183 KIM grains in total were recovered, of which Cr-pyrope garnets were the most abundant (65.6%). Chemical analyses revealed strong similarities to the Drybones Bay and Mud Lake kimberlites which are situated 50 to &amp;gt;100 km to the northeast, roughly aligned with prominent glacially streamlined landform flowsets in this field area. Results suggest there is little evidence for undetected kimberlite outcrop or sub-crop in the study area.

A recent Office of Pipeline Safety survey found that corrosion caused 17 to 20 percent of pipeline failures. Of those corrosion failures, roughly half resulted from internal corrosion. In pipelines, internal corrosion is caused by produced (carry-over) or condensed water that contains dissolved gas and/or bacteria. In many cases, chemicals with inhibiting or biocidal properties are added to mitigate corrosion. The internal corrosion in many systems occurs under slowly flowing conditions at ambient temperatures (e.g., relatively low temperature of about 15.5�C (60�F)). The overall objectives of this project were to determine the influence of microbial consortia typically found in condensed water, produced water, and hydrocarbons on the internal corrosion of steel pipeline exposed to CO2, H2S, and O2. To accomplish these objectives, a multi-year project was planned. For the first year, the specific objectives were to assemble a chemostat system capable of maintaining a mixed biofilm consortium of bacteria implicated in MIC of steels under the pressures encountered in gathering lines, identify the type of microbial populations inside pipelines and conditions under which internal MIC has been observed, and perform a limited number of corrosion tests to evaluate the effects of these bacteria on corrosion.
