Resumen
AbstractThe design community has growing familiarity with the concept of affordances and with the utility of this concept in many areas of design. Less emphasis has been placed on natural processes by which people acquire knowledge about affordances. Consequently, little is known about how design might be optimized to enable users to detect the actions that are available in a given human–machine system. We review scientific research about what people do to obtain information about affordances. We discuss implications of this research for design.

Resumen
The Fatwa making process is a process used by an Islamic mufti (A Muslim legal expert) to issue a non-binding opinion or fatwa (judicial pronouncement in Islam) on the point of Islamic sharia law when a question is raised by a mustafti (The person who asks a mufti for a fatwa), the person who has asked for a fatwa. The mufti will issue the fatwa through four fatwa-making stages, which are al-taswir (problem description), al-takyif (adaptation), al-hukm (legal explanation) and al-ifta' (fatwa determination). This process is intended to ensure the fatwa issued is accurate and appropriate. The research design is defined as a logical action plan, and it functions as a planning framework that involves all processes holistically to achieve the objectives of the study. This study explored the appropriateness of the fatwa making process in research design, the purposes, steps, and resources of the research design based on the fatwa-making process and why it is not used to conduct Islamic-related researches. The two main objectives of the study was to identify the fatwa-making process, and to analyse the research design based on the fatwa-making process. In order to achieve these objectives, the qualitative study adopted document analysis and content analysis methods. The research found that the fatwa-making process possessed detailed steps that resembled research design and was more appropriate in conducting Islamic-related research based on the purposes, actions, and resources of research designs based on the fatwa-making process.

We examine the ways in which members of a small group coordinate their memories, bodies and language in a functional and goal-oriented manner when they are co-designing their dream house and then collaborative remembering that previous interactive encounter. Our analyses show the following: (1) participants structured collaborative design and collaborative remembering sessions in different ways (e.g. linear and sequential vs iterative and hierarchically structured, respectively); (2) higher degrees of knowledge building were temporally synchronized with higher degrees of interactivity during both tasks; (3) collaborative remembering did not only follow the spatial structure of successive elements of the dream-house design session, but it was also proceeded by associations between semantic elements of the discourse; and (4) participants collaboratively remember better what initially generated most joint activity during collaborative design. This research thus contributes to understanding of collaborative remembering processes with respect to a knowledge-rich collaborative task.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how the profiles of design thinkers influence particular design-thinking solutions. It proposes to identify who (profiles), how (design-thinking methodologies) and what (outcomes as an innovation roadmap: process, product, business model, channel, brand, etc.), since the ways professional designers tackle a problem to reach an innovative solution is related to the designers’ profile. Design/methodology/approach The paper opted for an exploratory study using a focus group, composed of eight design thinkers and experts. An online survey was also sent to 123 DT leaders, with a return rate of 41 surveys, who worked on an end-to-end innovation project. The data were complemented by documentary analyses. Findings The paper provides empirical insights into the importance of selecting a diverse DT team. The team composition must be diverse because different profiles are required for different types of innovation and also for each DT phase to create value. Research limitations/implications Given the exploratory research approach being used in the paper, the research results may lack generalization to different contexts. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further, using a larger sample that includes designers from different countries and testing eventual hypotheses. Practical implications The paper includes implications to increase the success rate of business innovations, and to reduce the associated costs that continue to increase for trial and error methods. Originality/value The paper fulfills an identified need to study how the DT profile and phases, empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test, require the correct skills and leadership throughout the whole process for effective outcome implementation.

