Resumen
A hybrid experimental-numerical approach, which combines microindentation experiments (where we measure the diagonal of the residual imprint after unloading) and numerical simulations by means of the finite-element method has been developed. The investigated materials in the present work are electrochemically deposited on brass substrates chromium and copper films with known thickness and unknown mechanical properties. Mechanical properties of the brass (CuZn36) substrate are known. Vickers’ microindentation experiments were carried out on the films and as a result the experimental load-displacement curves were obtained. After that the process of microindentation was modelled numerically by means of the finite-element method. Numerically obtained load-displacement curves were compared with the experimental curves. The results show good coincidence between numerical and experimental curves. Additionally it was realized nanoindentation experiment of thin copper film and these two methods (nanoindentation experiment and hybrid experimental-numerical method which combines experiment of microindentation and numerical simulations) for determination of mechanival properties of thin copper films were compared. Results obtained by means of the afore-mentioned two methods almost coincide but the second method is cheaper and gives more information about material properties of the film than the first method. It is shown that the second method is preferable to determine the mechanical properties of thin metal films.

Resumen
This study aims to determining the strain gauge location points in the problems of stress concentration, and it includes both experimental and numerical results. Strain gauges were proposed to be positioned to corresponding locations on beam and blocks to related node of elements of finite element models. Linear and nonlinear cases were studied. Cantilever beam problem was selected as the linear case to approve the approach and conforming contact problem was selected as the nonlinear case. An identical mesh structure was prepared for the finite element and the experimental models. The finite element analysis was carried out with ANSYS. It was shown that the results of the experimental and the numerical studies were in good agreement.

Resumen
Purpose The combined numerical-experimental approach has been presented. The purpose of this paper is to determine the critical rupture load of the notched components based on the cohesive zone modeling (CZM). Design/methodology/approach The 42CrMo4 steel (in normalized state) state has been tested and modeled using an eXtended finite element method (xFEM) philosophy with the CZM approach. In order to validate the numerically obtained critical load forces the experimental verification was performed. Findings The critical loads were determined for various notch configurations. The numerical and experimental values were compared. Based on this, a good agreement between experimental and numerical data is achieved. The relative error does not exceed 7 percent. Practical implications The presented procedure and approach is effective and simple for engineering applications. It is worth to underline that the obtained critical load values for notched components require only the static tensile test results and implementation of the presented route in numerical FEM, xFEM environment. Originality/value The presented methodology is actual and still developed. The scientific and engineering value of the presented numerical procedure is high.

Morocco faces tremendous climate constraints; the climate is hot and dry in most parts of the country, and when selecting an energy-saving approach, the architectural landscape becomes essential.Designer and building professionals seem to have neglected this large-scale integration. Sustainable development programs in terms of sustainable architecture are ongoing in countries around the world. One part of this trend is the growing concern shown in the high environmental efficiency of vernacular architecture. It is within this prescriptive framework that this research study is being conducted, which reveals novel architectural style integrating thermal comfort, energy efficient characteristics, passive solar elements architecture, and construction techniques inspired from the vernacular Ksourian architectural configurations. The goal of the present research study is to identify features of energy efficient vernacular architecture and thermal performances that affect indoor thermal comfort conditions for adaptation to current lifestyles in modern architecture. The key characteristics developed are; built mass structure, building orientation, space planning, availability of s, building techniques, and new coating materials for manufacturing and roofing. The suggested methodology enables to analyze the thermal performance analysis, applying an experimental research using experimental testing measurement and comparative optimization processes for thermal efficiency and comfort evaluation of a traditional vernacular earthen house.Series of experimental thermophysical characterization measurements have been carried out in order to quantify on a real scale the thermophysical properties that characterize the Rissani earth. Thusthermophysical characterization results are operated as input data for the thermal dynamic simulation for the purpose to evaluate thermal performances and comfort under the weather conditions and control natural comfort in both summer and winter, without using heating or cooling systems. Ultimately, the simulations carried out make it possible to identify the optimal orientation, revealing an effective decrease in interior temperatures during summer and providing good thermal comfort in winter.

Resumen
The paper presents a new approach to designing tracking control of uncertain nonlinear plants. The approach is entirely based on numerical methods and corresponding recurrence relations. It results in recursive control laws that resolve plant nonlinearities and compensate all disturbances and parameter variations. Also, it enables a free shaping of the control error dynamics. Control algorithms based on the method of successive substitutions and the Newton’s method are studied in detail. Detailed description of an application and experimental evaluation is included.

Resumen
Due to the high cost of experiments commonly performed to verify the resistance of glass elements to impact loads, numerical models are used as an alternative to physical testing. In these, accurate material parameters are crucial for a realistic prediction of the behaviour of glass panels subjected to impact loads. This applies in particular to the glass’s strength, which is strictly dependent on the strain rate. The article reports the results of an extensive experimental campaign, in which 185 simply supported toughened glass samples were subjected to hard-body impacts. The study covers a wide range of glass thicknesses (from 5 to 15 mm), and it aims to determine a critical drop height causing fracture of the glass. Moreover, a 3D numerical model of the experimental set-up was developed to reproduce the experiments numerically and retrospectively to determine the peak stress in glass that developed during the impact. Based on the results of numerical simulations, a load duration factor of 1.40 for toughened glass for impact loads is proposed. In addition, the paper includes a case study to demonstrate the use of the modelling methodology and results of the work on a practical example of an internal glass partition wall.