Resumen
The article considers methodological approaches and practical use of the exploratory research for making a people-metric panel for the measurement of television ranking indicators. The main task of the exploratory research is to design a social-demographic portrait of the audience, to assess the contribution to the television viewing of different age groups, and to identify control parameters for the selection of permanent participants in such studies. In 2020, in the Republic of Belarus, the practice for establishing a single national television and radio ranking measuring company was tested. The MediaIzmeritel company entered the media advertising market as using international standards (GGTAM) and research technologies (Kantar, UK). To make a panel of studies’ participants equipped with technical devices for the passive measurement of television ranking (people meters), an exploratory research and a subsequent multivariate analysis of the data obtained are necessary. The article describes the innovative for Belarus practice of creating a single national media measurement company under the few works on exploratory research of the television audience. The author explains the design of such an exploratory study conducted in July-December 2020 with the face-to-face interview and CATI telephone survey; methodological aspects of making a television panel with a multivariate analysis of empirical data; theoretical approaches to the interpretation of the concept ‘audience’, and the design of the panel matrix - the empirical structure of the peoplemetric panel.

Resumen
PurposeEmployee engagement recently emerged as a promising mechanism to improve organisational effectiveness and accordingly reduce the performance gap. This paper empirically demonstrates which employee engagement dimension(s) act as the strongest dimension to enhance the levels of employee engagement and consequently organisational effectiveness.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a quantitative approach, specifically a survey design, using a questionnaire to collect data. Regression analysis was applied to predict the impact of the employee engagement dimensions on the level of employee engagement in organisations and the impact of online/social media, as part of communication, on employee engagement.FindingsThe statistical analyses indicate that the dimensions organisational strategy and implementation, organisational commitment and team commitment are significant predictors of employee engagement. On-line/social media has a negative effect on employee engagement. However, according to the results, communication in organisations can be improved, especially by using online/social media more effectively.Research limitations/implicationsThis includes low response rate from some groups.Practical implicationsThe importance of secondary general management tasks, particularly motivation and communication, in mobilising employees to cooperate in pursuing organisational goals, became apparent. This study reflects the adverse effect of a lack of leadership and management skills, and ineffective use of online/social media on organisational performance, as reported in academic and practitioner research. Regardless, practitioners can apply the levers of motivation, via structural dimensions of organisation, to activate psychological presence which drives employee engagement and in turn facilitates strategy implementation and consequently organisational effectiveness. Scholars can modify their research agendas by investigating the “(un)availability” of human resources to improve organisational effectiveness.Social implicationsThe costs of disengaged employees are high, in terms of productivity losses and the performance gap, with adverse consequences for society.Originality/valueEmployee engagement as a driver of strategy implementation is an overlooked area of research. This study offers a better explanation of employee engagement as a mechanism to improve strategy implementation, thus reducing the performance gap, and consequently waste. Employee engagement engenders employee support to pursue organisational goals, in a coordinated system of cooperation, and is produced by the structural dimensions of organisation, the parameters within which psychological presence is activated. Psychological presence drives employee engagement which enables employees to be available to implement strategy to achieve organisational goals and thus organisational effectiveness. Engagement at a broader level than individual is significant.

Resumen
A mixed methods research design, which is a complex approach, combines both quantitative and qualitative data in a single study or succession of studies. This design can be particularly functional for exploring complex research questions that cannot be fully answered by using a single research design. Moreover, a mixed methods design is necessary to examine the relationships between different variables because examining the relationships between diverse variables is not viable just through a single research design. This design is required to complement and cater to the increasingly multifarious requirements of contemporary researchers. This article, which explores and discusses types, purposes, strengths, challenges and criticisms of the mixed methods research design as its objectives, stems from an analysis of some notable works in the field. It is grounded on the secondary qualitative data accumulated in the forms of words from journal articles and books related to the research designs. It assists the novices in the field of research in particular and other researchers in general by providing them with an overview of mixed methods design along with its types, such as convergent parallel, explanatory sequential, exploratory sequential, embedded, transformative and multi-phage designs.

Resumen
Grounded theory was first introduced more than 50 years ago, but researchers are often still uncertain about how to implement it. This is not surprising, considering that even the two pioneers of this qualitative design, Glaser and Strauss, have different views about its approach, and these are just two of multiple variations found in the literature. While studies using grounded theory in management research are becoming more popular, these are often mixed with the case study approach, or they provide contradictory guidelines on how to use it. The aim of this paper is to provide a clear guide for researchers who wish to use grounded theory in exploratory studies in management research. To support this goal, the methodology’s different terms and variations, as found in the literature, are also discussed. This study can support researchers using this methodology, but it is also useful for reviewers and examiners who wish to understand more about it and the different ways in which researchers have implemented it.

Prior research suggests that psychotherapeutic techniques which differ in their contents are quite similar in their outcomes. Outcome data are reported from a study designed to maximise sensitivity to technique effects on outcome in a clinically realistic setting, and to permit detailed analysis of the relations between content, immediate impact, and outcome of therapy. Forty professional and managerial workers with depression or anxiety received eight sessions of Prescriptive (cognitive/behavioural) and eight sessions of Exploratory (relationship-oriented) therapy in a crossover design, with each client seeing the same therapist throughout. Outcome was assessed by standard interview and questionnaire methods. The results favoured Prescriptive therapy, although this difference was of moderate extent. The outcome was largely unaffected by the order in which the two methods were offered.

Resumen
The present research uses toy packaging as an exploratory case study to test the research design. The case study is so selected since it involves merchandizes in conflict between the needs of children and the trust of guardians. It also engages the role of playing as a learning process promoting children’s imaginary and creativity thinking. Visual stimuli along with self-report questionnaires are used to test the perceptual response of both children and guardians on the aspects of attractiveness, safety, value and taste. The study found a number of contradictions on preferences between children and parents which demands design rethinking. Keywords: children’ visual perception, package design © 2017. The Authors. Resumen
The single-case adapted alternating treatments design allows for an experimental comparison between two independent variables applied across two equally difficult, yet functionally independent, dependent variables. The design has been used prominently within the special education and behavior analysis literature since its inception. Despite its history and continued use, there are currently no formalized quality standards specific to the adapted alternating treatments design. Given the rise of evidence-based practices and the increased number of organizations developing quality and rigor standards, a discussion and evaluation of quality indicators specific to adapted alternating treatments designs is warranted. We provide an overview of quality indicators and examine their prevalence over the years within a subset of studies commonly incorporating the adapted alternating treatments design. Implications for researchers who use the design and organizations that develop standards for single-case research are discussed. Abstract :Universities across the world have now started focusing on creating and nurturing academic researchers. While the importance and benefits of a strong research mindset have been understood, the process of identifying and developing researchers lacks a sense of structure. The current study attempts at filling this gap by proposing and testing the Academic Research Aptitude Scale. The scale was created and tested using the DeVellis (2016) method. The initial pool of items consisted of 29 items that were generated in the course of a brainstorming session. The discussion with experts and literature review resulted in a 22-item instrument which was then reduced to 21 items, post the item analysis. The analysis was carried out on a sample of 303 research scholars and researchers. The exploratory factor analysis helped in the identification of the dimensions and the same was then checked using confirmatory factor analysis. The scale fulfilled the validity requirements and showed high reliability, as shown by Cronbach's alpha score. The final scale consists of 21 items. Resumen
Purpose Despite the volume of work on the subject, product design and its conceptualization has remained relatively abstract. There is hardly any discussion about the holistic meaning of design, especially with regards to its meaning for a user. This paper aims to explore consumer design perception to provide it a multidimensional definition and measure that is more relevant to industrial designers. Design/methodology/approach The study was done in two qualitative phases: the first to generate and confirm the design dimensions pre-conceived from literature, corroborated with consumer voices; and the second to include gamified depth interviews triangulated with conventional depth interviews and word association-based correspondence analysis to generate items that can measure each of those dimensions. Findings The first study confirms five dimensions of consumer design perception: visual, functional, kinesthetic, interface and information. Following the second phase, the study proposes five items for visual design, seven for functional design, three for kinesthetic design, four for interface design and five for information design. Research limitations/implications Though through multiple qualitative studies, combined with literary evidence, this work provides reasonable qualitative validity to the findings, a semiotic analysis-based methodologies that can further concretize, if not refute, the findings. Rooted in the theory of design value, the study explores transformation of design values, from the designer’s domain to that of a consumer. While each of the design constructs has gone through a thorough investigation in literature, this work is the first to provide a unified theory of consumer design perception. Practical implications Designers have long struggled to know what consumers want. There is a clear divide in designers and consumers’ meanings of design. This study attempts to bridge this divide. Items measuring each construct should enable them in tweaking their offerings to a consumer’s liking. Originality/value Design is an abstract term and can be applied by a designer or a consumer. Dimensionalization of this complex term for better understanding using innovative qualitative tools serves as an original contribution to field of design research.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that individuals consider necessary to be happy in their job. Based on these factors, a measure of job design happiness (JDH) is proposed. Design/methodology/approach Two methods were applied: a qualitative study with content analyses (n=969) to develop an exploratory questionnaire; and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis by applying structural equations models. In this second study the questionnaire was sent to a second sample (n=1,079). Findings Five first-order factors were identified: self-fulfillment; group working, attaining goals; leadership; and sustainability and job/family balance. These factors are explained by a second order factor: JDH. Research limitations/implications Further research is needed to determine how the identified “job design happiness” components may interact with one another. Testing the measure of different industries and national cultures is also suggested. Practical implications Managers and human resources practitioners can improve job and organizational performance by applying the scale in several moments in time measuring the job happiness “pulse,” monitoring their decisions. Social implications The adoption of this measure for decision making in organizational and job design can contribute to the improvement of living standards and firm sustainability. Originality/value Research on organizational happiness has been increasing but instruments to measure JDH, considering organizational factors, are limited.