Resumen
The spray behaviour and droplet trajectories in realistic conditions are of crucial importance in many industrial, agricultural and chemical applications. Droplet characteristics and spray trajectory in chemical applications (e. g. flue gas scrubbing, CO2 capture in spray column) determine the amount of mass involved in the gas scrubbing process, mass trapped by the flow or attached to the walls. Knowledge of the droplet behaviour can improve a nozzle design and scaling, increase the process efficiency, minimize the process liquid and blow away the fraction. In this study, experiments with pressure swirl nozzle in cross–flow of air were performed at one nozzle injection pressure (0.5 MPa) and several cross–flow velocities (8, 16, 32 m/s). The results on droplet trajectories are compared with numerical results obtained by ANSYS Fluent. Two Lagrange approaches for spray modelling were used. Injection of droplet groups and Linearized Instability Sheet Atomization (LISA) model incorporated within ANSYS Fluent were used to represent the spray. The CFD results of spray penetration and droplet trajectories are compared with experimental data. A simple analytical model is able to well predict trajectories of large droplets, but fails to predict trajectories of small droplets. The LISA model yields a better accuracy for spray in cross-flow prediction.

This paper describes the design verification process of a new bus roof. The aim was to obtain a roof with comparable or better mechanical properties and likely dropped weight. The sandwich roof is developed in the framework of the project when properties matching real roof were compared to test samples. Different core materials and faces have been investigated. The experimental results serve to verify the suitability of the proposed FEM modelling for the future use on global structure roof numerical model.

Resumen
The mechano-chemical effects of elasticity and plasticity are introduced into a peridynamic (PD) corrosion model. A PD equation that couples the mechanics and kinetics of electrochemistry is proposed for the first time. This clarifies the influence of mechanical load in governing the occurrence of diffusion during corrosion. The phase changes experienced by a material are used to characterize the movement of the corrosion boundary, and the concentration of material points is used to characterize the degree and extent of damage caused to the chosen metal. Immersion tests and in-situ electrochemical tests are carried out, and the results are used to explore the effects of stress and/or load on the kinetics of environment-induced damage to an aluminum alloy. The model predictions are in good agreement with the experimental observations. The results of this study demonstrate that a coupled mechano-electrochemical PD corrosion model can capture corrosion-induced damage and be used to study damage propagation upon exposure to an aggressive environment.

Resumen
In the study, the photovoltaic thermal system using nanofluid as coolant is validated using numerical approach by comparing the experimental results and simulation results. Due to high cost and difficulty in preparing nanofluid, it is more practical to perform the study using numerical approach which is convenient and saves plenty of time. The photovoltaic thermal system is investigated numerically through Computational Fluid Dynamics Approach using Ansys 19.0 Fluent Software. The numerical study is based on different solar irradiation at different hours. The coolant that is selected in the study is aluminum oxide () water nanofluid. The validation study between the experimental results and simulation results are achieved by examining the photovoltaic (PV) surface temperature and nanofluid outlet temperature. The maximum percentage of error between experimental and simulation results of PV surface temperature and nanofluid outlet temperature are 12.66% and 7.89%. Also, the mean average percentage error (MAPE) are computed for PV surface temperature and nanofluid outlet temperature. The results for PV surface temperature and nanofluid outlet temperature are 10.31% and 6.67%. Since the MAPE results are within 10% or error, it proved that there is good accuracy between the simulation and experimental results.

Resumen
In the present work, the flexural strength of delaminated composite plate has been analysed numerically and compared with experimental results. For the numerical investigation, a general mathematical model of the laminated composite plate with and without delamination has been developed using two higher-order kinematic models. The desired governing equation is obtained using variational approach and discretised with the help of the isoparametric finite element steps. The flexural responses of the delaminated structure computed numerically through a generic in-house computer code developed in MATLAB environment. The consistency of the developed numerical models is checked and validated by comparing the bending responses with the available published results. Now, the experimental bending responses of both intact and delaminated composites are evaluated using three-point bend test and compared with numerical responses of the presently developed higher-order models. Finally, the effect of different materials and geometrical parameters including the size, location and position of the delamination on the bending behaviour of the laminated composite plate have been analysed numerically and discussed in detail.

This paper describes a combined numerical and experimental approach to the development of a software package for simulating the thermoforming process. In this process thin polymer sheets are forced under pressure into a mold cavity. During the forming process the polymer is subjected to large deformations, which result in severe nonuniform thinning. The development of the simulation software was facilitated by a close interaction between numerical modeling and experiment. On the one hand, experimental results guided the development of the software, and on the other hand, numerical developments have been used to suggest new experiments to be performed and critical quantities to be measured. The numerical software is based on the finite element method and the hot polymer is modeled as a nonlinear elastic membrane. Because of the very large deformations occurring in this process, a rigorous large deformation theory has been employed. The numerical formulation also contains contact capabilities for contact between the polymer and the mold and for contact between different parts of the polymer itself. Since very little was known about the physical processes before the program was started, especially about the material behavior and temperatures involved, carefully planned experiments were carried out to guide the selection of the material models used in the software. Since there also was a widespread misconception about the nature of some of the process parameters involved, numerical calculations were used to suggest measurements to be performed on some of these critical parameters. Excellent correlation between calculations and experiment have been obtained and are presented in the paper.