Resumen
The idea that theory and research on learning and cognition could influence the way we teach and structure learning environments has established a new paradigm for software designers [1]. According to a social-constructivist perspective, discourse, authentic tasks, exploratory and student-centered learning are integral to learning and understanding. The purpose of this article is to describe design considerations that were made for a software prototype called the Virtual Library—considerations that were framed by cognitive research and learning theory. When completed, the software will assist preservice teachers in learning about educational psychology and instructional design. The software resembles a library where students browse through a series of 3-D, virtual buildings to understand research, theory, and classroom applications of educational psychology and instructional design. Students have access to movies, text, images, and World Wide Web sites. They also have opportunities to participate in interactive lessons and e-mail conversations with other students, classroom teachers, educational psychologists, and instructional designers.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore, in literature and practice, the use of ex post impact evaluations within the public–private partnership (PPP) context and understand the major considerations for developing a PPP ex post impact evaluation method. Design/methodology/approach This paper applies exploratory research through expert interviews from Chile and Australia to describe: the relevance of this kind of evaluation, and the challenges of designing and conducting a PPP ex post evaluation. Findings The study confirms the lack of a formal method for evaluating the impact of a PPP project. Experts agree on the relevance of performing ex post evaluations to PPP projects and that in practice there is no formal procedure to follow. Among other challenges, experts discussed four general ex post evaluation aims: transparency and accountability, PPP legitimization, industry learning and government agency learning. Research limitations/implications This study confirms the gap in knowledge and contributes to the developments of approaches to perform ex post impact evaluation of PPP projects. It also provides several suggestions that need to be addressed when attempting to evaluate PPPs beyond the financial and contractual parameters. Originality/value The topic is not fully addressed in the literature, and this study contributes to the initial discussion and development of this evaluation method, which is considered significant for the development of public infrastructure.

Resumen
The design quality of the nuclear power plants (NPPs) has a direct impact on the operation and maintenance, which involves the safety and reliability of NPPs. Planning and development of the maintenance requirements of system and equipment in initial design stage of NPPs, and determination of reliability maintenance strategy compilation methods enable to fulfill good connection between design and operation of important value. After investigation and analysis, with a combination of reliability analysis method, experience feedback and common analysis approach, the methodology of reliability maintenance strategy compilation in design stage of NPPs has been initially established. And such methodology not only meets the maintenance requirements of system and equipment in design stage, but also enables to check the rationality and operability of process design from the maintenance implementation level, at the same time, it has great value in application regarding improving operational reliability of NPPs and avoiding non-essential major modification during operation of NPPs.