To predict the behavior of a dual plate composed of 5052-aluminum and 1002-cold rolled steel under ballistic impact, numerical and experimental approaches are attempted. For the accurate numerical simulation of the impact phenomena, the appropriate selection of the key parameter values based on numerical or experimental tests are critical. This study is focused on not only the optimization technique using the numerical simulation but also numerical and experimental procedures to obtain the required parameter values in the simulation. The Johnson-Cook model is used to simulate the mechanical behaviors, and the simplified experimental and the numerical approaches are performed to obtain the material properties of the model. The element erosion scheme for the robust simulation of the ballistic impact problem is applied by adjusting the element erosion criteria of each material based on numerical and experimental results. The adequate mesh size and the aspect ratio are chosen based on parametric studies. Plastic energy is suggested as a response representing the strength of the plate for the optimization under dynamic loading. Optimized thickness of the dual plate is obtained to resist the ballistic impact without penetration as well as to minimize the total weight.

Bangladesh which lies in an earthquake-prone region, possesses many seismically vulnerable structures and would need to be strengthened for future usage following the current building code. In this context, assessing the responses of the existing building frames with or without infilled masonry is essential for designing an adequate strengthening scheme that would be suitable for the building. The current study intends to model and simulate one of the available masonry infilled test specimens where the fiber modeling approach of RC member and the multi-strut model of infill masonry have been considered. In addition, the numerically obtained lateral strength has also been compared with analytically evaluated lateral strength. The lateral responses obtained from the numerical analysis showed a fair agreement with the experimental cyclic behavior having a ratio of experimental to the numerical lateral capacity of 0.97. The numerical lateral strength also indicates good conformity with analytical evaluation having an analytical to numerical lateral capacity ratio of 1.13. Torque flow pumps are widely used for pumping of fluids with high content of solid and fibrous inclusions and gas bubbles, in particular, for pumping of sewage and wastes. Fluid flow in these pumps is featured with strong vortex patterns, making it difficult to predict reliably their performance curves numerically. The paper is devoted to selection of a numerical approach for simulation of fluid flow in a torque flow pump of “Turo” type and its influence on simulation results. In particular, influence of geometrical configuration of the rotor-stator interface as well as numerical grid fineness is demonstrated. For one geometric configuration, the fluid flow is simulated with different turbulent models, with a steady state as well as transient approach. The simulations were performed using the software product ANSYS CFX. The simulation results are compared with the experimental measurements in the torque flow pump of “Turo” type. The experimental research included probing of fluid flow in three cross-sections of the stator domain, visualizing of streamlines along the rotating and stationary walls, as well as obtaining of performance curves. A good agreement between the numerical and experimental results is obtained as the rotor-stator interface is located at some distance off the rotating parts. Influence of choice of the turbulence model on the simulation results is demonstrated. Conclusions and recommendations are made concerning the choice of initial and boundary conditions, geometrical configuration of the rotor-stator interface, and parameters of turbulence models that affect both the flow pattern in the pump and its performance curves as well as the numerical solution time and required computational resources.

In the rapid new automobile development, the use of simulation technology is highly demanded due to shorter time to market and fashionable product styling that go beyond the rule-of-thumb in the manufacturing technology. In stamping simulation, the expected predictions rest with the part formability, spring back, blank optimization, and other vehicle integration works. These predictions are conducted concurrently during detailed product design, and intensive product validation is performed based on such predictions. In current work, it has established the experimental mechanical properties and flow curve data for thin galvanized sheet metal. Furthermore, the true prediction of part formability is investigated with established data and standard material database embedded in commercial simulation software. The tensile experiments were carried out on a uniaxial hydraulic tensile test machine with sheet metal specimen and in accordance to ASTM requirements. Three different sheet metal specimens were prepared from the longitudinal, transverse and 450degrees from the rolling direction. From experimental works and formulation, the mechanical properties, anisotropy and flow curve had been obtained. Further improvement in the embedded material database increases the prediction accuracy of FEM analysis for Body-in-White structure and crash performance.

Resumen
This article deals with the identification of elastic parameters (engineering constants) in sandwich honeycomb orthotropic rectangular plates. A non-destructive method is introduced to identify the elastic parameters through the experimental measurements of natural frequencies of a plate undergoing free vibrations. Four elastic constant are identified. The estimation of the elastic parameter problem is solved by minimizing the differences between the measured and the calculated natural frequencies. The numerical method to calculate the natural frequencies involves the formulation of Rayleigh-Ritz using a series of characteristic orthogonal polynomials to properly model the free edge boundary conditions. The analysis of the results indicates the efficiency of the method.