Resumen
Purpose – Whilst there has been considerable research on the use of electronic communications technologies to transfer design files for Additive Manufacturing (AM) between designer and manufacturer, corresponding studies that explore the resulting implications are limited. Often it is assumed that such an electronic approach is optimal; this paper serves to explore this assumption by reviewing the technical solutions, and identifying the practical implications. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The results of a systematic literature review are used to develop four e-commerce channel designs, which are then explored using primary and secondary case studies. Findings – It is shown that the use of e-commerce with AM has often been oversimplified, suggesting that it will bring about universal benefits through increased efficiency and cost reductions in information transfer, particularly as a result of supply chain disintermediation. Instead, this paper reinforces current e-commerce research suggesting that e-commerce channels can lead to both disintermediation but also re-intermediation of the supply chain; cost reductions and increased efficiency may not automatically follow. Practical implications – For AM suppliers, channel strategy is likely to be a critical consideration. This paper provides a framework of currently available approaches, links these to the original research, and explains the implications arising from each option. Originality/value – Whilst there are many technical studies in this area, the potential implications of their adoption are often hypothesized, but seldom explored empirically. This study makes an original contribution through the classification and analysis of the channels from a management perspective.

A student within a university’s Ed.D. program is encouraged by her director to narrow her research focus; however, her interests in Curriculum Studies, Arts-Based Educational Research, and Composition Studies led her to design a practitioner action research study examining intersections between the fields. As she collected participants’ data, she experienced poststructural disruptions within all stages of the dissertation process, from designing and collecting data to formatting and identity as a researcher. This narrative, exploratory article showcases how dissertations in practice can follow nonlinear pathways to knowledge when researchers are open to possibilities.

Resumen
Exploratory data analysis (EDA) is an iterative process where data scientists interact with data to extract information about their quality and shape as well as derive knowledge and new insights into the related domain of the dataset. However, data scientists are rarely experienced domain experts who have tangible knowledge about a domain. Integrating domain knowledge into the analytic process is a complex challenge that usually requires constant communication between data scientists and domain experts. For this reason, it is desirable to reuse the domain insights from exploratory analyses in similar use cases. With this objective in mind, we present a conceptual system design on how to extract domain expertise while performing EDA and utilize it to guide other data scientists in similar use cases. Our system design introduces two concepts, interaction storage and analysis context storage, to record user interaction and interesting data points during an exploratory analysis. For new use cases, it identifies historical interactions from similar use cases and facilitates the recorded data to construct candidate interaction sequences and predict their potential insight—i.e., the insight generated from performing the sequence. Based on these predictions, the system recommends the sequences with the highest predicted insight to data scientist. We implement a prototype to test the general feasibility of our system design and enable further research in this area. Within the prototype, we present an exemplary use case that demonstrates the usefulness of recommended interactions. Finally, we give a critical reflection of our first prototype and discuss research opportunities resulting from our system design.

Resumen
This work explores the concepts of work readiness and self-perceived employability, addressing contextually the perceptions from third-year bachelor students enrolled in the degree of Cultural Heritage and Tourism at the University of Macerata in academic year 2018-2019. The research aim was to identify perceptions of undergraduates in terms of skills and employability potential to design effective teaching interventions. Following literature review, the paper describes collected data and discusses around key research questions, related to (a) perception the world of work; (b) assessment of possessed skills; (c) estimation of employment possibilities; (d) perception of preparation to the labour market. Results show a gap between perceptions of the labour market and possessed skills, a medium-low self-perceived employability, and a low engagement in career development activities, where, to the other hand, perceived preparation provided by the university is declared as medium-high. Conclusions highlight the need of further work to better understand the implications of results for effective learning design.
